The difficulty of dyeing is a disturbing problem for the various application of polyimide fabrics. Alkali treatment has been widely used as a preliminary step before dyeing, denoted as a two‐bath method. With more attention being paid to energy resources, this work aims to explore more economical and environmentally friendly dyeing technology, combining the alkali treatment and the dyeing process together, named a one‐bath method. Surprisingly, the K/S value of the one‐bath dyed fabric is much higher than that of the two‐bath sample, in which the red colour value is enhanced by 59.9% for the one‐bath sample. As for the effect of dyeing on the physical properties, the two‐step method has been demonstrated to exert more severe damage on the fibre, with lower crystallinity and tensile strength. To explain such results, it is deduced that when alkali is added together with dyes, it can play a bridge role between the dyes and the fibre, anchoring the dyes wherever the alkali can permeate. Most traditional synthetic dyes and functional reagents used in silk fabrics are not biodegradable and lack green environmental protection. Natural dyes have attracted more and more attention because of their coloring, functionalization effects, and environmental benefits. In this study, natural dyes were extracted from lac and used for coloring and functionalization in silk fabrics without any other harmful dyes. The extraction conditions were studied and analyzed by the univariate method. The optimal extraction process was that the volume ratio of ethanol to water was 60:40 with a solid–liquid ratio of 1:10, and reacting under the neutrality condition for 1 h at 70 °C. Silk fabric can be dyed dark owing to the certain lifting property of lac. After being dyed by Al3+ post-medium, the levels of the washing fastness, light fastness, and friction fastness of silk fabric are all above four with excellent fastness. The results show that the dyed silk fabrics have good UV protection, antioxidation, and antibacterial properties. The UV protection coefficient UPF is 42.68, the antioxidant property is 98.57%, and the antibacterial property can reach more than 80%. Therefore, the dyeing and functionalization of silk fabrics by utilizing naturally lac dyes show broad prospects in terms of the application of green sustainable dyeing and functionalization. The textile industry is one of the most important industries in the European Union. The main environmental problems of the textile industry are the high water consumption, the generated pollution, the variety of chemicals used and the high energy demand. Recently, adsorbents with a large specific surface area and low weight, such as aerogels, have attracted great interest as promising materials for removing dyes from polluted water. Cellulose aerogels are inexpensive and non-toxic. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were chosen as the best method to describe the performance of the adsorbent. In this study, the adsorption efficiency of Congo red, Naphthol green B, Rhodamine B and Methylene blue were determined by using an adsorbent synthesized from paper and cardboard waste. The total organic carbon concentration was chosen as an indicator of the concentration of the dyes in the solutions. The aerogel capsules had 5% cellulose content. It was found that the adsorption capacity of the aerogel in the solutions of Congo red varied from 0.028 mg/g to 14.483 mg/g; in the solutions of Naphthol green B, from 0.013 mg/g to 7.698 mg/g; in the solutions of Rhodamine B, from 0.020 mg/g to 8.768 mg/g; and in the solutions of Methylene blue, from 0.024 mg/g to 13.538 mg/g. The present study uses biogenic fabricated ZnO and ZnO-ME nanomaterials to extract sulphur black (SB) dye from textile effluents. In this study, response surface methodology-central composite design (RSM-CCD) was used to optimize the batch adsorption experiments instead of standard one-variable-at-a-time method. The optimum parameters for removing textile dye with desirability of 1 were 22 mg adsorbent dosage at room temperature (30°C) and 137 min of contact time and the colour adsorption efficiency was found to be 67% and 76% of ZnO and ZnO-ME nanomaterials respectively. Validation of the model showed that the estimated response was consistent with the experimental results. The model demonstrated excellent fit for SB dye removal utilizing ZnO and ZnO-ME nanomaterials, which had adjusted R2 values of 0.9991 and 0.9952 and predicted R² values of 0.9961 and 0.9972 respectively. The optimization of pretreatment parameters is one of the most important factors for the successful dyeing of textile materials. The aim of this study was to investigate the most effective way of pre-treating cellulose based lyocell knitted fabric in order to achieve an optimal result when dyeing it with reactive dyestuffs. This research investigates the effects of pretreatment by exhaust method on lyocell knitted fabric, which is analyzed using five different recipes. Pretreatment techniques that are being used are mild pretreatment, hot wash without detergent, hot wash with detergent, causticization, and hot wash with causticization. Pretreated and untreated lyocell fabric is dyed with bi-functional reactive dyestuffs in a shade of 1%, to produce color. Three key factors are considered in this research work: optimum pretreatment technique, causticization time selection, and causticization concentration selection. In order to optimize the pretreatment technique, 16 trials are performed by varying the time and concentration. Compared to other pretreatment techniques, causticization is the best for dyeing lyocell fabric with reactive dyes. Additionally, causticization treatment is observed to have the best performance on lyocell fabric when applied for 30 min. The optimum concentration of NaOH for causticizing lyocell fabric is 3 mol/l, as determined by the results. Characterising synthetic dyes on heritage textiles represents a relatively recent research frontier, which aims to obtain new information about the evolution of textile manufacturing and industrial chemistry. Whilst spectral enhancement or amplification methods are often considered a requirement for the Raman analysis of textile dyes, this work highlights the potential of standard Raman spectroscopy for the non-invasive analysis of synthetically dyed fibres. In this research, Raman spectroscopy was used for the chemical characterisation of early 20th century synthetic dyes, in both powder form and on dyed fibres. The dyes were produced by the Italian company Azienda Coloranti Nazionali e Affini (ACNA) and housed in the Sapienza University Museum of Chemistry. The investigation first employed literature research into the ACNA's commercial nomenclature. This information was used to hypothesise likely molecular structures of the dyes, pointing towards the azo dye class. The application of Raman spectroscopy confirmed these hypotheses and the high-quality spectra collected provided structural information about the dye molecules. Spectral features of azo-groups, aromatic moieties, and substituents were observable in spectra. Comparison with a Raman spectrum of wool allowed confident dye signal attribution, and some spectra displayed features linked to changes in the fibre during the dyeing process. Combining literature research and Raman vibrational information proved a powerful non-invasive approach for the characterisation of synthetic dyes, allowing molecular identification of some colorants and structural information for most. Standard Raman spectroscopy may provide a widely applicable, non-invasive method for acquiring information about synthetically dyed historical and artistic textiles in future research. The knitted cap was the ubiquitous and most visible garment men wore throughout early modern society, from apprentices to royals. Documentary evidence also suggests that red was a conventional color for specific garments in the sixteenth century, including knitted caps. However, most knitted caps in museum collections are now a muddy brown characteristic of archaeological textiles, and their original color has seldom been studied. Considering the potential of microspectrofluorimetry for analyzing dyes in ancient textiles and manuscript illuminations, this technique was tested on six caps dating from the fifteenth to sixteenth centuries examined in the Knitting in Early Modern Europe research project. The colors are in good preservation condition in two samples, whereas the others show extensive degradation. The emission and excitation spectra acquired allowed the identification of the similarities and differences between samples, grouping them into different dye sources such as cochineal-based and madder-based (RED1 and RED2, respectively). For the coif cap and split-brimmed cap in good condition, analysis through HPLC–MS confirmed the sources of the dyes as Rubia tinctorum and cochineal. It also disclosed the source for another coif cap as Kermes vermilio (RED4). The other knitted items are possibly madder-based (RED3), but HPLC–MS did not allow confirmation of the madder source. The continuing development of a database of excitation and emission spectra acquired from historical textiles, such as the knitted caps, will support the identification of dye sources and specific formulations. Although this technique demands a comprehensive database of references for comparison with the complex signals identified, it allows for rapid spectra acquisition, providing tremendously valuable information. The combination of a nanofibre net and textile support represents an interesting composite capable of conferring various properties. Nanofibres are so thin that they can be easily damaged by human touch. In this study, we hypothesised that dyeing nanofibres with different colours from their textile supports would result in a colour difference upon their degradation, providing evidence that the composite has been touched and acting as a touch sensor. Two different methods were studied: directly inserting the dye into the polymer via electrospinning or creating a coloured liquid emulsion encapsulated by the polymer via electrospinning. Two black dyes were studied. Colour index (CI) Acid Black 194 was added directly to polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the polymer. Sage oil was used for CI Solvent Black 3. The nanofibre nets were conveniently electrospun on a white polyester fabric; the fabrics were then characterised by colour coordinate analysis, FTIR, and SEM. The results showed that the dyed solution in oil was encapsulated, and the black colour could only be observed when rubbed, whereas the dyed polymer showed a black colour that was removed when rubbed. Therefore, the hypothesis was confirmed, and both samples demonstrated the desired touch sensor behaviour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study invested the impact of the operational parameters (pH, Current Density (CD) and Electrode Gap (EG)) on the sludge generated after electrocoagulation treatment of textile dyeing effluent (TDE) by studying sludge settleability and filterability characteristics of EC generated sludge. Electrocoagulation treatment evaluated at laboratory scale with aluminum as electrode material at operating condition of parameters of pH, CD and EG. (pH-5.5, CD-105.12 A/m2 and EG-2.5 cm). Under these operating conditions, maximum COD reduction was achieved 88.45 % and maximum color reduction was about 66.92 %. Settling characteristics of TDE was studied by sludge volume index (SVI) and Centrifugal settleability index (CSI). From disposal point of view, filterability characteristic was also studied by simple gravity filtration method. Specific cake resistance, α (m/kg), filter medium resistance, Rm(m−1) was also studied. The specific cake resistance was found in the order of 38.4 × 1013 >34.13 × 1013 >22.25 × 1013 >11.19 × 1013 >7.30 × 1013 (m/kg) at the pH 9.5, 7.5, 1.5, 5.5 and 3.5 respectively. While filter medium resistance was found to be 111.22 × 109, 92.28 × 109, 82.33 × 109, 41.38 × 109 and 13.87 × 109 m−1 at pH 7.5, 9.5, 3.5, 5.5 and 1.5 respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The modification of silk fabrics was studied. The objective was to improve the dyes absorption properties of the silk fabric. The silk fabric was grafted with diallyldimethylammonium chloride at room temperature using a redox initiator of potassium persulfate and N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine. It was found that the %graft yield increased with increase in the diallyldimethylammonium chloride concentration, polymerization time, and concentration of the cross-linking agent. The diallyldimethylammonium chloride improved the hydrophility of the silk fabric. The acid and reactive dyes absorption of the silk fabrics was investigated. The dyes absorption of the modified silk depended on the type of dyes. Also, the dyes absorption tended to increase with increase in the contact time, polymerization time between the silk fabric and the diallyldimethylammonium chloride, monomer and N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide concentrations, and concentration of dyes. This study aimed to comprehensively assess the performance of HKUST-1, a metal–organic framework (MOF), as an adsorbent for various classes of textile dyes, including direct, acid, basic, and vinyl sulfonic reactive dyes. Real-world dyeing scenarios were simulated using carefully selected combinations of dyes to evaluate HKUST-1's effectiveness in treating dyeing process effluents. The results demonstrated that HKUST-1 exhibited highly efficient adsorption capabilities across all dye classes. Isolated direct dyes showed the best adsorption outcomes, with adsorption percentages exceeding 75% and reaching 100% for direct blue dye (Sirius Blue K-CFN). Basic dyes exhibited adsorption levels of nearly 85% for blue dye (Astrazon Blue FG), while the adsorption performance for the yellow dye (Yellow GL-E) was the poorest. The adsorption of dyes in combined systems followed a similar trend to that of isolated dyes, with the trichromy of direct dyes yielding the best results. Kinetic studies indicated that the adsorption of dyes followed a pseudo-second-order model, with nearly instantaneous adsorption observed in all cases. Furthermore, most dyes adhered to the Langmuir isotherm, further confirming the effectiveness of the adsorption process. The exothermic nature of the adsorption process was evident. Importantly, the study demonstrated the feasibility of reusing the HKUST-1, highlighting its potential as an exceptional adsorbent for removing hazardous textile dyes from effluents. The dyeing and finishing step represents a clear hotspot in the textile supply chain as the wet processing stages require significant amounts of water, energy, and chemicals. In order to tackle environmental issues, natural dyes are gaining attention from researchers as more sustainable alternatives to synthetic ones. This review discusses the topic of natural dyes, providing a description of their main features and differences compared to synthetic dyes, and encompasses a summary of recent research in the field of natural dyes with specific reference to the following areas of sustainable innovation: extraction techniques, the preparation of substrates, the mordanting process, and the dyeing process. The literature review showed that promising new technologies and techniques have been successfully employed to improve the performance and sustainability of natural dyeing processes, but several limitations such as the poor fastness properties of natural dyes, their low affinity with textiles substrates, difficulties in the reproducibility of shades, as well as other factors such as cost-effectiveness considerations, still prevent industry from adopting natural dyes on a larger scale and will require further research in order to expand their use beyond niche applications. To date, it is still not possible to obtain exhaustive information about organic materials in cultural heritage without sampling. Nonetheless, when studying unique objects with invaluable artistic or historical significance, preserving their integrity is a priority. In particular, organic dye identification is of significant interest for history and conservation research, but it is still hindered by analytes' low concentration and poor fastness. In this work, a minimally invasive approach for dye identification is presented. The procedure is designed to accompany noninvasive analyses of inorganic substances for comprehensive studies of complex cultural heritage matrices, in compliance with their soundness. Liquid extraction of madder, turmeric, and indigo dyes was performed directly from paint layers and textiles. The extraction was supported by hydrogels, which themselves can undergo multitechnique analyses in the place of samples. After extraction, Ag colloid pastes were applied on the gels for SERS analyses, allowing for the identification of the three dyes. For the HPLC-MS/MS analyses, re-extraction of the dyes was followed by a clean-up step that was successfully applied on madder and turmeric. The colour change perceptivity after extraction was measured with colorimetry. The results showed ΔE values mostly below the upper limit of rigorous colour change, confirming the gentleness of the procedure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The finishing of yarns by bobbin dyeing is of key importance in the value chain of home and apparel textiles. In the bobbin dyeing process, yarn bobbins are placed on dye spindles and passed through with dye liquor. If the winding process parameters are selected unfavorably, the density of the winding package is inhomogeneous. The inhomogeneous density distribution leads to an inhomogeneous flow of dye liquid through the package and, hence, to dyeing defects. In order to minimize dyeing defects and to reduce set-up times, we present a simulation-based parameter recommendation for cross-winding machines in this paper. We use a kinematic model of the winding process combined with an empirical model for the package diameter to optimize the package density distribution. We introduce a criterion to avoid patterning defects and adapt winding settings. For bobbins with Nm 34 Co yarn, the homogeneity of the density was improved and the color deviation was reduced by up to 50% due to these simulation-based setting suggestions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on Japanese sophora tree, also known as pagoda tree or Chinese scholar tree which is a tall deciduous tree in the pea or legume family that can reach several meter in height. Topics include considered the tree does not begin flowering until it is 30 to 40 years old, after which inflorescences of creamy white flowers, about 1 cm long, appear as clusters at the ends of branches.

Hyperspectral imaging has emerged as a promising analytical method of artwork due to its potential in combining non-invasive analytical capabilities and imaging allowing the survey of the entire (or of a large area of the) surface of an artwork, which is a highly significant application for historic tapestries. This project deployed a high-resolution ClydeHSI Art Scanner, which was used with both a push-broom visible to very-near infrared (VNIR; 400–1000 nm) and near infrared (NIR; 900–1700 nm) hyperspectral cameras. Initial testing focused on the characterisation and mapping of the different materials used on historic tapestries (wool, silk, metal threads). To facilitate the dye characterisation, a collection of wool and silk samples dyed with recipes based on medieval practices was used. The samples measured using the system and the data collected formed an external reference library including the type of the natural dyes and mordants used during their production. The outcomes of the on-site deployment of this analytical instrumentation for the characterisation and analysis of 16th century tapestries on display at Hampton Court Palace will be discussed. In order to fabricate colorimetric textile sensors detecting gas phase of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), 11 kinds of direct dyes were investigated for 13 types of VOCs. Direct Violet 51 was chosen for its best sensing performance both instrumentally and visibly. Direct Violet 51 exhibited the change of color strength and color hue by exposure VOCs. The dyed cotton fabrics detected polar VOCs well, especially N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). The colorimetric cotton-based textile sensor dyed with Direct Violet 51 exhibited approximately 10 of color difference (ΔE) under 10 ppm DMF gas within 100 min, and the maximum absorption wavelength was shifted from 560 nm to 530 nm. The sensing mechanisms could be summarized in three factors: solvatochromism and aggregative characteristics from the point of view of dye, and adsorption amount of VOCs for fabric. The traditional shirt ("ie") is the most well-known element of Romanian anonymous textile art. Apart from aesthetic and utilitarian roles, it has strong symbolic significance, mainly through the colours used for decoration. Very recently, the traditional shirt with decoration over the shoulder ("ia cu altiță") was introduced as a Romanian identity element as part of UNESCO heritage. Depending on the ethnographic area, the traditional shirt with decoration over the shoulder has acquired special expressive particularities over time. Particularly relevant is that from Valea Hârtibaciului, an area of Transylvania in the very centre of Romania. Although sober in appearance with large fields of white plain weave, it is discreetly decorated with elaborated embroidery on the sleeve bracelets, over the shoulders and neck. Even the colour range and decoration motifs remain unchanged in time, evolution in the materials used and a subtle transition from natural hues to more strident alternatives were observed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. For the present study, samples were taken from representative objects in the collections of the ASTRA Museum, Sibiu and Ethnographical Museum, Brasov, documented as belonging to the area of Valea Hârtibaciului and dated in the museum archives as from the late 19th and early 20th century. The textile materials and the dyes used in the shirts' embroidery were monitored. Fibre identification was made by optical microscopy and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR). Dye analysis was performed by liquid chromatography coupled with UV-Vis (diode array) detection, while some of the samples were also analysed by liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometric detection (LC-DAD-MS). Dyes were extracted from the fibres by acid hydrolysis. Identification was based on data collected on standards, dyes and dyed fibres. For the early synthetic dyes, a dedicated library of references was built, which includes information relative to the most relevant representatives used between 1850 and 1900, the 'Helmut Schweppe list'. According to the study, in the last decades of the 19th century, natural dye sources such as dyer's broom, madder, Mexican cochineal and indigoid dyes were gradually replaced by early synthetic dyes: fuchsine (1856), methyl violet (1861), synthetic alizarin (1871), brilliant green (1879), azo flavine 3R (1880), rhodamine B (1887) and others. This paper investigates the feasibility of dyeing viscose rayon fabric with an anthocyanin solution extracted from H. sabdariffa L. calyces. For eco-friendly dyeing and improvement of the natural dye's affinity to fabrics, natural mordants instead of traditional metallic mordants were applied. The effect of natural mordant types and mordanting procedures (pre-, meta- and aftermordanting) was evaluated by colorimetric measurement (CIE Lab and K/S values) and color fastness. Four natural mordants including alginate, walnut hull, lemon peel, and pinecone were used. The results show that the light and wash fastness (1-2 degrees according to the blue scale and the grayscale) of the un-mordanted viscose fabric were very low and unsuitable. Natural mordants, especially walnut husk and alginate, could improve color strength and color fastness. The light fastness value of the dyed fabric was improved, reaching a value of 5-6 in the presence of walnut, lemon, and pinecone mordants. The highest wash and light fastness was obtained when the aftermordanting method was used. Also, the use of walnut husk mordant increased the color strength and decreased the lightness of the dyed fabrics, as compared to other natural mordants, in all three methods of mordanting. A novel thickening agent from wild taro corms was investigated in the preparation of the printing paste for the screen-printing of silk fabric with acid dye. The concentrations of thickening agent, acid dyestuff, and citric acid and steaming fixation time were explored. Printed silk fabric quality was evaluated by determining different parameters: color values (L*, a*, b*), color strength (K/S), color fastness, and physical properties, whereas print paste quality was evaluated by measuring the viscosity. The results revealed that the printing paste, comprising the thickening agent prepared from the modified starch of wild taro corms, can be applied for printing silk fabric using acid dye. The fastness properties of the printed samples were found to be fair to good. The printed fabric also had decreased tensile and tear strength compared to the original fabric. An increase in stiffness (bending length) of printed silk fabric also occurred. The overall study showed that using the new proposed thickening agent was confirmed at the semi-industrial scale. For conventional fabric subjected to the same washing and fabric dyed with the innovative method, the conventional fabric remained darker and removed the sulfur dye later. One of the important processes for denim fabric products is the washing process, a procedure that provides sewn garments with different colors and effects by washing them in special washing machines according to certain methods and techniques. Dyeing of irradiated silk and wool fabrics using irradiated Acid violet 3b dye solution of 2-7 pH Salt as an exhausting agent is an excellent auxiliary to be employed during the dyeing of natural fabric for getting good colorant yield (K/S) onto fabric (Tania and Millat 2017). In this research, Chinese herb Sargentodoxa cuneata was investigated as a natural dyestuff to give novel ultraviolet resistance to silk fabrics. The colorant was prepared using sodium hydroxide as extraction solvent, and the properties of the colorant were characterized using fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and UV-vis spectrophotometric. The functionalized silk fabric was obtained by a typical dyeing process using the prepared Sargentodoxa cuneata extraction (SCE). The effects of dyeing pH, temperature, and time on dyeing properties of silk fabric were investigated. The dyed silk fabric showed excellent UV protection property as well as excellent washing durability. This investigation provides a useful strategy to develop a new class of Chinese herbs with valuable use and silk materials with functional performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Original work showed the composition of the dyes and the antimicrobial/UV protective properties of a series of dyes obtained in our laboratories over the past twelve years in an easy way using microwave technology and their comparisons with conventional methods. The results we obtained clearly indicated that by using the microwave strategy, we were able to synthesize the new disperse dyes in minutes and with a much higher productivity when compared to the traditional methods, which took a much longer time, sometimes up to hours. We also introduced ultrasonic technology in dyeing polyester fabrics at 80 °C for an environmentally friendly approach, which was an alternative to traditional dyeing methods at 100 °C; we obtained a much higher color depth than traditional dyeing methods reaching 102.9%. We presented both the biological activity of the prepared new dyes and the fastness properties and clearly indicated that these dyes possess biological activity and high fastness properties.We presented through the results that when dyeing polyester fabrics with some selected disperse dyes, the color strength of polyester fabrics dyed at high temperatures was greater than the color strength of polyester fabrics dyed at low temperatures by 144%, 186%, 265% and 309%. Finally, we presented that a ZnO or TiO2 NPs post-dyeing treatment of polyester fabrics is promising strategy for producing polyester fabrics possess multifunction like self-cleaning property, high light fastness, antimicrobial and anti-ultraviolet properties. [Display omitted] • SMS of Agaricus bisporus and its aqueous extract remove textile dyes from water. • Non-water-extractable SMS compounds facilitate optimal removal of textile dyes. • Enzymatic and non-enzymatic activities in SMS remove textile dyes. The textile industry discharges up to 5 % of their dyes in aqueous effluents. Here, use of spent mushroom substrate (SMS) of commercial white button mushroom production and its aqueous extract, SMS tea, was assessed to remove textile dyes from water. A total of 30–90 % and 5–85 % of the dyes was removed after a 24 h incubation in SMS and SMS tea, respectively. Removal of malachite green and remazol brilliant blue R was similar in SMS and its tea. In contrast, removal of crystal violet, orange G, and rose bengal was higher in SMS, explained by sorption to SMS and by the role of non-water-extractable SMS components in discoloration. Heat-treating SMS and its tea, thereby inactivating enzymes, reduced dye removal to 8–58 % and 0–31 %, respectively, indicating that dyes are removed by both enzymatic and non-enzymatic activities. This study introduces an innovative method utilizing Cu-doped graphitic carbon nitride (Cu-GCN) photocatalyst for the effective removal of dye pollutants such as methylene blue (D-MB) and Rhodamine B (D-RhB) from textile industry wastewater. The findings demonstrate that Cu-GCN achieves impressive degradation efficiency of 86.9 and 75.1 % for D-MB and D-RhB, respectively. Notably, the decomposition rate constants (k) exhibit an inverse relationship with pollutant concentrations. Specifically, the k value of D-MB and D-RhB using Cu-GCN increased from 0.010 to 0.023 min−1 and 0.009 to 0.022 min−1, respectively, with decreasing concentrations from 100 to 5 mg L−1. Besides, the decomposition efficiency of D-MB and D-RhB by Cu-GCN shows enhancements of 15.2 and 13.5 %, respectively, with a rise in solution pH from 5.0 to 9.0. Within 60 min of reaction time, Cu-GCN exhibits good decomposition efficiency of 69.1 % for D-MB and 55.3 % for D-RhB in textile wastewater samples. We also explore the comparative advantages and limitations of utilizing the photocatalysis process for the degradation of D-MB and D-RhB. This work offers valuable insights into the potential of Cu-GCN as a promising photocatalyst that can be further developed for effectively removing various pollutants from textile wastewater. Future developments in the printing and dyeing industry will involve greenisation and personalisation. Less/no water digital technology has drawn much attention over traditional printing and dyeing for reducing carbon and emissions. Based on the solubility parameter difference between disperse dyes and monomers, divinyl polysiloxane modified polyacrylate (PSMA) with the directional migration effect for disperse dyes was prepared herein via mini-emulsion polymerisation. PSMA was used as wash-free polymer additive in the digital jet dyeing of polyester fabrics with disperse dyes, which yielded wash-free dyed fabrics with high color yield and color fastness. The results showed that PSMA achieved the optimum overall performance at a molar ratio of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane to 1,3-divinyltetramethyldisiloxane 44:1 and divinyl polysiloxane dosage of 4 wt%. PSMA had the best tensile properties, good flexibility, certain hydrophobicity and high directional migration of disperse dyes. When the PSMA dosage was 9 wt% in the wash-free ink, the front and back color yield of the wash-free dyed fabric were 18.23 and 13.56, respectively. Compared with the fabric dyed with pure liquid disperse red, the front color yield of the wash-free dyed fabric increased by about 35.2 % and the back color yield had a little change. Its color fastness to dry/wet rubbing were improved from grade 3 to 4 and from grade 2–3 to 3, respectively. The handle of the wash-free dyed fabric basically maintained the level of original fabric. Traditional coloration and functionalization of textiles are highly energy-consuming, time ineffective, and require many chemicals. To overcome the drawbacks, cost-effective and eco-friendly natural dyeing and finishing have become an urgent demand. Herein, gardenia yellow, a natural dye, is extracted from Gardeniae fructus seeds and used for the coloration of organic cotton fabrics (OCFs). In addition, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized in-situ on the surface of the OCFs, where gardenia yellow serves as a reducing and stabilizing agent. Optimization of the process parameters (AgNO3 conc., gardenia yellow conc., solution pH, and reaction time) for the yield of AgNPs and subsequent fixation of nanoparticles on the OCFs surface were controlled by Taguchi design of experiments. All parameters were tested in a specified range at four levels on the color strength (K/S) and color difference (ΔE) value. Structural characterization of optimized samples revealed that the AgNPs are nanometer size, spherical shapes, evenly dispersed, and firmly attached to the fiber surfaces by molecular force or double networking capabilities of plant phytochemicals. Color properties demonstrate an even shade due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of AgNPs with brilliant color strength. Functional properties exposed that the in-situ synthesis of AgNPs significantly enhanced the UV resistance and antibacterial activity (against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) of the OCFs. Overall, this technique of OCF coloration and functionalization by avoiding traditional chemicals including mordants, binders, crosslinkers, finishing, or coating agents offers the desired efficiency and safe product for practical application.
