Understanding the biodiversity–productivity relationship (BPR) is crucial for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management. While it is known that diversity enhances forest productivity, the underlying mechanisms at the local neighborhood level remain poorly understood. We established a 9.6 ha dynamic forest plot to study how neighborhood diversity, intraspecific competition, and interspecific competition influence tree growth across spatial scales using linear mixed-effects models. Our analysis reveals a significant positive correlation between neighborhood species richness (NSR) and relative growth rate (RGR). Notably, intraspecific competition, measured by conspecific neighborhood density and resource competition, negatively impacts RGR at finer scales, indicating intense competition among conspecifics for limited resources. In contrast, interspecific competition, measured by heterospecific density and resource competition, has a negligible impact on RGR. The relative importance of diversity and intra/interspecific competition in influencing tree growth varies with scale. At fine scales, intraspecific competition dominates negatively, while at larger scales, the positive effect of NSR on RGR increases, contributing to a positive BPR. These findings highlight the intricate interplay between local interactions and spatial scale in modulating tree growth, emphasizing the importance of considering biotic interactions and spatial variability in studying BPR. Forest growth varies across landscapes due to the intricate relationships between various environmental drivers and forest management. In this study, we analysed the variation of tree growth potential across a landscape scale and its relation to soil moisture. We hypothesised that soil moisture conditions drive landscape-level variation in site quality and that intermediate soil moisture conditions demonstrate the highest potential forest production. We used an age-independent difference model to estimate site quality in terms of maximum achievable tree height by measuring the relative change in Lorey's mean height for a five year period across 337 plots within a 68 km2 boreal landscape. We achieved wall-to-wall estimates of site quality by extrapolating the modelled relationship using repeated airborne laser scanning data collected in connection to the field surveys. We found a clear decrease in site quality under the highest soil moisture conditions. However, intermediate soil moisture conditions did not demonstrate clear site quality differences; this is most likely a result of the nature of the modelled soil moisture conditions and limitations connected to the site quality estimation. There was considerable unexplained variation in the modelled site quality both on the plot and landscape levels. We successfully demonstrated that there is a significant relationship between soil moisture conditions and site quality despite limitations associated with a short study period in a low productive region and the precision of airborne laser scanning measurements of mean height. Tropical forest productivity represents an important global carbon sink, but many tropical forests grow on infertile soils. Efficient nutrient cycling by litterfall has long been assumed to maintain tropical tree growth, but there is no direct evidence that the nutrients cycled in litterfall are essential for tropical forest productivity.To test whether nutrient cycling by litterfall maintains tropical forest above‐ground productivity, we established large‐scale long‐term litter removal (L−) and litter addition (L+) treatments in a mature lowland tropical forest. We hypothesised that the removal of nutrients in litter would reduce tree growth, survival and litter production in L− plots. By contrast, the addition of nutrients in litter would enhance tree growth, survival and litter production in L+ plots. To test our hypotheses, we recorded tree growth and survival every 2 years, and measured litterfall monthly during 17 years of treatments.Tree growth and litterfall declined over time in L− plots, with consistently lower growth rates compared to controls after 8 years, and lower litter production after 4 years of treatments. By contrast, although litterfall was higher in the L+ plots relative to the controls, there was only a minor transient increase in tree growth immediately after the start of treatments. Tree survival declined over time in all treatments but was not affected by litter manipulation.The long‐term decline in tree growth and litterfall in the L− plots provides the first empirical evidence that nutrient cycling by litterfall plays a key role in maintaining above‐ground productivity in this tropical forest. By contrast, the transient increase in growth in the L+ plots can be attributed to the large inputs of nutrients with the addition of the entire litter standing crop at the start of treatments. The addition of nutrients in litter over the long term was nonetheless sufficient to enhance litter production, possibly by accelerating leaf turnover.Synthesis: Efficient nutrient cycling by litterfall makes an important contribution to the annual nutrient requirements of mature tropical forest trees, compensating for infertile soils. Stand density affects the potentially superior productivity of forest ecosystems directly by regulating the light and nutrient availability of trees. Understanding how stand density influences the growth and development of trees is crucial for supporting forest management in the context of climate change. We focused on Liriodendron chinense in experimental plantations created in 2003, with planting densities ranging from 277 to 10,000 trees per hectare at six plots. The leaf structure and photosynthetic capacity of L. chinense changed significantly under different stand densities, which had a negative impact on their biomass (leaf mass) and nutrient (total carbohydrate content) accumulation. Transcriptional differences were observed among samples from plots with different planting densities. The expression of 1784 genes was negatively dependent on stand density, participating mainly in the biological processes of "circadian rhythm", "carbon metabolism", and "amino acid biosynthesis". Furthermore, we identified a photosynthesis-related module and constructed a gene regulatory network to discover that the transcription factors of MYB and bHLH may have important roles in the transcriptional regulation of photosynthesis biosynthesis by activating or repressing the expression of petA (Litul.15G096200), psbE (Litul.10G033900), and petD (Litul.17G061600) at different stand densities. Our study quantified the impact of stand density on tree growth at physiological and molecular levels. Our observations provide theoretical support for plantation establishment of L. chinense. Summary: Understanding how intra‐annual stem growth responds to atmospheric and soil conditions is essential for assessing the effects of climate extremes on forest productivity. In species‐poor forests, such understanding can be obtained by studying stem growth of the dominant species. Yet, in species‐rich (sub‐)tropical forests, it is unclear whether these responses are consistent among species.We monitored intra‐annual stem growth with high‐resolution dendrometers for 27 trees belonging to 14 species over 5 yr in a montane subtropical forest. We quantified diel and seasonal stem growth patterns, verified to what extent observed growth patterns coincide across species and analysed their main climatic drivers.We found very consistent intra‐annual growth patterns across species. Species varied in the rate but little in the timing of growth. Diel growth patterns revealed that – across species – trees mainly grew before dawn when vapour pressure deficit (VPD) was low. Within the year, trees mainly grew between May and August driven by temperature and VPD, but not by soil moisture.Our study reveals highly consistent stem growth patterns and climatic drivers at community level. Scientific consensus is that diverse tree species positively impact forest productivity, especially when species are functionally dissimilar. Under the complementarity hypothesis, differences in species traits reduce competition among neighboring tree species. However, while this relationship has been extensively studied at the community level, there is a lack of understanding regarding how individuals of different species specifically respond to a functionally dissimilar neighborhood. In this study, we used permanent plots from Quebec, Canada, and 19 focal tree species to test whether: (1) tree growth response to neighborhood dissimilarity varies with their identity and competition intensity, and (2) focal tree species' traits explain their response to neighborhood dissimilarity. We demonstrate that: tree growth is primarily influenced by competition, species identity, and their interactions, but that dissimilarity, alone and in interaction with the main drivers of tree growth, explains an additional 1.8% of the variation in species growth. Within this context, (1) most species' respond positively to neighborhood dissimilarity, with magnitude being species and competition dependent, and (2) focal tree traits partly explain these dependencies, with shade‐intolerant species benefiting most from dissimilar neighbors under high competition. Our study provides empirical support for the complementarity hypothesis, emphasizing the small but consistent positive effect of functional dissimilarity on tree growth in local neighborhoods. Our findings identify the species with the highest potential of benefiting from dissimilar neighbors but also demonstrate that the positive effect of neighborhood dissimilarity is not limited to a select few species with specific traits; rather, it is observed across a diverse range of species. Plant growth is influenced by interactions with neighbouring plants. The strength and direction of the cumulative neighbourhood effect on growth can depend on neighbour properties, such as their abundance, size and proximity, as well as the degree of similarity between interacting plants and their traits, which can be captured by the species identity of neighbours. Such interactions are also influenced by the local environmental conditions that are largely determined by climate. Because neighbour and climatic effects are typically explored in isolation, particularly in long‐lived species such as trees, it is unclear how the impacts of neighbours on plant growth shift in response to temporal variation in climatic conditions.Here, we explored how neighbouring plants impact the annual growth of two eucalypts, Eucalyptus delegatensis and Eucalyptus regnans, over three growing seasons in an experimental forest in south‐east Tasmania, Australia. We assessed whether eucalypt growth rates could be described by the number, size, proximity, and species identity of neighbours, and how the strength of this effect was influenced by the growing season climatic conditions.We found that climate and neighbouring plants had an interactive impact on eucalypt growth. Neighbours had a consistent, competitive effect on the growth of both eucalypts in all three growing seasons which was strongly related to the cumulative neighbourhood biomass. The identity of neighbours was important in determining E. regnans growth only, whereby distinguishing neighbours according to functional group best described growth. Over all three growing seasons, we predicted that, on average, neighbours reduced E. delegatensis and E. regnans mean annual growth by 60.5% and 48.4%, respectively. However, the strength of the competitive effect of neighbours on eucalypt growth was related to growing season climate, being strongest when conditions were hot and dry and weakest in cool, wet conditions.Synthesis: Given the consistent results observed in two co‐occurring eucalypts, our findings suggest that drier and hotter climatic conditions increase the strength of competitive effects on tree growth. Global change in the climate is affecting tree/forest growth. There have been many studies that analyzed climate effects on tree growth. Results presented in these studies showed that the climate had both positive and negative effects on tree growth. The nature (positive/negative) and magnitude of the effects and the climate variables affecting growth depended on tree species. Climate-sensitive diameter growth models are not available for white pine (Pinus strobus L.) and white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) plantations. These models are needed to project forest growth and yield and develop forest management plans. Therefore, diameter growth models were developed for white pine and white spruce plantations by incorporating climate variables. Four hundred white pine and white spruce trees (200 per species) were sampled from 80 (40 per species) even-aged monospecific plantations (five trees per plantation) across Ontario, Canada. Diameter–age pairs were obtained from these trees using stem analysis. A nonlinear mixed-effects modeling approach was used to develop diameter growth models. To make the models climate sensitive, model parameters were expressed in term of climate variables. Inclusion of climate variables significantly improved model fit statistics and predictive accuracy. For evaluation, diameters (inside bark) at breast height were estimated for three geographic locations (east, west, and south) across Ontario for an 80-year growth period (2021–2100) under three climate change (emissions) scenarios (representative concentration pathway or RCP 2.6, 4.5, and 8.5 watts m−2). For both species, the overall climate effects were negative. For white spruce, the maximum pronounced difference in projected diameters after the 80-year growth period was in the west. At this location, compared to the no climate change scenario, projected spruce diameters under RCPs 2.6 and 8.5 were thinner by 4.64 (15.99%) and 3.72 (12.80%) cm, respectively. For white pine, the maximum difference was in the south. Compared to the no climate change scenario, projected pine diameters at age 80 under RCPs 2.6 and 8.5 at this location were narrower by 4.54 (13.99%) and 7.60 (23.43%) cm, respectively. For both species, climate effects on diameter growth were less evident at other locations. The Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) is the largest tree species used for afforestation in China. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of site quality, stand density, and tree species composition on the growth and yield of mixed Chinese fir forests and to build prediction models for their stand average DBH (diameter at breast height), average height, and volume. Using 430 plots of mixed Chinese fir forests in the Fujian Province of China, the optimal base models for predicting stand average DBH, average height, and volume were selected from the Schumacher, Korf, Logistic, Mitscherlich, and Richards equations. On this basis, the site class index (SCI), stand density index (SDI), and tree species composition coefficient (TSCC) were introduced to improve the model's performance, and the applicability of the different models was evaluated. The optimal base models for the average DBH, average height, and stand volume of mixed Chinese fir forests all used the Richards equation. The best fitting effect was obtained when the SCI was introduced into parameter a in the average height model, while the inclusion of the TSCC did not improve the model significantly. The fitting effects of the average DBH and stand volume models were both best in the form of y = a 1 S C I a 2 [ 1 − exp ⁡ (− b 1 S D I b 2 ) t ] c when the SCI and SDI were introduced. When the TSCC was further included, the fitting effects of the stand average DBH and volume models were significantly improved, with their R2 increased by 47.47% and 58.45%, respectively, compared to the base models. The optimal models developed in this study showed good applicability; the residuals were small and distributed uniformly. We found that the SCI had an impact on the maximum values of the stand average DBH, average height, and volume; the SDI was closely related to the growth rate of the diameter and volume, while the TSCC influenced the maximum values of the stand average DBH and volume. Background: Declines in plant biodiversity often have negative consequences for plant community productivity, and it becomes increasingly acknowledged that this may be driven by shifts in soil microbial communities. So far, the role of fungal communities in driving tree diversity-productivity relationships has been well assessed in forests. However, the role of bacteria and archaea, which are also highly abundant in forest soils and perform pivotal ecosystem functions, has been less investigated in this context. Here, we investigated how tree and shrub richness affects stand-level tree productivity by regulating bacterial and archaeal community diversity and composition. We used a landscape-scale, subtropical tree biodiversity experiment (BEF-China) where tree (1, 2, or 4 species) and shrub richness (0, 2, 4, 8 species) were modified. Results: Our findings indicated a noteworthy decline in soil bacterial α-diversity as tree species richness increased from monoculture to 2- and 4- tree species mixtures, but a significant increase in archaeal α-diversity. Additionally, we observed that the impact of shrub species richness on microbial α-diversity was largely dependent on the level of tree species richness. The increase in tree species richness greatly reduced the variability in bacterial community composition and the complexity of co-occurrence network, but this effect was marginal for archaea. Both tree and shrub species richness increased the stand-level tree productivity by regulating the diversity and composition of bacterial community and archaeal diversity, with the effects being mediated via increases in soil C:N ratios. Abiotic factors such as water and nutrient availability can exert a dominant influence on the susceptibility of plants to various pathogens. Effects of abiotic environmental factors on phenolic compound concentrations in the plant tissue may represent one of the major underlying mechanisms, as these compounds are known to play a substantial role in plant resistance to pests. In particular, this applies to conifer trees, in which a large range of phenolic compounds are produced constitutively and/or induced by pathogen attack. We subjected Norway spruce saplings to water limitation and elevated nutrient supply over 2 years and subsequently controlled infection with the needle rust Chrysomyxa rhododendri (DC.) de Bary and analysed both constitutive and inducible phenolic compound concentrations in the needles as well as the degree of infection. Compared with the control group, both drought and fertilization profoundly modified the constitutive and pathogen-induced profiles of phenolic compounds, but had little impact on the total phenolic content. Fertilization predominantly affected the inducible phenolic response and led to higher infection rates by C. rhododendri. Drought stress, in contrast, mainly shaped the phenolic profiles in healthy plant parts and had no consequences on the plant susceptibility. The results show that specific abiotic effects on individual compounds seem to be decisive for the infection success of C. rhododendri , whereby the impaired induced response in saplings subjected to nutrient supplementation was most critical. Although drought effects were minor, they varied depending on the time and length of water limitation. The results indicate that prolonged drought periods in the future may not significantly alter the foliar defence of Norway spruce against C. rhododendri , but fertilization, often propagated to increase tree growth and forest productivity, can be counterproductive in areas with high pathogen pressure. Measuring tree growth rates is an important requirement in many scientific disciplines and forest production sector. The assessment of annual volume growth rates in standing living trees, under ambient field conditions without destroying the tree has so far only been conducted with model approaches or by repeated measurements of tree dimensions in the field. This research note proposes a novel simple non-destructive method for the estimation of annual volume increment in standing trees, based on tree ring analysis of sampling of the two increment cores for each targeted tree and simple trigonometry rules. There is increasing interest in optimizing stand structure through forest management. The forest structure influences growth and maintains the structure, promoting sustainability. Structure-based forest management (SBFM), which is based on the spatial relationships between a reference tree and its four nearest neighbors, considers the best spatial structure for the stand and promotes the development towards a healthy and stable state by selectively thinning specific trees. This management method is a scientific approach for sustainable forest management, and appropriate harvesting is the core principle of uneven-aged forest management. However, the application of this approach in the management of uneven-aged mixed stands is a challenge because their dynamics are more difficult to elucidate than those of planted or pure stands. This study presented a stand spatial structure optimization model with a transition matrix growth model for selecting suitable timber harvest during uneven-aged mixed-forest management optimization. The model was developed using three neighborhood-based structural indices (species mingling, diametric differentiation, and horizontal spatial pattern) and diameter diversity indices. The approach was applied to four broadleaf stands in the Maoershan Forest Farm of the Heilongjiang Province. The results demonstrate that optimizing the stand spatial structure with a transition matrix growth model improved the objective function values (F-index) by 23.8%, 12.8%, 14.6%, and 28.3%, and the optimal removal of trees from the stands ranged from 24.3% to 25.5%. The stand structure in the next cycle (after 5 years) was closer to the uneven-mixed state. The main conclusion of this study is that optimizing the stand spatial structure with a transition matrix growth model can improve the speed and accuracy of tree selection for harvesting in unevenly mixed forests, thus helping regulate stable and diverse forest growth. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and tree-ring parameters are commonly used indicators in the research on forest ecology and responses to climate change. This paper compiles and analyzes the literature on vegetation index research on the basis of tree-ring information in the past 20 years and provides an overview of the relationship between tree-ring parameters and NDVI, as well as NDVI reconstruction. The research on the vegetation index based on tree-ring data is mainly concentrated in the middle and high latitudes, and relatively few studies are concentrated in the low latitudes. The tree-ring parameters have a strong correlation with the NDVI in the summer. In terms of tree-ring reconstruction NDVI, Sabina przewalskii is the tree with the longest reconstruction sequence so far, and the tree-ring width is the main proxy index. In addition, combining tree rings with the NDVI is useful for assessing forest decline, quantifying the forest response to drought, and monitoring forest productivity. In the future, it is necessary to consider a variety of environmental factors to find the optimal model construction parameters and carry out research on the climate response of forest tree growth and the reconstruction of the historical sequence of the vegetation index at large spatial scales. There is increasing evidence that the strength of tree diversity effects on productivity varies considerably over the course of forest development. Evidence points to canopy closure and the subsequent self‐thinning as key phases of forest development during which positive diversity effects emerge. A number of studies have shown that self‐thinning can differ among species, and also in mixtures compared with monocultures. Yet, how diversity influences the process of canopy closure and self‐thinning remains poorly understood.In this study, using 11 years of growth and mortality records from a large diversity experiment, we fitted self‐thinning trajectories for 37 tree communities with equal initial densities and explored whether and how functional diversity and identity may affect these trajectories. We then examined whether the diversity effects on self‐thinning were influenced by differences in growth or in mortality.We found that tree communities' functional diversity and identity strongly influence the self‐thinning process. First, we observed that tree communities dominated by early successional species, and slow‐growing evergreens begin self‐thinning at a larger mean tree size. Second, we found that mixing species with contrasting resource‐use strategies, and the dominance of deciduous, fast‐growing species, reduce tree mortality rate in relation to mean tree size during self‐thinning (i.e. shallower self‐thinning slope). The lower rates of self‐thinning in these functionally diverse communities seem to be explained by both an increase in tree growth and a reduction in density‐related mortality simultaneously over time.Synthesis. Overall, this study highlights that increasing tree diversity has the potential to enhance forest productivity in the long term through a better performance during the self‐thinning process when competition for resources is most intense. Climate change is having complex impacts on the boreal forest, modulating both tree growth limiting factors and fire regime. However, these aspects are usually projected independently when estimating climate change effect on the boreal forest. Using a combination of three different methods, our goal is to assess the combined impact of changes in growth and fire regime due to climate change on the timber supply at the transitions from closed to open boreal coniferous forests in Québec, Canada. To identify the areas that are likely to be the most sensitive to climate change, we projected climate-induced impacts on growth and fire activity at three different time periods: 2011–2040 RCP 8.5 for low growth change and minimum fire activity, 2071–2100 RCP 4.5 for moderate growth change and medium fire activity, and 2071–2100 RCP 8.5 for high growth change and maximum fire activity. Our study shows the importance of incorporating fire in strategic forest management planning especially in a context of climate change. Under the most extreme scenarios, the negative impact of fire activity on productive area and total volume mostly offsets the positive effects of climate change via improved tree growth. Dangers confronting forest ecosystems are many and the strength of these biological systems is deteriorating, thus substantially affecting tree physiology, phenology, and growth. The establishment of genetically engineered trees into degraded woodlands, which would be adaptive to changing climate, could help in subsiding ecological threats and bring new prospects. This should not be resisted due to the apprehension of transgene dispersal in forests. Consequently, it is important to have a deep insight into the genetic structure and phenotypic limits of the reproductive capability of tree stands/population(s) to endure tolerance and survival. Importantly, for a better understanding of genes and their functional mechanisms, gene editing (GeEd) technology is an excellent molecular tool to unravel adaptation progressions. Therefore, GeEd could be harnessed for resolving the allelic interactions for the creation of gene diversity, and transgene dispersal may be alleviated among the population or species in different bioclimatic zones around the globe. This review highlights the potential of the CRISPR/Cas tools in genomic, transcriptomic, and epigenomic-based assorted and programmable alterations of genes in trees that might be able to fix the trait-specific gene function. Also, we have discussed the application of diverse forms of GeEd to genetically improve several traits, such as wood density, phytochemical constituents, biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, and photosynthetic efficiency in trees. We believe that the technology encourages fundamental research in the forestry sector besides addressing key aspects, which might fasten tree breeding and germplasm improvement programs worldwide. Key message: We found that the stabilizing mechanisms for forest productivity varied across harvesting intensities in a mixed broad-leaved Korean pine forest. Effects of overyielding at high species richness and species asynchrony occurred only in unharvested and lightly harvested plots, whereas asymmetries between individuals of different size contributed significantly to stabilizing productivity when harvestings became intensive. Context: Understanding the driving factors of forest ecosystem stability has become increasingly crucial in forest management. However, it remains unclear whether and how the stabilizing mechanisms of forest productivity might be influenced by management practices. Aims: We related the temporal stability of aboveground biomass productivity to harvesting history. We further tested how three key driving mechanisms of stability might be modulated by selective harvesting intensities. Methods: Based on a 10-year monitoring (five repeated tree inventories) of a mixed broad-leaved Korean pine forest in Northeastern China recovering from selective harvesting, we examined the relative importance of two diversity-dependent mechanisms (overyielding and species asynchrony) and one size-dependent mechanism (asymmetric growth) for productivity stability across a wide range of intensities (0–73.4% basal area removed). Results: We found that selective harvesting significantly lowered the productivity stability, species asynchrony, and growth dominance coefficient. Growth dominance coefficient had an overall stronger effect on stability than species richness and asynchrony. Moreover, the strengths of stabilizing mechanisms varied across harvesting intensities: effects of overyielding at high species richness and species asynchrony were detected only in unharvested and lightly harvested plots, whereas the explanatory power of growth dominance coefficient outweighed the diversity-related variables when harvesting became intensive. Conclusions: We emphasized the importance to consider both diversity- and size-related explanatory variables as potential mechanisms for the temporal stability of forest productivity. Predicted increases in extreme droughts will likely cause major shifts in carbon sequestration and forest composition. Although growth declines during drought are widely documented, an increasing number of studies have reported both positive and negative responses to the same drought. These divergent growth patterns may reflect thresholds (i.e., nonlinear responses) promoted by changes in the dominant climatic constraints on tree growth. Here we tested whether stemwood growth exhibited linear or nonlinear responses to temperature and precipitation and whether stemwood growth thresholds co‐occurred with multiple thresholds in source and sink processes that limit tree growth. We extracted 772 tree cores, 1398 needle length records, and 1075 stable isotope samples from 27 sites across whitebark pine's (Pinus albicaulis Engelm.) climatic niche in the Sierra Nevada. Our results indicated that a temperature threshold in stemwood growth occurred at 8.4°C (7.12–9.51°C; estimated using fall‐spring maximum temperature). This threshold was significantly correlated with thresholds in foliar growth, as well as carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope ratios, that emerged during drought. These co‐occurring thresholds reflected the transition between energy‐ and water‐limited tree growth (i.e., the E–W limitation threshold). This transition likely mediated carbon and nutrient cycling, as well as important differences in growth‐defense trade‐offs and drought adaptations. Furthermore, whitebark pine growing in energy‐limited regions may continue to experience elevated growth in response to climate change. The positive effect of warming, however, may be offset by growth declines in water‐limited regions, threatening the long‐term sustainability of the recently listed whitebark pine species in the Sierra Nevada. Measurement of the recovery of wood stocks in logging areas in the Amazon helps to understand the efficiency of policies for the use and conservation of native forests. This work evaluated the effects of logging on the dynamics and production of commercial species in the short and medium term in a conservation unit in the state of Rondônia. Structural patterns of the species as a function of mortality and recruitment rates, patterns of average increment in diameter, and estimates of forest production in the short and medium term were analyzed. The study was carried out in an area designated as Annual Production Unit 2 of Forest Management Unit III of Jamari National Forest. In addition to legalized harvesting, there are reports of illegal logging in the area as of 2015. Inventory data from 2011, 2015, and 2018 were used, considering trees of commercial value with a diameter at breast height (DBH) greater than 10 cm. Mortality rate, recruitment, periodic annual increment, absolute tree density, basal area, and commercial volume, by species and DBH classes, as well as the similarity of the species regarding the growth pattern. The population structure of species over the years was affected by tree mortality, mainly due to damage caused by illegal logging. Mean increment values varied by species and diameter classes, and six species represented 72% of the total volume of wood stock. It is important to review the criteria for sustainable forest production in the long term. Thus, it is necessary to promote species diversity and improve public authorities' capacity to enforce and of the private sector to comply with legislation. European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) is an important component of forests in the alpine and continental biogeographical regions of Croatia. This study aimed to (1) analyze the long-term response of beech to climate, (2) identify potentially critical climatic conditions that could negatively affect the radial increment (RI) and vitality of beech, and (3) evaluate differences in the response of beech between the two biogeographical regions in Croatia. We used the 16 × 16 km Croatian ICP Forests Level 1 network. On a total of 25 plots, we cored between 5 and 24 trees for dendrochronological analysis. Tree-ring widths (TRW) were measured and standardized using cubic spline. TRW chronologies for the two regions were calculated and correlated to the temperature and precipitation data and Standardized Precipitation and Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) using bootstrapped correlations. Continental region precipitation from April to August and alpine region precipitation from June to August were significantly important for RI. Temperature was less important for RI than precipitation in both regions, but the importance of the negative impact of above-average temperatures in the continental region and the positive impact of above-average precipitation in the alpine region has increased over the last two decades. A comparison with the 3-month SPEI confirmed the significant influence of high temperatures and the lack of precipitation in August on the RI of beech trees in both regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Evapotranspiration demand has increased rapidly as temperatures have risen, affecting forest productivity. Consequently, carbon (C) uptake by forests is being modified; therefore, a more refined knowledge of the relationships between C capture and hydroclimate variability is required, particularly in drought-prone regions. In this study, we analyzed the relationships between climate and C capture as stemwood through the dendroecological analyses of radial growth in 15 conifer species distributed along a broad bioclimatic gradient in Mexico. The C content was calculated using densitometry data; correlations and mixed models were then used to determine the influence of climatic variables (precipitation, mean maximum and minimum temperatures, SPEI drought index) on tree growth. Each species showed specific responses to the climate with Taxodium mucronatum being the most responsive species. Both precipitation and maximum temperature best explained changes in C capture, with minimum temperature and SPEI playing secondary roles. The winter before the growth period was the most important season for C capture, particularly through positive responses to wet-cool conditions. However, the climatic influences of the current fall and summer were also notable. Seasonal climatic influences have implications for C uptake and forest productivity in the face of the severe droughts that repeatedly affect the study region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nutrient limitation of tree growth can intensify when nutrients are lost to forest harvest, creating challenges for forest growth and sustainability. Forest harvest accelerates nutrient loss by removing nutrient-containing biomass and by increasing nutrient leaching, shaping patterns of nutrient depletion that cause long-term shifts in nutrient limitation. Nitrogen most frequently limits tree growth, but where nitrogen is abundant, nutrient limitation often shifts to phosphorus and base cations, depending on soil mineralogy. We used the process-based biogeochemical model NutsFor to evaluate how multiple elements can limit long-term forest growth via interactions between soil nitrogen (low vs. high nitrogen) and soil mineralogy (sedimentary vs. basaltic bedrock). Simulations were run for 525 years with 40-year harvest intervals for managed Douglas-fir forests of the Oregon Coast Range. In low nitrogen sites, nutrient limitation switched after several centuries from nitrogen to phosphorus, as cycles of forest growth and harvest depleted soil organic phosphorus pools. In contrast, high nitrogen sites displayed severe base cation depletion and reduced tree growth within only one to two rotations, with sedimentary bedrock sites limited by calcium and basaltic sites by both calcium and potassium. Harvesting stimulated the largest fractional losses of nitrogen and potassium across all simulations, and additionally of calcium in high nitrogen sites. These multi-element simulations of interactions among harvesting, soil nitrogen, and bedrock type provide a set of testable predictions to guide monitoring and changes in management aimed at sustaining long-term forest productivity across a wide range of soil biogeochemical conditions. Thinning is an important forest management practice to mitigate the adverse effects of increased drought on tree growth and productivity. However, the responses of the soil microbial community and its functions to thinning and drought have received little attention in planted forests. In this study, we assessed the combined effects of thinning (30% and 45% of trees removed) and precipitation reduction (− 30%) on soil fungal and bacterial communities and the multifunctionality associated with carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling during one growing season (from April to September) in a 16-year-old larch plantation. We found that 45% thinning, but not 30%, significantly increased soil multifunctionality during the growing season (except for April and May) and fungal diversity in June. In contrast, precipitation reduction significantly decreased soil multifunctionality during the growing season and fungal diversity in June. Thinning also considerably suppressed the relative abundance of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi during the growing season, whereas precipitation reduction significantly increased the relative abundance of ECM fungi in June and July. Furthermore, soil multifunctionality was more related to ECM and saprotrophic fungal communities than to bacterial communities. Our results suggest that a high thinning level can mitigate the negative effect of precipitation reduction on soil multifunctionality and fungal diversity, and this effect depends on the sampling month. Therefore, thinning is recommended as a tool to mitigate the impact of precipitation reduction on soil multifunctionality and the microbial community in larch plantations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High abundance of trees capable of biological N-fixation (henceforth "N-fixers") in tropical forests has been hypothesized to drive higher stream nitrate (NO3) concentrations compared to temperate counterparts. However, to date there have been no empirical linkages of stream NO3 concentrations with the productivity of tropical forests. Here, we combined three unique long-term datasets from La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica: 21 years of (1) mean annual stream NO3-N concentrations in six stream sites within the same watershed, (2) annual growth of trees, and (3) annual leaf litterfall. We hypothesized that years of greater growth of N-fixer tree species and of greater leaf litterfall would be correlated with higher stream water NO3-N concentrations. We also hypothesized that landscape position mediates these relationships, with growth of N-fixer trees on adjacent slopes being more strongly correlated to stream NO3-N than the growth of such trees on upland plateau sites. We found that mean annual stream NO3-N concentrations were consistently high (160–260 µg L−1). There was substantial interannual variation in leaf litterfall (inter-year range: 5.4 to 8.1 Mg ha−1 year−1), growth of N-fixers (inter-year range: 1.2 to 2.2 Mg ha−1 year−1), and growth of all other tree species (inter-year range: 2.1 to 3.2 Mg ha−1 year−1). To assess stream NO3-N relationships with forest productivity, we used water conductivity to account for dilution resulting from variable discharge. We found that NO3-N concentrations were positively related to the annual growth of the N-fixers on nearby slopes, and were negatively correlated with annual leaf litterfall. Stream NO3-N concentrations were not related to the growth of N-fixers or other tree species in the more removed plateau areas. Using a mass balance, we estimated that symbiotic N fixation can account for 7–29% of NO3 export. Both the growth of adjacent N-fixers and landscape-wide leaf litterfall are important drivers of the inter-annual variability of stream NO3-N concentrations. Our results suggest that predicted changes in precipitation extremes due to climate change will alter N dynamics in tropical forests both directly, by altering discharge and export, and indirectly, by altering N-fixer tree productivity. Climate warming and subsequent drought are predicted to alter local forest production and carbon budgets, the sensitivity of which may be site- and species-specific. Although a warmer and drier climate often constrains tree growth, whether trees grown in cool, wet regions across the Siberian forest can in turn be promoted remains unknown. Here, we aimed to investigate the historical growth tendency of Siberian forests in the Sayan Mountain areas and to explore how climate interacts to regulate their growth. We used ring-width data from Siberian pine (Pinus sibirica Du Tour) sampled from three sites in this area to establish a regional chronology and calculate percentage growth change (%GC) over the past 250 years. Bootstrapped correlation analysis between the regional ring-width chronology and climatic factors indicates the mean air temperature, though not precipitation, is more often positively linked to the radial growth of Siberian pines. The %GC series shows that, from 1966 to 2006, the rising temperatures in May resulted in a significant increase in the radial-growth rate of Siberian pines (r = 0.47, p < 0.05). Our study suggests that the positive growth rate anomaly is more likely to occur as temperatures rise in Southern Siberia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forest productivity projections remain highly uncertain, notably because underpinning physiological controls are delicate to disentangle. Transient perturbation of global climate by large volcanic eruptions provides a unique opportunity to retrospectively isolate underlying processes. Here, we use a multi‐proxy dataset of tree‐ring records distributed over the Northern Hemisphere to investigate the effect of eruptions on tree growth and photosynthesis and evaluate CMIP6 models. Tree‐ring isotope records denoted a widespread 2–4 years increase of photosynthesis following eruptions, likely as a result of diffuse light fertilization. We found evidence that enhanced photosynthesis transiently drove ring width, but the latter further exhibited a decadal anomaly that evidenced independent growth and photosynthesis responses. CMIP6 simulations reproduced overall tree growth decline but did not capture observed photosynthesis anomaly, its decoupling from tree growth or the climate sensitivities of either processes, highlighting key disconnects that deserve further attention to improve forest productivity projections under climate change. Forest water reclamation can improve tree growth and renovate municipal wastewater. Although there are indications that long-term application may exceed forest assimilation capacity, there is limited information on the long-term effects of reclaimed water application on coniferous ecosystems. The purpose of our study was to assess the impacts of prolonged reclaimed water application on forest growth responses and vegetation diversity. We examined the effects of reclaimed water at five water reuse facilities established between 1978 and 2013 in a four-decade time series. We collected tree cores and stem measurements to determine current and retrospective increments. We assessed plant diversity with vegetation surveys. The greatest diameter response observed for reclaimed water amendment compared to controls was 166.1% for western redcedar, while Douglas-fir increased up to 116.4% and ponderosa pine increased up to 100.6%. The minimum response observed was 30.3%. Current annual increments showed that the basal area and volume were significantly greater at long-established facilities for reclaimed-water-amended plots. The understory vegetation diversity declined with application time, while overstory vegetation diversity increased with application time. We conclude that reclaimed water can be a valuable resource to improve forest productivity, but continued application without stocking control may have detrimental effects on forest growth and vegetation diversity. Key message: Removal of logging residue negatively affected tree diameter and height, but had no significant effect on the basal area of the subsequent stand (in the mid-term). On the other hand, different methods of mechanical site preparation (bedding, plowing furrows, and trenching) had no effect on tree growth 1 year after planting, but had a significant effect on tree diameter, tree height, and basal area in the mid-term. Bedding treatments could have a significant positive impact on the productivity of the subsequent Scots pine stands, even when planted on sandy, free-draining soils. Context: Increased use of logging residues in forests may address the growing demand for renewable energy. However, concerns have arisen regarding the depletion of the forest soil, resulting in a decrease in the productivity of the next forest generation. Identifying the drivers of forest growth may be the key to understanding the relationship between logging residue removal and stand productivity. Aims: Quantifying the effect of three mechanical site preparation methods (bedding, plowing furrows, and trenching) combined with five methods of logging residue management (complete removal, comminution, incineration, leaving whole, comminution with, and without mixing with topsoil) on growth of subsequent Scots pine stands, 1 year and 12 years after planting. Methods: The experiment was set up as a randomized complete block design of 45 plots with three replications of combinations of three mechanical site preparation methods and five logging residue treatment methods. Results: The effects of the different methods of mechanical site preparation were not significant 1 year after planting but bedding treatment caused increase in DBH, tree height, and basal area after 12 years. Various methods of logging residue management did not cause any differences in the survival rate nor the basal area of the next-generation stands; however, there was a significant influence on tree sizes. Moreover, the effects changed with time; in plots with a complete removal of logging residues, the trees were the highest 1 year after planting, but after 12 years, their height and DBH were the lowest. Conclusions: It can be concluded that bedding treatments could have a significant positive impact on the productivity of the subsequent Scots pine stands. No effect found of different logging residue treatments on the productivity of Scots pine stands further confirms that the increased removal of biomass from the forest environment does not necessarily result in its rapid degradation. Forest canopy height plays an important role in forest resource management and conservation. The accurate estimation of forest canopy height on a large scale is important for forest carbon stock, biodiversity, and the carbon cycle. With the technological development of satellite-based LiDAR, it is possible to determine forest canopy height over a large area. However, the forest canopy height that is acquired by this technology is influenced by topography and climate, and the canopy height that is acquired in complex subtropical mountainous regions has large errors. In this paper, we propose a method for estimating forest canopy height by combining long-time series Landsat images with GEDI satellite-based LiDAR data, with Fujian, China, as the study area. This approach optimizes the quality of GEDI canopy height data in topographically complex areas by combining stand age and tree height, while retaining the advantage of fast and effective forest canopy height measurements with satellite-based LiDAR. In this study, the growth curves of the main forest types in Fujian were first obtained by using a large amount of forest survey data, and the LandTrendr algorithm was used to obtain the forest age distribution in 2020. The obtained forest age was then combined with the growth curves of each forest type in order to determine the tree height distribution. Finally, the obtained average tree heights were merged with the GEDI_V27 canopy height product in order to create a modified forest canopy height model (MGEDI_V27) with a 30 m spatial resolution. The results showed that the estimated forest canopy height had a mean of 15.04 m, with a standard deviation of 4.98 m. In addition, we evaluated the accuracy of the GEDI_V27 and the MGEDI_V27 using the sample dataset. The MGEDI_V27 had a higher accuracy (R2 = 0.67, RMSE = 2.24 m, MAE = 1.85 m) than the GEDI_V27 (R2 = 0.39, RMSE = 3.35 m, MAE = 2.41 m). R2, RMSE, and MAE were improved by 71.79%, 33.13%, and 22.53%, respectively. We also produced a forest age distribution map of Fujian for the year 2020 and a forest disturbance map of Fujian for the past 32 years. Extreme drought events reduce the productivity of forest ecosystems. One approach for estimating the effects of drought on forests is by assessing their resilience. The objective of this study was to estimate resilience rates at different heights along the tree stem of Pinus durangensis Martínez. The radial growth of 200 cross sections extracted at four heights of tree stems (0.07–0.15, 1.3, 6.3, and 11.0–12.0 m) was analyzed and subsequently transformed into ring-width indices (RWI). These indices were correlated with the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index on a six-month time scale (accumulated drought of six months in the period February–May; SPEI06FM). Seven extreme drought events were identified (1890, 1902, 1956, 1974, 1999, 2006, 2011), and radial growth before, during, and after each event was determined. Based on ring-width index values, resistance, recovery, and resilience indices were calculated. The results indicated a significant correlation (p ≤ 0.05) between annual radial increment and climate indices along the stem (0.56 to 0.80). Climatic sensitivity was higher in the lower part of the stem, with mean sensitivity (MS) and expressed population signal (EPS) values of 0.38 and 0.97, respectively. Resistance index values ranged from 0.44 to 0.76 and were better expressed in higher sections of the stem. Resilience indices changed over time. Regardless of the height of the tree stem, the latest extreme drought events (1999, 2006, and 2011) have led to a lower resilience of trees, indicating that their recovery capacity has decreased. Therefore, forestry practices in the study area may consider managing tree density as a strategy to regulate the stress in competition and to increase the tolerance of trees to drought. Yellowwood or Podocarpus (spp.) holds the esteemed biodiversity status, as key forest species in the mist-belt Afromontane forests of southern Africa. The podocarps are listed as endangered species owing to extensive logging. The forest species support large communities of plants and birds, attributing to the maintenance of biodiversity. Therefore, there is a need to understand the condition of such keystone species if effective and comprehensive biodiversity conservation measures are to be drawn for these dwindling forests. Leaf area index is a crucial eco-physiological parameter applied in the evaluation of the growth and productivity of forest trees, hence it is a suitable proxy for understanding the condition of Yellowwood trees. This study, therefore, sought to estimate the leaf area index of the Yellowwood spp. using Sentinel 2 Multispectral instrument (S2 MSI) data in concert with the Random Forest regression ensemble. Specifically, individual wavebands and vegetation indices were used in developing leaf area index prediction models based on two approaches. The multistage approach, categorised the predictors according to the generalised order of progression, from standard spectral bands to vegetation indices. The second approach involved using a pooled set of predictors, with the backward elimination of poorly performing wavebands and vegetation indices. Results showed that the backward elimination method produced a better model (R2 = 0.59; RMSE = 0.48) when compared to the multistage approach (R2 = 0.50; RMSE = 0.48). The most influential predictor variables in both models were Band 5 and NDVI Red Edge 2. Results of this study underscore the prospects of Sentinel 2 MSI data in characterising the productivity of critical forest species such as the Yellowwoods of the Afromontane forest in southern Africa. The findings of this study are a fundamental step towards understanding forest health and productivity, required in deriving comprehensive monitoring and management strategies in biodiversity conservation. Resource allocation theory posits that increased soil nutrient availability results in decreased plant investment in nutrient acquisition. We evaluated this theory by quantifying fine root biomass and growth in a long term, nitrogen (N) × phosphorus (P) fertilization study in three mature northern hardwood forest stands where aboveground growth increased primarily in response to P addition. We did not detect a decline in fine root biomass or growth in response to either N or P. Instead, fine root growth increased in response to N, by 40% for length (P = 0.04 for the main effect of N in ANOVA), and by 36% for mass, relative to controls. Fine root mass growth was lower in response to N + P addition than predicted from the main effects of N and P (P = 0.01 for the interaction of N × P). The response of root growth to N availability did not result in detectable responses in fine root biomass (P = 0.61), which is consistent with increased root turnover with N addition. We propose that the differential growth response to fertilization between above- and belowground components is a mechanism by which trees enhance P acquisition in response to increasing N availability, illustrating how both elements may co-limit northern hardwood forest production. We consider a nonlinear model describing a forest harvesting of a size-structured trees population with intra-specific competition, where the population compete with trees of bigger size. Using a fixed point argument, we prove the existence of a unique solution to the problem. We also prove the existence of an optimal control where the objective functional includes the benefits from timber production. Forest growth can be examined based on statistical representations from inventories and experiments, with variation parceled among correlated factors. The process-focused approach of production ecology accounts for patterns in growth as a function of resources in the environment, the proportion obtained, the efficiency of using resources to fix carbon, and the allocation of carbon to various components (such as stem growth). The state-of-knowledge from four decades of research and application in production ecology highlights great opportunities for new research and applications, including why growth differs across sites and among trees withing sites, and how growth differs between rotational forest systems and continuous cover systems. Compared with single-species forests, mixed forests tend to provide more forest ecosystem functions and services. However, there is a lack of detailed understanding of the basic mechanisms of the impact of species diversity on tree growth and forest productivity. The main drivers of this relationship are also still under discussion. Here, we synthesized information from 93 studies to quantify the increase in tree size, crown size and stand productivity in mixed stands, and conducted a meta-analysis on the response of tree growth and forest productivity to species mixing. Tree size, crown size and stand productivity increased by 7.4 % (2.4–12.5 %), 12.6 % (5.6–20.1 %), and 33.0 % (18.7–49.0 %), respectively, in mixed stands compared with single-species stands. Our results show that when all observations are included, the mean effect sizes of tree size, crown size, and stand productivity were greater than when only the equal stand density observations were included. Stand age and stand density were the most important moderators affecting tree size in mixed forests. Stand age, shade tolerance and soil acidity were the most important moderators influencing the effect sizes of crown size, and shade tolerance was the most important moderator influencing the effect sizes of stand productivity. We found that these positive mixing effects were also modulated by tree functional traits, stand characteristics, and climatic conditions. For different growth variables, the moderators that affect their growth in the mixed forests were different. Therefore, in the afforestation practices for differing management objectives, foresters should give priority to the factors that have the most important impact on them to achieve their goals. The establishment of mixed-species forests with complex structures and high biodiversity has emerged as a key approach for enhancing productivity and maintaining the stability of plantation forests. However, how the mixing effect changes with stand development and climate variation is still unclear. Additionally, little is known about how the mixing effects vary between even- and uneven-aged mixed planting strategies based on the same species combinations and site conditions. In this study, we used dendrochronological methods to reconstruct 37 years of annual growth series for even-aged mixed plantations (EMs) and uneven-aged mixed plantations (UEMs) of Pinus massoniana and Castanopsis hystrix , as well as their respective monocultures at the individual tree (286 trees in total) level. We found that in EMs, the growth of P. massoniana and C. hystrix was 20.8 % lower and 26.2 % higher than those of their monocultures, respectively. However, the growth of P. massoniana remained unchanged during the first 17 years of mixing, after which it was significantly suppressed by C. hystrix. The growth of P. massoniana and C. hystrix in the UEMs was 20.8 % and 26.2 % lower than that in their monocultures, respectively. Remarkably, the mixing effect on the growth of P. massoniana shifted from suppression to promotion after 30 years of mixing. Furthermore, the relative growth of P. massoniana in the UEMs increased with dry season precipitation. These results indicate that transforming pure plantations into uneven-aged mixed plantations may be a crucial forest management strategy for enhancing tree growth and to improving adaptation to future precipitation pattern changes. While there is consensus that fertilization with nitrogen (N) is a cost-effective way of increasing both forest biomass yield and timber harvest profitability, the strength and longevity of legacy effects are debated. To quantify legacy effects of past fertilization, we analysed 21 mixed Pinus sylvesteris and Picea abies stands. The stands, on average 23 years old at the time of this study, were either unfertilized (n=7), fertilized with 150 kg N ha−1 once 36 years ago (n=7), or twice, 45 and 36 years ago, respectively (n=7), during the previous stand rotation. We performed measurements on soil N mineralisation and N availability, forest growth, ground vegetation community composition, soil and vegetation C/N ratios and soil C and N stocks, many of which responded to legacy N fertilization earlier in stand development. Our results show that the legacy effects of fertilization during the previous stand rotation have diminished through time, indicating an eventual convergence of stand properties. Specifically, all significant effects present in the previous measurement period (over a decade ago), were weaker or completely absent in the current study (i.e. 36 years after fertilization and 23 years after initiation of the new stands). None-the-less, this indicates a longer legacy effect of N fertilization than what is normally considered and suggests that care should be taken to mitigate unwanted, long-term effects when utilizing N addition to promote tree growth in boreal forests. • Legacy effects of N applied during the previous stand rotation were analyzed. • No significant effects were present in soil, vegetation composition or forest growth. • The absence of responses contrasts previous analysis that occurred 10 years ago. • Diminishing effects indicates a convergence of stand properties after ca. 45 years. Global warming has been linked to declines in tree growth. However, it is unclear how the asymmetry in daytime and nighttime warming influences this response. Here, we use 2947 residual tree‐ring width chronologies covering 32 species at 2493 sites, between 1901 and 2018, across the Northern Hemisphere, to analyze the effects of daytime and nighttime temperatures, precipitation, and drought stress on the radial growth of trees. We show that drought stress was primarily triggered by daytime rather than nighttime warming. The radial growth of trees was more sensitive to drought stress in warm regions than in cold regions, especially for angiosperms. Our study provides robust evidence that daytime warming is the primary driver of the observed declines in forest productivity related to drought stress and that daytime and nighttime warming should be considered separately when modelling forest–climate interactions and feedbacks in a future, warmer world. Sustainable forest management requires accurate biometric tools to estimate forest site quality. This is particularly relevant for prescribing adequate silvicultural treatments of forest management planning. The aim of this research was to incorporate topographic and climatic variables into dominant height growth models of patula pine stands to improve the estimation of forest stand productivity. Three generalized algebraic difference approach (GADA) models were fit to a dataset from 66 permanent sampling plots, with six re-measurements and 77 temporary inventory sampling plots established on forest stands of patula pine. The nested iterative approach was used to fit the GADA models, and goodness-of-fit statistics such as the root mean square error, Akaike's Information Criterion, and Bias were used to assess their performance. A Hossfeld IV GADA equation type that includes altitude, slope percentage, mean annual precipitation, and mean annual minimum temperature produced the best fit and estimation. Forest site productivity was negatively affected by altitude, while increasing the mean annual minimum temperature suggested the fastest-growing rates for dominant tree height. Over the coming decades, climate change can decrease forest productivity and stability in many semiarid regions. Tree-ring width (TRW) analysis allows estimation of tree sensitivity to droughts, including resistance (Rt) and resilience (Rc) indexes. It helps to find adaptive potential of individual trees and forest populations. On a forest stand scale, it is affected by habitat conditions and species' ecophysiological characteristics, and on individual scale by tree genotype, age, and size. This study investigated TRW response to droughts in forest-steppe and sub-taiga of southern Siberia for keystone species Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.), and silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.). Chronologies reacted positively to the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) of the previous July–September and current April–July. Depressed tree growth across region and droughts lasting over both intra-seasonal intervals were registered in 1965, 1974, and 1999. TRW-based Rt and Rc for these droughts did not reveal age- or size-related patterns. Higher growth stability indexes were observed for birch in sub-taiga and for conifers in forest-steppe. Larch at all sites had disadvantage against pine for 1965 and 1999 droughts aggravated by pest outbreaks, but adapted better to drought in 1974. European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) is an important component of forests in the alpine and continental biogeographical regions of Croatia. This study aimed to (1) analyze the long-term response of beech to climate, (2) identify potentially critical climatic conditions that could negatively affect the radial increment (RI) and vitality of beech, and (3) evaluate differences in the response of beech between the two biogeographical regions in Croatia. We used the 16 × 16 km Croatian ICP Forests Level 1 network. On a total of 25 plots, we cored between 5 and 24 trees for dendrochronological analysis. Tree-ring widths (TRW) were measured and standardized using cubic spline. TRW chronologies for the two regions were calculated and correlated to the temperature and precipitation data and Standardized Precipitation and Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) using bootstrapped correlations. Continental region precipitation from April to August and alpine region precipitation from June to August were significantly important for RI. Temperature was less important for RI than precipitation in both regions, but the importance of the negative impact of above-average temperatures in the continental region and the positive impact of above-average precipitation in the alpine region has increased over the last two decades. A comparison with the 3-month SPEI confirmed the significant influence of high temperatures and the lack of precipitation in August on the RI of beech trees in both regions.

Lack of tree fecundity data across climatic gradients precludes the analysis of how seed supply contributes to global variation in forest regeneration and biotic interactions responsible for biodiversity. A global synthesis of raw seedproduction data shows a 250‐fold increase in seed abundance from cold‐dry to warm‐wet climates, driven primarily by a 100‐fold increase in seed production for a given tree size. The modest (threefold) increase in forest productivity across the same climate gradient cannot explain the magnitudes of these trends. The increase in seeds per tree can arise from adaptive evolution driven by intense species interactions or from the direct effects of a warm, moist climate on tree fecundity. Experimental evidence of nutrient limitations on primary productivity in Afrotropical forests is rare and globally underrepresented yet are crucial for understanding constraints to terrestrial carbon uptake. In an ecosystem‐scale nutrient manipulation experiment, we assessed the early responses of tree growth rates among different tree sizes, taxonomic species, and at a community level in a humid tropical forest in Uganda. Following a full factorial design, we established 32 (eight treatments × four replicates) experimental plots of 40 × 40 m each. We added nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), their combinations (NP, NK, PK, and NPK), and control at the rates of 125 kg N ha−1 year−1, 50 kg P ha−1 year−1 and 50 kg K ha−1 year−1, split into four equal applications, and measured stem growth of more than 15,000 trees with diameter at breast height (dbh) ≥1 cm. After 2 years, the response of tree stem growth to nutrient additions was dependent on tree sizes, species and leaf habit but not community wide. First, tree stem growth increased under N additions, primarily among medium‐sized trees (10–30 cm dbh), and in trees of Lasiodiscus mildbraedii in the second year of the experiment. Second, K limitation was evident in semi‐deciduous trees, which increased stem growth by 46% in +K than –K treatments, following a strong, prolonged dry season during the first year of the experiment. This highlights the key role of K in stomatal regulation and maintenance of water balance in trees, particularly under water‐stressed conditions. Third, the role of P in promoting tree growth and carbon accumulation rates in this forest on highly weathered soils was rather not pronounced; nonetheless, mortality among saplings (1–5 cm dbh) was reduced by 30% in +P than in –P treatments. Although stem growth responses to nutrient interaction effects were positive or negative (likely depending on nutrient combinations and climate variability), our results underscore the fact that, in a highly diverse forest ecosystem, multiple nutrients and not one single nutrient regulate tree growth and aboveground carbon uptake due to varying nutrient requirements and acquisition strategies of different tree sizes, species, and leaf habits. Structure-based forest management (SBFM) is a method for improving forest structure and quality based on nearest-neighbor analysis. Stand spatial structure directly affects the health and stability of forest ecosystems. Research on the effects of SBFM on the distribution of spatial structure parameters is needed to provide a scientific basis for further development and implementation of SBFM technology in forestry. The present study was conducted on six permanent plots (20 m × 20 m) established within a Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco plantation in Beijing, China. Changes in stand spatial structure parameters (SSSPs) were evaluated in managed and control plots at three time points: before SBFM and after 2 and 7 years of SBFM. The results showed that SBFM gradually accelerated the development of the P. orientalis plantation toward a random distribution pattern, reaching a significant difference within 2 years. SBFM promoted the growth of medium and dominant trees, with a significant difference between SBFM and control stands after 7 years. It led to a slight increase in mingling compared to the control, although no significant differences were observed between treatments. SBFM generally decreased the proportions of disadvantageous microstructures (disadvantaged trees with non-randomly distributed, disadvantaged trees with a low degree of mingling, and non-randomly distributed trees with a low degree of mingling). It also improved the ratio of torch (R2) units to dumbbell (R1) units, gradually improving the stability of the plantation forest. The results of this study suggest that SBFM optimized the spatial structure of a P. orientalis plantation in Beijing, China, and was conducive to tree growth and forest stand productivity. The mechanistic pathways connecting ocean-atmosphere variability and terrestrial productivity are well-established theoretically, but remain challenging to quantify empirically. Such quantification will greatly improve the assessment and prediction of changes in terrestrial carbon sequestration in response to dynamically induced climatic extremes. The jet stream latitude (JSL) over the North Atlantic-European domain provides a synthetic and robust physical framework that integrates climate variability not accounted for by atmospheric circulation patterns alone. Surface climate impacts of north-south summer JSL displacements are not uniform across Europe, but rather create a northwestern-southeastern dipole in forest productivity and radial-growth anomalies. Summer JSL variability over the eastern North Atlantic-European domain (5-40E) exerts the strongest impact on European beech, inducing anomalies of up to 30% in modelled gross primary productivity and 50% in radial tree growth. The net effects of JSL movements on terrestrial carbon fluxes depend on forest density, carbon stocks, and productivity imbalances across biogeographic regions. Here the authors show that extremes in the summer jet stream position over Europe create a beech forest productivity dipole between northwestern and southeastern Europe and can result in regional anomalies in forest carbon uptake and growth.
