The main aim of this paper is to study the oscillatory behaviors of gene expression networks in quorum-sensing system with time delay. The stability of the unique positive equilibrium and the existence of Hopf bifurcation are investigated by choosing the time delay as the bifurcation parameter and by applying the bifurcation theory. The explicit criteria determining the direction of Hopf bifurcation and the stability of bifurcating periodic solutions are developed based on the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem. Numerical simulations demonstrate good agreements with the theoretical results. Results of this paper indicate that the time delay plays a crucial role in the regulation of the dynamic behaviors of quorum-sensing system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study develops an integrated model of the p53–Mdm2 interaction composed of five basic components and time delay in the DNA damage response based on the existing research work. Some critical factors, including time delay, system parameters, and their interactions in the p53–Mdm2 system are investigated to examine their effects on the oscillatory behaviour induced by Hopf bifurcation. It is shown that the positive feedback formed between p53 and the activity of Mdm2 in the cytoplasm can cause a slight decrease in the amplitude of the p53 oscillation. The length of the time delay plays an important role in determining the amplitude and period of the oscillation and can significantly extend the parameter range for the system to demonstrate oscillatory behaviour. The numerical simulation results are found to be in good agreement with the published experimental observation. It is expected that the results of this research would be helpful to better understand the biological functions of p53 pathway and provide some clues in the treatment of cancer. • Comparative analysis on a three-disk dynamo system with and without time delay are performed. • Regarding the local Hopf bifurcation, three different unfolding structures of delay-induced double Hopf bifurcations are presented. • For the global transitions and phenomena, the coexistence of periodic or quasi-periodic attractors and chaotic motion are observed. The disk dynamo plays an important role in studying the geodynamo and much research works have been devoted to the understanding of dynamo dynamics. This paper further investigates an extended disk dynamo system having three coupled conducting disks and incorporates the interaction-induced time delay in the dynamic governing equations. By carrying out a comparative analysis, the dynamic behaviors of the coupled three-disk dynamo system with and without time delay are studied to explore novel and complex nonlinear dynamic phenomena in the coupled delayed dynamo system. It is found that the double Hopf bifurcations can be induced in the time-delayed dynamo system. Three different topological structures of the unfolding are obtained under different time delays. Accordingly, it is shown that the novel dynamic behaviors, including quasi-periodic torus, three-dimensional torus and the coexistence of multiple attractors, can appear in the time-delayed dynamo system. Furthermore, by performing the continuation analysis on the periodic orbit generated from the Hopf bifurcation of equilibrium, some new coexistence patterns, e.g., the coexistence of periodic orbits and chaos, the coexistence of quasi-periodic orbits and chaos, are observed in the dynamo system with time delay. Based on the obtained results, it is believed that the inclusion of time delay in the modelling of the three-disk dynamo system is necessary and meaningful for developing an in-depth understanding of dynamo dynamics. This paper presents an integrated analytical and experimental study to the modelling and tuning of a time-delayed vibration absorber (TDVA) with friction. In system modelling, this paper firstly applies the method of averaging to obtain the frequency response function (FRF), and then uses the derived FRF to evaluate the fitness of different friction models. After the determination of the system model, this paper employs the obtained FRF to evaluate the vibration absorption performance with respect to tunable parameters. A significant feature of the TDVA with friction is that its stability is dependent on the excitation parameters. To ensure the stability of the time-delayed control, this paper defines a sufficient condition for stability estimation. Experimental measurements show that the dynamic response of the TDVA with friction can be accurately predicted and the time-delayed control can be precisely achieved by using the modelling and tuning technique provided in this paper.
