A strong Battery Management System (BMS) is essential for the reliable and safe operation of batteries, which have been widely used in many large power applications, including EVs and hybrid EVs. This study contains experimental and numerical investigation of the shape effect of the pack on the performances of PCM (or GNP/PCM) based passive thermally protected battery packs. Also, the performances of the PCM and thermally enhanced GNP/PCM composite for battery thermal protection are compared from low to high discharge rates. The thermal response results show that the cylindrical pack performs worse than the rectangular pack in terms of the maximum temperature and maximum temperature difference performance criteria. For the maximum temperature restriction criteria, 7% GNP/RT44 composite, that has enhanced thermal conductivity, performs better at first, but then its performance deteriorates compared to RT44 depending on the increase of its viscosity. It was determined that 7% GNP/RT-44 extend the effective protection times by 95.8%, 73.3% and 28.0% at the discharge rates of 4.4 W, 6.6 W and 8.8 W, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• The heat generation model for cylindrical Li-ion battery was built. • A liquid immersion cooling battery pack containing 60 batteries were established. • At 2C discharge rate, 0.5 L/min flow rate was recommended. • The battery pack can address localized high-rate discharge events (4.5C or 6.5C). • Liquid immersion cooling BTMSs have great heat dissipation performance. With the increasingly severe challenges of the thermal management of battery packs for electric vehicles, the liquid immersion cooling technology has gradually attracted more attention due to its superior characteristics such as high heat dissipation efficiency, well temperature uniformity and low risk of thermal runaway. To investigate the heat transfer characteristics of the liquid immersion cooling BTMSs, the 3D model of the 60-cell immersion cooling battery pack was established, and a well-established heat generation model that leveraged parameters derived from theoretical analysis and experiments was incorporated into the 3D simulation to analyze the thermal characteristics of battery pack. The simulation results showed that under the discharging rate of 2C, even with the lowest coolant flow rate in this work (0.2 L/min), no localized abnormal overheating within the battery pack was observed, and the highest temperature was 34.22 °C. The temperature uniformity within the battery pack improved with the increase of the coolant flow rate. It was recommended to maintain a flow rate above 0.5 L/min to ensure a temperature difference below 5 °C. The experimental apparatus of the immersion cooling battery pack was also developed to explore the heat dissipation and temperature uniformity at 2C discharge rate. The simulation results were in well agreement with the experimental results, with the deviation less than 0.43 °C when the flow rate exceeded 0.6 L/min. The effect of the localized high-rate discharge events (4.5C and 6.5C) at different battery pack locations on temperature distribution and uniformity was further discussed based on the verified 3D model. The results suggested that liquid immersion cooling systems offered promising potential for achieving both efficient heat dissipation and preventing thermal runaway in battery packs. This experimental study focused on the comparison of thermal protection performances of macro and/or nano enhanced organic PCM in a representative battery pack from low to high discharge rates. The macro/nano enhanced RT-44 provides the desired battery thermal protection requirements in terms of criteria such as maximum temperature and maximum temperature difference restriction and uniform temperature distribution throughout the battery pack. It increases the effective battery thermal protection time by 117%-32% depending on the discharge rates. While PCM thermal protection provides a more homogeneous temperature distribution throughout the battery pack, nano and/or macro enhanced one provides it throughout the cell. Energy policy of EU promotes electro-mobility, especially the use of bicycles and electric bicycles. PEDELEC is a form of an electric bicycle that does not require a registry plate, and with a battery power 250 W electric motor helps the driver to overcome the altitude differences and influence of the wind. Batteries for electric bicycles are based on Li-Ion technology. Battery packs are made of standard cells that have a lifecycle of 1000 cycles. In realistic exploration conditions, the lifecycle is four years and up to a third of the declared cycle of use. The reason for this is the climatic conditions which lead to increased temperatures in usage and charging temperatures, which significantly reduce their life cycle. Paper on a practical example shows the dynamics of PEDELEC usage, energy needs for specific route characteristics, as well as changes in the thermal pattern of the battery and its condition after 4 years of use. The analysis was performed with Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) using infrared thermography, which confirmed the inhomogeneity of thermal patterns and the moment of final battery failure. The computational domain consists of sixty cylindrical Li-ion cells inserted into the cooling module socket with constant power input conditions. The predicted results are consistent with the experimental results, with an average error of 1.28%. • Diverging channel design cooling plate with oblique fins is newly proposed. • Thermal unbalance of the battery module is improved using the proposed design. • Cell-to-cell temperature difference in the pack cooling is decreased by 19.07%. • The pumping power to satisfy the temperature conditions is decreased by 67.8%. In this study, the thermal and hydraulic performances of a battery thermal management system are investigated in terms of the design of the cooling plate. A diverging channel with oblique fins (DCOF) cooling plate is newly proposed to overcome the limitations of the conventional straight channel cooling plate. The diverging design is applied to control the coolant velocity and heat transfer area, with oblique fins inserted to enhance the heat transfer efficiency. A simulation model of the battery and cooling system is developed and experimentally validated. When the DCOF design is applied to the battery module, the temperature uniformity is improved in terms of the temperature difference and standard deviation. As the investigation is extended from the module to the battery pack, the temperature difference and temperature standard deviation in the battery module are improved by 19.07% and 27.14%, respectively. Considering the power consumption of the cooling system, as the thermal performance of the DCOF design and baseline design is maintained, the power consumption of the coolant pump of the DCOF design is significantly reduced by 67.8%. Due to the importance of examining the temperature of battery packs (BYP), a study on the temperature of a lithium-ion BYP with 9 cylindrical cells is performed in this article. The BYP is filled with phase change material (PCM) to better temperature uniformity on the battery cells. The batteries and the PCM pack are placed in an air channel with two inlets. At the inlets, 4 arc blades are supposed to guide the airflow to enhance the uniformity of cooling in the BYP. By changing the horizontal and vertical distance (VD) of the batteries inside the pack, this study is carried out in 2500 s for the charging and discharging times of the batteries (1.5C rate). The thermal analysis is done on the batteries using COMSOL software. The results show that an increment in the horizontal distance (HD) of batteries has less effect on battery temperature (T-BT) and PCM phase change compared to their VD. By enhancing the horizontal and VDs of the batteries, the value of the PCM phase change during the maximum T-BT is higher. The heat transfer coefficient (HTCT) between the PCM and the air is also decreased by increasing the distance between the batteries. Large-scale commercialization of electric vehicles (EVs) seeks to develop battery systems with higher energy efficiency and improved thermal performance. Integrating simulation-based design optimization in battery development process expands the possibilities for novel design exploration. This study presents a dual-stage multiphysics simulation optimization methodology for comprehensive concept design of Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery packs for EV applications. At the first stage, multi-objective optimization of electrochemical thermally coupled cells is performed using genetic algorithm considering the specific energy and the maximum temperature of the cells as design objectives. At the second stage, the energy efficiency and the thermal performances of each optimally designed cell are evaluated under pack operation to account for cell-to-pack interactions under realistic working scenarios. When operating at 1.5 C discharge current, the battery pack comprising optimally designed cells for which the specific energy and the maximum temperature are equally weighted delivers the highest specific energy with enhanced thermal performance. The most favorable pack design shows 8% reduction in maximum pack temperature and 16.1% reduction in module-to-module temperature variations compared to commercially available pack. • A 35kWh battery pack with a novel hybrid thermal management system is prototyped. • Phase change material is innovatively integrated with cooling plate. • The battery thermal management at the battery pack level and module level is studied. • Both cooling and thermal insulation performances are investigated. • Desirable control strategies are obtained for battery pack under 0.5C to 1.5C discharge rates. Controlling the temperature of a battery pack within an optimal range and ensuring uniform temperature distribution are the key to improving battery life. With the elevating energy density of batteries, more efficient and energy-saving thermal management system is urgently required for improving electric vehicle (EV) performance in terms of safety and long-term durability. In this work, a novel hybrid thermal management system towards a high-voltage battery pack for EVs is developed. Both passive and active components are integrated into the cooling plate to provide a synergistic function. A 35kWh battery pack incorporated with electrical, mechanical and thermal management components was designed, manufactured and integrated. As the core hardware, a pack-level cooling plate set was innovatively designed by integrating with phase change material (PCM). The results show that the combined passive and active cooling strategy ensured a desirable working temperature below 40˚C and a uniform heat distribution across the entire pack at discharging rates ranging from 0.5C to 1.5C under customized control strategies. Moreover, the cycling performance of air cooling and hybrid cooling, as well as the thermal insulation performance at both battery module level and pack level are compared, demonstrating the superior thermal management capability of the hybrid solution. Power batteries are treated as heart of the electrical vehicles and they release huge amount of heat throughout both charging and discharging processes. Hence Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) is designed in order to control maximum temperature rise within a battery pack and to maintain even temperature distribution among the cells for increasing life span, efficiency and safety of the batteries. With an enticing characteristic feature such as low parasitic power, low weight, uniform temperature distribution among cells, passive thermal management system namely Phase Change Material (PCM) is justified as an efficient BTMS in recent years. The current work begins with the introduction of Hybrid Thermal Management System combined with PCM for enhancing cooling performance of BTMS. In addition to that, some of the thermal conductivity enrichment techniques for PCM (i.e. the usage of thermal conductive particles, cellular foams, encapsulation) are summarized. Research studies which involves various key parameters such as cell spacing, mass of PCM, thickness of PCM, specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity influencing the performance of systems are reviewed. Lithium-ion battery systems are becoming a major component in numerous applications. The thermal behaviour of cells should be monitored for many reasons. In this paper, the investigation of the energy balance for lithium-ion battery system is described. The electrothermal model allows to describe heat generation and heat dissipation processes in all components of a battery pack (BP). Moreover, this model can be easily adapted for bigger, modular battery systems, since the primitive in the proposed model is a single cell. A method to determine the energy balance through experimental investigations and to validate the model is also proposed. Four types of BPs with sixteen cylindrical 18650 lithium-ion cells were tested. The influence of both busbar material and the presence of heatsinks on the BP thermal conditions was investigated. The results show that the heat accumulated in cells can be decreased by 20% and the cell temperature lowered by 8 °C if additional elements are used in a BP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Heat transfer and phase change flow inside a Li-ion battery enclosure filled with a copper metal foam embedded in paraffin wax phase change material (PCM) are studied numerically. For simplicity and due to the axisymmetric of the enclosure geometry, half of the battery cell is considered as the heat source on the right wall. The vertical walls are considered symmetric, while the bottom wall is insulated, and the top wall is subjected to the convective heat transfer. The governing equations of the flow and heat transfer are presented as partial differential equations and then transformed into non-dimensional forms and solved by employing the finite element method. The local thermal equilibrium model was used, which limits the model to metal foams with high pore densities. For validation, results are compared with some of the well-known studies in the literature. The isotherms and streamlines are presented for three levels of heat pulse intensity. Both melting and solidification occur as a result of the unsteady heat pulses induced by the thermal source. The vertical location of the battery inside the enclosure can affect the streamlines and isotherm contours. Results show that for higher heat pulse powers, the melt volume fraction (MVF) increases, and heatsink will have higher efficiency.
