Latin America has been usually portrayed as an ill geographical space, with no possibility of healing in order to change its current destiny. It is also frequent to think about the crises and setbacks that accompany its history. This essay studies interventions of Latin American intellectuals and publicists who, between the end of the 19th century and the 1920s, resorted to the image of disease --and other associated medical notions-- to explain the tragic destinies of the region and thus defined a repertoire of ideas that seem to have endured. The paper focuses on two moments because of their importance in the emergence of repertoires of ideas, images and metaphors. On the one hand, the 1898 war between Spain and the United States, and European imperialism as a backdrop; on the other, the Great War and its effects, overlapping with the setting of the Latin-American centennials (1910-24), the Mexican Revolution (1910) and the Reforma Universitaria (University Reform, 1918), which began in Argentina but created a university movement in other Latin American countries. Therefore, as a general argument, theis paper argues that it is feasible to organize a body of texts produced in different Latin American countries between the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th that has formed an interpretative repertoire, which operates as a matrix to characterize the Latin American region and associate its destiny to notions such as disease, condemnation, impossibility and failure. Particularly, the paper highlights how references to illnesses in literal and metaphorical senses show the overlap between notions such as disease-conquest-colonization and diseaseimperialism-European decadence. CAPITALISM , *HISTORY of capitalism , *IMPERIALISM , *TWENTIETH century , *SOCIAL change , *MARXIST philosophy , *CIVIL society - Abstract
In the article I move forward with the development of a new theory of World Society, and in particular of a theory of capitalism rooted in the history of the 20th Century, which follows from a proposal for paradigmatic renewal that I call the "World Paradigm". To this end, I engage in a selective dialogue with Marx's work. I start from the assumption that the World Society is created in the middle of the 20th century and, along with it, that the economy is only at that time mundialised, generating a new capitalist formation which I call the "Intercapital System". In this paper I assimilate Marx's methodological contributions to the study of social change and focus on two decisive aspects of the Marxian vision: the genesis and the historical evolution of capitalism. Attention to this last point allows me to analyse - among other aspects - the way in which Marx approaches the "colonial question". Each section of the paper is preceded by my preliminary view of the issue, and the conclusions seek to highlight the value of this proposal for renewal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most of the literature about Revista Moderna (1898-1903) and Revista Moderna de México (1903-1911) assumes that both publications integrate a single editorial project because of its affiliation with the Latin American modernism, particularly with that of the second generation, which presented a more decadent aspect. Although some scholars have noted the differences between the two formats, the petit revue and the North American styled magazine, the truth is that Revista Moderna de México has been reviewed in very similar terms to its predecessor, that is, as a literary, elitist and minority magazine, representative of a group with a specific literary positioning. In this paper, I will examine some of the devices that the editors of Revista Moderna de México used to articulate this transformation not only of format, but also of discursive positioning, mediated by the political and publishing market conditions from that time. This study pretends to draw attention to the set of negotiations and resistance that some agents of the literary field carried out through their professionalization process and their search for an alleged autonomy regarding other recognition figures during the transition from the 19th century to the 20th century. CIVIL society ,TWENTIETH century ,MANNERS & customs - Abstract
Young democracies face many challenges; they must adopt and develop the values and institutions of liberal democracy and those of the rule of law, while strengthening civil society. The culture of legality can be seen as the means whereby legitimacy is granted to existing institutions, in order to lend them validity. Unless citizens use the law to regulate their behavior or institutions in the legal system to resolve their conflicts and protect and promote their interests, reforms are of little use in everyday life. This paper addresses some of the characteristic features of the way Latin Americans relate to the law and institutions in the legal system. While recognizing the heterogeneity within the region, some distinctive features that appear in the existing comparable information bases are described: the LB and the WVS since 2000. The results suggest that political reforms and the functioning of legal institutions have not had a significant impact on the endemic mistrust pervading the citizens of this region. Although democratic development is gradual, there have been no significant changes regarding how Latin Americans relate to the law, at least in attitudinal terms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we study the association between land inequality and civil conflict using a panel of 18 Latin American countries spanning the twentieth century. We find a statistically significant relationship between land inequality and civil conflict onset. This finding is consistent with the ‘land maldistribution hypothesis’ and the view that inequality is important for understanding conflict in Latin America. It is also consistent with recent theories of conflict and the model of revolution applied by Acemoglu and Robinson in their work on political transitions. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This paper examines the impact of countervailing external pressures on labor rights in 17 Latin American countries. On the one hand, these countries have been urged to reform their labor laws and practices to comply with international labor standards, including protections for the collective rights of workers. On the other hand, they have been pressured to adopt more flexible labor markets, which often undermine collective labor organization. After dividing the countries by the type of political regime that prevailed when the pattern of relations between labor and the state was being established, the paper presents and explains the results of indices created to measure two outcomes: labor standards and labor market flexibility. It then analyzes the impact of four types of external actors (the ILO, national governments pursuing trade agreements, multinational corporations, and international financial institutions) on these outcomes, both de jure and de facto. The paper's main finding is that these actors have had an impact on labor outcomes in the region, but that their influence is heavily mediated by domestic factors, particularly historical legacies of state-labor relations. During 1924 the Nave Italia visited every Latin American city with a significant Italian community. This ship carried industrial and artisanal products, and numerous artworks by commercially successful but aesthetically conservative Italian artists. The Italia aimed to establish commercial partnerships with the emerging markets of Latin America, and to extend the political influence of Italy across the Atlantic. To do so, the organizers emphasized the concept of latinità, suggesting a common heritage shared by Italy and Latin America. This paper analyzes the artistic content of the Italia and how it manifested the ambiguities of Fascism's project of cultural colonization of Latin America. While most visitors of the Italia did not notice any anticipations of Fascism in the artworks on view, the Mexican Muralists did. I argue that their violent reaction towards the art on the Italia indicates the presence of embedded traces of Fascism in the apparently inoffensive aesthetic of the decorative objects and artworks sent to Latin America. Most research on British business in Latin America has concentrated on the free-standing companies, such as the railways, which characterised British investment before 1914. Apart from Royal Dutch Shell, the most important new British investments thereafter were manufacturing companies, which steadily increased their presence in the region. Some began to arrive before 1914, but several more made significant investments between the wars, especially in Argentina and Brazil, with a further wave of new investment after 1945. This paper utilises corporate archives, as well as those of the British government and Bank of England, to investigate the financial aspects of their growth. While the provision of finance for fixed investments and working capital was relatively straightforward before World War II, thereafter it became more difficult due to government regulation on both sides of the Atlantic, leading to ingenious solutions to overcome financial challenges. The article presents the development of an idea: American continental unity as an object of study in Latin American intellectual history of the twentieth century. To achieve this, the article is organized in three stages: the idealist, which starts with José Enrique Rodó; the confrontation between Pan-Americanism and Americanism, which rises from the opposition against imperialism and the revindication of mixed heritages (mestizaje); and the confrontation between policies to implement development and revindicate continental unity driven by the Cuban Revolution. The paper emphasizes that gray area that emerges today, marked by an open questioning of national unity as a paradigm; in other words, the paper sets forth a question regarding the political and intellectual relevance of a topic. Understanding the state in Latin America requires an understanding of the challenges and challengers that it is facing. This paper argues that the region's three major transitions at the end of the 20th century (i.e. democratization, liberalization and decentralization) each posed distinct challenges to the state. It then uses the concept of infrastructural power to conceptualize the actors who are challenging the state, distinguishing between those who threaten either its territorial power or its relational power. Turning from challenges and challengers to responses, the paper identifies three different types of changes (i.e. policy, institutional, regime) that states have adopted to undercut, accommodate, or defeat challengers. Finally, the paper underscores the difficulty of measuring state deficits in post-decentralization Latin America. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper approaches the concept of "praxis" as stated by Ignacio Ellacuría, examining it in relation with the main concepts that Ellacuría presents in his work. This concept of "Praxis", fundamental at the moment of approaching the topic of historical reality, last and absolute object of the philosophy, needs to be supported by a series of elements that are rescued in this paper. For doing that we will consider some components of this "praxis", its conditions and its place. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

THEORY of knowledge ,CULTURE ,SOCIAL sciences ,TWENTIETH century - Abstract
This paper explores how practices of sonic recontextualization enacted by both folklorists and the music industry during the first half of the twentieth century have been crucial to the constitution of an aural modernity in Latin America. This is mediated simultaneously by the contradictory practices of epistemologies of purification—which seek to provincialize sounds in order to ascribe them a place in the modern ecumene and epistemologies of transculturation—which either enact or disrupt such practices of purification. Through this I wish to argue that the aural has been a sphere of crucial constitution of Latin America's highly unequal modernity, one that is significant not only in the contemporary sonic turn but that also played a role in defining the very idea of a Latin American lettered modernity. I also explore the relation of this to the construction of epistemologies of traditional and popular musics in Latin America and their role in the constitution of musical ‘knowledges otherwise’. I particularly explore the politics of knowledge of some of the early twentieth cenutry folklorists and their implications for thinking about the structure of knowledge in musical disciplinary fields in a globalized, postcolonial context at a moment in which the sonic is mediating crucial fields of experience and knowledge. The article examines the entangled histories of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America (CEPAL) during the post–World War II era. Born of the same global moment, within two decades of their foundation, these institutions had come to represent two opposing visions of world economic order. Yet their mutual antagonism was not a foregone conclusion, and their identities were not so defined from the start. The binary division between them—as well as the very terms of their debate—emerged not in the realm of abstract ideas but rather in their competition over influence in Latin America. Unlike the history of the UN, the story of the IMF continues to be told as one of projection—of power, ideas, and practices—and reception, of dominance by the North and resistance of the South. By looking at CEPAL and the IMF in tandem, as they converged, diverged, and shaped each other, this article shows the impact of a southern institution and Latin America on the northern institution and the structure of global governance. It contributes to our understanding of global institutional history and economic governance, precisely at a moment when global institutions have lost prestige and leverage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines Ernesto Guevara's educational thought in the historical and intellectual context of mid-20th century in Latin America. Special attention will be paid to Guevara's concern with education and its role in emancipation and revolutionary processes. This analysis permits to ponder the relevance of central ideas which are barely considered today and, most importantly, to revise a key issue to consider the relationships between education and social transformation. This article provides a new perspective on Thomas C. Mann, a Foreign Service officer best known for serving as Lyndon Johnson’s assistant secretary of state for inter-American affairs and coordinator of the Alliance for Progress. Mann is commonly portrayed as unsympathetic toward aiding Latin American development, often accused of dismantling John F. Kennedy’s idealistic aid initiative, the Alliance for Progress, supporting repressive regimes, and vigorously promoting U.S. private investment throughout the hemisphere. By focusing on Mann’s early career, up to and including the Kennedy–Johnson transition, this article seeks to undermine the common image of Mann, revealing instead a dedicated Latin Americanist who consistently advocated aiding hemispheric development. A more accurate understanding of Thomas Mann can provide a starting point for rethinking assessments of the Alliance for Progress, a crucial presidential transition, and Lyndon Johnson’s Latin American record. How are female legislators' political careers affected by a commitment to women-friendly social policy? Are female legislators who focus on women-friendly policies able to rise to the top of their parties, or are they marginalized for their narrow specialization on gender issues? When women rise to positions of power within their parties, are they more or less likely to introduce female-friendly social policies than their less experienced counterparts? Moreover, do voters and party leaders in Latin America, all else equal, tend to reward or punish legislators for narrowing their focus on social issues? To begin to answer these questions, this paper will examine newly updated data on political careers and legislative behavior in the lower chambers of Argentina, Brazil, and Chile to investigate the relationship between political career paths and a focus on female-friendly social policy. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present article proposes to demonstrate the conceptual disparity among some authors with respect to democracy who, despite having a procedural perspective on the same, do not coincide on their classification of situating the year in which the democracies in Hispanoamerica political regimes commenced between the end of the XIX Century and the beginning of the XX Century. For this reason we propose an axis criterion in order to classify the democracies, and we apply this to Latin American countries in this period, more commonly known as the âfirst wave of democracyâ. We then make a comparative analysis of these early democracies. Finally, we create an explanatory outline that permits us to identify independent variables of democratic advancement in this region in this particular time in history. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents evidence on the controversial trip of José Juan Tablada to Japan in 1900. Most scholarship studying the book of chronicles En el país del sol (1919) refers to the lack of evidence of José Juan Tablada's trip to Yokohama. Until now there was no concrete evidence to prove his travel, beyond the book mentioned and some watercolors. As a result of a search at the National Archives in San Francisco among the documents that record the arrival of travelers, I found that passenger twenty-one was, indeed, Tablada, who traveled back from Yokohama on December 5, 1900 to arrive in San Francisco on December 22 aboard the ship “America Maru". This was a crucial trip for Tablada, which marked a watershed moment in his artistic creation and reaffirmed his intellectual passion for the land of the sun. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Current paper analyzes a section of the program elaborated by the Research and Social Studies Institute (IPES) that gathered a large quantity of agents against the administration of João Goulart and prepared a section of the colligation that would trigger the 1964 military coup. They also took part in the civil-military dictatorship by occupying first rank posts in the administration. From such an advantageous condition, the agents transformed structural aspects of Brazilian society since the authoritarian administration was not restricted to repression activities but had essential re-foundational aims. This article examines the life of Sacha Volman (1923–2001), a Romanian exile who became a key conduit for CIA support to Latin America’s anticommunist left during the Cold War. It traces the evolution of the front groups that underwrote his activities, his involvement with institutes for political training and the production of propaganda in Mexico and Costa Rica, and, most importantly, his organizing in support of the short-lived presidency of Juan Bosch (1963) in the Dominican Republic. The article argues that, contrary to traditional accounts, the Cold War environment and the actions of the United States provided certain opportunities for the political left in the region—provided, of course, that it was an anticommunist left. Yet CIA support was a weak form of commitment on the part of the United States. In the end, Volman’s ally Bosch was overthrown and President Johnson sent troops to prevent him from being restored to power, while much of the propaganda produced by his movement was easily appropriated by the very powers that had deposed it. Acceptance of the hegemonic position of the United States and its anticommunist agenda—the same thing that gave social democratic parties their lease on life in the international arena—left them with little political flexibility. The paper presents the “Rinascimental" figure of Enrico Dell'Acqua, entrepreneur innovator operating the multinational markets, between the end of the XIX and the beginning of the XX century, who moved from Busto Arsizio to develop textile factories and trade in Latin America. The first part is devoted to the reasons and nature of the industrial development of Busto Arsizio from the early centuries of Middle Ages to the XIX century from the steel and mechanical to the textile industry. They are found in the good human capital, in the easiness of the communications and in the existence of an high demand for those goods in the near area of Milan and in the open market. The second part analyzes factors of success and difficulties in the expansion of the business of Dell'Acqua in Italy and South America, connecting them to the humus of industrial culture in which he had been grown, to his patriotic impetus in the creation of new Italian enterprises and to his organizational and marketing skills likely improved through an appropriate education. Dell'Acqua' model is that of an entrepreneur-operating in a competitive mass market, who organizes his production and marketing by a plurality of firms operating for his business as contrasted to the “Fordist" model of the Schumpeterian entrepreneur who organizes his large scale production and sales with an inherent tendency to monopoly. The present paper offers a few notes on the impact of North-American films in Latin American society in the 1920's and 1930s, based on Latin- American stories produced during that period. The analysis will be guided mainly by the notions of mimetic desire (Girard) and cinema situation (Mauerhofer), as well as by the updated motif of the double (and its "realist" substitute, the doublé), in such a context. This paper seeks to emphasize the relevance of analyzing the exchanges between local and foreign counterparts. Latin American cultural history, cultural studies as well as architecture and urbanism histories contribute to discuss dependentists analyses on center--periphery relations. Those research lines enable a more productive approach on international circulation of ideas, technicians and urban models as well as international exchanges. The theoretical approach is articulated with a previous research that analyzes the struggle to define diagnoses of Buenos Aires city problems between 1983 and 1992. Those diagnosis are developed by various networks of local professional and technician, related in multiple ways with Spanish peers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PENTECOSTALISM ,RELIGIOUS movements ,TWENTIETH century ,HYPOTHESIS ,DEMOCRACY ,SOCIAL structure ,CHURCH buildings - Abstract
Pentecostalism is a religious movement, spreading, from its origins in the early twentieth century and more strongly since the 1950s, to the entire Latin American continent, mainly through ethnic and class segments located in the lower parts of the social pyramid. With the pass of the time, Pentecostalism showed a great capacity for theological and organisational recreation, but did not cut, despite this, its basic ties with evangelical heritage. This dynamism has strengthened its public presence from the religious point of view while its civic impact is still in great part unknown, and led to various hypotheses that present this movement as associable to democracy and, conversely, as opposed to its founding values and to the change of social structures in a 'progresist' sense. It is clear however that the Pentecostals have been the excuse to debate the issue of 'invasion of the sects ' by those who stigmatised its churches, especially in the 80's. This paper works these aspects and presents methodological demands that seem appropriate to take into account in friture compara-tive studies in Latin American countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
