Watsonopsestis gen. n. (Figs 5–8, 20–21, 31) Type species: Watsonopsestis smithi sp. n., by monotypy. Diagnosis The type species of the new genus is highly reminiscent externally of species of the Oriental genus Horipsestis Matumura, 1933 sharing characters such as the nearly identical wingshape and wingpattern with a conspicuously pale basal area, a darkened inner half of the median area, a similar configuration of the transverse lines and the apical streak. The two genera, however, are clearly distinguished in the genital morphology: in the male genitalia, the new genus has a considerably shorter and broader, medio-ventrally largely dilated valva, and a well-developed, rounded, lobe-like, densely setose protrusion of the transtillae, which is absent in Horipsestis, where the transtillae are fused into a knob-like medial plate. Furthermore, the transtillae of Watsonopsestis are connected to the fultura inferior (juxta) with a narrow, sclerotized band, while in Horipsestis, the transtillae and the juxta are unattached. The two genera have markedly different fultura inferiors: that of Watsonopsestis consists of a pair of unattached, broad-based, short, rounded-triangular lobes, whereas in Horipsestis it is comprised of a pair of basally fused, parallel, long and broad, tongue-shaped plates directed caudad. An additional typical character of Horipsestis is the antero-medially broadly depressed vinculum, which is evenly convex in Watsonopsestis. The short, tubular aedeagus, the shape of the carina and the presence of a spinulose cornuti field are homologous characters in the two genera, the only remarkable difference being the presence of a well-developed medial diverticulum of the vesica in Watsonopsestis. In the female genitalia, the most important distinctive character between the two genera is the considerably smaller, less sclerotized, calyculate ostium bursae and the markedly shorter and broader signum bursae of Watsonopsestis, compared to those of the Oriental genus. Compared to Marplena Lane, 1973, the other monotypic Afrotropical thyatirine genus, Watsonopsestis has a somewhat slimmer body, a slightly longer and terminally less dilated forewing with a gently arcuate costal margin (it is straight in Marplena) and a considerably lighter ground colour with a more brownish shade. The dorsal half of the forewing basal area is whitish with pale brownish suffusion in Watsonopsestis, while it is uniformly grey in Marplena. The new genus has a more strongly undulate antemedial line situated further from the wing base and a smaller orbicular and larger reniform stigma which are adjoined to each other, whereas the orbicular and reniform stigma are nearly identical in size and well separated in Marplena. The postmedial line is markedly more arched medially in Watsonopsestis and the subterminal line is weakly defined and interrupted, while it is sharply contrasting in Marplena. The subapical section of the costa bears a black, more or less semi-circular marking in the new genus which is absent in Marplena, while the apical streak is much shorter and thinner in Watsonopsestis. In the male genitalia, Watsonopsestis has a basally markedly narrower uncus, longer socii, a distally narrower, proximally wider tegumen, and a much shorter, apically more pointed and ventrally more dilated valva compared to Marplena. The transtilla of the new genus bears a rounded-triangular setose lobe which is absent in Marplena. The configuration of the fultura inferior (juxta) is similar in both genera consisting of two small unattached plates, but those of Watsonopsestis are broad-based and rounded-triangular, while they are elongate-quadrangular in Marplena. The aedeagus of the two genera are similar in shape, but it is slightly longer and straight, and the carina process is more pointed in the new genus than in Marplena. Additionally, the vesica of Watsonopsestis has a well-developed diverticulum medially, which is absent in Marplena. In the female genitalia, the main differences between Marplena and Watsonopsestis are expressed in the considerably narrower ostium bursae and the markedly larger, elongate signum bursae compared to the small, round signum of Marplena. Description External morphology of adult (Figs 5–8). Forewing length 16-17 mm. Antenna filiform, laterally flattened, typical of most Thyatirinae, dorsally covered by a thin layer of small white scales, chequered with dark brown in the basal quarter; scapus short but broad, covered in long, off-white scales with a narrow, black subbasal ring. Head relatively large, labial palp medium long and narrow, upcurved, dorso-laterally dark brown, ventrally off-white; medial segment ca. 5 times longer than basal and apical segment. Frons greyish-white with a dark brown band anteriorly, vertex pale ochreous-brown. Compound eye relatively large, globular, anteriorly bordered by a thin crista of long, dark brown hair-like scales. Collar pale ochreous sparsely scattered by dark brown scales; tegula bright white basally, gradually darkening towards tip, apex dark brown; both sides of thorax pale greyish-brown, abdomen greyish-white with a long, prominent dark brown dorsal hair-tuft on 3 rd segment. Forewing. Moderately elongate and narrow, costal and outer margin slightly arched, ventral margin almost straight, apex rounded. Basal and antemedial area greyish-white in dorsal, greyish-brown in ventral half without transverse lines. Antemedial line double, evenly arched, gently wavy. Medial line absent, inner half of median area dark brown, gradually lightened distally. Orbicular stigma contiguous to reniform stigma, former one half as large as latter. Postmedial line double, short costal section straight, then curved outwards in dorsal third, ventral two-thirds almost straight. Subterminal line very thin, interrupted, poorly visible, subterminal area with short black streaks on veins; terminal line thin, dark brown, scalloped between veins. Apical streak very thin and short, slightly curved, ending in vein M1. Cilia long, pale grey, chequered with narrow, dark grey patches. Hindwing. Costal and outer margin arcuate, anal margin almost straight; ground colour pale ochreous-grey in basal half, slightly darkening towards outer margin. Discal spot small, dash-like, diffuse; transverse lines absent, terminal line dark grey; cilia long, pale grey. Underside of wings uniformly pale grey, transverse lines undiscernible, subapical section of forewing costal margin pale greyish-white. Intraspecific variability limited. Sexual dimorphism negligible, expressed only by the somewhat longer and broader forewing of female. Male genitalia (Figs 20–21). Uncus digitiform, moderately long, narrow, apically rounded; socius as long as uncus, rather narrow with rounded apex, directed parallelly with uncus. Tegumen short, very broad dome-shaped anteriorly, narrow trapezoidal posteriorly. Vinculum short, broadly rounded. Valva short, broad at base, dorsal margin gently convex with narrow costal sclerotized band, basal half of ventral margin almost straight, medial section abruptly curved dorsad, distal half evenly concave, apex rounded-triangular. Sacculus very weakly sclerotized, without process. Transtilla well-developed, rounded triangular, lobe-like, distally densely covered in short setae, proximally connected to fultura inferior (juxta) with a narrow, sclerotized band. Fultura superior unmodified, very weakly sclerotized, broad ribbon-like. Fultura inferior consisting of two basally broad, short, rounded-triangular plates with setose apex. Aedeagus short, moderately thick, tubular, coecum long, almost half as long as entire aedeagus, apex rounded; carina short, slightly curved, claw-like. Vesica relatively long, basal part inflated, medial part with a semi-spherical diverticulum and an elongate finely spinulose area, distal section narrow tubular, slightly tapering. Female genitalia (Fig. 31). Papilla analis short and relatively narrow, rounded, posterior apophysis short and thin. Eighth tergite short and narrow, quadrangular; anterior apophysis thin, 2.5 times longer than posterior apophysis. Ostium bursae broad, V-shaped, caliciform; ductus bursae very short and narrow, lateral margins broadly sclerotized; cervix bursae membranous, unmodified, ductus seminalis moderately thick. Distal tubular part of corpus bursae long and relatively narrow, slightly dilated anteriorly; dilated proximal part of corpus bursae spherical, slightly rugose; signum bursae moderately long (ca. one-third of diameter of corpus bursae), anteriorly gradually dilated and rounded, elongate teardrop-shaped. Etymology The new genus is named in honour of the late Dr Allan Watson, a renowned specialist of Drepanidae and former curator of the Lepidoptera collections of NHMUK. He was the first to recognise and describe Thyatirid moths from the Afrotropical Region, introducing the genus Aethiopsestis. The desinence “- psestis ” has been widely used in thyatirine generic names., Published as part of László, Gyula M., 2022, Review of theAfrotropical Thyatirinae (Lepidoptera, Drepanidae) with description of a new genus and a new species, pp. 359-374 in Zootaxa 5124 (3) on pages 361-364, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.5124.3.5, http://zenodo.org/record/6411026, {"references":["Lane, M. nigrofascicula Graeser, 1888 Figs 11, 12 Asphalia Nigrofascicula Graeser, 1888, Berliner entomologische Zeitschrift 32: 152. Type locality: “Chab[arovsk].”. Present status: Neoploca arctipennis (Butler, 1878) or Neoploca arctipennis ssp. nigrofascicula (Graeser, 1888): Demopsestini. Taxonomic remarks: The taxon is better considered a continental geographic subspecies of the Japanese N. arctipennis (Butler, 1878) although to date it has been listed only as its synonym. Nomenclatural notes: A lectotype of Asphalia nigrofascicula Graeser, 1888, was designated by László & al. (2007: 284): this was a male specimen from NHML labeled “Ussuri. Dörr[ies]. Berlin ”. The authors added that “there are no authentic specimens of this taxon in Berlin while in the collection in St. Petersburg there is only a ♂ under the name ‘ nigrofascicula’ ”. The taxon was in fact described “…nur in zwei ♀♀ -Stücken, welche ich in Chab[arovsk]. aus … Puppen gezo- gen habe” (Graeser, 1888: 152). On this basis the male from BMNH cann’t be a syntype and thus cann’t be the lectotype of the taxon (Articles 74.2 and 74.1 of the Code). Only one female of those listed by L. Graeser is present in ZISP in fine condition, and is the only known original syntype of the taxon which is designated here lectotype of Asphalia nigrofascicula Graeser, 1888. It is a spread specimen in fine condition (coll. ZISP) supplied with the following labels: a greenish elongated rectangle with a narrow black frame and printed «Chabarofka» [now the city of Khabarovsk] and a white wider rectangle with narrow black frame and printed text «coll Dieckmann | (Graeser legit)». The specimen was designated with a red rectangular label with printed text “ Asphalia | nigrofascicula Graeser, | 1888 ♀ | design. Dubatolov et | Zolotuhin, 1994”. Although the specimen was selected as a lectotype in 1994 by V. Dubatolov and V. Zolotuhin, this was not published, and therefore it is officially designated only here by V. Mironov & V. Zolotuhin. The specimen is kept in ZISP in cabinet 217/drawer 20. The second syntype female mentioned by L. Graeser is not present here., Published as part of Mironov, Vladimir G. & Zolotuhin, Vadim V., 2019, Types of Thyatirinae (Lepidoptera: Drepanidae) in the collection of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, pp. 145-154 in Zootaxa 4615 (1) on page 149, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4615.1.7, http://zenodo.org/record/3995422, {"references":["Graeser, L. opalescens Alphéraky, 1897 Figs 21, 22 Thyatira Opalescens Alphéraky, 1897, Mémoires sur les lépidoptères 9: 135, pl. 9, fig. 7. Type locality: “dans une vallée nommée Tchin-Kiaïsituée au Nord de Tâ-tsien-loû”. Present status: Psidopala opalescens (Alphéraky, 1897). Nomenclatural notes: In the original description, the species was described based on “ ♂ ♀ ” collected on “ 15 Juillet 1893 ”. Two specimens have been found in ZISP but both are females (cabinet 217/drawer 6). One of them was designated a lectotype by László & al. (2007: 178) as Psidopala opalesens Alph. The second female is supplied with an additional red rectangular label: « Paralectotype ♀ | Thyatira opalescens | Alphéraky, 1897 | Design. V.G. Mironov | et V. V. Zolotuhin, 2019”. Only two females are present and no male. It is possible that S. Alphéraky had wrongly interpreted gender in one specimen or that the type series included more than these 2 specimens., Published as part of Mironov, Vladimir G. & Zolotuhin, Vadim V., 2019, Types of Thyatirinae (Lepidoptera: Drepanidae) in the collection of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, pp. 145-154 in Zootaxa 4615 (1) on pages 149-150, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4615.1.7, http://zenodo.org/record/3995422, {"references":["Alpheraky, S. hedemanni Christoph, 1885 Figs 5, 6 Thyatira Hedemanni Christoph, 1885, Mémoires sur les Lépidoptères 2: 24, pl. 2, fig. 3. Type locality: [Georgia] ”de Lagodekhi… à Helenendorf et Koussari” [Lagodekhi after the lectotype]. Present status: Thyatira hedemanni Christoph, 1885: Thyatirini. Taxonomic remarks: Can be confused in nature with a dark montane form phaea Dannehl, 1926, of Thyatira batis (Linnaeus, 1758) which has shorter and wider fore wings. Nomenclatural notes: The specimens were collected by L. Mlokossewitsch (who was a forester in Lagodekhi) “en grande quantité de Lagodekhi … en Mai, Juin et Août”, and several specimens were attracted to a lamp “à Helenendorf et Koussari” by H. Leder. All of them should therefore be considered original syntypes of Thyatira hedemanni Christoph, 1885. Of these, only 6 are found in ZISP; it is known that part of H. Christoph’s collection had been sold, exchanged or presented by himself to different European collections. The most famous among them are the Museums of Germany (ZMHU in Berlin) and of England (NHML). A specimen from Lagodekhi in the coll. of NHML was designated lectotype of Thyatira hedemanni Christoph, 1885, by László & al. (2007: 46). This was a male apparently hatched on 21[.]12[.][18]85: this date is later than the date of publication of the corresponding volume of Mémoires sur les Lépidoptères (Band 2) in which the taxon description was published. From the dates, this specimen cannot be part of the original type series and therefore this designation is invalid. We are therefore correcting the situation under articles 74.2 and 74.1 of the Code by designating the lectotype of the taxon here. We choose a specimen in fine condition (coll. ZISP: cabinet 217/drawer 5) which is supplied with the following labels: a small blue circle without any inscription, a small quadrat (so called a Christoph’s label) with wide black frame and Christoph’s inscription in black ink « ♂ | Lagod.» and«22 6 80 | Mlok» on the reverse, and a white rectangle with a printed text «Колл. Вел. Кн. | НиколаЯ | Михайловича» [“Collection of the Grand Duke Nikolay Mikhailovich”]. The specimen is actually a female (tip of ovipositor is visible, and it bears two dried eggs) although Christoph treated it as a male, and is supplied with a red lectotype label and corresponding text: “ Lectotypus ♀ ” and inscription: “ Thyatira | hedemanni Chr. | Design. V.G. Mironov | et V. V. Zolotuhin, 2019”. Another 5 syntypes (3♂♂ and 2♀♀ from Lagodekhi) kept in the same cabinet drawer 6 are designated paralecto- types of the taxon. They all have the same kind of labels and were collected on 4.6.79, 14.4.79, 10.7.82 (♂♂) and 7.5.80 and 22.5.80 (♀♀) according to the inscriptions on the reverses of the labels., Published as part of Mironov, Vladimir G. & Zolotuhin, Vadim V., 2019, Types of Thyatirinae (Lepidoptera: Drepanidae) in the collection of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, pp. 145-154 in Zootaxa 4615 (1) on page 147, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4615.1.7, http://zenodo.org/record/3995422, {"references":["Christoph, H. violacea Fixsen, 1887 Figs 17, 18 Thyatira Violacea Fixsen, 1887, Mémoires sur les lépidoptères 3: 352, pl. 15, fig. 11. Type locality: [Korea]. In Laszlo & al. (2007: 202) “Pung Tun a ” [misspelling of Pung Tung] was fixed as the type locality for the species after designation of the lectotype. According to Fixsen (1887: 243), Pung Tung was a small village with ca. 12–15 huts situated in a tight river valley 102 English miles NE from Seoul and 129 NE from Chemulpoo at an altitude of about 1700 ft a.s.l. (fig. 23). Present status: Cymatochrocis violacea (Fixsen, 1887): Habrosynini. Taxonomic remarks: Traditionally has been considered a member of the genus Habrosyne s. lat.; Cymatochrocis is thus its subgenus or a separate genus. We follow the second point of view. Nomenclatural notes: The type series was collected in the period from 10 to 18 August [1884]; the number of syntypes was not specified. 5 specimens in ZISP originate from O. Herz’s material collected by him from Pung- Tung, but only 2 of them (♂♂: cabinet 217/drawer 6) correspond to the period given in the original description. A male specimen which was designated a lectotype by our colleagues (László & al. 2007: 202) was collected on 18 August 1884 and bears the following labels: a white off quadrat with wide black frame and inscription with black ink “ ♂ | Pung | Tung” and on thereverse “18/6 8. 84 | Herz”, a white rectangle with printed «Колл. Вел. Кн. | НиколаЯ | Михайловича», red (black framed) quadrat with the printed text “ LECTOTYPUS | Thyatira violacea | Fixsen, 1887 | Designated by Gy. M. | László, G. Ronkay and | L. Ronkay, 2001”, a red rectangle “ SYNTYPUS ♂ | Habrosyne | violaceae [sic!] Fixsen”, a narrow blue rectangle with printed “ex coll. | Zool. Inst. Acad. Sci. | St.Petersburg, Russia ”, a wide white rectangle with narrow black frame and printed text “ Habrosyne | violacea | (Fixsen, 1887) | det. Gy. M. László & G. | Ronkay, 2001”, and white rectangle with printed “gen. prep. No. | LG 1667 M”. Another male labeled “10. 8. 84 | 29. 7. Herz” from the collection of the Grand Duke Nikolay Mikhailovich should be considered a paralectotype of the species. Further topotypes originated from the same series but were collected on “27. 7. 84 | 15 Herz | Coll. Alph. ” (♂); “7. 8. 84 | 20. 7. | Herz” (♂); “ Coll. Alph. | 5. 8. 84 | Herz” (♀). These dates do not correspond to the original de- scription and these specimens thus must be excluded from the syntype series; two of them arrived in ZISP at a later date with the S. Alphéraky collection. Two further specimens were designated with red labels by Gy.M. László, G. Ronkay and L. Ronkay in 2001 as paralectotypes and syntypes of the taxon. The female is labeled: “ Korea ” and “к. Ершова” [Erschoff’s collection] and the male: “ Korea | Jankowsky” and «Колл. Вел. Кн. | НиколаЯ | Михайловича»; neither has any connection with Fixsen’s type series and both must be also excluded from the original syntype series., Published as part of Mironov, Vladimir G. & Zolotuhin, Vadim V., 2019, Types of Thyatirinae (Lepidoptera: Drepanidae) in the collection of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, pp. 145-154 in Zootaxa 4615 (1) on pages 152-153, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4615.1.7, http://zenodo.org/record/3995422, {"references":["Fixsen, C. The subfamily Cyclidiinae from China is reviewed: two genera and seven species are reported from China. One new subspecies, Cyclidia fractifasciata indistincta subsp. n., is described. Two new synonyms are established: Cyclidia substigmaria (Hübner, 1831) (= Cyclidia substigmaria brunna Chu & Wang, 1987, syn. n. = Cyclidia tetraspota Chu & Wang, 1987, syn. n.). One misidentification in Chu & Wang (1987) is corrected. Identification keys and diagnoses for all discussed Chinese species are provided. External features and genitalia are depicted. In addition, results of DNA barcoding for five taxa of Cyclidia are briefly discussed.

VII. 2015, alt. 2,680 m, Weixi, Yunnan, China, leg. Qitong Huang, slide No. SCAU- Thy 044, DNA material No. B 008, genBank accession numbers: KY974320. Diagnosis. Forewing with darker black ground color with sporadical white patterns, postmedial line indistinct, conspicuous black dots on veins arranged into crosslines. Description. Male and female adults: Small-sized, wingspan 38–39 mm, length of forewing 16–17 mm. Head hairy, eyes large and naked, frons with white hairy tuft, palpi, collar and metathorax all with white-black hairs. Antenna lamellate, brown, white-black scales at lateral. Abdomen slender, dark, covered with short hairs. Forewing relatively short and broad, usually black ground color with sporadical white patterns, less apex pointed, outer margin evenly arcuate with white-black scales. Forewings without obvious partition, just indistinctly pale postmedial band, costa with some white patterns in order, reniform spot and orbicular spot reduce. Antemedial area with clear white pattern. Hindwings pale-white, pale scales mainly in the outside, inside with white scales. These external characteristics are also appropriate for female. Male genitalia: Uncus short, apically round. Socii long with a fine terminal hook, and far from the base of uncus. Tegumen broad and well-developed. Fultura superior belt-shaped, light sclerotized, broader at the lower part. Valva relatively broad, with almost parallel margins, cucullus with apically round, smooth, saccular part sclerotized and with spinulate extensions. Fultura inferior arch. Aedeagus medium-long, simple, carina with a hook, cornuti field easily removable and consisted of fine cornuti. Female genitalia: The whole of female genitalia is simple, typical thyatirid-like. Papillae anales sclerotized, simple, with long apophyses posteriors. Eighth abdominal segment sclerotized with longer apophyses anteriores. Ostium bursae with two symmetrical sclerotized plates. Ostial part, ductus bursae and corpus bursae membranous, signum single, long bar-shaped. Distribution. China (Yunnan). Etymology. The specific epithet is derived from Naxi referring to the minority ethnic groups living in the northwest of Yunnan and the southwest of Sichuan. Remarks. The genitalia of the genus Parapsestis are generally difficult to identify one from the other, especially in the P. argenteopicta species-group. However, they are easily distinguishable from each other in the pattern of forewings. Although this new species seemed to be P. argenteopicta or P. dabashana when it was first examined. The new species is very similar to P. argenteopicta in appearance, but differs from the latter as follows: valva broader, sacculus more widely expanded, cucullus more sharply pointed, carinal hook of aedeagus slightly curved, and ostium bursae of female genitalia with larger ventro-lateral plates on both sides. On the other hand, compared with P. dabashana, the new species has blacker forewings and obscure white spots on veins, broader valva, especially on the terminal of valva broader than P. dabashana. We also extracted DNA bar codes (CO1) of P. naxii sp. n. and P. argenteopicta, within the two species Kimura two parameter (K2P) distances and P-distance were 5.0% and 4.80% respectively. Lacking fresh specimen of P. dabashana, it is difficult to provide relatively well-trusted DNA evidence, so in this paper we tentatively describe these darker specimens as new species based on morphological characteristics in above text.

Stenopsestis bruna Jiang, Yang, Xue & Han, 2015, Zootaxa, 3941 (1): 3536, Figs 7, 19, 28, 35. Material examined. 1 male, 12. VII. 2013, alt. 2,670 m, Weixi, Yunnan, leg. Hailing Zhuang, slide No. SCAU- Thy015. 2 males, 0 7. VII. 2009, Shenglongjia, Hubei, leg. Yu Wang, slide No. SCAU-Thy016, slide No. SCAU- Thy017. 1 female, 13. VII. 2015, alt. 2,680 m, Weixi, Yunnan, leg. Min Wang, slide No. SCAU-Thy018. Distribution. China (Sichuan, Yunnan, Hunan, Hubei). Remarks. Jiang et al. (2015) reported a new species, S. bruna from Hubei and Hunan province, China (Figs 87, 91, 92), while Zhuang et al. (2014) described a new species T. sichuanensis from Sichuan province, China. After careful comparison of these two taxa, we reached the conclusion that S. bruna is a synonym of T. sichuanensis Zhuang, Owada & Wang, 2014 (Figs 13, 55, 85, 86, 88, 89, 90, 93), based on the following reasons: 1) Although the two taxa were collected from different locations, these locations are very close in proximity to each other (Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces), and they have very similar appearance and genitalia, 2) The uncus of S. bruna illustrated by Jiang et al. (2015) had most likely been lost in dissecting and mounting, so Jiang et al. assigned this species not to Toxoides Hampson, [1893] but Stenopsestis Yoshimoto, 1984. In addition, this species is newly recorded for Yunnan, China., Published as part of Zhuang, Hailing, Yago, Masaya, Owada, Mamoru & Wang, Min, 2017, Taxonomic review of the moth family Thyatiridae (Lepidoptera) from Yunnan province, China, pp. 451-477 in Zootaxa 4306 (4) on page 456, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4306.4.1, http://zenodo.org/record/845075, {"references":["Jiang, N., Yang, C., Xue, D. & Hang, H.
