Textile coloration is a complex process involving the interaction of dye molecules with fibers in a dye bath. Synthetic dyes pose environmental hazards, leading to increased interest in natural dyes sourced from plants, animals, and minerals. However, natural dyes often require mordants for application to textiles. Despite their eco‐friendliness, natural dyes can exhibit poor wash fastness on fabrics, necessitating further research to enhance their performance. This study investigates the use of mahogany sawdust extract as a natural dye for cotton coloration, focusing on the enhancement of fastness properties through metallic mordants and associated environmental risks. Mahogany sawdust, rich in flavonoids and tannins, shows promise as a sustainable alternative to synthetic dyes. The dyeing process involves the extraction of natural dyes from sawmill bio‐waste and subsequent application onto cotton fabrics using various metallic mordants. Evaluation of colorfastness properties, color strength, color coordinates, tensile strength, FTIR, and SEM analysis provides insights into the dye‐fiber interactions and fabric properties. Environmental risk assessment considers metal exhaustion onto fabric surfaces, residual metal concentrations in mordant baths, and metal content in dyeing wastewater. Overall, this study contributes to the development of sustainable dyeing processes and highlights the importance of environmental considerations in textile coloration. The quest for cleaner environments is a global concern. Hence, the investigation of degradation of the indigo carmine dye (IC) with peroxydisulphate ion in an aqueous sulphuric acid system with a view to understanding its kinetic degradation and mechanism. The degradation depicts first‐order kinetics in [S2O82−] and [IC], and the degradation mole ratio of IC: S2O82− is 1:1. The degradation rate is dependent on the change in ionic strength and medium permittivity of the system. Also, added ions (NH4+ and NO3−) influence the degradation rate of the dye which further supported the outcome of the change in ionic strength. Free radical participation is ruled out. The experimental rate law is given as (Kk3[H+])[IC][S2O82−]. Owing to the absence of detectable intermediates in the degradation process, an outer‐sphere mechanism is proposed. It was aimed to determine the specific resource use and reduction potential profiles in various textile sub-sectors (cotton woven fabric dyeing-finishing, wool woven fabric dyeing-finishing, synthetic woven fabric dyeing-finishing, cotton knitted fabric, synthetic knit fabric dyeing-finishing, non-woven fabric, dyeing-finishing of knitted fabric). The main focus was to elucidate opportunities for sustainability in terms of decreasing resource utilization in the textile sector. On-site surveys and detailed data collection studies were carried out at 150 textile facilities. Average specific values for water, auxiliary chemicals, dyestuff, electricity, and steam consumptions, and related reduction potentials were calculated and compared within facilities and sub-sectors. The minimum specific resource consumption values reported in the Best Available Techniques Reference Document (BREF) for the textile industry and data of similar facilities from the literature were evaluated and used. A detailed environmental performance profile of the Turkish textile sector in terms of resource usage and reduction potential was generated. The highest specific water consumption was found in the wool-woven fabric sub-sector (345 ± 262 L/kg product). Although the specific auxiliary chemical consumption shows similarities within sub-sectors, the highest specific auxiliary chemical consumption (397 ± 237 g/kg product) was found in the synthetic woven fabric sub-sector. The sub-sector with the highest specific dyestuff consumption (30 ± 13 g/kg product) was the cotton knitted fabric sub-sector. The wool woven fabric industry had the highest specific electricity (7 ± 5.3 kWh/kg product) and steam (20 ± 11 kg steam/kg product) consumption. In addition, for all the studied sub-sectors country-wide, the lowest and highest reduction potentials in resource uses were 18 ± 15% and 73 ± 13%, respectively, suggesting a need for major full-scale implementations of cleaner production for enhancing sustainability in the textile industry. Textile industry creates serious amount of dye effluents. These hazardous molecules threat environment, animal, and plants. Therefore, there is an urgent need to diminish the negative effects of these substances. The current study describes reactive dye removal capacities of newly isolated halotolerant yeast. Because of textile wastewaters contain significant amount of salts, 14 yeasts isolates from cheese and pickle factory wastes were screened for their ability to remove different reactive dyes in molasses media contained NaCl. One isolate showed high Reactive Black 5 removal performance in the presence of 4% NaCl (w/v) and this isolate was identified as Kluyveromyces marxianus. Effects of some important parameters such as pH, NaCl concentration, incubation period, inoculum amount, and initial dye concentration on bioremoval efficiency were investigated. K. marxianus was able to remove 70% Reactive Black 5 at an initial dye concentration of 100 mg/L, pH 6 in the presence of 4% NaCl (w/v) and 10% (v/v) inoculum amount. The maximum specific dye uptake (qm) was obtained as 14.8 mg/g when initial dye concentration was 100 mg/L and this value increased to 33.8 mg/g in the presence of 390 mg/L initial dye which is equal to 27.5% removal of the dye. The global manufacturing sector heavily relies on the textile industry, yet the widespread utilization of synthetic dyes within this sector has raised serious environmental apprehensions, notably regarding wastewater contamination. The release of untreated wastewater containing residual dyes poses a significant risk to both aquatic ecosystems and human well‐being. In reaction to this issue, considerable efforts have been made to develop efficient and sustainable methods for the removal of textile dyes from wastewater. This comprehensive review paper furnishes in‐depth literature information covering various aspects of dyes, including their classification, toxicity effects, and evaluation of recent advancements in dye removal technology, emphasizing their advantages, limitations, and future potential. Various strategies are covered, including physical, chemical, and biological methods. Physical techniques like adsorption, filtration, and membrane technologies are contrasted with chemical approaches such as coagulation, precipitation, and advanced oxidation processes. Biological methods include the utilization of micro‐organisms, fungi, and enzymes to break down or metabolize dye compounds. Key considerations in the critical analysis include the efficiency, cost‐effectiveness, and scalability of each method. This review focuses on enzyme breakdown (biological) and adsorption (physical) color removal procedures, which are currently considered the most effective. The textile industry is known for its excessive water consumption and environmental impact. One of the major challenges it faces is managing pollution generated by dyes, particularly bifunctional dyes, such as sumireact supra yellow s-hbu, with a red appearance and sumifix supra lemon-yellow e-xf, with a yellow appearance. This study aimed to investigate the decolorization kinetics of synthetic solutions of said bifunctional dyes, which comprise triazine and vinylsulfon. We conducted various tests, including modifications of pH, the addition of TiO2 P-50 nanoparticles, exposure to solar radiation, limited contact with oxygen, and eolic agitation. The initial solutions had a concentration of 1000 ppm of textile dye. The study showed that the reaction order for the "red" solutions in the R6 and R9 reactors and all the yellow solutions was ½. The concentration of nanoparticles and pH had a significant impact on the reaction rate. The yellow solutions with a concentration of 800 ppm and pH levels of 3.15, 4.13, and 2.25 demonstrated 100% color discoloration, followed by solutions with a concentration of 400 ppm and pH levels of 3.15, 2.25, and 4.13. The denim textile industry represents an important productive sector. It generates wastewater with low biodegradability due to the presence of persistent pollutants, which can produce toxic and carcinogenic compounds; therefore, wastewater treatment reduces risks to aquatic life and public health. This paper presents a review of 172 papers regarding textile industry wastewater treatment for the removal of contaminants, especially indigo dyes used in the denim industry, in the context of green technologies. The physicochemical characteristics of textile wastewater, its environmental and health impacts, and the permissible limit regulations in different countries were reviewed. Biological, physicochemical and advanced oxidation processes for the removal of indigo dyes were reviewed. The goal of this study was to analyze the characteristics of green technologies; however, the research does not clearly demonstrate an effect on energy consumption savings, carbon footprint decreases, and/or waste generation. Advanced oxidation processes showed the highest color removal efficiency (95 and 97% in synthetic or real wastewater, respectively). Photocatalysis and Fenton reactions were the most efficient processes. None of the revised works presented results regarding upscaling for industrial application, and the results should be discussed in terms of the guidelines and maximum permissible limits established by international legislation. This study evaluates the adsorptive capacity of elephant grass (EG) in the removal of Methylene blue (MB) dye from wastewater sourced from two major local dyeing industries in Ogun State, Nigeria. Batch adsorption method was used to determine the optimum conditions, characterization of the adsorbent, equilibrium Isotherm models, kinetics and thermodynamics studies were conducted to evaluate the nature of the adsorption process. The optimum adsorption conditions obtained for the standard solution of MB dye were; pH 7, Temp 40 °C, contact time 180 min and adsorbent dosage 2.0 g. The presence of oxygen containing functional groups and shift or disappearance of bands in the FTIR suggested the suitability of EG for the process. The SEM of EG revealed presence and disappearance of pores before and after the adsorption process. The mechanism of this adsorption is complex, the adsorption data is best fitted to Langmuir isotherm, the mean adsorption energy E (≤6.455 kJ/mol), and activation energy (10.84 kJ/mol) represents physical process but, the thermodynamic studies revealed spontaneity (ΔG° −15.93 to −14.26 kJ mol−1), randomness, and endothermic (ΔH° 40.1 kJ/mol) nature, representing chemisorption. Therefore, local dyers around the study sites can make use of the freely available EG for the remediation of their wastewater. Elephant grass (EG) abundantly thrives on the study sites where dye wastewater is released by local dyers. This serves as the impetus for this research as no other plants thrive on the dye-polluted environment. A favorable adsorption was obtained with EG as adsorbent for the Methylene blue (MB) dye that is a major constituent of the wastewater from the two major local dyeing industries investigated. Background: Textile is one of the important sectors in the Indian economy. The use of synthetic chemicals is maximum during the wet processing technique, which consists of dyeing, printing and finishing. Aims and Objectives: This study was conducted to find out the prevalence of occupational dermatological symptoms among the workers employed in the dyeing and printing unit of the textile industry. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study, with a sample of 242 workers, was conducted in three different dyeing and printing factories. The workers were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire adapted from the Nordic Occupational Skin Questionnaire. Results: The prevalence of dermatological symptoms on the hands was found to be 51.7%. The various pattern of lesions included redness in 0.4% to itching in 26% of dyeing and printing workers. Those working for >5 years had 2.21 times higher risk as compared to those working for ≤5 years Odds Ratio (OR): 2.21; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.19–4.11). Similarly, those working in the dyeing section were at 2.94 times higher risk as compared to those working in the printing section (OR: 2.94; 95% CI: 1.58–5.47). Conclusion: The workers working in the printing and dyeing industry were at risk of developing skin lesions, which can partly be attributed to reactive chemicals used and partly to poor handling practices of the workers. Background: Proven toxicity and environmental burdens caused by artificial dyes have motivated dyeing industries to turn to natural alternatives. Plant-based dyestuffs are an interesting group of alternative crops. Reunion Island located in the Indian Ocean is the only European region in the southern hemisphere. It has a great number of assets to find new molecules in the abundant plant biodiversity. However, the dye-producing plants diversity in this island had not been documented to date. Methodology: The assessment of the Reunion Island's plant biodiversity through the "PLANTIN" project allowed us to establish here the first ethnobotanical inventory of plants growing on Reunion Island which may have promising properties as a new alternative source of dyes or colorants for the industries. First, an ethnobotanical survey focused on the uses of plants traditionally used in dyeing was conducted on local stakeholders. Then, the importance of different criteria (e.g., endemicity, accessibility and cultivability, plant organs used for the extraction, industrial interests of the species, etc.) has been considered to establish a classification method of the species, to finally select the most interesting plants which have been further harvested and investigated for their coloring property and dyeing application on natural fibers. Results: The results showed that local people have accumulated traditional knowledge of dyeing plants, but that this approach had been discontinued in Reunion. The uses of 194 plant species potentially rich in dyes or pigments, belonging to 72 different families, with diverse botanical status (endemic, native, introduced or alien-invasive species) have been recorded. Then, 43 species were harvested and their coloring property were investigated. It demonstrated that dyes extracted from promising species, e.g., Terminalia bentzoe, Weinmannia tinctoria, Thespesia populnea, Erythroxylum laurifolium, Morinda citrifolia, Leea guinensis, Ochrosia borbonica, Danais fragrans, Terminalia cattapa, Casuarina equisetifolia, and Coccoloba uvifera, amongst others, could be used as new textile dyes. Their efficacy in the wool and cotton dyeing has been successfully demonstrated here. Conclusion: These plant-based dyestuffs showed promising coloring properties with different shades that could meet industrial application requirement. It's an area that could promote local cultural inheritance, create opportunity for business and farmers, and that can make a significant contribution to preserving endangered native species by supporting reforestation schemes. For the current study, Bougainvillea flowers as environment friendly sustainable source of plant-based natural dye have been selected as an alternative to toxic synthetic dyes for dyeing of cotton and silk. Natural colorant from Bougainvillea flowers (Bougainvillea glabra) was extracted using aqueous and acidic extraction media. Maximum colorant was extracted in aqueous medium, and further it was used for cotton and silk dyeing. The optimum values of the dyeing parameters including dyeing time, dye to liquor ratio and salt level as exhausting agent were found to be 30 min, 35-mL liquor ratio and 3.0 g for cotton and for silk 45 min dyeing time, 45-mL liquor ratio and 3.0 g exhausting agent in aqueous dye extract. Bio mordanting has been applied to attain a variety of color shades. The utilization of 3% of henna, 4% of turmeric for silk pre-mordanting and for post-mordanting turmeric at 3% and henna at 4% for silk gave a darker shade. For cotton bio mordanting, 2% turmeric rhizome powder, 3% henna leaves powder extract as pre-mordant and 2% turmeric, 3% henna as post-mordant has developed a variety of shade. Overall, it has been found that natural colorant from Bougainvillea flowers is the new dye source for bio-coloration of natural fabrics, and addition of bio mordants has made the process more calming and eco-friendly. The effluent load from textile industries has forced traders and industrialists to use sustainable tools that not only save energy, money, and labor but also make the process cleaner. The purpose of this study is to improve the dyeing of proteinous fabrics using Acid Violet 49 dye under microwave radiation. Aqueous and acidic dye solutions were prepared and treated with MW radiations for up to 10 min. MW treated and untreated dye solutions were used to color treated and untreated fabrics to observe color yield. It has been found that dyeing of irradiated silk at 65 °C for 35 min, using 55 mL of irradiated dye solution containing 1 g/100 mL salt, has given excellent results. Whereas good color characteristics are obtained if irradiated wool fabric is dyed at 85 °C for 55 min, using 55 mL irradiated dye solution using 1 g/100 mL salt. Physicochemical analysis reveals that MW rays have physically modified the fabric without altering its chemistry. ISO standard methods employed for colorfastness show that under optimal conditions, the color developed is fast; statistical analysis shows that the dyeing process has given significant results. It is concluded that MW rays have excellent potential to improve acidic dyeing of proteinous fabric under mild conditions which show that the utilization of MW rays is a cost-, time-, and energy-effective process. Many pigments and dyes are not only valuable molecules in manufacturing, but also environmental pollutants. Stemming from the observation of the slow pace of change taking place to counter the 'fast fashion' phenomenon and its environmental consequences, this critical review highlights the importance not only of biotechnological approaches but also of a sustainable leadership to achieve a future-proof fashion industry. Science has been producing sustainable alternatives to counter the issue of dyes, but this is not enough. A change in the business attitude and leadership approach of the organizations that operate in the industry is needed. Only through the successful combination of new technologies and forward-looking decision-making will it be possible to alter the status quo and deal with the multiple environmental challenges that businesses are and will be facing. Recipe prediction is one of the most critical steps in the fabric dyeing industry. The conventional Kubelka–Munk model and neural network techniques have been widely used in recipe prediction systems. However, there are some limitations to these two methods: predictions using the Kubelka–Munk model may not be robust enough; and neural networks require large amounts of training data. Therefore, this paper investigates a novel recipe prediction method for fabric dyeing based on feature‐weighted support vector regression and particle swarm optimisation. Feature‐weighted support vector regression improved with particle swarm optimisation was first developed to predict the CIELab coordinates for given dye concentrations, expressed as c1c2...cn⇒L*a*b*. Particle swarm optimisation was utilised again in the recipe prediction stage to search for the optimal recipe in an iterative process. The optimisation criterion is to minimise the colour differences (CMC [2:1]) between the CIELab value calculated by feature‐weighted support vector regression improved with particle swarm optimisation and the target CIELab of a swatch. Dyeing data based on two different fabrics (cotton and taffeta) were used in the experiment. The proposed method revealed good results with a slight average colour difference between the target and reproduced colours. The absolute percentage errors in predicting concentrations were less than 5% in most of our experimental recipes. In recent years, the low‐environmental impact technology has given rise to new types of treatment in the textile industry. From the environmental point of view, mainly the textile dyeing process constitutes a significant pollution problem due to the variety and complexity of chemicals employed. Denim has been identified with indigo dyestuff throughout history. However, the percentage of warp yarn woven with sulphur‐dyed denim (included in the denim group of products) has increased in recent years. The justification of this study is to create a new concept in denim fabric dyeing. Conventional denim fabric properties have been tried to be obtained with less process. A novel method with a less environmentally detrimental technique that limits the use of water, chemicals, and other resources has been developed to achieve traditional denim fabric qualities. The colour changes, tensile‐tear strength, skew movement, dimensional stability, and the rubbing fastness values of fabrics dyed using these methods were examined comparatively. According to the results, the properties of fabric treated with the developed dyeing method, are very similar to those of the standard dyed fabrics. The tensile and tear strength values of the fabrics dyed using the reduced process method increased. The dimensional change and movement values of the fabric dyed with the new technique are higher. Fabric dyed with the conventional method has the highest K/S value but the lowest L* value. The greatest ΔE value was seen in fabrics with stone+hypo washing. Natural products particularly natural colorants have attained worldwide importance and being eco-friendly can be considered an alternative to toxic dyes in order to reduce environmental pollution. The current study is based on the exploration of natural coloring behavior of bitter gourd leaves extract for cotton dyeing. Colorant was extracted using different extraction media like aqueous, alkali, organic, and acidic at different conditions. It has been found that on application of 50 ml of acidic extract having 6 g/100 ml of table salt for 55 min at 60 C°, maximum color yield has been obtained onto cotton. Upon using chemical and bio-mordants, new shade with good color fastness rating was obtained. FTIR analysis of extract showed the presence of flavonoids. It is concluded that under mild condition, bitter gourd leaves extract can be considered potential source of natural colorant for cotton dyeing and the presence of bio-mordant has made the process more soothing and sustainable in nature. The textile and dyeing industry has shown dramatic growth alongside synthetic chemistry in the last century. With increased operations and economic importance, challenges also emerged, including environmental pollution, work safety, and consumer health. Hence, a change of perspectives in the industry is on the rise, and environmentally-friendly solutions for safer processes and more circularity are urgently sought-after. A possible solution for the pressing issue of textile dyeing is found in the use of natural colourants obtained in fermentation processes. The structural diversity of biogenic dyes is potentially high enough to pose an alternative on a broad front. Matching fundamental properties concerning dyeing, (bio)synthesis and toxicity give an impression of the advantages of developing this natural alternative. In this contribution, a comparison between biologically-derived dyes and their synthetic counterparts is conducted on several levels. The most important topics for the future are outlined. Significant challenges and potential solutions that limit the implementation of biogenic dyes into the textile dyeing value chain are discussed. Biotechnology offers numerous methods to increase reliable production or engineer molecular properties elegantly. The biggest advantage from a Green Chemistry perspective is the possibility to switch to renewable starting materials and obtain more biodegradable dyes. It reports on the historical background of Norwich textile manufacturing, tracing back to immigrant weavers known as 'Strangers,' and it highlights the influence of Dutch and Walloon techniques on the industry's revival in Norwich.

Textile industry releases large quantities of toxic dyes, which is a threat to public health and needs proper management before their release into environment. Out of the different approaches used these days, biodegradation and bio-decolorization is considered an eco-friendly and effective technique as this involves the use of microbes. This technique has the potential to be used effectively for a wide variety of dyes. In biological methods, mainly bacteria, fungi, and some algae are usually employed to remove or decolorize dyes present in textiles effluents and wastewaters. A number of researchers have used bacterial strains and relevant isolated enzymes successfully to decolorize a number of dyes. In this review article, various biological methods that have been used for the biodegradation and decolorization of textile dyes have been described. The review will also revive the significance of biological methods over other physical and chemical treatment methods that would be helpful in ensuring clean environment if used on large scale. Out of these methods, biodegradation through bacterial strains is considered as the best alternative to control water pollution as the growth rate of bacteria is considerably high as compared to other microorganisms. Dyes discharged from dyeing units and textile industries pollute the environment, particularly aquatic systems and cause considerable damage to organisms. Removal of colour is a prerequisite for discharge of treated textile effluents into the environment. Though several physical and chemical methods are available for decolourisation, biosorption is considered as cost effective and ecofriendly technique. Hence, in the present study, we explored possibilities of using orange peel for decolourisation of Bismarck brown dye, one of most common dyes used in the textile industry. Orange peel in different quantities (0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 g/100 mL) was tested with 0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 ppm concentrations of Bismarck Brown dye for ten days. The decolourisation activity proportionally increased with the increase in the treatment period. The dye concentration of 100 ppm was tested with 0.4 g orange peel in different pH ranges of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 and the absorption was high in acidic pH. The increase in contact time also resulted in increased dye removal. Over all, the adsorption of dye onto orange peels was influenced by initial dye concentration, pH, amount of adsorbent and contact time. Four grams of orange peel showed highest decolourisation after 200 min, and it was proportional to the contact time. The dye removal was the maximum at pH 2. Purpose: Dyeing process is usually to blame negatively for deteriorating the environment. Eco-friendly silk fibers are able to exercising their commercial values well followed by eco-friendly processing. One of the supporting examples is the process of changing the colors of silk fabrics. This would include the dyeing process used to change the colors of silk fabric. The intention of the study is to reach the goal of creating an eco-friendly finishing process using a local natural plant-based indigo dyeing process that would complement an eco-friendly degumming process. Currently, most dye houses use sodium hydrosulfite (Na2S2O4) and alkali (NaOH) as the substances for providing hydrogen as a reducing agent. Since the sodium hydroxide by-products are acidic, they may damage equipment in the dye houses, generate air pollution in working environment. The other problems associated with the use of sodium hydrosulfite are the cost and instability with low storage. Design/methodology/approach: This paper is based on continuing improvements to the commercialization of the raw materials via the innovative degumming process elaborated in the author's previous study: "Degumming of Silk Fibers by CO2 Supercritical Fluid." The initial study has already proved that it was possible to remove sericin from raw silk fiber by using an organic acid pretreatment and CO2 supercritical fluid over the heavy processes the industry currently deploys. The sericin removed from this innovative and eco-friendly processing of silk fiber will be remained in a clean state, not in the form of waste via the existing technologies in use. Clean sericin, rich in silk protein with high market values, can be a potentially perfect substitute of collagen the medical and cosmetic industries widely use. Originality/value: To make the silk manufacturing more green, the author has developed a technology for obtaining a plant-based indigo dye applying only locally grown agricultural products. The author has found that banana paste and banana peel paste have a sufficiently enough reduction potential for converting the indigo dye into indigo white, which is an important stage in the dyeing processes. The investigation performed showed that both these pastes can serve as a green alternative to sodium hydrosulfite, widely used in industry as a reducing agent. The main result of this study is the demonstration that natural, recyclable and easily biodegradable resources can be exploited to produce the semi-products for the textile industry and the final dyed silk fabrics as well. Summarizing the above, it can be concluded that we have got the results, which show promising alternative green processes for the textile industry in silk treatment (both degumming and dyeing). Textile industry wastewater includes organic dyes and decomposition products which could have toxic and mutagenic effects on life. The majority of industries in this sector use nonbiodegradable, heat-resistant, light, oxidizing agents and therefore synthetic dyes that are difficult to remove color. In this study, Dianix Yellow Brown CC (0.22%), Dianix Rubine CC (0.79%) and Setapers Blue CE3R (0.015%) containing disperse dye have been used in the production of wastewater from the dyehouse. In this study, textile wastewater has been treated which has applied adsorption and photocatalytic methods by using nano-titanium dioxide (nTiO2). Optimum chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color removal efficiencies have been determined for these two methods. Moreover, under the optimum conditions in the adsorption method, the COD removal efficiency has been obtained as 58.07% and also color removal efficiencies have been obtained as 95.24%, 95.15%, 96.83% for 436, 525 and 620 nm, respectively (pH 2, nTiO2 dose 2.5 g L-1 and 30 min reaction time). Therefore, under the optimum conditions in the photocatalytic method the COD removal efficiency has been obtained as 57.59% and also color removal efficiencies have been obtained as 95.24%, 96.31%, 94.71% for 436, 525 and 620 nm, respectively (pH 2, nTiO2 dose 1.5 g L-1 and 60 min reaction time). Four different kinetic, that is, first-order kinetic, second-order kinetic, pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, models have been used for the processes adsorption and photocatalytic. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model has been found to be the most suitable model for both processes. As a result, regression coefficients (R²) has been obtained for adsorption as 1 and for photocatalytic as 0.9999 and reaction rate constants (k) have been obtained for adsorption as 6.9 × 10-4 L mg-1 min-1 and for photocatalytic as 2.2 × 10-3 L mg-1 min-1. Poly(hexamethylene biguanide) (PHMB) is a commercially available cationic bactericide which can form stable and water-insoluble blue complex salt with bromophenol blue (BPB) at room temperature. Herein, we reported the feasibility and applicability of BPB for dyeing PHMB-coated fabrics. The colour yield, levelling property, dye uptake, fastness behavior and antimicrobial efficacy of PHMB-coated fabrics were fully investigated by a variety of analytical methods. The controllable blue colour shade depth depended on the concentration of BPB dyebath and the quantities of PHMB coated on the fabrics, and the colour levelness showed good and above rating. The dye uptake was positively proportional to the quantities of PHMB coated on the fabric, but showed negatively correlation to BPB concentration. The colour fastness to rubbing and washing were excellent, excluding anionic detergents washing. Continuous dyeing was found to be feasible at room temperature without any additives simply via replenishing BPB dyebath, hence avoiding dye wastewater discharge, which may provide an eco-friendly and sustainable dyeing method to reduce generation and emission of wastewater in textile industry. Meanwhile, the antibacterial efficacy of PHMB-coated fabrics was slightly compromised after BPB dyeing, but was still satisfactory, particularly against the gram-positive S. aureus. Textile industries generate large quantities of dye containing wastewater which pose a serious environmental problem. Currently, biosorbents have become desirable for the removal of dyes from textile effluents. In this study, batch experiments were conducted to investigate the biosorption characteristics of cactus peel on the removal of reactive red dye from aqueous solutions. The effects of solution pH, biosorbent dosage, contact time, and initial concentration were studied. The interaction effects of process variables were analysed using response surface methodology. The results showed that removal efficiency increased as initial dye concentration and solution pH decreased and as biosorbent dosage and contact time increased. The highest removal efficiency (99.43%) was achieved at solution pH, initial dye concentration, biosorbent dose, and contact time of 3.0, 40 mg/l, 6 g, and 120 min, respectively. From regression analysis, the Langmuir isotherm was found to better (R2 = 0.9935) represent the biosorption process as compared with the Freundlich isotherm (R2 = 0.9722). Similarly, the pseudo-second-order model was seen to represent very well the biosorption kinetics. The results show that cactus peel has good potential for the removal of reactive red dye. Construction of photoactive nanofibrous membranes for effective treatment of dyeing effluents is critical to meet the great demands of environmental protection in textile industry, yet still remains a big challenge. In this work, we report a cost-effective strategy to create rechargeable photoactive cellulose nanofibrous membranes (BPTCD-CeNM) under mild conditions that can effectively and repeatedly produce hydroxyl radicals for dye degradation. The principle of this design is that BPTCD-CeNM could store photoactivity under UV light irradiation and release hydroxyl radicals under dark conditions. The membranes possess an ultra-fine fiber diameter (275 nm), large surface area (3.06 m2 g−1) and excellent degradation performance for reactive red 195, reactive yellow 4 and acid blue 7 (> 99.99% within 60 min). The successful fabrication of such materials may open up new avenues for designing and constructing highly efficient photoactive membrane materials for environmental applications. As a cheap and abundant agricultural byproduct, buckwheat hull is expected to be applied in many fields such as textile, biotechnology, and medicine. In this paper, the physicochemical properties of buckwheat hull extraction (BHE) and its dyeing abilities for wool fabric with different eco-friendly mordants and methods were studied. The theoretical process, colorfastness, and UV-protection properties of the dyed wool fabric with BHE were investigated. The results showed that BHE solution had good thermal and reduction stability. The dyeing process of BHE on wool was in accordance with the Langmuir model and had uniform monolayer adsorption. Wool fabrics dyed directly or through a mordanting process demonstrated good washing colorfastness and acceptable crocking- and light colorfastness. The dyed wool fabrics with KAl2+ and meta-mordanting showed excellent UV-protection as well as exceptional antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli. Acid orange 74 (AO74) is a chromium-complex monoazo acid dye widely used in the textile industry. Due to being highly toxic and non-biodegradable, it must be removed from polluted water to protect the health of people and the environment. The aim of this study was two-fold: to evaluate the biosorption of AO74 from an aqueous solution by utilizing HCl-pretreated Lemna sp. (HPL), and to examine dye desorption from the plant material. The maximum capacity of AO74 biosorption (64.24 mg g-1) was reached after 4 h at the most adequate pH, which was 2. The biosorption capacity decreased 25% (to 48.18 mg g-1) during the second biosorption/desorption cycle and remained essentially unchanged during the third cycle. The pseudo-second-order kinetics model concurred well with the experimental results of assays involving various levels of pH in the eluent solution and distinct initial concentrations of AO74. NaOH (0.01 M) was the best eluent solution. The Toth isotherm model best described AO74 biosorption equilibrium data. FTIR analysis confirmed the crucial role of HPL proteins in AO74 biosorption. SEM-EDX and CLSM techniques verified the effective biosorption/desorption of the dye during the three cycles. Therefore, HPL has potential for the removal of AO74 dye from wastewaters. Biodegradable polybutylene succinate (PBS) fibre is a new type of textile fibre, but its application in the textile industry is limited by the lack of related dyeing methods. In this study, the solubility parameters of PBS fibres are calculated, and solvent dyes with similar solubility parameters are proposed to dye PBS fibres to show that the dyeing scheme creatively resolves the difficulty in dyeing PBS fibres. The technical parameters of suitable dyes, and the dyeing conditions with ethanol as the dyeing medium, consisted of a dyeing temperature of 90°C, a dyeing time of 30 minutes and a liquor ratio of 30:1. The dyeing results show that the levelling property is good, the dyebath exhaustion is high, and the washing fastness, the rubbing fastness and the perspiration fastness index of the dyed fibres are satisfactory. Direct Red 81 (DR-81) dye with a very high water solubility is widely used in many industries particularly textile industries. This study aimed to evaluate the practicability of using iron filings for the adsorption of DR-81 dye from the aqueous solutions. The effects of pH, adsorbent dose, initial DR-81 dye concentration, and adsorption time on adsorption process were also evaluated. The maximum of adsorption efficiency of DR-81 dye achieved in the optimum pH: 3, adsorbent dose: 2.5 g/L, contact time: 30 min, and initial dye concentration: 50 mg/L. The dye adsorption efficiency is increased by increasing the adsorbent dose and adsorption time. The kinetic and isotherm studies indicated that the adsorption process obeys a pseudo–first–order and Langmuir isotherm models. The experimental studies indicated that iron filings had the potential to act as an alternative adsorbent to remove the DR-81 dye from an aqueous solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The differential dyeing (DD) method has been a subjective method for visually determining immature cotton fibers. We attempted to quantitate DD results and offer an efficient means of elucidating cotton maturity, without visual discretion. Image analysis of cotton color obtained with a scanner was performed and compared to spectrophotometrically measured color. Low, Medium and High micronaire (Mic) cotton standards were dyed, and we determined that blending the cotton yielded more precise color measurement; with the mean red, green and blue (RGB) values for a low Mic sample being: 101.6 ± 23.9, 83.1 ± 22.0 and 98.3 ± 23.1, respectively; while blending yielded RGB values: 121.6 ± 9.0, 98.8 ± 8.6 and 116.0 ± 8.9, respectively. Comparing RGB values to Mic, it was found that R and B color parameters do not show a trend, but G values decrease with increasing Mic indicating a decrease in G dye uptake with an increase in maturity. The conventional L*a*b* color space values were also obtained for the dyed cottons and compared to RGB and Mic results. The %CV for a* values are higher compared to L* and b* measurements: ∼31.9%, 18.9% and 8.6% for low, medium and high Mic samples, respectively. L* and b* decrease while a* increases with Mic, indicating an increase in R dye with an increase in maturity. The DD Bath method was found to be reliable, with R showing the greatest variances. The objective of our study was to evaluate the operating conditions for the removal of two dyes used in the textile industry, namely methylene blue (MB) and yellow basic 28 (BY28), from aqueous solutions. To do this, the low-cost agricultural Algerian olive cake waste (AAOCW) was used as an adsorbent. Equilibrium and kinetics tests were performed to define the applicability of this new adsorbent for the removal of selected dyes. The adsorption of the dyes on the AAOCW depends on the nature of the dye, the contact time, the pH, the initial concentration, and the amount of adsorbent. Two kinetic models including pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order were used to analyze the kinetic experimental data. The pseudo-second-order model provides the best results, suggesting that the chemisorption of dyes on the surface of the adsorbent plays an important role in the overall kinetics of the process. Finally, the characterization of the experimental isothermal data of MB and BY28 adsorption on AAOCW was performed using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Good fit results were obtained. The maximum adsorption capacity in monolayer was 25.98 mg g−1 and 38.95 mg g−1 for MB and BY28, respectively. The proposed adsorbent is a suitable candidate for removing dyes from aqueous media. Natural dyes and pigments have been proposed as an eco-friendly alternative to artificial pigments. Among the diverse organisms able to synthesize natural dyes and pigments, several wood inhabiting fungi produce extracellular compounds which have been tested to dye fabrics at laboratory conditions with good results. However, the dyeing conditions used at laboratory level not necessary meet the real conditions in which dyeing of fabrics is conducted at industrial level. In this work, yellow and red dyes producing fungi, Penicillium murcianum and Talaromyces australis, respectively, were isolated from wood samples and used to dye wool fabrics at conditions of temperature, pH, additives, and equipment similar to those used at industrial level. After dyeing treatments, color fastness to washing, wet and dry rubbing, and tensile strength were tested. Satisfactory results were found when the dyes were used individually and mixed to different proportions. According to the results, natural dyes synthesized by these two wood inhabiting fungi have great potential to be used for dyeing of wool at industrial level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Present study envisaged evaluating the effect of Basic violet-1 (BV-1, CI No. 42535), a widely used azo dye in dyeing and textile industries, on antioxidant enzymes of Labeo rohita fingerlings (7.6 - 11.3 cm length and 16.1 - 26.7 g weight). Antioxidant enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase (AChE), succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) were estimated in liver, kidney, gill, muscle and brain of the fish as markers for the stress of BV-1. After 96h, the fish were kept for a recovery period of 30 days and activity of enzymes was determined at 15 day intervals. Significant dose dependent increase over control in the activity of AST (79.69%) and ALT (50.07%) was observed in all the tissues while a significant decrease over control was observed in AChE (717.43%) and SDH (173.07%) activity in all the tissues. Alterations in the activity of enzymes could probably be due to a defense against oxidative damage caused by the dye and prolonged effect till the end of the recovery period could be a metabolic adaptation of the fish to the stress of the present dye. The results indicate that the dye is very toxic to L. rohita as there was a marked change in the activity of selected enzymes in the exposed fish and the effect prolonged till the end of recovery period. So these enzymes in the selected tissues can be considered as best biomarker to determine toxicity of even very low doses of the azo dye BV-1 in fish. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Environmental problems due to the textile industry are mainly associated with the need for large amounts of fresh water and discharging highly polluted wastewater. This wastewater contains several types of pollutants, such as dispersants, leveling agents, salts, carriers, acids, alkali, and various dyes. The wastewater quality is variable and depends on the kind of process that generates the effluent. In addition, color is the first recognizable pollutant, which has a negative effect on the ecosystem. Many methods are available for removing the contaminant; among the various methods, adsorption is significantly important and is the major method adopted in chemical and process industries. In recent times, there has been a drastic increase in the use of various types of charcoals as adsorbent. This review article focuses on textile wastewater; adsorption; preparation of charcoals and its activated forms using various materials; and treatment of textile wastewater using various types of charcoals. Treatment of real and synthesized wastewater (i.e., dye solution) is included and a feasibility study of utilizing charcoal is performed by comparing adsorption capacities or percentage removal.
