The aim of the research unit Memristive Devices for Neuronal Systems is to develop, manufacture and understand microelectronic devices that can change their electrical resistance repeatedly and reversibly dependent on their history of operation, commonly called memristors. In the framework of this research unit this work was conducted and encompasses the complete procedure of micro- and nanostructural analysis starting with the sample preparation for transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the methods of analysis and concludes with the results and their interpretation. Besides conceptualization, fabrication and functional probing, the analysis described in this study is essential for understanding the mode of action and validation of expected results. Out of the various concepts for memristors, the most promising ones pursued within this research unit are a combined aluminum oxide tunnel barrier and a niobium oxide Schottky barrier – in short called double barrier device – and a bimetallic nanoparticle based electrochemical metallization cell (EMC) approach. Besides all-electronic memristors other approaches utilize non-linear sensor devices – e.g. gas or pressure sensors – to combine memristors and sensors into memsensors. The devices allow a sensor to "acclimatize" to baseline stimuli but still react to changes from this baseline input to report deviations. First concepts for these devices based on highly porous CdTe or InP microstructures have been investigated for the crystallinity and chemical impurities under different growth conditions. The investigations led to a deeper understanding of the fabrication process and the mechanisms of memristive switching ultimately enabling improvement of device design and fabrication. Das Ziel der Forschergruppe „Memristive Bauelemente für neuronale Systeme“ ist es, mikroelektronische Bauelemente zu entwickeln und produzieren, welche ihren elektrischen Widerstand wiederholt und reversibel ändern können; im Sprachgebrauch werden diese Bauelemente Memristoren genannt. Im Rahmen dieser Forschergruppe entstand diese Arbeit, welche das komplette Vorgehen der mikro- und nanostrutkurellen Analyse umreißt, von der Probenpräparation für das Transmissionelektronenmikroskop (TEM) über die analytischen Methoden bis hin zu den Ergebnisse und ihrer Interpretation. Neben der konzeptionellen Entwicklung, der Herstellung und der funktionellen Untersuchung der Memristoren sind die hier beschriebenen Forschungsergebnisse essentiell, um deren Wirkweise zu verstehen und die nach der Herstellung erwarteten Ergebnisse zu validieren. Von den vielen verschiedenen Konzepten, welche es für Memristoren gibt, stechen zwei als besonders vielversprechend hervor, welche in der Forschergruppe fokussiert untersucht wurden. Zum einen handelt es sich dabei um ein sogenanntes „Doppelbarrieren“-Bauelement, welches eine Aluminiumoxid-Tunnelbarriere mit einer Nioboxid-Schottkybarriere kombiniert, zum anderen ein auf bimetallischen Nanopartikeln basierte elektrochemische Metallisierungszelle. Neben den rein elektrischen Memristoren gibt es auch Ansätze, welche Sensoren und Memristoren miteinander zu verheiraten versuchen. Hierzu zählen zum Beispiel Gas- und Drucksensoren, welche sich an ein Grundniveau „gewöhnen“ können, und trotzdem auf Veränderungen von diesem Niveau anspringen. Erste Konzepte für diese Bauelemente bestehen aus hochporösen CdTe- oder InP-Mikrostrukturen und wurden auf ihre Kristallinität und Zusammensetzung unter verschiedenen Herstellungsbedingungen untersucht. Die Ergebnisse führten insgesamt zu einem tieferen Verständnis der Herstellungsprozesse und der zugrundeliegenden memristiven Schaltmechanismen. Ultimativ ebnet dies den Weg, sowohl Design als auch Herstellung der Bauelemente zu verbessern.

Since the postulation of the experimental realization of memristive devices in 2008, a broad variety of concepts for the fabrication of memristive devices has been pursued and the underlying switching mechanisms have been studied in detail. The unique electronic properties of memristive devices inspire applications that go beyond conventional electronics, such as using memristive devices as programmable interconnects, to realize logics for in-array-computing or in neuromorphic engineering. A particularly interesting aspect of biological neural networks is the close connection between signal detection and processing at the neuron level, which is an essential contribution to their outstanding efficiency. This work evolves around the concept of memsensors, which unify the characteristic features of memristive devices and sensor devices and as such appear as promising candidates to realize a close connection between signal detection and processing on the device level. Memsensors are a highly interdisciplinary topic, bridging research in the fields of material science and electrical engineering and relating to insights from biology and medicine through neuromorphic engineering. The major objective of this thesis is to provide tools and building blocks and showcase pathways to incorporate memristive and sensitive properties into memsensor devices. For this purpose, motivated by an experimental point of view, a nanoparticle-based memristive device with diffusive memristive switching characteristics was developed and characterised in detail and sensors relying on semiconducting metal oxide thin films and nanostructures were thoroughly studied. In addition, in terms of modelling of memsensor circuits, emerging features such as amplitude adaptation are discussed, showcasing the particular eligibility of memsensors in the context of neuromorphic engineering.

Der ∆E-Effekt magnetoelastischer Materialien beschreibt die Veränderung des Elastizitätsmoduls E in einem Magnetfeld und kann somit als Eingangsgröße zur Messung von Magnetfeldern genutzt werden. Mit dem Ziel eines möglichst leistungsfähigen Magnetfeldsensors werden in dieser Arbeit die einzelnen Prozesse innerhalb des Sensorsystems untersucht. Zunächst wird dazu der ∆E-Effekt selbst und seine Abhängigkeit von Materialeigenschaften genauer betrachtet. Zur Messung der veränderten mechanischen Eigenschaften werden verschiedene mikromechanische Systeme auf Basis von Resonatoren und Oberflächenwellen erprobt. Deren Auslegung bestimmt die Umsetzung des ∆E-Effekts eines amorphen Dünnfilms in ein elektrisches Signal. Das erste Prinzip beruht dabei auf der Verstimmung von elektromechanischen Resonatoren in Form von piezoelektrisch angeregten Biegebalken. Die technische Ausführung der Resonatoren und die sich daraus ergebenen elektromechanischen Eigenschaften werden theoretisch und praktisch untersucht. In dem zweiten Ansatz werden Oberflächenwellen auf einer Seite des Sensors erzeugt und nach dem Durchqueren einer magnetisch beschichteten Verzögerungsstrecke wieder aufgezeichnet. Dabei führt die magnetoelastische Veränderung des Schermoduls zu einer veränderten Laufzeit. Das Verhalten beider Sensortypen wird in Teilmodellen beschrieben und schließlich zu einem Gesamtsystem inklusive der elektronischen Betriebskomponenten zusammengefügt. Beide Bauformen erreichen äquivalente magnetische Rauschgrenzen von ca. 100 pT bei Frequenzen oberhalb von 10 Hz und einer Messbandbreite von 1 Hz. The ∆E-effect in magnetoelastic materials describes the change in elastic modulus E in a magnetic field and can therefore be utilized for the measurement of magnetic fields. With the aim of developing a high-performance magnetic field sensor, the separate subprocesses within the sensor system are examined. Starting with the ∆E-effect itself, its mechanism and dependencies on material properties are investigated. To measure the changes in the mechanical properties of the magnetic material, different micromechanical systems based on resonators and surface waves are tested. Their technical designs determine the conversion of changes in the mechanical properties of a magnetic thin film to an electrical signal. The first principle is based on the detuning of electromechanical resonators in the form of piezoelectrically driven cantilevers. Their design is elaborated on, and the resulting electromechanical properties are tested. In the second approach, surface waves are created at one end of the sensor and detected at the other end after passing through a magnetically covered delay line. Here, the magnetoelastic coupling alters the shear modulus that leads to a change of the wave velocity. The behavior of both sensor types is described in submodules and finally combined with electronics to form a complete sensor system. Both approaches achieve an equivalent magnetic noise level of about 100 pT for frequencies above 10 Hz at a bandwidth of 1 Hz.

The most impressive properties of the human brain are widely acknowledged as being perception and consciousness. While the underlying mechanisms are not yet understood, it is very likely that neural dynamics, in connection with the topology of neural networks, may play a decisive role. Neuromorphic systems offer an interesting approach to emulate and model these processes, as they allow the complexity of neural networks to be mapped onto energy-efficient and real-time capable systems. For this purpose, analogue electrical circuits that are oriented as closely as possible to biological networks are investigated. Electronic devices are particularly important for this purpose, as they make it possible to emulate the mechanisms that are important to the learning and memory processes that occur at the connections of neurons in form of synapses. In this context, it has been shown that nano-ionic mechanisms, in socalled memristive devices, allow the emulation of synaptic plasticity on a descriptive level within a single device. Memristive devices are passive, non-volatile components whose resistance value depends on the applied electrical potentials. In recent years, the important plasticity mechanisms of synaptic information-processing have been emulated using memristive devices. The importance of memristive devices in terms of emulating dynamic processes within novel bio-inspired computing schemes attract worldwide interest and is the subject of this thesis.

In this work a metal surface structuring process called nanoscale sculpturing was introduced. The basic idea of nanoscale sculpturing is the right combination of direct and indirect dissolution, which include intermediate oxide formation, dissolution, and surface passivation processeses. In dieser Arbeit wird Nanoscale sculpturing vorgestellt. Die Grundidee davon ist die richtige Kombination von direkter und indirekter Auflösung, welche sofortigen Oxidaufbau, Auflösung, und Oberflächenpassivierung einschliesst.

Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) processing for Mg alloy is known for decades and has been established as a well-known industrial surface treatment offering a reasonable wear and corrosion protection. However the long-term protection is often limited by the intrinsic porosity and limited phase compositions in the PEO layer. A novel optimization approach is to introduce particles to the PEO electrolyte, aiming at their in-situ incorporation into PEO coatings during growth. The idea is that with the help of particles the defects can be sealed, and the composition range and the functionalities of produced coatings can be enhanced. The thesis reports the influence of particle addition on PEO processing, how the particle up-take can be controlled and how the morphology, microstructure, phase composition, and properties of PEO coating on Mg alloy are influenced. The mechanisms of uptake and incorporation of particles into PEO layers as well as the coating growth mechanisms are also discussed. It was found that addition of particles cannot avoid/seal fully the high porosity of PEO coatings. Moreover, the growth rate of the coatings is reduced in the presence of particles. The nature of particle itself, together with electrical and electrolyte parameters during the process determine the way and efficiency of particle uptake and incorporation into PEO coatings. The final incorporation of the particles into the coating can range from inert to reactive, which can also be controlled by modifying the processing parameters. Although the corrosion resistance of the coating cannot be significantly improved by the particles, it is feasible to control and modify the biodegradability and compatibility of the coating via addition of particles. Furthermore, multifunctional coatings with anti-wear and photocatalytic properties were produced and it was demonstrated that particle properties can be transferred directly to the coatings.

As of late, magnetoelectric composite sensors are becoming potential candidates for the measurement of low magnetic signals. These sensors constitute of thin film layers sputtered on top of each other and exploit the product property of their constituent materials. Based on the strain transfer between piezoelectric and magnetostrictive layers, magnetoelectric sensors are able to output a polarization in response to an applied external magnetic field. Their sensitivity to magnetic fields in the pT-range, at room temperature and without the need of cooling, represents several advantages including lower running costs, smaller device size and easier applicability. Aforementioned properties encouraged a wide range of investigations in the last decade, and various sensors with different materials and geometries were investigated. Among these, several sensors of aluminum nitride (AlN) and Fe-based metallic glass alloys; e.g., (Fe90Co10)78Si12B10 (FeCoSiB), exhibit remarkable results. The current work solves these challenges and aims at the fabrication, optimization and characterization of low temperature AlN thin films as well as the development of thin film magnetoelectric sensors based on AlN/FeCoSiB in order to detect AC magnetic fields smaller than 1 pT. Seit Kurzem bieten magnetoelektrische Kompositsensoren eine potentielle Alternative zur Messung niedriger magnetischer Signale. Diese Sensoren bestehen aus mehrlagigen Dünnfilmschichten, die übereinander abgeschieden werden und die Produkteigenschaft ihrer Bestandteile ausnutzen. Basierend auf der Dehnungsübertragung zwischen piezoelektrischen und magnetostriktiven Schichten, generieren magnetoelektrische Sensoren in Reaktion auf ein angelegtes externes Magnetfeld eine elektrische Polarisation. Ihre Empfindlichkeit für Magnetfelder im pT-Bereich, bei Raumtemperatur und ohne Kühlung, ist vorteilhaft. Dazu gehören niedrigere Herstellungs- und Betriebskosten, kleinere Gerätegrößen und einfachere Anwendbarkeit. Die genannten Anforderungen führten im letzten Jahrzehnt zu einem breiten Spektrum von Untersuchungen und der Erforschung verschiedener Sensoren mit unterschiedlichen Kompositsystemen und Geometrien. Besonders verschiedene Sensoren aus Aluminiumnitrid (AlN) und Fe-basierten metallischen Glaslegierungen zeigen bemerkenswerte Ergebnisse wie z.B. (Fe90Co10)78Si12B10 (FeCoSiB). Die aktuelle Arbeit löst diese Herausforderungen und behandelt die Fertigung, Optimierung und Charakterisierung von Niedertemperatur AlN Dünnfilmen, darüber hinaus wird die Entwicklung von magnetoelektrischen Sensoren auf Basis von AlN/FeCoSiB gezeigt. Diese Entwicklung soll schlussendlich die Detektion von magnetischen Wechselfeldern kleiner als 1pT ermöglichen. Die Notwendigkeit die amorphe Struktur und somit weichmagnetische Eigenschaften von FeCoSiB zu erhalten, wird durch den Einsatz eines neuen Niedrigtemperatur Prozessablaufs gelöst. Basierend auf anfänglichen Untersuchungen mit DC- und HF-Sputter prozessen, wird eine Tieftemperatur-AlN-Abscheidung erreicht, indem ein gepulster Gleichstrom-Zerstäubungsprozess, im Prozessablauf der magnetoelektrischen Sensoren implementiert wird. Dieser Prozessablauf ermöglicht die Realisierung neuer Sensortypen, bei denen die Stapelreihenfolge verändert werden kann, um die Sensoreigenschaften zu optimieren.

Der Sonderforschungsbereich 677 - "Funktion durch Schalten" der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft hat zum Ziel den Schaltvorgang auf der molekularen Skala und die Realisierung von schaltbaren funktionellen Werkstoffen zu erforschen. In diesem Kontext wurde im Rahmen dieser Arbeit die Photoschaltbarkeit der elektrischen Leitfähigkeit von Polymerkompositen untersucht. Die Manipulation der elektrischen Leitfähigkeit sollte dabei durch Licht mit schaltbaren Molekülen wie Azobenzol erfolgen. Diese molekularen Schalter ändern durch Bestrahlung mit Licht unterschiedlicher Wellenlänge reversibel ihr Dipolmoment und die geometrische Form. The goal of the Collaborative Research Center 677 - "Function by Switching" of the German Research Foundation is to explore the switching process at the molecular scale and the realization of switchable functional materials. In the framework of this thesis, the photoswitching of the electrical conductivity of polymer composites was investigated. The manipulation of the electrical conductivity should be affected by light with switchable molecules such as azobenzene. These molecular switches can change reversibly their dipole moment and geometric shape by irradiation with light of different wavelengths.

This dissertation is about morphology controlled synthesis of one dimensional (1D) nanomaterials (NMs) for electrocatalysis and supercapacitance applications. Template assisted electrodeposition technique was employed to grow 1D NMs; the morphology of which could be varied from nanotubes (NTs) to nanorods (NRs), through two simple and cost effective methods. In the first method, morphology was controlled by controlling the time of electrodeposition inside the anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template. The presence of sputtered gold on the inside walls of the template provided the first nucleation sites for the formation of nanotube walls that are subsequently thickened due to gradual increase of the deposition time. We tuned the wall thickness of gold (Au), platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd) NTs until the formation of nanorods. This method was also extended to synthesize bimetallic and trimetallic NTs. Furthermore, Pt NTs modified with monolayers of tin (Sn) and ruthenium (Ru) were also synthesized through underpotential deposition of Sn and Ru. In the second method, 1D NTs of nickel (Ni) were grown inside the template and were subsequently oxidized to yield 1D-NiO nanostructures; the morphology of which was controlled from nanotube to nanorods due to advancing oxide layer via adjusting the annealing time. The synthesized NSs were tested as electrodes for direct liquid fuel cells and electrochemical supercapacitors. Pt and Pd were characterized for electrooxidation of methanol and formic acid, respectively, while NiO was tested for supercapacitance applications. All our NMs exhibited high electrochemical activity towards electrocatalysis and supercapacitance properties. In addition, modified Pt NTs showed enhanced electrooxidation of methanol as compared to bare Pt. Furthermore, a strong dependence of the electrochemical properties on morphology was observed where, superior electrochemical properties were observed for NTs owing to the large active surface area involved.

Generation, deposition and functionalization of nanoparticles (NPs) have received much numerous attention during the last decades due to the outstanding features of NPs and their unique roles in adjusting different properties of advanced materials. This dissertation includes three individual projects focused on synthesis and modification of different NPs based on using plasmas. Finding correlations between the plasma parameters and the observed phenomena is very crucial in this study. Particularly, we investigate metal and oxide-metal NP formation by a gas aggregation source (GAS) combined with conventional DC and/or pulsed DC magnetron sputtering. The next part of this dissertation is focused on the plasma characterization of a hollow electrode discharge and the influence of the ignited discharge, in radio frequency (RF) regime, on metal NPs. It is demonstrated that the ignited discharge can significantly change the characteristics of the passing NP beam by charging metal NPs and redistributing them in the beam. The last part of this research is devoted to study the synthesis of germanium (Ge) NPs in a nonthermal plasma reactor. It is shown that by adjusting the gas composition, and consequently varying the dominant mechanisms in the plasma, the size, crystallinity and surface chemistry of the synthesized Ge NPs can be controlled.

Josephson junctions are used as active devices in superconducting electronics and quantum information technology. Outstanding properties are their distinct non-linear electrical characteristics and a usually sinusoidal relation between the current and the superconducting phase difference across the junction. In general the insertion of ferromagnetic material in the barrier of a Josephson junction is associated with a suppression of superconducting correlations. But also new phenomena can arise which may allow new circuit layouts and enhance the performance of applications. This thesis presents a systematic investigation for two concepts to fabricate Josephson junctions with a rather uncommon negative critical current. Such devices exhibit an intrinsic phase slip of Pi between the electrodes, so they are also known as Pi-junctions. Both studies go well beyond existing experiments and in one system a Pi-junction is shown for the first time. All the thin film junctions are based on superconducting Nb electrodes. In a first approach, barriers made from Si and Fe were investigated with respect to the realisation of Pi-junctions by spin-flip processes. The distribution of Fe in the Si matrix was varied from pure layers to disperse compounds. The systematic fabrication of alloy barriers was facilitated by the development of a novel timing-based combinatorial sputtering technique for planetary deposition systems. An orthogonal gradient approach allowed to create binary layer libraries with independent variations of thickness and composition. Second, Nb | AlOx | Nb | Ni60Cu40 | Nb (SIsFS) double barrier junctions were experimentally studied for the occurrence of proximity effect induced order parameter oscillations. Detailed dependencies of the critical current density on the thickness of s-layer and F-layer were acquired and show a remarkable agreement to existing theoretical predictions. Especially a variation of jc and IcRn by the s-layer thickness up to the value of nonmagnetic SIS junctions is notable. Additionally information on the emergence of superconductivity with the s-layer thickness was acquired. Josephson Kontakte werden als aktive Bauelemente in supraleitender Elektronikschaltungen und in ersten Versuchen zur Quanten-Informationsverarbeitung eingesetzt. Besondere Eigenschaften sind hierbei ihre hochgradig nicht lineare elektrische Charakteristik und eine meist sinusförmige Beziehung zwischen dem Strom und der Supraleitenden Phasendifferenz über dem Kontakt. Allgemein führt das Einbringen eines Ferromagneten in die Barriere eines Josephson Kontakts zu einer Reduktion der supraleitenden Korrelationen. Allerdings können dadurch auch neue Effekte auftreten, die neue Schaltkreislayouts ermöglichen oder die Leistungsfähigkeiten von Anwendungen erhöhen könnten. In dieser Thesis werden zwei Ansätze, um Josephson Kontakte mit einem ungewöhnlichen negativen kritischen Strom herzustellen, systematisch untersucht. Diese Bauteile zeichnen sich durch einen intrinsischen Phasensprung von Pi zwischen den Elektroden aus, daher sind sie auch als Pi-Kontakte bekannt. Beide Untersuchungen gehen deutlich über bestehende Experimente hinaus und in einem System wurde zum ersten Mal ein Pi-Kontakt nachgewiesen. Sämtliche Dünnschichtkontakte basieren auf supraleitenden Nb Elektroden. In einem ersten Ansatz wurden Barrieren aus Si und Fe hergestellt und im Hinblick auf das Auftreten von Pi-Kontakten durch Spin-Flip Prozesse untersucht. Dabei wurde die Verteilung von Fe in einer Si Matrix von reinen Schichten bis zu homogen gemischten Verbindungen variiert. Um die systematische Herstellung von Barrieren aus Legierungen zu erleichtern, wurde eine neuen Zeit-basierte kombinatorische Sputtertechnik für Planetenartige Depositionssysteme entwickelt. Ein orthogonales Gradienten Verfahren ermöglichte die Herstellung von binären Schicht-Bibliotheken in denen die Schichtstärke und -zusammensetzung unabhängig voneinander variiert. In einem zweiten Ansatz wurden Nb | AlOx | Nb | Ni60Cu40 | Nb (SIsFS) Doppel-Barrieren-Kontakte experimentell im Hinblick auf Proximityeffekt bedingte Ordnungsparameter-Oszillationen untersucht. Fein aufgelöste Abhängigkeiten der kritischen Stromdichte vom der Dicke der s-Schicht und F-Schicht wurden aufgenommen und Sie zeigen eine nennenswerte Übereinstimmung zu bestehenden theoretischen Vorhersagen. Besonders die Variation von jc und IcRn bedingt durch die s-Schicht Dicke, bis hin zu den Werten für nichtmagnetische SIS Kontakte, ist bemerkenswert. Zusätzlich wurden Informationen über das Erscheinen der Supraleitung mit der s-Schicht Dicke gewonnen.

A three dimensional carbon network material of seamless interconnected and hollow tubes, featuring a graphitic structure and an extremely low density has been designed and fabricated in cm3 volumes. The synthesis of this foam like material, named Aerographite, is based on highly-porous three dimensional networks from zinc oxide (ZnO) which are utilized as sacrifcial templates in a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. Such type of ZnO templates are produced by the flame transport synthesis (FTS) and allow free control over the template pore size, porosity and structure sizes. By consequent minimization of the applied carbon masses and tailored template porosity of 97%, the density of Aerographite was reduced to 180 mg/cm3 which had broken the record for lightest solid and remains up to date among the lightest materials in literature. The challenge to measure the mechanical response of super light materials has been tackled by a self built mechanical test set-up for an automated cyclic stress strain measurement. Highest specific moduli under tensile stress has been revealed. The microscopic deformation mechanisms of Aerographite networks are identified by detailed in situ studies in the scanning electron microscope and an analytical model is established to interpret the elastic properties of the bulk Aerographite. Further, the visco elastic properties of Aerographite are discussed and based on the findings in the in situ experiments, a first theory for the visco-elastic mechanisms in Aerographite is introduced. Finally the functional application of Aerographite as electrode material is demonstrated by the construction of two prototypes: an electrical double-layer capacitor equipped with Aerographite electrodes and a rechargeable lithium-sulfur battery with sulfur infiltrated Aerographite cathode. The capacity fading of the lithiumsulfur battery has been studied by cyclic voltammetry and the specific capacity of the electrical double-layer capacitor was measured.

In der Vakuumtechnik müssen unterschiedliche Messverfahren eingesetzt werden, um den Druck in einem großen Druckbereich zu bestimmen, womit Bedarf sowohl an einer Messbereichserweiterung, als auch an einer Reduzierung der Gasartabhängigkeit der einzelnen Verfahren besteht. Da MEMS-basierte Sensorelemente zudem in weiteren Anwendungsbereichen eingesetzt werden könnten, wurden für die gängigsten Messverfahren die Auswirkungen einer Miniaturisierung theoretisch untersucht. Aus einem vereinfachten eindimensionalen Modell der druckabhängigen Wärmeleitfähigkeit eines Gases konnte analytisch abgeleitet werden, dass die Sensitivität eines Wärmetransport-Vakuummeters von der Oberfläche des beheizten Filaments und dessen Abstand zur Wärmesenke abhängt, und nicht von den parasitären Wärmeverlusten. Diese Vorhersagen konnten an Sensorelementen mit Filamentoberflächen von 0,3mm² bis 0,8mm² und einer bzw. zwei Wärmesenken im Abstand von 150µm, welche mittels Si-Bulk-Mikrotechnologie realisiert wurden, bestätigt werden. Im Konstant-Temperatur-Betriebsmodus umfasste der auflösbare, druckempfindliche Bereich bis zu acht Dekaden von 1e-5 mbar bis 1e3 mbar. Die Grundlage für ein miniaturisiertes Ionisations-Vakuummeter ist eine kalte Elektronenquelle, welche die durch Glühkathoden verursachten thermischen Störeffekte reduzieren würde. Nanotechnology applications revolutionize our daily life in the new millennium. It has enormous promising applications that considerably influences the whole world. Things like consumer goods, nanofiltration, nanoelectronics, nanomedicine, aerospace, defense, energy, environment, and all fields of economy are deeply affected by nanotechnology. Thus, there should be some innovative methods to meet the growing requirement of nanobased products. These methods need to be simple to handle, environmental-friendly, energy efficient, and low cost. Leidenfrost effect can be reflected in our daily life. In our home kitchen, while cooking for example, if a drop of water touches a hot surface which is at a temperature much higher than the boiling point of water, the lower part of the drop is evaporated and the water levitates on its own vapor film. In this thesis, the Leidenfrost drop has been introduced as a water-based green chemical reactor for simultaneous synthesis and self-organization of nanostructures. An important contribution of this work is in exploring the origin and mechanism of the nanofabrication at Leidenfrost condition. It turns out that these conditions are based upon overheated and charged nature of the droplet. Moreover, this thesis demonstrates the synthesis of structured nanoparticles, their assembly in the form of 3D nanocoating on complex objects, the design and development of nanoporous metal suspension and the foam structures. Through the nanofabrication process, some exemplar applications are represented such as plasmonic wideband superabsorber, which could be a good candidate for solar energy harvesting as well as a superhydrophilic and thermal resistive metal-polymer hybrid foam. Furthermore, it turns out that this new green strategy provides the possibility to produce nanopowder with customized morphology thereby affecting the thermal emissivity in addition to many other functions. This water-based, one step, cost effective and eco-friendly approach does not contain any hazardous organics, capping agents or coordination compounds that can contaminate the product and consequently complicate its application. The synthesized nanomaterials are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), infrared (IR) thermography, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis).

Nanostrukturen aus Gold und Silber haben sich als hochwirksame Substrate für die Oberflächenverstärkte Ramanspektroskopie (Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, SERS) erwiesen. Die hohe Verstärkung des elektromagnetischen Felds an solchen Strukturen erlaubt es, adsorbierte Moleküle in sehr geringer Konzentration bis hin zu einem Einzelmolekül mittels Ramanspektroskopie nachzuweisen und zu charakterisieren. Die praktische Umsetzung zu SERS-basierten Sensoren ist jedoch dadurch erschwert, dass es noch keine einfache und kostengünstige Herstellungsmethode von großflächig geordneten, nanostrukturierten Substraten mit hohen und reproduzierbaren Raman-Verstärkungsfaktoren gibt. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Anfertigung von Edelmetallnanostrukturen mittels Templateverfahren und deren Verwendung als SERS-Substrate. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit wurde das Verfahren zur Herstellung von Templaten aus anodischem Aluminiumoxid (AAO) untersucht und weiterentwickelt. Durch Anodisierung von hochreiner Al-Folie entstand eine dünne Schicht aus AAO-Nanoporen, die anschließend vom Al-Rest befreit wurde. Die 10 bis 40 μm dicken AAO-Membrane wurden nach weiteren Vorbereitungsschritten (Öffnen der Poren, einseitiges Metallisieren und Verstärken) als Template für die elektrochemische Abscheidung von Gold- und Silber-Nanodrähten eingesetzt. Der zentrale Nachteil der Verwendung von freien AAO-Membranen für die Erzeugung metallischer Nanostrukturen ist der mühsame und langwierige Herstellungsprozess. Es kommt hinzu, dass Nanomaterialien mit hohen Formfaktoren beim Freilegen mechanisch kollabieren können. Eine bessere Alternative zu den freien Membranen sind “substratgestützte” AAO-Template. Für ihre Herstellung wurden zunächst umfangreiche Arbeiten zwecks Optimierung der Herstellungsbedingungen der Multischichten aus Gold, Titan und Aluminium mit Gasphasenabscheidung (PVD) auf dem gewünschten Substrat durchgeführt. Die Au- und Ti-Schichten wurden im hochfrequenten Modus bei optimalen Ar-Partialdrücken und Abscheideraten gesputtert. Aluminium wurde mit dem Elektronenstrahlaufdampfverfahren abgeschieden. Die Herstellung erfolgte sukzessiv ohne Unterbrechung des Vakuums. Die Goldschicht an der Unterseite der Nanoporen bildet den elektrischen Kontakt für die nachfolgende Anodisierung und im weiteren Verlauf für die elektrochemische Abscheidung der Nanodrähte. Die Ti-Schichten zwischen Substrat und Au, bzw. zwischen Au und Al, dienen der Schichtadhäsion. Die paarweise Haftung der Multischichten, die Topographie und die innere Struktur entscheiden, ob und zu welchem Grad die Al-Schicht anodisiert werden kann, sowie über die Qualität und die Stabilität der Template während der weiteren Herstellungsschritte. Mit glatten und gut haftenden Al-Schichten konnten durch Anodisierung erfolgreich breitflächige Template (bis zu 100 cm²) auf Glas- oder Si-Substraten angefertigt werden. Im zweiten Teil dieser Arbeit wurden robuste und stabile SERS-Substrate mit hohen und reproduzierbaren Verstärkungsfaktoren präpariert. Sowohl freie als auch substratgestützte AAO-Template wurden für die elektrochemische Abscheidung von Gold- und Silber-Nanodrähten eingesetzt. Zusätzlich zum quasi-eindimensionalen (1D) Wachstum von Gold und Silber in den Poren konnte die Morphologie der Au- und Ag-Nanodrähte durch die Modifizierung der elektrochemischen Abscheidebedingungen kontrolliert werden. Dadurch konnte ein Übergang von eindimensionaler zu mehrdimensionaler Architektur der Nanodrähte erreicht werden, einschließlich der Ausformung von Spitzen und der Bildung von Verzweigungen. Mit diesen komplexen Au- und Ag-Nanostrukturen konnten Raman-Bänder von Rhodamin 6G um Faktoren bis zu 10^9 und 10^12 verstärkt werden. Speziell die Lücken zwischen den einzelnen Zweigen bzw. die Spitzen der Nanodrähte wirken als sogenannte „Hot Spots“. Die starke Konzentration der Hot Spots an der Oberfläche führt zu den gigantisch hohen Verstärkungsfaktoren.

Reactively sputtered Ag/TiOx nanocomposite coatings show high potential for antibacterial applications. However, previous studies on such coatings showed unavoidable segregation of silver out to the surface, which results in direct exposure of the potentially harmful Ag nanoparticles (NPs) to the environment and could also lead to a rapid depletion of the Ag source. Moreover, potentially harmful silver NPs are directly exposed to the environment without encapsulation. Tailoring the silver ion release is thus highly promising for enhancing the antibacterial applications of reactively sputtered Ag/TiOx coatings. The present work is concerned with the influence of sputter parameters on the surface morphology and silver ion release properties of reactively sputtered Ag/TiOx nanocomposite coatings. Since surface segregation of silver in such nanocomposites has not been investigated systematically, here we show under which conditions of the reactive sputtering process silver surface segregation occurs and how it can be controlled to obtain Ag/TiOx nanocomposites with a defined morphology. Silver NPs were embedded in or coated on TiOx thin films for 3D and 2D system purposes. Titanium oxide is known for its biocompatibility, transparency, low coat and good dielectric properties. DC reactive magnetron sputtering is selected because it not only provides controllable structures, sizes and morphologies, and allows formation of films with controllable stoichiometry, but it is also straightforward to implement in industrial-scale production with relatively high deposition rates and large area coatings. A series of titanium oxide thin films containing different silver filling factors were synthesized by a DC reactive magnetron co-sputtering method at different total pressure and oxygen conditions. The aim was to minimize Ag oxidation in conjunction with controlled surface segregation. We present an investigation about the influence of total pressure, silver filling factor, and titanium oxide barriers on the surface morphology evolution. Furthermore, the relation between the morphology of the nanocomposites and their optical properties is presented. To gain additional insight into the role that oxygen and plasma conditions played in silver surface segregation, 2D layer-by-layer structures were deposited and the silver surface segregation behavior was investigated by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as well. The potential of silver ion release is studied by immersion samples in water for several different periods of time. Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is used to measure the concentration of silver ion in water. Different approaches to tailor the silver ion release are studied in this work. Tuning silver ion release by varying the total gas pressure, oxygen flow rate, silver concentration, barrier deposition rate and barrier thickness is presented. In addition, the kinetics of silver ion release in Ag/TiOx nanocomposites is discussed as well.

Magnetoelektrische Komposite stellen einen vielversprechenden Ansatz dar, äußerst sensitiv kleinste magnetische Signale wie biomagnetische Signale zu detektieren. Ein magnetoelektrischer Komposit besteht aus einer magnetostriktiven und einer piezoelektrischen Phase. Letztere kann hierbei ein klassisches piezoelektrisches Material wie Aluminiumnitrid oder Zinkoxid oder ein ferroelektrisches Material sein. Im Falle der Gruppe der Ferroelektrika ist das Material der Wahl Bleizirkonattitanat. Aufgrund von gesetzlichen Vorgaben der Europäischen Union und anderen Ländern, welche zum Ziel haben, langfristig bleihaltige Verbindungen zu ersetzen, besteht die Notwendigkeit, Bleizirkonattitanat durch gleichwertige bleifreie Alternativen zu ersetzen. Aus diesem Grund beschäftigt sich der erste Teil der Arbeit mit der Herstellung und Charakterisierung von ferroelektrischen Schichten auf der Basis von mit Kalzium und Zirkonium substituiertem Bariumtitanat (Ba0,85Ca0,15(Ti0,9Zr0,1)O3) durch gepulste Laserabscheidung. Die Untersuchungen zeigten, dass diese Schichten piezoelektrische Eigenschaften besitzen, die vergleichbar sind mit Schichten aus Bleizirkonattitanat. Weiterhin zeigten die Untersuchungen einen Wechsel von einem ferroelektrischen Verhalten im Falle der gesinterten Volumenproben hin zu einem Relaxorverhalten im Falle der dünnen Schichten aus Ba0,85Ca0,15(Ti0,9Zr0,1)O3. Bei Temperaturen unterhalb von 87 °C zeigen die Schichten die Charakteristik eines ergodischen Relaxors, der bei 30 °C in einen nichtergodischen oder ferroelektrischen Zustand wechselt. So wird es möglich, dieses Material bei Raumtemperatur als Sensormaterial zu nutzen. Im weiteren wird die Eignung des Materials als piezoelektrische Phase in einem magnetoelektrischen Komposit diskutiert. Als magnetostriktive Phase wurde die amorphe Legierung (Fe90Co10)78Si12B10 genutzt. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit sollen magnetoelektrische Dünnschichtkomposite untersucht werden, die durch Interdigitalelektroden ausgelesen werden. Hintergrund ist die Erhöhung der magnetoelektrischen Spannung mit dem Elektrodenabstand. Hierfür dient Bleizirkonattitanat als piezoelektrische Phase. Die Herstellung der Schichten erfolgte durch die Abscheidung aus einer chemischen Lösung. Auch bei diesen Untersuchungen dienten Schichten aus (Fe90Co10)78Si12B10 als magnetostriktive Phase. Eine Hauptfragestellung der Arbeit war hierbei der Einfluss des Elektrodendesigns auf die magnetoelektrischen Eigenschaften und die erreichbaren Detektionslimits der Komposite. Üblicherweise werden die Elektroden der piezoelektrischen Schichten als Plattenkondensatoren ausgeführt. Alternativ hierzu können die generierten Spannungen am Piezoelektrikum auch durch Interdigitalelektroden abgegriffen werden. Um eine Nutzung der Interdigitalelektroden zu ermöglichen, musste die üblicherweise genutzte Schichtabfolge, für die eine gemeinsame Grenzfläche der magnetostriktiven und piezoelektrischen Phase charakteristisch ist, geändert werden. Zu diesem Zweck wurde ein Kompositdesign entwickelt, welches durch ein die Phasen trennendes und isolierendes Substrat gekennzeichnet ist. Durch den Einsatz der Interdigitalelektroden konnten die generierten magnetoelektrischen Spannungen gegenüber Kompositen mit Plattenkondensatorelektroden deutlich erhöht werden. Ebenso zeigten solche Komposite ein vielversprechendes Detektionslimit im Bereich von 1pT/Hz1/2. Allerdings konnte die Erhöhung der generierten magnetoelektrischen Spannung durch den Einsatz der Interdigitalelektroden nicht in eine Verringerung des Detektionslimits im gleichen Verhältnis umgesetzt werden, da den höheren erzielten Spannungen von Kompositen mit Interdigitalelektroden auch ein höheres Rauschniveau gegenüber Kompositen im Platenkondensatordesign gegenübersteht.

Plasmonic metamaterials are artificial materials typically composed of noble metals in which the features of photonics and electronics are linked by coupling photons to conduction electrons of metal (known as surface plasmon). These rationally designed structures have spurred interest noticeably since they demonstrate some fascinating properties which are unattainable with naturally occurring materials. Complete absorption of light is one of the recent exotic properties of plasmonic metamaterials which has broadened its application area considerably. However, up to date all of the applied methods (perforated metallic films, grating structured systems, and conventional metamaterials) are costly and suffer from a lack of flexibility. Furthermore, their absorbance is mainly limited to a narrow spectral range or their fabrication is costly. So, such drawbacks make their vast application almost impossible. Here, in this dissertation, we design, fabricate and characterize a novel perfect absorbers based on nanocomposites whose total thickness is only a few tens of nanometers and its absorption band is broad, tunable and insensitive to the angle of incidence. The nanocomposites consist of metal nanoparticles embedded in a dielectric matrix with a high filling factor close to the percolation threshold. The filling factor can be tailored by vapor phase co-deposition of the metallic and dielectric components. Accordingly, three types of metals (gold, silver and copper) as the inclusions of the nanocomposite and four different mirrors (gold, silver, copper and aluminum) are used as the base layer. The high absorption of these metamaterials are originated from the huge absorption capability of the metallic nanoparticles (smaller than 5 nanometer in diameter) via localized plasmon resonance, confinement of the light within the tiny gap between nanoparticles as well as interference of the light by reflection through the layers. To functionalize the system, polymer-photoswitchable molecules were added as the top or spacer layer which enable us to demonstrate a photodriven perfect absorber in which the absorption band can be broadened or narrowed by ultraviolet or visible light illumination, respectively. In this approach, the absorption tuning is originated from the bond-breakage of the molecules which can be activated by irradiation. Due to the strong interaction of the molecules and metal mirror, plasmon-exciton coupling happens which not only enhances the absorption but also shifts or splits the absorption band. Also as the specific highlight of the idea, we show that a thin plasmonic nanocomposite film on a silicon wafer covered by a silicon dioxide film would diminish the reflection in a broad range of frequency and make a new class of plasmonic anti-reflection coating. Our novel concept (called hybrid ARC) combines two possible arrangements for the layers in an anti-reflection coating into a single structure; albeit at two different wavelengths. Its performance originates from the strong dispersive nature of the nanocomposite. Furthermore, we show that the current metamaterial on a metal reflector can be used for visualization of different colorations as a plasmonic rainbow despite its sub-wavelength thickness.

As a matter of fact, the importance of (transition) metal oxides for modern applications in the field of energy and information technology (IT) for e.g. novel energy storage systems and solid state electronic devices is increasing. Previous studies discovered the importance of defects in an oxide for their functionality and emphasized the impact of stoichiometry on the oxide performance. A new field of interest of the memory technology sector is the so-called resistive switching phenomena where a voltage stimulus causes a thin oxide (≤ 10nm) to change its resistance state from a high resistance state to a low resistance state and back. So called resistive RAM (ReRAM or RRAM) are deemed to be the future replacement (2015) for contemporary FLASH memory technology due to its extremely low energy consumption, its very fast read/write time (ns) and its possible node size

NiTi shape memory alloys present themselves as high potential candidate in several applications. This fact arises from their superior attributes such as large stress output, recoverable strain and outstanding biocompatibility. Fatigue life prediction of bulk shape memory alloys have been extensively investigated in the literature. Yet so far, information about the fatigue life prediction on NiTi thin films is rarely discussed or missing which might limit the window of future applications. In this thesis, NiTi freestanding films with nearly equiatomic composition were fabricated by means of magnetron sputtering, UV lithography, and wet etching. The films were subsequently annealed in vacuum. The fatigue properties of the films were characterized by a self-developed fatigue testing device under tension-tension loading mode. Fatigue life diagrams were conducted and investigated at various testing variables such as different cyclic frequencies and different mean strains. In addition, the influences of the chemical composition, the film thickness, and the annealing conditions on the fatigue characteristics were investigated. The fatigue endurance limit (FEL) in this work was taken at 10 million cycles. A significantly improved FEL of more than 350 % was attained by using different surface finishing. The FEL in this work is the highest among all published literature data on NiTi films. Moreover, the biocompatibilities of NiTi films were examined by investigating the cell growth on films’ surface after different surface finishing. The result showed insignificant dependence of cell growth and adhesion on the film surface. The freestanding films showed a great biocompatibility levels. In addition, the measurements of the Ni ion release on NiTi films modified with the different surface finishing were performed in a balanced salt solution used to mimic human body fluids. The results show that the Ni concentration in the tested solution is below the maximum limit of the international biocombatibitly standards and that the Ni ion release can be modified through different surface finishings. Finally, the factors governing the fatigue characteristics and the biocompatibility aspects of NiTi films were identified and optimized to enhance the overall performance of the NiTi films and increase the design and the integration possibilities in different applications.

Several aspects of gas phase cluster aggregation and its potential applications are explored in this work. In this technique, magnetron sputtering is used to create a high density of single atoms in an inert gas atmosphere. These atoms then aggregate to nanoclusters and are carried by an inert gas flowto an orifice. Behind the orifice, a directed beam of clusters is formed and can be used for sample deposition. At first, a system for cluster and nanocomposite deposition is built. It is based on a commercial magnetron and uses the same working principle as common gas aggregation cluster sources (GAS). However, it does not use a strict laminar inert gas flow and lacks an orifice, but instead offers the possibility for plasma diagnostics. Silver is used as cluster material and numerous investigations are done to better understand the specifics in the gas phase cluster aggregation process. These experiments are done using in-situ diagnostics, such as calorimetric probes and optical emission spectroscopy, but also by analyzing deposited samples with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The deposition of composite materials using this system is realized by injecting a precursor for plasma polymerization into themagnetron plasma. This leads to the simultaneous growth of nanoparticles and an polymer matrix. For these experiments hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) is used as a precursor for the matrix material. The investigation of this system mainly focuses on the interaction between the two deposition processes in the source. After this, a second deposition system with a new closed GAS is developed and built. It also uses cluster aggregation and plasma polymerization as deposition processes. In comparison with the previous system, it offers independent control over these processes by placing them in two separate vacuum chambers with different gas flow control units and plasma discharges. The clusters produced by this system are characterized using electrostatic deflection and a commercial quadrupole mass spectrometer. Subsequently, it is used for the deposition of nanocomposite samples with peculiar optical properties. Lastly, this closed GAS is used for the formation of titanium nanoclusters. This is only possible using a new technique relying on a reactive gas admission. Here, the seeds for the nanoclusters are formed from titanium and oxygen, rather than pure titanium. The underlying mechanics of this effect are studied and a basic model is found. Further study reveals a novel technique, that increases the deposition rate of the titanium nanocluster by a factor of twenty. This is done by pulsing the, otherwise continuous, DC power of the magnetron inside the GAS. The reason for this increase is the sputtering of titanium oxide dimers from the target surface. An application in photocatalysis with promising results for future development is shown for the these clusters. In dieser Arbeit werden mehrere Aspekte der Gasphasenclusteraggregation und ihrer Anwendungen untersucht. In dieser Technik wird mittels Magnetronsputtern eine hohe Dichte von einzelnen Atomen in einer Gasatmosphäre erzeugt. Diese Atome bilden Cluster, die mit einem Gasstrom zu einer Düse getragen werden. Hinter der Düse bildet sich nun ein fokussierter Clusterstrahl, der zur Probenherstellung genutzt werden kann. Im ersten Teil wird ein System zu Abscheidung von Nanoclustern und Kompositmaterialien konstruiert. Es basiert auf einem kommerziellenMagnetron und nutzt das Prinzip üblicher Gasaggregationsquellen (GAS), allerdings besitzt es keine Düse. Dieses spezielle Design erlaubt es in-situ-Plasmadiagnostik zu nutzen. Als Material für die Clusterherstellung wird Silber verwendet. Es werden eine Vielzahl von Untersuchungen durchgeführt, um die genauen Prozesse während der Gasphasenclusteraggregation besser zu verstehen. Dazu werden Experimente mit in-situ-Diagnostik durchgeführt und Proben abgeschieden, deren Strukutr und Zusammensetzung analysiert wird. Zur Herstellung von Kompositschichten wird ein Monomer, Hexamethyldisiloxan (HMDSO), zur Plasmapolymerisation in das Magnetronplasma eingespritzt. Dadurch wächst gleichzeitig zu der Clusterabscheidung ein Polymer auf dem Substrat auf. Die Experimente an diesem System beschäftigen sich insbesondere mit der Wechselwirkung zwischen diesen beiden Abscheidungsprozessen in dem Magnetron. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit wird ein weiteres Abscheidungssystem entwickelt und konstruiert, das auf einer geschlossenen GAS basiert. ImUnterschied zum ersten System werden die beiden Prozesse in separaten Vakuumbereichen durchgeführt und können weitgehend unabhängig voneinander gesteuert werden. Die Cluster werden unter anderem mit einem Massenspektrometers und einem Systems zur elektrostatischen Ablenkung untersucht. Durch Einbettung dieser Cluster in das Polymer werden Nanokomposite abgeschieden, die besondere optische Eigenschaften aufweisen. Im letzten Teil werden mit der neuen Quelle Titancluster abgeschieden. Dies ist nur mit einer relativ jungen Technik möglich, die auf der Zugabe von reaktiven Gas beruht. Hierbei werden die Nukleationskeime aus Titanoxid, statt purem Titan, gebildet. Durch zahlreiche Experimente wird derMechanismus auf demdieser Effekt basiert untersucht.Weitergehende Untersuchungen führen zu einer neuartigen Methode, bei der die Abscheidungsrate der Titancluster auf mehr als das Zwanzigfache erhöht werden kann. Dies wird durch eine gepulste, statt der üblichen konstanten, Gleichspannung für das Magnetron erreicht. Der Grund für den starken Anstieg derAbscheidungsrate scheint hierbei die verstärkte Zerstäubung von Titan-Sauerstoff-Dimeren zu sein. Abschließend werden diese Cluster zur Photokatalyse eingesetzt.

Novel cobalt-plasma polymerized hexamethyldisialzane nanocomposites were prepared using hybrid plasma process. They have potential uses as phosphate ion sensors.

The tuning of silver ion release is very important for biomedical applications of silver nanocomposite materials to reduce the potential toxicity effects towards human cells and the environment. The present work is based on developing different metal/polymer nanocomposites using several physical vapor deposition (PVD) techniques. Since the properties of the nanoparticles strongly depend on their size, distribution and shape, the determination of their exact morphology is important in order to understand and control their physical properties. Thus, in this work the metal nanoparticles are deposited on the surface of the polymer films or buried under a polymer barrier instead of being embedded into the polymer matrix. The model system consists of ensembles of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on sputtered polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) thin films. Sputtered PTFE films are suitable to host the AgNPs due to the high crosslinking and since PTFE is a hydrophobic polymer so the quick depletion of the AgNPs could be avoided. Besides, PTFE is known for its high resistance to chemicals, transparency, good dielectric properties and biocompatibility. We examined the morphology, the composition and the optical properties of these nanocomposites using various analytical methods to characterize them and to study the potential of the silver ion release of the samples after immersion in water for several periods of time. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) is used to measure the concentration of silver ions in water. Changes in the microstructure and the optical properties of the nanocomposite films upon immersion in water allow demonstrating the kinetics of the silver ion release. Different approaches to tune the silver ion release process are studied and demonstrated in this work. Adjusting the release of silver ions through variation of the initial amount of silver nanoparticles, particle size control and through barrier thickness control is presented. Tuning the silver ion release by alloying with gold is also discussed. Furthermore, we study the release of silver ions from Ag/PTFE nanocomposites covered by thin films of plasma polymerized hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) and we show how varying the oxygen flow during the plasma polymerization process can adjust the silver ion release potential of the nanocomposites due to changes in the properties of the formed plasma polymerized HMDSO thin films.

Seit einigen Jahren wird vermehrt an bioresorbierbaren Magnesiumlegierungen für den Einsatz in der Medizintechnik geforscht. Diese Legierungen können überall dort eingesetzt werden, wo ein permanenter Verbleib des Implantats aus medizinischen Gründen nicht nötig ist, wie z.B. bei der Fixation von Knochenbrüchen oder zur Behandlung von koronaren Herzkrankheiten, da sie im menschlichen Körper abgebaut werden. Bisher lag der Fokus der weltweiten Forschungen auf der Entwicklung von Gussmaterialien. Ansätze zur Herstellung von Implantaten mit Hilfe der Dünnschichttechnik wurden hingegen bisher kaum erforscht und stellen das Thema dieser Arbeit dar. Sie umfasst das Finden geeigneter Legierungen und Abscheideparameter um freitragende Dünnschichten herzustellen, die gleichzeitig sowohl eine für die spätere Anwendung ausreichende plastische Verformbarkeit, als auch eine ausreichend niedrige Korrosionsrate aufweisen. Hierbei wird die Wahl der Legierungselemente zusätzlich durch die Vorgabe eingeschränkt, dass keine der beteiligten Komponenten eine schädliche Wirkung auf den menschlichen Metabolismus haben darf. In dieser Arbeit wird die Charakterisierung von vier ternären und zehn binären Legierungen hinsichtlich ihrer Mikrostruktur, ihres Korrosionsverhalten und ihrer mechanischen Eigenschaften vorgenommen. Zusätzlich wird der Ansatz untersucht, das Korrosionsverhalten der Dünnschichten über Multilagen aus unterschiedlichen Materialien zu beeinflussen. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass gesputterte Dünnschichten aus den meisten Magnesiumlegierungen unabhängig von den gewählten Abscheideparametern ein kolumnares Gefüge zeigen, das auch mit Hilfe von Wärmebehandlungen nicht in einen globularen Zustand überführt werden kann. Trotzdem konnte an ternären Legierungen aus Magnesium, Seltenen Erden und Yttrium beobachtet werden, dass für bestimmte Abscheideparameter Bruchdehnungen von über 20 % erreicht werden können. Eine signifikante Beeinflussung der Mikrostruktur über die Abscheideparameter war nur für diejenigen ternären Legierungen möglich, deren Zinkanteil bei über 30 wt. % lag. Weiterhin konnte für Dünnschichten aus binären Magnesiumlegierungen, die ein einphasiges Gefüge aufweisen, festgestellt werden, dass die Bruchdehnung mit steigendem Anteil des jeweiligen Legierungselements geringer wird, während sich das Korrosionsverhalten verbessert. Es existiert jedoch für die Systeme Mg-Gd und Mg-Y ein Fenster, in dem sowohl die mechanischen Eigenschaften, als auch die Korrosionsrate den Anforderungen für den Einsatz als bioresorbierbares Implantat genügen. Der Multilagenansatz erwies sich als nicht praktikabel, da die Korrosionsrate dieser Systeme, bedingt durch die Bildung von galvanischen Elementen zwischen den einzelnen Schichten, für den Einsatz als temporäres Implantat zu hoch war. The scientific work on biodegradable magnesium alloys for applications in the field of medical implant materials has increased significantly the recent years. These alloys can be applied whenever it is not necessary for the implant to remain permanently in the body, as it is the case for the anchorage of fractured bones or for the treatment of coronary heart diseases, because they are decomposed by the human body. Up to now the focus of the worldwide research was concentrated on the development of casting alloys. Approaches to fabricate implants by means of thin film technology have barely been explored and are thus the topic of this work. It includes the development of suitable alloys and the determination of deposition parameters in order to fabricate free-standing thin films, which exhibit at the same time a plastic deformation behaviour sufficient for the application and an adequately low corrosion rate. The range of possible alloying elements is in this case further limited due to the condition that none of the involved components must have a harmful effect on the human metabolism. In this work the characterization of four ternary and ten binary alloys regarding their microstructure, their corrosion behaviour and their mechanical properties is conducted. Additionally the approach to influence the corrosion performance of the thin films by means of multilayers made of different materials is investigated. It could be shown that sputter deposited thin films made of most of the investigated alloys show regardless of the deposition parameters a columnar microstructure and which also could not be converted to a globular microstructure with the help of heat treatments. Nevertheless it could be observed for ternary alloys of magnesium, rare earths and yttrium that elongations at fracture of up to 20 % can be obtained under certain deposition conditions. A significant influence on the microstructure by the deposition parameters was only possible for those ternary alloys, which had a zinc content of more than 30 wt. %. Furthermore it could be found for thin films consisting of binary magnesium alloys, which exhibit a microstructure composed of a supersaturated solid solution, that the elongation at fracture decreases with increasing amount of the corresponding alloying element, whereas the corrosion rate is at the same time improved. Nevertheless there exists a window for the systems Mg-Gd and Mg-Y in which both the mechanical properties as well as the corrosion rate meet the requirements for the application as biodegradable implant material. The multilayer approach was proven to be unsuitable, as the corrosion rates of the investigated systems were too high for the application as implant material due to the formation of galvanic elements between the single layers.

Modern applications of functional granular (0-3) nanocomposites require a precise tailoring of the composite morphology, filling factor, electrical properties and chemical composition. In Part I of this work a versatile deposition concept for the tailoring of 0-3 nanocomposites is elaborated and a respective deposition system is constructed. Ceramic-based 0-3 nanocomposites with embedded metallic magnetic particles are chosen to demonstrate the feasibility of the deposition concept. Aiming at functional 0-3 nanocomposites for high-k and magnetoelectric (ME) materials, aluminum nitride (AlN) is chosen as the matrix and cobalt (Co) for the particulate phase. Suitable deposition processes for the individual composite constituents are developed and the resulting piezoelectric AlN films and magnetic Co nanoparticles are characterized. Finally, 0-3 AlN/Co nanocomposites are produced and investigated regarding their suitability for high-k and ME applications. An increase of by up to a factor of 30 indicates the potential of the concept for the PVD preparation of high-k materials. Regarding the design of high-performance ME materials, several inherent challenges of the 0-3 nanocomposite approach with metallic particles are identified and existing literature is critically reviewed. The ME investigation is conducted within the framework of the SFB 855 “Magnetoelectric Composites - Future Biomagnetic Interfaces” which aims at the development of highly sensitive ME sensors especially for biomagnetic applications. The SFB not only focuses on the design of suitable ME materials, but also on the development of new sensor concepts. Accordingly, in Part II a novel sensor concept based on MEMS technology and the delta-E effect is presented. The demonstrator consists of a tipless AFM microcantilever with a resonance frequency of approximately 300 kHz which is excited mechanically. The resonator’s eigenfrequency can be shifted by an external magnetic field as the amorphous (Fe90Co10)12Si12B10 functional coating exhibits the delta-E effect. The demonstrator is shown to detect magnetic fields as low as 400 nT at biomagnetically relevant frequencies. It furthermore requires no cooling, possesses vector-field capability and is potentially fully integrable. Prospective optimized sensors based on the proposed concept are estimated to detect fields of 100 pT or below, rendering them relevant for medical applications like advanced drug delivery or in-vivo imaging.

Composite materials result from combination of two or more materials benefiting from the favorable properties of each constituent. Especially when the filler material is in nanometer size, it offers extra degrees of freedom with which physical properties can be manipulated to obtain new functionalities. Such materials are known as nanocomposites. For instance the electrical conductivity of nanocomposite film depends on the inter particle separation and can be varied from insulating to metallic by metal volume fraction. This dependency can be utilized to design sensors in the field of gas sensing and strain sensing. Thus the aim of this thesis is preparation, characterization of polymer and ceramic nanocomposites through vapor phase deposition process and most importantly according to the application needed. The chosen preparation method allows one to control and vary the composition and filling factor which are of prime importance to tailor the functional properties. The focus of the thesis is the application of these nanocomposites as strain sensor, tunnel magnetoresistance and as a high frequency core material. A hybrid system was developed which uses quasi dimensional metal/polymer composite to monitor the magnetostriction through quantum tunneling. Magnetically induced strain in the magnetostrictive element is transferred to assembly of Au nanoparticle by mechanical coupling. This magnetically induced strain leads to changes in interparticle separation in the nanoparticle assembly, giving rise to a change in tunneling current between the metal nanoparticles thus enabling simple electrical read out of the strain. The functional layer should be able to transfer to any substrate easily. The presence of polymer is an added advantage when the substrate is conductive as is the case here. Further, ceramic (TiO2, SiO2) based magnetic nanocomposites where ferromagnetic alloy (FeCo) nanoparticles are embedded in ceramic matrix were developed. The composites were characterized in terms microstructure and magnetic properties with respect to metal volume fraction. The magnetization process is strongly related to metal volume fraction. Films show superparamagnetic behavior up to the percolation threshold suggesting presence of non interacting single domain superparamagnetic particles where as at higher volume fraction show hysteresis characters. Considerable room temperature tunnel magnetoresistance was observed below the percolation threshold. FeCo-SiO2 nanocomposite films deposited under external magnetic field show permeability of 100, ferromagnetic resonance frequency of 3 GHz and high quality factors at 1 GHz. One micron thick films were successfully integrated into toroidal microinductors.

Graphene, the novel two-dimensional system that is composed of one-atom-thick carbon honeycombs, has emerged in the past few years as a promising material for both fundamental research and applications. In this dissertation, we develop reliably working fabrication techniques for high-electronic-quality single- and dual-gated graphene devices. We investigate various electronic transport phenomena in graphene field-effect-transistors and bipolar junctions by means of multi-terminal measurements, and explore graphene’s potential applications in the fields of quantum resistance metrology and Landau emitters.

In der modernen Medizin geht der Trend immer weiter zu alternativen Möglichkeiten, Infektionen zu behandeln und vorzubeugen, um dabei, soweit es geht, auf Antibiotika zu verzichten. Immer häufiger kommen dabei Silbernanokomposite zum Einsatz. Auf der anderen Seite entstehen durch den vermehrten Gebrauch von Nanosilber vor allem in Gegenständen des täglichen Gebrauchs Befürchtungen, inwieweit ihr Einsatz auch negative Auswirkungen auf den Menschen und die Umwelt nehmen kann. Aus diesem Grund ist es von großem Interesse, die entscheidenden Mechanismen der antimikrobiellen Aktivität zu kennen, und so das Silber ressourcensparend und bewusst an die jeweiligen Anwendungen anzupassen. Ziel dieser Arbeit war es zum einen, die systematische Untersuchung des Silberfreisetzungsverhaltens von gesputterten Silbertitandioxid-Nanokompositen durch die Variation verschiedener Parameter insbesondere durch das Aufbringen von Barriereschichten zu untersuchen; zum anderen sollten die die Auswirkungen dieser Modifikationen sowohl auf die antimikrobielle Aktivität als auch auf die Biokompatibilität hin getestet werden. Dabei stand im Vordergrund ein interdisziplinäres und anwendungsorientiertes Messverfahren zu entwickeln, das etablierte Methoden der einzelnen Bereiche erstmals gegenüberstellt, vergleicht und verknüpft, um so maßgeschneiderte Schichten zu erhalten. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass die Silberfreisetzung bei Silbertitandioxid-Nanokompositen entscheidend von der Morphologie der Silbercluster abhängt: Bei Kompositen, die mit einer ex situ Barriere versehen wurden, gab es durch die bimodale Verteilung große Cluster in der Grenzfläche. Diese wirkten selbst als Barriere, da Silberionen aus dem Inneren sich zuerst an die großen Cluster anlagerten. Als Folge konnte bei in situ Barrieresystemen, bei denen keine bimodale Verteilung zu beobachten war, zeitweise sogar eine höhere Freisetzung als bei barrierelosen Systemen nachgewiesen werden. Bei den biologischen Tests konnte klar ein therapeutisches Fenster nachgewiesen werden, in dem die zytotoxische und antibakterielle Aktivität für gelöstes Silber und Silber auf der Oberfläche unterschiedlich war. Die Untersuchungen der unterschiedlichen Wirkung von Silberclustern auf Fibroblasten und Bakterien zeigten, dass dieser Unterschied insbesondere auf den höheren Stoffwechsel der Bakterien zurückging. Bei diesem kam es zu einer lokalen Übersäuerung, die zu einer verstärkten Auflösung der Oberflächencluster und entsprechend zu einer erhöhten Silberkonzentration in Lösung führte. Durch die gewonnenen Kenntnisse über das Freisetzungsverhalten von Silbertitandioxid-Nanokompositen und den angepassten biologischen Messmethoden, lassen sich maßgeschneiderte Komposite erzeugen, die sich an die gegebenen Rahmenbedingungen verschiedenster medizinischer Applikationen orientieren können.

Die vorliegende Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit der Entwicklung geeigneter Schaltermaterialien für elektro-optische Anwendungen auf Basis von Polymermischungen mit Azobenzolderivaten. Durch die Untersuchung der elektrischen Eigenschaften der Komposite unter Einfluss von Gleich- und Wechselstrom konnte gezeigt werden, dass ein Schalten der elektrischen Eigenschaften durch den Einsatz von Licht möglich ist. Im Gegensatz zu bisherigen Arbeiten basiert das in dieser Dissertation entwickelte Konzept, elektro-optischer Schaltung auf Molekülen, die nicht intrinsisch leitfähig sind. Dafür wurden Polymere mit Azobenzolderivaten gemischt und anschließend quasi 2D-Netzwerke aus Metallpartikeln darauf abgeschieden und eingebettet. Durch die Isomerisierung ändert sich die Konformation der Moleküle, was sich auf die Abstände der Partikel zueinander auswirkt. Diese Veränderung wirkt sich auf die Tunnelwahrscheinlichkeit der Elektronen zwischen den Metallpartikeln aus. Dieses bedingt eine Änderung im gemessenen elektrischen Widerstand des Komposits. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit bestand darin, die reversible photoinduzierte Änderung der dielektrischen Eigenschaften auszunutzen, um photoschaltbare Kondensatoren zu entwickeln und deren Eigenschaften zu analysieren. Dafür werden die Proben unter Anlegen verschiedener Frequenzen zusätzlich UV- und sichtbarem Licht ausgesetzt. Des Weiteren wird der Einfluss der Temperatur auf diese Komposite analysiert.

Nanocomposite thin film coatings with a wide range of metal volume fractions were prepared by co–sputtering of TiO2/Teflon and Ag/Au from two different magnetron sources simultaneously in a home made deposition chamber under high vacuum conditions. Two different types of host materials a polymeric (PTFE) and a ceramic (TiO2) were studied in this work. Morphology, optical and antibacterial properties of these nanocomposites were examined. The formation of metallic nanoparticles upon vapor phase co–deposition of a metal and a dielectric matrix component can be understood in terms of the high cohesive energy of the metal and the low metal-matrix interaction energy which lead to high metal atom mobility on the growing composite surface and metal aggregation whenever metal atoms encounter each other or a metal cluster. Unlike the case of polymers, in the case of Ag nanoparticles on TiO2, segregation of the clusters on the surface also provides a fast pathway for Ostwald ripening without any restrictions by elastic distortions at least for those clusters which are in direct contact with the surface. 3D electron tomography was employed on the TiO2 based nanocomposite thin films to explain the two step model for the particle size distribution. First step involved the formation of small nanoparticles during vacuum phase deposition or on the growing surface. Second step after the deposition process involved the formation of larger particles through particle coarsening by Ostwald ripening and surface segregation. In bimetallic nanocomposites based on sandwich geometry in polymer system, the changes in the particle plasmon spectra of sandwiched Au nanoclusters as a result of the presence of Ag nanoclusters in their vicinity and vice versa was studied. Also, the optimum dielectric barrier thickness for the observation of equal intensity double plasmon resonance was reported. Also efforts towards tuning of the double plasmon resonances by tailoring the dielectric separation were carried out. Special attention was laid on the swift heavy ion irradiation (SHI) of the nanocomposites. The SHI beamlines from both the Hahn–Meitner–Institute in Berlin, Germany and the Inter University Accelerator Center in New–Delhi, India, were employed in this work. The TiO phase formation on SHI irradiation with increasing fluence was understood by the interaction of two different counteracting mechanisms, where at lower fluences, the tendency towards the formation of TiO existed with the larger unaffected areas and at higher fluences, the destruction of the evolved TiO phase into fragments was evident. This served as an evidence for the counter play between "hit" and "no–hit", "single–hit" and "multiple–hit" processes. A comparative study involving the in–situ heating of the TiO2 based nanocomposites in the TEM confirms the absence of the formation of TiO. Changes of the microstructure of the nanocomposite film upon annealing allowed demonstrating the absence of the formation of TiO but rather only the crystallization of the TiO2. SHI irradiation of Ag nanoparticles embedded in PTFE matrix shows a marginal dissolution of Ag nanoparticles along with a slight agglomeration of nanoparticles. At higher fluences, carbon rich areas were observed, which were as a result of the carbonization along the ion tracks. Functionality of the nanocomposites in terms of the antibacterial properties was studied. Cultures of B.megaterium, S.aureus, S.epidermidis and E.coli were used to study the effect on the Ag–TiO2 nanocomposites. Additionally, silver ion release studies were carried out at dfferent MVFs by using X-ray photoelectron and UV-Vis/NIR spectroscopies. Enhancement of the silver ion release after SHI irradiation at a fluence was observed to the fact that the ion trajectories after irradiation provide better silver ion release.

Synthesis of (co)polymer modified silica nanoparticles and study their influence on the mechanical properties of (co) polymer composites.

This doctoral (PhD) thesis is about utilization of electrospun nanofibrous membranes as a novel class of membranes for water filtration.

The goal of this work was to prepare diblock-copolymer which rapidly changes its solubility in the dependency of the temperature. Appropriate diblock-copolymer should consist of one active (hydrophilic) component, and hydrophobic matrix block. The active component should have the switching temperature as close as possible to the human body temperature. Diblock-copolymer should exhibit sufficient mechanical stability, and the polydispersity index should be as low as possible. The mechanically stable components of the diblock copolymer were, polystyrene (PS) or poly(tert-butylmethacrylate) (PtBMA), while as an active component, poly-(2-(2ethoxy)-ethoxy)methoxy methatcrylate (PDEGMA) was used. A polymer required for this purpose should have molar mass of at least 150000 g/mol (in order to posses mechanical stability), and molar ratio of PDEGMA of 0.20–0.40 (in order to get desired structure of hexagonally packed cylinders of PDEGMA in the matrix). The syntheses were performed via different polymerization mechanisms (sequential anionic polymerization, group transfer polymerization, atomic transfer radical polymerization, combination of anionic and atomic transfer radical polymerization. Magnetische Formgedächtnismaterialien bieten die Möglichkeit, große Längenänderungen mit technisch realisierbaren Magnetfeldern zu erreichen, und werden daher insbesondere im Hinblick auf den Einsatz als Aktoren weiterentwickelt. Anderereits lassen sich ebenso neuartige Sensoren für mechanische Größen realisieren, die Vorteile gegenüber etablierten Systemen aufweisen. Beispielsweise sind Sensoren denkbar, die hohe Dehnungen über einen Bereich von mehreren % Dehnung detektieren und berührungslos über ein kurze Distanz ausgelesen werden können. Sensoren basierend auf magnetischen Formgedächtnislegierungen sind jedoch weltweit weitaus weniger untersucht und stellen das Thema dieser Arbeit dar. Ein erarbeitetes Sensorkonzept zur Bestimmung der Dehnung, das für alle invers magnetostriktiven Materialien verwendet werden kann und das auf dem Prinzip der Frequenzmischung beruht, wird vorgestellt. Ein Vorteil dieses Konzeptes ist ein Mess-Signal, das sich nahezu perfekt linear zur Dehnung des Materials verhält, äußerst sensitiv auf Veränderungen der Dehnung reagiert und unempfindlich gegenüber typischen Querempfindlichkeiten ist. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es weiterhin, die magnetische Formgedächtnislegierung Fe70Pd30 mittels Dünnschichttechniken herzustellen und für den Einsatz im Sensorsystem zu optimieren, was die Charakterisierung des Schichtwachstums und der Mikrostruktur, sowie der magnetischen und mechanischen Eigenschaften umfasst. Es wird gezeigt, dass in den hergestellten, freitragenden Filmen mit polykristalliner Struktur keine spannungsinduzierte Verschiebung der Zwillingsgrenzen stattfindet, da diese durch die hohe Dichte der Korngrenzen behindert wird. Da der magnetische Formgedächtniseffekt am ausgeprägtesten in Einkristallen auftritt, werden epitaktische Schichten auf einkristallinen Substraten hergestellt, wobei kohärentes Wachstum bis hin zu hohen Schichtdicken im µm-Bereich erreicht werden kann. Die Fe70Pd30-Einheitszelle kann dabei aufgrund ihrer mechanisch weichen Eigenschaften durch die vom Substrat vorgegeben Gitterparameter gedehnt aufwachsen und diese Dehnung durch die Wahl des Substrats über einen großen Bereich variiert werden. Durch nasschemische Ätzprozesse lassen sich verwendete Gold-Opferschichten entfernen, sodass freitragende, einkristalline Schichten für das Sensorsystem zur Verfügung stehen. Ein martensitisches Entzwillingungsplateau im Spannungs-Dehnungs-Diagramm wird jedoch auch in diesen Schichten nicht beobachtet, da durch die Verwendung der epitaktischen Gold-Zwischenschicht zwar ein künstlich hergestellter, einvarianter Martensit besteht, das c/a Verhältnis der Einheitszelle jedoch im Vergleich zu Phasen, die den magnetischen Formgedächtniseffekt aufweisen, immer noch gering ist.

The subject of this thesis is the characterization of post etch residues after a metal etch process with Cl2/BCl3 plasma etch gases. Plasma etching processes are important for the fabrication of integrated circuits because these processes have a great impact on the size and the quality of the semiconductors on the wafer. As the semiconductor industry con-tinues to scale down the dimensions of the structures, a more and more precise control of the line shape profile of the etched features is required. The post etch residues formed mainly, but not only, on the sidewalls of structures after the completed plasma etching are regarded as a reliability risk and, thus, have to be re-moved. The removal process can be run in many ways with different chemistries due to different characteristics of the post etch residues. One of the influence factors on the features of the post etch residues is the photo-resist removal process (DSQ). Depending on the DSQ process, the molecular structure of the residues will differ. The chemical characteristics and changes in the molecular structure of the post etch residues were investigated, also, the cause of different solubility in the hydroxylamine-based solutions was subjected to analyses. Following analytical methods were used to characterize the residues: EDX (Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometry), AES (Auger Electron Spectroscopy), TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy), XPS (X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy), ToF-SIMS (Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry), Raman-Spectroscopy and FT-IR-Spectroscopy. Different metallization systems and the two main photo-resist removal modes were used to find out about the relationship between the structures, concentration of the elements, cross-linking of the residues and the process flow in the metallization block. The application of AES and EDX methods allowed the characterization of the surface of the post etch residues; by using TEM, structural information was obtained and the mate-rial characterization carried out; and by applying XPS, data about the concentration as well as the chemical and oxidation states of elements was collected; and the ToF-SIMS method provided specific molecular information. The results of the analytical methods verified the known facts about post etch residues consisting of aluminum, hydrogen, chlorine, carbon, titanium and other elements used in metallization systems. The chemi-cal bonding of the elements was also investigated. Using FT-IR and Raman spectros-copy, organic and inorganic molecular groups of the photo-resist were characterized. The organic compounds of the post etch residues could be identified as the incompletely oxidized or decomposed photo-resist molecules. By applying the Raman spectroscopy, it became evident that, depending on the DSQ mode, the cross-linking of the carbon-containing molecules in the post etch residues changes. A big impact on this effect can be ascribed to water that may be used in the first step of the DSQ photo-resist removal process. In the case of its application the ten-dency towards stronger cross-linking during the DSQ-process could be observed already after the first step of the process. As to the possible mechanisms of the cross-linking, various suggestions have been made.

This dissertation introduced the fabrication and characterization of structured cylindrical TiNi thin films by magnetron sputtering, lithography and wet etching based on previous developments of shape memory alloy films. The results presented in this dissertation were never achieved before for any other research group. The TiNi thin films devices fabricated in this work have high potential for application as vascular implants, e.g. stents. The deposition of TiNi thin films on a cylindrical substrate employs a specific device which allows an in situ rotation of the substrate during the sputtering process and the use of a slit aperture to control the deposition angle. The introduction of this slit aperture resolved the film growth issue. However it reduced the deposition rate by a factor of 15. The mechanical properties of the deposited cylindrical TiNi films were tested by tensile testing. Axial and radial directions of the film were tested and both film directions showed a comparable mechanical properties with TiNi planar films. Superelastic plateau, closed loop hysteresis and a strain up to 6 % were observed. The crystallization mechanisms as a function of film thickness, annealing time and substrate were analyzed in cylindrical deposited TiNi thin film. XRD and TEM analysis have shown that 5 minutes annealing time at 650 °C first step and 450 °C second step is enough to crystallize the cylindrical TiNi thin films, which is essential for the fabrication of hybrid devices (thin film stents and conventional TiNi devices). A rotational UV lithography device based on the standard photolithography process to pattern cylindrical substrates of different diameters and lengths with a feature resolution down to 5 µm and an axial resolution (Δy) of 3 µm was developed and characterized. The developed rotational UV lithography device allows the patterning of complex geometries on the surface of a cylindrical substrate and was successfully employed to pattern cylindrical TiNi thin film. Wet etching technology was used to structure cylindrical TiNi films. The influence of etching parameters: movement of the etchant and etchant composition on the etching rate and lateral ratio was also analyzed and optimized during this research. Thus, this wet etching analysis allowed us to optimize the etchant solution thereby achieving a lateral ratio of 0.76. A deposition method was developed and patented to fabricate "thick" films with a very small mesh, based on UV lithography and wet etching technology. This method is a promising substitute for the solid state laser technology, as the aspect ratio of this method is comparable to the 10:1 ratio achieved by laser cut technology. In addition, it does not produce small burrs, as well as a heat affected zone or micro cracks. This method further avoids a possible contamination of the TiNi material with carbides.

In dieser Arbeit wurde die Verwendung von Polymer-Metall-Nanokompositen zur Anwendung als Sensoren für organische Dämpfe untersucht. Dabei wurde das Schwellverhalten der Polymersubstrate genutzt, deren Ausdehnung eine Änderung der Abstände und damit der Tunnelwiderstände durch die quasi 2-dimensionale Metallclusterschicht an der Polymeroberfläche hervorruft. Des Weiteren wurden photoschaltbare Moleküle untersucht, welche in Polymerfilmen gelöst wurden. Durch die Änderung der Konformation dieser Moleküle durch Bestrahlung mit Licht definierter Wellenlängen wurde hier ebenfalls eine Volumenänderung der organsichen Dünnfilme hervorgerufen, welche wieder eine Widerstandsänderung in den Metallclusterfilmen zur Folge hatten. Diese Komposite bieten dadurch die Möglichkeit zum Einsatz als photoschaltbare Kondensatoren, Bragg-Reflektoren oder elektrische Schalter.

Interfaces of solid electrolyte and electrode were studied for a possible supercaps assembling. Three different electrolytes with Au, Pt and LiCOO2 electrodes were treated in different arrangements.

Studies of the plasmonic materials remain a hot, active and expanding field of science and technology. Moreover, manufacturing of novel nanocomposites, micro-and nanodevices with specific features require the development of powerful and flexible techniques to control and optimize their structural and physical properties. In this context, co-deposition of polymer molecules and metal atoms from two independent sources, as presented in my work, provides a simple way to manipulate the shape and distribution of metal clusters. This in turn allows the alternations of the optical and electrical properties. Vapor phase co-deposition of Au and Ag simultaneously with various polymers (Teflon, PAMS, Nylon, and PMMA) was successfully used to produce polymer/metal nanocomposites with a wide range of metal volume filling factor. The growth of metallic nanoclusters in polymers is controlled by the strongly contrasting properties of the two materials. This leads to aggregation of the high cohesive metal with the formation of spherical nanoclusters in polymer matrix. The cluster distribution in the polymer matrix, and the size and shape of the individual clusters strongly depend on the condensation coefficient of the metal on the polymer surface during deposition. The condensation coefficient depends on the ratio of the deposition rates of metal and polymer, the type of metal-polymer combination, the substrate temperature and the nucleation density. The optical properties of the composites are strongly related with the microstructure of the composites. The position, intensity and width of the particle plasmon resonance were determined as a function of the metal volume filling factor, cluster size, shape, distribution, intercluster separation, the type of metal and the surrounding dielectric medium. Changes of the microstructure of the composite film upon annealing allowed to demonstrate the effect of interparticle distance and size of the clusters on the plasmonic properties of the composites. This shift of the absorption maximum is mainly caused by an increase in the distance between the clusters by agglomeration during the heat treatment, which leads to a decrease in the number density of the clusters. Bimetallic nanoclusters in polymers exhibit a single plasmon band which is mainly dependent on the alloy composition. For gold/silver bimetallic clusters the position of the band is shifted linearly to longer wavelength with an increase in the gold fraction. Also the electrical properties of nanocomposites consisting of three dimensionally distributed Au or Ag nanoclusters in Teflon and Nylon matrices were investigated. The electrical conductivity was investigated as a function of metal filling factor, and the percolation threshold was found at f = 0.42 and f = 0.32 for Teflon and Nylon composites, respectively. The IV characteristics of Teflon composites containing Au nanoclusters showed different responses for various Au concentrations. Similarly, the resistance versus temperature curves showed different trend for samples with Au concentrations below and above the percolation threshold, respectively. In conclusion, the physical co-deposition of metal and polymer has been found as a promising technique to produce metal-polymer nanocomposites for various applications.

In der heutigen Gesellschaft spielt der mobile Kommunikations- und Datenverkehr eine immer größere Rolle. Mit diesem massiv wachsenden Markt geht ein dementsprechender Entwicklungsbedarf im Bereich der dazugehörigen, technologischen Komponenten einher. So ist es ein Entwicklungsziel, die induktiven Komponenten, wie sie z.B. in MMICs (Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit) integriert sind, immer weiter zu verkleinern, während gleichzeitig ebenfalls ihre Hochfrequenzeigenschaften verbessert werden sollen. Integrierte Mikroinduktoren bestehen beim heutigen Stand der Technik in den meisten Fällen aus planaren Spiralen ohne einen magnetischen Kern, welche eine relativ große Oberfläche auf einem Chip belegen. Die Verwendung von Mikroinduktoren mit einem weichmagnetischen Kernmaterial führt durch die Erhöhung der Induktivität und des Gütefaktors zu einer erwünschten Verkleinerung bei gleichzeitiger Verringerung von Streufeldern. Neben den Geometrien der Mikroinduktoren selbst ist die Entwicklung geeigneter weichmagnetischer Dünnfilme von entscheidender Bedeutung. Der in dieser Arbeit verfolgte Ansatz zur Herstellung solcher weichmagnetischer Schichten besteht in der Verwendung von Metall/Polymer Nanokompositen. Diese wurden über eine Abscheidung von weichmagnetischen Legierungen zusammen mit Fluorpolymeren mittels Vakuum-Gasphasenabscheideverfahren realisiert. Die Abscheidung der beiden Komponenten erfolgte sowohl gleichzeitig als auch abwechselnd, wodurch verschiedene Nanostrukturen des Komposits realisiert wurden. Die Filme wurden hinsichtlich der Struktur und Zusammensetzung der Komposite und auch hinsichtlich ihrer magnetischen Eigenschaften charakterisiert. Nanostrukturierte FeNiCo/PTFE-Multilagenfilme, bei denen während der Abscheidung eine Anisotropie über ein statisches Magnetfeld induziert wurde, weisen eine Resonanzfrequenz von fr = 4,8 GHz und eine Hochfrequenzpermeabilität µ’ ≈ 60 bei 100 MHz auf. Es treten keine signifikanten Verluste bei Frequenzen < 1,5 GHz auf, und es ergibt sich ein sehr guter Gütefaktor Q = 20 bei 2 GHz für diese Kompositfilme. Diese Eigenschaften sind eine exzellente Grundlage für den Einsatz der Filme als Kernmaterial in Mikroinduktoren. Die Integrierbarkeit der Metall/Polymer Nanokompositfilme in standard-CMOS Prozessverfahren wurde anhand eines toroidförmigen Mikroinduktors erfolgreich umgesetzt. Weiterhin wurde ein faszinierender, neuer und selbstorganisierter Wachstumsprozess untersucht. Beim Co-Verdampfen einer FeNiCo Legierung mit Teflon AF entsteht bei geeigneten Prozessparametern ein Nanokomposit, bestehend aus magnetischen Nanosäulen mit einem Durchmesser von wenigen Nanometern und hohem Aspektverhältnis, eingebettet in einer isolierenden Polymermatrix. Dieser Wachstumsprozess und die magnetischen Eigenschaften solcher Nanosäulen-Kompositfilme wurde im Verlauf dieser Arbeit genauer untersucht.

Im Rahmen dieser Doktorarbeit wurde die Adhäsionssteigerung durch Auslagerung von Polycarbonat-Edelmetallfilmverbunden weiter aufgeklärt und nachgewiesen, dass eine Adhäsionssteigerung auch unterhalb der Volumenglasübergangstemperatur von Bisphenol-A-Polycarbonat möglich ist. Durch Getterung thermisch eingebetteter Goldnanopartikel gelang die Verankerung aufgedampfter Goldfilme (Nanonailing) in Bisphenol-A-Polycarbonatfilmen. Bei Untersuchung der Einbettbedingungen gelang die Aufklärung der Einbettmorphologie durch den Vergleich von experimentellen Daten aus der Röntgenphotoelektronenspektroskopie mit den Ergebnissen von Modellrechnungen. Alternativ zur thermischen Einbettung wurde die Dispersion von Goldnanopartikeln in Polycarbonat durch lösungsmitteldampfinduzierte Kristallisation geprüft und ein Dispersionsmodell entwickelt, das auf der Betrachtung der thermodynamischen Vorzugspositionen der Goldnanopartikel in den amorphen Bereichen im Gegensatz zu den kristallisierten Bereichen beruht.

The main motivation of the present work was to study the competition between microphase separation and crystallization in crystallizable block copolymers, as well as to contribute to the understanding of the crystallization process in polymers by following the crystallization kinetics in a confined microphase. Sequential living anionic polymerization has been employed to synthesize novel polybutadiene-block-polystyrene-blockpoly(ethylene oxide) (PB-b-PS-b-PEO) linear triblock terpolymers where the PEO is able to crystallize. The further catalytic hydrogenation lead to polyethylene-blockpolystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PE-b-PS-b-PEO), a triblock terpolymer with two crystallizable blocks. The morphology in bulk of the different triblock terpolymer compositions was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Thin film morphology was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Crystallization kinetics of both PEO and PE blocks was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) using different thermal protocols and the data were fitted to the Avrami equation.

Metamaterials offer a unique opportunity to engineer optical properties at will. This work was devoted to the exploration and investigation of optical properties of metamaterials and for practical realization of optical devises based on metamaterials. Particularly, a complete theory of light propagation through ordered thick macroporous silicon arrays was developed. An improved effective medium theory was developed for calculations of effective dielectric constants of porous semiconductors and applied to the explanation and identification of types of optical anisotropies in several porous semiconductor materials and composite materials made on the basis of porous silicon. Based on the theoretical formalism developed, it was shown that porous Silicon in various geometries and morphologies can be used for following novel optical elements: mesoporous Si far IR filters; mid and far IR macroporous Si filters; Macroporous Silicon UV Filters; Polarization components for the UV range; Retroreflection suppression plates; Omnidirectional IR and visible wavelengths filters. A modified effective medium approximation was developed that accounts for higher order interactions between metal nanoparticles in metal-dielectric composite materials for medium and near-percolation metal concentrations. The magneto-optical effects in metal-dielectric nanocomposite materials have been analyzed at low, medium, and near-percolation metal concentrations. The predicted magneto-optical enhancement factors were compared with electromagnetic field enhancement factors.

The novel SEA (Single Element Arrangement) concept for SOFC consists of a single material to complete the whole galvanic cell. Essential of the SEA concept is the in-situ electrode formation. Such kind of material becomes mixed ionic and electronic conducting in the surface region, while still being predominantly ionically conducting inside under the working conditions. Electronic short circuit will be blocked by the region where ionic conduction is dominant, allowing the generation of electromotive force. In this work, several materials that were considered to be possible candidates for SEA applications were investigated, with the focus on modification of the electronic conductivity by appropriate doping in the well-known electrolyte materials, including samarium doped ceria (SDC), yttria doped barium cerate and LSGM.

The engineering of junction formation and the electrode kinetics with respect to gas sensing has been investigated in electrochemical cells based on LiSiPO and Garnet electrolyte for the possibility of CO2 detection. Li2CO3 and Au paste were always used as sensing electrode and showed good agreement with Nernst equation. Compared all the sensors which were investigated in this work, LiMn2O4 reference electrode and LiSiPO electrolyte shows the best performance.

In dieser Arbeit wurden Polymer-Metall-Nanokomposite durch gleichzeitiges Sputtern von Silber und Polymeren aus zwei unabhängigen Magnetron-Sputterquellen hergestellt. Durch die vernetzte Struktur und die dielektrischen Eigenschaften eignet sich PTFE zur Verwendung als Matrixmaterial. Der Metallgehalt der Kompositfilme wurde über die Messung von EDX-Intensitäten ermittelt. Die Größe der Nanopartikel wurde mit Hilfe von TEM und XRD bestimmt und liegt im Bereich von 10 nm. Die Kompositmaterialien zeigen an der Perkolationsgrenze einen schlagartigen Übergang der Eigenschaften vom polymer- zum metallähnlichen Verhalten. Der spezifische Widerstand fällt in einem Bereich zwischen 35 und 40 % Silbergehalt um mindestens neun Größenordnungen ab. Die optischen Eigenschaften ändern sich mit dem Metallgehalt. Die durch Plasmonenresonanz verursachte Absorption, die bei kleinen Füllgraden bei ca. 400 nm ihr Maximum hat und eine intensive gelbe Farbe des Kompositmaterials zur Folge hat, verschiebt sich mit zunehmendem Silbergehalt zu längeren Wellenlängen. Die Unterschiede im optischen Verhalten der Nanokomposite und der reinen Polymere lässt sich bei der Herstellung von Bragg-Reflektoren ausnutzen. Leichte Änderungen im Metallgehalt können bei den Polymer-Silber-Nanokompositen im Bereich der Perkolationsschwelle also eine drastische Änderung in den Eigenschaften bewirken, wodurch Anwendungen als Sensoren denkbar sind.

The present work goes far beyond the already known aspects of alkali metal adsorption on transition metal dichalcogenides and will consider it in a new and further manner. Until now, the investigations of this topic were restricted to only few metals like, e.g. alkali metals, which cannot be handled on a technological scale. In this thesis, technologically relevant adsorbate metals like chromium, silver or copper were chosen and the adsorbate structures were investigated by different experiments (SEM, EDX, AFM). One basic requirement for a systematic investigation is the conservation of constant preparation conditions. Therefore, a completely new preparation chamber had to be constructed. The successful operation of the chamber enables the variation of the deposition parameters (deposition amount, substrate temperature) systematically and offers the possibility to investigate the influence of the deposition parameters on the growth parameters and on the occuring structures. On the crystal surfaces a large unknown variety of structures can be observed, depending highly on the adsorbate/substrate system, amount of deposited metal and substrate temperature. This large variety was discussed in the context of existing theoretical models of growth phenomena and the dominating growth parameters. In addition to the interaction of adsorbate/substrate and the resulting destruction of the crystal surface, the diffusion length of the adsorbate atoms is identified as one dominating parameter for the structure formation. A new method for measuring this quantity demonstrates the distinct deviation from general growth concepts.

Low energy ion beam irradiation proved itself to be suitable technique to alter chemical and physical properties of polymer surfaces. Spin coated thin films and commercial sheets of polymers were irradiated with argon, nitrogen and oxygen ions at energies of 0.5 – 5 keV in the fluence range from 10E12 to 10E16 cm-2. When ion interacts with polymer surface, chain bonds are broken resulting in the formation of smaller molecules, many of which may be volatile that are desorbed. At the same time, formed free radicals participate in different reactions during which the chemistry of polymer surfaces is easily and irreversibly changed resulting in alteration of polymer surface properties. Polymer sputter rates were found to depend on polymer chemistry and ion beam parameters. The sputter rates of polymers decreased strongly with the ion fluence, followed by constant removal rate in the steady-state region. The decrease of typically one order of magnitude was attributed to the chemical changes in polymer structure that occurred in the ion fluence range 10E13 – 10E15 cm-2 depending on polymer chemistry, ion energy and type. Induced changes in the polymer surface layer showed large influence on metal/polymer adhesion properties. Three types of practical adhesion strength, measured using 90° peel test, were observed: (i) adhesion increased with the ion fluence until saturation was reached; (ii) peel strength increased at low ion fluencies, reached maximum and at prolonged treatment decreased; (iii) no improvement in the peel strength on treated polymer surfaces was recorded. XPS analysis of peeled-off surfaces showed that in most cases the failure location changed from interfacial for untreated polymers to cohesive failure in the polymer for treated surfaces. An improvement in the metal polymer adhesion in the ion fluence range 10E13 – 10E16 cm-2 is attributed to the creation of a large density of new adsorption sites resulting in larger contact area and incorporation of chemically active groups that lead to the increased interaction between metal and polymer through metal-oxygen/nitrogen-polymer species formation.

(Keine Zusammenfassung in englischer Sprache hinterlegt.) In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde die elektrochemische Porenbildung in Silizium und Siliziumoxid untersucht. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit ging es um die Untersuchung von Makro und Mesoporen in n-Typ Silizium, die sich in fluoridhaltigen Elektrolyten bei Anlegen einer anodischen Spannung bilden. Es wurde ein neuer Makroporenporenwachstumsmodus gefunden, der es erlaubt, Makroporen mit einem Vielfachen der bisherigen Geschwindigkeit herzustellen. Hierbei unterscheidet sich die Porenqualität und -geometrie nicht wesentlich von den guten Ergebnissen bei den deutlich langsameren, konventionellen Ätzverfahren. Um diese Poren zu erhalten muss ein schwach oxidierender Elektrolyt mit hohen Flusssäurekonzentrationen kombiniert werden. Das Parameterfeld für diese Porensorte wurde eingehend untersucht und ein Erklärungsmodell für dieses Wachstumsverhaltens erstellt. In weiteren Teilen wurde die Parameterabhängigkeit der Geometrie von Mesoporen untersucht. Im zweiten Abschnitt der Arbeit werden poröse Siliziumoxide untersucht, die sich bei hohen anodischen Spannungen bilden. Andere elektrochemisch hergestellte poröse Oxidsysteme, z.B. Aluminiumoxid, haben eine große Anwendungsbandbreite, während elektrochemisch hergestellte poröse Oxidmodifikationen in Silizium nur wenig untersucht sind. Für die Versuche dieser Arbeit wurden schwach basisch gepufferte, fluorhaltige Elektrolyte verwendet mit niedriger Oxidauflösungsrate. Die Kennlinie in der zyklischen Voltammetrie weist für diese Elektrolyten eine ungewöhnlich starke Hysterese zwischen Vor- und Rücklauf auf, die mit elektrischer Impedanzspektroskopie untersucht wurde. Bei längeren potentiostatischen Versuchen zwischen 10 und 16 V wächst ein dünner poröser SiO2-Film auf der Siliziumoberfläche. Bei höheren Spannungen bilden sich regelmäßige Oberflächenkorrugationen, die mit einem dünnen porösen SiO2-Film bedeckt sind. Diese beiden unterschiedlichen Morphologien wurden mit einem Rasterelektronenmikroskop untersucht. Sowohl zu den unterschiedlichen Morphologien als auch zur starken Hysterese der Kennlinie wurde in der vorliegenden Arbeit ein Erklärungsmodell erarbeitet.

Perovskite-type lead titanate-based ferroelectrics became the most prominent candidates for applications in different kinds of modern transducers, sensors and actuators. Particular interest in these materials is driven by their unique dielectric, ferroelectric, pyroelectric and piezoelectric characteristics. The application of these materials in thin film form is even more attractive since it allows direct integration into existent semiconductor technology. The properties of lead-titanate based ferroelectrics are known to strongly depend on the stoichiometry and nature of substituent elements either on Pb (A) or Ti (B) sites. In this respect, appropriate doping by different elements offers the possibility to tune materials functional properties. A modified sol-gel method was adopted to fabricate lead titanate thin films doped with Ce, Sm, Dy, Er and Yb. The structural, dielectric, ferroelectric, leakage current and functional properties were investigated in order to reveal the effects of nature and concentration of doping ions, substrate heterostructure and film thickness on the main characteristics of the films.
