Abstract

The article discusses the revisions in the standards of diabetes management reviewed by the American Association of Diabetes Educators and the American Diabetes Association. The objective of the name change is to emphasize the support for people with diabetes and those who are at risk, and to inspire behavior change, maintenance of a healthy lifestyle, and to address psychosocial concerns. An overview of the 10 standards is also presented.

Abstract

The article focuses on the application of the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education to diabetes self-management education (DSME) and diabetes self-management support (DSMS) in the U.S. The standards are reviewed by a Task Force convened by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in 2011. The standards cover the definitions of DSME and DSMS, the role of each stakeholders, curriculum and implementation.
