There is limited knowledge about the preservation of aggradation phases in Quaternary fluvial records. Previous numerical modelling of erosion and deposition in Late Quaternary Allier River (France) generated the prediction that this river has reach‐specific fluvial dynamics related to climate‐driven tributary sediment‐flux dynamics. To test this prediction, new optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) samples were collected of the Late Quaternary Fx terrace at five locations along a stretch of 60 km. OSL dates of both quartz and feldspar sand grains indicate that all relatively basalt‐poor sediments display significantly different ages for each reach (ranging from 36.3 ± 2.0 to 21.1 ± 2.3 ka). The more basalt‐rich terrace body consistently yields ages in the range 21.1 ± 1.7 to 16.1 ± 1.5 ka, suggesting contemporaneous aggradation along the whole studied Allier reach during this interval. Our own new OSL date of a Tartaret eruption around 16.8 ± 2.5 ka also fits this time window, suggesting a direct link with volcanic activity. However, there are many more dated volcanic events that coincide with the older basalt‐poor units, making it less likely that a direct link between terrace‐sediment basalt content and volcanic activity exists. The timings of the dated depositional events in MIS 3 and 2 all match with simulated climate drivers and published landscape erosion rates. Counterintuitively, the volcanic Chaîne des Puys area supplied more sediment during the cold and dry Last Glacial Maximum. Basalt content in the Allier terrace sediments reflects climate‐related sediment‐flux dynamics upstream. The scarcity of older basalt‐poor sediment bodies from MIS 4 and 3 in the Fx terrace suggests that less sediment was supplied and/or the intermittent erosional phases in the Allier were very effective at removing them. We hypothesize that this observation of predominant preservation of the last aggradation phase could be a common phenomenon in most climate‐driven terraces. © 2020 The Authors. Luminescence dating at the Luochuan loess type (China) section is at present limited to ∼0.1 Ma using quartz blue light stimulated luminescence (BLSL), but can be extended back in time to ∼0.5 Ma by resorting to the more developmental post-infrared infrared stimulated luminescence (post-IR IRSL) and thermally transferred OSL (TT-OSL) signals. Since both the latter are associated with systematic uncertainties due to the potential (a)-thermal instability of these signals, a search continues for alternative, and demonstrably stable luminescence signals that can cover the entire Quaternary timescale. Here we explore the violet stimulated luminescence (VSL) signal at the Luochuan section, which provides a continuous archive of homogenous sediment with favourable luminescence characteristics and a solid independent age framework. By testing several VSL protocols and their associated performance, we demonstrate that the Multi-Aliquot Additive-Dose (MAAD) protocol produces a VSL chronology at Luochuan which is in agreement with independent ages up to ∼0.6 Ma. For a more representative environmental dose rate of ∼2 Gy/ka (∼35% lower than at Luochuan), the documented range of MAAD-VSL sensitivity (200–1800 Gy) would correspond to the ability to date sediment up to ∼1 Ma back in time, offering a remarkable advance over existing methods. Recently proposed post-infrared infrared stimulated luminescence (post-IR IRSL or pIR) dating protocols have largely overcome problems associated with anomalous fading and have become increasingly important for age determination of Quaternary sediments. Here, we investigate the suitability of the proposed post-IR IRSL protocols for accurate equivalent-dose estimation on K-feldspar extracts. Our research focuses on potential sensitivity changes between the natural signal and the first test dose signal in single-aliquot regenerative dose (SAR) procedures that are not detected and thus not corrected using test-dose responses. For these investigations, we employed the Single Aliquot Regeneration and Added dose (SARA) procedure, which combines equivalent-dose estimation with a dose recovery test. Results indicated that high-temperature preheats (>260 °C for 60 s) may induce a trapping sensitivity change in IRSL signals measured at low temperature (<100 °C). As this sensitivity change cannot be detected through test dose responses in the SAR protocol, it may result in an invalid equivalent-dose estimation. However, trapping sensitivity changes were not observed after low temperature preheats (<260 °C for 60 s), nor in pIR signals measured at elevated temperature (>100 °C) after a high temperature preheat. Our results indicate that the SAR protocol is appropriate for equivalent-dose determination using elevated-temperature pIR signals (e.g. pIR at 290 °C or multiple elevated temperature pIR at 250 °C). The SAR protocol may also be appropriate for equivalent-dose determination using low temperature pIR signals, provided that the combination of preheat and measurement temperature is carefully chosen to avoid the unwanted effects of sensitivity change during the first preheat.
