While green innovation has a positive impact on firms' performance, some established firms that initiate green innovation activities (referring to diversifying green entrants) could suffer from insufficient new green knowledge and skills. Since adopting a sustainability orientation helps firms commit to the creation of superior sustainable practices, and efficiently invest resources necessary to develop appropriate new green products, leading to superior green innovation performance, sustainability orientation offers an alternative approach for diversifying green entrants to achieve green innovation success. Building on resource-based, knowledge-based, and capabilities theories, this study aims to identify key factors that enable sustainability orientation of diversifying green entrants and enhance its effect on green innovation performance. As sustainability issues frequently occur upstream at the supplier level, and since supplier involvement effectively determines new product success, this study theorizes that diversifying green entrants that adopt sustainability orientation require two types of green supplier involvement (as a knowledge source and a co-creator) to enhance the effect of sustainability orientation on green innovation performance. Green knowledge-processing capability and green R&D capability complement green supplier involvement as a knowledge source and green supplier involvement as a co-creator, respectively, to further enhance the amount of green innovation performance. Based on a longitudinal dataset of 336 diversifying green entrants, the results support all our hypotheses. Interestingly, an additional analysis suggests that when diversifying green entrants implement green supplier involvement as a co-creator, they achieve greater green innovation performance than those who implement green supplier involvement as a knowledge source. This study investigates two types of firm capabilities (network and innovation) that could enhance the effects of open innovation activities (inbound and outbound) on radical innovation with the consideration of environmental dynamism. Based on a cross-industry survey of 201 Asian firms, we find that the effectiveness of firm capabilities and open innovation activities is contingent on the level of environmental dynamism. Specifically, when the level of environmental dynamism increases, inbound activities, network capabilities, and innovation capabilities are able to enhance radical innovation. In addition, the level of environmental dynamism moderates the effect of network capabilities on both inbound and outbound activities in creating radical innovation, but not so with the effect of innovation capabilities. Overall, this study contributes to the open innovation literature by shedding light on important complementarities between inbound/outbound activities and specific types of firm-enabled capabilities (network and innovation) under conditions of environmental dynamism. Purpose Building on the socio-cultural theory and the climate literature, the purpose of this paper is to examine: how to effectively manage computer-mediated platforms to improve innovation performance, and which types of computer-mediated platforms firms should be more involved with.Design/methodology/approach The multivariate mediated regression method and relative effect analysis were employed to test the model.Findings Analyses reveal that online creative climate mediates the effects of the perceived innovation policy on both novelty and meaningfulness of creative behaviors. In addition, online creative climate is positively related to both radical and incremental innovation performance. Further, the relative performance results of the four types of computer-mediated platforms are found to be unequal.Practical implications The results suggest to managers that establishing creative climates in computer-mediated platforms is a promising approach to improve firms’ innovation performance. The results further indicate that managers should acknowledge the advantages and limitations of each type of computer-mediated platform in order to increase innovation performance. Otherwise, firms may misallocate resources and investment efforts in computer-mediated platforms.Originality/value By categorizing computer-mediated platforms into four types, this study provides the first synthesis of personal interactions that occur in computer-mediated environments. Purpose - This study aims to examine the roles of dynamic innovation capabilities and open innovation activities in breakthrough innovation. Drawing from the absorptive capacity perspective, organizational inertia theory, and open innovation, the authors seek to argue that dynamic innovation capabilities have a curvilinear effect on breakthrough innovation that is moderated by open innovation activities. Design/methodology/approach - A mail survey was sent to the top 1,000 firms in Taiwan, the target respondents being senior managers with experience in developing at least three successful breakthrough innovations in the past five years. A total of 218 usable questionnaires were collected, resulting in a respondent rate of 22.9 percent. Findings - The findings support the argument that dynamic innovation capabilities have an inverted U-shape relationship with breakthrough innovation. Meanwhile, open innovation activities strengthen the positive effects of dynamic innovation capabilities on breakthrough innovation. Research limitations/implications - The findings enrich the existing literature by proposing and confirming empirically that open innovation activities help firms with effective coordination of dynamic innovation capabilities. Practical implications - Managers must be aware of the limitations of their existing dynamic innovation capabilities in terms of developing breakthrough innovation. Originality/value - This study not only resolves the conflicting views about the relationship between dynamic capabilities and innovation but also adds to the existing literature that indicates the failure of leading firms in the face of rapid environmental change. An online brand community (OBC) is one of the most important sources of creativity in modern times. While there is substantial evidence concerning both OBCs and creativity, there remains little understanding of how new product creativity is enhanced in an OBC. The results of a survey of 208 paired usable questionnaires (from each firm's NPD executive and OBC member), reveal that before interacting with creativity capabilities, a creative climate of OBCs can only impact meaningfulness of new product creativity. However, the interaction of a creative climate of OBCs and creativity capabilities has direct impact on both novelty and meaningfulness of new product creativity. Purpose – The present study aims to develop a measure of the market-creating service innovation (MCSI) proposed by Berry et al., verify the typology, identify the relationship between MCSI and each new service development (NSD) stage, and assess the degree to which the role of customers involved in each NSD stage contributes to each type of MCSI. Design/methodology/approach – A mail survey was sent to service companies in Taiwan, the target respondents being senior managers with experience in developing successful new services in the past three years. A total of 179 usable questionnaires were collected, resulting in a respondent rate of 21.2 per cent. The responses covered a wide range of service industries. Findings – The present study confirms that the four MCSIs proposed by Berry et al. do indeed exist in practice. The degree of association between each NSD stage and each type of MCSI varies according to MCSI type. The statistical weights for customers involved in each type of MCSI are also different. Research limitations/implications – This study extends a theoretical mechanism of NSD that customers indeed contribute to service innovation, but their involvement varies depending on the characteristics of the service innovation. Practical implications – Utilizing a new scale of MCSI, service providers can evaluate what types of MCSI are a better fit for their business. Originality/value – This study provides a better understanding of MCSI, which helps service providers to properly allocate their limited resources. The phenomenon of product re-innovation has often characterized Taiwanese high-technology firms over the last decade. However, the literature reflects surprisingly little effort to understand their preconditions. Based on extant knowledge and 68 field interviews with managers in diverse departments and firms of high-technology industries in Taiwan in mid-2006, the authors provide a foundation for future research by developing research propositions that relate to preconditions for product re-innovation.
