Renal diseases in dogs can be diagnosed effectively using B-mode ultrasound. Point shear wave elastography (pSWE) has demonstrated usefulness in diagnosing renal diseases in human medicine. However, its application in veterinary medicine is in its nascent stage. It was hypothesized that establishing pSWE reference values in nonazotemic dogs would prove valuable in differentiating renal diseases. In light of this, a single-center, quantitative study with an objective to normalize B-mode ultrasound parameters and pSWE values of the kidney in nonazotemic dogs was conducted. A total of 198 animals presented with clinical signs of anorexia, vomiting, weight loss, and dehydration were enrolled in the study spanning 2 years. Among them, 52 nonazotemic dogs were included as subjects for the study. B-mode ultrasound quantitative parameters, including length (L), breadth (B), height (H), cortical thickness (RCT), and medulla thickness (RMT) of the kidneys, as well as the diameter of the aorta (Ao), were normalized. Additionally, calculated parameters such as L:Ao, B:Ao, H:Ao, RCT:Ao, and corticomedullary ratios were worked out. Point shear wave elastography values were obtained from the cranial and caudal poles of renal cortices using ElastPQ stiffness software. The pSWE values of kidneys in nonazotemic dogs were normalized. The mean ± standard error values were 1.04 ± 0.08 m/s (95% confidence interval: 0.88-1.19 m/s) and 4.18 ± 0.62 kPa (95% confidence interval: 2.93-5.42 kPa). The aim of this study was to look at four ultrasonographic approaches that diagnose acquired reticular diaphragmatic hernia (RDH) using either left or right caudal thoracic approaches (4th/5th intercostal space) and compare them to those made more cranially (1st/2nd intercostal space). Each sonographic observation was made in 27 unsedated, standing animals (22 buffaloes and 5 cattle) that were surgically confirmed for RDH. Using the right caudal thoracic approach, the herniated reticulum was seen as medial to the thoracic wall at a depth of 3-5 cm and adjacent to the cardiac silhouette. With the left caudal thoracic approach, the herniated reticulum was seen at a depth of 10-15 cm beyond the heart, which acted as a useful acoustic window. Compared to the nonherniated reticulum, the herniated reticulum had subjectively reduced amplitude or no contractions. The right cranial thoracic approach detected a significantly (P < 0.01) larger herniation (22.60 ± 1.65 cm) than that of the smaller hernia (14.09 ± 0.82 cm) when measured with radiographs. However, the left cranial thoracic approach was able to diagnose RDH in one buffalo with extensive herniation. In conclusion, RDH was consistently demonstrated ultrasonographically using caudal thoracic approaches, whereas the cranial thoracic approaches were only of value in Bovidae with extensive reticular herniation. Ultrasonographic examination of medial iliac and jejunal lymph nodes were performed in 36 dogs presented to the Department of Surgery and Radiology for spaying and castration. Ultrasonographic features such as length, height in longitudinal plane, shape, ease of scanning, echotexture, and echogenicity were recorded. The medial iliac and jejunal lymph nodes were scanned consistently in all 36 dogs. However, the presence of gas in the intestines affected the ease of scanning of the lymph nodes. The majority of these lymph nodes were easy to scan, and had homogeneous and hypoechoic echogenicity. The dogs were grouped based on body weight and age, and the means of their lymph node measurements were compared; no significant difference was observed. No significant correlation was observed between age, body weight, and lymph node measurements except for a moderately significant correlation between the height of the right medial iliac lymph node and body weight. Eight cows and 7 buffaloes with massive abdominal wall swellings were examined. The aim of the ultrasonographic study was to learn the contents of the abdominal wall swellings. They were divided into 4 groups: Group I (prepubic tendon rupture or hernia), Group II (fibrino-cystic swelling), Group III (abscess), and Group IV (inflammatory swelling). Palpation of the swelling in semidorsal recumbency, needle aspiration, or surgery was used to confirm the diagnosis. In animals of Groups I, II, and III, in the ultrasound, the muscles appeared to separate from the skin at the margin of swelling, thus creating a gap. In this gap, intestines or viscera were seen in Group I, fluid and fibrin shreds in Group II, and encapsulated cavity with uniform echogenic contents in Group III. Intact muscles were followed up to the hernial ring in Group I and throughout the swelling in Groups II and III. From the ultrasound, a gradual increase in the total abdominal wall thickness was observed in Group IV. To conclude, ultrasonography can differentiate hernia from fibrino-cystic, abscess, or inflammatory abdominal wall swellings in bovids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The present study was undertaken to study the clinical and hemato-biochemical alterations, ultrasonography, and surgical treatment of bovine suffering from cecal dilatation and cecal impaction. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted on 11 bovines (9 buffaloes and 2 cattle) suffering from cecal dilatation (n=6) and cecal impaction (n=5). The diagnosis of surgical affections of cecum was made on the basis of clinical examination, hematobiochemistry, ultrasonography, and exploratory laparotomy. Results: A marked decrease in serum total protein, albumin, chloride, potassium, and calcium levels while an increase in lactate concentrations was recorded. Peritoneal fluid examination revealed an increase in total protein concentration. Per rectal examination along with ultrasonography was used as a confirmatory diagnostic tool for cecal dilatation and cecal impaction. Ultrasonographic features of cecal dilatation and cecal impaction were recorded. Left flank laparorumenotomy was performed in six animals with dilated cecum along with colonic fecalith. Post-rumenotomy, these animals were treated with massage of cecum along with kneading of colonic fecalith. Right flank typhlotomy was done in the remaining five animals having impacted cecum for decompression of the dilated cecum. 9 of 11 animals survived which underwent surgery and remained healthy up to 3-month follow-up. Conclusion: Ultrasonography was reliable in the diagnosis of cecal dilatation and cecal impaction in bovine. Left flank exploration after laparorumenotomy is an ideal surgical technique for the management of cecal dilatation, while right flank typhlotomy is ideal for the management of cecal impaction in bovine.
