The global phenomenon of urban flooding has become a pressing issue for cities worldwide. Conventional strategies to alleviate flooding, such as augmenting the capacity of drainage systems, are incompatible with the principle of sustainable development. In this regard, Low Impact Development (LID) techniques have emerged as a promising and sustainable approach to manage storm water. The objectives of the present study are to determine the enhancement in functional and structural resilience of an UDS after implementation of LIDs and Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis of implementation of LIDs. To showcase the role of LIDs in enhancing drainage system resilience, a case study was conducted in Gurugram, India, a city frequently impacted by flooding. The LID Performance Index is designed to measure the improvement in functional resilience and decrease in the number of vulnerable locations aims to quantify the enhancement in structural resilience. The LCC analysis is carried out to determine the Benefit–Cost Ratio (BCR) of implementing the LID. The study determined the optimal percentage of LIDs to incorporate into the urban drainage system through the creation of various scenarios that considered the impacts of urbanization, climate change, and the cost of implementing LIDs. Results indicated that a system incorporating 10% of LIDs (S1) with a Benefit–Cost ratio of 2.05 was the most suitable scenario for the case area. For the scenario S1 the functional resilience is enhanced by 21% and number of vulnerable locations decreases by 8.7%. The study also identifies the barriers to the implementation of LIDs in developing countries like India, categorizing them into planning, implementation, and maintenance stage barriers. Ultimately, the study provides a comprehensive understanding of nature-based solutions for the effective management of urban drainage infrastructure, offering valuable insights for urban planners, design engineers, and policy makers to protect cities from flood hazards. Green gentrification implicates urban greening as a driver of neighbourhood 'upgrading' and subsequent displacement. However, it is unclear whether the concept resonates with, or supports the work of, those responsible for much of the greening occurring in cities – urban green planners/practitioners. We interviewed 33 planners/practitioners in Canada to refine our understanding of the relationships between urban greening and gentrification. We found that greening is closely tied to development, with funding/space for greening often provided through development requirements/incentives. Thus, rather than greening causing gentrification (as described in current literature), here greening is often a requirement and direct outcome of new development – contributing to what we describe as a broader greening of the gentrification process that is facilitated by various political-economic factors. Many interviewees stated that their current work focuses on addressing existing inequities rather than strategizing to limit future gentrification. However, they had mixed opinions about whether knowledge of green gentrification as a concept can help them promote equitable urban greening due to their lack of power over where/how urban greening occurs, along with the finding that greening is not causing gentrification. The uneven power dynamics between urban green practitioners/planners, developers, and elected officials also influenced views on whether gentrification is an intended outcome of greening. We conclude that relying on new development to provide urban greening is antithetical to addressing existing green inequities and is likely to exacerbate inequities through associating greening with gentrification. Recent measures to improve housing affordability (i.e. the removal of developer greening requirements) will disrupt the current development-greening relationship but are unlikely to address the issue of inequitable greening. Increased and ongoing collaboration between those working in urban greening, housing, and planning is paramount and should focus on affordability and equity across urban systems – attending to the interplay between greening, housing, affordability, and sustainability. At the height of Zimbabwe’s multi-layered crisis, emerged several Pentecostal-Charismatic Churches (PCCs). Led by youthful charismatic ‘prophets’, these PCCs gained significant traction in many urban spaces, especially in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital, where they have sought to ‘Pentecostalise’ the cityscape. Public spaces in Harare have become saturated with Pentecostal aesthetics, which include, but are not limited to, church-branded stickers on vehicles, huge religious billboards at strategic spaces, impressive megachurch buildings, and spectacular public displays. This remarkable growth of PCCs saw them venturing into huge real estate projects that have dramatically reshaped the urban landscape. Through these projects, PCCs are creating ‘cities within cities.’ Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Harare, I examine how two PCCs have reconfigured urban landscapes through their projects, activities, and rituals. In addition to a focus on the quotidian dimension of urban life, I also focus on how these projects enable congregants and residents to reimagine the possibilities of a different kind of future and life in the city. Interestingly, the power of the ascendant PCCs is such that they are becoming de facto urban planners themselves and thus their vision for the urban future is creating new ways of relating to the present in the growing city. Urban regeneration is a sound, sustainable urban development strategy globally. In China, promoting urban regeneration has become the national sustainable urban strategy. Under the resource constraint, it is necessary to understand what benefits different types of urban regeneration projects can contribute to urban development. Much research has contributed to evaluating the benefits of urban regeneration on the project scale. The systematic investigation of their effects on surrounding economic vitality, especially the comparison between different types of projects, is relatively downplayed. This paper aims to evaluate and compare the effects of urban regeneration projects on surrounding economic vitality by calculating the change in housing prices. Chongqing is selected as the case city. Based on the housing transaction data from 2015 to 2021, a staggered difference-in-difference method is employed to capture the results. The finding shows that the overall effects are significantly negative, especially within a 400–800 m radius. Higher investment or better project location relates to stronger negative effects. Moreover, the differences in effects among the three types of urban regeneration projects are clearly revealed from diverse perspectives. Urban environments face escalating challenges due to uncontrolled urbanization, rapid population growth, and climate changes, prompting the exploration of sustainable solutions for enhancing urban green spaces (UGSs). For this reason, poplars (Populus L.), due to their rapid growth, wide range adaptability to environmental conditions and versatility of use, have emerged as very promising. This comprehensive review synthesizes current knowledge regarding poplar's application in urban landscapes, emphasizing its multifaceted contributions and benefits. However, challenges arise from the variable lifespans of different poplar cultivars, necessitating strategic management approaches. Selecting cultivars based on growth rates, root system characteristics, and adaptability to urban conditions is pivotal. Adaptive replanting strategies, incorporating species with varying lifespans, offer solutions to maintain continual greenery in urban landscapes. Collaborative efforts between researchers, urban planners, and policymakers are essential for devising comprehensive strategies that maximize benefits while addressing challenges associated with their variable lifespans. In conclusion, harnessing poplar's potential in urban greenery initiatives requires a balanced approach that capitalizes on their benefits while mitigating challenges. Urban planners are involved in designing future urban energy systems as a part of their path toward decarbonization or Net Zero targets before 2050. In this process, new energy and information flows between industrial and urban regions should be considered, as well as safety and security managerial aspects regarding the existing and new infrastructures. This research aims to help engineering professionals and public planners define new collaboration dynamics to make industrial energy systems safer, more secure, and interoperable, surpassing the existing knowledge. Firstly, several recent R&D aspects are analyzed, demonstrating the organizational gap and providing early integration or knowledge reuse opportunities from R&D projects. After that, the authors present a model called Industrial-Interoperable Safe and Secure Urban Energy Systems (i-ISSUES), a multi-disciplinary approach combining classic urban energy planning, information technology use, safety and security management, and systems engineering as the integrated disciplines. Precipitation induced by tropical cyclones (TCs) over cities is associated with both TC duration and urbanization; however, observational evidence of the impacts of TC duration and urbanization on precipitation in megalopolises is limited. In this study, the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) of eastern China is taken as a typical region because this region has been experiencing both rapid urbanization processes and frequent TC attacks. During 1979-2018, we find reduced translation speed and increased meandering of TCs over the YRD, resulting in increased TC duration and the proportion of TC stalling in this region. The correlation between TC duration and TC-induced precipitation amount is significant across the YRD region but is relatively weak in areas with faster urbanization expansion rates. Long-term increases in TC-induced precipitation are found in both rural and urban areas but are larger for urban areas. Urbanization plays an important role in enhancing TC-induced precipitation over urban areas of the YRD region. Areas with faster urbanization expansion rates and longer TC durations have larger TC-induced precipitation, suggesting that urban expansion and TC duration jointly amplify TC-induced precipitation. Our findings suggest that urban planners, in areas potentially affected by TCs, should consider adaptation measures to mitigate the impacts of urban rainstorms amplified by the combined effects of TCs and urbanization. In this work, we propose a GIS-based platform aimed at the analysis of heatwave scenarios risks produced in urbanised environments, applied to assess vulnerability and impact heatwave scenarios. Our framework implements a hierarchical model that represents a good trade-off between forecast accuracy and portability in different urban fabrics, apart from the spatial scale of the data, using topographic and remote sensing spatial data provided by institutional agencies. The framework has been applied to two study areas: the dense city of Naples (Italy) and the intermediately populated city of Avellino (Italy) in order to evaluate its accuracy performances and portability in different urban fabrics. This article explores the regional disparities in water supply coverage in Pakistan in the context of intraregional development patterns. We applied the Gini index, Esteban and Ray index, and Moran's I to measure regional development patterns in terms of inequality, polarization, and spatial concentration and build an integrated framework combining them with other widely accepted factors to understand regional differences in water coverage quantitatively. Our results show that improved water (tap and pump water) is more widely supplied in Pakistan with lower inequality but higher spatial concentration than tap water supply coverage, although the patterns differ by urban–rural divisions and provinces. Western regions with smaller populations tend to have higher tap water coverage, and eastern regions with large populations are more covered by improved water. The regression models show various mechanisms of improved water and tap water coverage. Both are related to local economic conditions but tap water coverage is more related to local environmental conditions, and improved water is more related to local demographic conditions. Strong and dense population centers decrease improved water coverage but promote tap water coverage. Urban planners and policymakers should address polycentric regional development to fulfill various development targets and improve regional equity of drinking water coverage in terms of accessibility, availability, and quality. Improving, strengthening, and fine tuning, as well as developing, revitalizing, conserving, and preserving, are all words commonly used in an urban and regional planner's vocabulary. More nebulous are the concepts of it, thyself, which are the other in planning thinking and professional interventions. Who, what, how, when, and where will it be carried out? If conscious and aware of one's actions, oneself ought to be able to answer these questions without deference to its outcomes. However, it is commonly recognized that we are unable, and at times unwilling, to understand others' reaction to a proposal, even when put forward according to established common norms and traditions and socio-economic, environmental, cultural, and legal orders. The purpose of this paper is to review various planning challenges derived from earlier lived and or researched experiences that have already occurred, others taking place here and now, as well as others in need of further conceptualization and study. The review methods build not only upon the now classical sustainability framework, but also upon the more recent and alternative Soft City approach centered on place, movement, and sociability. It is believed that the planning topics and methods analyzed in this review can help reach carbon neutrality goals, promote climate urbanism, accomplish higher utilization of renewable energy, and reduce automobility levels, all goals conducive to graceful bliss and authentic happiness. Urbanization is an unavoidable force resulting in the directional change of metropolitan growth around the world, altering their structure and having a profound impact on the socioeconomic and environmental fabric of territories. The spatial phenomenon of urbanization is characterized by the rapid growth of built-up areas and random land-use conversion, mostly in peri-urban areas of the cities. This paper reviews spatial evaluation methodologies used in different studies to establish an appropriate approach to peri-urban spatial knowledge. It also reviews peri-urban transformations and spatial configuration assessment methodology. It summarizes the results into three categories: (1) spatial understanding methods, (2) spatial assessment methods, and (3) ambiguities and biases in the application of the methods. The report explains how studies have considerable ambiguities from this standpoint: (1) context of results, and (2) replicability of methodology claims. This study also concludes that the efficiency of the outcome depends on the correct use of a territorial scale of the study, digital urban sciences, and localized indicators for attaining a sustainable urban form. In addition, measures that can enable spatial manifestation to achieve sustainable urban form have not been developed for transitioning peri-urban areas, and all solutions have employed urban-centric indices. Several frameworks, concepts and indicators have been developed in the past decades to help policy makers and water managers improve the sustainability of urban water systems, but overall progress has been slow. Water-related challenges have been increasing, with the number of cities suffering from lack of access to safe water and sanitation expected to soar, exacerbated by population increases and dwindling availability. While it is widely acknowledged that these challenges require systemic solutions to address them in a more integrated way, the concept, in current urban water literature, remains ambiguous. Here, we examine the potential of systems thinking in addressing urban water challenges and review the shortcomings of conventional paradigms and current management practices. System thinking allows for understanding of the web of interrelations that create these challenges and rethinking assumptions about how change happens. We highlight its potential to empower policymakers, water managers, urban planners and other stakeholders to address the root causes of urban water challenges, to shape and influence the broader enabling environment and conditions for the uptake of sustainable practices leading to the sustainability transformation of urban water systems. The timely implementation of climate adaptation measures for the urban environment is essential to the creation of robust cities. Within Norway, these adaptation measures are undertaken at the municipal level. Unfortunately, the implementation of adaptation measures has lagged behind expectations, partially due to public resistance to local projects. City planners seek tools to provide insight into the priorities of residents to build consensus and public support. This study follows up on two previous case studies of Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) implementation in Trondheim, Norway, where the prioritization of urban space is often a source of conflict. The Hofstede Cultural Compass is a tool that maps six cultural dimensions used in research and practice to inform users about cultural norms and cross-cultural divergences. This study seeks to test and verify this tool for use in building public consensus and support. Municipal managers responsible for project implementation took the Cultural Compass survey, and the results were collectively mapped and compared to the public at large. The Cultural Compass found notable divergences between the municipality and the Norwegian public within the areas of "Long-term Orientation", "Uncertainty Avoidance", and "Masculinity vs. Femininity". These findings were cross-referenced with thematically analyzed interviews of residents regarding their perceptions of a municipal SUDS project. Together, these case studies give greater insight into the issues of diverging priorities and perspectives experienced in the implementation of SUDS. Recommendations are presented to aid the understanding of intercultural divergences between planning offices and public priorities in an effort to better engage the public and build consensus. Rapid urbanization has produced many metropolitan areas in China, resulting in regional human-land-ecological environment contradiction phenomenon. In recent years, Chinese government has launched a series of new national ecological civilization construction and ecological protection projects. Monitoring the changes in land-use/land cove (LULC) and exploring its impact on net primary productivity (NPP) is a key hot issue to support sustainable development. This study took Wuhan metropolitan area as the research area to monitor the distribution and relationship between LULC and vegetation NPP changes is helpful to strengthen carbon balance and improve the quality of human settlements. The results showed that, from 2000 to 2020, land use types in the study area changed dramatically, mainly cultivated land, urban land, and other construction land. The vegetation NPP showed a continuous growth trend in time and space, with growth rate of 114.48%. With the passage of time, LULC spatial distribution had significant effects on NPP and chaotic urban sprawl has seriously affected NPP losses, while the ecological forest and grassland in remote areas can significantly increase NPP yield. This study also revealed the correlation between LULC and NPP, and opened up research approaches for land-use optimization and vegetation NPP based on different scenarios in the future. Our analysis not only contributes urban land-use planners, but also provides important insights into improving the competitiveness of green development among urban agglomeration systems. This paper explores the possible contribution of cinematic perceptions for spatial planning in general and the inclusion of everyday experience in the planning of the Flemish urbanized landscape in particular. Urban planners as well as policy makers struggle to get grip on dispersed spatial developments, while everyday practice of consuming space in sprawly areas, also in Flanders, unimpededly continues. Our assumption is that based on a theoretical understanding of the duality between urban theories and everyday life, a cinematic approach might gain insights in the inhabitants' imagination of suburbia in general and the Flemish landscape in particular. Here we will preliminarily refer to five contemporary fiction films, such as Nowhere Man (Patrice Toye, 2008), Fucking Suburbia (Jeff Otte, 2012), Kid (Fien Troch, 2012), Violet (Bas Devos, 2014) and Home (Fien Troch, 2016). They show how film represents, reflects and interacts with the intrinsic characteristics, the experience value and the typical dynamics of those sprawly areas. When various urban functions are integrated into one location, they form a mixture of functions. The emerging big data promote an alternative way to identify mixed functions. However, current methods are largely unable to extract deep features in these data, resulting in low accuracy. In this study, we focused on recognizing mixed urban functions from the perspective of human activities, which are essential indicators of functional areas in a city. We proposed a framework to comprehensively extract deep features of human activities in big data, including activity dynamics, mobility interactions, and activity semantics, through representation learning methods. Then, integrating these features, we employed fuzzy clustering to identify the mixture of urban functions. We conducted a case study using taxi flow and social media data in Beijing, China, in which five urban functions and their correlations with land use were recognized. The mixture degree of urban functions in each location was revealed, which had a negative correlation with taxi trip distance. The results confirmed the advantages of our method in understanding mixed urban functions by employing various representation learning methods to comprehensively depict human activities. This study aimed to investigate the plant diversity, plant traits, and environmental variables along the tropical urbanization gradient in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia. The study areas comprised 12 sampling plots sized 1 km2 that represented different urbanization intensities. Urbanization intensity was quantified as the percentage of the built-up area within a 1 km2 area. A total of 96 woody plant species belonging to 71 genera and 42 families were found in the study areas. In general, species diversity, richness, and evenness declined significantly as urbanization intensity increased. The number of native species reduced by 67.6% when urbanization intensity increased from wildland to suburban while the non-native species remained stable along the urbanization gradient. Regarding the plant traits, tree height decreased with increasing urbanization intensity, while no significant result was found for specific leaf areas. All environmental factors were significantly associated with urbanization where air temperature and light intensity showed a positive relationship with increasing urbanization intensity while the opposite trend was found for air humidity. This study emphasizes the importance of built-up areas as the predictor of native species in the tropics. The Western Himalaya are experiencing and epitomizing growing urbanization trends due to rapid population and tourism rise across the Indian Himalayan region. The pace and process of urban development in these regions are largely unplanned and unregulated; consequently, the altered landscape composition and configuration are influencing key ecological processes and functions supporting human wellbeing. Existing urbanization research addressing this issue has mainly focused on large urban centers, underrepresenting the potential role of medium-sized cities in sustainable landscape planning. Thus, this study attempted to quantify land use/land cover and landscape pattern dynamics in response to urban growth and expansion in and around two emerging urban centers—Dharamsala and Pithoragarh, Western Himalaya, over the past two decades. The study was split into three temporal periods, and intensity analysis was used to characterize transformational patterns in the city and outer zone of each landscape. The results indicate that, during the T2 and T3 period, the overall LULC dynamics was highest in Dharamsala and Pithoragarh, respectively. The urban development in Dharamsala occurred at the expense of cropland followed by vegetation and forest, while, in Pithoragarh, it occurred at the expense of cropland followed by vegetation loss dominated. Furthermore, the landscape pattern results highlighted the aggregation and homogenization at the city level, with a higher degree of disaggregation, fragmentation, and heterogeneity in outer zone. This paper highlights the importance of transformational patterns based on intensity analysis and landscape patterns to sustainable landscape development and planning. In addition, considering the past to present urban development trajectories, this study purposes a framework for sustainable landscape development in Himalaya for urban planners and policymakers. Neurological constructs are being applied in various fields; within urban studies and built environments, neurourbanism stands out. To understand this concept, this study seeks to conduct a scientometric analysis of the concept of neurourbanism. To do so, we gauged the intellectual structure and clarified the influencers and emerging themes while seeking to identify essential gaps in neurourbanism research in urban studies and the built environment. Data were sorted from Dimensions Artificial Intelligence platform because of its reliability in providing the needed dataset accurately, and the Citespace software was used to analyze the data. Our results suggest plurality in explaining the risk factors in urbanicity research, particularly regarding prevalence, incidence, and the general cause of psychosis in urban living. The study also shows that players in the construction sector, such as engineers, town planners, and developers, have not fully grasped how the built environment assists in improving well-being, reducing stress levels of urbanists, assisting migrants in settling into the community, and the general mental wellness of those who live in the city. The study also identified a correlation between urbanization and mental health and added that the main recipient of rapid urban transformation countries does not show leadership in neurourbanism studies. This study is to empirically investigate the impact of urbanization through improving transportation infrastructure, reflected by introducing high-speed rail (HSR), on the regional development with the interaction of the socioeconomic factors reflected by industrial structure. An advanced quantitative tool named multi-period difference-in-differences (DID) method is applied. We find the impact of urbanization through HSR on regional development is mixed while interacting with industrial structure helps to explain heterogeneities of the impact. The more the industrial structure tends to be agricultural, the greater the negative impact of HSR opening on regional economic development; meanwhile, the more the industrial structure evolves to be service-oriented, the greater the positive impact of HSR. This study highlights the importance of the interaction between urban growth and socioeconomic factors, which would provides a reference for government and urban planners to make decisions on introducing HSR or improving transportation infrastructure. Understanding changes in extreme hourly precipitation is critical to urban planners for building more sustainable and resilient cities. In this study, we use satellite nighttime light data, urban land area data, population, and economic data to objectively classify urban and rural stations. Based on the hourly precipitation data from national meteorological stations in 1974–2020 and from regional automatic weather stations in 2005–2020 in Shenyang (China), the spatio-temporal distribution characteristics of the thresholds, maximums, intensities, and frequencies of extreme hourly precipitation (ExHP) in urban and rural areas are analyzed and compared. The results show that the large-value centers of ExHP thresholds, maximums, and intensities are mainly concentrated in urban areas. Both the frequency and intensity of ExHP at urban stations are obviously larger than those at rural stations, and the peaks mainly appear at night for stations of both two types. From 1974 to 2020, the average frequency and intensity of ExHP at urban stations both show increasing trends, with the increasing rate being much higher than those at rural stations. In terms of temporal variation, precipitation events of the abrupt type are the most frequent, accounting for 48.6% of the total, followed by the growing type (42.7%) and continuous type (8.7%). ExHP events of the abrupt type are mostly concentrated in Kangping County and Faku County of Northern Shenyang, but rarely occur in Xinmin City. ExHP events of the growing type are mainly found in Xinmin City and the municipal district of Shenyang. For urban stations, the ExHP frequency decreases in the early stage of urbanization, while increasing evidently during the rapid urbanization stage. However, the situation is just the opposite for rural stations. This indicates that the rapid urbanization in Shenyang has a certain impact on the increase in ExHP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Planners have been seeking new urban solutions to increase the presence of citizens once again without any constraints to ensure a safe urban space and provide equal opportunities for using transportation modes. Multi-modal level of service, used as a tool for analyzing complete streets, facilitates the creation of a fair and equal environment for all users and the enhancements of public safety and security against road accidents. The main purpose of this study is to resolve the problems of urban space allocation of central streets to all users in cities of middle-income countries that lie in historical context. The analysis is based on the multi-modal level of service indicators and is influenced by efficient plans and global policy strengths. In this regard, identifying the characteristics affecting the road network system in the high-income country plans is inspiring for this research. In this paper by probing the case study and identifying the most important criteria affecting the comfort of street users, the proposed planning framework is presented in two stages: strategies and alternatives. The alternatives are presented at 3 levels based on the type of intervention, which is weighted by the AHP method. Then, the best and most practical alternative is selected based on the local criteria fitting the conditions of Sabzevar city with the TOPSIS technique. The results indicate that historical contexts, especially in the core of the cities, require conservative approaches; so, as much as possible, without physical destruction, the existing spaces need to distribute among all urban users in the most optimal way for ease of movement. Therefore, in Beyhaq Street, as a historical street in the center of Sabzevar city, by inspiring the methods of global traffic planning, a contextual format of devising has been presented to improve traffic problems. Migration industry has recently emerged as a lens through which to theorise the intertwinement of non-state actors who aim to provide diverse migration-pertaining services. However, while much of their work is done in and through cities, consequently (re)forming variegated urban landscapes, scholarly literature has thus far neglected the nexus between cities and the migration industry. In this special issue, we begin filling this gap by exploring the significance of migration industries - as a resurgent concept and an area of research from migration studies 一 for undec standing the urban. We start by reviewing the urbanisation of migration studies, highlighting its key limits. We then move on to introduce the migration industries debate, pointing out its existing implicit urban dimensions. We proceed by elaborating our main argument about why and how migration industries provide an especially productive lens for urbanists to consider. Specifically, we stress the three key analytical vantage points that the attention to migration industries enables us to see as central to contemporary city-making. These are its political-economic embeddedness, the urban-constitutive nature of trans-local connectivities, and how business-driven citymaking dovetails with more serendipitous, bottom-up shaping of the arrival city. Each of these points also describes how individual papers speak to them. This article examines how local governments calculate and allocate compensation to displaced peasants in demolition-relocation projects, known as chaiqian 拆迁 (demolition and relocation projects), at the urban edge of eastern Nanjing. Based on twenty months of ethnographic fieldwork, this article shows that, contrary to popular imaginings, chaiqian in Nanjing do not exclude peasants from urban development but seek to exploit the uneven urban and rural property regimes and bring rural spaces, including people, real estate, and crops, into the urban system. The government-developer growth coalition, motivated by real estate–driven urban expansion, engineers this process with the aid of calculative technologies and protocols of commensuration. Moreover, technocrats such as chaiqian cadres and urban planners can never fully translate rural real estate into monetary value. They have to constantly update and negotiate protocols of calculation with property-owning villagers to solve emerging issues of commensuration. The villagers, on the other hand, engage with these technologies of valuation to raise claims to a larger share of wealth in chaiqian compensation. Demolition and relocation projects thus are not merely the execution of a developmental ideal but assemble urban accumulation as an ongoing process of value translation and transformation. Due to extensive population growth, urbanization increases urban development and sprawl in the world's cities. Urban sprawl is a socioeconomic phenomenon that has not extensively incorporated socioeconomic factors in the prediction of most of the urban sprawl models. This study aimed to predict the urban sprawl pattern in 2030 by integrating socioeconomic and biophysical factors. NDBI, Cramer's V, logistic regression, and CA-Markov analyses were used to classify and predict built-up patterns. The built-up area is the dominant land use, which had a gradual growth from 1990 to 2020. A total of 20 socioeconomic and biophysical factors were identified as potentials in the municipality, affecting the urban sprawl. Policy regulation was the most attractive driver with a positive association, and land value had a high inverse association. Three prediction scenarios for urban sprawl were achieved for 2030. Higher sprawling growth is expected in scenario 3, compared with scenarios 1 and 2. Scenario 3 was simulated with biophysical and socioeconomic factors. This study aids in addressing urban sprawl at different spatial and temporal scales and helps urban planners and decision makers enhance the development strategies in the municipality. Despite the differences in cultural, economic, and political systems, China and Australia are societies sharing rapidly urbanizing futures. This presents significant challenges for urban planning, placemaking, and the sustainability of livable urban communities. Using Chongqing as a case study, metaPLACE is an experimental project investigating how participatory urban media (large and small interactive screens, installations, façades, and devices) can act as a co-designed interface between diverse communities, industries, and government stakeholders. The empirical data collected in this study is derived from a co-design workshop held in Chongqing in 2019 to explore how urban media can assist urban planners to design more livable urban places. The data indicates that there are a range of opportunities and concerns related to equitable placemaking, environment, the nature of interfaces and participation, ownership and management of data, large and small screens, and cultural and generational considerations. Our critical and comparative analysis of the research methods and cultural factors influencing the co-design process reveal deficiencies in widely accepted models of user experience design and design process used across industry and design research. Finding a parking space is a daunting task that frustrates drivers, affects the economic efficiency of carriers and impacts city sustainability. Between meeting the needs of deliverers (location, accessibility, proximity...) and individuals (price, duration, closeness...), transport and urban traffic planners find themselves in a conflict of interest. Hence the importance of a tool that manages the entire urban parking system in real time. This paper presents, in this perspective, a solution that allocates parking spaces to carriers and individuals under uncertain conditions. Its principle is founded on two allocation levels. The first distributes parking requests on the city areas by considering three characteristic indicators. The second ranks, for each driver, the available spaces in the designated area according to their decreasing non-dominated degree. It additionally includes a conflict management approach for dealing with the assignment of multiple drivers to the same place. Big data analytics in smart cities has given rise to the new interdisciplinary field of urban science, which uses data mining, visual analytics, modeling, and simulation to create novel planning support systems. One such system is RAISE (the Rapid Analytics Interactive Scenario Explorer) which assists urban planners and local government authorities with rapid analysis and visualization of land value uplift from proposed transport infrastructure. This paper's contribution is twofold. We first introduce co-design as a method for developing a planning support tool such as RAISE and present findings from a series of co-design workshops that informed its development. Findings included the need for further transparency of the land valuation process and recommendation of a community feature that explains valuation outcomes to landowners. The resulting insights from the co-design process led to a series of emerging questions that the design of this type of planning support system raises: (a) the collaboration with local government partners and the need for what Huybrechts calls "institutioning;" (b) some of the ethical implications of use, and (c) the impact of moving from conventional to AI/machine learning-assisted modeling. We discuss these questions as part of our second contribution. The paper concludes by reflecting on the process of using the development of RAISE not just as a solution but as an opportunity to problematize new questions and identify future research opportunities that tackle these questions. Cities, as complex systems, are increasingly vulnerable to a range of natural hazards and public safety risks, exacerbated by the rapid pace of global urbanization. Understanding these complex urban systems and developing sustainable development plans is crucial for policymakers, necessitating a precise evaluation of urban resilience. This study presents an innovative, data-driven approach to analyze urban resilience, integrating the Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM), Modified K-shell (MKS) decomposition algorithm, and Bayesian Networks (BNs). Focusing on the Chengdu-Chongqing urban agglomeration, we utilize spatio-temporal analysis to uncover resilience evolution and patterns. The findings indicate: (1) The distribution of city resilience in the Chengdu-Chongqing urban agglomeration exhibits a remarkable two-headed structure; (2) a diminishing resilience variance among urban agglomerations over time, suggesting an α-convergence trend; (3) a negative correlation in spatial correlation analysis for the Chengdu-Chongqing urban agglomeration; (4) After considering the spatial correlation, the Chengdu-Chongqing urban agglomeration shows an obvious β-convergence trend. This paper considers whether existing approaches for quantifying variables in cellular automata (CA) modelling adequately incorporate all the relevant factors in typical actor decisions underpinning urban development. A survey of developers and planners is used to identify factors they incorporate to allow for or proceed with development, using South East Queensland as a reference region. Three types of decision factors are identified and ranked in order of importance: those that are already modelled in CA applications; those that are not modelled but are quantifiable; and those that are not (easily) quantifiable because they are subjective in nature. Factors identified in the second category include development height/scale, open space supply, and existing infrastructure capacity. Factors identified in the third category include political intent, community opposition, and lifestyle quality. Drawing on our analysis of these factors we suggest how and to what extent survey data might be used to address the challenges of incorporating actor variables into the CA modelling of urban change. The urban space of a city is the result of social interactions with and between people who use and experience this space, thus configuring the public sphere of a city. We can also consider that the construction of these spaces is directly related to the way in which their free building spaces relate to their built spaces. In a city of heritage character, these characteristics are added to the historical and cultural values that must be protected and valued through safeguard and protection actions. However, current Brazilian legislation acts more on the building, and even including urban complexes and their surroundings, it does not seem to consider that the safeguarding and protection of a city's heritage also involves urban planning, that is, the safeguarding and protection actions must be related to urban planning actions, present both in the master plans and in the intervention and maintenance actions of the existing public space. The general objective of this research was to establish and identify the existing relationships between urban design and urban environmental heritage that considered both the safeguard and protection aspects and the aspects of urban quality. The case study methodology was used, choosing the city of Laguna, on the southern coast of Santa Catarina. The procedures used were: the historical-structural analysis through the study of the urban evolution of the city, the registration process and the current characteristics of its public spaces. We can consider that the research thus contributed to the reflection on the practices of urban environmental heritage protection related to urban development actions and qualification of public spaces. The abundance of arthropods is declining globally, and human-modification of natural habitat is a primary driver of these declines. Arthropod declines are concerning because arthropods mediate critical ecosystem functions, and sustained declines may lead to cascading trophic effects. There is growing evidence that properly managed urban environments can provide refugium to arthropods, but few cities have examined arthropods within urban greenspaces to evaluate their management efforts. In this study, we surveyed arthropod communities within a medium-sized, growing city. We investigated arthropod communities (abundance, richness, diversity, commu- nity composition) within 16 urban greenspaces across metropolitan Grand Rapids, Michigan (USA). We focused our efforts on urban gardens and pocket prairies, and measured environmental variables at each site. We collected 5,468 individual arthropods that spanned 14 taxonomic orders and 66 morphospecies. The results showed that community composition was influenced by impervious surface, white flower abundance, and humidity. Total arthropod abundance and diversity were positively associated with humidity. For specific orders, Hymenoptera (bees, ants, wasps) abundance was negatively associated with temperature, and positively associated with site perimeter-area ratio. Hemiptera (true bugs) were negatively associated with impervious surface and positively associated with humidity. These findings show that impervious surfaces impact arthropod communities, but many of the observed changes were driven by local abiotic conditions like temperature and humidity. This suggests that management decisions within urban greenspaces are important in determining the structure of arthropod communities. Future studies on arthropods in cities should determine whether manipulating the abiotic conditions of urban greenspaces influences the composition of arthropod communities. Urbanisation has been studied almost from the middle of twentieth century by historians, archaeologists, anthropologists, sociologists and city planners who have interpreted it variously. An urban centre would engage with specific functions particularly with regard to the hinterland. In urbanisation comparatively small settlements and simple communities develop into specialised centres and complex societies. As the process of urbanisation is examined from an archaeological or historical viewpoint, the major parameters frequently applied to situate urbanisation are location and size of settlements, large structures, art, writing and standardised medium of exchange. The issue of urbanisation has been studied in detail with respect to Northern India as compared to Deccan and particularly Karnataka. Sannati (Taluk Chittapur, district Gulbarga) in North Karnataka is the main site of investigation. It is a Maurya-Satavahana settlement with some remains belonging to the megalithic Iron Age. Sannati and the nearby settlements of Kanaganahalli are rich in Buddhist structures, sculptures and other antiquities. The author has made an effort to understand if the early historic material culture showed maturity when compared with the antecedent cultures. How did the external powers, such as Mauryas and the Satavahanas influence local development? Did the socio-political order meet the benchmarks of urbanisation? The author in this study has tried to locate urban contours in North Karnataka, especially at Sannati even when compared with other urban landscapes in northern India and the Deccan. Currently, there is limited discourse surrounding the safe operational planning of UAVs within complex multi-stakeholder urban environments. This paper conceptualises a methodology for prototyping a decision support system for urban UAV flight operations planning. The proposition is based on integrating urban 3-dimensional data with the physical factors of UAV flight operations. A simulated, holistic understanding of UAV usage in urban space emerges, enabling better informed decisions by planners around safe flight operations. The feasibility, applicability and benefits of the decision support system and associated policy implications for urban planners and UAV users are discussed scoping further development of this approach. The need to address the challenge of housing demand in cities has not recorded much success. Informal settlements keep springing up in cities of developing countries in a bid to meet this need. However, due to the degenerated nature of informal settlements, efforts are usually made to improve them. Most of the programmes towards the improvement of informal settlements have only addressed the symptoms rather than the causes. This study aims to assess the footprint occupation of informal settlements in Enugu City and identify the factors that contribute to such dynamics. A total of 276 questionnaires from household heads and 47 from urban planners were analysed. Findings revealed that informal settlements are gaining dominance in Enugu City. The 26 identified factors were reduced, using factor analysis, into nine components that accounted for 70% spatial dominance in Enugu City. Informal settlements need to be approached concerning their triggering factors such as closeness to other informal settlements, and low incomes especially from rural agriculture, among others, for an encompassing approach to its management in Enugu City. Understanding how children use streets will allow urban planners to create streets that are livelier and more child-friendly. However, it is still challenging to investigate detailed information on children's movement behaviors on individual streets due to labor-intensive observations, the difficulty of integrating qualitative data, and privacy concerns. With the wide application of vision-based technologies, Researchers can analyze the movements and behaviors of large groups of children on streets automatically and continuously. This study aims to analyze children's movement behaviors on streets utilizing computer vision techniques in urban surveillance systems. The proposed methods automatically extract children's trajectories, calculate movement behavioral features, and classify the movement behavioral characteristics of children. Our results identify five movement behaviors of children on streets: walking, staying, running, accelerating, and decelerating, demonstrating their use of streets. In addition, the results showed the feasibility of computer vision techniques to identify differences in children's movement behaviors under varying conditions, such as day and time, and the potential of street environments to positively influence children's use of streets from the daily street lives of children. Enhancing resilience is critical for coastal urban systems to cope with and minimize flood disaster risks. This issue is certainly more important in Africa, where the increase in flood frequency is a significant concern for many areas. In this context, urban planners need accurate approaches to set up a standard for measuring the resilience to floods. In Morocco, this issue is still not fully covered by the scientific community despite the obvious need for a new approach adapted to local conditions. This study applied a composite index and geographic-information-system approach to measure and map resilience to floods in three northern coastal municipalities. The approach is also based on a linear ranking of resilience parameters, offering a more optimal classification of spatial resilience variation. The results allowed us to identify specific areas with different resilience levels and revealed the relationship between urban dimensions and the flood resilience degree. Urbanization is necessary for the worldwide rapidly growing population to achieve a better living standard. Change of land surface feature is the key consequence of urbanization and it promotes a rise of land surface temperature (LST). The present article analyzes the seasonal variability of LST-normalized difference built-up index (NDBI) relationship on various land surface in Raipur City of India by collecting sixty-four Landsat images of four specific seasons from 1991–92, 1995–96, 1999–00, 2004–05, 2009–10, 2014–15, and 2018–19. Land surface composition and seasonal difference noticeably affect the LST distribution and LST-NDBI correlation. The LST always builds positive correlation with NDBI. The post-monsoon season indicates the strongest (0.72) LST-NDBI correlation, followed by the monsoon (0.69), pre-monsoon (0.67), and winter (0.57). The LST-NDBI correlation is strong on green vegetation; strong to moderate on built-up and open land; and moderate on water bodies. This research work recommends that the environmentalists and urban planners should consider the remaining open spaces for a better ecological condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main objective of the paper is to show the educational novelty of a new subject of the architect's formation curriculum at the "Marta Abreu" de Las Villas Central University (UCLV), aimed at updating and promoting a critical vision among the students about contemporary urbanization processes and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Taking into account the reality and trends of world urbanization processes, the hypothesis is formulated that an education in sustainability needs to develop a social awareness focused on the SDGs 2030. Cities are experiencing increased pressure on social, economic, and environmental sectors due to the rapid urbanisation and increasing risk owing to climate change affecting the urban environment. Solutions such as green roofs are often discussed in the context of smart and sustainable cities as they present a multi-functional and solution-oriented approach to address these challenges. Green roofs become extremely relevant in the context of highly urbanised and compact cities where impervious surfaces are abundant. Therefore, in this paper, we analyse the potential of green roofs at a city scale with the help of parameters such as area and slope of the roof and structure of the building. We also identify the priority zones based on environmental and socio-economic parameters. The study is carried out in the city of Liege, Belgium. The results suggest that around 20% (350 hectares) of the total buildings in the city have the potential for developing green roofs. Moreover, the potential of green roofs is quite significant in terms of roof area in the priority zone. Due to significant socio-economic deprivation in high priority zones, implementation of green roofs might not be affordable. Buildings with larger roof sizes are mostly owned by companies or commercial establishments, thus, making larger roofs more relevant for retrofitting green roof. The present study aims to explore the co-movement between urbanization and environmental sustainability for the period 1950 to 2014 using the wavelet coherence technique within the global framework. The wavelet coherence technique allows us to investigate both the long-run and short-term causal relationships between urbanization and environmental sustainability within the global framework. The findings reveal that (i) wavelet correlation from the global perspectives indicates a significant wavelet relationship between urbanization and environmental sustainability for medium- and long-term horizons; however, the correlations are not significant for the short-term horizons; (ii) significant vulnerabilities in urbanization and environmental sustainability are observed at different periods and different frequency levels; (iii) urbanization has reliable power for explaining environmental sustainability at different periods between 1970 and 2000. Based on our study, we suggest that global urban planners and policymakers should support modern environment-friendly technologies and renewable energies to control global CO2 emissions and pollutions created by industrialization; policy action to fight climate change is as well recommended as evidence supports to compact city theory.
