The subassembly procedure and relevant tools for the complete 40^\circ sector assembly as a foundation of the ITER machine have been developed to meet technical and functional requirements for years. Based on the concept of subassembly procedure and tools provided by ITER Organization, detailed procedure and relevant purpose-built assembly tools are developed by Korea Domestic Agency. The tools described in this paper contain an upending tool, a lifting tool, a sector subassembly tool, and a radial beam and vacuum vessel supports with alignment units. To verify the 6-degree-of-freedom system for fine alignment of components in the sector subassembly tool, scale-down mock-up has been manufactured and tested. This paper presents the overall 40^\circ sector subassembly procedure, the fundamental specifications of the relevant assembly tools, and the current status of the mock-up developments. Abstract: The conceptual design of the purpose-built assembly tools required for ITER tokamak assembly is given. The ITER machine assembly is sub-divided into five major activities: lower cryostat, sector sub-assembly, sector assembly, ex-vessel, and in-vessel . The core components, vacuum vessel (VV) and toroidal field coil (TFC), are assembled from nine 40° sub-assemblies, each comprising a 40° VV sector, two TFCs, and the associated VV thermal shield (VVTS). The lower cryostat activities must be completed prior to sector assembly in pit to prepare the foundations for the core components, and to locate the lower components to be trapped once the core components installation begins. In-vessel and ex-vessel activities follow completion of sector assembly. To perform these assembly activities requires both massive, purpose-built tools, and standard heavy handling and support tools. The tools have the capability of supporting and adjusting the largest of the ITER components; with maximum linear dimension 19m and mass 1200tonne, with a precision in the low mm range. Conceptual designs for these tools have been elaborated with the collaboration of the Korean Domestic Agency (KO DA). The structural analysis was performed as well using ANSYS code. A pre-conceptual design study has been carried out for the Korean fusion demonstration reactor (K-DEMO) tokamak featured by high magnetic field ( B T0 = 7.4 T), R = 6.8 m, a = 2.1 m, and a steady-state operation. The design concepts of the K-DEMO blanket system considering the cooling in-vessel components with pressurized water and a solid pebble breeder are described herein. The structure of the K-DEMO blanket is toroidally subdivided into 16 inboard and 32 outboard sectors, in order to allow the vertical maintenance. Each blanket module is composed of plasma-facing first wall, layers of breeding parts, shielding and manifolds. A ceramic breeder using Li 4 SiO 4 pebbles with Be 12 Ti as neuron multiplier is employed for study. MCNP neutronic simulations and thermo-hydraulic analyses are interactively performed in order to satisfy two key aspects: achieving a global Tritium Breeding Ratio (TBR) >1.05 and operating within the maximum allowable temperature ranges of materials. Abstract: The purpose-built, ITER tokamak assembly tools, which are to be provided by Korea, should be designed to meet: the assembly plan, space reservations, safety standards, simple operations, efficient maintenance, and so on. It is very important that the ITER assembly tools are able to lift and transfer ITER components or their sub-assemblies to their assembled position safely. Furthermore, the lifting tools will lift and handle very heavy loads that can be more than 1200 tonnes sometimes. Therefore, the ITER lifting tools must be designed to endure these heavy load conditions with regard to their structural integrity. Also, these designs should be verified through an appropriate method. The preliminary design of the sector lifting tool and associated lifting attachments are introduced in this paper. The sector lifting tool was designed especially to lift and handle various ITER components by adjusting the lifting centre. The structural analysis results using ANSYS are described considering the heaviest load condition. The results of the analysis show that; all stresses applied on the lifting tool are lower than the allowable stress of the applied material. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The Korean fusion demonstration reactor (K-DEMO) has completed a two year study looking at key Tokamak components and configuration options in preparation of a conceptual design phase. A key part of a device configuration centers on defining an arrangement that enhances the ability to reach high availability values by defining design solutions that foster simplified maintenance operations. To maximize the size and minimize the number of in-vessel components enlarged TF coils were defined that incorporate a pair of windings within each coil to mitigate pressure drop issues and to reduce the cost of the coils. A semi-permanent shield structure was defined to develop labyrinth interfaces between double-null plasma contoured shield modules, provide an entity to align blanket components and provide support against disruption loads—with a load path that equilibrates blanket, TF and PF loads through a base structure. Blanket piping services and auxiliary systems that interface with in-vessel components have played a major role in defining the overall device arrangement—concept details will be presented along with general arrangement features and preliminary results obtained from disruption analysis. Abstract: ITER tokamak assembly is mainly composed of lower cryostat activities, sector sub-assembly, sector assembly, in-vessel activities and ex-vessel activities. The main tools for sector sub-assembly procedures consists of upending tool, sector lifting tool, vacuum vessel support and bracing tool and sector sub-assembly tool. Conceptual design of assembly tools for sector sub-assembly procedures is described herein. The basic structure for upending tool has been developed under the assumption that upending is performed with crane which will be installed in Tokamak building. Sector lifting tool is designed to adjust the position of a sector to minimize the difference between the center of the tokamak building crane and the center of gravity of the sector. Sector sub-assembly tool is composed of special frame for the fine adjustment of position control with 6 degrees of freedom. The design of VV support and bracing tool for four kinds of VV 40° sectors has been developed. Also, structural analysis for upending tool, sector sub-assembly tool has been studied using ANSYS for the situation of an applied load with the same dead weight multiplied by 3/4.
