Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are bioderived, rodlike particles that form a chiral nematic liquid crystal (LC) in water. In this work, CNCs were used to induce long-range order in a semiconducting polymer, poly[3-(potassium-4-butanoate) thiophene-2,5-diyl] (PPBT). When mixed with CNCs, it was found that PPBT was incorporated into the liquid crystal "template" to form ordered structures with highly birefringent domains, as observed under polarized light. We show that the π-π interactions between polymer chains, which contribute considerably to the energetics of the semiconducting system, are directly influenced by the presence and packing of the liquid crystal phase. Upon increasing the concentration of CNCs from the isotropic to chiral nematic regime, we observe a bathochromic shift in the UV-vis spectra and the emergence of the 0-0 vibrational peak, suggesting enhanced π-π stacking leading to chain coplanarization. Furthermore, the chiral nature of the PPBT/CNC mixture was evidenced by a negative peak in circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, promoting the notion that the polymer chains followed the helicoidal twist of the chiral nematic liquid crystal host. At high temperatures, the peak height ratios and overall intensities of the UV-vis and CD spectra associated with PPBT decreased as the chiral nematic pitch grew larger in size.

We demonstrate that supramolecular assembly and subsequent enhancement of charge transport characteristics of conjugated polymers can be facilitated simply by adding small amounts of a more volatile poor solvent, which can hydrogen bond with the majority solvent. Addition of up to 2 vol % acetone to a precursor solution of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) in chloroform leads to approximately a 4-fold increase in P3HT field-effect mobility. The improvement is associated with hydrogen bonding interactions between acetone and chloroform which decrease the evaporation rate of the mixed solvent. P3HT is less soluble in the binary solvent than in the more readily vaporized chloroform component, and this characteristic enables the supramolecular assembly of P3HT chains at the nanoscale. Two-dimensional molecular ordering of the polymer film was controlled by varying the quantity of poor solvent added to the precursor solution, and the correlation between field-effect mobility and molecular ordering was investigated. Hansen solubility parameters were used to systematically understand how the solvent mixture enhances the alignment and assembly of polymer chains and influences subsequent thin film properties. The value of the relative energy difference (RED) of the solvent with respect to P3HT increased from less than 1 to more than 1 during film formation, which indicates that the solvent characteristics are initially those of a good solvent but transform into those of a poor dissolution medium. A mechanistic illustration of the molecular ordering process during film formation is postulated.

The electrical properties of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) are largely determined by the accumulation layer that extends only a few molecular layers away from the gate dielectric/organic semiconductor interface. To understand degradation processes that occur within the device structure under ambient conditions, it is thus essential to probe the interface using an architecture that minimizes the effects of bulk transport of contaminating species through upper layers of material in a thick film device. Using FETs designed with multiple voltage probes along the conducting channel and an ultrathin film of the active material, we found that the charge carrier density and the FET mobility decrease, and further, the contact and channel properties are strongly correlated. FET devices prepared with an ultrathin film of P3HT become significantly contact limited in air due to a hole diffusion barrier near the drain electrode. Encapsulation of the device with a layered organic/inorganic barrier material consisting of parylene and Al(2)O(3) appreciably retarded diffusion of molecular species from ambient air into P3HT.
