Sugar intake is a potentially important aspect of diet which has not previously been validated in the Adventist Health Study-2 (AHS-2). We sought to validate the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) measurement of total sugars, added sugars, sucrose, and fructose against multiple 24-h dietary recalls (recalls) in AHS-2 participants. Food consumption data from a self-administered FFQ and six recalls from 904 participants were combined with nutrient profile data to estimate daily sugar intake. Validity was evaluated among all participants and by race. FFQ and recall means were compared and correlation coefficients (Spearman’s, energy-adjusted log-transformed Pearson’s, deattenuated Pearson’s) were calculated. Mean total energy, total sugars, and fructose intake were higher in the FFQ, whereas added sugars and sucrose were higher in recalls. The energy-adjusted (log-transformed) deattenuated correlations among all participants were: total sugars (r = 0.42, 95% CI 0.32–0.52), added sugars (r = 0.50, 95% CI 0.36–0.59), sucrose (r = 0.32, 95% CI 0.23–0.42), and fructose (r = 0.50, 95% CI 0.40–0.59). We observed moderate validity for added sugars and fructose and low-moderate validity for total sugars and sucrose measured by the AHS-2 FFQ in this population. Dietary sugar estimates from this FFQ may be useful in assessing possible associations of sugars intake with health outcomes.

Accurate data are essential for investigating relationships between maternal time-use patterns and nutritional outcomes. The 24 h recall (24HR) has traditionally been used to collect time-use data, however, automated wearable cameras (AWCs) with an image-assisted recall (IAR) may reduce recall bias. This study aimed to evaluate their concurrent criterion validity for assessing women’s time use in rural Eastern Ugandan. Women’s (n = 211) time allocations estimated via the AWC-IAR and 24HR methods were compared with direct observation (criterion method) using the Bland–Altman limits of agreement (LOA) method of analysis and Cronbach’s coefficient alpha (time allocation) or Cohen’s κ (concurrent activities). Systematic bias varied from 1 min (domestic chores) to 226 min (caregiving) for 24HR and 1 min (own production) to 109 min (socializing) for AWC-IAR. The LOAs were within 2 h for employment, own production, and self-care for 24HR and AWC-IAR but exceeded 11 h (24HR) and 9 h (AWC-IAR) for caregiving and socializing. The LOAs were within four concurrent activities for 24HR (−1.1 to 3.7) and AWC-IAR (−3.2 to 3.2). Cronbach’s alpha for time allocation ranged from 0.1728 (socializing) to 0.8056 (own production) for 24HR and 0.2270 (socializing) to 0.7938 (own production) for AWC-IAR. For assessing women’s time allocations at the population level, the 24HR and AWC-IAR methods are accurate and reliable for employment, own production, and domestic chores but poor for caregiving and socializing. The results of this study suggest the need to revisit previously published research investigating the associations between women’s time allocations and nutrition outcomes.

Accurate and timely data are essential for identifying populations at risk for undernutrition due to poor-quality diets, for implementing appropriate interventions and for evaluating change. Life-logging wearable cameras (LLWC) have been used to prospectively capture food/beverage consumed by adults in high-income countries. This study aimed to evaluate the concurrent criterion validity, for assessing maternal and child dietary diversity scores (DDS), of a LLWC-based image-assisted recall (IAR) and 24-h recall (24HR). Direct observation was the criterion method. Food/beverage consumption of rural Eastern Ugandan mothers and their 12–23-month-old child (n 211) was assessed, for the same day for each method, and the IAR and 24HR DDS were compared with the weighed food record DDS using the Bland–Altman limits of agreement (LOA) method of analysis and Cohen’s κ. The relative bias was low for the 24HR (–0·1801 for mothers; –0·1358 for children) and the IAR (0·1227 for mothers; 0·1104 for children), but the LOA were wide (–1·6615 to 1·3012 and –1·6883 to 1·4167 for mothers and children via 24HR, respectively; –2·1322 to 1·8868 and –1·7130 to 1·4921 for mothers and children via IAR, respectively). Cohen’s κ, for DDS via 24HR and IAR, was 0·68 and 0·59, respectively, for mothers, and 0·60 and 0·59, respectively, for children. Both the 24HR and IAR provide an accurate estimate of median dietary diversity, for mothers and their young child, but non-differential measurement error would attenuate associations between DDS and outcomes, thereby under-estimating the true associations between DDS – where estimated via 24HR or IAR – and outcomes measured.

The objective of this study was to assess the agreement between the Brazilian Healthy Eating Index – Revised (BHEI-R), estimated by a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and multiple 24-hour recalls (24h-R). The Wilcoxon paired test, partial correlations (PC), intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and Bland-Altman method were used. The total BHEI-R scores and its components (“total fruits”, “whole fruits”, “total vegetables”, “integral cereals”, “saturated fat”, “sodium”, and “energy intake derived from solid fat, added sugar, and alcoholic beverages”) were statistically different, with the ICC and PC indicating poor concordance and correlation. The mean concordance estimated for the total BHEI-R and its components varied from 68% for “integral cereals” to 147% for “whole fruits”. The suitable concordance limits were violated for most of the components of the BHEI-R. Poor concordance was observed between the BHEI-R estimated by the FFQ and by multiple 24h-R, which indicated a strong reliability of the BHEI-R on the instrument used to collect information on food consumption. Resumo O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a concordância entre o Índice de Qualidade da Dieta Revisado (IQD-R), estimado por questionário de frequência alimentar (QFA) e recordatório de 24 horas (R24h). O teste de Wilcoxon, correlações parciais (CP), coeficiente de correlação intra-classe (CCI) e o método Bland-Altman foram usados. Os escores totais do IQD-R e seus componentes (“frutas totais”, “frutas inteiras”, “vegetais totais”, “cerais integrais”, “gordura saturada”, “sódio” e “ingestão de energia derivada de gordura sólida, adicionados de açúcar e bebidas alcoólicas” foram estatisticamente diferentes, com o CCI e as CP indicando baixa concordância e correlação. A concordância média estimada para o IQD-R total e seus componentes variou de 68% para “cereais integrais” e 147% para as “frutas inteiras”. Os limites adequados de concordância foram ultrapassados para a maior parte dos componentes do IQD-R. Observou-se baixa concordância entre o IQD-R estimado pelo QFA e por múltiplos R24h, o que indica uma forte confiabilidade do IQD-R no instrumento usado para coletar informações sobre o consumo alimentar. Se utilizó la prueba de Wilcoxon, correlaciones parciales (CP), coeficiente de correlación intraclase (CCI) y el método de Bland-Altman. Las puntuaciones totales del ICD-R y sus componentes (“total de frutas”, “frutas enteras”, “vegetales totales”, “granos integrales”, “grasa saturada”, “sodio” y “consumo de energía derivada de grasa sólida, agregado de azúcar y alcohol”) fueron estadísticamente diferentes, con el CCI y el CP indicando baja concordancia y correlación. La concordancia media estimada para el ICD-R total y sus componentes varió de 68% para los “granos integrales” y 147% para las “frutas enteras”. Los límites adecuados de concordancia fureon excedidos para la mayor parte de los componentes del ICD-R. Se observó baja concordancia entre el ICD-R estimado por el CFA y múltiples R24h, lo que indica una fuerte confiabilidad del ICD-R en el instrumento que se utiliza para recopilar información sobre el consumo de alimentos.

A standardised, national, 160-item FFQ, the FFQ-NL 1.0, was recently developed for Dutch epidemiological studies. The objective was to validate the FFQ-NL 1.0 against multiple 24-h recalls (24hR) and recovery and concentration biomarkers. The FFQ-NL 1.0 was filled out by 383 participants (25–69 years) from the Nutrition Questionnaires plus study. For each participant, one to two urinary and blood samples and one to five (mean 2·7) telephone-based 24hR were available. Group-level bias, correlation coefficients, attenuation factors, de-attenuated correlation coefficients and ranking agreement were assessed. Compared with the 24hR, the FFQ-NL 1.0 estimated the intake of energy and macronutrients well. However, it underestimated intakes of SFA andtrans-fatty acids and alcohol and overestimated intakes of most vitamins by >5 %. The median correlation coefficient was 0·39 for energy and macronutrients, 0·30 for micronutrients and 0·30 for food groups. The FFQ underestimated protein intake by an average of 16 % and K by 5 %, relative to their urinary recovery biomarkers. Attenuation factors were 0·44 and 0·46 for protein and K, respectively. Correlation coefficients were 0·43–0·47 between (fatty) fish intake and plasma EPA and DHA and 0·24–0·43 between fruit and vegetable intakes and plasma carotenoids. In conclusion, the overall validity of the newly developed FFQ-NL 1.0 was acceptable to good. The FFQ-NL 1.0 is well suited for future use within Dutch cohort studies among adults.

Improved methods for quantitative self-reports of total physical activity in epidemiological studies are needed. We evaluated randomly selected individuals' ability to integrate their perception of physical activity over time to produce an estimate of the "usual" level, using a novel instrument for self-quantification of energy expenditure. A population-based sample of 418 Swedish men and women, age 20-59, completed a questionnaire containing the new instrument. For validation, three 24 hour recalls by phone served as gold standard. Reproducibility was assessed through administering the instrument another three times. The validation involved 133 subjects and another 160 completed the reproducibility evaluation. Pearson correlation between usual daily energy expenditure measured by the instrument and the mean of the 24 hour recalls was 0.73. After subdividing the self-reported daily energy expenditure and the mean of the 24 hour recalls into quintiles, 83.5% of the participants remained in the same quintile, or one quintile apart. There was a tendency towards overestimation of usual daily physical activity. This was significantly associated with low education. Reproducibility showed an intraclass correlation of 0.55. Although integrated reports of usual daily energy expenditure over longer periods seem to be afflicted with a tendency of overestimation, total energy expenditure can be estimated with reasonable validity and reproducibility using our instrument.

The aim of this study was to validate the intake of carotenoids, fruits and vegetables estimated by the Food Frequency Questionnaire for Adolescents (FFQA) using the method of triads. Blood samples were collected from 80 elementary school adolescents to assess serum levels of β-carotene. Partial correlation coefficients (r) were calculated between an estimated intake of carotenoids, fruits and vegetables and the serum levels of β-carotene. Validity coefficients were calculated using the method of triads. With the exception of carotenoids, partial r from the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) were greater than those of the 24-hour recall (24hR). The fruit/vegetable group showed the highest partial r for the FFQ (r = 0.235) and the 24hR (r = 0.137). The highest validity coefficient was obtained for the vegetable group, as assessed by the FFQ (r = 0.873). On average, the validity coefficient values for the FFQ were greater than those obtained for the 24hR or the β-carotene serum levels. The FFQA is an accurate tool for estimating the intake of carotenoids, fruits and vegetables in this population group. O objetivo do estudo foi validar a ingestão de carotenóides, frutas e hortaliças estimada pelo Questionário de Frequência Alimentar para Adolescentes (QFAA) utilizando o método das tríades. Foram coletadas amostras sanguíneas de 80 adolescentes de uma escola de Ensino Fundamental para análise do b-caroteno plasmático. Coeficientes de correlação (r) parciais foram obtidos entre a ingestão de carotenóides, frutas e hortaliças e o b-caroteno plasmático. Os coeficientes de validade foram estimados a partir do método das tríades. O QFA apresentou valores de r parcial superiores ao recordatório alimentar de 24 horas (R24h), exceto para carotenóides. O grupo das frutas/hortaliças apresentou os maiores valores de r parciais tanto para o questionário de frequência alimentar (QFA) (r = 0,235) quanto para R24h (r = 0,137). O maior coeficiente de validade foi o do grupo de hortaliças avaliado pelo QFA (r = 0,873). Os valores de coeficiente de validade observados para o QFA foram em média superiores aos obtidos para R24h e b-caroteno plasmático. O QFAA é um instrumento com boa acurácia para estimar o consumo de carotenóides, frutas e hortaliças nesse grupo populacional.

Objective: To assess the agreement between three recall periods for self-reported drug use using a 24-hour recall period as reference. Methods: Participants were allocated into three groups with different recall periods of 7, 14 and 30 days and were interviewed at two different times. A 24-hour recall questionnaire was answered during the first interview, and a questionnaire on drug use over the different recall periods tested was answered during the second interview. The agreement between the questionnaires was evaluated using percent agreement and kappa. Results: For continuous drugs, percent agreement varied between 92 and 99% and kappa varied between 0.71 and 0.97 for three periods tested. For drugs of occasional use, percent agreement varied between 63 and 81% and kappa varied between 0.27 and 0.52. The prevalence of drugs, particularly those of occasional use, increases with time. Conclusions: The high level of agreement between the three recall periods suggests that all of them are valid for the investigation of drugs of continuous use. RESUMO: Objetivo: Avaliar a concordância entre três períodos recordatórios para o auto-relato do uso de medicamentos, utilizando o período recordatório de 24 horas como referência. Métodos: Os participantes foram alocados em três grupos de acordo com os períodos recordatórios de 7, 14 e 30 dias e entrevistados em dois momentos. Um recordatório de 24 horas foi respondido na primeira entrevista e, um questionário sobre o uso de medicamentos com os diferentes períodos recordatórios avaliados foi respondido na segunda entrevista. A concordância entre os questionários foi avaliada pelo percentual de concordância e kappa. Resultados: O percentual de concordância variou entre 92 a 99% e o kappa de 0,71 a 0,97 para os medicamentos de uso contínuo nos três períodos recordatórios. Para os medicamentos de uso eventual, o percentual de concordância variou entre 63 a 81% e o kappa oscilou entre 0,27 a 0,52. A prevalência do uso de medicamentos, particularmente para os de uso eventual, aumentou com o tempo. Conclusão: A análise de concordância sugere que os três períodos recordatórios avaliados são válidos para a investigação da utilização de medicamentos de uso contínuo.

Objective Patient reporting of symptoms in a questionnaire with a 7-day recall period was expected to differ from symptom reporting in a 7-day symptom diary on the basis of cognitive theory of memory processes and several studies of symptoms and health behaviors. Methods A total of 101 adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) completed a daily diary of items measuring symptoms and impacts of COPD for 7 days, and on the seventh day they completed a questionnaire of the same items with a 7-day recall period. The analysis examined concordance of 7-day recall with summary descriptors of the daily responses, examined the magnitude and covariates (patient characteristics and response patterns) of the difference between 7-day recall and mean of daily responses, and compared the discriminant ability and ability to detect change of 7-day recall and mean of daily responses. Results A 7-day recall was moderately concordant with the mean and maximum of daily responses and was 0.34 to 0.50 SDs higher than the mean of daily responses. Only the weekly report itself was a covariate of the difference. The discriminant ability and ability to detect change were equivalent. Conclusions In measuring the weeklong experience of COPD symptoms and impacts on groups of patients, the 7-day recall scores were higher than the daily diary scores, but equivalent in detecting change over time.
