The authors observed that the turbine equipped with the lift-drag composite blade provided higher-energy performances than the turbine equipped with the NACA blades based on lift force. Tidal turbines generate energy from tidal currents. The following study investigates the effectiveness of a deep learning-based method for predicting the flow field and flow-driven rotation of a vertical-axis hydrokinetic turbine operating in previously unseen free-stream velocities. A Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is trained and tested using the solutions of five two-dimensional (2-D), foil-resolved Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulations, with free-stream velocities of 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 m/s. Based on the boundary conditions of free-stream velocity and rotor position, the flow fields of x-velocity, y-velocity, pressure, and turbulent viscosity are inferred, in addition to the angular velocity of the rotor. Three trained CNN models are developed to evaluate the effects of (1) the dimensions of the training data, and (2) the number of simulations used as training cases. Reducing data dimensions was found to diminish mean relative error in predictions of velocity and turbulent viscosity, while increasing it in predictions of pressure and angular velocity. Increasing the number of training cases from two to three was found to reduce relative error for all predicted unknowns. With the best achieved CNN model, the variables of x-velocity, y-velocity, pressure, turbulent viscosity, and angular velocity were inferred with mean relative errors of 6.93%, 9.82%, 10.7%, 7.48%, and 0.817%, respectively. Abstract: Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry (ADV) can measure flow velocities in three directions in experimental facilities and field applications. Based on the Doppler shift effect, ADV can accurately resolve the quasi-instantaneous flow field at frequencies of up to approximately 200Hz. However, this technique is sensitive to operating conditions that can lead to contaminated signals containing large amplitude spikes, a disadvantage of ADV. Aliasing of the Doppler signal creates these spikes. Such a situation occurs when large particles intersect the sampling volume or acoustic waves. For example during the characterization of river velocities, sediments floating near the riverbed cause aliasing from particles, and more importantly, surface entrained air bubbles contaminate the ADV signal. Spikes due to air bubbles not only increase the standard deviation of the velocity, but also corrupt the autocorrelation and power spectra. As some of these spikes appear like velocity fluctuations, developing accurate despiking procedures is an important requirement during post-processing of ADV velocity measurements in bubbly flow applications. A new hybrid method is introduced which has advantages over conventional despiking methods such as the acceleration thresholding method and the phase-space thresholding method when using ADV in bubbly flow. ADV river velocity measurements near kinetic turbines demonstrate the proposed method. This method is applicable to other bubbly flow applications to characterize the liquid phase using ADV. Abstract: River and ocean kinetic hydropower involves the use of underwater turbines in external flow conditions. These conditions include reduced velocities due to the boundary-layer of the surrounding walls, and hazardous debris-laden flows such as rocks and boulders during coastal storms or branches and logs during spring run-off. A numerical investigation evaluates the effect of placing an object upstream of the turbine to improve flow velocity as well as create a protective wake zone into which the turbine can be moved during risky conditions. Six different object shapes are compared and critical design elements are identified. It is found that such an object can improve the downstream power density by over 15%, and create a large wake zone capable of accommodating a turbine. The object can also serve as an anchor thus providing added power without a significant expense in some application. Further study of the optimum object is performed. These additional analyses show a greater increase in power output is seen in the simulation when a turbine model is included. By increasing the expected power output, less attractive sites may become more commercially viable. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Oscillating hydrofoils were installed in a water tunnel as a surrogate model for a hydrokinetic cross-flow tidal turbine, enabling the study of the effect of flexible blades on the performance of those devices with high ecological potential. The study focuses on a single tip-speed ratio (equal to 2), the key non-dimensional parameter describing the operating point, and solidity (equal to 1.5), quantifying the robustness of the turbine shape. Both parameters are standard values for cross-flow tidal turbines. Those lead to highly dynamic characteristics in the flow field dominated by dynamic stall. The flow field is investigated at the blade level using high-speed particle image velocimetry measurements. Strong fluid–structure interactions lead to significant structural deformations and highly modified flow fields. The flexibility of the blades is shown to significantly reduce the duration of the periodic stall regime; this observation is achieved through systematic comparison of the flow field, with a quantitative evaluation of the degree of chaotic changes in the wake. In this manner, the study provides insights into the mechanisms of the passive flow control achieved through blade flexibility in cross-flow turbines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During operations, river and tidal hydrokinetic turbines encounter changes in flow direction that decrease their performance. Evaluating hydrokinetic turbines in yaw conditions contributes to estimating turbine performance, power stability, and power delivered to the grid. Water tunnel tests using a 19.8 cm diameter horizontal axis model turbine in yaw operation show the performance reduction using three designs: no shroud, a convergent-divergent shroud, and a diffuser shroud. Experimental results obtained at three Reynolds numbers of 1.38 × 105, 1.77 × 105, and 2.17 × 105 show that the output power decreases in off-axis flows for all designs investigated. The reduction is initially negligible up to a 10° yaw angle, but then increases with increasing the yaw angle. The convergent–divergent shroud experiences significantly less performance loss compared to the other two designs. The maximum performance loss of the convergent-divergent shroud design is 6% on average for the Reynolds numbers investigated. Based on the experimental results and in analogy to the linear momentum theory cosine cubed rule, we propose new cosine relations for shrouded turbines in yaw operations. Depending on the shroud's geometry, the maximum power of a shrouded turbine decreases either with the cosine or the cosine squared of the yaw angle. • It is experimentally observed that power of a hydrokinetic turbine decreases in off-axis flows compared to inline flows. • The reduction is negligible up to 10° yaw angle but increases as the yaw angle increases. • The turbine using convergent–divergent shroud experiences much less performance loss compared to the unshrouded turbine. • For the first time we propose cosine relations for performance loss of shrouded turbines. • Depending on the geometry, power of a shrouded turbine decreases with the cosine or the cosine squared of the yaw angle. Abstract Reducing the cost of hydrokinetic turbines is an important step in the commer-cialization of the technology. One of the costs of the implementation of hydrokinetic turbines is the selection of potential hydrokinetic sites. In this paper, it is proposed that site selection for a hydrokinetic turbine can be improved in river environments in Canada by the use of winter imagery that is available at little or no cost. This is of particular value to remote communities who power their community using diesel fuel, as some pay over $1.00 per kWh. It is shown that river sections that do not freeze during the winter have higher velocity magnitudes than sections that are covered with ice. The average velocity magnitude for open ice locations is found to be 1.09 m/s, with a standard deviation of 0.48 m/s. Ice covered locations were found to have an average velocity magnitude of 0.301 m/s. The relationship between river depth and velocity magnitude is shown to have a low correlation, with an R2 value of 0.185. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Marine hydrokinetic turbines experience non-uniform inflow conditions due currents, geometrical changes in water boundaries, objects located upstream in the flow, and flow disturbances from other marine turbines when multiple units are installed. This paper reports on a series of water tunnel testing to investigate the performance of a two bladed squirrel cage vertical marine kinetic turbine that more closely simulates an array of turbines with one diameter center to canter spacing operating in the wake zone. It provides general results how their performance is affected by wake structures. In this study wakes are created by different sizes of circular cylinders placed at various longitudinal and lateral upstream locations. Results show that a cylinder placed 1.5 diameters upstream of a turbine and centered with the turbine rotational axis has the most power reduction effect. However, moving the cylinders laterally moderates the negative effect of an upstream cylinder and can even improve the performance of a turbine by up to 35% in a laboratory setting due to velocity enhancements on the high torque region of the rotating blade. Abstract: Reported are a series of river velocity measurements taken one diameter upstream of a 25 kW vertical axis river kinetic turbine deployed in the Winnipeg River at Pointe du Bois, located 150 km northeast of Winnipeg. A load-bank located on the river shore provides a resistive load for the turbine generator. An acoustic Doppler velocimeter measures velocity fluctuations at a sample rate of 200 Hz. Analysis of acoustics Doppler velocimeter data measured upstream of the turbine quantifies the variation in the mean and fluctuating components of river flow velocity. Results show that in this particular test site the river contains eddies with the same order of magnitude as the turbine diameter or greater. Measurements upstream of the operating turbine indicate reduction in the mean velocity with eddies breaking down into smaller sizes. These smaller eddies increase the turbulence intensity of the incoming flow and increase the high frequencies energy level in the power spectra. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
