We present in this work a first assessment of the imaging and topographic mapping capabilities of the InSAeS4 system, which is a single-pass interferometric airborne X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). In particular, we first provide a brief description of the InSAeS4 sensor. Then, we discuss the results of our analysis on the SAR and interferometric SAR products relevant to the first flight-test campaign. More specifically, we have exploited as reference the GPS measurements relevant to nine Corner Reflectors (CRs) deployed over the illuminated area during the campaign and a laser scanner Digital Elevation Model (DEM). From the analysis carried out on the CRs we achieved a mean geometric resolution, for the SAR products, of about 0.14 m in azimuth and 0.49 m in range, a positioning misalignment with standard deviation of 0.07 m in range and 0.08 m in azimuth, and a height error with standard deviation of 0.51 m. From the comparison with the laser scanner DEM we estimated a height error with standard deviation of 1.57 m. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With reference to the application to the imaging and monitoring of infrastructures and buildings in urban areas, SAR tomography has been mainly developed and tested at full resolution. In this work, we investigate the possibility related to the use of a multilook approach for fine resolution analysis of ground structures that combines SAR tomography and a method, CAESAR, recently proposed for classical DInSAR analysis at coarse resolution over large areas. Shown results, achieved by processing two 3 m spatial resolution (stripmap mode) COSMO-SKYMED datasets relative to the urban areas of Naples and Rome (Italy), clearly indicate that the proposed multilook-based method allows achieving an impressive density of detected scatterers over buildings and infrastructures, much higher than those achievable with standard full-resolution methods. Multidimensional synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging is a technique based on coherent SAR data combination for space (full 3-D) and space/deformation-velocity (4-D) analysis. It extends SAR interferometry and differential interferometry concepts, offering new options for the analysis and monitoring of ground scenes. In this paper, we consider the problem of detecting scatterers showing partial correlation properties induced by simultaneous acquisitions from satellite formations or an uneven temporal distribution of satellite constellations. To this end, we first provide a general model for the pixel imaged by a multidimensional SAR system. Then, we design a constant false alarm rate (CFAR) decision rule accounting for the presence of partially coherent scatterers. At the analysis stage, we assess the performance of the new detector also in comparison with a previously proposed CFAR scheme, developed in the context of SAR tomography for fully coherent scatterers. Airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) raw data are affected by motion errors. These are commonly accounted for via standard two-step motion compensation (MOCO) algorithm followed by the Precise Topography- and Aperture-dependent (PTA) procedure proposed some years ago. The Component extrAction and sElection SAR (CAESAR) is a method for the selection and filtering of scattering mechanisms recently proposed in the multibaseline interferometric SAR framework. Its strength is related to the possibility to select and extract multiple dominant scattering mechanisms, even interfering in the same pixel, since the stage of the interferograms generation, and to carry out a decorrelation noise phase filtering. Up to now, the validation of CAESAR has been addressed in the framework of SAR Tomography for the model-based detection of Persistent Scatterers (PSs). In this paper we investigate the effectiveness related to the use of CAESAR eigen-interferograms in classical multi-baseline DInSAR processing, based on the Small BAseline Subset (SBAS) strategy, typically adopted to extract large scale distributed deformation and atmospheric phase screen. Such components are also exploited for the calibration of the full resolution data for PS or tomographic analysis. By using COSMO-SKyMed (CSK) SAR data, it is demonstrated that dominant scattering component filtering effectively improves the monitoring of distributed spatially decorrelated areas (f.i. bare soil, rocks, etc.) and allows bringing to light man-made structures with dominant backscattering characteristics embedded in highly temporally decorrelated scenario, as isolated asphalt roads and block of buildings in non-urban areas. Moreover it is shown that, thanks to the CAESAR multiple scattering components separation, the layover mitigation in low-topography eigen-interferograms relieves Phase Unwrapping (PhU) errors in urban areas due to abrupt height variations.
