Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is an important gram-positive pathogen and an emerging zoonotic pathogen that causes meningitis in swine and humans. Although several virulence factors have been characterized in S. suis, the underlying mechanisms of pathogenesis are not fully understood. In this study, we identified Zinc metalloproteinase C (ZmpC) probably as a critical virulence factor widely distributed in S. suis strains. ZmpC was identified as a critical facilitator in the development of bacterial meningitis, as evidenced by the detection of increased expression of TNF-α, IL-8, and matrix metalloprotease 9 (MMP-9). Subcellular localization analysis further revealed that ZmpC was localized to the cell wall surface and gelatin zymography analysis showed that ZmpC could cleave human MMP-9. Mice challenge demonstrated that ZmpC provided protection against S. suis CZ130302 (serotype Chz) and ZY05719 (serotype 2) infection. In conclusion, these results reveal that ZmpC plays an important role in promoting CZ130302 to cause mouse meningitis and may be a potential candidate for a S. suis CZ130302 vaccine., (© 2024. Streptococcus suis is a major bacterial pathogen in pigs and an emerging zoonotic pathogen. Different S. suis serotypes exhibit diverse characteristics in population structure and pathogenicity. Surveillance data highlight the significance of S. suis serotype 4 (SS4) in swine streptococcusis, a pathotype causing human infections. However, except for a few epidemiologic studies, the information on SS4 remains limited. In this study, we investigated the population structure, pathogenicity, and antimicrobial characteristics of SS4 based on 126 isolates, including one from a patient with septicemia. We discovered significant diversities within this population, clustering into six minimum core genome (MCG) groups (1, 2, 3, 4, 7-2, and 7-3) and five lineages. Two main clonal complexes (CCs), CC17 and CC94, belong to MCG groups 1 and 3, respectively. Numerous important putative virulence-associated genes are present in these two MCG groups, and 35.00% (7/20) of pig isolates from CC17, CC94, and CC839 (also belonging to MCG group 3) were highly virulent (mortality rate ≥ 80%) in zebrafish and mice, similar to the human isolate ID36054. Cytotoxicity assays showed that the human and pig isolates of SS4 strains exhibit significant cytotoxicity to human cells. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing showed that 95.83% of strains isolated from our labs were classified as multidrug-resistant. Prophages were identified as the primary vehicle for antibiotic resistance genes. Our study demonstrates the public health threat posed by SS4, expanding the understanding of SS4 population structure and pathogenicity characteristics and providing valuable information for its surveillance and prevention.

Exosomes, which are small membrane-enclosed vesicles, are actively released into the extracellular space by a variety of cells. Growing evidence indicates that exosomes derived from virus-infected cells can selectively encapsulate viral proteins, genetic materials, or even entire virions. This enables them to mediate cell-to-cell communication and facilitate virus transmission. Classical swine fever (CSF) is a disease listed by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) Terrestrial Animal Health Code and must be reported to the organisation. It is caused by classical swine fever virus (CSFV) belonging to the Flaviviridae family. Recent studies have demonstrated that extracellular vesicles originating from autophagy can facilitate the antibody-resistant spread of classical swine fever virus. However, due to the extreme difficulty in achieving a complete separation from virions, the role of exosomes during CSFV infection and proliferation remains elusive. In this study, we ingeniously chose to perform immunoprecipitation (IP) targeting the CSFV E2 protein, thereby achieving the complete removal of infectious virions. Subsequently, we discovered that the purified exosomes are shown to contain viral genomic RNA and partial viral proteins. Furthermore, exosomes secreted by CSFV-infected cells can evade CSFV-specific neutralizing antibodies, establish subsequent infection, and stimulate innate immune system after uptake by recipient cells. In summary, exosomes play a critical role in CSFV transmission. Streptococcus suis, the leading causative agent of swine streptococcosis, is considered as a severe zoonotic and foodborne pathogen for humans. Characteristics of population structure and pathogenicity of S. suis vary significantly by serotypes. As one of the main pathogenic serotypes causing clinical disease in pigs, very little is known about the pathogenicity, population structure, and antimicrobial resistance of S. suis serotype 8 (SS8). In this study, the genome of 26 SS8 strains isolated from healthy and diseased pigs was sequenced. Together with 38 sequences from NCBI, we found that SS8 population was clustered into 12 sequence types (ST) and 4 minimum core genome (MCG) groups, linked to the geographical distribution. Noteworthily, 10 strains belonged to MCG group 1 which was defined to possess the capacity to cause global outbreaks in our previous study. We found that 75% (9/12) of representative SS8 strains were virulent in mice and zebrafish, including all ST1241 strains. No virulence indicators were identified from 67 putative virulence-associated genes mainly identified among pathogenic serotype 2 strains. Instead, we found that the genotype of some of these genes was correlated to their evolution. All 26 isolates were classified as multidrug-resistant strains by antimicrobial susceptibility testing. The high carrying rate of tetO and ermB, mainly disseminated by integrative mobilizable elements, contributed to the prevalent resistance phenotypes to macrolides, lincosamides and tetracyclines. Streptococcus pasteurianus, an underreported opportunistic pathogen, is considered an increasingly recognized cause of meningitis and bacteremia in many animals and humans worldwide. However, except for some epidemiological studies, there is no report about the gene-deletion mutagenesis, virulence factors, reservoir niches or animal infection models for this pathogen. In this study, we first isolated an S. pasteurianus strain from a newly weaned piglet's brain with meningitis. The genomic sequence of this swine isolate WUSP067 shared high homology with that of two human strains. The comparative genome analysis showed that strain WUSP067 contained a fucose utilization cluster absent in human strains, and it shared 91% identity with that of an integrative and conjugative element (ICE) ICE ssuZJ20091101-2 from Streptococcus suis, another important swine bacterial pathogen. Strain WUSP067 was resistant to erythromycin, tulathromycin, lincomycin, clindamycin, doxycycline and gentamycin, and ICEs are vehicles for harbouring antimicrobial resistance genes. The infection model was established using the 3-week-old newly weaned ICR mice. The 50% lethal dose value of strain WUSP067 was 4.0 × 10 7 colony-forming units per mouse. The infected mice showed severe signs of meningitis and pathological changes in brains. Furthermore, the capsule-deficient mutant was generated using natural transformation, and we showed that capsule was an essential virulence factor for S. pasteurianus. In addition, we found that tonsils and hilar lymph nodes of healthy pigs may be reservoir niches for this bacterium. Porcine extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) is occurring with increasing frequency in China, which causes acute septicemia and sudden death in pigs leading to significant economic losses. Bacterial survival and even proliferation within host bloodstream are a common manifestation of a number of bacterial septicemias, including porcine ExPEC diseases. However, the underlying pathogenesis for this novel pathotype of ExPEC has not been explored deeply. Here, we used a conjunction with transposon mutagenesis to identify the mechanisms of bacterial fitness involved in optimal growth of porcine ExPEC in swine serum ex vivo under static culture. Our work identified 28 genes involved in nucleotide biosynthesis, extracellular polysaccharide biosynthesis, regulators Fur and FNR, acid/zinc resistance, and Deley-Douderoff carbon metabolism that are required for the serum fitness. Subsequent functional analyses revealed that either interruption of de novo nucleotide biosynthesis or blocking of several extracellular polysaccharide biosynthesis including O2-antigen, Lipid A-core, and ECA significantly affect porcine ExPEC's growth in swine serum and proliferation in host bloodstream. Furthermore, the reasonable regulations of iron and anaerobic metabolisms in response to host stimuli by global regulators Fur and FNR also play key roles during systemic infection of porcine ExPEC. These findings provide compelling evidences that de novo nucleotide biosynthesis may enable porcine ExPEC to adapt to swine blood-specific nutrient availability, and the effective assembly of O-antigen, lipid A-core, and ECA is required to resist the bactericidal activity of swine serum. These studies contribute to better understand the underlying mechanisms employed by porcine ExPEC to survive, grow in the swine bloodstream, and cause disease. Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is an important zoonotic pathogen that causes septicaemia, meningitis and streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome in its host, and recent studies have shown that S. suis could be competent for natural genetic transformation. Transformation is an important mechanism for the horizontal transfer of DNA, but some elements that affect the transformation process need to be further explored. Upon entering the competent state, Streptococcus species stimulate the transcription of competence-related genes that are responsible for exogenous DNA binding, uptake and processing. In this study, we performed conserved promoter motif and qRT-PCR analyses and identified CrfP as a novel murein hydrolase that is widespread in S. suis and stimulated with a peptide pheromone in the competent state through a process controlled by ComX. A bioinformatics analysis revealed that CrfP consists of a CHAP hydrolase domain and two bacterial Src homology 3-binding (SH3b) domains. Further characterization showed that CrfP could be exported to extracellular bacterial cells and lytic S. suis strains of different serotypes, and this finding was verified by TEM and a turbidity assay. To investigate the potential effect of CrfP in vivo, a gene-deletion mutant (ΔcrfP) was constructed. Instead of stopping the natural transformation process, the inactivation of CrfP clearly reduced the effective transformation rate. Overall, these findings provide evidence showing that CrfP is important for S. suis serovar 2 competence.

Porcine extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) is occurring with increasing frequency in China, and leads to significant economic and welfare costs in the swine industry. The underlying mechanisms of porcine ExPEC in blood colonization during systematic infection is poorly understood. Here we measured the gene expression of porcine ExPEC in infected animal bloodstream in vivo and fresh swine blood in vitro. Using comparisons with P values of ≤ 0.01, we identified 354 and 313 genes as being significantly up- or down-regulated at least 2-fold change during bloodstream infection, respectively. Excepting for an array of iron acquisition systems, numerous genes involved in carbon central metabolism and anaerobic respiratory chains were upregulated here. These genes were categorized into several clusters including the TCA-cycle (frdABCD, citCEFXG), d-ribose transporter (rbsDACB), nickel transporter (nikABCDER), NiFe hydrogenase (hybOABCDEF, hycBCDEFG), Hyp-complex (hypABCDE), DMSO reductase (dmsABC and ynfEFGHI), format dehydrogenase (fdnGHI) and NADH dehydrogenase I (nuoA-N). The mutant with simultaneous inactivation of ribose and citrate imports showed significant reduced fitness in host blood, suggesting these two carbohydrates are utilized by central metabolism network as important carbon-source during bloodstream infection. Similar deficiency was also observed in the mutant double deleted NiFe hydrogenase 2 and 3 anaerobic respiratory chains. Further study found that FNR (a global regulator facilitating bacterial adaptation to anaerobic conditions) is an important regulator in response to bloodstream to activate center metabolism and anaerobic respiratory chains, thus contribute to the full-virulence of porcine ExPEC. Streptococcus suis is a major swine pathogen and an important zoonotic agent worldwide. At least nine serotypes can infect human so far. Although 29 serotypes (1-19, 21, 23-25, 27-31 and 1/2) strains are considered as authentic S. suis, a novel variant serotype Chz and strains carrying 20 novel capsular polysaccharide loci (NCL) have been identified recently. However, information about pathogenic and antimicrobial resistance characteristics of strains carrying NCLs is still unavailable. In this study, we identified six new NCLs (designated as NCL21-26) from 35 non-typeable S. suis strains by agglutination tests and whole genome sequencing analysis. Further analysis of the genetic context of NCL25 and NCL26 showed a mosaic structure of the capsular polysaccharide loci. NCL25 exhibited considerable similarity to that of serotypes 10 and 11, and NCL26 shared similarity to that of serotype 9 and NCL4. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing demonstrated that strains carrying NCL21-26 were all resistant to clindamycin, lincomycin, erythromycin, tilmicosin and tetracycline. Animal infection experiments showed that the virulence of NCL26 strain NJ1112 isolated from a disease pig was similar to that of S. suis serotype 2 virulent strain SC070731 in both zebrafish and mouse infection models, highlighting the necessity for surveillance of strains belonging to NCL26. We also developed a multiplex PCR assay to detect NCL21-26 strains. Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is an emerging zoonotic agent that is responsible for significant economic losses to the porcine industry worldwide. However, most research regarding the pathogenic mechanisms has used in vitro cultures of S. suis, which may not provide an accurate representation of the in vivo biological activities. In this study, 188 differential abundance S. suis proteins were identified in in vivo samples obtained from the blood of the infected pigs. These were compared with in vitro samples by a Tandem Mass Tags (TMT) experiment. Thus, a virulence associated network was established using the enriched differential abundance proteins (obtained via bioinformatics analysis in this study) and the previously reported putative virulence factors associated with in vivo infection. One of the most important up-regulated hubs in this network, adhE (an acetaldehyde-CoA/alcohol dehydrogenase) was found. Furthermore, knocking out adhE in S. suis serotype 2 strain ZY05719 decreased virulence. Cell culture experiments and far-western blot analysis showed that adhE is involved in adhesion to Caco-2 cells; Hsp60 could be one of the receptors for this protein., Significance: This study is a systematical research to identify in vivo regulated virulence associated proteins of S. suis in pigs. It constructs a network consisting of in vivo infection related factors for the first time to get to know the coordinated actions of a multitude of factors that lead to host pathogenicity and filter the most important hubs. The individual factors that contribute to infection is also identified. A novel differential protein adhE which is one of the most important hubs of this network and is up-regulated in abundance in vivo is found to moonlight as an important adhesion by binding Hsp60 and finally contributes to virulence., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Streptococcus suis is an important swine pathogen that can cause a variety of diseases. Streptococcus suis serotype 9 (SS9) is a prevalent serotype, but limited information is available. Here, we studied and compared 30 SS9 isolates, including 24 isolates from China between year 2004 and 2013, 5 isolates from Vietnam and a serotype reference isolate from Denmark. A multilocus sequence typing (MLST) analysis was performed to exploit the genetic relationships between those isolates. The phylogenetic tree based on the MLST data divides those isolates into two clades (I and II), revealing different evolutionary paths of collected strains. A virulence genotyping analysis was performed by detecting 23 virulence-related genes; the clustering result also revealed two clusters (I and II), highly in accordance with MLST analysis result, showing that phylogenetic relatedness led to the presence of similar virulence genotypes. Murine model infection experiment was performed to assess the virulence of those strains in cluster I and cluster II, which displayed high virulence diversity even within a same cluster/ST. Notably, ST 243 could be regarded as an ST with high virulence potential in SS9. In conclusion, this study has revealed high genetic and virulence diversity in SS9 isolates., (© FEMS 2017. Muramidase-released protein (MRP) of Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (SS2) is an important epidemic virulence marker with an unclear role in bacterial infection. To investigate the biologic functions of MRP, 3 mutants named Δmrp, Δmrp domain 1 (Δmrp-d1), and Δmrp domain 2 (Δmrp-d2) were constructed to assess the phenotypic changes between the parental strain and the mutant strains. The results indicated that MRP domain 1 (MRP-D1, the non-conserved region of MRP from a virulent strain, a.a. 242-596) played a critical role in adherence of SS2 to host cells, compared with MRP domain 1* (MRP-D1*, the non-conserved region of MRP from a low virulent strain, a.a. 239-598) or MRP domain 2 (MRP-D2, the conserved region of MRP, a.a. 848-1222). We found that MRP-D1 but not MRP-D2, could bind specifically to fibronectin (FN), factor H (FH), fibrinogen (FG), and immunoglobulin G (IgG). Additionally, we confirmed that mrp-d1 mutation significantly inhibited bacteremia and brain invasion in a mouse infection model. The mrp-d1 mutation also attenuated the intracellular survival of SS2 in RAW246.7 macrophages, shortened the growth ability in pig blood and decreased the virulence of SS2 in BALB/c mice. Furthermore, antiserum against MRP-D1 was found to dramatically impede SS2 survival in pig blood. Finally, immunization with recombinant MRP-D1 efficiently enhanced murine viability after SS2 challenge, indicating its potential use in vaccination strategies. Collectively, these results indicated that MRP-D1 is involved in SS2 virulence and eloquently demonstrate the function of MRP in pathogenesis of infection.

Entry of the α-coronavirus porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) requires specific proteases to activate spike (S) protein for the membrane fusion of the virion to the host cell following receptor binding. Herein, PEDV isolate 85-7 could proliferate and induce cell-cell fusion in a trypsin independent manner on Vero cells, and eight homologous mutation strains were screened by continuous proliferation in the absence of trypsin on Vero cells. According to the whole genome sequence comparative analysis, we identified four major variations located in nonstructural protein 2, S, open reading frame 3, and envelope (E) genes, respectively. Comparative analyses of their genomic variations and proliferation characteristics identified a single mutation within the S2' cleavage site between C30 and C40 mutants: the substitution of conserved arginine (R) by a glycine (G) (R895G). This change resulted in weaker cell-cell fusion, smaller plaque morphology, higher virus titer and serious microfilament condensation. Further analysis confirmed that this mutation was responsible for optimal cell-adaptation, but not the determinant for trypsin-dependent entry of PEDV. Otherwise, a novel variation (16-20 aa deletion and an L25P mutation) in the transmembrane domain of the E protein affected multiple infection processes, including up-regulation of the production of the ER stress indicator GRP78, improving the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-8, and promoting apoptosis. The results of this study provide a better understanding of the potential mechanisms of viral functional proteins in PEDV replication, infection, and fitness.

Streptococcus suis (SS), an important pathogen for pigs, is not only considered as a zoonotic agent for humans, but is also recognized as a major reservoir of antimicrobial resistance contributing to the spread of resistance genes to other pathogenic Streptococcus species. In addition to serotype 2 (SS2), serotype 9 (SS9) is another prevalent serotype isolated from diseased pigs. Although many SS strains have been sequenced, the complete genome of a non-SS2 virulent strain has been unavailable to date. Here, we report the complete genome of GZ0565, a virulent strain of SS9, isolated from a pig with meningitis. Comparative genomic analysis revealed five new putative virulence or antimicrobial resistance-associated genes in strain GZ0565 but not in SS2 virulent strains. These five genes encode a putative triacylglycerol lipase, a TipAS antibiotic-recognition domain protein, a putative TetR family transcriptional repressor, a protein containing a LPXTG domain and a G5 domain, and a type VII secretion system (T7SS) putative substrate (EsxA), respectively. Western blot analysis showed that strain GZ0565 can secrete EsxA. We generated an esxA deletion mutant and showed that EsxA contributes to SS virulence in a mouse infection model. Additionally, the antibiotic resistance gene vanZ SS was identified and expression of vanZ SS conferred resistance to teicoplanin and dalbavancin in Streptococcus agalactiae. We believe this is the first experimental demonstration of the existence of the T7SS putative substrate EsxA and its contribution to bacterial virulence in SS. The two opportunistic pathogens, Streptococcus suis (S. suis) and Aerococcus. viridans (A. viridans) were isolated from the brains of piglets suffered bacterial meningitis in a farm of China. The murine model has been established to evaluate the pathogenicity and symbiotic relationship of S. suis and A. viridans simultaneously infection. Our results demonstrated the ability of new serotype S. suis to cause the classical bacterial meningitis and death were greatly enhanced during co-infection with A. viridans in mice at a proportion. We also examined the distribution and titer of bacteria coinfection in organs, the titer of S. suis appeared a significant trend for an increase in the lung meanwhile the concentration titer of A. viridans maintain a low level. This is the first reported the A. viridans and S. suis coinfection cause the bacterial meningitis outbroke in the piglets and mice. Background: Swine extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) is an important pathogen that leads to economic and welfare costs in the swine industry worldwide, and is occurring with increasing frequency in China. By far, various virulence factors have been recognized in ExPEC. Here, we investigated the virulence genotypes and clonal structure of collected strains to improve the knowledge of phylogenetic traits of porcine ExPECs in China., Results: We isolated 64 Chinese porcine ExPEC strains from 2013 to 14 in China. By multiplex PCR, the distribution of isolates belonging to phylogenetic groups B1, B2, A and D was 9.4%, 10.9%, 57.8% and 21.9%, respectively. Nineteen virulence-related genes were detected by PCR assay; ompA, fimH, vat, traT and iutA were highly prevalent. Virulence-related genes were remarkably more prevalent in group B2 than in groups A, B1 and D; notably, usp, cnf1, hlyD, papA and ibeA were only found in group B2 strains. Genotyping analysis was performed and four clusters of strains (named I to IV) were identified. Cluster IV contained all isolates from group B2 and Cluster IV isolates had the strongest pathogenicity in a mouse infection model. As phylogenetic group B2 and D ExPEC isolates are generally considered virulent, multilocus sequence typing (MLST) analysis was performed for these isolates to further investigate genetic relationships. Two novel sequence types, ST5170 and ST5171, were discovered. Among the nine clonal complexes identified among our group B2 and D isolates, CC12 and CC95 have been indicated to have high zoonotic pathogenicity. The distinction between group B2 and non-B2 isolates in virulence and genotype accorded with MLST analysis., Conclusion: This study reveals significant genetic diversity among ExPEC isolates and helps us to better understand their pathogenesis. Importantly, our data suggest group B2 (Cluster IV) strains have the highest risk of causing animal disease and illustrate the correlation between genotype and virulence.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea has become pandemic in the Asian pig-breeding industry, causing significant economic loss. In the present study, 11 complete genomes of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) field isolates from China were determined and analyzed. Frequently occurring mutations were observed, which suggested that full understanding of the genomic and epidemiological characteristics is critical in the fight against PEDV epidemics. Comparative analysis of 49 available genomes clustered the PEDV strains into pandemic (PX) and classical (CX) groups and identified four hypervariable regions (V1 to V4). Further study indicated key roles for the spike (S) gene and the V2 region in distinguishing between the PX and CX groups and for studying genetic evolution. Genotyping and phylogeny-based geographical dissection based on 219 S genes revealed the complexity and severity of PEDV epidemics in Asia. Many subgroups have formed, with a wide array of mutations in different countries, leading to the outbreak of PEDV in Asia. Spatiotemporal reconstruction based on the analysis suggested that the pandemic group strains originated from South Korea and then extended into Japan, Thailand, and China. However, the novel pandemic strains in South Korea that appeared after 2013 may have originated from a Chinese variant. Thus, the serious PED epidemics in China and South Korea in recent years were caused by the complex subgroups of PEDV. Objective: We studied the serological response between the special regions on the Torque teno sus virus 2 (TTSuV2) ORF1 coded protein and the porcine sera from conventional pigs., Methods: Based on a Chinese TTSuV2 strain from Guangdong province, two overlapped virus proteins were expressed from Escherichia coli. Then, purified recombinant TTSuV2 ORF1a and TTSuV2 ORF1ab proteins were used as the antigens in the Western Blotting and ELISA assay., Results: The recombinant TTSuV2 ORF1a and TTSuV2 ORF1ab proteins were identified with the special tag monoclonal antibody. The results of the ELISA tests shown that there were significant relationships between two groups of dates from the recombinant TTSuV2 ORF1a and TTSuV2 ORF1ab proteins antigenic assay. The results of the following Western Blotting assay indicated that the TTSuV2-specific IgG antibodies were contained in pig sera., Conclusion: The truncated TTSuV2 ORF1a protein (positions 168 to 346 corresponding to TTSuV2 GDIMA1) contains important B cell epitopes which can stimulate immune system antibody secretion. The truncated TTSuV2 ORF1a protein could be effective in TTSuV2 immunodiagnosis.

Streptococcus suis is an emerging zoonotic pathogen causing severe infections in pigs and humans. In previous studies, 33 serotypes of S. suis have been identified using serum agglutination. Here, we describe a novel S. suis strain, CZ130302, isolated from an outbreak of acute piglet meningitis in eastern China. Strong pathogenicity of meningitis caused by strain CZ130302 was reproduced in the BALB/c mouse model. The strain showed a high fatality rate (8/10), higher than those for known virulent serotype 2 strains P1/7 (1/10) and 9801 (2/10). Cell adhesion assay results with bEnd.3 and HEp2 cells showed that CZ130302 was significantly close to P1/7 and 9801. Both the agglutination test and its complementary test showed that strain CZ130302 had no strong cross-reaction with the other 33 S. suis serotypes. The multiplex PCR assays revealed no specified bands for all four sets used to detect the other 33 serotypes. In addition, genetic analysis of the whole cps gene clusters of all serotypes was performed in this study. The results of comparative genomics showed that the cps gene cluster of CZ130302, which was not previously reported, showed no homology to the gene sequences of the other strains. Especially, the wzy, wzx, and acetyltransferase genes of strain CZ130302 are phylogenetically distinct from strains of the other 33 serotypes. Therefore, this study suggested that strain CZ130302 represents a novel variant serotype of S. suis (designated serotype Chz) which has a high potential to be virulent and associated with meningitis in animals., (Copyright © 2015, American Society for Microbiology.
