Modern coronagraph design relies on advanced, large-scale optimization processes that require an ever increasing amount of computational resources. In this paper, we restrict ourselves to the design of Apodized Pupil Lyot Coronagraphs (APLCs). To produce APLC designs for future giant space telescopes, we require a fine sampling for the apodizer to resolve all small features, such as segment gaps, in the telescope pupil. Additionally, we require the coronagraph to operate in broadband light and be insensitive to small misalignments of the Lyot stop. For future designs we want to include passive suppression of low-order aberrations and finite stellar diameters. The memory requirements for such an optimization would exceed multiple terabytes for the problem matrix alone. We therefore want to reduce the number of variables and constraints to minimize the size of the problem matrix. We show how symmetries in the pupil and Lyot stop are expressed in the complete optimization problem, and allow removal of both variables and constraints. Each mirror symmetry reduces the problem size by a factor of four. Secondly, we introduce progressive refinement, which uses low-resolution optimizations as a prior for higher resolutions. This lets us remove the majority of variables from the high-resolution optimization. Together these two improvements require up to 256x less computer memory, with a corresponding speed increase. This allows for greater exploration of the phase space of the focal-plane mask and Lyot-stop geometry, and easier simulation of sensitivity to Lyot-stop misalignments. We propose a new approach for high-contrast imaging at the diffraction limit using segmented telescopes in a modest observation bandwidth. This concept, named "spectroscopic fourth-order coronagraphy", is based on a fourth-order coronagraph with a focal-plane mask that modulates the complex amplitude of the Airy disk along one direction. While coronagraphs applying the complex amplitude mask can achieve the theoretical limit performance for any arbitrary pupils, the focal plane mask severely limits the bandwidth. Here, focusing on the fact that the focal-plane mask modulates the complex amplitude along one direction, we noticed that the mask can be optimized for each spectral element generated by a spectrograph. We combine the fourth-order coronagraph with two spectrographs to produce a stellar spectrum on the focal plane and reconstruct a white pupil on the Lyot stop. Based on the wavefront analysis of an optical design applying an Offner-type imaging spectrograph, we found that the achievable contrast of this concept is 10^{-10} at 1.2 - 1.5 times the diffraction limit over the wavelength range of 650 - 750 nm for the entrance pupil of the LUVOIR telescope. Thus, this coronagraph concept could bring new habitable planet candidates not only around G- and K-type stars beyond 20 - 30 pc but also around very nearby M-type stars. We propose a coronagraphic system with fourth-order null for off-axis segmented telescopes, which is sufficiently insensitive to the telescope pointing errors and finite angular diameter of the host star to enable high-contrast imaging of potentially habitable planets. The inner working angle of the coronagraphic system is close to $1\lambda/D$, and there is no outer limit. The proposed coronagraphic system is made up of a new focal plane mask and an optimized Lyot stop with the second-order null. The new focal plane mask is an extension of the band-limited masks with a phase modulation. We construct a coronagraphic system with fourth-order null by placing two of the new coronagraph systems in succession to be orthogonal to each other. The proposed system is limited to narrow-band usage. The characteristics of the proposed coronagraph system are derived analytically, which includes: (1)the leak of stellar lights due to finite stellar diameter and pointing jitter of a telescope, and (2)the peak throughput. We achieve the performance simulations of this coronagraphic system based on these analytical expressions, considering a monochromatic light of 0.75$\mathrm{\mu}$m and off-axis primary mirror with a diameter of 8.5m. Thanks to the wide working area of the mask, the result shows that terrestrial planets orbiting K and G-dwarfs can be detected under the condition that the telescope pointing jitter is less than $0.01\lambda/D\approx240$as. TolTEC is an imaging polarimeter that will be mounted on the 50m diameter Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) in Mexico. This camera simultaneously images the focal plane at three wavebands centered at 1.1, 1.4, and 2.0mm. TolTEC combines polarization-sensitive Kinetic Inductance Detectors (KIDs) with the LMT to produce 5-10 arcmin resolution maps of the sky in both total intensity and polarization. The light from the telescope is coupled to the TolTEC instrument using three room temperature mirrors. Before entering the cryostat, the light passes through a rapid-spinning achromatic half-wave plate, and once inside it passes through a 1 K Lyot stop that controls the telescope illumination. Inside the cryostat, a series of aluminum mirrors, silicon lenses, and dichroic filters split the light into three wavelength bands and direct each band to a different detector array. We will describe the design, and performance of the optics before installation at the telescope.

While an ideal optical vortex coronagraph operating behind a clear, circular, unaberrated telescope aperture can theoretically provide perfect rejection of the incident plane wave from an unresolved star, use of a telescope with an on-axis secondary mirror limits the rejection. In theory, a dual-stage vortex coronagraph can provide improved starlight rejection for an on-axis telescope, and here we provide experimental confirmation of the predicted distribution of the residual light in the output pupil plane of a dual-stage vortex coronagraph. In addition, a simple method of further improving the rejection of such a coronagraph is suggested: by slightly oversizing the first Lyot stop and phase-shifting the light within the exposed annulus by half a wave, the residual starlight within the pupil can be canceled to deeper levels.

The objective of the Evanescent Wave Coronagraph (EvWaCo) project is to develop a new kind of simple and cost effective coronagraph, first for ground-based telescopes and then for space-based telescopes. The principle involves the tunneling effect to separate the star light from the companion light. The star light is directed transmitted toward a WaveFront Sensor (WFS) that measures the wavefront distortions in the immediate proximity of the occulting mask with minimum non-common path errors. The beam reflected by the mask propagates toward the Lyot stop and forms the images of the companion and of the star residuals on the camera. The EvWaCo concept has been demonstrated and this instrument is achromatic over the I-band of the Johnson- Cousins photometric system in unpolarized light. We have measured over this photometric band an Inner Working Angle (IWA) equal to 6 λ/D and contrasts of a few 10 -6 at distances greater than 10 Airy radii from the star Point Spread Function (PSF) center. This paper describes the continuation of the project, from this setup of demonstration to the first prototype operating on the sky at horizon 2020. The objective is to show the capability of the full system to provide IWA and raw contrasts close to the state-of-art performance with the Thai National Telescope, by observing through an unobstructed elliptical pupil of major axis length equal to 1 m. The system will demonstrate over the full I-band an IWA close to 3 λ/D and raw contrasts equal to a few 10 -4 at a distance equal to the IWA from the PSF.

Imaging Earth-like exoplanets with future space telescopes will require a coronagraph instrument that is capable of creating a dark zone in the starlight at the image plane that is ten orders of magnitude fainter than the off-axis image of the host star. What is more, the coronagraph must simultaneously provide a stable dark zone and high throughput over the angular separations that correspond to habitable zones around nearby Sun-like stars (~10-100 milliarcseconds). Since the pupils of most large-aperture space telescope architectures are likely to be obstructed by secondary mirrors, spider support structures, and gaps between mirror segments, the coronagraph optics must also be specially tailored to passively suppress starlight diffracted from the obstructions and discontinuities in the telescope pupil. Here, we demonstrate an apodized vortex coronagraph optimized for an off-axis segmented telescope on the new High Contrast Spectroscopy Testbed for Segmented Telescopes (HCST) at Caltech. The coronagraph consists of a microdot apodizer, a liquid crystal vortex phase mask in the focal plane, and a Lyot stop. The microdot apodizer is an AR-coated glass window with 10um gold microdots to be used in reflection around lambda=800nm. We describe the HCST optical system; the apodizer optimization, fabrication, and metrology procedures; and present end-to-end testbed results of the coronagraph coupled with a 32x32 Boston Micromachines deformable mirror for wavefront control. We aim to achieve a dark zone 10^-7 times fainter than the simulated host star over a wavelength range of 800±40nm in Spring 2018. Finally, we will outline future plans to demonstrate coronagraph concepts for centrally obscured telescopes.

By adding a dedicated coronagraph, ESO in collaboration with the Breakthrough Initiatives, modifies the Very Large Telescope mid-IR imager (VISIR) to further boost the high dynamic range imaging capability this instru- ment has. After the VISIR upgrade in 2012, where coronagraphic masks were first added to VISIR, it became evident that coronagraphy at a ground-based 8m-class telescope critically needs adaptive optics, even at wavelengths as long as 10μm. For VISIR, a work-horse observatory facility instrument in normal operations, this is ”easiest” achieved by bringing VISIR as a visiting instrument to the ESO-VLT-UT4 having an adaptive M2. This “visit” enables a meaningful search for Earth-like planets in the habitable zone around both α-Cen1,2. Meaningful here means, achieving a contrast of ≈ 10^(-6) within ≈ 0.8arcsec from the star while maintaining basically the normal sensitivity of VISIR. This should allow to detect a planet twice the diameter of Earth. Key components will be a diffractive coronagraphic mask, the annular groove phase mask (AGPM), optimized for the most sensitive spectral band-pass in the N-band, complemented by a sophisticated apodizer at the level of the Lyot stop. For VISIR noise filtering based on fast chopping is required. A novel internal chopper system will be integrated into the cryostat. This chopper is based on the standard technique from early radio astronomy, conceived by the microwave pioneer Robert Dicke in 1946, which was instrumental for the discovery of the 3K radio background.

A long wave infrared imaging system operated for space exploration of faint target is highly sensitive to stray radiation. We present an integrative suppression process of internal and external stray radiation. A compact and re-imaging LWIR catadioptric telescope is designed as practical example and internal and external stray radiation is analyzed for this telescope. The detector is cryogenically cooled with 100% cold shield efficiency of Lyot stop. A non-sequential ray tracing technique is applied to investigate how the stray radiation propagates inside optical system. The simulation and optimization during initial design stage are proceeded to avoid subversive defect that the stray radiation disturbs the target single. The quantitative analysis of stray radiation irradiance emitted by lenses and structures inside is presented in detail. The optical elements, which operate at room-temperature due to the limitation of weight and size, turn to be the significant stray radiation sources. We propose a method combined infrared material selection and optical form optimization to reduce the internal stray radiation of lens. We design and optimize mechanical structures to achieve a further attenuation of internal stray radiation power. The point source transmittance (PST) is calculated to assess the external radiation which comes from the source out of view field. The ghost of bright target due to residual reflection of optical coatings is simulated. The results show that the performance of stray radiation suppression is dramatically improved by iterative optimization and modification of optomechanical configurations.

The High Contrast Spectroscopy Testbed for Segmented Telescopes (HCST) at Caltech is aimed at filling gaps in technology for future exoplanet imagers and providing the U.S. community with an academic facility to test components and techniques for high contrast imaging with future segmented ground-based telescope (TMT, E-ELT) and space-based telescopes (HabEx, LUVOIR). The HCST will be able to simulate segmented telescope geometries up to 1021 hexagonal segments and time-varying external wavefront disturbances. It also contains a wavefront corrector module based on two deformable mirrors followed by a classical 3-plane single-stage corona- graph (entrance apodizer, focal-plane mask, Lyot stop) and a science instrument. The back-end instrument will consist of an imaging detector and a high-resolution spectrograph, which is a unique feature of the HCST. The spectrograph instrument will utilize spectral information to characterize simulated planets at the photon-noise limit, measure the chromaticity of new optimized coronagraph and wavefront control concepts, and test the overall scientific functions of high-resolution spectrographs on future segmented telescopes.

With the recent commissioning of ground instruments such as SPHERE or GPI and future space observatories like WFIRST-AFTA, coronagraphy should probably become the most efficient tool for identifying and characterizing extra-solar planets in the forthcoming years. Coronagraphic instruments such as Phase mask coronagraphs (PMC) are usually based on a phase mask or plate located at the telescope focal plane, spreading the starlight outside the diameter of a Lyot stop that blocks it. In this communication is investigated the capability of a PMC to act as a phase-shifting wavefront sensor for better control of the achieved star extinction ratio in presence of the coronagraphic mask. We discuss the two main implementations of the phase-shifting process, either introducing phase-shifts in a pupil plane and sensing intensity variations in an image plane, or reciprocally. Conceptual optical designs are described in both cases. Numerical simulations allow for better understanding of the performance and limitations of both options, and optimizing their fundamental parameters. In particular, they demonstrate that the phase-shifting process is a bit more efficient when implemented into an image plane, and is compatible with the most popular phase masks currently employed, i.e. four-quadrants and vortex phase masks., 22 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

Context. The solar coronagraph ASPIICS will fly on the future ESA formation flying mission Proba-3. The instrument combines an external occulter of diameter 1.42 m and a Lyot solar coronagraph of 5 cm diameter, located downstream at a distance of 144 m. Aims. The theoretical performance of the externally occulted Lyot coronagraph has been computed by assuming perfect optics. In this paper, we improve related modelling by introducing roughness scattering effects from the telescope. We have computed the diffraction at the detector, that we compare to the ideal case without perturbation to estimate the performance degradation. We have also investigated the influence of sizing the internal occulter and the Lyot stop, and we performed a sensitivity analysis on the roughness. Methods. We have built on a recently published numerical model of diffraction propagation. The micro-structures of the telescope are built by filtering a white noise with a power spectral density following an isotropic ABC function, suggested by Harvey scatter theory. The parameters were tuned to fit experimental data measured on ASPIICS lenses. The computed wave front error was included in the Fresnel wave propagation of the coronagraph. A circular integration over the solar disk was performed to reconstruct the complete diffraction intensity. Results. The level of micro-roughness is 1.92 nm root-mean-square. Compared to the ideal case, in the plane of the internal occulter, the diffraction peak intensity is reduced by ≃0.001%. However, the intensity outside the peak increases by 12% on average, up to 20% at 3 R⊙, where the mask does not filter out the diffraction. At detector level, the diffraction peak remains ≃10−6 at 1.1 R⊙, similar to the ideal case, but the diffraction tail at large solar radius is much higher, up to one order of magnitude. Sizing the internal occulter and the Lyot stop does not improve the rejection, as opposed to the ideal case. Conclusions. Besides these results, this paper provides a methodology to implement roughness scattering in the wave propagation model for the solar coronagraph.

Recent efforts combining the optimization techniques of apodized pupil Lyot coronagraphs (APLC) and shaped pupils have demonstrated the viability of a binary-transmission mask architecture for extremely high contrast (10-10) exoplanet imaging. We are now building on those innovations to carry out a survey of Lyot coronagraph performance for large, segmented telescope apertures. These apertures are of the same kind under considera- tion for NASA's Large UV/Optical/IR (LUVOIR) observatory concept. To map the multi-dimensional design parameter space, we have developed a software toolkit to manage large sets of mask optimization programs and execute them on a computing cluster. Here we summarize a preliminary survey of 500 APLC solutions for 4 reference hexagonal telescope apertures. Several promising designs produce annular, 10-10 contrast dark zones down to inner working angle 4λ0=D over a 15% bandpass, while delivering a half-max PSF core throughput of 18%. We also report our progress on devising solutions to the challenges of Lyot stop alignment/fabrication tolerance that arise in this contrast regime.

The Fan Mountain Near-Infrared Camera (FanCam) provides the University of Virginia’s 31 inch telescope with a near-infrared observing capability that is relatively unique among small-aperture telescopes. FanCam features an 8.7′ × 8.7′8.7′×8.7′ field of view on a 1024 × 10241024×1024 Teledyne Imaging Sensors HAWAII-1 detector array. The instrument mounts at the f/15.5 focus of the 31 inch telescope. Its seeing-limited optical design, optimized for the JHKJHK atmospheric bands, includes a field stop at the telescope focus, a doublet collimator, two eight-position filterwheels straddling a Lyot stop, and a doublet reimager. Four fold mirrors wrap the optical path onto a compact optical bench. The 0.51″pixel-1 plate scale leads to a slightly oversampled point spread function for the typical seeing of 1.5″. The entire optical train is encased in a cryogenic dewar cooled by a closed-loop cooling system. The existing high contrast imaging techniques cannot be applied directly to the telescope of the diameter 30–100 m without taking into account the specific characteristics of a segmented surface. While the increase in telescope diameter is an advantage for the high contrast range science, the segmentation sets a limit on the performance of the coronagraph. In particular, diffraction from intersegment gaps sets a floor to the achievable extinction of the starlight. Masking out the gaps in the Lyot plane although helps increasing the contrast, does not solve completely the problem: the high spatial frequency component of the diffractive light remains. In the paper I suggest using a Lyot stop which produces a phase-amplitude modulation in order to reduce the effect of segmentation.

KASI (Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute) is developing the near-infrared camera system named KASINICS (KASI Near-Infrared Camera System) which will be installed at the 60cm f/13.5 Ritchey-Chretien telescope of the Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory (SOAO). The camera system is optimized for JHKL bands and has a 6 arcmin FOV. The optical system consists of two spherical mirrors and a 8-position filter wheel. With the exception for the dewar window, all optical elements are cooled inside cryogenic dewar. Since the Offner system is adopted to prevent thermal noises from outside of the telescope primary mirror, the secondary mirror of the Offner system acts as a cold Lyot stop. The optical performance does not change by temperature variations because the Aluminum mirrors contract and expand homogeneously with its mount. We finished the design and fabrication of the optical parts and are now aligning the optical system. We plan to have a test observation on 2006 January.

We present a study of Lyot style (i.e., classical, band-limited, and Gaussian occulter) coronagraphy on extremely large, highly-segmented telescopes. We show that while increased telescope diameter is always an advantage for high dynamic range science (assuming wavefront errors have been corrected sufficiently well), segmentation itself sets a limit on the performance of Lyot coronagraphs. Diffraction from inter-segment gaps sets a floor to the achievable extinction of on-axis starlight with Lyot coronagraphy. We derive an analytical expression for the manner in which coronagraphic suppression of an on-axis source decreases with increasing gap size when the segments are placed in a spatially periodic array over the telescope aperture, regardless of the details of the arrangement. A simple Lyot stop masking out pupil edges produces good extinction of the central peak in the point-spread function (PSF), but leaves satellite images caused by inter-segment gaps essentially unaffected. Masking out the bright segment gaps in the Lyot plane with a reticulated mask reduces the satellite images'intensity to a contrast of 5x10^{-9} on a 30 m telescope with 10 mm gaps, at the expense of an increase in the brightness of the central peak. The morphology of interesting targets will dictate which Lyot stop geometry is preferable: the reticulated Lyot stop produces a conveniently uni-modal PSF, whereas a simple Lyot stop produces an extended array of satellite spots. This paper presents a theoretical study of stellar coronagraphy with apodized entrance apertures. The study is restricted to a perfect telescope operating in space, and a monochromatic on-axis unresolved star. It is shown that linear prolate functions are the optimal apodizers for rectangular apertures in stellar coronagraphy. With the phase mask technique (Roddier & Roddier 1997), prolate functions can produce a total extinction of the star light. For Lyot's coronagraphy, the extinction is not complete, but prolate apodizations lead to an optimal star residual intensity with surprising interesting properties: the residual star light and the planet enjoy the same apodized intensity pattern (but dierent dynamic) with the optimal light concentration. With this technique, very high rejection rates can be obtained for Lyot's coronagraphy, with smaller mask sizes.

Several recent designs for planet-finding telescopes use coronagraphs operating at visible wavelengths to suppress starlight along the telescope's optical axis while transmitting any off-axis light from circumstellar material. We describe a class of graded coronagraphic image masks that can, in principle, provide perfect elimination of on-axis light, while simultaneously maximizing the Lyot stop throughput and angular resolution. These ``band-limited'' masks operate on the intensity of light in the image plane, not the phase. They can work with almost any entrance pupil shape, provided that the entrance pupil transmissivity is uniform, and can be combined with an apodized Lyot stop to reduce the sensitivity of the coronagraph to imperfections in the image mask. We discuss some practical limitations on the dynamic range of coronagraphs in the context of a space-based terrestrial planet finder (TPF) telescope, and emphasize that fundamentally, the optical problem of imaging planets around nearby stars is a matter of precision fabrication and control, not Fraunhofer diffraction theory., Comment: 24 pages, including 6 figures. The electric field conjugation (EFC) algorithm has shown promise for removing scattered starlight from high-contrast imaging measurements, both in numerical simulations and laboratory experiments. To prepare for the deployment of EFC using ground-based telescopes, we investigate the response of EFC to unaccounted for deviations from an ideal optical model. We explore the linear nature of the algorithm by assessing its response to a range of inaccuracies in the optical model generally present in real systems. We find that the algorithm is particularly sensitive to unresponsive deformable mirror (DM) actuators, misalignment of the Lyot stop, and misalignment of the focal plane mask. Vibrations and DM registration appear to be less of a concern compared to values expected at the telescope. We quantify how accurately one must model these core coronagraph components to ensure successful EFC corrections. We conclude that while the condition of the DM can limit contrast, EFC may still be used to improve the sensitivity of high-contrast imaging observations. Our results have informed the development of a full EFC implementation using the Project 1640 coronagraph at Palomar observatory. While focused on a specific instrument, our results are applicable to the many coronagraphs that may be interested in employing EFC.

Several years ago at Princeton we invented a technique to optimize shaped pupil (SP) coronagraphs for any telescope aperture. In the last year, our colleagues at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) invented a method to produce these non-freestanding mask designs on a substrate. These two advances allowed us to design SPs for two possible space telescopes for the direct imaging of exoplanets and disks, WFIRST-AFTA and Exo-C. In December 2013, the SP was selected along with the hybrid Lyot coronagraph for placement in the AFTA coronagraph instrument. Here we describe our designs and analysis of the SPs being manufactured and tested in the High Contrast Imaging Testbed at JPL.We also explore hybrid SP coronagraph designs for AFTA that would improve performance with minimal or no changes to the optical layout. These possibilities include utilizing a Lyot stop after the focal plane mask or applying large, static deformations to the deformable mirrors (nominally for wavefront correction) already in the system.

METIS, the Multi Element Telescope for Imaging and Spectroscopy, is the solar coronagraph foreseen for the ESA Solar Orbiter mission. METIS is conceived to image the solar corona from a near-Sun orbit in two different spectral bands: in the HI UV narrow band at 121.6 nm, and in the polarized visible light band (580 - 640 nm). METIS is an externally occulted coronagraph which adopts an "inverted occulted" configuration. The inverted external occulter (IEO) is a small circular aperture after which a small spherical mirror M0 rejects back the disk-light through the IEO, then an annular mirror collects the signal coming from the corona and redirects it toward the telescope secondary mirror. This paper presents the error budget analysis for this new-concept coronagraph configuration, which incorporates two different sub-channels: the UV imaging and the polarimetric visible one. The two sub-channels are sharing the telescope optics, then an interference filter transmits the UV light towards the UV detector, while the visible-light is reflected towards the polarimetric unit. The tolerance analysis is rather complex, in fact not only the optical performance for the two sub-channels has to be maintained simultaneously, but also the positions of the M0 and the occulters (IEO, internal occulter and Lyot stop), which assure the optimal disk light suppression, have to be taken into account as tolerancing parameters. To guarantee the scientific requirements are optimally fulfilled for the two sub-channels, the preliminary results of manufacturing, alignment and stability tolerance analysis for the whole instrument will be described and discussed.

We report on the design and construction of the Penn Array Receiver, a 64 element array which will be a 90 GHz facility instrument for the 100 m Green Bank Telescope. Each array element is a transition edge sensor bolometer. Detector noise will be background limited by the random arrival of photons and in one hour we expect to be able to map a 5 arcminute square of sky to 80 μ Jy at a resolution of 8 arcseconds. No feed horns are used, instead cooled high-density polyethylene lenses and a cold (3 K) Lyot stop control the illumination of the telescope. Capacitive mesh filters act as IR blockers and define a bandpass of 86-94 GHz. The array elements are spaced by 0.5 f λ so that the sky is fully sampled in a single pointing of the GBT. This significantly simplifies the scanning patterns needed for sparser arrays. The detectors are cooled to 0.25 K using a pulse tube cooler and helium sorption refrigerators. The cryogenics along with all the electronics and the computer system have been successfully operated on the GBT. By February, detailed tests on the response of the detectors will allow us to further develop the data processing techniques needed to remove atmospheric noise from the data and beam measurements of the cryostat will confirm that the optical design is correct. We are also developing better control software to automatically bias the SQUID multiplexed readout.

We present the status of MUSIC, the MUltiwavelength Sub/millimeter Inductance Camera, a new instrument for the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. MUSIC is designed to have a 14', diffraction-limited field-of-view instrumented with 2304 detectors in 576 spatial pixels and four spectral bands at 0.87, 1.04, 1.33, and 1.98 mm. MUSIC will be used to study dusty star-forming galaxies, galaxy clusters via the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, and star formation in our own and nearby galaxies. MUSIC uses broadband superconducting phased-array slot-dipole antennas to form beams, lumped-element on-chip bandpass filters to define spectral bands, and microwave kinetic inductance detectors to senseincoming light. The focal plane is fabricated in 8 tiles consisting of 72 spatial pixels each. It is coupled to the telescope via an ambient temperature ellipsoidal mirror and a cold reimaging lens. A cold Lyot stop sits at the image of the primary mirror formed by the ellipsoidal mirror. Dielectric and metal mesh filters are used to block thermal infrared and out-of-band radiation. The instrument uses a pulse tube cooler and 3He/3He/4He closed-cycle cooler to cool the focal plane to below 250 mK. A multilayer shield attenuates Earth's magnetic field. Each focal plane tile is read out by a single pair of coaxes and a HEMT amplifier. The readout system consists of 16 copies of custom-designed ADC/DAC and IF boards coupled to the CASPER ROACH platform. The Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) is a 6 m telescope designed to map the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) simultaneously at 145 GHz, 220GHz and 280GHz, The receiver in ACT, the Millimeter Bolometer Array Camera, features 1000 TES bolometers in each band, The detector performance depends critically on the total optical loading, requiring the spmover contributions from the optics to be minimal. This inspired the use of a cold Lyot stop to limit the illumination of the primary and the use of guard rings surrounding the primary and secondary reflectors. Here, we present a direct measurement of the illumination aperture for both reflectors and of the attenuation level outside the main optical path. We used a 145 GHz, 1 m W source and a chopper wheel to produce a time-varying signal with a broad heam proflle, We sampled the response of the camera for different locations of the source, placed in front and beside the primary and secondary mirrors. The aperture of the primary was measured to be 5,72 plus or minus 0,17m in diameter (95 plus or minus 3% of its geometrical size), while the aperture of the secondary yielded 2 plus or minus 0.12m in diameter. Both apertures are consistent with the optical design. Comparing to previous measurements of the beam solid angle from planet observations, we estimate an optical efficiency of 72.3 plus or minus 4,8%. We found that the attenuation outside the primary aperture was -16 plus or minus 2dB, which is below the theoretical expectations, and -22 plus or minus 1 dB outside the secondary aperture, which is consistent with simulations. These results motivated the extension of the baffles surrounding the secondary mirror, with the following reduction in detector optical loading from 2,24 pW to 188pW.

In this paper are discussed the nulling and imaging properties of monolithic pupil telescopes equipped with a focal plane waveguide array, which could be envisaged as precursor space missions for future nulling interferometers or coronagraphs searching for habitable planets outside of our solar system. Three different concepts of nulling telescopes are reviewed, namely the Super-Resolving Telescope (SRT) having multiple, non-overlapping exit sub-apertures and the Sheared-Pupil Telescope (SPT), either unmasked or masked with a Lyot stop placed at its exit pupil plane. For each case simple theoretical relationships allowing to estimate the nulling rate, Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and Inner Working Angle (IWA) of the telescope are established or recalled, and numerical simulations are conducted. The preliminary results of this study show that the most promising designs should either be a SRT of high radiometric efficiency associated with an adequate leakage calibration procedure, or a masked SPT with potentially deeper nulling rates but lower SNR, depending on what kind of performance is to be preferred., 14 pages, 6 figures

This research examines the use of modified Lyot coronagraphs with monolithic and segmented infrared telescopic systems for imaging nonsolar planets. These systems are investigated with the aim of reducing the effects of stellar diffracted energy on the planet image in the final image plane. A square telescope objective is best for this purpose. The associated coronagraph is composed of a cross-shaped apodizer in the first focal plane and either a square Lyot stop or circular corner Lyot stops in the corners of the pupil plane. We examine the consequences of segmenting the aperture and the effects of various segment spacings and random piston and tilt errors of the individual segments. A system to correct for the misalignments is proposed.

An eight-octant phase-mask (EOPM) coronagraph is one of the highest performance coronagraphic concepts, and attains simultaneously high throughput, small inner working angle, and large discovery space. However, its application to ground-based telescopes such as the Subaru Telescope is challenging due to pupil geometry (thick spider vanes and large central obstruction) and residual tip-tilt errors. We show that the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics (SCExAO) system, scheduled to be installed onto the Subaru Telescope, includes key technologies which can solve these problems. SCExAO uses a spider removal plate which translates four parts of the pupil with tilted plane parallel plates. The pupil central obstruction can be removed by a pupil remapping system similar to the PIAA optics already in the SCExAO system, which could be redesigned with no amplitude apodization. The EOPM is inserted in the focal plane to divide a stellar image into eight-octant regions, and introduces a π-phase difference between adjacent octants. This causes a self-destructive interference inside the pupil area on a following reimaged pupil plane. By using a reflective mask instead of a conventional opaque Lyot stop, the stellar light diffracted outside the pupil can be used for a coronagraphic low-order wave-front sensor to accurately measure and correct tip-tilt errors. A modified inverse-PIAA system, located behind the reimaged pupil plane, is used to remove off-axis aberrations and deliver a wide field of view. We show that this EOPM coronagraph architecture enables high contrast imaging at small working angle on the Subaru Telescope. Our approach could be generalized to other phase-mask type coronagraphs and other ground-based telescopes.

The balloon-borne PIPER instrument will observe the polarization in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at 200, 270, 350, and 600 GHz. Two co-pointed telescopes are placed inside a 3000 L liquid helium dewar and cooled to 1.5 K. The telescopes are arranged so that one measures Stokes parameters Q and V while the other measures U and V . Each telescope consists of a variable-delay polarization modulator (VPM) as the primary optical element, two off-axis mirrors, a folding flat, and re-imaging optics with off-axis lenses that focus each of the orthogonal linear polarization signals through an analyzer grid and onto two bolometer arrays (one for each polarization state). A cold Lyot stop is imaged onto the VPM to define the entrance pupil of the telescope. Each telescope has a 6° × 4.7° field-of-view.

The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) is building the KASI Near Infrared Camera System (KASINICS) for the 61-cm telescope at the Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory (SOAO) in Korea. With KASINICS we will mostly do time monitoring observations, e.g., thermal variations of Jovian planet atmospheres, variable stars, and blazars. We use a 512 x 512 InSb array (Aladdin III Quadrant, Raytheon Co.) for L-band observations as well as J, H, and Ks-bands. The field-of-view of the array is 6 x 6 arcmin with 0.7 arcsec/pixel. Since the SOAO 61cm telescope was originally designed for visible band observations, we adopt an Offner relay optical system with a Lyot stop to eliminate thermal background emission from the telescope structures. In order to minimize weight and volume, and to overcome thermal contraction problems, we optimize the mechanical design of the camera using the finiteelement-method (FEM) analysis. Most of the camera parts including the mirrors are manufactured from the same melt of aluminum alloy to ensure homologous contraction from room temperature to 70 K. We also developed a new control electronics system for the InSb array (see the other paper by Cho et al. in this proceedings). KASINICS is now under the performance test and planned to be in operation at the end of 2006.

A possible system for imaging an exo-planet uses a telescope, coronagraphic mask, and Lyot stop. However, the optics must be nearly flawless for a planet to be imaged, since imperfections cause the image to have speckles which mask the planet. The speckle pattern can be suppressed by removing its phase with an adaptive optic and by reimaging it through a lens with a small, central obscuration. We show how phase diversity can be used to determine the phase.

One of the science drivers for the extremely large telescope (ELT) is imaging and spectroscopy of exo-solar planets located as close as 20mas to their parent star. The application requires a well thought-out design of the high contrast imaging instrumentation. Several working coronagraphic concepts have already been developed for the monolithic telescope with the diameter up to 8 meter. Nevertheless the conclusions made about the performance of these systems cannot be applied directly to the telescope of the diameter 30-100m. The existing schemes are needed to be reconsidered taking into account the specific characteristics of a segmented surface. We start this work with the classical system ? Lyot coronagraph. We show that while the increase in telescope diameter is an advantage for the high contrast range science, the segmentation sets a limit on the performance of the coronagraph. Diffraction from intersegment gaps sets a floor to the achievable extinction of the starlight. Masking out the bright segment gaps in the Lyot plane although helps increasing the contrast, does not solve completely the problem: the high spatial frequency component of the diffractive light remains. We suggest using the Lyot stop which acts on the light within gaps in order to produce the uniform illumination in the Lyot plane. We show that for the diffraction limit regime and a perfect phasing this type of coronagraph achieves a sufficient star light extinction., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, SPIE conference 5905, 2005

WIRCam (Wide-field InfraRed Camera) is a near-infrared (0.9-2.4 microns) camera developed for the prime focus of the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), a 3.6-m telescope located on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. WIRCam is based on 4 x 2048x2048 HAWAII2RG arrays, developed by Rockwell. The camera provides a 0.3"/pixel sampling, and the close packaging of the detectors allows to cover an almost contiguous field-of-view of 20.5' x 20.5'. All optical elements are assembled in a cryovessel and cooled down to 85K by a He closed cycle cryogenerator. The two filter wheels have capacity for 8 filters (110 mm in diameter), cooled at low temperature together with the Lyot stop. These wheels are mounted on sapphire ball bearings and powered by external motors. Passive spring indexers define their positioning. A fused-silica tip/tilt plate powered by voice coil type motors provides image stabilization in front of the cryovessel. It compensates for flexures as well as for low frequency telescope oscillations from wind shake. This paper describes the overall architecture of the camera, giving the optical estimated performances and details some specific points of the design such as filter wheels, thermal connections, etc.

In the context of high dynamic range imaging, this study presents a breakthrough for the understanding of Apodized Pupil Lyot Coronagraphs, making them available for arbitrary aperture shapes. These new solutions find immediate application in current, ground-based coronagraphic studies (Gemini, VLT) and in existing instruments (AEOS Lyot Project). They also offer the possiblity of a search for an on-axis design for TPF. The unobstructed aperture case has already been solved by Aime et al. (2002) and Soummer et al. (2003). Analytical solutions with identical properties exist in the general case and, in particular, for centrally obscured apertures. Chromatic effects can be mitigated with a numerical optimization. The combination of analytical and numerical solutions enables the study of the complete parameter space (central obstruction, apodization throughput, mask size, bandwidth, and Lyot stop size)., Comment: 7 pages 4 figures - ApJL, accepted

Traditional coronagraph design is reviewed and extended to the case of arbitrary pupil geometries with adaptive optics (AO). By selecting a desired focal plane occulting mask and specifying the expected Strehl ratio achieved by the AO system, the design for a matched Lyot stop is given. The outline of the optimum Lyot stop is derived using general considerations of the residual halo from an on-axis source, as well as by maximizing the signal-to-noise ratio. A continuous transmission variant of the optimum Lyot stop is also found by means of a heuristic argument. It is suggested that essentially the same result may be found using a matched-filter analog from signal processing theory. The resulting Lyot stops for multi-segment telescope apertures can be quite unexpected, and a case with six circular segments is considered as an example.

The presence of optical aberrations in the entrance pupil of a coronagraph causes the stellar light to scatter about the occulting spot, reducing the effective contrast achievable. Even if these aberrations are sufficiently corrected with a deformable mirror to enable planet detection, small drifts in the optical alignment of the telescope introduce additional low-order aberrations. The design parameters of the coronagraph itself (e.g. occulting spot size, Lyot stop diameter, etc.) affect how these aberrations impact the contrast in the focal plane. In this study, we examine the sensitivity of contrast to low-order optical errors for several coronagraph concepts over their respective design parameters. By combining these sensitivities with the telescope throughput, we show that for each coronagraph concept there is an optimum selection of the design parameters that provides efficient, high-contrast imaging at the inner working distance in the presence of alignment errors.

In order to extend the US Naval Observatory (USNO) small-angle astrometric capabilities to near infrared wavelengths we have designed and manufactured a 1024 x 1024 InSb re-imaging infrared camera equipped with an array selected from the InSb ALADDIN (Advanced Large Area Detector Development in InSb) development program and broadband and narrowband 0.8 - 3.8 μm filters. Since the USNO 1.55-m telescope is optimized for observations at visible wavelengths with an oversized secondary mirror and sky baffles, the straylight rejection capabilities of the ASTROCAM Lyot stop and baffles are of critical importance for its sensitivity and flat- fielding capabilities. An Offner relay was chosen for the heart of the system and was manufactured from the same melt of aluminum alloy to ensure homologous contraction from room temperature to 77 K. A blackened cone was installed behind the undersized hole (the Lyot stop) in the Offner secondary. With low distortion, a well-sampled point spread function, and a large field of view, the system is well suited for astrometry. It is telecentric, so any defocus will not result in a change of image scale. The DSP-based electronics allow readout of the entire array with double-correlated sampling in 0.19 seconds, but shorter readout is possible with single sampling or by reading out only small numbers of subarrays. In this paper we report on the optical, mechanical, and electronic design of the system and present images and results on the sensitivity and astrometric stability obtained with the system, now operating routinely at the 1.55-m telescope with a science-grade ALADDIN array.

The availability of both large aperture telescopes and large format near-infrared (NIR) detectors are making wide-field NIR imaging a reality. We describe the Wide-field Infrared Camera (WIRC), a newly commissioned instrument that provides the Palomar 200-inch telescope with such an imaging capability. WIRC features a field-of-view (FOV) of 4.33 arcminutes on a side with its currently installed 1024-square Rockwell Hawaii-I NIR detector. A 2048-square Rockwell Hawaii-II NIR detector will be installed and commissioned later this year, in collaboration with Caltech, to give WIRC an 8.7 arcminute FOV on a side. WIRC mounts at the telescope's f/3.3 prime focus. The instrument's seeing-limited optical design, optimized for the JHK atmospheric bands, includes a 4-element refractive collimator, two 7-position filter wheels that straddle a Lyot stop, and a 5-element refractive f/3 camera. Typical seeing-limited point spread functions are slightly oversampled with a 0.25 arcsec per pixel plate scale at the detector. The entire optical train is contained within a cryogenic dewar with a 2.5 day hold-time. Entrance hatches at the top of the dewar allow access to the detector without disruption of the optics and optical alignment. The optical, mechanical, cryogenic, and electronic design of the instrument are described, a commissioning science image and performance analyses are presented.

We discuss intermediary results of our on-going study of filled aperture coronagraphic imaging methods for detection and characterization of extra-solar planets from a space-based telescope. Chosen are three high contrast imaging methods which are currently under investigation as part of NASA's Terrestrial Planet Finder study. Developed are analytical and computational models for three techniques that include: (i) an apodized square aperture telescope, (ii) Lyot stop coronagraph, and (iii) Spergel/Kasdin pupil. Each of the techniques is quantitatively compared and contrasted utilizing the in-pixel contrast ratio, signal-to-noise, and detection zone as metrics. The results are parameterized with respect to planetary to angular separation, planet to stellar luminosity ratio, and aperture or baseline size. We ultimately desire a compact formalism to compare and contrast different techniques, for extra-solar planetary detection, on equal footing, from an optical detection theory point of view.

The 4m Advance Technology Solar Telescope (ATST) will be the most powerful solar telescope in the world, providing a unique scientific tool to study the Sun and possibly other astronomical objects, such as solar system planets. We briefly summarize the science drivers and observational requirements of ATST. The main focus of this paper is on the many technical challenges involved in designing a large aperture solar telescope. The ATST project has entered the design and development phase. Development of a 4-m solar telescope presents many technical challenges. Most existing high-resolution solar telescopes are designed as vacuum telescopes to avoid internal seeing caused by the solar heat load. The large aperture drives the ATST to an open-air design, similar to night-time telescope designs, and makes thermal control of optics and telescope structure a paramount consideration. A heat stop must reject most of the energy (13 kW) at prime focus without introducing internal seeing. To achieve diffraction-limited observations at visible and infrared wavelengths, ATST will have a high order (order 1000 DoF) adaptive optics system using solar granulation as the wavefront sensing target. Coronal observations require occulting in prime focus, a Lyot stop and contamination control of the primary. An initial set of instruments will be designed as integral part of the telescope. First telescope design and instrument concepts will be presented.

We describe the adaptive optical (AO) requirements, optical design, and expected performance of a near-infrared AO coronagraph for a 30 meter class giant telescope. The optical design of the instrument consists of back-to-back finite conjugate relays, each containing a collimated space between a pair of toric mirrors. The first collimated space contains the atmospheric dispersion compensator and the AO components, which are a tip/tilt mirror, a MEMS deformable mirror, and a beamsplitter for the wavefront sensing path. An occulting disk or similar focal plane mask is located at the intermediate image between the two relays, and a Lyot stop is placed at the pupil plane in the second relay. The required AO order of correction for a Strehl ratio of 0.9 at a wavelength of 2.2 microns is about 150 by 150, and the required control bandwidth is 42 Hz. The limiting magnitude at this level of performance is estimated to be 10.4.

The Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) instrument is a 10-channel earth limb-viewing sensor that measures atmospheric emissions in the spectral range of 1.27 μm to 16.9 μm. SABER is part of NASA's Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) mission, which was successfully launched in December 2001. Uncommon among limb-viewing sensors, SABER employs an on-axis telescope design with reimaging optics to allow for an intermediate field stop and a Lyot stop. Additional stray light protection is achieved by an innovative inner Lyot stop, which is placed conjugate to the secondary obscuration and support structure. Presented in this paper is the off-axis response of SABER as measured in the Terrestrial Black Hole off-axis scatter facility at the Space Dynamics Laboratory. The measurement was made at visible wavelengths; thus, the response is only representative of SABER's short wavelength channels. The measurement validated the stray light design and complemented the APART software model, which predicts that mirror scatter is the dominant stray light mechanism at short wavelengths. In addition, estimates of the mirror bi-directional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) were made. The off-axis response measurement indicates that SABER is an exceptional stray light suppression telescope.

The ongoing development of large infrared array detectors has enabled wide field, deep surveys to be undertaken. There are, however, a number of challenges in building an infrared instrument which has both excellent optical quality and high sensitivity over a wide field. We discuss these problems in the context of building a wide field imaging camera for the 3.5m telescope at Calar Alto with the new 2K*2K HgCdTe HAWAII-2 focal plane array. Our final design is a prime focus camera with a 15' field-of-view, called Omega 2000. To achieve excellent optical quality over the whole field, we have had to dispense with the reimaging optics and cold Lyot stop. We show that creative baffling schemes, including the use of undersized baffles, can compensate for the lost K band sensitivity. The Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) instrument is a 10-channel earth limb- viewing sensor that is to measure atmospheric emissions in the spectral range of 1.27 micrometer to 16.9 micrometer. Presented in this paper is the stray light design and analysis of SABER. Unwanted radiation from the earth and atmosphere are suppressed by the use of stray light features that are critical to mission success. These include the use of an intermediate field stop, an inner and outer Lyot stop, and super-polished mirrors. The point source normalized irradiance transmission (PSNIT) curve, which characterizes the sensor's off-axis response, was computed using the stray light analysis program APART. An initial calculation of the non-rejected radiance (NRR) due to emissions and scatter from the earth and atmosphere was made using the PSNIT data. The results indicate that stray light will not impede the mission objectives.

Phase masks coronagraphs can be seen as linear systems that spatially redistribute, in the pupil plane, the energy collected by the telescope. Most of the on-axis light must ideally be rejected outside the aperture to be blocked with a Lyot stop, while almost all off-axis light must go through it. The unobstructed circular apertures of off-axis telescopes make this possible but all major telescopes are however on-axis and the performance of these coronagraphs is dramatically reduced by the central obstruction. Their performance can be restored by using an additional optimally designed apodizer that changes the amplitude in the first pupil plane so that the on-axis light is rejected outside the obstructed aperture of the telescope. The numerical optimization model is built by maximizing the apodizer's transmission while setting constraints on the extremum values of the electric field that the Lyot stop does not block. The coronagraphic image is compared to what a non-apodized phase mask coronagraph provides and an analysis is made of the trade-offs that exist between the apodizer transmission and the Lyot stop properties. The existence of a solution and the mask transmission depend on the aperture and the Lyot stop geometries, and on the constraints that are set on the on-axis attenuation. The system throughput is a concave function of the Lyot stop transmission. In the case of a VLT-like aperture, apodizers with a transmission of 0.16 to 0.92 associated with a four-quadrant phase mask provide contrast as low as a few 1e-10 at 1 lambda/D from the star. The system's maximum throughput is 0.64, for an apodizer with an 0.88 transmission and a Lyot stop with a 0.69 transmission. Optimizing apodizers for a vortex phase mask requires computation times much longer than in the previous case, and no result is presented for this mask., 16 pages

This paper describes the design of a 10-channel infrared (1.27 to 16.9 micrometers ) radiometer instrument known as SABER (sounding of the atmosphere using broadband emission radiometry) that will measure earth-limb emissions from the TIMED (thermosphere- ionosphere-mesosphere energetics and dynamics) satellite. The instrument telescope, designed to reject stray light from the earth and the atmosphere, is an on-axis Cassegrain design with a clam shell reimager and a one-axis scan mirror. The telescope is cooled below 210 K by a dedicated radiator. The focal plane assembly (consisting of a filter array, a detector array, a Lyot stop, and a window) is cooled to 75 K by a miniature cryogenic refrigerator. The conductive heat load on the refrigerator is minimized by a Kevlar support system that thermally isolates the focal plane assembly from the telescope. Kevlar is also used to thermally isolate the telescope from the spacecraft. Instrument responsivity drifts due to changes in telescope and focal plane temperatures as well as other causes are neutralized by an in-flight calibration system. The detector array consists of discrete HgCdTe, InSb, and InGaAs detectors. Two InGaAs detectors are a new long wavelength type, made by EG&G, that have a long wavelength cutoff of 2.33 micrometers at 77 K.

The MSTI-3 sensor package is a three band imaging telescope for military and dual use sensing missions. The MSTI-3 mission is one of the Air Force Phillips Laboratory's Pegasus launched space missions, a third in the series of state-of-the-art lightweight sensors on low cost satellites. The satellite is planned for launch into a 425 Km orbit in late 1995. The MSTI- 3 satellite is configured with a down looking two axis gimbal and gimbal mirror. The gimbal mirror is an approximately 13 cm by 29 cm mirror which allows a field of regard approximately 100 degrees by 180 degrees. The optical train uses several novel optical features to allow for compactness and light weight. A 105 mm Ritchey Chretien Cassegrain imaging system with a CaF2 dome astigmatism corrector is followed by a CaF2 beamsplitter cube assembly at the systems first focus. The dichroic beamsplitter cube assembly separates the light into a visible and two IR channels of approximately 2.5 to 3.3, (SWIR), and 3.5 to 4.5, (MWIR), micron wavelength bands. The two IR imaging channels each consist of unity power re-imaging lens cluster, a cooled seven position filter wheel, a cooled Lyot stop and an Amber 256 X 256 InSb array camera. The visible channel uses a unity power re- imaging system prior to a linear variable filter with a Sony CCD array, which allows for a multispectral imaging capability in the 0.5 to 0.8 micron region. This study examines the impact of optical aberration and detector spatial quantization on the detection of nonsolar earth-like planets. It describes the use of a Lyot coronagraph/CCD based system implemented on a space-based segmented telescope platform. The coronagraph consists of a cross shaped apodizer in the first focal plane followed by a 75% transmission circular corner Lyot stop at the pupil plane. At the final focus plane, a 2D CCD focal plane array is introduced. The pixel elements on the CCD are varied in size to examine the degrading aspects of finite spatial quantization. Performance results are described in terms of three detectability metrics evaluated for various star-to-planet separations. Robustness of these metrics to segmentation phasing and tilt errors in the primary mirror are discussed. The effect of planet placement within a pixel on signal variability and the utility of detectability metrics is also examined.

The APART/PADE program is used to examine whether the SIRTF aperture stop can be moved back to the primary mirror without jeopardizing the requirement for natural background-limited observations. The straylight performance of the baseline design, which has the aperture stop at the secondary mirror, is compared to that of a revised design with the stop at the primary mirror. Both designs include reimaging optics and a LYOT stop, as well as a chopping secondary mirror. The straylight due to off-axis sources and telescope thermal emission is investigated at 50 and 550 microns. It is found that in SIRTF, where every instrument will include reimaging optics and a LYOT stop, the aperture stop may be moved to the primary mirror with modest degradation of the straylight performance.

The detection of faint light sources very close to a bright star is primarily limited by light scattered by the Earth's atmosphere. This source of scattered light can now be reduced by means of adaptive optics, or totally eliminated by using a telescope in space. Then diffraction by the telescope aperture becomes the primary source of scattered light. Whereas a classical Lyot coronograph can reduce the amount of light diffracted away from the star, it becomes inefficient very close to the star. Instead of forming the stellar image on an opaque mask, it is proposed here to use a small phase plate which produces a 180 degrees phase shift on the core of the stellar image. Light diffracted outside the core is then eliminated by destructive interference. Applied to the Hubble Space Telescope, the technique would easily allow detection of a stellar companion 0.3" away from a star and at least 8 magnitude fainter.
