Abstract

Polycrystalline garnet ferrites Dy3-xNix Fe5O12, where (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5) have been prepared by the standard ceramic technique and their crystalline structure were identified by X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy. The differential thermal analysis (DTA) reveals two peaks. It is observed that an endothermic peak between 587 and 498 K for all samples which is due to the magnetic phase change from ferrimagnetic to paramagnetic state. The exothermic peak at about 700 K may be attributed to the crystallization of Dy3-x NixFe5O12 with garnet structure. DC electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power, charge carrier concentration and charge carrier mobility have been studied at different temperatures: It was found that the DC electrical conductivity increases linearly with increasing temperature ensuring the semiconducting nature of samples. The values of the thermoelectric power were negative for samples of 0.0 < x < 0.4 indicating that the majority of the charge carrier are electrons in these samples while it was positive for sample of x = 0.5 at room temperature, and negative at high temperature. Using the values of the DC electrical conductivity and thermoelectric power, the values of the charge carrier concentration and the charge carrier mobility were calculated. Abstract

This article studied the thermal behavior and the evolution of the crystalline phases with temperature of the red mud (bauxite tailing) from an aluminum industry at Maranhão, North-Northwestern Brazil. The experiments were carried out by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Simultaneous Thermal Analysis (TG-DSC), Optical Dilatometry up to 1623 K, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) of previously heated samples between 523 and 1523 K. The crystalline phases and the amorphous contents were quantified on raw and heated samples (at 1523 K) according to the Rietveld Quantitative Analysis (RQA) method. The data obtained showed that the raw red mud is composed by a mixture of seven different phases (hematite, goethite, sodalite, anatase, gibbsite, calcite, and amorphous). Finally in the interval of 1023-1523 K the following crystalline phases: hematite, nepheline, sodalite, anatase, perovskite, and pseudobrookite have been observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

53. Milling process of petroleum coke for sintered steel applications.

Abstract

The effect of milling on different properties of a petroleum coke has been evaluated. The material was subjected to planetary milling at two different rates (400 and 600 rev min-1) for different times up to 48 h. The milled material was characterised by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, sieve analysis, thermal analysis, chemical analysis, specific surface area and compressibility has been undertaken. The results show that the milling produces a very quick loss of the crystal structure of the coke and a rapid comminution, which lead to large increases in specific surface area and compressibility losses. The coke has shown a high activity through the milling process, absorbing a great quantity of oxygen. The increase in milling time shifts its thermal decomposition to lower temperatures. SO adsorption values of K1, K2, and S clay samples were measured at 20 °C and pressures up to 106 kPa. Sepiolite sample (S) primarily consists of pure sepiolite, only dolomite present as accompanying mineral. Both kaolinite samples, K1 and K2, mainly contain kaolinite as the major clay mineral and quartz as impurity. In K2 sample, muscovite phase is also present. Simultaneous TG-DTA curves of all clay samples were obtained at three different heating rates 10, 15, and 20 °C min over the temperature range 30-1200 °C. It was found that the retention value of SO by S clay (2.744 mmol/g) was higher than those of K1 (0.144 mmol/g) and K2 (0.164 mmol/g) samples. The draw ratio employed had a prominent effect on the aspect ratio of the microfibrils produced, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy. The subsequent isotropization step between the T of the polymers created microfibrillar composites with randomly oriented short microfibrils of poly (ethylene terephthalate). The X ray diffraction patterns of the microfibrillar blends were different from those of corresponding composites although the polypropylene phase in both exhibited predominantly the presence of α crystallites. The crystallization of the polypropylene phase was affected by the orientation and diameter of the poly (ethylene terephthalate) microfibrils. The short microfibrils in the microfibrillar composites were not effectual in hastening the crystallization of polypropylene. The thermal decomposition studies revealed the capability of microfibrillar blends to delay the degradation better than the microfibrillar composites. The X-ray diffraction crystal structure of complex 2 shows a 2D polymeric chain - edbea(N5,O1)-Cu1-N1C1-Ni(CN)2-C4N6-Cu1-(N6,O2) edbea- in which the Cu centers are linked by two cyano and one edbea. The powder EPR spectrum of the complex 2 has shown that Cu ions are located in rhombically distorted octahedral sites. The magnetic properties of the coordination polymers have been studied in temperature range of 15-300 K. The magnetic behaviors investigation of complexes 1 and 2 indicated the presence of a very weak antiferromagnetic interaction. The samples were prepared by heating high purity powder mixtures of TeO2, WO3 and/or CdO to 800°C in a platinum crucible with a closed lid, holding for 30min and quenching in water bath. Differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques were used to characterize the thermal, phase and microstructural properties of the δ-TeO2 phase. The addition of CdO into the tellurite glasses increased the stability range of the δ-TeO2 phase up to higher temperature values and expanded the compositional δ-TeO2 formation range. The formation of δ-TeO2 phase in the binary systems was observed for samples containing 5–10mol% WO3 and 5–15mol% CdO. However, for the ternary TeO2–WO3–CdO system the formation of δ-TeO2 phase was determined in a wider compositional range. IR and X-ray studies have confirmed a bidentate fashion of coordination of the 2-hydroxymethylbenzimidazole to Zn(II) ion (through the nitrogen atom of heteroaromatic ring and oxygen atom of hydroxymethyl group). The zinc ion is hexacoordinated and the shape of polyhedron can be described as pseudo-octahedron (NO chromophore type). The decomposition process of studied Zn(II) and Cd(II) benzimidazole complexes in the air atmosphere proceeds in three or four main stages and traces structures of complexes. On the basis of the first DTG of the decompositions the thermal stability of the complexes follows the order: [CdL](NO)LEtOH < [CdL(NO)] < [ZnL](NO)LL′. As the final solid products of thermal decomposition suitable metal oxides are formed. The kinetic parameter of activation energy for crystallization (E) was obtained by the Owaza Johnson-Mehl-Avrami method. The results show that during the heat treatment, the intermediate phase of µ-cordierite initially precipitated from the glass matrix, and with the increasing temperature, it transformed to α-cordierite. The more the Fe2O3 content, the lower the crystallization peak temperature (Tp).But the lowering of Tp value did not mean that the value of E decreases correspondingly. The experimental results suggest that only with appropriate content (about 4.2 wt%), Fe2O3 can promote the crystallization of this glass effectively. The as-pyrolyzed products were annealed in N2 atmosphere at 1200–1850°C for 2h. The chemical composition and phase structure of the as-pyrolyzed and annealed ceramics were investigated by element analysis, XRD and FT-IR. The results show that all the ceramics exhibit excellent high temperature stability. They are fully amorphous to 1700°C, and only partial crystallization, giving a mixture of Si3N4, BN and SiC phases, is observed upon heating at 1850°C. The N2 pyrolyzed products show better stability than the NH3/N2 pyrolyzed products and have less tendency to crystalline at higher temperatures. Better retention of nitrogen at high temperatures is also observed for the N2 pyrolyzed products. The results showed that supersaturated solid solution and new intermetallic compound In3Sn were produced during melt-spinning technique not found under equilibrium conditions. It is also found that a small amount of In addition significantly lowers the melting point of the Sn–10wt.% Sb alloy and reduce the crystal size to ≈60nm. Also, tin–antimony solder doped with In exhibits good mechanical properties, Vickers hardness and mechanical strength due to refined microstructure. The pure and mixed solids were thermally treated at 300, 500, 750 and 1000°C. The thermal products at various calcination temperatures were characterized by means of thermal analyses (TG–DTG–DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron spin resonance (ESR) techniques. The catalytic activity of all solids was measured using hydrogen peroxide decomposition at 30, 40 and 50°C. The results revealed that pure basic copper carbonate decomposed to CuO at 300°C and to Cu2O at temperature above 950°C, where as pure ammonium vanadate decomposed to (NH4)2V6O16 and NH4V4O10 as an intermediate compound at 250 and 350°C before the formation of V2O5 at 450°C. CuO enhanced the formation of V2O5 at 300°C. A series of copper vanadate phases were detected, Cu5V2O10, Cu2V2O7 and Cu3V5O4, for the mixtures 3Cu:1V, 1Cu:1V and 1Cu:3V preheated at 750°C, respectively. These phases were formed as a result of solid–solid interactions between copper and vanadium oxides. The calcination temperature and the composition of the Cu–V mixtures affect the degree of crystallinity and pattern intensities of different phases detected at treatment temperatures ranged between 300 and 1000°C. The catalytic activity of mixed CuO–V2O5 was found to be greater than that of single oxides obtained at the same calcination temperatures. This might be attributed to increase in the concentration of active sites by creation of new ion pairs. No measurable catalytic activity was observed for all solids calcined at 750 and 1000°C. This might be attributed to restriction of catalytically active constituents. The structural and morphological evolutions in these powders are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD results have shown that the elemental powders Ti–Al–Si are progressively transformed into a nanocrystalline solid solution and amorphous phase during mechanical alloying. The results for the powder mixture of quaternary 58Ti–30Al–6Si–6C have shown that supersaturated solid solutions of Ti in nano- and submicro-scales are formed, while Ti5Si3 and TiC compounds are produced in the powder mixture of 50Ti–15Al–20Si–15C. These compositions may be used as distinct precursors for preparing in situ titanium aluminide composites. Investigations on thermal stability of 40h-milled quaternary powders have indicated that Ti5Si3 is first formed at a lower temperature followed by Al2Ti4C2 and TiC at an intermediate temperature (820°C). In the case of ternary system a stable Ti5Si3 phase is formed through a series of transitions when heated to 1200°C. All the above phases are stable at elevated temperatures. The homogeneity of the powder samples were repeatedly checked by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy to standardize the milling conditions. The best possible homogenized material was developed with the milling conditions of BPR 30:1, ball diameter 30mm, 400rpm and milling time of 15h. The electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power and thermal conductivity were measured in the temperature range 300–500K. It was found through these experiments that the composition with x =0.12 behaved in a normal semiconducting way, whereas the other two compositions (x =0.10 and 0.15) showed degenerate semiconductor behaviour. These features have been qualitatively explained from the band structure and interband scattering mechanisms. Thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction measurements showed that the obtained hybrids are amorphous materials of the nanocomposite type. The results highlighted the different influence of each of the metallic alkoxides on the hybrid structure. The material rupture temperature, associated with the degradation of the organic component, depends mainly on the TEOS content, whereas the inorganic component structural stability depends on the relative PrZr content in the alkoxides mixture. The thermal properties and microstructural development during heat treatments were investigated by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry, differential thermal analysis, and X-ray diffraction. The glass forming ability (GFA) and activation energy for crystallization have a distinct dependence on Mo content. Fe62C10B9Mo12Cr4W3 was the best glass former in this study, demonstrating a supercooled liquid region, ΔTx =51K, and an activation energy for crystallization, Q =453kJ/mol. The GFA of alloys in this system was governed by elastic strain optimization resulting directly from the variation in Mo content. Heat treatments were performed to demonstrate resistance to crystallization under typical processing conditions. Alloys in this system exhibited a three phased evolution during crystallization. A second set of heat treatments was performed to identify each phase. An analysis of phase evolution revealed a distinct dependence of phase evolution with stepwise substitution of Mo for Fe in this system. The chemical composition and the crystalline nature of the stone were verified using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and the stone was also analyzed using thermo gravimetric analysis and by differential thermal analysis. The microhardness values were almost constant around 1000 MNm−2 in the load range of 1.96 N–9.8 N. The values of fracture toughness and brittleness index for the stone in this load range was varying from 1.12 (0.307) MNm−3/2 to 1.48 (0.296) MNm−3/2 and 674.25 m−1/2 to 878.07 m−1/2 respectively. The density of the stone and the ultrasonic longitudinal wave velocity in the stone were found to be 1880 kgm−3 and 3399 ms−1 respectively indicating that the urinary stone under study was a compact one. The acoustic impedance and the dynamic modulus values were calculated as 6.39×106 kgm−2 s−1and 21.72 GNm−2 respectively. In the present work, Makrofol samples were irradiated using different fluences of 1MeV protons at the University of Surrey Ion Beam Center, UK. The structural modifications in the proton irradiated Makrofol samples have been studied as a function of fluence using different characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, differential thermal analysis and color difference studies. The proton irradiation in the fluence range led to a more compact structure of Makrofol polymer, which resulted in an improvement in its thermal stability with an increase in the activation energy of thermal decomposition. The melting temperature of the polymer, , was investigated to probe the crystalline domains of the polymer. At a fluence range of , the defect generated destroys the crystalline structure, thereby reducing the melting temperature. Further, the transmission of these samples in the wavelength range of , as well as any color changes, was studied. The color intensity was greatly increased with increasing the proton fluence, and was accompanied by a significant increase in the red and yellow color components. The resultant effect of neutron irradiation on the thermal properties of PM-355 has been investigated using thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). The onset temperature of decomposition T o and thermal activation energy of decomposition E a were calculated, results indicating that the PM-355 detector decomposes in two weight loss stages. The variation of transition temperatures with neutron energy has been determined using differential thermal analysis (DTA). The results indicate the PM-355 thermograms to be characterized by the appearance of an endothermic peak due to melting. Melting temperature was found to be dependent on the neutron energy. In addition, structural property studies using X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy were performed on both non-irradiated PM-355 samples and all of the samples that were irradiated. The results indicate that both the degree of ordering and the absorbance of the PM-355 polymer are dependent on neutron energy. The attention was mainly directed to the role of quartz content (<1, 49, and 72wt.%) in the modification of dolomite. The mechanically activated samples were studied by X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy and determination of the quadratic square mean diameter. The increased quartz content accelerated the mechanochemical deformation and amorphization of dolomite phase. While the amorphization reduced primarily the relative peak area of the (015) reflection, the deformation mostly increased the lattice strain in the (104) lattice plane. After grinding the dolomite/quartz mixtures, the thermal decomposition of dolomite showed a four- or three-step weight loss, instead of the original two- or one-step one. The mechanical activation of the mixtures produced a favourable state for the formation of calcium magnesium silicates at temperature even as low as 880°C. The crystalline structures of the nanocomposite multilayered films can be tuned by controlling the composition, polymer Mw and the water content. We study the concentration, polymer Mw and humidity dependence of polymer crystallinity in selected nanocomposite multilayered films. Results show that the exact sample preparation and history are important in controlling structure and properties and in developing new materials. Complementary microscopy is used to monitor the structural changes. The precursor Mg oxalate gel was characterised by morphology, pore size distribution and differential thermal analysis, Fourier transformation infrared, TEM, SEM and X-ray diffraction analysis. The TEM studies on this system are reported for the first time depicting a unique morphology. A comparison in the morphology and the dielectric constant values of the sol–gel derived MgO powder was carried out with MgO powder obtained by Mg ribbon oxidation process. The sol–gel derived MgO powder was characterised by dielectric constant measurement in the compacted form and it was observed to exhibit a dielectric constant value, quite matching with the polycrystalline MgO in thin film form. The La3.5Ru4O13 compound is stable in oxidizing and neutral atmospheres (N2 with 10 ppm O2), while La2RuO5 is partially reduced in a neutral atmosphere to form La2RuO4.6. In a reducing atmosphere both compounds decompose into metallic Ru and La2O3. The thermal expansion coefficients of La2RuO5 and La3.5Ru4O13 at 800 °C are 11.2 × 10-6 K-1 and 9.3 × 10-6 K-1, respectively. The specific electrical resistivity for La3.5Ru4O13 is relatively independent of temperature and is 2 × 10-2 Ω cm at 800 °C, while for La2RuO5 it decreases with increasing temperature and is 1 Ω cm at 800 °C. The thermal properties of these samples were measured in the temperature range from r.t. to 900 K. The average values of the thermal conductivity of these investigated samples lie in the range from 0.4· 10-3 to 2.01 · 10-3 cal cm-1 s-1 K-1. This means that these samples are considered as thermal insulating materials. The thermogravimetric analysis (TG) confirmed that these investigated samples are dry rocks. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed that these rock samples have a crystalline phase, the peaks of XRD have a small change in their location as a result of heat treatment. This behaviour was attributed to the oxidation and firing of some minerals after the heat treatment. Their dimensionalities and formulas are: 1D: Fe(OPD) 2 SO 4 (1); 2D: Fe(MPD) 2 SO 4 (2), Co(MPD) 2 SO 4 (3); 3D: Fe(PPD)SO 4 (4) and Co(PPD)SO 4 (5). The crystal structures were determined using data from X-ray powder diffraction measurements (XRPD). The purity and morphology of the compounds were studied by elemental analyses and SEM EDX investigations and their thermal stability was determined by thermogravimetric (TG) and temperature-dependent XRPD techniques. Strandberg-type phosphomolybdate anions are metal-oxide clusters with general formula [H n P 2 Mo 5 O 23 ](6−n)− (n = 0, 1, 2). The protonation/deprotonation of this anion affects its redox properties. Herein, we explain how to select the organic counterions to direct the synthesis towards the non-protonated or protonated anion. The method is illustrated with the synthesis of two new compounds (C 5 H 16 N 2) 3 [P 2 Mo 5 O 23 ]·4H 2 O (1) and (CH 6 N) 4 [H 2 P 2 Mo 5 O 23 ].CH 5 N·4H 2 O (2). It is found that after annealing at 500°C for 4h an intermartensitic transformation, seven-layered orthorhombic martensite (7M) → five-layered tetragonal martensite (5M), appears in polycrystalline Ni52.5Mn23.7Ga23.8 alloy quenched from 800°C, where the sequence of phase transformations is austenite phase (A) → 7M→5M during cooling and 5M→7M→A during heating. The intermartensitic transformation is an independent phase transformation, but the critical transition temperatures and the transformation temperature ranges of 7M→5M are strongly affected by the martensitic transformation. CZO heated in microwave heating system for 1h yielded the stabilized zirconia in the cubic form at 400°C. Same precursor (CZO) heated in resistance heated furnace for 1h yielded pure CSZ at 800°C. Thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction techniques were used to characterize the precursor and optimize the conditions for microwave processing. BET surface areas of CSZ powders prepared by conventional and microwave heating method at 800 and 400°C are 3.28 and 4.46m2 g−1, respectively. SEM investigations determined that, the average size of crystallites of the BaFe 11.1 In 0.9 O 19 sample is d ¯ = 5 μm. The X-ray diffraction investigations showed that, the structure of the sample corresponds to the hexagonal symmetry with P6 3 /mmc space group. An analysis of raman spectra at high temperatures determined that, there is no phase transition in the temperature range T = 20–450 °C. The lower boundary value is T ≥ 100 °C for starting thermal flux, the oxidation on mass kinetics and decomposition effects were determined from thermal analysis of the BaFe 11.1 In 0.9 O 19 sample. Two vanillin derivatives 4-(heptyloxy)-3-methoxybenzaldehyde (L1) and 4-(decyloxy)-3-methoxybenzaldehyde (L2) were obtained from the reaction of the vanillin with 1-bromoheptane or 1-bromodecane in DMF reaction media, respectively. The vanillin derivatives L1 and L2 have been characterized by the 1H–13C NMR, FTIR and mass spectral techniques. Single crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction studies were grown by recrystallization of a chloroform solutions of the compounds. There are phenyl-phenyl stacking (edge to edge) interactions within the structures. Thermal analysis data (DSC) revealed that compounds do not show any liquid crystalline character. The electrochemical behaviours of the organic compounds L1 and L2 were investigated and all redox processes in the 100–1000 mV/s scan rates are irreversible.
