We use molecular dynamics simulations over microsecond time scales to study the structure and dynamics of coarse-grained models for nanoparticle-based ionic liquids. The systems of interest consist of particles with charged surface groups and linear or three-arm counterions, which also act as the solvent. A comparable uncharged model of nanoparticles with tethered chains is also studied. The pair correlation functions display a rich structure resulting from the packing of cores and chains, as well as electrostatic effects. Even though electrostatic interactions between oppositely charged ions at contact are much greater than the thermal energy, we find that chain dynamics at intermediate time scales are dominated by chain hopping between core particles. The uncharged core particles with tethered chains diffuse faster than the ionic core particles.

The mean ionic activity coefficients of aqueous NaCl solutions of varying concentrations at 298.15 K and 1 bar have been obtained from molecular dynamics simulations by gradually turning on the interactions of an ion pair inserted into the solution. Several common non-polarizable water and ion models have been used in the simulations. Gibbs-Duhem equation calculations of the thermodynamic activity of water are used to confirm the thermodynamic consistency of the mean ionic activity coefficients. While the majority of model combinations predict the correct trends in mean ionic activity coefficients, they overestimate their values at high salt concentrations. The solubility predictions also suffer from inaccuracies, with all models underpredicting the experimental values, some by large factors. Molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations have been carried out to obtain thermodynamic and transport properties of the binary mixture H2O+NaCl at temperatures from T = 298 to 473 K. In particular, vapor pressures, liquid densities, viscosities, and vapor-liquid interfacial tensions have been obtained as functions of pressure and salt concentration. Several previously proposed fixedpoint-charge models that include either Lennard-Jones (LJ) 12-6 or exponential-6 (Exp6) functional forms to describe non-Coulombic interactions were studied. In particular, for water we used the SPC and SPC/E (LJ) models in their rigid forms, a semiflexible version of the SPC/E (LJ) model, and the Errington-Panagiotopoulos Exp6 model; for NaCl, we used the Smith-Dang and Joung-Cheatham (LJ) parameterizations as well as the Tosi-Fumi (Exp6) model. While none of the model combinations are able to reproduce simultaneously all target properties, vapor pressures are well represented using the SPC plus Joung-Cheathem model combination, and all LJ models do well for the liquid density, with the semiflexible SPC/E plus Joung-Cheatham combination being the most accurate. For viscosities, the combination of rigid SPC/E plus Smith-Dang is the best alternative. For interfacial tensions, the combination of the semiflexible SPC/E plus Smith-Dang or Joung-Cheatham gives the best results. Inclusion of water flexibility improves the mixture densities and interfacial tensions, at the cost of larger deviations for the vapor pressures and viscosities. The Exp6 water plus Tosi-Fumi salt model combination was found to perform poorly for most of the properties of interest, in particular being unable to describe the experimental trend for the vapor pressure as a function of salt concentration. We use the weighted histogram analysis method [S. Kumar, D. Bouzida, R. H. Swendsen, P. A. Kollman, and J. M. Rosenberg, J. Comput. Chem. 13, 1011 (1992)] to calculate the free energy surface of the ST2 model of water as a function of density and bond-orientational order. We perform our calculations at deeply supercooled conditions (T = 228.6 K, P = 2.2 kbar; T = 235 K, P = 2.2 kbar) and focus our attention on the region of bond-orientational order that is relevant to disordered phases. We find a first-order transition between a low-density liquid (LDL, ρ ≈ 0.9 g/cc) and a high-density liquid (HDL, ρ ≈ 1.15 g/cc), confirming our earlier sampling of the free energy surface of this model as a function of density [Y. Liu, A. Z. Panagiotopoulos, and P. G. Debenedetti, J. Chem. Phys. 131, 104508 (2009)]. We demonstrate the disappearance of the LDL basin at high pressure and of the HDL basin at low pressure, in agreement with independent simulations of the system's equation of state. Consistency between directly computed and reweighted free energies, as well as between free energy surfaces computed using different thermodynamic starting conditions, confirms proper equilibrium sampling. Diffusion and structural relaxation calculations demonstrate that equilibration of the LDL phase, which exhibits slow dynamics, is attained in the course of the simulations. Repeated flipping between the LDL and HDL phases in the course of long molecular dynamics runs provides further evidence of a phase transition. We use the Ewald summation with vacuum boundary conditions to calculate long-ranged Coulombic interactions and show that conducting boundary conditions lead to unphysical behavior at low temperatures. We perform histogram-reweighting grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations of the Lennard-Jones fluid confined between two parallel hard walls and determine the vapor-liquid critical and coexistence properties in the range of σ≤H≤6σ and 10σ≤Lx,Ly≤28σ, where H is the wall separation, Lx=Ly is the system size and σ is the characteristic length. By matching the probability distribution of the ordering operator, P(M), to the three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) Ising universality classes according to the mixed-field finite-size scaling approach, we establish a “phase diagram” in the (H,L) plane, showing the boundary between four types of behavior: 3D, quasi-3D, quasi-2D, and 2D. In order to facilitate 2D critical point calculation, we present a four-parameter analytical expression for the 2D Ising universal distribution. We show that the infinite-system-size critical points obtained by extrapolation from the apparent 3D and 2D critical points have only minor differences with each other. In agreement with recent reports in the literature [Jana et al., J. Chem. Phys. 130, 214707 (2009)], we find departure from linearity in the relationship between critical temperature and inverse wall separation, as well as nonmonotonic dependence of the critical density and the liquid density at coexistence upon wall separation. Implicit water potentials are developed for the study of thermodynamic and structural properties of solutions of NaCl, LiCl, and KCl. The interaction potential between cations and anions is parametrized from the ionic crystal potential. Two short-range corrections were added to the system to account for the water solvent. The first is due to dielectric saturation which reduces the dielectric permittivity in the vicinity of an ion. The second is a repulsive Gaussian potential which represents the first hydration shell around the ions. Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations were performed to calculate the mean ionic activity coefficients. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to calculate the radial distribution functions of 1.0 molal solutions at 298 K which were used to compare the structure of the explicit and implicit water simulations. The implementation of dielectric saturation and a repulsive hydration potential results in an excellent description of the mean activity coefficient and is able to capture structural features of contact ion pairs and solvent separated ions. We calculate the global phase diagram using classical statistical mechanics for an isotropic pair potential that has been previously [Rechtsman et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 228301 (2005)] shown to produce the low-coordinated two-dimensional honeycomb crystal as the ground-state structure. Low-coordinated crystals are of practical interest because they have desirable photonic band-gap properties. The phase diagram is obtained from Helmholtz free energies calculated using thermodynamic integration and Monte Carlo simulations. Our results show that the honeycomb crystal remains stable in the global phase diagram even after temperature effects are taken fully into account. Other stable phases in the phase diagram are high and low density triangular phases and a fluid phase. We find no evidence of gas-liquid or liquid-liquid phase coexistence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, we report results for the phase diagram of the two-dimensional Coulomb system. We use a recently proposed simulation method, thermodynamic scaling Monte Carlo, to determine the Kosterlitz–Thouless insulator/conductor transition line and the first-order vapor–liquid coexistence curve. The Kosterlitz–Thouless line terminates at the first-order coexistence curve close to the gas–liquid critical point. Our estimate of the vapor–liquid critical point is, T*≊0.056, ρ*≊0.21, in only modest agreement with previous theoretical estimates and semiquantitative numerical results. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. We report a new implicit-solvent simulation model for electrolyte mixtures based on the concept of concentration dependent dielectric permittivity. A combining rule is found to predict the dielectric permittivity of electrolyte mixtures based on the experimentally measured dielectric permittivity for pure electrolytes as well as the mole fractions of the electrolytes in mixtures. Using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate that this approach allows us to accurately reproduce the mean ionic activity coefficients of NaCl in NaCl–CaCl2 mixtures at ionic strengths up to I = 3M. We have performed atomistic molecular dynamics simulations coupled with thermodynamic integration to obtain the excess chemical potential and pressure-composition phase diagrams for CO2in poly(ethylene oxide) oligomers. Poly(ethylene oxide) dimethyl ether, CH3O(CH2CH2O)nCH3(PEO for short) is a widely applied physical solvent that forms the major organic constituent of a class of novel nanoparticle-based absorbents. Good predictions were obtained for pressure–composition–density relations for CO2+ PEO oligomers (2 ≤n≤ 12), using the Potoff force field for PEO [J. Chem. Phys. 136, 044514 (2012)] together with the TraPPE model for CO2[AIChE J. 47, 1676 (2001)]. Water effects on Henry’s constant of CO2in PEO have also been investigated. Addition of modest amounts of water in PEO produces a relatively small increase in Henry’s constant. Dependence of the calculated Henry’s constant on the weight percentage of water falls on a temperature-dependent master curve, irrespective of PEO chain length. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It was demonstrated that finely discretized lattice models for fluids with particles interacting via Lennard-Jones or exponential-6 potentials have essentially identical thermodynamic and structural properties to their continuum counterparts. Grand canonical histogram reweighting Monte Carlo calculations were performed for systems with repulsion exponents between 11 and 22. Critical parameters were determined from mixed-field finite-size scaling methods. Numerical equivalence of lattice and continuous space models, within simulation uncertainties, was observed for lattices with ratio of particle diameter σ to grid spacing of 10. The lattice model calculations were more efficient computationally by factors between 10 and 20. It was also shown that Lennard-Jones and exponential-6 based models with identical critical properties can be constructed by appropriate choice of the repulsion exponent. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. Conspectus: Molecular simulation techniques using classical force-fields occupy the space between ab initio quantum mechanical methods and phenomenological correlations. In particular, Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics algorithms can be used to provide quantitative predictions of thermodynamic and transport properties of fluids relevant for geologic carbon sequestration at conditions for which experimental data are uncertain or not available. These methods can cover time and length scales far exceeding those of quantum chemical methods, while maintaining transferability and predictive power lacking from phenomenological correlations. The accuracy of predictions depends sensitively on the quality of the molecular models used. Many existing fixed-point-charge models for water and aqueous mixtures fail to represent accurately these fluid properties, especially when descriptions covering broad ranges of thermodynamic conditions are needed. Recent work on development of accurate models for water, CO2, and dissolved salts, as well as their mixtures, is summarized in this Account. Polarizable models that can respond to the different dielectric environments in aqueous versus nonaqueous phases are necessary for predictions of properties over extended ranges of temperatures and pressures. Phase compositions and densities, activity coefficients of the dissolved salts, interfacial tensions, viscosities and diffusivities can be obtained in near-quantitative agreement to available experimental data, using relatively modest computational resources. In some cases, for example, for the composition of the CO2-rich phase in coexistence with an aqueous phase, recent results from molecular simulations have helped discriminate among conflicting experimental data sets. The sensitivity of properties on the quality of the intermolecular interaction model varies significantly. Properties such as the phase compositions or electrolyte activity coefficients are much more sensitive than phase densities, viscosities, or component diffusivities. Strong confinement effects on physical properties in nanoscale media can also be directly obtained from molecular simulations. Future work on molecular modeling for CO2 and aqueous brines is likely to be focused on more systematic generation of interaction models by utilizing quantum chemical as well as direct experimental measurements. New ion models need to be developed for use with the current generation of polarizable water models, including ion-ion interactions that will allow for accurate description of dense, mixed brines. Methods will need to be devised that go beyond the use of effective potentials for incorporation of quantum effects known to be important for water, and reactive force fields developed that can handle bond creation and breaking in systems with carbonate and silicate minerals. Another area of potential future work is the integration of molecular simulation methods in multiscale models for the chemical reactions leading to mineral dissolution and flow within the porous media in underground formations.
