The objective of this thesis was to study how sediment microbial communities in Mediterranean rivers used dissolved organic matter at different spatial and temporal scales. Results from the two field studies, showed that the quality and origin of the dissolved organic matter (allochthonous versus autochthonous) and the different hydrological periods (drought versus base flow) highly modified the biofilm functioning and composition. On the other hand, the two laboratory experiments showed that first, the decrease in dissolved oxygen in sediment depth determined the microbial organic matter degradation. And second, results also showed that warming river water increased the heterotrophy of the microbial communities and clearly modified the food web structure. In conclusion this thesis demonstrates that the structure and functioning of sediment biofilms change at different spatial and temporal scales and they are sensitive to the increase in water pollution and the effects of global climate change., L’objectiu d’aquesta tesi era investigar com les comunitats microbianes del sediment dels rius Mediterranis utilitzaven la matèria orgànica dissolta a diferents escales espacials i temporals. Els resultats dels dos experiments de camp, van demostrar que tant la qualitat i l’origen de la matèria orgànica dissolta (al·lòcton versus autòcton) com els canvis hidrològics (sequera versus cabal mitjà) clarament modificaven l’activitat i la composició del biofilm. D’altra banda, els dos experiments de laboratori van mostrar primer que la disminució de l’oxigen dissolt en profunditat determinava la degradació microbiana de la matèria orgànica. I segon, com l’escalfament de l’aigua feia augmentar l’heterotròfia de les comunitats microbianes i modificava clarament l’estructura de la xarxa tròfica. En conclusió aquesta tesi demostra que l’estructura i el funcionament dels biofilms dels sediments varia espacial i temporalment i són sensibles a l’augment de la contaminació de l’aigua i els efectes del canvi climàtic global.

River sediments are composed by a variety of grain sizes which determine their permeability and biogeochemistry. The aim of this thesis was to test whether differences in river sediment physical characteristics generate differences in biofilm biomass and metabolic activity in a Mediterranean river. To this aim, formulae for estimating hydraulic conductivity were reviewed, and the relationship between sediment grain-size distribution and microbial biomass, and microbial metabolism depth gradients were analyzed. Results suggest selecting the Kozany-Carman formula to estimate hydraulic conductivity for Tordera sandy sediments. Sediment physical properties affected accumulation of organic matter, chlorophyll-a and bacteria but this effect was different depending on hydrological events and microbial group considered; bacteria being the most affected. Microbial activities in sediment depth were regulated by the permeability of streambeds through organic compounds contributing to microbial activities. L’objectiu d’aquesta tesi era testar si les diferències en les característiques físiques del sediment generen diferències en la biomassa i l’activitat metabòlica del biofilm en un riu mediterrani. Per aquest objectiu, es revisaren diverses fórmules per a estimar la conductivitat hidràulica i s’analitzà: la relació entre la distribució de mides de gra del sediment amb la biomassa microbiana i, el metabolisme microbià en un gradient de profunditat del sediment. Els resultats suggeriren seleccionar la fórmula de Kozany-Carman per a estimar la conductivitat hidràulica dels sediments sorrencs del riu Tordera. Les característiques físiques del sediment afectaren l’acumulació de matèria orgànica, clorofil·la i bacteris però aquest efecte fou diferent en funció del període hidrològic i del grup microbià, sent els bacteris els més afectats. Les activitats microbianes en profunditat eren regulades per la permeabilitat del sediment. Improving methods for automatic and continuous description of cloud has a huge importance in order to determine the role of clouds in climate and their contribution to climate change. The geometric characteristics of clouds, such as the cloud cover and the cloud vertical structure (CVS), including the cloud base height (CBH) which is linked to cloud type, are very important for describing the impact clouds have on the atmosphere. It is presented a complete study of the cloud cover and the CBH above Girona (Spain) measured with a ceilometer, during the period 2007-2010. And a comparison of the CVS obtained from methods based on radiosonde profiles with estimations produced by ground-based active instruments (that is, the Active Remote Sensing of Clouds, ARSCL) over Southern Great Plains (USA) is presented in order to find the better approximation to the real vertical structure and reveal the strengths and weaknesses of the methods, La millora dels mètodes de descripció automàtica i contínua dels núvols és de gran importància a l’hora de determinar el paper de la nuvolositat en el clima i la seva contribució al canvi climàtic. Les característiques geomètriques de la nuvolositat, com ara la fracció coberta i la distribució vertical dels núvols (CVS), incloent l’altura de la base (CBH), són molt importants per tal de descriure l’impacte dels núvols en l’atmosfera. Nitrate groundwater pollution in the Osona region is a persistent and widespread problem. Nitrate concentrations are commonly above the drinking water threshold of 50 mg/L in wells and springs. ANOVA and logistic regression analyses showed that nitrate concentration is more dependent on land use than on the geological setting of springs. Nitrate content presented stationary values in most of the springs over time, while discharge and electrical conductivity evolution depends on the geological setting and rainfall events. This is attributed to a homogenization of the subsurface processes that determine nitrate infiltration after decades of intensive fertilization. A multiple linear regression model to assess groundwater vulnerability determined that the factors that significantly influence nitrate pollution are: nitrogen load, aquifer type, presence of well-drained and deep soils, irrigation and occurrence of denitrification processes. Vulnerability maps for unconfined, leaky and confined aquifers were developed and can be used for improving groundwater resources management, La contaminació per nitrats de les aigües subterrànies a Osona és un problema persistent i generalitzat, amb concentracions superiors a 50 mg/L. Els mapes de vulnerabilitat desenvolupats per aqüífers lliures, semi-confinats i confinats són útils per millorar la gestió de les aigües subterrànies

Apart from the geological controls that can cause As mobilization in groundwater in the Bengal Delta Plain, local anthropogenic factors may also contribute to some extent. Investigations showed that As(III) get enriched in the groundwater after the monsoonal season. This could be due to the enhanced reducing conditions in the aquifer post-monsoonal recharge. The larger inorganic colloids were responsible to scavenge As(III) and the smaller organic/organo-metallic colloids were found to scavenge As(V). A study was carried out to improve the Solar Oxidation and Removal of Arsenic (SORAS) for rural population, using tomatoes instead of lemons, showing that tomato was more efficient and cost-effective than lemon or lime. A novel technique combining hollow fiber liquid phase microextraction (HF-LPME) with Total Reflection X-Ray Fluorescence (TXRF) for the determination and speciation of As in groundwater was developed. The results in the laboratory samples were found encouraging and applied to natural samples successfully Además de los controles geológicos, los factores antropogénicos contribuyen también a la movilización de arsénico en el agua subterránea del Bengal Delta Plain. This thesis is aimed to introduce a newly developed machine learning method, conformal predictors, for air pollution assessment. For the given area of study, the Barcelona Metropolitan Region (BMR), several conformal prediction models have been developed. These models use the specification which is called ridge regression confidence machine (RRCM). The conformal predictors that have been developed for the purposes of the present study are ridge regression models, and they always provide valid predictions. Instead of a point prediction, a conformal predictor outputs a prediction set, which is usually an interval. It is desired that these sets would be as small as possible. The underlying algorithm for the conformal predictors derived in this thesis is ordinary kriging. A kriging-based conformal predictor can capture spatial distribution of the data with the use of so-called "kernel trick", Aquest treball està destinat a introduir el nou mètode de les màquines d'aprenentatge, els predictors de conformació, per l'avaluació de la contaminació de l'aire a la Regió Metropolitana de Barcelona (RMB). Es fa servir l'especificació anomenada màquina de confiança de la regressió cresta (RRCM). Els predictors de conformació que s'han desenvolupat per les finalitats d'aquest estudi són uns models de regressió cresta, que sempre ofereixen prediccions vàlides. Applicaciò d'un model de hydrodinàmica i de qualitat de l'aigua als embassaments de Sau i Boadella, The aim of this work is to have an idea about the behaviour of Sau and Boedella reservoirs in term of hydrodynamic and water quality, the models applied for are Dynamic simulation model DYRESM and water quality model CAEDYM., En la tesi s'ha aplicat el model de qualitat de l'aigua DYREM-CAEDYM als embassaments de Sau i Boadella. Els models de qualitat de l'aigua són capaços de predir l'evolució física, química i biològica dels embassaments. Un cop inicialitzats i calibrats ens poden donar informació de com evolucionarà, per exemple, el fòsfor dissolt i les poblacions d'algues. Per funcionar, aquests models necessiten nodrir-se diàriament amb dades meteorològiques com ara la radiació solar, la velocitat del vent o les precipitacions, les quals es poden obtenir d'estacions meteorològiques properes als embassaments. També calen dades biològiques que han estat facilitades per diferents persones i organismes com el Departament d'Ecologia de la Universitat de Barcelona i l'Agència Catalana de l'Aigua. Aquests models no són fàcils de manejar i el primer que s'ha de fer és estudiar-ne la seva aplicabilitat. Concretament, cal saber si poden ser d'una dimensió o en cal un nombre superior. Això es fa comprovant l'evolució de diferents nombres adimensionals, com per exemple els de Wedderburn i Burger. Un cop calibrat, el model DYRESM-CAEDYM prediu -molt bé- l'evolució de la temperatura i -bastant bé- la de l'oxigen dissolt, sobretot a l'embassament de Sau,indicant la presència de zones anòxiques al fons. La tendència en l'evolució del fòsfor dissolt també s'hi veu ben reflectida. En canvi, les simulacions de la clorofila-a, indicativa de les algues, no són tan acurades ja que depenen de molt factors, alguns dels quals no queden prou reflectits en el model. L'objectiu final de la tesi és poder millorar la gestió dels embasaments indicant, per exemple, quina és la fondària òptima d'extracció de l'aigua.

Human activities have been interfering with the natural biogeochemical cycles of trace elements since the ancient civilizations. Although they are inaccessible and remote, high mountain lake catchments are irrefutably trace-element contaminated by anthropogenic emissions, which can travel by long-range atmospheric transport before they are deposited. This has been revealed by several natural archives. High mountain lake catchments are thus excellent sentinels of long-range contamination. Continuous accumulation can lead to a build up of potentially toxic trace elements in these remote, or relatively remote, ecosystems. The thesis focuses on the biogeochemistry of a suite of trace elements of environmental concern (Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Cd and Pb) in Pyrenean lake catchments, with special emphasis on discerning the “natural” components from the “anthropogenic” contributions. Five other metallic elements (Al, Fe, Ti, Mn and Zr) have also been studied to trace natural fluxes and biogeochemical processes within the lake catchment systems., Les activitats humanes han interferit en els cicles biogeoquímics naturals dels elements traça des de les antigues civilitzacions. Malgrat ser inaccessibles i remotes, les conques lacustres de muntanya es troben clarament contaminades pels elements traça procedents d’emissions antropogèniques, que s’hi han desplaçat per mitjà del transport atmosfèric de llarg abast i la subseqüent deposició, tal com revelen diversos arxius naturals. Per tant, les conques lacustres de muntanya són indicadores excel•lents d’aquesta contaminació de llarg abast. La seva contínua acumulació ha deixat una quantitat important d’elements traça potencialment tòxics en aquests ecosistemes remots o relativament remots. La tesi se centra en la biogeoquímica d’un conjunt d’elements traça de rellevància ambiental (Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Cd i Pb) en conques lacustres pirinenques, amb especial èmfasi en distingir els components “naturals” de les contribucions “antropogèniques”. A més a més, s’han estudiat cinc metalls més (Al, Fe, Ti, Mn, Zr) per traçar fluxos i processos biogeoquímics naturals en els sistemes lacustres.

El Volcán Arenal es un joven estratovolcán (7ka) localizado en el noroeste de Costa Rica. Inicio su presente ciclo eruptivo el 29 de Julio de 1968 con una gran explosión lateral que mató alrededor de 90 personas. En el momento inicial de la erupción los alrededores del volcán estaban ocupados principalmente por fincas ganaderas. Hoy día, 40 años después de constante actividad volcánica las tierras dedicadas a la ganadería en los alrededores del volcán han retrocedido como principal actividad económica para dar paso a la creciente infraestructura turística. La población de La Fortuna, la ciudad más cercana al volcán (5 km) ha crecido aceleradamente como producto del desarrollo del turismo y la cercanía al volcán.Considerando los peligros volcánicos presentes, las tendencias de crecimiento de la población, y la extensión de la actividad turística, se propone una zonificación de los usos del suelo en La Fortuna de San Carlos y alrededores del Volcán Arenal.El estudio de percepción del riesgo en la población fue implementado en La Fortuna y alrededores con posee una población de aproximadamente 12000 personas. La población fue dividida en dos segmentos para el análisis. Lo primero fue una muestra (N=32) de la población directamente involucrada en la actividad turística (dueños de hotel, empleados, dueños de restaurante, operadora de tour, etc). La segunda (N=40) fue una muestra de la población residente en la ciudad de La Fortuna y alrededores, relacionados o no con las actividades turísticas. Se diseño una entrevista para cada segmento investigado. Así se investigó la percepción del riesgo de la población directamente beneficiada por el turismo atreves de la actividad volcánica y la población residente.El Volcán Arenal es visto de dos formas diferentes por la población que vive en la zona de La Fortuna. Por un lado, la población que vive directamente de la actividad turística, mencionan que el volcán es la razón del acelerado crecimiento económico en el lugar durante la última década. Además, para este grupo el Arenal es la fuente de cientos de empleos y la fuerza que ha transformado a La Fortuna de un poblado rural a una prospera ciudad con una inusual oferta de servicios para los turistas y residentes.Por otra parte, los residentes que no dependen directamente de la actividad turística creen que el volcán es el más importante peligro natural en la zona, sin embargo han aprendido a convivir con él., The volcano Arenal is a young stratovolcano (7 ka) located in the Northwest of Costa Rica. The population of La Fortuna, the closest town to the volcano (5 km), has grown in an accelerated pace as a product of the development of tourism in the vicinity of the volcano.Considering the volcanic hazards involved, the trends in population growth, and the extension of the tourist activity, we propose a land use zoning for La Fortuna de San Carlos and the surrounding area of Arenal volcano.A population study of risk perception was implemented in La Fortuna and surroundings that covers some 12,000 inhabitants. The population was divided in two segments for analyses. The first was a sample (N =32) of the population directly involved in tourism activities (hotel owners and employees, restaurant owners, tour operators, etc). The second (N = 40) was a sample of the resident population in the town of La Fortuna and surroundings, related or unrelated to tourism activities. A specially designed interview for each segment was applied. We thus investigated the risk perception of the population who directly benefited from volcanic activity through tourism and of the resident population.Arenal volcano was interpreted in two different ways by the population living in the area of La Fortuna. On the one hand, the population that lives directly from tourism perceives the volcano as the reason for the accelerated economic activity in the area during the last decade. Therefore, for this group the volcano is perceived as a source of hundreds of jobs and the force that transformed La Fortuna from a rural town to a highly prosperous city with an unusually broad offering of services for tourists and residents. On the other hand, the residents who do not live from tourism believe the volcano is the most important natural hazard in the area, but they also believe that they have learned to live next to an active volcano.

Procesos hidrodinámicos determinan, en un alto grado la calidad del agua en embalse, sin embargo dichos procesos han sido tradicionalmente olvidados en la gestión de embalse. En esta tesis se presentan evidencias de los principales procesos hidrodinámicos que ocurren en un embalse Mediterráneo a escala de cuenca a través de campañas experimentales y modelización numérica; y su influencia en la dinámica de poblaciones de fitoplancton. Dichos procesos son principalmente la generación de ondas internas o secas y la intrusión del río. La presencia de viento periódico genera secas forzadas, amplificando los modos cercanos al periodo del viento, de manera que modos verticales altos, considerados como raros en la naturaleza, tienden a dominar en el sistema., Physical processes determine, to a large degree, the ecological response of a reservoir to inflows, outflows and meteorological forcing. This PhD thesis therefore aims to give an assessment of the main physical mechanisms governing Mediterranean reservoirs. The main basin-scale hydrodynamical processes are the generation of seiches and the gravity currents generated by the river inflow. The periodicity of the wind forcing makes that the reservoir responses as a forced harmonic damped oscillator being the natural modes of oscillation close to the forcing period preferably excited; including high vertical modes considered rare in the nature. The fate of the river inflow nutrients input generates horizontal heterogeneities in the community of phytoplankton.

Aquesta tesi estudia com estimar la distribució de les variables regionalitzades l'espai mostral i l'escala de les quals admeten una estructura d'espai Euclidià. Apliquem el principi del treball en coordenades: triem una base ortonormal, fem estadística sobre les coordenades de les dades, i apliquem els output a la base per tal de recuperar un resultat en el mateix espai original. Aplicant-ho a les variables regionalitzades, obtenim una aproximació única consistent, que generalitza les conegudes propietats de les tècniques de kriging a diversos espais mostrals: dades reals, positives o composicionals (vectors de components positives amb suma constant) són tractades com casos particulars. D'aquesta manera, es generalitza la geostadística lineal, i s'ofereix solucions a coneguts problemes de la no-lineal, tot adaptant la mesura i els criteris de representativitat (i.e., mitjanes) a les dades tractades. L'estimador per a dades positives coincideix amb una mitjana geomètrica ponderada, equivalent a l'estimació de la mediana, sense cap dels problemes del clàssic kriging lognormal. El cas composicional ofereix solucions equivalents, però a més permet estimar vectors de probabilitat multinomial. Amb una aproximació bayesiana preliminar, el kriging de composicions esdevé també una alternativa consistent al kriging indicador. Aquesta tècnica s'empra per estimar funcions de probabilitat de variables qualsevol, malgrat que sovint ofereix estimacions negatives, cosa que s'evita amb l'alternativa proposada. La utilitat d'aquest conjunt de tècniques es comprova estudiant la contaminació per amoníac a una estació de control automàtic de la qualitat de l'aigua de la conca de la Tordera, i es conclou que només fent servir les tècniques proposades hom pot detectar en quins instants l'amoni es transforma en amoníac en una concentració superior a la legalment permesa., This Thesis presents an estimation procedure for the distribution of regionalized variables with sample space and scale admitting an Euclidean structure. We apply the principle of working on coordinates: choose an orthonormal basis; do statistics on the coordinates of your observations on that basis; and, by applying the output to the basis, you will recover a result within the original space. Applying this procedure to regionalized variables, we obtain a unified, consistent method, with the same properties of classical linear kriging techniques, but valid for several sample spaces: real data, positive data and compositions (vectors of positive components summing up to a constant) are regarded as particular cases. In this way we generalize the linear kriging techniques, and offer a solution to several well-known problems of the non-linear ones, by adapting the measure of the space and the averaging criterion (the way means are computed) to the data. The obtained estimator for positive variables is a weighted geometric mean, equivalent to estimate the median, which has none of the drawback of classical lognormal kriging. For compositional data, equivalent results are obtained, but which also serve to treat multinomial probability vectors. By combining this with a preliminary Bayesian estimation, our kriging for compositions become also a valid alternative to indicator kriging, without its order-relation problems (i.e. the rather-usual negative estimates of some probabilities). These techniques are validated by studying the ammonia pollution hazard in an automatic water quality control station placed in a small Mediterranean river. Only the proposed techniques allow us to assess when the secondary pollution by ammonia exceeds the existing legal threshold.

En les últimes dècades, l'increment dels nivells de radiació solar ultraviolada (UVR) que arriba a la Terra (principalment degut a la disminució d'ozó estratosfèric) juntament amb l'augment detectat en malalties relacionades amb l'exposició a la UVR, ha portat a un gran volum d'investigacions sobre la radiació solar en aquesta banda i els seus efectes en els humans. L'índex ultraviolat (UVI), que ha estat adoptat internacionalment, va ser definit amb el propòsit d'informar al públic general sobre els riscos d'exposar el cos nu a la UVR i per tal d'enviar missatges preventius. L'UVI es va definir inicialment com el valor màxim diari. No obstant, el seu ús actual s'ha ampliat i té sentit referir-se a un valor instantani o a una evolució diària del valor d'UVI mesurat, modelitzat o predit. El valor concret d'UVI està afectat per la geometria Sol-Terra, els núvols, l'ozó, els aerosols, l'altitud i l'albedo superficial.Les mesures d'UVI d'alta qualitat són essencials com a referència i per estudiar tendències a llarg termini; es necessiten també tècniques acurades de modelització per tal d'entendre els factors que afecten la UVR, per predir l'UVI i com a control de qualitat de les mesures. És d'esperar que les mesures més acurades d'UVI s'obtinguin amb espectroradiòmetres. No obstant, com que els costs d'aquests dispositius són elevats, és més habitual trobar dades d'UVI de radiòmetres eritemàtics (de fet, la majoria de les xarxes d'UVI estan equipades amb aquest tipus de sensors). Els millors resultats en modelització s'obtenen amb models de transferència radiativa de dispersió múltiple quan es coneix bé la informació d'entrada. No obstant, habitualment no es coneix informació d'entrada, com per exemple les propietats òptiques dels aerosols, la qual cosa pot portar a importants incerteses en la modelització. Sovint, s'utilitzen models més simples per aplicacions com ara la predicció d'UVI o l'elaboració de mapes d'UVI, ja que aquests són més ràpids i requereixen menys paràmetres d'entrada.Tenint en compte aquest marc de treball, l'objectiu general d'aquest estudi és analitzar l'acord al qual es pot arribar entre la mesura i la modelització d'UVI per condicions de cel sense núvols.D'aquesta manera, en aquest estudi es presenten comparacions model-mesura per diferents tècniques de modelització, diferents opcions d'entrada i per mesures d'UVI tant de radiòmetres eritemàtics com d'espectroradiòmeters. Com a conclusió general, es pot afirmar que la comparació model-mesura és molt útil per detectar limitacions i estimar incerteses tant en les modelitzacions com en les mesures. Pel que fa a la modelització, les principals limitacions que s'han trobat és la falta de coneixement de la informació d'aerosols considerada com a entrada dels models. També, s'han trobat importants diferències entre l'ozó mesurat des de satèl·lit i des de la superfície terrestre, la qual cosa pot portar a diferències importants en l'UVI modelitzat. PTUV, una nova i simple parametrització pel càlcul ràpid d'UVI per condicions de cel serens, ha estat desenvolupada en base a càlculs de transferència radiativa. La parametrització mostra una bona execució tant respecte el model base com en comparació amb diverses mesures d'UVI. PTUV ha demostrat la seva utilitat per aplicacions particulars com ara l'estudi de l'evolució anual de l'UVI per un cert lloc (Girona) i la composició de mapes d'alta resolució de valors d'UVI típics per un territori concret (Catalunya). En relació a les mesures, es constata que és molt important saber la resposta espectral dels radiòmetres eritemàtics per tal d'evitar grans incerteses a la mesura d'UVI. Aquest instruments, si estan ben caracteritzats, mostren una bona comparació amb els espectroradiòmetres d'alta qualitat en la mesura d'UVI. Les qüestions més importants respecte les mesures són la calibració i estabilitat a llarg termini. També, s'ha observat un efecte de temperatura en el PTFE, un material utilitzat en els difusors en alguns instruments, cosa que potencialment podria tenir implicacions importants en el camp experimental.Finalment, i pel que fa a les comparacions model-mesura, el millor acord s'ha trobat quan es consideren mesures d'UVI d'espectroradiòmetres d'alta qualitat i s'usen models de transferència radiativa que consideren les millors dades disponibles pel que fa als paràmetres òptics d'ozó i aerosols i els seus canvis en el temps. D'aquesta manera, l'acord pot ser tan alt dins un 0.1º% en UVI, i típicament entre menys d'un 3%. Aquest acord es veu altament deteriorat si s'ignora la informació d'aerosols i depèn de manera important del valor d'albedo de dispersió simple dels aerosols. Altres dades d'entrada del model, com ara l'albedo superficial i els perfils d'ozó i temperatura introdueixen una incertesa menor en els resultats de modelització., The increase in solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) levels reaching the Earth surface during the last decades (mostly induced by the stratospheric ozone depletion), together with a detected increase in UVR-related diseases, has lead to a high volume of investigations about this band of the solar radiation and its effects on human beings.The ultraviolet Index (UVI), which is currently internationally adopted, was defined in order to disseminate information to the public about the risks of exposing the naked body to UVR and to send preventive messages. UVI was initially defined as the maximum daily value. However, the current use of this index has been widened and nowadays it makes sense to refer to an instantaneous value or to the evolution of the measured, modelled, or predicted UVI during the day. The actual value of UVI is affected by the Sun-Earth geometry, clouds, ozone, aerosols, altitude and ground albedo. High quality UVI measurements are essential as a reference and to study long-term trends; accurate modelling techniques are needed to understand the way factors affect UVR, to predict UVI, and as a quality control of the measurements. For the UVI measurement, best accuracy is expected with data from spectroradiometers. However, since the costs of these devices are expensive, data from erythemal radiometers are more commonly available (most UVI networks are equipped with this latter type of sensors). Best UVI modelling performance is found with multi-scattering radiative transfer models when the input information is well known. However, some relevant input information, such as the aerosol optical properties, is usually not available which can lead to large modelling uncertainties. More simple models are often used for applications such as UVI prediction or elaboration of UVI maps, as they are much faster and require less input parameters.Considering this framework, the general objective of this work is to analyse the agreement that can be reached between modelled and measured UVI for cloudless conditions.For this, model-measurement comparisons are presented for different modelling techniques, for several input options, and for UVI measured by both erythemal radiometers and spectroradiometers. As a general conclusion, it can be stated that the comparison of modelled vs. measured UVI is very useful to detect limitations and estimate uncertainties in both the modelling and measurements.As far as modelling is concerned, the main limitations found are the lack of knowledge in the aerosol information considered as input. Also, important differences are found between the ozone column from satellite and from ground based measurements, which lead to important differences in the modelled UVI.PTUV, a new simple parameterisation for fast UVI calculations for cloudless conditions, has been developed based on radiative transfer calculations. The parameterisation shows a good performance both with respect to the base model and to diverse UVI measurements. PTUV has demonstrated to be useful for particular applications such as to study the annual UVI variation at a particular site (Girona) and to build high resolution maps of typical UVI for a territory (Catalonia).Regarding the measurements, it is found that the use of the actual spectral response of the erythemal radiometers is very important to avoid large uncertainties in the measured UVI. If well characterised, the erythemal radiometers compare reasonably well with high quality spectroradiometers when measuring UVI. Major issues with respect to the measurements are long term calibration accuracy and stability. Also, a temperature effect in PTFE, a material used as diffuser in some instruments, has been observed, which could have potentially important implications in the experimental field. Finally, and concerning the model-measurement comparisons, the best agreement has been found when high quality spectroradiometric UVI measurements are considered and radiative transfer models are applied taking into account the best data available regarding aerosol and ozone optical parameters and their changes in time. In this case, the agreement can be as high as 0.1% in UVI, and typically less than 3%. This agreement deteriorates greatly if aerosols are ignored, and depends importantly on the aerosol single scattering albedo. Other data, such as ground albedo or the actual atmospheric temperature and ozone profiles, introduce lower uncertainty in the modelling results.
