This paper describes an improved noise modeling approach for the agent-based transport simulation MATSim. In contrast to previous versions, the new implementation takes into account the shielding of noise at building facades. The simplified approach is based on German noise modeling guidelines. As a proof of concept, a comparative calculation of noise immissions for a use case in the city of Munich with and without the consideration of buildings reveals more realistic immission values when shielding is taken into account. While uncovered areas are not affected by the updated calculation, backyards and areas behind larger building blocks show a major reduction in immissions. When looking at noise exposure costs in a dense area, ignoring the effect of shielding seems to significantly overestimate costs by up to 20%. Investments for improving long-distance travel infrastructure are substantial and may have significant impacts on travel demand, the environment, and the economy, and therefore, deserve careful analysis before implementation. A new nested multinomial logit mode choice model is presented that is sensitive to travel costs, distance, transit station accessibility, service frequency, number of transfers, and parking costs. On the auto side, the model considers the modes drive-alone and shared-ride with 2-4 or more passengers. The transit side models regional bus, rail, and air as modal options. Special attention was given to transit station choice, as the nearest station may not provide the best connectivity for a given trip. Parameters used in this model were carefully compared with those published in the literature to ensure reasonability of model results. Research on the interaction amongst land use, transport, and the environment has a long history and can fill volumes of publications. Such research has contributed to urban and transportation planning and substantially reduced problems in transport, land use, and the environment. However, solving traditional problems caused by the spatial disorder of land use and transportation facilities still remains an elusive goal. For instance, we can easily find that severe traffic jams and high car dependencies cause various problems in many developed cities, while extensive suburbanization driven by high mobility has led to increased energy consumption and environmental impact. Similar problems have emerged in developing countries with a greater magnitude than in developed nations. Additionally, new problems related to sustainability, including social exclusion and climate change, are in effect around the world. The progress and emergence of new technologies in transportation, the potential of travel behavior monitoring, and the sensing of the earth surface are motivating the expansion of research topics and methodologies. The World Conference on Transport Research Society (WCTRS) is one of the oldest research communities studying land use/transport interactions. This virtual special issue consists of selected and fully reviewed papers presented at the 2016 World Conference on Transport Research (WCTR) in Shanghai.
