The modified N50 (N50H) cable-in-conduit conductor CICC jacket developed by China will be applied in China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR). Building upon the N50H material, China has developed a corresponding welding material and conducted R&D work on N50H jacket welding. We simulated the N50H jacket welded joint to replicate the entire process of CICC preparation, which includes extrusion, bending, straightening and aging. The magnetic properties of welded joints were evaluated at various temperatures using a physical property measurement system. In addition, the microstructure of the welded joint was studied by various microscopic analysis techniques, and the welded joint showed a stable austenitic structure. Furthermore, mechanical properties of the welded joints were investigated at different temperatures with particular emphasis on their behavior at 4.2 K. The circle-in-square ReBCO conductor jackets welding joint showed a yield strength greater than 1500 MPa, a fracture toughness KIC better than 260 MPa m1/2 and the elongation at break is more than 30 % at 4.2 K. However, a decrease in strength, ductility, and fracture toughness is observed within the welded joints of Nb3Sn conductor jackets after undergoing an aging process. This study will present experimental data on welding joints and discuss the feasibility of N50H as a high-magnetic field jacket material for next-generation fusion reactors.

For the construction of ecofriendly ships, fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), ammonia, and hydrogen are being discussed as alternatives. LNG fuel has recently been applied to shipbuilding. The most important aspect of an LNG propulsion ship is the LNG storage tank, because LNG is stored at a high pressure and low temperature. Cryogenic steels are needed to evaluate safety in weld joints, especially the LNG storage tank which has a dissimilar weld joint with a STS pipe. The dissimilar weld joint has a complex welding residual stress distribution. It is necessary to evaluate the effects of temperature changes that occur during the loading–unloading process of LNG. In this study, the residual stress distribution characteristics of heterogeneous welding parts welded to STS pipes using 9% Ni steel, STS, and high-manganese austenitic steel in an LNG storage tank were investigated through experimental and analytical methods. The thermal stress due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficient between cryogenic steel and the STS pipe occurred with a small amount in loading–unloading of LNG. When high-manganese austenitic steels and the STS pipe were joined, tensile stress was generated at the dissimilar weld joint owing to the temperature difference generated during the LNG loading–unloading process. STS has a homogenous weld joint and identical thermal expansion coefficients; therefore, the shrinkage and expansion were not affected by the temperature change. The welding residual stress at the dissimilar weld joints was measured via an experimental cutting method, and the results indicated that the tensile residual stress had distribution similar to the yield stress of the material. The stress generated by the temperature change and the welding residual stress overlapped and occurred during the loading–unloading process of the LNG tank; however, the final tensile stress below the tensile stress was distributed in the storage tank.

High-manganese austenitic steel was developed to improve the fracture toughness and safety of steel under cryogenic temperatures, and its austenite structure was formed by increasing the Mn content. The developed high-manganese austenitic steel was alloyed with austenite-stabilizing elements (e.g., C, Mn, and Ni) to increase cryogenic toughness. It was demonstrated that 30 mm thickness high-manganese austenitic steel, as well as joints welded with this steel, had a sufficiently higher fracture toughness than the required toughness values evaluated under the postulated stress conditions. High-manganese austenitic steel can be applied to large offshore and onshore LNG storage and fuel tanks located in areas experiencing cryogenic conditions. Generally, fracture toughness decreases at lower temperatures; therefore, cryogenic steel requires high fracture toughness to prevent unstable fractures. Brittle fracture initiation and arrest tests were performed using 30 mm thickness high-manganese austenitic steel and SAW joints. The ductile fracture resistance of the weld joints (weld metal, fusion line, fusion line + 2 mm) was investigated using the R-curve because a crack in the weld joint tends to deviate into the weld metal in the case of undermatched joints. The developed high-manganese austenitic steel showed little possibility of brittle fracture and a remarkably unstable ductile fracture toughness.

9%Ni steel was recently used for the first time in the field of injection unit (IU) for the injection of CO2 into oil wells. Because such steels are operated in H2S medium and are susceptible to sulfide stress cracking, their pipes are cladded with Ni-based superalloy 625 by using gas tungsten arc welding with a hot wire to prevent this phenomenon from occurring. The transition zone of substrate/clad can have high hardness and low toughness, and promote failure of the component during service; therefore, it is very important to know its characteristics. In this work, this transition zone was analyzed through optical and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry and electron backscatter diffraction, as well as Vickers microhardness, shear and bend tests. Metallographic analysis identified type I and II boundaries with distinct chemical gradients, MC-type carbides, Laves/γ eutectics, peninsulas macrosegregation, crystallographic texture close to in the clads, residual strain, and drop of microhardness across the transition zone. The clads were approved in the shear and bend tests. This work proposes a new type II boundary formation mechanism in dissimilar welds of steels that do not exhibit the allotropic transformation δ → γ during the welding thermal cycle and do not experience a change in the solidification mode.
