Optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) remote sensing has a long history of use and reached a good level of maturity in archaeological and cultural heritage applications, yet further advances are viable through the exploitation of novel sensor data and imaging modes, big data and high-performance computing, advanced and automated analysis methods. This paper showcases the main research avenues in this field, with a focus on archaeological prospection and heritage site protection. Six demonstration use-cases with a wealth of heritage asset types (e.g. excavated and still buried archaeological features, standing monuments, natural reserves, burial mounds, paleo-channels) and respective scientific research objectives are presented: the Ostia-Portus area and the wider Province of Rome (Italy), the city of Wuhan and the Jiuzhaigou National Park (China), and the Siberian "Valley of the Kings" (Russia). Input data encompass both archive and newly tasked medium to very high-resolution imagery acquired over the last decade from satellite (e.g. Copernicus Sentinels and ESA Third Party Missions) and aerial (e.g. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, UAV) platforms, as well as field-based evidence and ground truth, auxiliary topographic data, Digital Elevation Models (DEM), and monitoring data from geodetic campaigns and networks. The novel results achieved for the use-cases contribute to the discussion on the advantages and limitations of optical and SAR-based archaeological and heritage applications aimed to detect buried and sub-surface archaeological assets across rural and semi-vegetated landscapes, identify threats to cultural heritage assets due to ground instability and urban development in large metropolises, and monitor post-disaster impacts in natural reserves. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) 3-D imaging technique can eliminate severe layover and geometric distortions in 2-D images, which greatly facilitates target recognition and 3-D modeling. However, due to the strong anistropic scattering properties of man-made targets, it's hard to obtain high-resolution 3-D images by conventional SAR imaging methods. Multi-aspect aperture synthesis is an advanced SAR imaging mode, which is used to obtain the multi-aspect anisotropic scattering information as well as the 3-D structures of the observed targets. We demonstrate that this technology greatly facilitates the 3-D SAR imaging of complex-structured targets. In this article, we introduce several recent works of our research group on 3-D radar imaging based on multi-aspect aperture synthesis techniques. Main topics include multi-aspect SAR 3-D imaging modes, spatial resolution theory, an object-level 3D reconstruction method with single-channel single-pass SAR data, theory of holographic SAR tomography imaging technology and a corresponding 3D inversion method, and an interferometric circular SAR 3D reconstruction method with its experimental results on the FAST radio telescope data. We analyze the advantages and existing scientific problems for each proposed technical path in detail, aiming to provide new solutions for SAR 3D imaging/inversion problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An increasing interest in the use of low frequency Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems, e.g., L- and P-bands, makes the research of the ionospheric effects on SAR interferograms become urgent and significant. As the most pronounced signature in interferograms, the ionosphere-induced azimuth streak was thoroughly investigated in this study through processing of the 19 L-band Advanced Land-Observing Satellite (ALOS) Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR)images over the Chongqing City, China. The investigations show that the visible ionosphere-induced stripe-shape azimuth shifts with the invariable direction of 26°E, 113°N are observed in some interferometric pairs. Relating these anomalous azimuth shifts to the International GNSS Service (IGS) final ionospheric products shows that the detected ionosphere-contaminated SAR images display the relatively large ionospheric variation with time during SAR satellite travelled through the study area, indicating a somewhat correlation between them. After detecting the ionosphere-contaminated interferograms, we estimated the Ionospheric Phase Streak (IPS) based on an approximate linear relationship between IPS and azimuth shift, and then removed them from the original interferograms. The corrected results show that ionospheric phase patterns are largely removed from the ionosphere-contaminated interferograms. The investigation indicates that the direction of the IPS keeps approximately constant in space and time, which provides the potential chance to develop methods to correct the ionospheric effect. Furthermore, this study once more proves that the ionospheric effect on SAR interferogram can be detected, estimated and corrected from azimuth shifts.

A flood event induced by heavy rainfall hit the Taiyuan basin in north China in early October of 2021. In this study, we map the flood event process using the multitemporal synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired by Sentinel-1. First, we develop a spatiotemporal filter based on low-rank tensor approximation (STF-LRTA) for removing the speckle noise in SAR images. Next, we employ the classic log-ratio change indicator and the minimum error threshold algorithm to characterize the flood using the filtered images. Finally, we relate the flood inundation to the land subsidence in the Taiyuan basin by jointly analyzing the multitemporal SAR change detection results and interferometric SAR (InSAR) time-series measurements (preflood). The validation experiments compare the proposed filter with the Refined-Lee filter, Gamma filter, and a statistically homogeneous pixels selection based multitemporal SAR filter. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and advantage of the proposed STF-LRTA method in SAR despeckling and detail preservation, and the applicability to change scenes. The joint analyses reveal that land subsidence might be an important contributor to the flood event, and the flood recession process linearly correlates with time and subsidence magnitude.

The Source Physics Experiment (SPE) Phase I conducted six underground chemical explosions at the same experimental pad with the goal of characterizing underground explosions to enhance the United States (U.S.) ability to detect and discriminate underground nuclear explosions (UNEs). A fully polarimetric synthetic aperture RADAR (PolSAR) collected imagery in VideoSAR mode during the fifth and sixth explosions in the series (SPE-5 and SPE-6). Previously, we reported the prompt PolSAR surface changes cause by SPE-5 and SPE-6 explosions within seconds or minutes of the underground chemical explosions, including a drop of spatial coherence and polarimetric scattering changes. Therein it was hypothesized that surface changes occurred when surface particles experienced upward acceleration greater than 1 g. Because the SPE site was instrumented with surface accelerometers, we explore that hypothesis and report our findings in this article. We equate explosion-caused prompt surface expressions measured by PolSAR to the prompt surface movement measured by accelerometers. We tie these findings to UNE detection by comparing the PolSAR and accelerometer results to empirical ground motion predictions derived from accelerometer recordings of UNEs collected prior to cessation of U.S. nuclear testing. We find the single threshold greater than 1 g hypothesis is not correct for it does not explain the PolSAR results. Our findings show PolSAR surface coherence spatial extent is highly correlated with surface velocity, both measured and predicted, and the resulting surface deformation extent is corroborated by accelerometer records and the predicted lateral spall extent. Satellite Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), geological data and Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (SUAV) surveying was used to enhance our understanding of ground movement at five areas of interest in Northern Ireland. In total 68 ERS-1/2 images 1992-2000 were processed with the Small Baseline Subset (SBAS) InSAR technique to derive the baseline ground instability scenario of key areas of interest for five stakeholders: TransportNI, Northern Ireland Railways, Department for the Economy, Arup, and Belfast City Council. These stakeholders require monitoring of ground deformation across either their geotechnical infrastructure (i.e., embankments, cuttings, engineered fills and earth retaining structures) or assessment of subsidence risk as a result of abandoned mine workings, using the most efficient, cost-effective methods, with a view to minimising and managing risk to their businesses. The InSAR results provided an overview of the extent and magnitude of ground deformation for a 3000 km² region, including the key sites of the disused salt mines in Carrickfergus, the Belfast-Bangor railway line, Throne Bend and Ligoniel Park in Belfast, Straidkilly and Garron Point along the Antrim Coast Road, plus other urbanised areas in and around Belfast. Tailored SUAV campaigns with a X8 airframe and generation of very high resolution ortho-photographs and a 3D surface model via the Structure from Motion (SfM) approach at Maiden Mount salt mine collapse in Carrickfergus in 2016 and 2017 also demonstrate the benefits of very high resolution surveying technologies to detect localised deformation and indicators of ground instability. Advanced interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) postprocessing, like persistent scatterer InSAR (PS-InSAR), offers the possibility to investigate slow moving landslides, where standard interferometry is problematic. These advanced algorithms involve the analysis of a series of SAR acquisitions in both time and space. One input that requires particular attention for landslide applications is the external digital elevation model (DEM) that is used to correct the interferograms for the topographic phase term. When multiple elevation data sets are available for a given study area, it is difficult to decide which one should be used. In this paper, we test the sensitivity of PS-InSAR/Small Baseline Subset (SBAS) results to different DEMs. The study area is located in the Northern Apennines of Italy, where chaotic clay shales and fine-grained flysch host slow-moving earth flows and ancient rock slides. $C$ -band (Envisat) and $X$ -band (Cosmo-SkyMed) data are processed with different DEMs. We describe a simple framework to statistically analyze the influence of these models on the final PS-InSAR/SBAS results. We find that individual interferograms do not vary much depending on the DEM, while the results from PS-InSAR and SBAS analysis do vary. This is likely caused by the way the DEM error is estimated. We find also that the quality of the DEM is more important than the resolution and that $X$ -band InSAR data are more sensitive to the choice of the DEM than $C$ -band. A real-time monitoring system based on ground-based synthetic aperture radar interferometry (GB-InSAR) were developed and deployed with the objective to gain understanding of landslide dynamics in an area in Xerém (district of Duque de Caxias - RJ, Brazil). The area is subjected to landslide risk and the deployed system aims to provide subsidies to the authorities to prepare actions related to prevention and evacuation, and serve as the basis for a future early-warning system in the framework of the Civil Defense of Duque de Caxias. The system consists of a compact and rugged X-band GB-InSAR newly developed by Bradar, Brazil. The processing and monitoring methodology are proposed. Two campaigns, totaling six days, were carried out. The acquisitions of the first campaign occurred without rain. In the second campaign, rain events, varying from light to torrential rainfall, occurred for a period of time, in subsequent days, during the radar acquisitions. New insights on landslide dynamics are revealed. The monitoring data show that, approximately 10 h after heavy rainfall, the terrain movement on a slope reached 4 mm/h during ca. 5 to 8 h, resulting in velocities of 20 to 32 mm/day. The present article is an introductory paper in this special issue on synthetic aperture radar (SAR). A short review is presented on the recent trend and development of SAR and related techniques with selected topics, including the fields of applications, specifications of airborne and spaceborne SARs, and information contents in and interpretations of amplitude data, interferometric SAR (InSAR) data, and polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) data. The review is by no means extensive, and as such only brief summaries of of each selected topics and key references are provided. Sentinel-1 (S-1) has an unparalleled mapping capacity. In interferometric wide swath (IW) mode, three subswaths imaged in the novel Terrain Observation by Progressive Scans (TOPS) SAR mode result in a total swath width of 250 km. S-1 has become the European workhorse for large area mapping and interferometric monitoring at medium resolution. The interferometric processing of TOPS data however requires special consideration of the signal properties, resulting from the ScanSAR-type burst imaging and the antenna beam steering in azimuth. The high Doppler rate in azimuth sets very stringent coregistration requirements, making the use of enhanced spectral diversity (ESD) necessary to obtain the required fine azimuth coregistration accuracy. Other unique aspects of processing IW data, such as azimuth spectral filtering, image resampling, and data deramping and reramping, are reviewed, giving a recipe-like description that enables the user community to use S-1 IW mode repeat-pass SAR data. Interferometric results from S-1A are provided, demonstrating the mapping capacity of the S-1 system and its interferometric suitability for geophysical applications. An interferometric evaluation of a coherent interferometric pair over Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia, is provided, where several aspects related to coregistration, deramping, and synchronization are analyzed. Additionally, a spatiotemporal evaluation of the along-track shifts, which are directly related to the orbital/instrument timing error, measured from the SAR data is shown, which justifies the necessity to refine the azimuth shifts with ESD. As a novel mode of ground-based synthetic aperture radar (GB-SAR), Arc frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) SAR is rarely discussed in the literature up to now. Compared with the conventional rail GB-SAR system, the synthetic aperture is formed by the rotation of antennas, which can scan a wide azimuth extent. Due to its convenience and potential in SAR applications, the Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy Sciences, carried out a series of Arc FMCW SAR experiments in March 2013, and a lot of results were obtained. In this paper, we discuss the signal processing of Arc FMCW SAR and its first results in change detection and interferometric SAR. The components of the Arc FMCW SAR system are first described, and then, we focus on its signal processing, where the signal model and its properties are investigated; two focusing algorithms are developed for different purposes. The effectiveness of the algorithms is validated by both simulation and real data experiments. We also exhibit the applications of Arc FMCW SAR in landslide detection and digital-elevation-model extraction for the first time. Results show its huge potential in ground-based applications. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image coregistration is a key procedure before interferometric SAR (InSAR) time-series analysis can be started. However, many geophysical data sets suffer from severe decorrelation problems due to a variety of reasons, making precise coregistration a nontrivial task. Here, we present a new strategy that uses a pixel-offset series of detected subimage patches dominated by point-like targets (PTs) to improve SAR image coregistrations. First, all potentially coherent image pairs are coregistered in a conventional way. In this step, we propose a coregistration quality index for each image to rank its relative “significance” within the data set and to select a reference image for the SAR data set. Then, a pixel-offset series of detected PTs is made from amplitude maps to improve the geometrical mapping functions. Finally, all images are resampled depending on the pixel offsets calculated from the updated geometrical mapping functions. We used images from a rural region near the North Anatolian Fault in eastern Turkey to test the proposed method, and clear coregistration improvements were found based on amplitude stability. The accuracy of L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) differential interferometry (InSAR) on crustal deformation studies is largely compromised by ionosphere path delays on the radar signals. The ionosphere effects cause severe ionospheric distortion such as azimuth streaking and long wavelength phase distortion similar to orbital ramp error. Effective detection and correction of ionospheric phase distortion from L-band InSAR images are necessary to measure and accurately interpret surface displacement. In this paper, we investigate the performance improvement of L-band InSAR interseismic deformation measurements in southern California through the joint correction of both ionosphere noise and orbital error. Our results show that this method can effectively remove orbit and ionosphere phase distortions. In comparison with in situ GPS measurements, the achieved InSAR measurement accuracy is improved from ~ 30 mm to ~ 10 mm by the proposed joint correction method. We show that, after the joint correction, the remaining atmosphere noise can be further mitigated through stacking, leading to an RMS error of ~ 4.7 mm/year in resultant line-of-sight velocity, as compared with ~ 11.3 mm/year before the correction. Our results demonstrate that the proposed joint correction technique provides a promising way to jointly correct orbital and ionospheric artifacts in L-band InSAR studies of crustal deformation. Abstract: Multi-temporal ALOS/PALSAR images are used to automatically investigate landslide activity over an area of ~200km by ~350km in northern California and southern Oregon. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) deformation images, InSAR coherence maps, SAR backscattering intensity images, and a DEM gradient map are combined to detect active landslides by setting individual thresholds. More than 50 active landslides covering a total of about 40km2 area are detected. Then the short baseline subsets (SBAS) InSAR method is applied to retrieve time-series deformation patterns of individual detected landslides. Down-slope landslide motions observed from adjacent satellite tracks with slightly different radar look angles are used to verify InSAR results and measurement accuracy. Comparison of the landslide motion with the precipitation record suggests that the landslide deformation correlates with the rainfall rate, with a lag time of around 1–2months between the precipitation peak and the maximum landslide displacement. The results will provide new insights into landslide mechanisms in the Pacific Northwest, and facilitate development of early warning systems for landslides under abnormal rainfall conditions. Additionally, this method will allow identification of active landslides in broad areas of the Pacific Northwest in an efficient and systematic manner, including remote and heavily vegetated areas difficult to inventory by traditional methods. A fast offset estimation approach for interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) image pair subpixel registration is proposed for cases of relatively gentle topography and/or short baseline. A coarse-to-fine registration strategy is taken. The pixel-level offset is estimated in the coarse registration step by a fast feature-based estimation, which uses the speeded up robust feature operator and fast least trimmed squares (Fast-LTS) estimator to accelerate the feature extraction and parameter estimation. A fine registration is performed subsequently. The conventional normalized cross-correlation algorithm (NCCA) searches for the optimal subpixel offset by oversampling either the coarse cross correlation or the InSAR image patch pair. The offset estimation accuracy is restricted by the oversampling rate, and the computational burden is heavy when high accuracy is demanded. In this letter, we transform the oversampling and correlation searching process of NCCA into a nonlinear optimization problem, which takes the maximization of the coherent cross correlation as the objective function; by solving it, the subpixel offset can be fast and exactly obtained without any image oversampling. The final registration parameters are inverted by Fast-LTS fitting of a series of subpixel tie point correspondences which can be constructed after applying the approach to several image patch pairs. Abstract: Multi-temporal interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) is an effective tool to detect long-term seismotectonic motions by reducing the atmospheric artifacts, thereby providing more precise deformation signal. The commonly used approaches such as persistent scatterer InSAR (PSInSAR) and small baseline subset (SBAS) algorithms need to resolve the phase ambiguities in interferogram stacks either by searching a predefined solution space or by sparse phase unwrapping methods; however the efficiency and the success of phase unwrapping cannot be guaranteed. We present here an alternative approach – temporarily coherent point (TCP) InSAR (TCPInSAR) – to estimate the long term deformation rate without the need of phase unwrapping. The proposed approach has a series of innovations including TCP identification, TCP network and TCP least squares estimator. We apply the proposed method to the Los Angeles Basin in southern California where structurally active faults are believed capable of generating damaging earthquakes. The analysis is based on 55 interferograms from 32 ERS-1/2 images acquired during Oct. 1995 and Dec. 2000. To evaluate the performance of TCPInSAR on a small set of observations, a test with half of interferometric pairs is also performed. The retrieved TCPInSAR measurements have been validated by a comparison with GPS observations from Southern California Integrated GPS Network. Our result presents a similar deformation pattern as shown in past InSAR studies but with a smaller average standard deviation (4.6mm) compared with GPS observations, indicating that TCPInSAR is a promising alternative for efficiently mapping ground deformation even from a relatively smaller set of interferograms. Ground subsidence is a major concern for land use planning and engineering risk assessment. This paper explores subsidence detection by the persistent scatterer (PS) interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technique using the multitemporal high resolution spaceborne SAR images. We first describe the mathematical models and the data reduction procedures of the PS solution. The experiments of subsidence detection are then carried out over the Jinghai County in Tianjin (China) which has been sinking due to overuse of groundwater. The time series of high resolution SAR images collected by the X-band radar sensor onboard the satellite TerraSAR-X (TSX) are utilized for the PS detection, PS networking and subsidence estimation. The experimental results demonstrate that the high resolution of TSX SAR images can dramatically increase the PSs' density and coverage extent, especially in the built-up areas. Subsidence values can be extracted on the individual objects like buildings, street lamps and manhole covers, and on the linear engineering structures like the Jinghu high-speed railway. The PS InSAR with short radar wavelength (3.1 cm) is quite sensitive to ground displacement in the radar line-of-sight direction, and the derived subsidence measurements are in good agreement with the in situ data taken by optical leveling. Synthetic aperture radar interferometry is limited by temporal and geometrical decorrelation. Permanent scatterers (PSs) are helpful to overcome these problems, but their density in agricultural and out-of-town areas is not always sufficient. The forthcoming availability of satellite platforms with thinner orbital tubes and shorter revisit times will enhance the use of interferogram stacks, which are usable for distributed and progressively decorrelating targets, like those found in agricultural areas. To estimate the possibilities of the interferogram stack technique, a Markovian model for the temporal decorrelation is considered. ERS-l data measured in C-band over Rome with a three-day repeat cycle are used to identify the parameters for this model, namely, the decorrelation time (estimated as 40 days) and the short-term coherence (estimated as 0.6). In the hypothesis of small deviations from a model of the motion, the optimal weights to be used to combine a sequence of interferograms taken at intervals that are shorter than the decorrelation time are calculated in the cases of progressive and sinusoidal ground motion. The dispersion of the optimal estimate of the motion is then determined. This model is extended to frequencies other than C-band. These evaluations are compared with the known results obtained for PSs. As an example, the case of a time interval between the takes of T = 12 days is considered. With N consecutive images, interferogram stack results are equivalent to PSs if the pixel count in the window used to smooth the interferograms grows with N². [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traditional synthetic aperture radar (SAR) deceptive jamming can effectively generate deceptive scenes or false targets in SAR images. However, these false targets or scenes can be easily distinguished or eliminated by the multichannel SAR system. To interfere with the multichannel SAR, we first analyzed the results of SAR deceptive jamming generated by one transponder and two transponders against three-channel SAR- ground moving target indication (GMTI). Then, we propose a new deceptive jamming method against three-channel SAR-GMTI by using three synergetic transponders. By modulating each transponder with a complex coefficient, three synergetic transponders can generate false moving targets with the controllable radial velocity and located azimuth position in three-channel SAR-GMTI. Besides, in this paper, we also introduce an algorithm to deploy three transponders reasonably by utilizing the minimum condition number. In the end, a general architecture of multiple transponders deceiving multichannel SAR is given. The proposed method can not only generate deceptive false targets against multichannel SAR-GMTI, but also guide the production of a deceptive digital elevation model (DEM) against multichannel interferometric SAR (InSAR).
