Layer-by-layer thin films are prepared by the alternate deposition of clay particles and ionic organic compounds from solution onto a rigid support. A close examination of the absorption spectra of the donor -acceptor systems reveals that an interaction occurs in the assembly that results in excess acceptor dye being incorporated into the film.

Ultrafast laser shock generation methods and broad-band infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy have provided evidence that shock-induced chemistry in a condensed-phase energetic material occurs on a time scale of tens of picoseconds and involves the nitro group as a primary reactant.

The molecular orientation of well-known representatives of organic semi-conductors from the family of the phthalocyanines [copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and its perfluorinated relative (CuPcF16)] on a conducting polymer thin film using polarization dependent X-ray absorption spectroscopy is studied. A very high degree of molecular ordering is observed in the 20-50 nm thick phthalocyanine films.

Observation of a circular Bragg reflection in the absorption spectrum of a thin film of a liquid-crystalline azo polymer, irradiated with circularly polarized light is reported. Investigations are conducted for various angles of incidence and the changes in the peak shape are examined.

A systematic study of the tails for three different thin films: Fe and Fe(sub 0.65)Ni(sub 0.35) on stepped Cu(111) and Fe/ZnSe(001) is presented. It turns out that the oscillations detected at tails of XMCD spectra are extremely sensitive to the magnetic phase of the sample: the low-spin 1-> low-spin 2 magnetic phase transition of fcc Fe/Cu(111)-vic and directly effects the tail of the XMCD spectra through a chance of the observed features.
