Although children of all ages have the right to participate in urban planning projects, pre‐literate children's voices are absent from urban debates. In this paper, we explore pre‐schoolers' experiences in, and expectations for, their city by drawing on a participatory research project that used neighbourhood walks and a tile‐based mapping exercise. Findings suggest that young children, although largely absent from planning, policy or child‐friendly city discourses, nonetheless, deeply engage with and value their city and its human and non‐human inhabitants. In our study pre‐schoolers from Dunedin, New Zealand created an urban environment which cares for their citizens by being safe, socially and physically connected and has destinations, amenities and services available for all ages and abilities. We argue in this paper that pre‐schoolers created not only cities based on their own experiences, but 'care‐full' cities that ensure the liveability, flourishing and wellbeing for humans and non‐humans. It aims to improve the construction of ecological civilization and promote the common development of urban and ecology. Firstly, contemporary ecological ethics is explored, and its principles and characteristics are summarized. Then, the technique of convolutional neural network (CNN) image in a deep learning model is analyzed. Finally, deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN) are used to analyze and model the spatial characteristics of contemporary cities based on ecological ethics. According to the investigations, rural residential areas are more consistent with ecological ethics than urban residential areas when compared with the ecological characteristics of farmland and forest, and the highest ecological eigenvalues of the two areas are about 8 and 6. In the analysis of urban space, the maximum value of ecological eigenvalues of an airport is 9, and that of a stadium is 8. However, the scope of their construction that is consistent with ecological ethics is very small. Moreover, the eigenvalues of ecological ethics in the urban business circle of casinos are not only very low (the highest values are about 5 and 3), but also consistent with the construction norms of ecological ethics. The work of urban spatial philosophy is optimized based on the adoption of the DCNN model of deep learning in ecological ethics, which not only provides the reference for future ecological urban planning but also contributes to the common development of urban and ecology. Improving the livability and sustainability of the dense urban environments in the old town of cities has been a focus of attention in urban planning, particularly from the perspective of optimizing facility distribution. Given the study about how to understand the relationship between dense urban form and community facility distribution under the premise of satisfying the walking distance is limited, which caused a lack of basis for environment renewal and facility planning. This study uses Fuzhou, China as a case study and proposes a comprehensive spatial analysis framework based on a walking-based measurement, which combines the quantification of urban form metrics, density analysis, network analysis, spatial autocorrelation analysis, and fine-scale multi-source dataset. Results show that there is a close spatial correlation between the dense urban form and community facility distribution; a few correlations between dense urban form metrics and density of community facilities are significant, i.e., community facilities tend to gather in areas with high distribution density and volume density of surrounding buildings and residential areas, and areas with high flow and visibility of surrounding intersections. These findings contribute to making effective planning interventions for enhancing dense urban form and optimizing the distribution of community facilities, so as to attract and promote the site selection of facilities, and ultimately improve the livability and sustainability of the old town's environment. Exploring the impact of the urban built environment on online car-hailing, an increasingly popular mode of urban transportation, is crucial for developing corresponding transportation strategies and addressing sustainable urban planning. This paper captures that the form and orientation of the neighborhood network have a certain degree of influence on travel behavior. Therefore, the road network orientation entropy indicator is introduced based on the originally built environment elements, and the orientation-order (OO) indicator calculation model is constructed to normalize it. This study further tests and verifies its impact on the travel behavior of online car-hailing, thereby improving the factor characterization of neighborhood design latitude in the urban built environment. From the perspective of spatial correlation and spatial heterogeneity, the optimal models are selected by model comparative analysis, namely, the spatial Durbin model (SDM) and the mixed geographically weighted regression model (MGWR). Based on the optimal model estimation results, the influence mechanism of the urban built environment on the spatial-temporal distribution of online car-hailing travel in three cases (considering road network density (RD), considering RD and OO, considering OO) is compared and analyzed. The results show that the model fitting considering the OO is the best in the above three cases, and the OO has a significant impact on DiDi travel compared with the RD in this study, which verifies the rationality and necessity of selecting the OO in this study. In addition, catering service, corporate business, and OO have significant positive spillover effects, while the spillover effects of sports and leisure service and land-use mix are negative. The indicators of the bus station, residential district, catering service, shopping service, corporate business, land-use mix, life service, and OO have significant spatial heterogeneity. Due to phenomena such as urban heat islands, outdoor thermal comfort of the cities' residents emerges as a growing concern. A major challenge for mega-cities in changing climate is the design of urban spaces that ensure and promote pedestrian thermal comfort. Understanding pedestrian behavioural adaptation to urban thermal environments is critically important to attain this goal. Current research in pedestrian behaviour lacks controlled experimentation, which limits the quantitative modelling of such complex behaviour. Combining well-controlled experiments with human participants and computational methods inspired by behavioural ecology and decision theory, we examine the effect of sun exposure on route choice in a tropical city. We find that the distance walked in the shade is discounted by a factor of 0.86 compared to the distance walked in the sun, and that shadows cast by buildings have a stronger effect than trees. The discounting effect is mathematically formalised and thus allows quantification of the behaviour that can be used in understanding pedestrian behaviour in changing urban climates. The results highlight the importance of assessment of climate through human responses to it and point the way forward to explore scenarios to mitigate pedestrian heat stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soundscapes are affected by several factors and one of them is the activities done in the space concerned. People expect different acoustic environments for different activities, but there is no specific guidance for designing an ideal acoustic environment for different activities. This study aimed to identify ideal urban acoustic environments for four different activities: reading, relaxing, talking with friends, and playing with children. The ideal acoustic environment was evaluated using the soundscape composition concept. The concept was implemented by an acoustic environment simulator that enabled the respondents to compose their ideal acoustic environment and identify the perception of their composition. The sound source selection and perception rating were analyzed to understand the ideal acoustic environment and perception for different activities. This study identified the ideal soundscapes for four different activities and the perception expected to be present in the ideal environments for those activities. It mentions fundamental proximity of carceral logic and an array of concepts operative in contemporary urban planning; and also mentions migration of carceral hardware into the urban environment as the reconceptualization of urban space as already carceral in nature.

Management of flood risk remains a major problem in many urban environments. To generate the data needed for estimation of the flood risk, catchment models have been used with the reliability of the predicted catchment response for design flood estimation dependent upon the model calibration. However, the level of calibration required to achieve reliable design flood estimation remains unspecified. The purpose of this paper is to assess the event modelling accuracy needed if data from the calibrated model are to be used for continuous simulation of data for flood frequency analysis. For this purpose, a SWMM-based catchment model was investigated using 25 monitored events, while the assessment of the calibration was based on a normalised peak flow error. Alternative sets of parameter values were used to obtain estimates of the peak flow for each of the selected events. The best performing sets of these sets of parameter values were used with SWMM in a continuous simulation mode to predict flow sequences for extraction of Annual Maxima Series for an At-Site Flood Frequency Analysis. From the analysis of these At-Site Flood Frequency Analyses, it was concluded that the normalised peak flow error needed to be less than 10% if reliable design flood quantile estimates were to be obtained. Numerous approaches to earthquake risk modeling and quantification have already been proposed in the literature and/or are well established in practice. However, most of these procedures are designed to focus on risk in the context of current static exposure and vulnerability, and are therefore limited in their ability to support decisions related to the future, as yet partially unbuilt, urban landscape. We propose an end‐to‐end risk modeling framework that explicitly addresses this specific challenge. The framework is designed to consider the earthquake (ground‐shaking) risks of tomorrow's urban environment, using a simulation‐based approach to rigorously capture the uncertainties inherent in future projections of exposure as well as physical and social vulnerability. The framework also advances the state‐of‐practice in future disaster risk modeling by additionally: (a) providing a harmonized methodology for integrating physical and social impacts of disasters that facilitates flexible characterization of risk metrics beyond physical damage/asset losses; and (b) incorporating a participatory, people‐centered approach to risk‐informed decision making. The framework is showcased using the physical and social environment of an expanding synthetic city. This example application demonstrates how the framework may be used to make policy decisions related to future urban areas, based on multiple, uncertain risk drivers. Better living environments in cities depends on the quality standards of physical environment and their implementation through city planning. Sustainable urban form (SUF) principles propose designing and planning of livable urban environments by focusing on neighborhood and city-block. The article aimed to evaluate urban areas in Turkey through SUF principles and to contribute into place production practice of city planning. The study searched for the applicability of SUF measures in smart growth, new urbanism and LEED-ND program by discussing through urban design literature and legislation in Turkey. After developing assessment methods for compactness/density, accessibility, mixed-land use, green areas, permeability and diversity, the study evaluated their performance in building-blocks and their environment that are selected among six neighborhoods, which represent morphological differences of residential areas in Yıldırım, Bursa. Although the areas met density/compactness and mixed-land use, problems occurred in balancing sustainable density through open-green areas, accessibility and permeability. Cooperative houses of 1980's satisfied this balance, while central city and inner/outer peripheries have diverse problems due to deficiencies in legislation and social processes. In conclusion, the study contributes into development legislation by proposing standards and design indicators involved with SUF principles regarding the problems of residential areas and their location within city. Urban environments increasingly move to the fore of climate and air quality research due to their central role in the population's health and well-being. Tools to model the local environmental conditions, urban morphology and interaction with the atmospheric boundary layer play an important role for sustainable urban planning and policy-making. uDALES is a high-resolution, building-resolving large-eddy simulation code for urban microclimate and air quality. uDALES solves a surface energy balance for each urban facet and models multi-refection shortwave radiation, longwave radiation, heat storage and conductance, as well as turbulent latent and sensible heat fluxes. Vegetated surfaces and their effect on outdoor temperatures and energy demand can be studied. Furthermore a scheme to simulate emissions and transport of aerosols and some reactive gas species is present. The energy balance has been tested against idealized cases and the particle dispersion against field measurements, yielding satisfying results. uDALES can be used to study the effect of specific new constructions and building measures on the local micro-climate; or to gain new insight about the general effect of urban morphology on local climate, ventilation and dispersion. uDALES is available online under GNU General Public License and remains under maintenance and development. Ecological considerations should be an integral part of the decision-making processes of urban planners. Specifically, ecological aspects used in urban ecology, such as green infrastructure and ecosystem services, are substantiated by literature as strategies for improving quality of life, human health, and well-being. Studies dealing with such concepts in the Global South recently gained interest; however, these lack empirical evidence on the integration thereof in mainstream South African urban planning practice. This article conducts a preliminary investigation into the knowledge of ecological aspects of a sample of South African urban planners and their willingness to implement ecological aspects in urban planning practice. The new environmental paradigm scale is employed to determine the environmental worldview (ecocentric or anthropocentric) among respondents and how this relates to their knowledge of ecological aspects. The initial research sample consisted of a total of 283 questionnaires distributed. Although findings of this article are based on a low response rate (15%) of 42 documented responses, it did not affect the validity of the data collected in this context. The initial findings indicated that the environmental worldview of the sample of planners is only one factor influencing their perspective on incorporating ecological considerations. Low to moderate knowledge and awareness regarding ecological aspects such as ecosystem services, green infrastructure, and multi-functionality are argued to be main factors preventing integration in urban planning practice. Findings emphasize the need for context-based implementation strategies and broad recommendations are made for the planning profession as a point of departure to introduce or ingrain ecological considerations. A transnational flow of capital exchange during the 19th and early 20th centuries brought planning ideas and modernity into China. Since European countries and America used violence to place China into a colonial world and its forms of power-knowledge, the existing works too often focus on the impact of the 'west', treating the Chinese as passive recipients who responded to 'western' transnational planning ideas, while neglecting the transnational flow of Intra-Asia. By exploring the formation of urbanism in Hebei New Area in Tianjin, this article reveals that the Chinese did not allow themselves to be dictated to by the planning ideas emanating from the west. Instead, they both sought the most suitable ideas based on their local situations and actively imported planning ideas from the east – Japan. The authorities in Tianjin sent officials to Japan to draw upon Japanese industrial and commercial planning models to set up their own organizational framework, urban built environments, and operational management. Consequently, they incorporated planning ideas from the 'east' to re-organize the daily life of the masses and modernize their city. In 1895, the Public Baths Association of Philadelphia (PBA) was formed for the purpose of "establishing and maintaining public baths and affording the poor facilities for bathing and the promotion of cleanliness." In 1898, the PBA opened America's first public bath house to offer both bathing and laundry facilities. The six public bath houses erected in Philadelphia exemplify a period of national experimentation that aimed to establish an American standard of bodily cleanliness though architecture, based on the belief that the long- range strategy of urban moral control could be achieved through influencing be havior and modeling character in a consciously planned urban environment. The present paper attempts to fill a part of the gap in the studies on residential location choices and their relations to urban mobility, socio-economics, and the built environment by presenting the results of a study on Alexandria, Egypt, by analysing the results of a survey in eight neighbourhoods undertaken in 2015. Four questions were answered in this study: (i) "How are the main drivers behind residential location choices in Alexandria connected to various socio-demographic groups or people with different availability to urban and built environments?", (ii) "How are the main residential self-selections in Alexandria associated with one another and which are the most important?", (iii) "How are the housing location-related decisions of Egyptians similar to or different from international decisions?", and (iv) "How can planners and decision-makers use the knowledge produced by this study for urban planning and housing in Egypt?". Library work and the results of a Χ2 test of independence show that availability of transportation modes, nice neighbourhoods, and affordability are the strongest motives behind decisions. This study was carried out to determine how the PM10 concentrations changed in the Izmir metropolitan area during the days when curfews were imposed because of Covid-19 Pandemic. In this context, data of eight air quality measurement stations were taken as basis. Within the scope of the study, days when curfew was strictly imposed were compared with other days, specifically between January 1, 2020 and July 31, 2020. Besides, by comparing daily measures taken between 2015-2020 on same days, it has been tried to determine how air quality has changed on an annual basis. While analyzing, Independent Sample t-test was used for daily data. For annual data, Friedman test was used to determine which stations had a statistically significant difference, and then Wilcoxon test was applied to determine in which years there was a statistically significant difference compared to 2020 measurements. All in all, it was found that there was an improvement in air quality in terms of PM10 concentrations on the days of curfew. This study revealed that our daily mobility in the city as urban dwellers negatively affect air quality of environment we live in, and showed the need to consider air pollution when planning our cities. Recent developments in data acquisition technology allow us to collect 3D texture meshes quickly. Those can help us understand and analyse the urban environment, and as a consequence are useful for several applications like spatial analysis and urban planning. Semantic segmentation of texture meshes through deep learning methods can enhance this understanding, but it requires a lot of labelled data. The contributions of this work are three-fold: (1) a new benchmark dataset of semantic urban meshes, (2) a novel semi-automatic annotation framework, and (3) an annotation tool for 3D meshes. In particular, our dataset covers about 4 k m 2 in Helsinki (Finland), with six classes, and we estimate that we save about 600 h of labelling work using our annotation framework, which includes initial segmentation and interactive refinement. We also compare the performance of several state-of-the-art 3D semantic segmentation methods on the new benchmark dataset. This article explores the relationship between institutional environments and individual artists' artistic creativity to provide an understanding of the 'creative city', using urban sculpture planning in Shanghai as a case study. I argue that political censorship alone will not stifle artist's creativity: when authoritarian power interacts with elite social networks and permits a certain form of market economy, artistic creativity becomes concentrated on the technical aspects of artistic representation and can be channeled towards utilitarian projects in service of the community and the creative economy. A less open or tolerant institutional setting results in a type of 'structured creativity'—this refers to novel ideas and artistic expressions that emerge in the process of seeking valuable alternative outlets when facing political constraints. 'Structured creativity' characterizes the 'creative city' in countries such as China. The implication is that such 'structured creativity' contributes to the economy in terms of traditional statistical indicators, but is problematic in other ways. Richard Florida's 'creative city' thesis simplified the relationship between social conditions, creativity and economy; similarly, the complexity of this relationship has been overlooked in the critical literature about this topic. Urban design context continually influences cognition and behavior and shapes human responses for pedestrians. Researchers have studied established the role of context well (Sussman and Hollander 2015; Robinson and Pallasmaa 2015; Zeisel et al. 2003; Wells et al. 2007), but less is known about how variations in the built environment impact behavior performance. The book, Cognitive Architecture: Designing for How We Respond to the Built Environment (Sussman and Hollander 2015), argues that a set of four architectural principles might explain impacts on human mental states. This study uses those four principles to provide a framework to empirically test the relationship between variations in the built environment and behavior performance using a go–no-go task. A framework for autonomous ground vehicle (AGV) path planning using global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) signals and cellular long-term evolution (LTE) signals is evaluated through several simulations and experiments. The objective of path planning is to prescribe the optimal path for the AGV to follow to reach a desired target point. Optimality is defined as the shortest distance, while minimizing the AGV's position estimation error and guaranteeing that the uncertainty about its position is below a desired threshold. Path planning is prescribed via signal reliability maps, which provide information about regions where large errors due to cellular signal multipath or obstructed GNSS line-of-sight are expected. Simulation results are presented demonstrating that utilizing ambient cellular LTE signals together with GNSS signals 1) reduces the uncertainty about the AGV's position, 2) increases the number of feasible paths to choose from, which could be useful if other considerations arise (e.g., traffic jams and road blockages due to construction), and 3) yields significantly shorter feasible paths, which would otherwise be infeasible with GNSS signals alone. Experimental results on a ground vehicle navigating in downtown Riverside, CA, USA, are presented demonstrating a close match between the simulated and experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the urban planning transformed from the scale expansion to an emphasis on stock renewal, improving spatial environment quality and promoting the development of urban connotation, the design mode concerning local conditions, times and residential needs can excavate and reshape more the charm of the residual space between the functional blocks in the city. The definition of contextuality is given. The material and non-material components of the urban context are highlighted. The factors of influence on its formation and development have been determined. It was found that the formed certain architectural and urban planning context, which determines the unrepeatability of the city, is the result of the total impact on the internal features and properties of existing buildings and open urban space the external natural, historical-cultural, historical-political, national, religious and socio-economic, and also information technology and legal factors throughout the entire period of the city's existence. The parameters are highlighted as defining characteristics of the "place", according to which it is proposed to evaluate the "sustainability of the historically established architectural and urban planning context. It is assessed as the preservation and harmonious development of these defining characteristics in eddition with modern new elements and connections. The coordination relationship between urban built environment and transport system is an indispensable field in the study of urban planning. Recent research efforts in built environment and transport system have focused on the effects of built environment on travel behaviors, such as car ownership, choice of travel mode, and travel frequency. These travel behaviors will affect the traffic level. However, research studies on direct assessments of links between built environment and traffic level are still limited. This paper aims to fill this gap by modeling with data envelopment analysis based on Point of Interest (POI) data and floating car data collected in Jinan, China. It is found that the coordination relationship between built environment and traffic level is poor in Jinan. With regard to the built environment input index, the distance from the city center has the greatest influence on the coordination relationship. And for the built environment output index, bus stop influences the coordination relationship most significantly. Evidence‐based colour interventions in the urban landscape are becoming more common in many countries and some have garnered the term "tactical urbanism", defined as relatively low‐cost changes to the built environment intended to provide a quick solution to an urban environment challenge. This article reports on two proposed small‐scale colour interventions that aim to calm traffic, prioritize pedestrian traffic, support safety initiatives, and enhance the urban environment. Inspired by both larger and small interventions around the world, the rationale for two proposed colour interventions in Sydney is described along with the findings of a two‐stage survey conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed colour intervention designs. This paper examines the role of environmental legibility in an era where digital mobile maps guide many everyday journeys. This paper presents data from a real-world navigational experiment, where participants followed urban routes either by using digital maps, or information in the world around them. They then completed an in-field task that probed recognition for environmental features along the routes. As predicted, participants in the digital map group demonstrated poorer memory for elements that underlie legibility, across landmarks, paths, and nodes. However, recognition in this group was moderated by individual characteristics of these elements, suggesting a role for legibility in memory. The concern for urban design in Australia and its role in the creation of urban environments have increased and matured over the last decades. Placing a focussed lens on Australia, this paper aims at analysing Urban Design Guidelines (UDGs) through the three pillars of sustainability. This study set out to identify gaps in the existing UDGs at three governmental levels (national, state/territory and local) and offers avenues for future research and guideline development. The efficiency demanded by the modern world affects most areas of life, including the organisation of space. Industrial production is an emblematic field for this phenomenon, having deeply affected architecture and the urban environment. Before industrial production began inspiring modern architecture, the modernisation of expanding European urban fabric in the nineteenth century was mostly driven by the implementation of new transportation infrastructure ensuring the effective functioning of metropolitan areas. The reorganisation of space at all scales and according to a rationale relating to economic drive, industrial production, mass consumption, or scientific management has been the defining characteristic of the modern era, coupled with and in relation to the unprecedented concentration of population, goods, and services. Purpose: This paper aims to illustrate where facility management (FM) is having an impact on the urban environment and what other work needs to be done to easier facilitate achievement of the sustainable development goals (SDGs). This is important for practices as it highlights opportunities where the FM discipline can develop and to research to illustrate where the discipline is going. The societal benefit is that we see Urban FM as an intermediator between citizens, public and private practices providing the platform of how they can work together for mutual benefit. Design/methodology/approach: The method used is a literature review, looking latest state-of-art in the mentioned field has been assessed and the developments along with potential future research focuses, have been identified. The current scope to expand FM role were also taken into consideration from a recent workshop at the EuroFM conferences 2019 and 2020, several presentations at the CIB World Congress Hong Kong 2019, CIRRE 2018 and 2019, and special Facilities' issue, illustrating how FM works within Urban environments and the potential contribution the discipline makes on neighbourhoods, communities and broader city-scale. Findings: The authors present how FM fits in with a Smart and Sustainable City context by positioning communities as core for meeting SDGs, but they often fall out of needs perspective for hard and soft services. Since 2018, the authors have intensely worked on this topic developing conference papers at both a European and international level. The topic of Urban FM is growing in importance based on out interactions at these conferences and interactions with FM network groups. In addition, the authors have been identifying gaps, with communities that are currently not being met by current urban practice perspectives but could be met through an Urban FM practice perspective. They have engaged an educational perspective of Urban FM by developing workshops, summer schools with students from around Europe and new courses. With a specific focus on this concept, it is important to branch out ideas and disseminate of what a more structured urban FM is. Research limitations/implications: Smart and Sustainable Cities has been a focus for many years now from various perspectives such as urban planning and technology providing solutions and frameworks on how to manage increasing populations in cities. What these studies neglect is a service-oriented perspective supporting the livability requirements and social values of future and current communities living in cities which goes beyond operating and maintaining infrastructure of cities. This neglect which highlights the need to develop an understanding where FM expands its role in the urban environment. Originality/value: The aim is to highlight solidify research that is happening in this area where FM links to the urban environment and the benefit it has in terms of sustainability. It illustrates to practice and teaching that the concept of FM is relevant within an urban environment, creates stronger connections within and between citizens and cities and illustrate how Urban FM is necessary in facilitating community facilities. This article explores the present-day problematic of gender-biased street names as prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa's cityscapes. That is, the abundance of masculine street names as opposed to feminine ones in the urban environments of this region. The article first provides a comparative view on the scope of this toponymic phenomenon in other geographic regions with relation to sub-Saharan Africa. It also identifies few decisive factors in the creation of the gender-biased urban landscapes in sub-Saharan Africa. These factors consist of: recent tendencies in critical toponymy studies; colonial and post-colonial cultures of governmentality; and inadequate urban planning legislation and vision as pertained by post-colonial states. This toponymic problematic is then exemplified in a site-specific analysis of the city of Bindura in north-eastern Zimbabwe. The article concludes with recommendations for designing a more socially inclusive urban management policy in the region, pointing to future research directions of this under-studied phenomenon in critical place-name studies. Wetlands are fragile ecosystems and are important for water recharge in rural and urban landscapes. However, urban occupation patterns do not highlight the local importance of these environments in providing ecosystem services and do not prevent their degradation. A viable methodology for assessing the levels of anthropization is the calculation of hemerobic indices, which in turn are associated with the level of technological dependence of the landscape. The objective of this research is to evaluate the level of hemerobicity of landscapes in the urban core of Inhumas, metropolitan region of the state of Goiás. Five hemerobic levels of wetland landscape were identified, where High and Maximum hemerobic levels predominate, which compromises their ecosystem functions. Cartography based on the principles of Landscape Geoecology indicates hierarchical levels that can be considered by the public authorities in urban planning and management. The article proves that a systematic approach to the urban organization of coastal areas includes complex environmental and recreational tasks. The study examines in detail the need to create a comprehensive strategy for the restoration of the coastal zone. The complex of measures is substantiated, among which the activation of water protection functions of coastal areas, rehabilitation of disturbed territories, use of recreational and town-planning potential of coastal territories for formation of recreational base along water area, development of integrated system of management of processes of coastal zones and integration of ecosystems. The work separately highlights the possibility of creating a recreational cluster that will ensure the continuity of the natural framework, given the multi-vector formation of the urban environment. It is established, that the connection of the recreational cluster with the suburban green strip and water area will create a pedestrian recreational corridor in the city and beyond, as well as contribute to the greening of the city and influence the modeling of ecological infrastructure. Standalone augmented reality (AR) systems have great potential for interactive three-dimensional (3D) geo-visualization. Emerging head-worn AR technologies can display rich graphical imagery of large-scale environments and permit intuitive interaction through gestural and voice inputs. Yet, how users engage in geo-visualization through these interfaces and what interaction strategies yield the best spatial memory and navigation performance remain open questions. In the present empirical investigation, we related user interactions in a 3D geo-visualization application implemented on the Microsoft HoloLens AR system to virtual navigation outcomes. Informed by spatial cognitive theory, we uncovered interaction strategies during goal-oriented study of a 3D urban environment that predicted different aspects of navigation performance. Users who positioned the 3D city model to gain an overhead (i.e. survey perspective) view early on performed best when later following the route from memory. In contrast, consistent interaction switching (i.e. perspective transformation) during study predicted navigational efficiency when participants were unexpectedly tasked to return to the origin of the route. Individual differences also related to aspects of user interaction. This paper introduces the use of graph theory for the study of the work of Candilis–Josic–Woods. Α short introduction to the architects' main strategies as members of Team Χ and CIAM (Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne) critics is given. Geometry and computational design methods for city planning and design are briefly discussed. Definitions of the minimum spanning tree, the shortest walk tree and the Steiner tree are then developed. The research projects these methods onto the main principles of Candilis–Josic–Woods' planning and urban design approach to reinforce their strategic concepts. Distance-related and proximity-based ideas and their importance are sought in the literature related to Candilis–Josic–Woods' body of work. Algorithmic based examples approximating a Euclidean Steiner tree are shown and discussed in the context of Candilis–Josic–Woods' syntax. This paper argues that the generation of additional points through the use of a Euclidean Steiner tree algorithmic process is of importance in the work of Candilis–Josic–Woods as it allows for a systematic but emerging creation of hubs that can be activated as space on the one hand, and facilitate pedestrian circulation on the other. Public transport stops are commonly considered just as functional elements of the transport system. Their design is based on technical parameters and standardisation. Nevertheless, public transport stops can play an important role in the urban environment. Indeed, they can concur to generate and enhance public spaces. However, the idea of transport infrastructures as urban places in all respects is chiefly referred to major railway, metro or intermodal stations. Ordinary public transport stops are as widely spread throughout the city as neglected by urban designers and by the scientific debate. The article explores how the potential role of public transport stops as shaping features of the urban environment is dealt with in the scientific debate, shows some examples that express this potential and proposes five design principles. 3D registration plays a pivotal role in augmented reality (AR) system. The existing methods are not suitable to be applied directly in the mobile AR system for the built environment, with the reasons of poor real-time performance and robustness. This paper proposes an improved 3D registration method of mobile AR for built environment, which is based on SURFREAK and KLT. This method increases the building efficiency of algorithm descriptors and maintains the robustness of the algorithms. To implement and evaluate the registration method, a smart phone-based mobile AR system for built environment is developed. The experimental result shows that the improved method is endowed with higher real-time performance and robustness, and the mobile AR 3D registration can realize a favorable performance and efficiency in the complex built environment. The mobile AR system could be used in building recognition and information augmentation for built environment and further to facilitate location-based games, urban heritage tourism, urban planning, and smart city. Large-eddy simulations of nine idealized heterogeneous urban morphologies with identical building density and frontal area index are used to explore the impact of heterogeneity on urban airflow. The fractal-like urban morphologies were generated with a new open-source Urban Landscape Generator tool (doi:10.5281/zenodo.3747475). The vertical structure of mean flow and the dispersive vertical momentum transport within the roughness sublayer are shown to be strongly influenced by the building morphologies. The friction velocity and displacement height show high correlations with the maximum building height rather than the average height. Well-known roughness parametrizations of the logarithmic layer cannot adequately capture the large spread observed in the large-eddy simulation data. A generalized frontal area index Λ f is introduced that characterizes the vertical distribution of the frontal area in the urban canopy. The vertically distributed stress profiles, which differ significantly per simulation, are shown to roughly collapse upon plotting them against Λ f . The stress distribution representing urban drag can be fitted with a third degree polynomial. The results can be used for more detailed and robust representations of building effects in the development of urban canopy models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the Early Republic, competitions have played an important role in the spatial development of Turkish cities. It started with the planning of Ankara in 1927 and continued for a while in 1930 with the Bursa Municipality State Building Competition. The scope and scale of the projects have grown considerably with new competitions for Ankara in 1932, Samsun in 1942, and Ödemiş in 1944. This series was followed by campus designs and landscape design competitions, albeit in small numbers. The language of competitions was formed by using names specific to the competition site and program, such as "Local Development Plan", "Tourist Settlement Plan", "Urban Renovation Plan." The first time in 1981, "Eskişehir Fair and Recreational, Cultural Entertainment Areas Urban Design Competition" carried the term urban design to the title of a competition. This study examines 111 national and international urban design competitions held in Turkey since 1980s. By producing statistical analyses based on relativly scarce records of these professional events, it problemitizes competitions' definitions, participants, participatory design methods, proposed disciplinary diversity and significant contribution to urban culture regarding today's design environment. Liveability within urban planning is a necessary prerequisite to the development of micro-housing. Liveability may contribute to improvement of urban environments where micro-homes are prevalent, notably, in highly populated urban areas. After a brief review of the concept, discussion is focused on whether the historic centre of Cascais has liveability standards to facilitate micro housing.
