This paper deals with the results of a study of the thermodestruction of the earlywood and latewood in the 1988-1998 growth rings of Gmelin larch ( Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr.) trees growing along the polar tree line (7052′53″N, 102°58′26″E, Taimyr Peninsula). The study used methods of thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Thermogravimetric data obtained were analyzed by Ozawa-Flynn-Wall kinetic model. We determined macrokinetic parameters of thermodestruction. Earlywood and latewood showed no significant difference in cellulose/hemicellulose/lignin ratio, whereas they differed significantly in destruction average value of activation energy (197.55 and 55.90 kJ mol, respectively). Our analysis of the correlation of thermodestruction values with mean monthly air temperature and precipitation revealed that component composition of both earlywood and latewood was influenced more by the weather conditions at the beginning of the growing season (April-June). Air temperature had markable influence on the wood component composition during cell wall synthesis only in latewood, whereas precipitation influenced the composition in both latewood and earlywood. TG/DTG and DSC methods were found to be promising for developing information on biochemical composition of early and latewood tracheids in stems and for identifying the extent of the influence of climatic changes on cell wall synthesis. In this study, silica sol (SiO sol) and KCO were used as flame retardants for wood. The synergistic effect of SiO sol and KCO on the flame retardancy, leaching resistance, and thermal properties of wood was investigated. The limiting oxygen index results revealed a significant improvement in the flame retardancy and leaching resistance of the wood sample treated with KCO and SiO sol using the double bath technique. The thermal analysis results showed that the synergistic effect of KCO and the SiO sol effectively prolonged the degradation of the wood sample during the charring stage and improved the stability of the char residue. The thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry analysis and scanning electron microscopy results showed that KCO catalyzed the degradation reaction of the wood sample at lower temperatures resulting in an increase in the water and carbon dioxide output, and the SiO sol formed a compact and melted barrier on the surface of the char residue, which hindered the transfer of heat and combustible gases in the condensed phase. Wood modification is an efficient method to improve wood performance and expand the applications of wood material. In this study, a combination modification method of aluminum sol-gel and furfurylation was developed to improve the performance of poplar wood. Wood samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The properties of the treated wood, including thermal stability, water uptake, dimensional stability, and dynamic wettability were also evaluated. The thermogravimetric analysis results indicated that the incorporation of an aluminum-based gel could prevent furfurylated wood from thermal degradation by converting the gel into nano-Al2O3. The aluminum-based sol-gel apparently hindered furfuryl alcohol polymerization and reduced the weight percent gain of the samples; the anti-swelling efficiency of the treated wood was over 57% (with little decrease) due to crosslinking between the wood and aluminum-based gel. To upgrade the utilization of kraft lignin (KL) for high-performance lignin-based materials (e.g., carbon fiber), the purity, molecular mass distribution (MMD), and thermal properties need to be improved and adjusted to target values. Therefore, different methods, such as ultrasonic extraction (UE), solvent extraction, dialysis, and hot water treatment (HWT), were applied for the purification of KL. The chemical and thermal properties of purified lignin have been characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared, gel permeation chromatography, elemental analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The lignin fractions obtained by UE with ethanol/acetone (E/A) mixture (9:1) revealed a very narrow MMD and were nearly free of inorganic compounds and carbohydrates. Further, the E/A-extracted lignin showed a lower glass transition temperature ( Tg) and a clearly detectable melting temperature ( Tm). Dialysis followed by HWT at 220°C is an efficient method for the removal of inorganics and carbohydrates; however, lignin was partly forming condensed structures during the treatment. Ionic liquids (ILs) have been investigated for their potential as reagents for enhancing the fire resistance of wood. The following ILs were in focus: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C2mim][PF6]). Supposedly, these ILs do not dissolve or degrade wood components to a large extent. No morphologic changes were observed in any ILtreated wood samples, but they showed an enhanced fire resistance compared with that of untreated wood. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis demonstrated that the ILs are penetrated into the cell walls. The wood treated with [C2mim][PF6] exhibited the highest fire resistance based on thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyzer studies: it was more resistant against flaming at approximately 350°C and the subsequent glowing at higher temperatures. This enhanced fire resistance was interpreted by dehydration in the presence of the ILs under observation. In general, ILs are promising reagents for improving the thermal properties of wood. The influence of wood components and cellulose crystallinity on the kinetic degradation of different wood species has been investigated using thermogravimetry. Four wood species were studied: Pinus elliottii (PIE), Eucalyptus grandis (EUG), Mezilaurus itauba (ITA) and Dipteryx odorata (DIP). Thermogravimetric results showed that higher extractive contents in the wood accelerate the degradation process and promote an increase in the conversion values at low temperatures. Alternatively, the results indicated that the cellulose crystallinity inhibits wood degradation; organized cellulose regions slow the degradation process because the well-packed cellulose chains impede heat diffusion, which improves the wood’s thermal stability. The wood degradation mechanism occurs by diffusion processes when the conversion values are below 0.4. This work deals with pyrolysis decomposition of wood chips and the main components of wood by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Experiments were carried out in the inert atmosphere of nitrogen. The pyrolysis temperature range was varied linearly from 20 °C to 900 °C with the heating rate equal to 5 K min1 to detect all the changes without overlapping. Samples of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin were used as main components of wood. Thermogravimetric (TG) and differential thermogravimetric (DTG) curves were obtained from experimental data. These records were compared with those obtained by mathematical modeling. The distribution activation energy model (DAEM) was used for mathematical description of experimental data and the prediction of kinetic parameters. According to the DAEM approach, every possible decomposition reaction with various values of activation energies is in progress at each time and temperature. Preexponential factors, mean activation energy and variance were obtained as kinetic parameters. This model is able to describe the integral decomposition curve of biomass, however, a problem occurs when describing the differential curve of biomass thermal decomposition. Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the torrefaction behavior of woody biomass (Lauan) blocks and its influence on the properties of the wood. Three different torrefaction temperatures of 220, 250 and 280 °C, corresponding to light, mild and severe torrefactions, and four torrefaction times of 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 h were considered. After analyzing the torrefied woods, it was found that the torrefaction temperature of 280 °C was able to increase the calorific value of the wood up to 40%. However, over 50% of weight was lost from the wood. The grindability of the torrefied wood could be improved in a significant way if the torrefaction temperature was as high as 250 °C and the torrefaction time longer than 1 h. Therefore, the torrefaction temperature of 250 °C along with the torrefaction time longer than 1 h was the recommended operation to intensify the heating value and grindability as well as to avoid too much mass loss of the wood. This study also suggested that over 50% of the reacted wood was converted into condensed liquid. The main components in the liquid were monoaromatics; little amount of heterocyclic hydrocarbons were also obtained from the torrefactions, especially at the torrefaction temperature of 280 °C. In this study, thermal properties of wood/HDPE composites were measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The composites comprised of different wood (45%, 55%, and 65%) and maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) contents (0%, 1.5%, and 3%), and particle size (20, 40, and 80 mesh) were produced by extrusion method. TGA measurements showed that wood content is the most important factor affecting the thermal stability, initial mass loss, and ash content of the composites. Any increase in wood content led to increase in ash content and less thermally stable composites. MAPP and particle size were found to have less impact on thermal stability. By retarding the formation of charcoal MAPP influenced thermal stability of composites adversely in composites consisting of bigger particle. Composites made of 65% wood content with 20 mesh size and 0% MAPP were more thermally stable than composites made of 65% wood content with 80 mesh size and 3% MAPP, in the temperature range of 270-500°C. Abstract: Experimental techniques such as the cone calorimeter, representing realistic fire conditions, and the thermogravimetric analyser (TGA) combined with evolved gas analysis (EGA) can be used to determine flammability and degradation properties of materials. The desire is to correlate the flammability properties measured in the cone calorimeter for samples of size 100mm×100mm with those measured or deduced from TGA combined with EGA for milligram samples. Such an achievement will allow the design of fire-safe materials by quickly assessing (a) the fire safety of materials in their earliest milligram formulation and (b) the dependence of their flammability properties on the molecular structure of the material. In the present study, a cone calorimeter and TGA investigation is conducted for commercial Nordic Spruce wood impregnated by mono-ammonium phosphate (fire retardant, FR) through a vacuum pressure method. Experiments in the cone calorimeter with increasing FR concentrations indicated that (a) the char yields increased, (b) the apparent ignition temperature increased, (c) time to piloted ignition increased, (d) the total amount of heat released was reduced, (e) the peak heat release rate was reduced and (f) the carbon monoxide and smoke yields increased especially before ignition occurred. By comparison, char yields also increased with FR content in the TGA degradation experiments in nitrogen. The increase in the char yield with FR content explains quantitatively the decrease in the heat release in the cone calorimeter. By contrast, the onset temperatures measured in TGA decreased, whereas the ignition temperature deduced in the cone calorimeter increased with FR content. This difference is attributed to reduced yield of levoglucosan (reported in recent literature using TGA/EGA) with increased char yield as well as to the presence of phosphorous containing moieties in the volatiles, which both can quench piloted ignition. Finally, the TGA measurements showed that the FR concentrations decreased for milligram samples at different distances from the surface of the wood used in the cone calorimeter measurements. The variation of FR retardant with depth needs to be considered when using TGA data to interpret cone calorimeter measurements and the fire performance of the FR wood in approval tests such as the single burning item (SBI). Thermal treatment is one of environmental friendly wood modification processes, developed in order to improve wood’s natural durability and dimensional stability. Beside wood species, mainly isothermal temperature of heat-treatment and process duration affect these properties, which also correlate with the mass losses caused by the treatment. However, there is a lack of suitable external quality control methods. In this work thermogravimetry as a potential method for determining the degree of thermal modification is presented. Several calibration curves, representing the mass losses in a certain temperature range (the values obtained from the TG curves) compared to weight losses caused by previous heat-treatment (known values), were established for spruce wood samples modified at different isothermal temperatures (from 170 to 220 °C). Linear plot and good correlation factors ( R2 = 0.95 and 0.96) were obtained for the TG mass losses from 130 to 280 °C and from 130 to 300 °C, both under nitrogen atmosphere. The predominant cause of mass loss in this temperature region was depolymerisation and thermal decomposition of hemicelluloses residues.
