A characteristic‐based Off‐Lattice Boltzmann Method (OLBM) and a stochastic One‐Dimensional Turbulence (ODT) model is utilized for numerical simulation of turbulent thermal convection. Standalone ODT results for low‐order statistics are compared with those from various eddy‐viscosity‐based subgrid‐scale models utilized in Large‐Eddy Simulations (LES) with OLBM. The predictive capabilities of both approaches are discussed by comparison with available reference Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) results. All turbulence models are able to predicted the mean temperature, but fail to fully capture fluctuations. While the OLBM aims to represent large‐scale structures, it misses some constitutional small‐scale fluctuations. By contrast, the reduced‐order ODT model captures small‐scale fluctuations in the vicinity of the wall, but cannot resolve the organized bulk flow. Here, the modeling capabilities of both OLBM and ODT as standalone tools are discussed. On this basis, a strategy for the incorporation of ODT as wall model in OLBM is suggested. Turbulent mixing is an omnipresent phenomenon that constantly affects our everyday life and plays an important role in a variety of industrial applications. The simulation of turbulent mixing poses great challenges, since the full resolution of all relevant length and time scales is associated with an immense computational effort. This limitation can be overcome by only resolving the large‐scale effects and completely model the sub‐grid scales. The development of an accurate sub‐grid mixing model is therefore a key challenge to capture all interactions in the sub‐grid scales. At this place, the hierarchical parcel‐swapping (HiPS) model formulated by A.R. Kerstein [J. Stat. Phys. 153, 142–161 (2013)] represents a computationally efficient and scale‐resolving turbulent mixing model. HiPS mimics the effects of turbulence on time‐evolving, diffusive scalar fields. In HiPS, the diffusive scalar fields or a state space is interpreted as a binary tree structure, which is an alternative approach compared to the most common mixing models. Every level of the tree represents a specific length and time scale, which is based on turbulence inertial range scaling. The state variables are only located at the base of the tree and are treated as fluid parcels. The effects of turbulent advection are represented by stochastic swaps of sub‐trees at rates determined by turbulent time scales associated with the sub‐trees. The mixing only takes places between adjacent fluid parcels and at rates consistent with the prevailing diffusion time scales. In this work, the HiPS model formulation for the simulation of passive scalar mixing is detailed first. Preliminary results for the mean square displacement, passive scalar probability density function (PDF) and scalar dissipation rate are given and reveal the strengths of the HiPS model considering the reduced order and computational efficiency. These model investigations are an important step of further HiPS advancements. The integrated auxiliary binary tree structure allows HiPS to satisfy a large number of criteria for a good mixing model. The present study numerically investigates turbulent momentum transfer in concentric coaxial (annular) pipe flow with small radius ratios (η=Ri/Ro=0.1,0.04,0.02)$(\eta ={R}_{i}/{R}_{o}=0.1,0.04,0.02)$. To model the flow, a stochastic one‐dimensional turbulence (ODT) model formulated for cylindrical geometry is used that provides full‐scale resolution along a representative radial coordinate. The present investigation extends the model validation by Tsai et al. (PAMM, 22:e202200272, 2023), to radius ratios smaller than 0.1 and addresses boundary layers with strong spanwise curvature effects. The focus is on the assessment and analysis of statistical flow features in the vicinity of the inner cylinder wall, particularly in cases with small radius ratios. Following Boersma & Breugem (Flow Turbul. Combust., 86:113–127, 2011), classical boundary‐layer and mixing‐length theory is utilized to analyze the model predictions. The results demonstrate that the ODT model captures leading‐order curvature and mixing‐length effects by its physics‐compatible construction. Utilizing the model for extrapolation to high Reynolds numbers inaccessible to conventional high‐fidelity numerical approaches shows that curvature effects persist and nonlocally affect the entire boundary layer. Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes simulation (RaNS) is state‐of‐the‐art for numerical analysis of complex flows at high Reynolds number. Standalone RaNS may yield a reasonable estimate of the wall‐shear stress and turbulent drag if a proper wall‐function is prescribed, but detailed turbulence statistics cannot be obtained, especially at the wall. This lack in modeling is addressed here by a stochastic deconvolution strategy based on a stochastic one‐dimensional turbulence (ODT) model. Here, a one‐way coupling strategy is proposed in which a forcing term is computed from the balanced RaNS solution that is in turn utilized in the ODT model. The temporally developing ODT solution exhibits turbulent perturbations but relaxes toward the local RaNS solution due to resolved molecular‐diffusive processes. It is demonstrated that the approach is able to recover the distribution of positive wall‐shear stress fluctuations in turbulent channel flow. When formulated as post‐processing tool, it is suggested that RaNS can be enhanced by ODT providing economical means for local high‐fidelity numerical modeling based on a low‐fidelity flow solution. Turbulent mixed convection in an air‐water system is evaluated with a novel numerical solver implementing the stochastic One‐Dimensional Turbulence (ODT) model in a turbulent air flow surrounded by a laminar cocurrent water falling film in a cylindrical geometry. The ODT model is used as a reduced order surrogate model for the effects of turbulent advection, turbulent heat flux, and turbulent mass‐flux within a one‐dimensional domain. An ad‐hoc temporal‐to‐spatial transformation relying on the bulk flow gas velocity is used to obtain streamwise‐dependent statistics of the flow. The ODT simulation results are compared to simulations obtained with the assumption of a quasi‐laminar one‐dimensional gas flow, and to Reynolds‐Averaged Navier‐Stokes (RANS) reference data for a cocurrent water falling film evaporator [1]. The results show that the turbulent transport plays a decisive role in the estimation of interface gradients of temperature and vapor mass fraction. Although ODT predicts global quantities such as the interface temperature in a reasonable way, the model falls short of successfully predicting streamwise‐dependent radial profiles. Despite the shortcomings, the framework presented here is the first stepping stone towards the evaluation of complex multiphase momentum, mass, and heat transfer couplings with full scale resolution on potential evaporative devices. One-dimensional turbulence (ODT) is a simulation methodology that represents the essential physics of three-dimensional turbulence through stochastic resolution of the full range of length and time scales on a one-dimensional domain. In the present study, full compressible modifications are incorporated into ODT methodology, based on an Eulerian framework and a conservative form of the governing equations. In the deterministic part of this approach, a shock capturing scheme is introduced for the first time. In the stochastic part, one-dimensional eddy events are modeled and sampled according to standard methods for compressible flow simulation. Time advancement adjustments are made to balance comparable time steps between the deterministic and stochastic parts in compressible flows. Canonical shock–turbulence interaction cases involving Richtmyer–Meshkov instability at Mach numbers 1.24, 1.5, and 1.98 are simulated to validate the extended model. The ODT results are compared with available reference data from large eddy simulations and laboratory experiments. The introduction of a shock capturing scheme significantly improves the performance of the ODT method, and the results for turbulent kinetic energy are qualitatively improved compared with those of a previous compressible Lagrangian ODT method [Jozefik et al., "Simulation of shock–turbulence interaction in non-reactive flow and in turbulent deflagration and detonation regimes using one-dimensional turbulence," Combust. Flame 164, 53 (2016)]. For the time evolution of profiles of the turbulent mixing zone width, ensemble-averaged density, and specific heat ratio, the new model also yields good to reasonable results. Furthermore, it is found that the viscous penalty parameter Z of the ODT model is insensitive to compressibility effects in turbulent flows without wall effects. A small value of Z is appropriate for turbulent flows with weak wall effects, and the parameter Z serves to suppress extremely small eddy events that would be dissipated instantly by viscosity. Accurate but economical modeling of supersonic turbulent boundary layers is a standing challenge due to the intricate entanglement of temperature, density, and velocity fluctuations on top of the mean-field variation. Application of the van Driest transformation may describe well the mean state but cannot provide detailed flow information. This lack-in modeling coarse and fine-scale variability is addressed by the present study using a stochastic one-dimensional turbulence (ODT) model. ODT is a simulation methodology that represents the evolution of turbulent flow in a low-dimensional stochastic way. In this study, ODT is extended to fully compressible flows. An Eulerian framework and a conservative form of the governing equations serve as the basis of the compressible ODT model. Computational methods for statistical properties based on ODT realizations are also extended to compressible flows, and a comprehensive way of turbulent kinetic energy budget calculation based on compressible ODT is put forward for the first time. Two canonical direct numerical simulation cases of supersonic isothermal-wall channel flow at Mach numbers 1.5 and 3.0 with bulk Reynolds numbers 3000 and 4880, respectively, are used to validate the extended model. A rigorous numerical validation is presented, including the first-order mean statistics, the second-order root mean square statistics, and higher-order turbulent fluctuation statistics. In ODT results, both mean and root mean square profiles are accurately captured in the near-wall region. Near-wall temperature spectra reveal that temperature fluctuations are amplified at all turbulent scales as the effects of compressibility increase. This phenomenon is caused by intensified viscous heating at a higher Mach number, which is indicated by the steeper profiles of viscous turbulent kinetic energy budget terms in the very near-wall region. The low computational cost and predictive capabilities of ODT suggest that it is a promising approach for detailed modeling of highly turbulent compressible boundary layers. Furthermore, it is found that the ODT model requires a Mach-number-dependent increase in a viscous penalty parameter Z in wall-bounded turbulent flows to enable accurate capture of the buffer layer. An accurate prediction of the turbulent jet noise is usually only possible with direct numerical simulation (DNS) or high-resolution large-eddy simulation (LES) of the turbulent sources in the acoustic near field. The required level of fidelity comes at the price of high numerical resolution requirements, a severe restriction of the accessible parameter space, and high computational costs in general. These limitations can be partially mitigated by reduced-order models. In the present work, the stochastic one-dimensional turbulence (ODT) model is utilized as a stand-alone tool in order to study turbulent fluctuations in the far downstream region of turbulent round jets with finite co-flow velocity. ODT is a dimensionally reduced turbulence model that aims to resolve flow-field over a broad range of scales and, thus, the turbulent noise sources at all relevant scales, but only for a single, radially oriented, physical coordinate that is advected downstream with the flow during a simulation run. Here, unheated round jets with nozzle diameter D, nominal Mach number Ma = 0.9 but Reynolds number R e D ∈ { 9 × 10 4 , 2 × 10 5 , 4 × 10 5 } are studied as a canonical problem. An ensemble of ODT realizations is used to obtain flow statistics from a detailed representation of fluctuations that may be used to estimate turbulent noise by small-scale resolved sources in the near future. As the first step in this direction, we analyze the model representation of the flow field and the participating flow scales in detail. This is done even far downstream of the nozzle, which is not possible with high-resolution LES or DNS. The present ODT results agree well with the available reference data. The model accurately reproduces the asymptotic mean and fluctuating velocity behavior, and radial turbulence spectra of the jet that approximately obey large-scale jet similarity but are modified by axially decreasing the turbulence intensity. Small-scale processes in atmospheric boundary layers are typically not resolved due to cost constraints but modeled based on physical relations with the resolved scales, neglecting expensive backscatter. This lack in modeling is addressed in the present study with the aid of the one-dimensional turbulence (ODT) model. ODT is applied as stand-alone column model to numerically investigate stratification effects in long-lived transient Ekman flows as canonical example of polar boundary layers by resolving turbulent winds and fluctuating temperature profiles on all relevant scales of the flow. We first calibrate the adjustable model parameters for neutral cases based on the surface drag law which yields slightly different optimal model set-ups for finite low and moderate Reynolds numbers. For the stably stratified cases, previously calibrated parameters are kept fixed and the model predictions are compared with various reference numerical simulations and also observations by an exploitation of boundary layer similarity. ODT reasonably captures the temporally developing flow for various prescribed stratification profiles, but fails to fully capture the near-surface laminarization by remaining longer in a fully developed turbulent state, which suggests preferential applicability to high-Reynolds-number flow regimes. Nevertheless, the model suggests that large near-surface turbulence scales are primarily affected by the developing stratification due to scale-selective buoyancy damping which agrees with the literature. The variability of the wind-turning angle represented by the ensemble of stratified cases simulated covers a wider range than reference reanalysis data. The present study suggests that the vertical-column ODT formulation that is highly resolved in space and time can help to accurately represent multi-physics boundary-layer and subgrid-scale processes, offering new opportunities for analysis of very stable polar boundary layer and atmospheric chemistry applications. The One‐Dimensional Turbulence (ODT) model framework for the simulation of particle‐laden wire‐tube electrostatic precipitators is detailed in this work by specifying initial conditions, governing equations, and the mechanism for two‐way coupling between the electrostatic fields and the hydrodynamic flow. Unlike in a previous investigation [1], a two‐way coupling is required due to the low electrical mobility of aerosol particles, making flow motion responsible for the appearance of electrical convective currents. The ultimate goal of this framework is to develop a method which is able to investigate the precipitation phenomenon in wire‐tube precipitators, e.g., the collection efficiency, while relying on highly resolved physics. Turbulent electroconvection denotes a fluctuating multiphysical flow in which hydrodynamics and electrokinetics interact on multiple scales. The dynamical processes at work are entangled down to the molecular‐diffusive scales that are determined by the Schmidt (Sc) and Reynolds (Re) number. Turbulence properties are generally nonuniversal which leads to high numerical resolution requirements. We address the numerical challenges associated with accuracy and feasibility by utilizing a stochastic one‐dimensional turbulence (ODT) model. Here, ODT is applied to turbulent Couette flow of dilute electrolytes as canonical problem for turbulent electroconvection. For Sc ⩾ O(10), ODT predicts an increase of the skin friction drag due to electrohydrodynamically (EHD) enhanced small‐scale eddy production once the flow is sufficiently turbulent. The incompressible temporally developing turbulent boundary layer (TBL) is analysed using the map-based stochastic one-dimensional turbulence (ODT) model. The TBL is a canonical flow problem, which is, in the present study, formed by a planar moving wall and a free stream at rest. An understanding of this idealised flow is of fundamental relevance for the numerical analysis of turbulent boundary-layer-type flows. In the present ODT simulations, the flow variables are resolved on all scales along a wall-normal, one-dimensional domain. These variables are evolved by a deterministic and a stochastic process. The latter models the effect of turbulent advection and pressure fluctuations, whereas the former represents molecular diffusion. The model is appropriate for high Reynolds numbers for which the turbulence field exhibits a broad range of scales and is notionally featureless. We show that ODT is able to capture salient features of the TBL by comparing the various statistics with available reference direct numerical simulation (DNS) results for different bulk Reynolds numbers in the range 250 ≤ R e b ≤ 2000 using fixed model parameters. The influence of the model parameters is analysed for R e b = 1000 and optimal parameter values are provided. The results discussed in this paper suggest that ODT is an economical and reasonably accurate approach for the simulation of transient turbulent boundary-layer-type flows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate turbulent Couette flows of dilute, weakly‐conducting electrolytes by utilizing the stochastic one‐dimensional turbulence (ODT) model. The flow is driven by relative motion of the top and bottom wall and affected by an electric field between these walls that is prescribed by a voltage difference. The electrolytes considered have zero bulk charge and consist of two ion species with the same mobility, valence, and initial concentration. The stochastic model predicts a decrease of the mean streamwise velocity when an external voltage is applied provided that both Schmidt (Sc) and Reynolds (Re) numbers are sufficiently large, that is, Sc ≥ 30 for Re = 12000 investigated. The effect observed is relevant for flow control, but the mechanism awaits clarification. Present ODT results may help to develop this understanding or design laboratory experiments. We numerically investigate stable and intermittently unstable Ekman–Stokes boundary layers (ESBLs) as canonical problem for oscillatory near‐surface flows in Earth's ocean and atmosphere. The configuration is given by a neutrally‐stratified Newtonian fluid above a horizontal wall that resides in a rotating frame of reference. A flow is excited relative to this frame by lateral wall oscillations with prescribed amplitude and frequency. We utilize the stochastic one‐dimensional turbulence (ODT) model and investigate it's capabilities for time‐resolved numerical simulations from the laminar to the turbulent flow regime. The results obtained so far suggest that the model is able to capture the leading‐order transient dynamics of the laminar and turbulent ESBL. The One‐Dimensional Turbulence (ODT) model is applied for the evaluation of internal pipe flows subject to electrohydrodynamic (EHD) forces. The ODT formulation presented here incorporates the effects of the electrostatic potential energy transfer to the kinetic energy of the flow due to EHD instabilities in the presence of a corona discharge. Results for integral quantities such as the skin friction coefficient Cf and the Nusselt number Nu are obtained from ODT simulations and compared to available experimental data [1,2]. Constant volume premixed lean n-Heptane/air autoignition at high pressure is investigated using the One-Dimensional Turbulence (ODT) model. The configuration consists of a 1D fixed volume domain with a prescribed velocity spectrum and temperature fluctuations superimposed on an initial uniformly elevated scalar field. The sensitivity of the heat release rate and pressure evolution to the initial temperature distribution is studied by imposing different initial temperature fields while holding the mean, RMS and integral length scale of the field constant. Three detailed chemical mechanisms are employed for the prediction of autoignition and heat release rate. To mitigate the high computational cost associated with the calculation of the chemical source terms in the stiff complex mechanisms, an approach based on the Strang-Splitting method is presented. Finally, a study of the ODT model uncertainty is carried out. For validation, ODT results are compared to 2D DNS data from Yoo et al. (2011) for the temporal evolution of heat release rate, pressure and density-weighted displacement speed. Ensemble averaged ODT results show good agreement with the DNS data. ODT results generated from varying the initial temperature fields show that the ignition delay time is highly sensitive to the initial temperature field. The ODT model uncertainty study shows that dispersion due to the stochastic nature of the model is considerably smaller than the dispersion resulting from varying the initial temperature field. Overall, this study demonstrates that ODT accurately captures the evolution of complex chemistry reactive flows in constant volume autoignition simulations and that once validated, ODT is an efficient tool that can be used to carry out parametric studies not feasible by DNS. A numerical experiment is designed to study the interaction at the stratocumulus top between a mean vertical shear and the buoyancy reversal due to evaporative cooling, without radiative cooling. Direct numerical simulation is used to eliminate the uncertainty introduced by turbulence models. It is found that the enhancement by shear-induced mixing of the turbulence caused by buoyancy reversal can render buoyancy reversal comparable to other forcing mechanisms. However, it is also found that (i) the velocity jump across the capping inversion Δ u needs to be relatively large and values of about 1 m s−1 that are typically associated with the convective motions inside the boundary layer are generally too small and (ii) there is no indication of cloud-top entrainment instability. To obtain these results, parameterizations of the mean entrainment velocity and the relevant time scales are derived from the study of the cloud-top vertical structure. Two overlapping layers can be identified: a background shear layer with a thickness (⅓)(Δ u)2/Δ b, where Δ b is the buoyancy increment across the capping inversion and a turbulence layer dominated by free convection inside the cloud and by shear production inside the relatively thin overlap region. As turbulence intensifies, the turbulence layer encroaches into the background shear layer and defines thereby the entrainment velocity. Particularized to the first research flight of the Second Dynamics and Chemistry of the Marine Stratocumulus (DYCOMS II) field campaign, the analysis predicts an entrainment velocity of about 3 mm s−1 after 5-10 min-a velocity comparable to the measurements and thus indicative of the relevance of mean shear in that case. Accurate and economical modeling of near-surface transport processes is a standing challenge for various engineering and atmospheric boundary-layer flows. In this paper, we address this challenge by utilizing an economical stochastic one-dimensional turbulence (ODT) model. ODT aims to resolve all relevant scales of a turbulent flow for a one-dimensional domain. Here ODT is applied to turbulent channel flow as stand-alone tool. The ODT domain is a wall-normal line that is aligned with the mean shear. The free model parameters are calibrated once for the turbulent velocity boundary layer at a fixed Reynolds number. After that, we use ODT to investigate the Schmidt (Sc), Reynolds (Re), and Peclet (Pe) number dependence of the scalar boundary-layer structure, turbulent fluctuations, transient surface fluxes, mixing, and transfer to a wall. We demonstrate that the model is able to resolve relevant wall-normal transport processes across the turbulent boundary layer and that it captures state-space statistics of the surface scalar-flux fluctuations. In addition, we show that the predicted mean scalar transfer, which is quantified by the Sherwood (Sh) number, self-consistently reproduces established scaling regimes and asymptotic relations with respect to Sc , Re , and Pe. For high asymptotic Sc and Re , ODT results fall between the Dittus–Boelter, Sh ∼ Re 4 / 5 Sc 2 / 5 , and Colburn, Sh ∼ Re 4 / 5 Sc 1 / 3 , scalings but they are closer to the former. For finite Sc and Re , the model prediction reproduces the relation proposed by Schwertfirm and Manhart (Int. J. Heat Fluid Flow , 28 , 1204–1214, 2007) that is based on boundary-layer theory and yields a locally steeper effective scaling than any of the established asymptotic relations. We numerically investigate the Reynolds number dependency of the transport of a passive scalar in incompressible, fully‐developed turbulent channel flows. The stochastic one‐dimensional turbulence (ODT) model is used to make such numerical simulation feasible up to the friction Reynolds number Reτ = uτ δ/ν ≈ 5200 (channel half‐height δ, friction velocity uτ, kinematic viscosity ν) in the Schmidt number range 1 ≤ Sc = ν/Γ = 400 (mass diffusion coefficient Γ). The ODT simulations exhibit a turbulent boundary layer for which we show that the simulated mass transfer coefficient K+ follows the functional dependency suggested by Schwertfirm and Manhart, Int. J. Heat Fluid Flow 28, 1204–1214 (2007). The agreement is good for Sc ≤ 25 but a different scaling is obtained for Sc ≥ 49 investigated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One‐dimensional turbulence (ODT) based models are able to generate good results for canonical flow problems compared to Direct Numerical Simulations. ODT has been successfully implemented as a sub‐grid scale model for LES problems (ODTLES) delivering promising results. However, due to the computational cost of the ODT model in this scope, there is a need for an even faster model for real world parameter regimes. The Hierarchical Parcel Swapping (HiPS) algorithm used in combination with the ODT model to simulate a channel flow recently provided results with an acceptable quality in a fraction of the time of an ODT simulation. HiPS uses a binary tree to define the fluid domain, and stochastic eddy events are sampled in this tree. A local instantaneous and complete mixing of the cells is performed when an eddy event happens at the Kolmogorov scale. The biggest limitation of this model is that the viscosity of the solution is implicitly defined by the number of cells in a mesh. Further development of HiPS is planned in order to create a computationally cheaper alternative for the ODT model to be used in ODTLES flow simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A map-based stochastic approach, One-Dimensional Turbulence (ODT), is applied to analyze the incompressible spatially developing turbulent boundary layer (SBL). In the present study, the SBL is formed by a plane moving wall and a free stream at rest. The flow variables are resolved on all scales along a 1-D domain. A deterministic process represents the molecular diffusion and a stochastic process is modeling the effect of turbulent advection and pressure fluctuations. Due to the reduced dimensions in the model, it achieves major cost reductions as compared to the full 3-D simulations and is, thus, able to explore large parameter regimes. The simulations are presented for momentum thickness Reynolds numbers, Re θ , varied in the range Re θ ≈ 1968 - 8000. We have investigated various features related to the SBL, such as mean, root mean square, Reynolds shear stress, skewness, flatness and pre-multiplied velocity profiles and skin friction coefficient and shape factor, all for two bulk velocities using ODT and compared our results to the available reference Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) and large-eddy simulations (LES) results. We have further compared the results for spatial and temporal ODT formulations used to investigate the turbulent boundary layer with the reference data at matched Re θ . The comparison presented suggests that ODT is a reasonably accurate approach for the simulations of the spatially developing turbulent boundary layers which can be further improved to yield accurate statistics at high Reynolds number by implementing Fourier transformation of the kernels which in the present formulation of the model is not implemented. Hierarchical Parcel‐Swapping (HiPS) developed by A.R. Kerstein [J. Stat. Phys. 153, 142‐161 (2013)] is a computationally efficient and novel model for the effects of turbulence on time‐evolving, diffusive scalar fields. The characteristic feature of HiPS is the interpretation of the one‐dimensional flow domain or a state space as a binary tree structure. Every tree level corresponds to a specific length and time scale, which is based on a turbulence inertial range scaling. The state variables reside at the base of the tree and are interpreted as fluid parcels. The effects of turbulent advection are represented by stochastic swaps of sub‐trees at rates determined by turbulent time scales associated with the sub‐trees. The mixing of adjacent fluid parcels is done at rates consistent with the prevailing diffusion time scales. In this work, we investigate the influence of turbulent time scale variations on an isothermal series‐parallel reaction scheme. The production of a desired chemical species is evaluated by means of a defined selectivity and is strongly affected by the underlying mixing time scales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The stochastic One‐Dimensional Turbulence (ODT) model is used in combination with a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) approach in order to illustrate the potential of the fully coupled model (ODTLES) for highly turbulent flows. In this work, we use a new C++ implementation of the ODTLES code in order to analyze the computational performance in a classical incompressible turbulent channel flow problem. The parallelization potential of the model, as well as its physical and numerical consistency are evaluated and compared to Direct Numerical Simulations (DNSs). The numerical results show that the model is capable of reproducing a representative part of the DNS data at a cheaper computational cost. Abstract: The One‐Dimensional Turbulence (ODT) model is applied to a constant volume configuration by means of a periodic, one‐dimensional domain subject to randomized ensemble members with initial inhomogeneous temperature fields and homogeneous mass fraction profiles. The multidimensional turbulent interactions in the flow are modeled by the separate implementation of turbulent advection and the diffusion‐reaction processes, neglecting the mean advection of the system. On one hand, turbulent advection is modeled by means of the eddy events defined within the framework of ODT; on the other hand, the diffusion‐reaction system is solved by means of the Zero‐Mach limit conservation equations discretized with a 1D Finite Volume Method (FVM). The treatment is specialized in this work to constant volume systems. Due to the inherent stiffness of the diffusion‐reaction system, an operator splitting approach is also included in the formulation. Results for n‐Heptane chemistry comprising the temporal evolution of the heat release rate, pressure and normalized density‐weighted displacement speed are shown and compared to DNS results from Yoo et al. [Combust. Flame 158 (2011) 1727‐1741], in terms of individual ensemble members and mean ensemble behavior. The results show that it is possible to obtain reasonably good results in comparison to the DNS if an appropriate set of initial conditions is used. Furthermore, it is shown that the model uncertainty is negligible in comparison to the ensemble standard deviation introduced by randomized initial conditions. We summarize the group's progress in applying, analyzing, and improving ODT and ODT-based stochastic turbulence models like ODTLES. Compared to DNS these models span a wider range of scales while compared to RANS/LES (i) the molecular effects are retained and (ii) no assumption of scale separation is made. The one-dimensional turbulence (ODT) methodology is extended to include an efficient compressible implementation and a model for capturing shock-induced turbulence is presented. Lignell et al. recently introduced a Lagrangian ODT implementation using an adaptive mesh. As the code operates in the incompressible regime (apart from constant-pressure dilatation) it cannot handle compressibility effects and their interactions with turbulence and chemistry. The necessary algorithmic changes to include compressibility effects are highlighted and our model for capturing shock–turbulence interaction is presented. To validate our compressible solver, we compare results for the Sod shock tube problem against a finite volume Riemann solver. To validate our model for shock–turbulence interaction, we present comparisons for a non-reactive and a reactive case. First, results of a shock traveling from light (air) to heavy (SF 6 ) with reshock have been simulated to match mixing width growth data of experiments and turbulent kinetic energy results from LES. Then, for one-step chemistry calibrated to represent an acetylene/air mixture we simulate the interaction of a shock wave with an expanding flame front, and compare results with 2D simulation (2D-sim) data for flame brush formation and ensuing deflagration-to-detonation transitions (DDT). Results for the Sod shock tube comparison show that the shock speed and profile are captured accurately. Results for the non-reactive shock–reshock problem show that interface growth at all simulated Mach numbers is captured accurately and that the turbulent kinetic energy agrees in order of magnitude with LES data. The reactive shock tube results show that the flame brush thickness compares well to 2D-sim data and that the approximate location and timing of the DDT can be captured. The known sensitivity of DDT characteristics to details of individual flow realizations, seen also in ODT, implies that model agreement can be quantified only by comparing flow ensembles, which are presently unavailable other than in an ODT run-to-run sensitivity study that is reported herein. Friction factor enhancements in pipe-flows subject to fixed electric fields are evaluated using the stochastic One-Dimensional Turbulence (ODT) model. To that extent, low Mach asymptotics are used to derive the leading order effects of the governing equations in electrohydrodynamic (EHD) flows considering low mobility ratios. Temporal and spatial ODT formulations are then carried out for three different Reynolds numbers (Re = 3000 , Re = 4000 and Re = 5000) at a set of electrohydrodynamic numbers in the range 0 ≤ N EHD ≤ 600. The ODT simulation results are compared to published experimental data on Darcy friction factor enhancements of Nelson et al. (1990). The results signalize the importance of the developing flow for the EHD-enhanced drag. On one hand, the ratio N EHD 2/Re2 characterizes the enhancement. On the other hand, the developing flow and the laminar-to-turbulent transition also have an important contribution to the friction factor. The ODT results presented here show that reduced order models can deliver relevant insights in otherwise numerically challenging flow simulations, therefore aiding the quantitative analysis of experimental observations in EHD flows. The one-dimensional turbulence (ODT) model is applied to a reactant-to-product counterflow configuration and results are compared with DNS data. The model employed herein solves conservation equations for momentum, energy, and species on a one dimensional (1D) domain corresponding to the line spanning the domain between nozzle orifice centers. The effects of turbulent mixing are modeled via a stochastic process, while the Kolmogorov and reactive length and time scales are explicitly resolved and a detailed chemical kinetic mechanism is used. Comparisons between model and DNS results for spatial mean and root-mean-square (RMS) velocity, temperature, and major and minor species profiles are shown. The ODT approach shows qualitatively and quantitatively reasonable agreement with the DNS data. Scatter plots and statistics conditioned on temperature are also compared for heat release rate and all species. ODT is able to capture the range of results depicted by DNS. • We introduce an extension of the spatial ODT formulation (S-ODT), in order to study a variable density internal air flow. • S-ODT results are compared to the results of a traditional temporal ODT formulation (T-ODT) and to reference DNS data. • For bulk quantities, both the T-ODT and S-ODT formulations have a similar performance in comparison to DNSs. • For the evaluation of radial distributions, the S-ODT formulation clearly outperforms the T-ODT formulation. A novel spatial formulation of the One-Dimensional Turbulence (ODT) model is applied to a vertical pipe-flow with heat transfer, analogous to the Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) performed by Bae et al. [Phys. Fluids 18, (075102) (2006)]. The framework presented here is an extension for radially confined domains of the cylindrical ODT spatial formulation for low Mach number flows with variable density. The variable density simulations for air (Prandtl number P r = 0.71) are performed at an initial bulk Reynolds number R e b , 0 , D N S = 6000 and Grashof number G r 0 , D N S = 6.78 × 10 6. ODT results are presented for both the spatial formulation introduced in this work and the standard temporal formulation for cylindrical flows introduced by Lignell et al. [Theor. Comput. Fluid Dyn. 32, 4 (2018), pp. 495–20]. Streamwise bulk profiles and radial profiles at specific streamwise positions for the temporal and spatial formulations are in good agreement with the DNS results from Bae et al. For the present application, the spatial formulation yields physically better results in comparison to the temporal formulation. Overall, the findings in the original work of Bae et al. were corroborated with ODT. Although the framework proposed in this work is not a compressible framework and has some clear limitations regarding conservation properties, we suggest its use for future studies in the low Mach number variable density regime. Modeling turbulent mixing is a standing challenge for nonpremixed chemically reacting flows. Key complications arise from the requirement to capture all relevant scales of the flow and the necessity to distinguish between turbulent advective transport and molecular diffusive transport processes. In addition, anisotropic mean shear, variable advection time scales, and the coexistence of turbulent and nonturbulent regions need to be represented. The fundamental issues at stake are addressed by investigating multi-scalar mixing in a three-stream coaxial jet with a map-based stochastic one-dimensional turbulence model. ODT provides full-scale resolution at affordable costs by a radical reduction of complexity compared to high-fidelity Navier–Stokes solvers. The approach is partly justified by an application of the boundary-layer approximation, but neglects fluctuating axial pressure gradients. It is demonstrated that low-order scalar statistics are reasonably but not fully captured. Despite this shortcoming, it is shown that the model is able to reproduce experimental state-space statistics of multi-stream multi-scalar mixing. The model therefore offers physics-compatible improvements in multi-stream mixing modeling despite some fundamental limitations that remain from unjustified assumptions.
