Search

Context. The study of the multiplicity of massive stars gives hints on their formation processes and their evolutionary paths, which are still not fully understood. Large separation binaries (>50 milliseconds of arc, mas) can be probed by adaptive-optics-assisted direct imaging and sparse aperture masking, while close binaries can be resolved by photometry and spectroscopy. However, optical long baseline interferometry is mandatory to establish the multiplicity of Galactic massive stars at the separation gap between 1 and 50 mas. Aims. In this paper, we aim to demonstrate the capability of the new interferometric instrument MIRC-X, located at the CHARA Array, to study the multiplicity of O-type stars and therefore probe the full range of separation for more than 120 massive stars (H < 7.5 mag). Methods. We initiated a pilot survey of bright O-type stars (H < 6.5 mag) observable with MIRC-X. We observed 29 O-type stars, including two systems in average atmospheric conditions around a magnitude of H = 7.5 mag. We systematically reduced the obtained data with the public reduction pipeline of the instrument. We analyzed the reduced data using the dedicated python software CANDID to detect companions. Results. Out of these 29 systems, we resolved 19 companions in 17 different systems with angular separations between ~0.5 and 50 mas. This results in a multiplicity fraction fm = 17/29 = 0.59 ± 0.09, and an average number of companions fc = 19/29 = 0.66 ± 0.13. Those results are in agreement with the results of the SMASH+ survey in the Southern Hemisphere. Thirteen of these companions have been resolved for the first time, including the companion responsible for the nonthermal emission in Cyg OB2-5 A and the confirmation of the candidate companion of HD 47129 suggested by SMASH+. Context. Binarity and multiplicity appear to be a common outcome in star formation. In particular, the binary fraction of massive (OB-type) stars can be very high. In many cases, the further stellar evolution of these stars is affected by binary interactions at some stage during their lifetime. The origin of this high binarity and the binary parameters are poorly understood because observational constraints are scarce, which is predominantly due to a dearth of known young massive binary systems. Aims. We aim to identify and describe massive young binary systems in order to fill in the gaps of our knowledge of primordial binarity of massive stars, which is crucial for our understanding of massive star formation. Methods. We observed the two massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) PDS 27 and PDS 37 at the highest spatial resolution provided by VLTI/PIONIER in the H-band (1.3 mas). We applied geometrical models to fit the observed squared visibilities and closure phases. In addition, we performed a radial velocity analysis using published VLT/FORS2 spectropolarimetric and VLT/X-shooter spectroscopic observations. Results. Our findings suggest binary companions for both objects at 12 mas (30 au) for PDS 27 and at 22–28 mas (42–54 au) for PDS 37. This means that they are among the closest MYSO binaries resolved to date. Conclusions. Our data spatially resolve PDS 27 and PDS 37 for the first time, revealing two of the closest and most massive (>8 M⊙) YSO binary candidates to date. We present very detailed images of the photosphere of an AGB star obtained with the PIONIER instrument, installed at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). The images show a well defined stellar disc populated by a few convective patterns. Thanks to the high precision of the observations we are able to derive the contrast and granulation horizontal scale of the convective pattern for the first time in a direct way. Such quantities are then compared with scaling relations between granule size, effective temperature, and surface gravity that are predicted by simulations of stellar surface convection. Context. Convection is a candidate to explain the trigger of red supergiant star mass loss. Owing to the small size of the convective cells on the photosphere, few of their characteristics are known. Aims. Using near infrared interferometry, we intend to resolve the photosphere of red supergiant stars and to bring new constraints on their modeling. Methods. We observed the nearby red supergiant Antares using the 4-telescope instrument VLTI/PIONIER. We collected data on the three available configurations of the 1.8m telescopes in the H band. Results. We obtained unprecedented angular resolution on the disk of a star (6% of the star angular diameter) that limits the mean size of convective cells, brings new constraints on numerical simulations. Using an analytical model with a distribution of bright spots we determine their effect on the visibility signal. Conclusion. We determine that the interferometric signal on Antares is compatible with convective cells with various sizes from 45% to 5% of the angular diameter. We also conclude that convective cells can strongly affect the angular diameter and limb-darkening measurements. We present the first optical observation of the microquasar SS 433 at sub-milliarcsecond (mas) scale obtained with the GRAVITY instrument on the Very Large Telescope interferometer (VLTI). The 3.5-h exposure reveals a rich K-band spectrum dominated by hydrogen Br and He i lines, as well as (red-shifted) emission lines coming from the jets. The K-band-continuum-emitting region is dominated by a marginally resolved point source (<1 mas) embedded inside a diffuse background accounting for 10% of the total flux. The jet line positions agree well with the ones expected from the jet kinematic model, an interpretation also supported by the consistent sign (i.e., negative/positive for the receding/approaching jet component) of the phase shifts observed in the lines. The significant visibility drop across the jet lines, together with the small and nearly identical phases for all baselines, point toward a jet that is offset by less than 0.5 mas from the continuum source and resolved in the direction of propagation, with a typical size of 2 mas. The jet position angle of ~80° is consistent with the expected one at the observation date. Jet emission so close to the central binary system would suggest that line locking, if relevant to explain the amplitude and stability of the 0:26c jet velocity, operates on elements heavier than hydrogen. The Br profile is broad and double peaked. It is better resolved than the continuum and the change of the phase signal sign across the line on all baselines suggests an East-West-oriented geometry similar to the jet direction and supporting a (polar) disk wind origin. Aims: We present near-infrared interferometry of the carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star R Sculptoris (R Scl). Methods: We employ medium spectral resolution K-band interferometry obtained with the instrument AMBER at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) and H-band low spectral resolution interferometric imaging observations obtained with the VLTI instrument PIONIER. We compare our data to a recent grid of dynamic atmosphere and wind models. We compare derived fundamental parameters to stellar evolution models. Results: The visibility data indicate a broadly circular resolved stellar disk with a complex substructure. The observed AMBER squared visibility values show drops at the positions of CO and CN bands, indicating that these lines form in extended layers above the photosphere. The AMBER visibility values are best fit by a model without a wind. The PIONIER data are consistent with the same model. We obtain a Rosseland angular diameter of 8.9 ± 0.3 mas, corresponding to a Rosseland radius of 355 ± 55 R⊙, an effective temperature of 2640 ± 80 K, and a luminosity of log L/L⊙ = 3.74 ± 0.18. These parameters match evolutionary tracks of initial mass 1.5 ± 0.5 M⊙ and current mass 1.3 ± 0.7 M⊙. The reconstructed PIONIER images exhibit a complex structure within the stellar disk including a dominant bright spot located at the western part of the stellar disk. The spot has an H-band peak intensity of 40% to 60% above the average intensity of the limb-darkening-corrected stellar disk. The contrast between the minimum and maximum intensity on the stellar disk is about 1:2.5. Conclusions. Our observations are broadly consistent with predictions by dynamic atmosphere and wind models, although models with wind appear to have a circumstellar envelope that is too extended compared to our observations. The detected complex structure within the stellar disk is most likely caused by giant convection cells, resulting in large-scale shock fronts, and their effects on clumpy molecule and dust formation seen against the photosphere at distances of 2-3 stellar radii. Context. MWC158 is a star with the B[e] phenomenon that shows strong spectrophotometric variability (in lines and in UV and visible continuum) attributed to phases of shell ejection. The evolutionary stage of this star was never clearly determined. Previous interferometric, spectropolarimetric and spectro-interferometric studies suggest a disk morphology for its environment. Aims. We investigate the origin of the variability within the inner astronomical unit of the central star using near-infrared interferometric observations with PIONIER at the VLTI over a two-year period. Methods. We performed an image reconstruction of the circumstellar environment using the SPARCO method. We discovered that the morphology of the circumstellar environment could vary on timescales of weeks or days. We carried out a parametric fit of the data with a model consisting of a star, a disk and a bright spot that represents a brighter emission in the disk. Results. We detect strong morphological changes in the first astronomical unit around the star, that happen on a timescale of few months. We cannot account for such variability well with a binary model. Our parametric model fits the data well and allows us to extract the location of the asymmetry for different epochs. Conclusions. For the first time, we detect a morphological variability in the environment of MWC158. This variability is reproduced by a model of a disk and a bright spot. The locations of the bright spot suggest that it is located in the disk, but its precise motion is not determined. Aims. We present the first near-IR milli-arcsecond-scale image of a post-AGB binary that is surrounded by hot circumbinary dust. Methods. A very rich interferometric data set in six spectral channels was acquired of IRAS 08544-4431 with the new RAPID camera on the PIONIER beam combiner at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). A broadband image in the H-band was reconstructed by combining the data of all spectral channels using the SPARCO method. Results. We spatially separate all the building blocks of the IRAS 08544-4431 system in our milliarcsecond-resolution image. Our dissection reveals a dust sublimation front that is strikingly similar to that expected in early-stage protoplanetary disks, as well as an unexpected flux signal of ~4% from the secondary star. The energy output from this companion indicates the presence of a compact circum-companion accretion disk, which is likely the origin of the fast outflow detected in Hff. Conclusions. Our image provides the most detailed view into the heart of a dusty circumstellar disk to date. Spatially resolving the inner dust cavity (or gap) of the so-called (pre-)transitional disks is a key to understanding the connection between the processes of planetary formation and disk dispersal. The disk around the Herbig star HD139614 is of particular interest since it presents a pretransitional nature with an au-sized gap structure that is spatially resolved by mid-infrared interferometry in the dust distribution. With the aid of new near-infrared interferometric observations, we aim to characterize the 0.1-10 au region of the HD 139614 disk further and then identify viable mechanisms for the inner disk clearing. We report the first multiwavelength modeling of the interferometric data acquired on HD 139614 with the VLTI instruments PIONIER, AMBER, and MIDI, complemented by Herschel/PACS photometric measurements. We first performed a geometrical modeling of the new near-infrared interferometric data, followed by radiative transfer modeling of the complete dataset using the code RADMC3D. We confirm the presence of a gap structure in the warm µm-sized dust distribution, extending from about 2.5 au to 6 au, and constrained the properties of the inner dust component: e.g., a radially increasing dust surface density profile, and a depletion in dust of ~10³ relative to the outer disk. Since selfshadowing and photoevaporation appears unlikely to be responsible for the au-sized gap of HD 139614, we thus tested if dynamical clearing could be a viable mechanism using hydrodynamical simulations to predict the structure of the gaseous disk. Indeed, a narrow au-sized gap is consistent with the expected effect of the interaction between a single giant planet and the disk. Assuming that small dust grains are well coupled to the gas, we found that an approximately 3 Mjup planet located at ~4.5 au from the star could, in less than 1 Myr, reproduce most of the aspects of the dust surface density profile, while no significant depletion (in gas) occurred in the inner disk, in contrast to the dust. However, this "dust-depleted" inner disk could be explained by the expected dust filtration by the gap and the efficient dust growth/fragmentation occurring in the inner disk regions. Our results support the hypothesis of a giant planet opening a gap and shaping the inner region of the HD 139614 disk. Context. Long-baseline interferometry is an important technique to spatially resolve binary or multiple systems in close orbits. By combining several telescopes together and spectrally dispersing the light, it is possible to detect faint components around bright stars in a few hours of observations. Aims. We provide a rigorous and detailed method to search for high-contrast companions around stars, determine the detection level, and estimate the dynamic range from interferometric observations. Methods. We developed the code CANDID (Companion Analysis and Non-Detection in Interferometric Data), a set of Python tools that allows us to search systematically for point-source, high-contrast companions and estimate the detection limit using all interferometric observables, i.e., the squared visibilities, closure phases and bispectrum amplitudes. The search procedure is made on a N × N grid of fit, whose minimum needed resolution is estimated a posteriori. It includes a tool to estimate the detection level of the companion in the number of sigmas. The code CANDID also incorporates a robust method to set a 3σ detection limit on the flux ratio, which is based on an analytical injection of a fake companion at each point in the grid. Our injection method also allows us to analytically remove a detected component to 1) search for a second companion; and 2) set an unbiased detection limit. Results.We used CANDID to search for the companions around the binary Cepheids V1334 Cyg, AX Cir, RT Aur, AWPer, SU Cas, and T Vul. First, we showed that our previous discoveries of the components orbiting V1334 Cyg and AX Cir were detected at >25σ and >13σ, respectively. The astrometric positions and flux ratios provided by CANDID for these two stars are in good agreement with our previously published values. The companion around AW Per is detected at more than 15σ with a flux ratio of f = 1:22 ± 0:30%, and it is located at ρ = 32:16 ± 0:29 mas and PA = 67:1 ± 0:3°. We made a possible detection of the companion orbiting RT Aur with f = 0:22 ± 0:11%, and at ρ = 2:10 ± 0:23 mas and PA = -136 ± 6°. It was detected at 3.8σ using the closure phases only, and so more observations are needed to confirm the dectection. No companions were detected around SU Cas and T Vul. We also set the detection limit for possible undetected companions around these stars. We found that there is no companion with a spectral type earlier than B7V, A5V, F0V, B9V, A0V, and B9V orbiting the Cepheids V1334 Cyg, AX Cir, RT Aur, AW Per, SU Cas, and T Vul, respectively. This work also demonstrates the capabilities of the MIRC and PIONIER instruments, which can reach a dynamic range of 1:200, depending on the angular distance of the companion and the (u, v) plane coverage. Context. The stellar population in the central parsec of the Galaxy is dominated in mass and number by an old (several Gyr) population, but young (6 ± 2 Myr), massive stars dominate the luminosity function. The most luminous of these stars is an M1 supergiant, GCIRS 7. Aims. We have studied GCIRS 7 in order to constrain the age of the recent star formation event in the Galactic centre and to characterise it as a visibility and phase reference for observations of the Galactic centre with the interferometric instrument GRAVITY, which will equip the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) in the near future. Methods. We present the first H-band interferometric observations of GCIRS 7, obtained using the PIONIER visitor instrument on the VLTI using the four 8.2-m unit telescopes. In addition, we present unpublished K-band VLTI/AMBER data and build JHKL light curves based on archival data spanning almost 40 years, and measured the star's effective temperature using SINFONI integral field spectroscopy. Results. GCIRS 7 is marginally resolved in the H band with a uniform-disk diameter ϑUD(2013) = 1.076 ± 0.093 mas (RUD(2013) = 960 ± 92 R⊙ at 8.33 ± 0:35 kpc). We detect a significant circumstellar contribution in the K band. The star and its environment are variable in brightness and in size. The photospheric H-band variations are modelled well with two periods: P0 ≃ 470 ± 10 days (amplitude ≃0.64 mag) and long secondary period PLSP ≃ 2700–2850 days (amplitude ≃1.1 mag). As measured from 12CO equivalent width, 〈Teff〉 = 3600 ± 195 K. Conclusions. The size, periods, luminosity (〉Mbol〉 = –8:44 ± 0:22), and effective temperature are consistent with an M1 supergiant with an initial mass of 22:5±2:5 M⊙ and an age of 6.5-10 Myr (depending on rotation). This age is in remarkable agreement with most estimates for the recent star formation event in the central parsec. Caution should be taken when using this star as a phase reference or visibility calibrator because it is variable in size, is surrounded by a variable circumstellar environment, and large convection cells may form on its photosphere. Context. Constraining the gas and dust disk structure of transition disks, particularly in the inner dust cavity, is a crucial step toward understanding the link between them and planet formation. HD 135344B is an accreting (pre-)transition disk that displays the CO 4.7 μm emission extending tens of AU inside its 30 AU dust cavity. Aims. We constrain HD 135344B's disk structure from multi-instrument gas and dust observations. Methods.We used the dust radiative transfer code MCFOST and the thermochemical code ProDiMo to derive the disk structure from the simultaneous modeling of the spectral energy distribution (SED), VLT/CRIRES CO P(10) 4.75 μm, Herschel/PACS [O I] 63 μm, Spitzer/IRS, and JCMT 12CO J = 3-2 spectra, VLTI/PIONIER H-band visibilities, and constraints from (sub-)mm continuum interferometry and near-IR imaging. Results. We found a disk model able to describe the current gas and dust observations simultaneously. This disk has the following structure. (1) To simultaneously reproduce the SED, the near-IR interferometry data, and the CO ro-vibrational emission, refractory grains (we suggest carbon) are present inside the silicate sublimation radius (0:08 < R < 0:2 AU). (2) The dust cavity (R < 30 AU) is filled with gas, the surface density of the gas inside the cavity must increase with radius to fit the CO ro-vibrational line profile, a small gap of a few AU in the gas distribution is compatible with current data, and a large gap of tens of AU in the gas does not appear likely. (4) The gas-to-dust ratio inside the cavity is >100 to account for the 870 μm continuum upper limit and the CO P(10) line flux. (5) The gas-to-dust ratio in the outer disk (30 < R < 200 AU) is <10 to simultaneously describe the [O I] 63 μm line flux and the CO P(10) line profile. (6) In the outer disk, most of the gas and dust mass should be located in the midplane, and a significant fraction of the dust should be in large grains. Conclusions. Simultaneous modeling of the gas and dust is required to break the model degeneracies and constrain the disk structure. An increasing gas surface density with radius in the inner cavity echoes the effect of a migrating jovian planet in the disk structure. The low gas mass (a few Jupiter masses) throughout the HD 135344B disk supports the idea that it is an evolved disk that has already lost a large portion of its mass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Massive evolved stars contribute to the chemical enrichment of the Galaxy. When they die as supernova but also through their mass loss during the several thousands of years of their red supergiant (RSG) phase. Unfortunately the mass loss mechanism remains poorly understood. Detailed study of the CSE and photosphere of nearby RSGs is required to constrain this scenario.Betelgeuse is the closest RSG (197 pc) and therefore has a large apparent diameter (~ 42 mas) which makes it a very interesting target. For several years, our team has lead a multi-wavelength and multi-scale observing program to characterize its mass loss. We will review here our recent results in near-infrared interferometry. We aim at unveiling the observational imprint of physical mechanisms that govern planetary formation in young, multiple systems. In particular, we investigate the impact of tidal truncation on the inner circumstellar disks. We observed the emblematic system GG Tau at high-angular resolution: a hierarchical quadruple system composed of low-mass T Tauri binary stars surrounded by a well studied, massive circumbinary disk in Keplerian rotation. We used the near-IR 4-telescope combiner PIONIER on the VLTI and sparse-aperture-masking techniques on VLT/NaCo to probe this proto-planetary system at sub-au scales. We report the discovery of a significant closure-phase signal in H and Ks bands that can be reproduced with an additional low-mass companion orbiting GG Tau Ab, at a (projected) separation = 31:7 ­ 0:2 mas (4.4 au) and PA = 219:6 ­ 0:3 . This finding offers a simple explanation for several key questions in this system, including the missing-stellar-mass problem and the asymmetry of continuum emission from the inner dust disks observed at millimeter wavelengths. Composed of now five co-eval stars with 0:02 M? 0:7 M, the quintuple system GG Tau has become an ideal test case to constrain stellar evolution models at young ages (few 106 yr). Context. For over a decade, the structure of the inner cavity in the transition disk of TW Hydrae has been a subject of debate. Modeling the disk with data obtained at different wavelengths has led to a variety of proposed disk structures. Rather than being inconsistent, the individual models might point to the different faces of physical processes going on in disks, such as dust growth and planet formation. Aims. Our aim is to investigate the structure of the transition disk again and to find to what extent we can reconcile apparent model differences. Methods. A large set of high-angular-resolution data was collected from near-infrared to centimeter wavelengths. We investigated the existing disk models and established a new self-consistent radiative-transfer model. A genetic fitting algorithm was used to automatize the parameter fitting, and uncertainties were investigated in a Bayesian framework. Results. Simple disk models with a vertical inner rim and a radially homogeneous dust composition from small to large grains cannot reproduce the combined data set. Two modifications are applied to this simple disk model: (1) the inner rim is smoothed by exponentially decreasing the surface density in the inner ∼3AU, and (2) the largest grains (>100 μm) are concentrated towards the inner disk region. Both properties can be linked to fundamental processes that determine the evolution of protoplanetary disks: the shaping by a possible companion and the different regimes of dust-grain growth, respectively. Conclusions. The full interferometric data set from near-infrared to centimeter wavelengths requires a revision of existing models for the TW Hya disk. We present a new model that incorporates the characteristic structures of previous models but deviates in two key aspects: it does not have a sharp edge at 4 AU, and the surface density of large grains di ers from that of smaller grains. Context. The emergence of optical interferometers with three and more telescopes allows image reconstruction of astronomical objects at the milliarcsecond scale. However, some objects contain components with very different spectral energy distributions (SED; i.e. different temperatures), which produces strong chromatic effects on the interferograms that have to be managed with care by image reconstruction algorithms. For example, the gray approximation for the image reconstruction process results in a degraded image if the total (u; v)-coverage given by the spectral supersynthesis is used. Aims. The relative flux contribution of the central object and an extended structure changes with wavelength for different temperatures. For young stellar objects, the known characteristics of the central object (i.e., stellar SED), or even the fit of the spectral index and the relative flux ratio, can be used to model the central star while reconstructing the image of the extended structure separately. Methods. We present a new method, called SPARCO (semi-parametric algorithm for the image reconstruction of chromatic objects), which describes the spectral characteristics of both the central object and the extended structure to consider them properly when reconstructing the image of the surrounding environment. We adapted two image-reconstruction codes (Macim, Squeeze, and MiRA) to implement this new prescription. Results. SPARCO is applied using Macim, Squeeze, and MiRA on a young stellar object model and also on literature data on HR 5999 in the near-infrared with the VLTI. We obtain smoother images of the modeled circumstellar emission and improve the X2 by a factor 9. Conclusions. This method paves the way to improved aperture-synthesis imaging of several young stellar objects with existing datasets. More generally, the approach can be used on astrophysical sources with similar features, such as active galactic nuclei, planetary nebulae, and asymptotic giant branch stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims. We aim at detecting and characterizing the main-sequence companion of the Cepheid AX Cir (Porb ~ 18 yrs). The long-term objective is to estimate the mass of both components and the distance to the system. Methods. We used the PIONIER combiner at the VLT Interferometer to obtain the first interferometric measurements of the shortperiod Cepheid AX Cir and its orbiting component. Results. The companion is resolved by PIONIER at a projected separation ? = 29:2±0:2 mas and projection angle PA = 167:6±0:3°. We measured H-band flux ratios between the companion and the Cepheid of 0:90 ± 0:10% and 0:75 ± 0:17%, at pulsation phases for the Cepheid of ɸ = 0:24 and 0.48, respectively. The lower contrast at ɸ = 0:48 is due to the increased brightness of the Cepheid compared to ɸ = 0:24. This gives an average apparent magnitude mH(comp) = 9:06 ± 0:24 mag. The limb-darkened angular diameter of the Cepheid at the two pulsation phases was measured to be ?LD = 0:839 ± 0:023 mas and ?LD = 0:742 ± 0:020 mas, at ɸ = 0:24 and 0.48, respectively. A lower limit on the total mass of the system was also derived based on our measured separation, and we found MT = 9:7 ± 0:6 M๏. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Recent improvements in the sensitivity and spectral resolution of X-ray observations have led to a better understanding of the properties of matter in the near vicinity of high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXB) hosting a supergiant star and a compact object. However, the geometry and physical properties of their environments on larger scales (up to a few stellar radii) are currently only predicted by simulations but have never been directly observed. Aims. We aim to explore the environment of Vela X-1 at a few stellar radii (R⋆) of the supergiant using spatially resolved observations in the near-infrared, and to study its dynamical evolution along the nine-day orbital period of the system. Methods. We observed Vela X-1 in 2010 and 2012 using near-infrared long baseline interferometry at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI), respectively with the AMBER instrument in the K band (medium spectral resolution), and the PIONIER instrument in the H band (low spectral resolution). The PIONIER observations span one orbital period to monitor possible evolutions in the geometry of the system. Results. We resolved a structure of 8 ± 3 R⋆ from the AMBER K-band observations, and 2.0-1.2+0.7 R⋆ from the PIONIER H-band data. From the closure phase observable, we found that the circumstellar environment of Vela X-1 is symmetrical in the near-infrared. We observed comparable interferometric measurements between the continuum and the spectral lines in the K band, meaning that both emissions originate from the same forming region. From the monitoring of the system over one period in the H band in 2012, we found the signal to be constant with the orbital phase within the error bars. Conclusions. We propose three possible scenarios for this discrepancy between the two measurements: 1) there is a strong temperature gradient in the supergiant wind, leading to a hot component that is much more compact than the cool part of the wind observed in the K band; 2) we observed a diffuse shell in 2010, possibly triggered by an off-state in the accretion rate of the neutron star that was dissolved in the interstellar medium in 2012 during our second observations; or 3) the structure observed in the H band was the stellar photosphere instead of the supergiant wind. Context. Circumstellar disks are believed to be the birthplace of planets and are expected to dissipate on a timescale of a few Myr. The processes responsible for the removal of the dust and gas will strongly modify the radial distribution of the circumstellar matter and consequently the spectral energy distribution. In particular, a young planet will open a gap, resulting in an inner disk dominating the near-IR emission and an outer disk emitting mostly in the far-infrared. Aims. We analyze a full set of data involving new near-infrared data obtained with the 4-telescope combiner (VLTI/PIONIER), new mid-infrared interferometric VLTI/MIDI data, literature photometric and archival data from VLT/NaCo/SAM to constrain the structure of the transition disk around T Cha. Methods. After a preliminary analysis with a simple geometric model, we used the MCFOST radiative transfer code to simultaneously model the SED and the interferometric observables from raytraced images in the H-, L0-, and N-bands. Results. We find that the dust responsible for the strong emission in excess in the near-IR must have a narrow temperature distribution with a maximum close to the silicate sublimation temperature. This translates into a narrow inner dusty disk (0.07-0.11AU), with a significant height (H=r ~ 0:2) to increase the geometric surface illuminated by the central star. We find that the outer disk starts at about 12AU and is partially resolved by the PIONIER, SAM, and MIDI instruments. We discuss the possibility of a self-shadowed inner disk, which can extend to distances of several AU. Finally, we show that the SAM closure phases, interpreted as the signature of a candidate companion, may actually trace the asymmetry generated by forward scattering by dust grains in the upper layers of the outer disk. These observations help constrain the inclination and position angle of the disk to about +58° and -70°, respectively. Conclusions. The circumstellar environment of T Cha appears to be best described by two disks spatially separated by a large gap. The presence of matter (dust or gas) inside the gap is, however, difficult to assess with present-day observations. Our model suggests the outer disk contaminates the interferometric signature of any potential companion that could be responsible for the gap opening, and such a companion still has to be unambiguously detected. We stress the difficulty to observe point sources in bright massive disks, and the consequent need to account for disk asymmetries (e.g. anisotropic scattering) in model-dependent search for companions. Aims.We aim at measuring the stellar parameters of the two chemically peculiar components of the B9.5Vp HgMn + A2 Vm doublelined spectroscopic binary HD141556 (X Lup), whose period is 15.25 days. Methods. We combined historical radial velocity measurements with new spatially resolved astrometric observations from PIONIER/VLTI to reconstruct the three-dimensional orbit of the binary, and thus obtained the individual masses. We fit the available photometric points together with the flux ratios provided by interferometry to constrain the individual sizes, which we compared to predictions from evolutionary models. Results. The individual masses of the components are Ma = 2.84 ± 0.12 M☉ and Mb = 1.94 ± 0.09 M☉. The dynamical distance is compatible with the Hipparcos parallax. We find linear stellar radii of Ra = 2.85 ± 0.15 R☉ and Rb = 1.75 ± 0.18 R☉. This result validates a posteriori the flux ratio used in previous detailed abundance studies. Assuming coevality, we determine a slightly sub-solar initial metallicity Z = 0.012 ± 0.003 and an age of (2.8 ± 0.3) × 108 years. Finally, our results imply that the primary rotates more slowly than its synchronous velocity, while the secondary is probably synchronous. We show that strong tidal coupling during the pre-main sequence evolution followed by a full decoupling at zero-age main sequence provides a plausible explanation for these very low rotation rates. The separation varies from 8 to 15 mas over the 3-year baseline of our observations, suggesting that the components evolve on a wide and very eccentric orbit (most probably e > 0.5). These results provide evidence that the wide orbit revealed by our study is not coplanar with the orbit of the inner eclipsing binary. From our measurements of the near-infrared luminosity ratio, we constrain the spectral classification of the components in the close binary to be O6-O7, and confirm that these stars are likely main-sequence objects. Our results are discussed in the context of the bright non-thermal radio emission already reported for this system, and we provide arguments in favour of a maximum radio emission coincident with periastron passage. Aims. We explore the sensitivity and completeness of long baseline interferometric observations for detecting unknown, faint companions around bright unresolved stars. Methods. We derive a linear expression for the closure phase signature of a faint companion in the high contrast regime (≤0.1), and provide a quantitative estimation of the detection efficiency for the currently offered four-telescope configurations at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer. The results are compared to the performances provided by linear and Y-shaped interferometric configurations in order to identify the ideal array. Results. We find that all configurations have a similar efficiency in discovering companions wider than 10 mas. Assuming a closure phase accuracy of 0.25 deg that is typical of state-of-the-art instruments, we predict a median dynamic range of up to six magnitudes when stacking observations obtained at five different hour angles. Conclusions. Surveying bright stars to search for faint companions can be considered as an ideal filler programme for modern interferometric facilities because that places few constraints on the choice of the interferometric configuration. Future and planned optical long-baseline interferometers will allow rapid spectro-imaging at high angular resolution. A non-homothetic Fizeau instrument using optical fibres is one of the most promising concepts because it combines good sensitivity and high spectral resolution capabilities. However, when increasing the number of input telescopes, one critical issue is the design of the beam recombination scheme, at the heart of the instrument. Extending our previous analysis on the multi-axial ‘all-in-one’ recombination, where the beams are mixed all together, in this paper we tackle the possibility of reducing the number of pixels that are coding the fringes by compressing the pupil plane from a partially redundant output pupils configuration. Shrinking the number of pixels, which drastically increases with the number of recombined telescopes, is indeed a key issue that enables one to reach a higher limiting magnitude, but also allows one to lower the required spectral resolution and fasten the fringe reading process. By means of numerical simulations, we study the performances of existing estimators of the squared visibility with respect to the compression process. We show that not only does the model-based estimator lead to better signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) performances than the Fourier ones, but above all it is the only one that prevents the introduction of baseline mixing biases in the visibilities as the pupil plane compression rate increases. Furthermore, we show that moderate compression allows one to keep the S/N of the visibilities unaffected. Exozodiacal dust clouds are thought to be the extrasolar analogs of the Solar System's zodiacal dust. Studying these systems provides insights in the architecture of the innermost regions of planetary systems, including the Habitable Zone. Furthermore, the mere presence of the dust may result in major obstacles for direct imaging of earth-like planets. Our EXOZODI project aims to detect and study exozodiacal dust and to explain its origin. We are carrying out the first large, near-infrared interferometric survey in the northern (CHARA/FLUOR) and southern (VLTI/PIONIER) hemispheres. Preliminary results suggest a detection rate of up to 30% around A to K type stars and interesting trends with spectral type and age. The close environment of Herbig stars starts to be revealed step by step and it appears to be quite complex. Many physical phenomena interplay: the dust sublimation causing a puffed-up inner rim, a dusty halo, a dusty wind or an inner gaseous component. To investigate more deeply these regions, getting images at the first Astronomical Unit scale is necessary. This has become possible with near infrared instruments on the VLTI. We have developed a new imaging method adapted to young stellar objects where we process separately the stellar component from the rest of the image to reveal the environment by using the spectral differences between these two components.
