Using synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction measurements, we identified crystalline material in two particles of extraterrestrial origin extracted from the Stardust Interstellar Dust Collector. The first particle, I1047,1,34 (Hylabrook), consisted of a mosaiced olivine grain approximately 1 µm in size with internal strain fields up to 0.3%. The unit cell dimensions were a = 4.85 ± 0.08 Å, b = 10.34 ± 0.16 Å, c = 6.08 ± 0.13 Å (2σ). The second particle, I1043,1,30 (Orion), contained an olivine grain ≈ 2 µm in length and >500 nm in width. Abstract: A quantification tool for energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) spectral data is presented, based on the application of Monte Carlo simulations in an iterative, inverse manner. Acting as an open-source plug-in to the widespread PyMca package, it provides users with a superior alternative to the fundamental parameter method based built-in quantification tool, taking into account higher order interactions, M-lines and cascade effects. Examples are shown demonstrating the usefulness of our implementation through data recorded at the synchrotron X-ray fluorescence microprobe installed at the HASYLAB Beamline L, Hamburg, Germany. Abstract: We detected additional CAI-like material in STARDUST mission samples of comet 81P/Wild 2. Two highly refractory cometary dust fragments were identified in the impact track 110 [C2012, 0, 110, 0, 0] by applying high resolution synchrotron induced confocal and conventional XRF analysis (HR SR-XRF). The use of a polycapillary lens in front of the detector for confocal spectroscopy dramatically improves the fidelity of particle measurements by removing contribution from the surrounding aerogel. The high spatial resolution (300×300nm2; 300×1000nm2) obtained allowed the detailed non-destructive in situ (trapped in aerogel) study of impacted grains at the sub-μm level. For the two largest particles of the track, the terminal particle and a second particle along the impact track, Ca concentration is up to 30 times higher than CI and Ti is enriched by a factor of 2 compared to CI. High resolution (HR) SR-XRF mapping also reveals that the highest concentrations of Ca, Ti, Fe (and Ni) measured within each grain belongs to different areas of the respective maps which indicate that the particles are composed of several chemically diverse mineral phases. This is in agreement with the finding of a complex phase assemblage of highly refractory minerals in the first ever detected Stardust mission CAI grain “Inti” of Track 25. Principle component analysis (PCA) is a powerful tool for extracting the dominant mineral components and was applied to the two grains indicating that regions in the terminal particle and the second particle are consistent with anorthite or grossite and gehlenite, monticellite or Dmitryivanovite (CaAl2O4), respectively. Our new findings demonstrate that the HR SR-XRF with confocal geometry and PCA analysis is capable of identifying CAI-like fragments without the need to extract particles from the aerogel matrix which is a time-consuming, complex and destructive process. Furthermore, the detection of new CAI-like fragments in the coma dust of comet 81P/Wild 2 strengthens the observation that strong mixing effects and, therefore, mass transport before or during comet formation must have occurred at least up to the region where Kuiper Belt comets formed (∼30AU). Abstract: Extraction of As, Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni and Ti from two white as well as from one brown rice samples was studied by inductively coupled plasma sector field mass spectrometry (ICP-SF-MS). Samples were subjected to cold and hot water extraction (rice mass to deionised water volume ratio=1:6, and 1:3, respectively). The discarded liquids were freeze-dried and digested by microwave-assisted digestion. About 50% of the content of the investigated elements could be extracted from the white rice. In case of the brown rice, the boiling water contained As, Cd, Ni and Ti in significant percentages. Elemental distributions in the rice grains determined by synchrotron radiation confocal micro-X-ray fluorescence analysis revealed that a surface layer having a thickness of about 80μm is the richest region in elements. Ti was detectable only in this so-called skin region. Good correlation was observed for the extraction of As, Mn, Ni and Ti by the above-mentioned two techniques. Thus, in regions affected by heavy metal and other toxic element contamination, those rice dishes would be preferred whose preparation should need abundant amounts of water for washing and cooking, which later should be discarded. Abstract: New reference materials consisting of cobalt thin films on gold were prepared by sputter deposition. The thickness and homogeneity of the films were characterized using synchrotron radiation micro-XRF. The samples can be used as reference materials to quantify cobalt phthalocyanine and cobalt porphyrin modified gold electrodes which have been analyzed with synchrotron radiation micro-XRF.
