Background: This study aimed to explore independent associations between serum uric acid and hypoglycaemia, and whether mildly increased serum uric acid exacerbated the association between mild decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and hypoglycaemia., Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 6713 inpatients with type 2 diabetes and eGFR ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m 2 and admitted to 81 tertiary care hospitals in China was conducted. Self-reported asymptotic hypoglycaemia with plasma glucose ≤3.9 mmol/L, hypoglycaemia episodes with symptoms in 1 month or hypoglycaemia that needed assistance from other people in 3 months before hospitalization was used to define hypoglycaemia. Binary logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios of serum uric acid for hypoglycaemia. Three measures, that is, relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), attributable proportion due to interaction and synergy index (S) were used to estimate the effect of mildly decreased eGFR on the association of serum uric acid with hypoglycaemia., Results: Serum uric acid was associated with hypoglycaemia in an ordinal manner (P for trend <0.01) with an odds ratio of top quartile versus the lowest quartile up to 3.03 (95% confidence interval: 2.13-4.32). The odds ratio of serum uric acid levels ≥ versus <283 µmol/L (i.e. the median) was 1.98 (95% confidence interval:1.58-2.48). Serum uric acid levels ≥ versus <283 µmol/L greatly enhanced the association between mild decline in eGFR (eGFR < 90 mL/min/1.73 m 2 ) and hypoglycaemia from 0.94 (0.36-2.43) to 3.90 (2.55-5.95), with a significant additive interaction (P < 0.05 for RERI, AP and S)., Conclusions: Mildly increased serum uric acid was associated with increased risk of hypoglycaemia and enhanced the association between mildly decreased eGFR and hypoglycaemia in type 2 diabetes. Background: To explore the association between serum uric acid (SUA) levels, metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients treated with lipid-lowering agents from multiple centers in China., Method: We investigated 15,478 participants who had been documented with recorded SUA in the DYSlipidemia International Study which included 25,697 patients, aged 45 years old or older, who were treated with lipid-lowering agents from 122 centers between April 2012 and October 2012. Logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the association between SUA levels, MetS and CVD., Result: After adjusting for multi-variables, hyperuricemia (the highest category of SUA level) showed a significantly higher risk of MetS compared to the lowest category[according to NCEP-ATPIII criteria, odds ratio (OR) 1.51, 95 % confidence interval (CI) (1.30,1.74) in men, OR 2.35 95 % CI (2.00,2.75) in women; and according to IDF criteria, OR 1.40 95 % CI (1.20,1.63) in men, OR 1.65 95 % CI (1.41,1.94) in women]. In addition, elevated SUA concentration was shown to be associated with coronary heart disease (CHD) (OR 1.26 95 % CI (1.09, 1.45) in men, and OR 1.27, 95 % CI (1.07, 1.50) in women) and heart failure (HF) (OR 1.61 95 % CI (1.15, 2.24) in men, and OR 1.91, 95 % CI (1.29, 2.82) in women)., Conclusion: Our research suggested a positive association between SUA levels and MetS in Chinese patients receiving lipid-lowering therapy. Elevated SU levels were positively associated independently of measured confounders to CHD and HF.

Objective: To explore the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its component and thyroid volume in Chinese adolescents, and to compare the detection rate of MetS under the three different diagnostic criteria. Methods: A total of 1097 school students (610 males and 487 females, ages 12–15 years) were enrolled. All the participants underwent physical examination, biochemical test, and thyroid gland ultrasonography. The thyroid volume of normal, overweight and obese group was compared. We also analyzed the association between the number of MetS components and thyroid volume. Linear and multiple linear regression were applied to explore the association between metabolic parameters and thyroid volume. Results: The thyroid volume of the males in overweight (t = 3.784, P < 0.001) and obese group (t = 5.068, P < 0.001) was significantly larger than that in normal group; the thyroid volume of the females in overweight group (t = 4.627,P < 0.001) was significantly larger than that of normal group. As the number of MetS components increased, the thyroid volume also increased significantly (F = 10.64, P < 0.01). Height, weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, hip circumference, systolic blood pressure, fasting insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), uric acid and triglyceride were all positively associated with thyroid volume in the adolescents (P all < 0.001). Meanwhile, there was a negative association between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and thyroid volume (P < 0.001). According to multiple linear regression, waist circumference (β = 0.029, 95 %CI: 0.015 ~ 0.042; P < 0.01) and waist height ratio (β = 3.317, 95 %CI: 1.661 ~ 4.973; P < 0.01) were predict factors of thyroid volume. No statistical difference was found in the detection rates of metabolic syndrome under the three diagnostic criteria. Conclusions: Overweight, obesity and metabolic syndrome was associated with adolescent thyroid volume. Central obesity may be an independent risk factor for thyroid enlargement in adolescents. Introduction: Our previous cross-sectional study revealed the association between neck circumference (NC) and hyperuricemia. This study aimed to further investigate the longitudinal association between NC and hyperuricemia and to compare the strengths of longitudinal association of NC and waist circumference (WC) with hyperuricemia. Methods: A total of 4383 subjects without hyperuricemia at baseline were included. Multivariable linear regression was used to assess the association between baseline anthropometric indices and uric acid level at follow-up. Cox regression was used to assess the relationship between baseline anthropometric indices and the risk of future hyperuricemia. A receiver-operating characteristic curve was used to compare the predictive ability of baseline anthropometric indices for future hyperuricemia. Results: Among women, only baseline NC was positively, linearly associated with uric acid level at follow-up (β = 1.75) and risk of future hyperuricemia (ptrend < 0.05); risk of hyperuricemia in the third and fourth quartile groups of baseline NC significantly increased, compared with the first quartile group of baseline NC (HR = 1.48 and 1.81, respectively). Among men, neither NC nor WC was associated with hyperuricemia after adjusting for confounder factors. The area under the curve of baseline NC and WC for hyperuricemia was comparable in both genders (0.606 for NC and 0.599 for WC in women, 0.578 for NC and 0.602 for WC in men). Conclusions: For women, only baseline NC is an independent risk factor of hyperuricemia within 3 years. NC and WC have a similar 3-year predictive ability for hyperuricemia in both genders. Key Points • This is the first study to assess the longitudinal association between neck circumference and hyperuricemia. • According to the results of this study, we propose for the first time that neck circumference is an independent risk factor for hyperuricemia in women in the future, rather than waist circumference. • We found for the first time that neck circumference and waist circumference have similar predictive ability for future hyperuricemia in both genders.
