Australia looks to be one of those lucky countries that adopted an early public health response limiting community transmission of COVID-19 and avoiding the levels of acute hospitalization and fatality seen in other settings. Yet the pandemic came on the back of the largest bushfire season the country had seen which itself followed a sequence of climatic disasters involving drought, cyclones and floods. The social and economic impact of the COVID-19 response has been substantial with widespread loss of employment, social dislocation and health fears sparked across the nation. Findings from risk modeling and population surveillance provide preliminary evidence of increased burden of psychological distress, morbidity and risk of suicide resulting from the current crisis. We also highlight the mental health risk that may arise from increased sedentary behavior with the introduction of lockdown and physical distancing measures. We also outline the potently valuable role of drawing on salutogenic models including resilience and post traumatic growth research for individual and broader community level need. This paper examines the expression of emotion in narrative speech among individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI). We are particularly interested in the effects of ABI on the use of metaphor (c.f. Stroinska et al., 2014). Conceptualizing traumatic events and sharing them with others is crucial for prognostic purposes and reflected in the speech patterns of those who experience some level of post-traumatic growth (PTG). Emotion and metaphor constitute a relatively unexplored domain within the ABI community and merit further research given the prevalence of emotional disturbances following a brain injury. This study explores emotional valence (i.e. the ‘pleasantness’ of the emotions invoked) and concreteness (i.e. how perceptible the referent of the word is) in metaphorical constructions. Emotional norm data was analysed using a corpus of approximately 14,000 commonly used English words ranking valence and arousal (Warriner et al., 2013; Kuperman et al., 2014). Thirteen semi-structured interviews with ABI survivors were conducted at a rehabilitation facility eliciting narrative recall of traumatic events and their experience across three temporal representations, namely past, present, and future. Results highlight importance of demographic information in recovery outcomes, which in our study accounts for 32% of the variance in emotion. Measures of valence revealed significantly increased use of positive metaphor over time, while the analysis of concreteness indicated events further in time represented more abstractly. Together, the findings shed some new light on emotional outcomes following ABI and indicate possible uses that figurative language may provide in understanding PTG. Humans rely on metaphorical language to capture the essence of our experiences in meaningful and relatable ways. This is particularly true of those who have experienced a traumatic event, such as an acquired brain injury (ABI). Conveying feelings associated with trauma can often be challenging for individuals since the way they interact and perceive the world changes as a result. The shifting perspective is often described using metaphor to organize thoughts and give meaning to trauma. The current study examines the role of metaphor as a tool to uncover emotion following ABI and explore the implications it has in understanding psychological growth following the event. By exploring how abstract and emotional metaphors were, our results revealed that participants in the study had more positive elements in their metaphor use when describing their life over time and imagining the future.

Bu çalışma, cerrahi operasyon geçirmiş meme kanseri hastalarında travma sonrası gelişimi yordayan faktörlerin ve Öz Benlik-Değerlendirmeleri Ölçeğinin psikometrik özelliklerinin incelenmesi amacıyla, 66 meme kanseri hastasından oluşan bir örneklemle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Katılımcılara toplam 7 adet ölçek uygulanmıştır. Değişkenler arasındaki ilişkileri değerlendirmek amacıyla korelasyon ve regresyon analizleri yapılmıştır. Yapılan analizlerin sonuçlarına göre, hastalığın evresi, toplam travma sonrası gelişim düzeyini ve kişiler arası ilişkilerdeki değişim alt boyutunu anlamlı düzeyde yordamıştır. Tanı aşamasında daha düşük evreye sahip olanlar daha fazla toplam travma sonrası gelişim ve daha fazla kişiler arası ilişkilerde değişim göstermişlerdir. Hastalığın evresi kontrol edildikten sonra, sosyal destek ile toplam travma sonrası gelişim ve kişiler arası ilişkilerdeki değişim ilişkili bulunmuştur. Sosyal desteği daha yüksek olan meme kanseri hastaları daha fazla toplam travma sonrası gelişim ve kişiler arası ilişkilerde değişim göstermiştir. Baş etme yollarından kendine güvenli yaklaşım kullanımının artması hayat felsefesindeki değişimde artışla ilişkili bulunmuştur. Ruminasyon ve öz benlik-değerlendirmeleri ile travma sonrası gelişim arasında ilişki bulunamamıştır. Öz benlik- Değerlendirmeleri Ölçeğinin sağlık alanında kullanılabilmesi için yeterli psikometrik özelliklere sahip olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Araştırmanın sonuçları, ilgili literatür çerçevesinde tartışılmıştır.Anahtar Sözcükler: Travma Sonrası Gelişim, Sosyal Destek, Baş Etme Yolları, Ruminasyon, Öz Benlik-Değerlendirmeleri, Meme Kanseri The aim of the present study is to investigate the predictors of post traumatic growth and psychometric properties of Core Self Evaluations Scale among post-operative breast cancer patients. 7 scale were administered to 66 participants. Correlation and regression analyses were conducted in order to examine relationships between variables. According to results, the stage of cancer significantly predicted post traumatic growth and growth in relationships with others. At the time of diagnosis, those who have lower cancer stage showed more post traumatic growth and growth in relationships with others. After controlling stage of cancer, social support was found to be related to post traumatic growth and growth in relationship with others. Patients with higher social support, tended to report more post traumatic growth. Increase in applying self confidence approach as a coping strategy was found to be related to increase in growth in philosophy of life. Rumination and core self evaluations were not significantly related to post traumatic growth. Tese de doutoramento em Psicologia (área de conhecimento em Psicologia Clínica), As experiências traumáticas desintegram os esquemas cognitivo-emocionais e as estruturas de significado utilizadas pelos indivíduos na relação com o eu, o mundo e os outros, tornando a reconstrução dos significados das memórias autobiográficas traumáticas psicologicamente vital (Janoff- Bulman, 2006). O confronto com as memórias autobiográficas traumáticas pode levar os indivíduos a reescreverem as suas estórias de vida com ou sem “argumentos” psicopatológicos. A análise qualitativa das modalidades de atribuição de significado às memórias traumáticas torna-se fundamental quer para aprofundar a compreensão das perturbações psicopatológicas, nomeadamente, a PSPT, quer para clarificar as percepções de crescimento pessoal desenvolvidas por muitos sujeitos após o confronto com as memórias autobiográficas da tragédia (Calhoun & Tedeschi, 1995/2004). Com este estudo pretendemos conhecer, compreender e comparar as organizações de significado construídas pelos ex-combatentes com e sem PSPT para as suas histórias de vida nos períodos pré, péri e pós militares. Participaram nesta investigação 26 sujeitos do sexo masculino, ex-combatentes da Guerra Colonial Portuguesa durante o período compreendido entre 1963 e 1974, sendo que 15 apresentavam critérios suficientes para que lhes fosse atribuído o diagnóstico de PPST de, acordo com os critérios do DSM-IV-TR (APA, 2002), e 11 eram assintomáticos. A idade dos participantes variou entre os 54 e os 67 anos (M=60; dp=4,1). Os sujeitos estiveram mobilizados em combate na Guiné, Angola e Moçambique entre 1963 e 1974, por períodos variáveis entre os 24 e os 48 meses (M= 32,6, dp=7,3). Os participantes responderam aos instrumentos Questionário Sócio-Demográfico (Maia, McIntyre, Pereira & Fernandes, 2004), Questionário da História Militar (Maia, McIntyre, Pereira & Fernandes, 2004). e Escala de Avaliação da Resposta ao Acontecimento Traumático - E.A.R.A.T. (McIntyre, 1993; McIntyre & Ventura, 1996) e foram entrevistados de modo semiestruturado com base no guião Entrevista Auto-biográfica (Sendas & Maia, 2005). Os resultados dos instrumentos relativos à sintomatologia pós exposição traumática permitiram a constituição de dois grupos contrastantes com base nos quais se realizou a grounded analysis das transcrições integrais das entrevistas autobiográficas, com recurso ao software ATLASti.5.2, de acordo com as modalidades de codificação aberta, axial e selectiva (Glaser & Strauss, 1967). Os resultados da grounded analysis das 26 entrevistas transcritas (15 de participantes com PPST e 11 de participantes assintomáticos) fizeram emergir teorias distintas para cada grupo, em cada período da história de vida considerada. Tendo em conta a comparação grupo PPST versus Assintomático, as estórias emergentes foram, Sofrer para (sobre)Viver versus Cuidado Austero (referente ao período pré militar), Operar em Modo Besta-Guerreiro versus De Militar a Guerreiro (período périmilitar) e Mudar para (Des)Integrar versus Mudar para (re) Integrar (período pós militar). Foi-nos possível concluir a existência de especificidade e continuidade nas diferentes estórias referentes aos diferentes períodos de vida dos participantes. As estórias dos participantes com PPST fizeram emergir a Guerra como fronteira, marco inquestionável que aprisionou qualquer possibilidade de ponte com a identidade percebida antes e após a Guerra ao ponto de ser, essa mesma Guerra, quem dá sentido à existência destes homens. Pelo contrário, as estórias dos sujeitos assintomáticos sugerem uma temática de permanente proactividade independentemente do capítulo que consideremos, bem como a capacidade de amadurecer e dar continuidade à vida antes e após a Guerra. Concluindo, fica-nos a percepção de continuidade nas estórias de ambos os grupos, dado que os participantes assintomáticos parecem permanentemente ocupados em processos “delicados” de construção de significados provisórios para as memórias autobiográficas bélicas e envolvidos em relações mais ou menos adaptativas com as mesmas o que, em coerência com a linha de pensamento da abordagem bio-psico-social evolutiva do trauma (Christopher, 2004), nos fez perceber que, após a vivência de um acontecimento potencialmente traumático, combinações diferentes de factores intrapsíquicos, e sócio afectivos podem, em qualquer momento fazer oscilar o equilíbrio psicoafectivo dos sujeitos entre a patologia, a resiliência e o crescimento pós-traumático (Calhoun & Tedeschi, (2004), The traumatic experiences disintegrate the cognitive-emotional schemes and the structures of significance used by individuals regarding their relation with their self, the world and others, making the reconstruction of the meanings of the autobiographical traumatic memories psychologically vital. (Janoff-Bulman, 2006). The confrontation with the autobiographical memories may lead individuals to rewrite their life stories with or without psychopathological “points of view”. The qualitative analysis of the modes of giving a meaning to the traumatic stories becomes crucial whether to intensify the understanding of the psychopathological disturbances, namely PTSD, or to clarify the understanding of personal growth developed by many subjects after confronting with the autobiographical tragic memoires (Calhoun and Tedeschi, 1995/2004). With this study we intend to acknowledge, understand and compare the organization of meaning made up by the former veterans with and without PTSD for their life stories in the pre, peri and post military periods. 26 male subjects took part in this survey; all were war veterans of the Portuguese Colonial War during the period of 1963 to 1974. 15 of these individuals showed enough criteria to be diagnosed PTSD, according to the DSM-IV-TR criteria (APA, 2002), and 11 showed no symptoms. The participants’ ages varied between 54 and 67 years old (M=60; dp=4,1). The subjects were positioned in war scenarios in Guinea, Angola and Mozambique between 1963 and 1974, for variable periods from 24 to 48 months (M= 32,6, dp=7,3). The participants have answered the social demographical questionnaire (Maia, McIntyre, Pereira & Fernandes, 2004), the Military History Questionnaire (Maia, McIntyre, Pereira & Fernandes, 2004) and the Scale for Assessing the Response to the Traumatic Event - E.A.R.A.T. (McIntyre, 1993; McIntyre & Ventura, 1996) and were interviewed in a semi structured manner, based on the Autobiographical Interview Script (Sendas & Maia, 2005). The results of the tools referring to the symptoms of post traumatic exposure have allowed two contrasting groups to be formed, on which the grounded theory of the integral transcriptions of the autobiographical interviews was based, using the ATLASti.5.2 software, in accordance to the modes of open, axial and selective codification (Glaser & Strauss, 1967). The results of the grounded analysis for the 26 transcribed interviews (15 of PPST subjects and 11 asymptomatic subjects) have made different theories for each group emerge; for any period in the considered life story. Considering the comparison PPST group versus Asymptomatic group, the emerging stories were Suffer to Survive versus Strict Care Giving (regarding the pre-military period), Functioning on Warrior Beast Mode versus from Military to Warrior (perimilitary period) and Change to (Des)Integrate versus Change to (Re) Integrate (post military period). We were able to conclude that there is a specificity and continuity in the different stories, regarding the different life periods of the participants. The stories of the PPST participants have made War emerge as a frontier, an unquestionable milestone that has entrapped any possibility of bridging with their perceived identity before and after the war, to the point that that same War was what gave meaning to these men’s existence. On the contrary, the asymptomatic subjects’ stories suggest a thematic of permanent pro-activity regardless of the chapter we consider, as well as the ability to grow and continue life before and after the War. In conclusion, we understand that the continuity in the stories of both groups, given that the asymptomatic subjects seem permanently busy in delicate “processes” of construction of provisory meanings for their belic autobiographical memoires, and involved in more or less adaptive relations with them, which, in coherence with the line of thought of the bio psycho social approach evolutionary approach to trauma (Christopher, 2004), has helped us understand that, after experiencing a potentially traumatic event, the different combinations of intra psychic and socio affective factors may, at any time, make the psycho affective balance of the subjects between pathology, resilience, and post traumatic growth (Calhoun & Tedeschi, (2004)., Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - SFRH/BD/21990/2005

Bu çalısmada Marmara depremini yasayan yetiskinlerin algıladıkları sosyal destek düzeyleri ile travma sonrası gelisim ve depresyon düzeyleri arasındaki iliskinin bazı değiskenlere göre farklılasıp farklılasmadığı incelenmeye çalısılmıstır. Bu değiskenleri; cinsiyet, yas, eğitim durumu, meslek, medeni durum, yerlesim yeri, deprem sırasında bulunulan bölge, deprem sırasında bulunulan yer, sarsıntıyı hissetme, deprem sırasında bulunulan binada çökme, enkaz altında, ailede can kaybı, akrabalarda can kaybı, mal kaybı, kurtarma çalısmalarına katılma, evin su andaki durumu ve su anda kalınan yer olusturmaktadır. Uygulama Yalova bölgesinde ikamet eden, 1999 Marmara depreminde bulundukları binanın çökmesi, enkaz altında kalma, yakın kaybı yasama, mal kaybı yasama gibi travmatik süreçlerden birini yada birkaçını yasamıs olan 190 depremzede üzerinde uygulanmıstır. Arastırma da Depremzede Kisisel Bilgi Formu, Travma Sonrası Gelisim Ölçeği (PTG), Beck Depresyon Ölçeği (BECK), Sosyal Destek Formu uygulanmıstır. Uygulamadan elde edilen bulgulara, arastırma amaçları doğrultusunda SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) programı uygulanmıs ve genel olarak su sonuçlara ulasılmıstır. Arastırmanın sonuçlarına göre, kadınların travma sonrası olumlu gelisim düzeylerinin erkeklere göre daha yüksek olduğu saptanmıstır. Eğitim durumu ile travma sonrası olumlu gelisim düzeyi arasında anlamlı bir fark bulunmamıstır. Medeni durum ile travma sonrası olumlu gelisim düzeyi karsılastırıldığında aralarında anlamlı bir farklılık saptanmamıstır. Deprem sırasında bulunulan yerle travma sonrası olumlu gelisim düzeyi arasında anlamlı bir farklılık görülmemistir. Binada çökme durumu ve enkaz altında kalma durumu ile travma sonrası olumlu gelisim düzeyi arasında anlamlı bir farklılık saptanmıstır. Binada çökme yasamıs ve enkaz altında kalmıs depremzedelerin travma sonrası olumlu gelisim düzeyleri bu durumları yasamamıs kisilere göre daha düsüktür. Aile bireylerinde can kaybı yasama ve ciddi miktarda mal kaybı yasama ile travma sonrası olumlu gelisim düzeyi arasında anlamlı bir farklılık olduğu ortaya çıkmıstır.Kurtarma çalısmalarına katılma ile travma sonrası olumlu gelisim düzeyi arasında anlamlı bir fark olmadığı saptanmıstır. Sosyal destek düzeyinin azaldıkça travma sonrası olumlu gelisim puanının azaldığı ve depresyon düzeyinin arttığı saptanmıstır. Cinsiyet kavramı ve eğitim durumu ile sosyal destek düzeyi arasında anlamlı bir farklılığın olmadığı saptanmıstır Ailede olusan can kaybı ile sosyal destek düzeyi arasında anlamlı bir farklılık bulunmustur. Su anda kalınan yerle depresyon düzeyi arasında anlamlı bir farklılık olmadığı ortaya çıkmıstır., This research aims to study the relationship of the perceived social support level of the people who experienced Marmara earthquake to the posttraumatic development and depression by inquiring the variances according to some variables. Gender, age, educational status, profession, marital status, location, region during the earthquake, location during the earthquake, feeling the quake, collapse of the building during the quake, remaining under the debris, casualties in family, casualties in relatives, property loss, joining rescue works, house’s status and the home location forms these variables. This study is carried out with 190 victims who are living in Yalova and experienced Marmara earthquake and some traumatic processes like collapse of the building, remaining under the debris, loss of some relatives, property loss. Personal Information Form of Earthquake Victim, Development Scale of Post trauma, Beck’s Depression Scale and Social Support Form are applied in the sudy. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) has been applied to the findings reached by application in accordance with the aim of research. Generally we reached the following results. According to the research results, it is confirmed that the positive development level after the trauma of the women is higher than men. There isn’t any significant difference between educational status and the positive development level after the trauma. There isn’t any significant difference between marital status and the positive development level after the trauma when we compare them. There isn’t any significant difference between the location during earthquake and the positive development level after the trauma. A significant difference was found between the collapse of the building, remaining under debris and the positive development level after the trauma. The positive development level after the trauma of the victims who experienced the earthquake is lower than the ones who never experienced it. A significant difference has been found between the positive development level after the trauma and experiencing loss of life and property. There isn’t any significant difference between joining search-rescue activities and the positive development level after the trauma. It is stated that as the social support level decreases, the depression level increases and the positive development level point after the trauma decreases. There isn’t any significant difference between gender concept, education level and social support level. A significant difference has been found between the loss of life in the family and social support level. There isn’t any significant difference between gender, education level and depression level. A significant difference has been found between the collapse of the building, remaining under debris, loss of life in the family, loss of property in large quantities and the depression level. There isn’t any significant difference between joining search-rescue activities and depression level. A significant difference has been found between the current status of the houses and the depression level. There isn’t any significant difference between the current residential area and the depression level.
