The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic in late 2019 has led to numerous socio-economic challenges globally and in Türkiye. One of these challenges is the record number of divorces in Türkiye in 2021, mirroring trends in many other countries. This study aimed to uncover the reasons behind the change in the crude divorce rate during the Covid-19 pandemic in Türkiye and to identify the provinces most adversely affected by the increase in divorces. The research relied on TURKSTAT divorce and population data as well as judicial statistics from the Ministry of Justice. A mixed research method, incorporating qualitative and quantitative analysis, was employed to evaluate the gathered data. Factors such as prolonged periods of family togetherness during the pandemic, fear of illness and loss, economic hardships, and psychological stress have contributed to increased instances of domestic violence and, subsequently, divorces. The strict limitations on official services led to a significant decrease in divorces in 2020; however, a surge in divorces occurred in 2021 following the lifting of restrictions. The backlog of cases from 2020 and the postponement of divorce proceedings to 2021 also played a significant role in the upsurge of divorces. Although the overall crude divorce rate increased in Türkiye during the pandemic, the distribution of high and low rates across provinces remained relatively unchanged. Nevertheless, the annual increase in divorce rates reveals that the socio-economically underdeveloped provinces in the East and Southeast of Türkiye were the most negatively impacted areas in terms of divorces during the pandemic period.
