The article reports on the passage of a legislation that would cut the interest rate of federally subsidized student loans by U.S. House of Representatives on January 17, 2007. The bill would save student-loan borrowers up to $2,300 by cutting interest rates from 6.8 percent to 3.4 percent over five years. The lower rate will begin after January 1, 2012 to be able to contain the cost of the $5.8 billion legislation but the Higher Education Act would be amended to make the 3.4 percent rate permanent.
