The most crucial aim of the research was to shed light on the factors affecting the selection of axes for expansion in cities. And evaluation of expansion options for the town of Kut as a model for the Iraqi city. In light of this, the research discussed the definition of basic design, urban expansion, the most critical problems and positives of urban expansion, the factors affecting the expansion of cities, and identifying the stages of expansion of the study area and the master plan for the town of Kut, and assessing the stages of expansion. An analysis of the motives that led to the selection of the current expansion axes of the city of Kut since the preparation of its first basic plans research results in several conclusions and recommendations.
