Forward-looking multi-channel synthetic aperture radar (FLMC-SAR) can realize two-dimension image formation in monostatic mode. This system must face the problem of left–right Doppler ambiguity. In the traditional methods, the spatial degrees of freedom of the FLMC-SAR system is expected to achieve Doppler ambiguity resolving by beamforming approaches. However, the influence of array error on beamforming cannot be ignored. In practice, the array error will lead to the mismatch of the space–time characteristic, which will reduce the performance of the Doppler ambiguity resolving method based on beamforming. This paper proposes a sparsity-based joint array calibration and ambiguity resolving method to enhance the robustness of FLMC-SAR imagery. For the FLMC-SAR system, the space–time characteristic of targets is first analyzed, based on which the observation model of FLMC-SAR Doppler ambiguity combined with array error is derived. Then, the Doppler ambiguity resolving and array error estimation are transformed into a sparse recovery problem. A modified quasi-Newton method is proposed to realize the array error estimation and Doppler ambiguity resolving of all targets in the local area. Finally, the results of the simulation and the real-data experiments verify that the proposed method can achieve FLMC-SAR Doppler ambiguity resolving and imaging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forward-looking multichannel synthetic aperture radar (FLMC-SAR) is an important tool for modern remote sensing applications, which has the capability to reconstruct the high-resolution image of the front area. However, due to the azimuth-variant characteristics of the motion errors over a long aperture, FLMC-SAR data processing is usually a challenging task, especially when involving the motion compensation (MOCO) coupled with Doppler ambiguity resolving. To accomplish an accurate MOCO for FLMC-SAR, a novel parametric azimuth-variant MOCO approach is proposed in this article. Aiming at the coupling problem of MOCO and Doppler ambiguity resolving over the full aperture, we can decouple them through the subaperture division. As a full synthetic aperture is decomposed into several subapertures, the high-order motion errors of the full aperture can be decomposed into the first-order motion errors of the subaperture. On this basis, the mismatch of the space–time spectrum caused by the motion errors can be solved by spectral estimation, yielding Doppler ambiguity resolving for each subaperture. Meanwhile, the azimuth-variant characteristic of motion errors in FLMC-SAR system is characterized by a parametric angle-dependent quadratic phase error (QPE) model. The motion parameters are estimated by a joint multichannel angle estimation-based signal quadratic decomposition method. Immediately, the MOCO for ambiguous targets with different motion errors can be processed separately to improve the imaging performance. Traditional synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging is limited to achieve the high-resolution image of the side-looking areas. Nevertheless, equipped with a small size linear array across the trajectory, forward-looking multichannel SAR (FLMC-SAR) is capable of reconstructing the high-resolution image of the front area. In FLMC-SAR imaging framework, the left-right Doppler ambiguity is expected to resolve with beamforming approaches using the multichannel system diversity. However, beamforming-based Doppler ambiguity resolving is sensitive to the array deviation angle, which causes a mismatch between the azimuth angle and Doppler frequency. In this article, we propose an array deviation angle calibration and imagery algorithm for FLMC-SAR. The space–time characteristic of FLMC-SAR is explored and the range-dependent array deviation angle model is established. Following the Doppler beam sharpening imaging, strong targets are selected to derive the mismatch of the space–time characteristic. A maximum likelihood estimation of the array deviation angle is developed to modify the matching between the azimuth angle and Doppler frequency. Therefore, the left-right Doppler ambiguity can be solved correctly, yielding high-resolution FLMC-SAR imagery. This study proposes a clutter suppression approach and the corresponding ground moving target imaging algorithm for hypersonic vehicle (HSV) borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system with multiple‐input–multiple‐output (MIMO) antenna. HSV‐borne radar platforms fly with a high speed, which can lead to severe Doppler ambiguity, and the radar system usually cannot provide enough channel freedom degree for clutter suppression. In this study, an SAR ground moving target indication (GMTI) approach with MIMO antenna is presented for HSV‐borne radar. Compared with the traditional multichannel SAR GMTI methods, the proposed approach can provide more space freedom degree and obtain a wider imaging swath without decreasing pulse repetition frequency. Besides, the improved deramp space‐time adaptive processing method decreases the ambiguity times of the ground clutter and focuses the moving target. While there are recent researches on hypersonic vehicle-borne multichannel synthetic aperture radar in ground moving target indication (HSV-MC-SAR/GMTI), this article, which specifically explores a robust GMTI scheme for the highly squinted HSV-MC-SAR in dive mode, is novel. First, an improved equivalent range model (IERM) for stationary targets and GMTs is explored, which enjoys a concise expression and therefore offers the potential to simplify the GMTI process. Then, based on the proposed model, a robust GMTI scheme is derived in detail, paying particular attention to Doppler ambiguity arising from the high-speed and high-resolution wide-swath. Furthermore, it retrieves the accurate two-dimensional speeds of GMTs and realizes the satisfactory performance of clutter rejection and GMT imaging, generating the matched beamforming and enhancing the GMT energy. • The prior cross-track velocity (CTV) estimation is more accurate and significantly simplifies and improves the subsequent extraction, imaging, and localization of moving target. • The accurate clutter suppression method better preserves the moving target envelope and achieves higher signal-to-clutter-and-noise ratio (SCNR). • The improved moving target focusing and localization method which avoids cumbersome CTV search and simplifies the range walk correction (RWC) procedures, has lower computational complexity. • The proposed scheme has higher location accuracy of moving target, achieving accurate estimation and compensation of moving target's 2-D velocities. This paper investigates a novel ground moving target indication (GMTI) scheme for a hypersonic vehicle-borne multichannel synthetic aperture radar (MC-SAR) system with Doppler ambiguity. First, after the range compression and azimuth chirp Fourier transform (CFT), by applying the eigenspace-based adaptive sum and difference beams (EASDB) on the coarse-focused images, the high-precision cross-track velocity (CTV) can be retrieved. Then, utilizing the high-precision CTV to construct an accurate moving target steering vector to extract the moving target energy. With the proposed CFT-two-step method, we have avoided cumbersome CTV search, and simplified the process of range walk correction, resulting in lower computational complexity. Compared to the CFT-center and CFT-two-step methods, the proposed scheme obtains the accurate two-dimension motion parameters of a moving target, and has better performance and robustness in the detection, focusing, and location, preserving the moving target envelope and achieving higher signal-to-clutter-and-noise ratio (SCNR). This paper investigates a robust clutter suppression and detection of ground moving target (GMT) imaging method for a multichannel synthetic aperture radar (MC-SAR) with high-squint angle mounted on hypersonic vehicle (HSV). A modified coarse-focused method with cubic chirp Fourier transform (CFT) is explored first that permits the coarsely focused imageries to be recovered, thus alleviated the impacts of GMT Doppler ambiguity and range cell migration (RCM). After that, in combination with joint-pixel model, a robust clutter suppression method which enhances the GMT integration, and improving the accuracy of radial speed (RS) recovery by modifying the matching between the beamformer center and GMT, is proposed. Due to that the first-order phase compensation and RS retrieval are predigested, the proposed algorithm has lower the algorithmic complexity.
