Microplastics pollution and salinity intrusion in freshwater ecosystem is one of the worldwide climate change consequences those have negative impacts on the physiology of aquatic organisms. Hence, a 15-day experiment was carried out where Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was exposed to different salinity gradients i.e. 0 ‰, 3 ‰, 6 ‰, 9 ‰, and 12 ‰ alone and along with 10 mg/L polyamide microplastics (PA-MP) in order to measure its effects on the hematology, gill, and intestinal morphology. The results exhibited that all the fish treated with PA-MP ingested microplastics and the quantity of accumulation was significantly greater in higher salinity gradients (9 ‰ and 12 ‰). In addition, the PA-MP treated fish showed increased glucose level and at the same time reduced hemoglobin concentration with the increase of salinity. The percentages of abnormalities in erythrocytes both cellular (twin, teardrop and spindle shaped) and nuclear (notched nuclei, nuclear bridge and karyopyknosis) significantly enhanced with PA-MP exposure again in higher salinity treatments (9 ‰ and 12 ‰). The principal component analysis (PCA) exhibited that the addition of 10 mg/L PA-MP negatively affected the hematology of Nile tilapia than that of salinity treatments alone. Besides, the exposure of PA-MP in 9 ‰ and 12 ‰ salinity gradients escalated the severity of histological damages in gills and intestine. Overall, this experiment affirms that the increase of salinity enhanced the microplastics ingestion and toxicity in Nile tilapia, therefore, PA-MP possibly is addressed as additional physiological stressors along with increased salinity gradients in environment.

Microplastics (MPs) have emerged as widespread environmental pollutants, causing significant threats to aquatic ecosystems and organisms. This review examines the toxic effects of MPs on fishes, with a focus on neurobehavioural, physiological, and reproductive impacts, as well as the underlying mechanisms of toxicity. Evidence indicates that MPs induce a range of neurobehavioural abnormalities in fishes, affecting social interactions and cognitive functions. Altered neurotransmitter levels are identified as a key mechanism driving behavioural alterations following MP exposure. Physiological abnormalities in fishes exposed to MPs are also reported, including neurotoxicity, immunotoxicity, and oxidative stress. These physiological disruptions can compromise the individual health of aquatic organisms. Furthermore, reproductive abnormalities linked to MP exposure are discussed, with a particular emphasis on disruptions in endocrine signaling pathways. These disruptions can impair reproductive success in fish species, impacting population numbers. Here we explore the critical role of endocrine disruptions in mediating reproductive effects after exposure to MPs, focusing primarily on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Our review highlights the urgent need for interdisciplinary research efforts aimed at elucidating the full extent of MP toxicity and its implications for aquatic ecosystems. Lastly, we identify knowledge gaps for future research, including investigations into the transgenerational impacts, if any, of MP exposure and quantifying synergetic/antagonistic effects of MPs with other environmental pollutants. This expanded knowledge regarding the potential risks of MPs to aquatic wildlife is expected to aid policymakers in developing mitigation strategies to protect aquatic species.

Microplastics (MPs) are synthetic contaminants that have received global attention due to their ubiquitous occurrence, extreme durability, and capacity to harm ecosystems and human health. This study investigated the occurrence of MPs in three fish species (Channa striata, Puntius sophore and Anabas testudineus) collected from two locations (Ashulia Bridge and Mirpur Road) of the Turag River, which flows alongside the Dhaka city, Bangladesh. MPs abundance (items/individuals) was highest in Channa striata (3.8 ± 0.6) from the Ashulia Bridge area and lowest in Puntius sophore (1.8 ± 0.4) from the Mirpur Road area. Fiber was found to be the most dominant (89–93%) form of MPs followed by fragments (21–35%), films (0–26%) and foams (0–5%). Globally, microplastics (MPs) contamination in aquatic organisms is emerging as an alarming phenomenon. In the present study, we investigated MPs in three commercially important fishes (Bombay duck Harpadon nehereus, ribbon fish Trichiurus lepturus and hairfin anchovy Setipinna phasa) in fresh and dried conditions collected from two sites (Chattogram and Kuakata) of the Bay of Bengal. It was evident that fresh T. lepturus ingested highest amount of MPs through the gills (6.41 mps/g) from Chattogram followed by in the gastrointestinal tract, GIT (6.20 mps/g) and in the muscle (1.20 mps/g) from Kuakata. Among the fresh fishes, H. nehereus from Kuakata accumulated highest amount of MPs (0.21 mps/g), while S. phasa from Kuakata contained the least amount of MPs (0.06 mps/g). On the other hand, among the dried fishes, T. lepturus from Kuakata contained highest amount of MPs (46.00 mps/g), while S. phasa from Kuakata retained lowest amount of MPs (2.17 mps/g). Strangely, all the dried fishes showed significantly higher amount of MPs compared to fresh fishes from both the locations. Fiber was the most dominant type of shape of MPs which accounted 66 %, followed by fragment (27.38 %), microbeads (3.59 %), film (1.48 %), foam (1.31 %) and pellet (0.25 %). Size-wise, the major portion (39.66 %) of MPs was present to be in size range less than 0.5 mm followed by 37.67 % in the size range of 0.5–1.0 mm group and rest 22.67 % within 1.0–5.0 mm. Red (41.55 %) colored MPs was the most prominent, followed by brown (22.11 %), blue (16.32 %), pink (11.69 %), purple (5.10 %), and green (2.25 %). Among polymer types, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) was the most common (38 %), followed by polystyrene (PS-22 %), polyvinyl chloride (PVC-16 %), polyamide (PA-13 %) and ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA-9 %). The present study confirms high occurrence of MPs in the dried fishes over the fresh fishes from the Bay of Bengal, with high potential of trophic transfer to the human body.
