1. A cytosystematic study of the Dianthus virgineus complex (Caryophyllaceae) in the Central Mediterranean.

Abstract: European wild carnations (Dianthus) are represented by a high number of taxa organized in unresolved taxonomies. In particular, taxa belonging to the Dianthus virgineus L. complex in the Central Mediterranean have been delimited mainly with qualitative morphological data and still await quantitative investigations, which are vital to understand boundaries and relations among plant diversity groups. Here, we examine the phenotypic features of nuclear genome organization testing for species boundaries in this complex. We have studied the chromosome number, the total haploid length (THL), and the relative genome size (RGS) in 122 populations belonging to 25 out of 33 taxa of the complex. All the studied populations have 2n = 2x = 30 chromosomes, and the THL ranges from 14.09 to 20.71 μm. Genome size estimations support the absence of polyploidization events, but show a certain degree of variation (0.318–0.423 arbitrary units). The RGS variation is not in agreement with current taxonomic treatment, but rather shows a geographical pattern, with higher values in Sicily and Sardinia. No correlation between the THL and the RGS was detected, possibly due to the stable chromosome number and the small size of chromosomes. 2. Herbarium Apenninicum (APP): An Archive of Vascular Plants from Central Italy.

Abstract: The Herbarium Apenninicum (international code: APP), hosted in the Floristic Research Center of the Apennines (Abruzzo, central Italy), is approximately composed of about 80,000 specimens of vascular plants; 66,352 of them are mounted with data labels and entered in a database. The specimens from the Abruzzo administrative region (central Italy) correspond to more than half of the collection (57.8% of the specimens), while immediately afterwards, other neighboring provinces of central Italy follow. Outside of Italy, the most represented areas are Morocco and southern European countries. Most of the specimens were collected between 2001 and 2020; nevertheless, the herbarium also contains two historical collections from the end of the nineteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century. Abstract: The new subspecies Pedicularis rostratospicata subsp. marsica is here described based on morphological and molecular analyses. The new taxon is endemic to few localities of the Central Apennines within the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park (Central Italy). Pedicularis rostratospicata subsp. marsica can be distinguished from the other two currently accepted subspecies (subsp. rostratospicata and subsp. helvetica) by their taller stems, shorter petioles of basal and middle leaves, narrower blades of basal leaves, longer inflorescences with longer internodes and more flowers, and longer calyx lobes. Molecular analysis confirmed the autonomy of the new taxon. Furthermore, the conservation status assessment of the new subspecies according to IUCN categories and criteria is proposed and discussed, and an analytical key to the three subspecies of P. rostratospicata is presented. 7. Taxonomy and Distribution of Spiraea hypericifolia in Italy and Typification of the Name S. flabellata (Rosaceae).

Abstract: Spiraea hypericifolia is a Eurasiatic species, distributed from SW Europe to C and SW Asia. In Italy, only the alien S. hypericifolia subsp. obovata was recorded, as naturalized in the Central Apennines. Spiraea flabellata was described from Abruzzo (Central Apennines, Italy) by Gussone in 1826 and is currently regarded as a synonym of S. hypericifolia subsp. obovata. Based on the study of living plants from locus classicus and the analysis of the original material traced in BOLO and NAP, S. flabellata should be referred instead to S. hypericifolia subsp. hypericifolia, a taxon reported here for the first time in Italy. The name S. flabellata is lectotypified with a specimen kept in NAP. Based on our study, S. hypericifolia subsp. obovata should be excluded from Italian flora. Spiraea hypericifolia subsp. hypericifolia should be considered native to Italy and added to the contingent of steppe plants of phytogeographic and conservation interest recorded in the Central Apennines. Abstract: Simple Summary: Adonis sect. Adonanthe is characterized by species with strongly gibbous abaxial side of achenes, reticulate-venation on its surface, with short and recurved style and includes four series: ser. Amurenses, ser. Coeruleae, ser. Apenninae, ser. Vernales. In the Euro-Mediterranean area three species belonging to A. sect. Adonanthe are currently recognized: A. apennina (ser. Apenninae), A. volgensis (incl. A. transsilvanica; ser. Vernales), A. vernalis (ser. Vernales). In 2021 was discovered in the Central Apennines (Italy) a yellow-flowered Adonis population belonging to sect. Adonanthe similar to A. volgensis. Following an integrated taxonomic approach, we have shown that the newly discovered population should be regarded as a new species, named A. fucensis, endemic to Abruzzo (Central Apennines, Italy). Adonis fucensis is herein described as a new species based on morphological and molecular analyses. It is endemic to one locality of the Central Apennines between Amplero and Fucino plains within the NATURA 2000 network in the SAC IT7110205 (Central Italy). The only discovered population is composed of 65 individuals and is at risk of extinction. The conservation status assessment according to IUCN categories and criteria is proposed and discussed. The new species belongs to A. sect. Adonanthe and is morphologically similar to A. volgensis (incl. A. transsilvanica), a species distributed in Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey as well as eastward to SW Siberia and Central Asia. Adonis fucensis can be distinguished from A. volgensis by larger cauline leaves, pentagonal with lobes lanceolate, larger stipules with more lobes and teeth, and larger flowers. Abstract: Ranuculus gracilis is endemic to the SE Euro-Mediterranean area and its presence in Italy is controversial. Based on analysis of the relevant literature, field surveys and examination of herbarium specimens, a revised distribution of this species in Italy is presented and its conservation status is assessed. Ranunculus agerii, described by Antonio Bertoloni from Bologna (Emilia-Romagna, Northern Italy), and R. schowii, described by Vincenzo Tineo from Vittoria and Terranova (Sicily), usually regarded as synonyms of R. gracilis, are here lectotypified and their taxonomic status discussed. Abstract: Senecio squalidus (Asteraceae) currently includes nine subspecies distributed in North and Central Europe and in the Mediterranean basin. Within this taxonomic aggregate, many species have been described, but research on their nomenclatural types is incomplete. A complete nomenclatural survey of 19 names belonging to this taxonomically critical group was carried out. Fourteen lectotypes are here designated. The nomenclatural analysis, complemented by field investigations in the type localities of the taxa described in the Central Mediterranean, allowed us to accept 10 species. In Italy it was recorded by mistake (Bartolucci et al. 2018, 2020).

13. A taxonomic revision of the Siler montanum group (Apiaceae) in Italy and the Balkan Peninsula.

Abstract: A morphometric-based taxonomic revision of the Siler montanum group (Apiaceae) from Italy and the Balkan Peninsula was carried out. Multivariate and univariate analyses were performed on 47 morphological characters including seven ratios, and based on the study of 328 dried herbarium specimens. According to our results, the characters employed in the study revealed their suitability as key characters for the examined taxa. A taxonomic treatment was presented and a new diagnostic key to the S. montanum group is also provided for Italy and Balkan Peninsula. Ten taxa were recognized within the group, and among them three new subspecies were described: S. montanum subsp. apuanum, S. montanum subsp. corrasianum and S. montanum subsp. ogliastrinum. Furthermore, three new combinations were proposed: S. zernyi subsp. laeve, S. zernyi subsp. ochridanum and S. montanum subsp. stabianum. Six names were lectotypified: Laserpitium garganicum var. balcanicum, L. garganicum var. laeve, L. garganicum var. scabrum, L. siculum var. stabianum, L. siler var. ovalifolium and Ligusticum garganicum. Occurrences were confirmed for Siler zernyi subsp. zernyi in Greece and S. zernyi subsp. laeve in North Macedonia. Occurrences were excluded for S. montanum subsp. garganicum in Greece and North Macedonia and S. montanum subsp. siculum in C and S Italy. Abstract: A new species of Anthyllis endemic to central Apennine growing in dry pastures on limestone in the montane belt, within Abruzzo and Lazio administrative regions (central Italy), is here described and illustrated and the IUCN assessment is proposed. This new species belongs to the morphologically very variable Anthyllis vulneraria species complex and it is close to A. pulchella (south-eastern Europe and Caucasus), but it can be clearly distinguished by its smaller flowers, mainly light yellow-coloured, bracts longer than flowers, calyx pink-coloured (usually only at apex) and size of cauline leaves and leaflets. Abstract: A morphometric study on Senecio apenninus and S. doronicum subsp. orientalis belonging to S. sect. Crociseris was carried out with univariate and multivariate analyses. In order to correctly classify these taxa and clarify the taxonomic value of S. apenninus, we studied 38 qualitative and quantitative morphometric characters from 85 herbarium specimens. The results of our analyses allow the recognition of two clearly distinct and separate taxa, distinguished by number and diameter of their capitula, the ratio of involucral bracts and supplementary bracts and length of supplementary bracts. Abstract: A morphometric study of populations from the central-southern Apennines and Sicily of the Italian endemic Corydalis densiflora has been undertaken, based on herbarium specimens and field research. A new subspecies, C. densiflora subsp. apennina, is described from the central Apennines. It differs from C. densiflora s.str. by its more divided leaves and bracts, basal leaf with more numerous and narrower leaflets, longer middle and lateral lobes of middle and upper bracts, narrower lower petal wing, shorter inner petals and shorter upper stamen. Abstract: The inventory of the taxa collected during the annual field trip of the working group for Floristics, Systematics and Evolution of the Italian Botanical Society is reported. The field trip was held in 2016 along the Velino and Aterno valleys located between Lazio and Abruzzo administrative regions (central Italy). The flora documented for the studied area amounts to 629 specific and subspecific taxa (including two hybrids) belonging to 300 genera and 69 families. Thirty-eight taxa are endemic to Italy, and only 16 alien taxa were detected. Thirty-eight taxa are included in the IUCN Red List of the Italian Flora. Twenty-four taxa have to be considered as floristic novelties because either new or confirmed for the regional flora of Lazio or Abruzzo. In particular, 15 taxa are new and 6 are confirmed for Lazio. Regarding Abruzzo, 2 taxa are new for the regional flora and one is confirmed. Furthermore, the alien status in Lazio has been updated for one taxon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Iconography. �� MOGGRIDGE (1864: plate XXV, sub F. delphinensis Gren.?) published a plate which illustrates specimens gathered ��from a mountain not far from Giandola in the Sospello valley�� (Fig. 3). In the protologue, PLANCHON (1873) quoted, for this taxon, several type localities (gatherings in Herb. Thuret, G-BU) from the Maritime Alps and also the Moggridge's iconography cited above, which is consequently original material for the name. Moreover, we traced in G-BU, MPU and FI specimens, from the cited localities, that completely fit with the protologue and then can be considered as original material too (syntypes). Among these, only one specimen, conserved in G-BU, is labelled as F. delphinensis �� moggridgei [manu Planch.] (January, 1873). The complete individual on the left is chosen as the lectotype. Taxonomic discussion. �� This taxon was treated, in the past, in different ways: as a subspecies (i.e., RIX, 1978), a variety (i.e., FIORI, 1923; PIGNATTI, 1982) or fully synonymic (i.e., AESCHIMANN & al., 2004) with F. tubiformis. The study of the selected lectotype and of the other available original material clearly shows that this taxon is closer to F. tubiformis than to any other European species. However, the two seem to be very distinct for many character-states. Our preliminary results confirm this view. Nowadays, there is some doubt about the relations between F. tubiformis subsp. moggridgei and F. collina Adam (= F. lutea M. Bieb.). (K! sub F. allionii Planch. ined.). In the protologue, PLANCHON (1873) quotes several type localities in the Maritime Alps and only two collections (29.VI.1861, Borgeau 346 in Herb. Thuret and 30.VI. 1872, Burnat s.n. in Herb. Thuret). We traced in G-BU, K, MPU and FI specimens, from the cited localities, that can be considered as original material (syntypes). Among these, there is one in G-BU, which is labelled as F. delphinensis var. burnatii manu Planch. (January, 1873). The complete individual on the right is chosen as the lectotype. Taxonomic discussion. �� Fritillaria meleagris subsp. burnatii has long been confused with other close taxa (in herbaria checked by us: F. meleagris L., F. involucrata All. and F. delphinensis or fully synonymized with F. tubiformis, mostly by Italian botanists (i.e., FIORI, 1923; ZANGHERI, 1976; PIGNATTI, 1982). After study of the selected lectotype and of the other available original material we are convinced that F. meleagris subsp. burnatii is an independent taxon actually closer to F. meleagris than to F. tubiformis. This hypothesis agrees with RIX (1978) in considering this unit as a subspecies of F. meleagris. Anyway, further studies aimed at clarifying the taxonomic value, the systematic status and the actual distribution of this taxon are in progress. Specimen visum. �� FRANCE. GRENIER & GODRON (1855) quote several syntypes for this taxon. From the localities cited in the protologue, we traced, in P and K, specimens that can be considered as original material. Among these we choose the most well-developed and well-presented as lectotype. Taxonomic discussion. �� Fritillaria tubiformis was long confused with F. meleagris L. (i.e., BERTOLONI, 1839), but it is clearly distinct from all other species from West Europe RENIER & GODRON, 1855). On the other hand, it seems close to F. latifolia Willd., widespread from Caucasus to N Turkey IX, 2001), from which it differs in having glaucous leaves (vs. shiny green) and shorter style branches. Among the taxa usually synonymized with F. tubiformis, two seem to deserve special attention (F. delphinensis var. burnatii Planch. and F. delphinensis f. moggridgei Planch.), while others have doubtful taxonomic value (i.e., F. delphinensis var. reverchonii Rouy; ROUY, 1910). Similarly to what was done recently with the F. montana W. D. J. Abstract: The inventory of the taxa collected during the annual field trip of the working group for Floristics, Systematics and Evolution of the Italian Botanical Society is reported. It was held in 2013 along the Maddalena Mountains, a mountain ridge of the southern Apennines located between the Basilicata and Campania administrative regions (southern Italy), considered as being poorly characterized in terms of vascular flora. A total of 701 units belonging to 74 plant families were recorded including two varieties and four hybrids. Thirty-five taxa resulted endemic to Italy and only 11 alien species were detected, while 36 taxa are new or confirmed for the regional floras of Basilicata and/or Campania. In particular, 12 taxa are new for Basilicata, while four are confirmed. Regarding Campania, 14 taxa resulted new for the regional flora and five were confirmed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In this paper, Allium ducissae (the LSID for the name Allium ducissae is: 77254606-1) is described as a new species based on morphological and molecular analyses, and its taxonomic relationships are discussed. It grows in crevices on calcareous rocks, rocky slopes and grassy ledges in the subalpine belt, within two regional protected areas in the Lazio and Abruzzo administrative regions (Central Apennines, Italy). Previously, these populations were attributed to A. strictum, a species described from Siberia, belonging to A. sect. Reticulatobulbosa. The new species is distinct from A. strictum in the morphology of vegetative and reproductive structures. Indeed, it is close to A. palentinum, an endemic species to Cantabrian Mountains (NW Spain). Both molecular and morphological data support the recognition of the Allium populations coming from the Central Apennines as a new species. Allium ducissae can be clearly distinguished from A. palentinum by longer and wider tepals, longer filaments, tooth of inner filament, flower pedicels, spathe appendage, and smaller seeds. Moreover, seed testa micro-sculptures revealed slight differences between A. ducissae and A. palentinum. Chromosome counts showed that A. ducissae is diploid with 2n = 16 chromosomes, as already known for A. palentinum. Molecular analyses support the affiliation of A. ducissae and A. palentinum to A. sect. Falcatifolia, contrary to what is known for the latter species, usually included in A. sect. Daghestanica. Abstract: Gagea tisoniana Peruzzi et al. sp. nov. is described and its taxonomic relationship is discussed. The new species, which appears to be endemic to central Italy, is close to G. pratensis (Pers.) Dumort., G. pusilla (F. W. Schmidt) Sweet, and other mainly poorly known [i.e. G. succedanea Griseb. et Schenk, G. transversalis Stev., and G. paczoskii (Zapal.) Grossh.] or as yet undescribed taxa from eastern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean area. The recognition of the new taxon G. tisoniana is claimed on the basis of anatomical, karyological, ecological, and phytogeographical data. Maps of the Italian distribution of G. pratensis (2 n = 60), G. pusilla (2 n = 24), and G. tisoniana (2 n = 24) are presented, together with an analytical identification key. Abstract: A new species, Oxytropis ocrensis, is described from Central Apennines (Italy). This species is morphologically closely related to O. halleri group (O. xerophila, O. halleri and O. korabensis) occurring in the Alps and Albania, from which it differs by longer calyx, larger lateral calyx teeth, long hairs on calyx teeth, smaller keel limb and larger diameter of stem under the inflorescence. The taxonomic relationships of the new species with the hitherto known species of O. halleri group are examined and discussed.
