A new Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) code HAMISH with Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) has been developed to simulate compressible reacting flow in a computationally economical manner. The focus is on problems where high gradients of temperature, density and species mass fraction remain localised, for example within the interior structure of flames. The resolution requirements of such local high-gradient regions often determine the global mesh spacing when uniform meshes are used. The numerical framework in HAMISH is based on an unstructured finite-volume approach together with a Runge-Kutta algorithm for time-stepping. The unstructured Cartesian mesh used in HAMISH allows for adaptive refinement and de-refinement of the local mesh depending on the demands of the flow physics and numerical accuracy. The code utilises an octree data structure and a Morton space-filling curve, allowing efficient cell division as well as straightforward parallel domain decomposition. The spatial discretisation scheme uses fourth-order polynomial reconstruction to evaluate the inter-cell fluxes. A third-order three-step explicit Runge-Kutta time-marching algorithm is used together with adaptive time-stepping with proportional-integral-type error control using an embedded Runge-Kutta scheme. The code is fully parallelised through domain decomposition over an arbitrary number of processors and exhibits a high level of parallel efficiency. In this paper the key capabilities of HAMISH are demonstrated based on a number of test cases. These test cases include (a) simulation of 1-D planar laminar premixed flames to demonstrate the capability of AMR in capturing the sharp gradients within the flame; (b) fully developed laminar channel flow, which shows that the code is capable of refining the mesh in the boundary layer next to the wall; (c) 2-D expanding flame under quiescent laminar condition, which demonstrates that the code is capable of dynamic local mesh refinement based on the position of the flame front; (d) 3-D non-reacting Taylor-Green vortex which demonstrates HAMISH can deal with vortical motion typical of turbulent flows; (e) 3-D premixed turbulent flame propagation under isotropic homogeneous decaying turbulence to demonstrate that the code can be employed for production level DNS of turbulent reacting flows. • High-order Adaptive Mesh Refinement approach for turbulent combustion simulation. • Octree data structure with Morton code indexing. • Efficient mesh refinement and derefinement with automatic parallel load-balancing. • Demonstration of capability on several laminar and turbulent flow and combustion test cases. Abstract: Three-dimensional direct numerical simulation (DNS) of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)-type turbulent combustion operated in moderate and intense low-oxygen dilution (MILD) condition has been carried out to study the flame structure and flame interaction. In order to achieve adequate EGR-type initial/inlet mixture fields, partially premixed mixture fields which are correlated with the turbulence are carefully preprocessed. The chemical kinetics is modelled using a skeletal mechanism for methane–air combustion. The results suggest that the flame fronts have thin flame structure and the direct link between the mean reaction rate and scalar dissipation rate remains valid in the EGR-type combustion with MILD condition. However, the commonly used canonical flamelet is not fully representative for MILD combustion. During the flame–flame interactions, the heat release rate increases higher than the maximum laminar flame value, while the gradient of progress variable becomes smaller than laminar value. It is also proposed that the reaction rate and the scalar gradient can be used as a marker for the flame interaction. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The influence of turbulent Reynolds number on the statistical behaviour and modelling of flame surface density (FSD) transport has been analysed using a direct numerical simulation (DNS) database of freely propagating turbulent premixed flames with values of ranging from 20 to 100. The variation of is brought about by modifying the Damköhler and Karlovitz numbers independently of each other. The findings indicate that the qualitative behaviour of the various terms of the FSD transport equation remains unaffected by the changes in turbulent Reynolds number, but their relative contributions to the transport of FSD are affected to some extent. The effects of turbulent Reynolds number on the modelling of the turbulent transport term, the tangential strain rate term and the combined propagation and curvature terms are addressed in detail. It is demonstrated that model parameters for the turbulent transport and tangential strain rate term exhibit turbulent Reynolds number dependence for small values of and assume asymptotic values for . By contrast, the model parameters for the combined propagation and curvature term are found to be insensitive to the variation of turbulent Reynolds number. Existing models for the turbulent transport term and the tangential strain rate term are modified to account for the observed turbulent Reynolds number dependence. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The transport of flame surface density (FSD) in turbulent premixed flames has been studied using a database obtained from Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS). Three-dimensional freely propagating developing statistically planar turbulent premixed flames have been examined over a range of global Lewis numbers from 0.6 to 1.2. Simplified chemistry has been used and the emphasis is on the effects of Lewis number on FSD transport in the context of Reynolds-averaged closure modelling. Under the same initial conditions of turbulence, flames with low Lewis numbers are found to exhibit counter-gradient transport of FSD, whereas flames with higher Lewis numbers tend to exhibit gradient transport of FSD. Stronger heat release effects for lower Lewis number flames are found to lead to an increase in the positive (negative) value of the dilatation rate (normal strain rate) term in the FSD transport equation with decreasing Lewis number. The contribution of flame curvature to FSD transport is found to be influenced significantly by the effects of Lewis number on the curvature dependence of the magnitude of the reaction progress variable gradient, and on the combined reaction and normal diffusion components of displacement speed. The modelling of the various terms of the FSD transport equation has been analysed in detail and the performance of existing models is assessed with respect to the terms assembled from corresponding quantities extracted from DNS data. Based on this assessment, suitable models are identified which are able to address the effects of non-unity Lewis number on FSD transport, and new or modified models are suggested wherever necessary. Abstract: The wavelet-based multiresolution analysis (MRA) technique is used to develop a modelling approach to large-eddy simulation (LES) and its associated subgrid closure problem. The LES equations are derived by projecting the Navier–Stokes (N–S) equations onto a hierarchy of wavelet spaces. A numerical framework is then developed for the solution of the large and the small-scale equations. This is done in one dimension, for the Burgers equation, and in three dimensions, for the N–S problem. The proposed methodology is assessed in a priori tests on an atmospheric turbulent time series and on data from direct numerical simulation. A database was obtained from DNS of three-dimensional freely propagating statistically planar turbulent premixed flames with simplified chemistry and a range of global Lewis numbers from 0.34 to 1.2. Under the same initial conditions of turbulence, flames with low Lewis numbers are found to exhibit counter-gradient transport, whereas flames with higher Lewis numbers tend to exhibit gradient transport. The Reynolds-averaged transport equation for the turbulent scalar flux is analysed in detail and the performance of existing models for the unclosed terms is assessed with respect to corresponding quantities extracted from DNS data. Based on this assessment, existing models which are able to address the effects of non-unity Lewis number on turbulent scalar flux transport are identified, and new or modified models are suggested wherever necessary. Abstract: Three-dimensional direct numerical simulations (DNS) were carried out to investigate the impact of evaporation of droplets on the autoignition process under decaying turbulence. The droplets were taken as point sources and were tracked in a Lagrangian manner. Three cases with the same initial equivalence ratio but different initial droplet size were simulated and the focus was to examine the influence of the droplet evaporation process on the location of autoignition. It was found that an increase in the initial droplet size results in an increase in the autoignition time, that highest reaction rates always occur at a specific mixture fraction ξ MR, as in purely gaseous flows, and that changes in the initial droplet size did not affect the value of ξ MR. The conditional correlation coefficient between scalar dissipation rate and reaction rates was only mildly negative, contrary to the strongly negative values for purely gaseous autoigniting flows, possibly due to the continuous generation of mixture fraction by the droplet evaporation process that randomizes both the mixture fraction and the scalar dissipation fields. Abstract: Combustion under stratified conditions is common in many systems. However, relatively little is known about the structure and dynamics of turbulent stratified flames. Two-dimensional imaging diagnostics are applied to premixed and stratified V-flames at a mean equivalence ratio of 0.77, and low turbulent intensity, within the corrugated flame range. The present results show that stratification affects the mean turbulent flame speed, structure and geometric properties. Stratification increases the flame surface density above the premixed flame levels in all cases, with a maximum reached at intermediate levels of stratification. The flame surface density (FSD) of stratified flames is higher than that of premixed flames at the same mean equivalence ratio. Under the present conditions, the FSD peaks at a stratification ratio around 3.0. The FSD curves for stratified flames are further skewed towards the product side. The distribution of flame curvature in stratified flames is broader and more symmetric relative to premixed flames, indicating an additional mechanism of curvature generation, which is not necessarily due to cusping. These experiments indicate that flame stratification affects the intrinsic behaviour of turbulent flames and suggest that models may need to be revised in the light of the current evidence. Abstract: A parametric study of forced ignition at the mixing layer between air and air carrying fine monosized fuel droplets is done through one-step chemistry direct numerical simulations to determine the influence of the size and volatility of the droplets, the spark location, the droplet-air mixing layer initial thickness and the turbulence intensity on the ignition success and the subsequent flame propagation. The propagation is analyzed in terms of edge flame displacement speed, which has not been studied before for turbulent edge spray flames. Spark ignition successfully resulted in a tribrachial flame if enough fuel vapour was available at the spark location, which occurred when the local droplet number density was high. Ignition was achieved even when the spark was offset from the spray, on the air side, due to the diffusion of heat from the spark, provided droplets evaporated rapidly. Large kernels were obtained by sparking close to the spray, since fuel was more readily available. At long times after the spark, for all flames studied, the probability density function of the displacement speed was wide, with a mean value in the range , with the laminar burning velocity of a stoichiometric gaseous premixed flame. This value is close to the mean displacement speed in turbulent edge flames with gaseous fuel. The displacement speed was negatively correlated with curvature. The detrimental effect of curvature was attenuated with a large initial kernel and by increasing the thickness of the mixing layer. The mixing layer was thicker when evaporation was slow and the turbulence intensity higher. However, high turbulence intensity also distorted the kernel which could lead to high values of curvature. The edge flame reaction component increased when the maximum temperature coincided with the stoichiometric contour. The results are consistent with the limited available experimental evidence and provide insights into the processes associated with ignition of practical spray flames. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
