The experiment was to investigate the effect of replacement of soybean by whole-plant fermented hybrid paper mulberry on growth performance, carcass traits and meat quality of finishing pigs. A total of 48 healthy three-way crossbred pigs weighing (60.53±2.42) kg were randomly divided into four groups, with three replicates in each group and four pigs in each replicate. The pigs in control group were fed with basic diet, group Ⅰ, group Ⅱ and group Ⅲ used 4%, 6% and 8% whole plant fermented hybrid paper mulberry instead of soybean meal, respectively. The pre-test period was 10 d, and the formal test period was 45 d. The results showed that compared with control group, the average daily gain and average daily feed intake of fattening pigs in group Ⅱ and group Ⅲ were significantly reduced (P<0.05). Compared with control group, the backfat thickness of finishing pigs in group Ⅱ and group Ⅲ was significantly reduced (P<0.05), and the eye muscle area of finishing pigs in each test group was significantly increased (P<0.05). Compared with control group, the water power of pork system in group Ⅱ and group Ⅲ was significantly decreased (P<0.05), and the drip loss was significantly increased (P<0.05), the cooking loss in group Ⅲwas significantly decreased (P<0.05), and shear force was significantly increased (P<0.05). The intramuscular fat content and protein content in each test group was significantly increased (P<0.05). The study indicates that 4% whole plant fermented hybrid paper mulberry substitute of soybean meal in diet can improve the carcass traits and meat quality of finishing pigs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Evidence‐based medical practices for pet pigs are needed. EldonCard is a human blood‐typing card shown to be rapid and reliable in identifying blood phenotypes of pet pigs. The objective of this study was to validate EldonCard by determining its reliability, reproducibility, and robustness for its routine use in the clinical setting. Key Findings: Twenty‐four venous blood samples from pet pigs were collected for a prospective in vitro study. Blood genotypes ("EAAA0" and "EAA00") were identified in 15 samples via polymerase chain reaction (PCR). All samples were phenotyped ("A," "Aweak," and "0" or "–") via EldonCard. Kappa (κ) statistics measured the level of agreement between 2 raters, and between EldonCard and PCR. McNemar's test determined if an association between the blood types and EldonCard or PCR exists, with significance at P < 0.05. Agreement between raters and methods was perfect (60/60 [100%], κ:1, P < 0.001; 15/15 [100%], κ:1, P < 0.001). There was no difference in the proportions of blood groups based on method. Significance: In conjunction with previous data, EldonCard is a rapid, accurate, reliable, precise, and robust in‐clinic blood‐typing method for the A0 system of pet pigs. With the advent of the era of big data, data mining methods show their powerful information mining ability in various fields, seeking the association information hidden in the data, which is convenient for people to make scientific decisions. This paper analyses the butterfly effect in the agricultural product industry chain from the perspective of producer and consumer by using multidimensional time and space theory and proposes a new price forecasting method. We consider that the price change of agricultural products is not only affected by the balance of market supply and demand but also by the factors of time and space. Taking the pig industry chain of Sichuan Province as an example, this paper explores and excavates the data from 2010 to 2020 in the time dimension. Interestingly, we found that the price changes in pork in the market are generally highly correlated with the prices of slaughtered pigs, piglets a few weeks ago and the prices of multiple feed a few months ago. Based on the precise time-space factors, we improved the price forecasting model, greatly improved the accuracy of price prediction, and proved the effectiveness of multidimensional spatiotemporal association mining. As the media have continued to pay increasing attention to pig epidemic events, some local pig epidemic events may have a large degree of negative impact on the pork market and the whole pig industry chain, leading to pork price fluctuations. Strengthening pig epidemic control, monitoring media reporting sentiment, and stabilizing pork price fluctuations are important measures to improve the economy and people's livelihood. This paper sets out to identify the relationship between the negative media sentiment about the pig epidemic and the market risk of pork prices within a setting with pig epidemic risk. Based on the provincial panel data of China from January 2011 to December 2022, this paper uses the spatial panel Durbin model to investigate the impact of negative media sentiment about the pig epidemic on pork price fluctuations from the perspective of local and spillover effects, and further discusses the mechanism of consumer sentiment. The empirical results show that: (1) The negative media sentiment about the pig epidemic significantly exacerbates pork price fluctuations, and there is a single threshold effect, which is weakened after crossing the threshold value. (2) The negative media sentiment about the pig epidemic has a significant positive spillover effect on pork price fluctuations, showing the characteristics of "being a neighbor". The spatial spillover effect shows a significant spatial attenuation feature and an inverted U-shaped change with the inflection point at 1400 km. (3) The effect is related to the heterogeneity of media reputation. The local aggravation effect of local media's negative sentiment on pork price fluctuations is greater than that of central media and information network platforms. In terms of the spatial spillover effect, the negative sentiment of the information network platforms has the strongest effect on the aggravation of pork price fluctuations in neighboring regions. (4) The mechanism study finds that the negative media sentiment about the pig epidemic positively affects pork price fluctuations through the path of "consumer sentiment". Therefore, this research recommends that the government department should strengthen the supervision of media sentiment about the pig epidemic and reasonably guide consumer sentiment to stabilize the pork market. Identifying individual pigs is crucial for efficient breeding, health management, and disease control in modern farming. Traditional animal face identification methods are labor-intensive and prone to inaccuracies, while existing CNN-based pig face recognition models often struggle with high computational demands, large sizes, and reliance on extensive labeled data, which limit their practical application. This paper addresses these challenges by proposing a novel, decoupled approach to pig face recognition that separates detection from identification. This strategy employs a detection model as a pre-processing step, significantly reducing the need for extensive re-annotation for new datasets. Additionally, the paper introduces a method that integrates offline knowledge distillation with a lightweight pig face recognition model, aiming to build an efficient and embedding-friendly system. To achieve these objectives, the study constructs a small-scale, high-quality pig face detection dataset consisting of 1500 annotated images from a selection of 20 pigs. An independent detection model, trained on this dataset, then autonomously generates a large-scale pig face recognition dataset with 56 pig classes. In the face recognition stage, a robust teacher model guides the student model through a distillation process informed by a knowledge distillation loss, enabling the student model to learn relational features from the teacher. Experimental results confirm the high accuracy of the pig face detection model on the small-scale detection dataset and the ability to generate a large-scale dataset for pig face recognition on unlabeled data. The recognition experiments further verify that the distilled lightweight model outperforms its non-distilled counterparts and approaches the performance of the teacher model. Purpose: The purpose of this paper, applying concepts in the plant-based food sector, is a focus on the competitive rival trap for startup firms, with their initial advantage for under-served market segments, only to be overtaken by scale, speed, and brands of incumbent brand firms. As a case study of industry transformation, the food production sector illustrates how organizational innovation brings new forms of rivalry, from the farm gate to the kitchen plate. As a result, startups face a rivalry trap, if unable to scale quickly, as incumbents reframe their strategic response with startup acquisitions, corporate incubators or alliance partnerships consumer demand. Design/methodology/approach: This paper outlines the features of precision agriculture, a new paradigm for agriculture and food production, requiring new competences and skillsets in the protein revolution, including issues like virus, bacteria and the molecular structure of food groups, animal breeding and veterinary medicine. Plant-based foods is used as a case study for startups and the rivalry trap. Findings: The emergence of plant-based foods is a case study of market opportunity and creative destruction, where the potential market varies from $25bn to $72bn, and growing faster in the dairy sector. However, food incumbents bring new strategic responses and a rivalry trap, where startups must gain scale quickly in capabilities, talent and marketing prowess, often exploiting demand in market niches unimpeded by incumbent rivals. Research limitations/implications: Startups in biological sciences face massive challenges to increase scale and scope, even with unique intellectual property. Practical implications: Startup firms need multidisciplinary management teams with a global outlook. Social implications: Plant-based foods form part of the protein revolution but face challenges of scale, cost competitiveness and taste, despite advantages for climate mitigation. The live weight of pigs has always been an important reference index for growth monitoring and the health status of breeding pigs. An accurate weight acquisition of breeding pigs is the key to guide the scientific feeding of breeding pigs and improve economic benefits. Compared with the traditional contact measurement method, the non-contact weighing method of live pigs can greatly reduce human–pig contact and measurement errors. In this paper, a deep neural network is constructed which can automatically and accurately predict the weight of live pigs by measuring multiple body parameters. Because of the good generalization ability of the radial basis function (RBF) neural network and the better fitting ability of multilayer network than the traditional single-layer network, this paper introduces a full-connection model in the middle layer, connects multiple RBF layers, builds a multilayer RBF network, and invents the automatic learning method of pig weight based on the network. In this method, the body length, body height, body width, and five other body parameters are input, after normalization, into the multilayer RBF network model for training, and resultingly the network gives a predicted weight. Among our 4721 live pigs, there are 2452 sows and 2269 boars, among which 2000 samples of sows are randomly selected as training sets and 452 samples as test sets; 1930 samples of boars are taken as training sets and 339 samples as test sets. The test shows that the performance of the network structure is as follows: R2 is 0.63, MAE is 1.85, RMSE is 5.74, and MAPE is 1.68. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The sound of the pig is one of its important signs, which can reflect various states such as hunger, pain or emotional state, and directly indicates the growth and health status of the pig. Existing speech recognition methods usually start with spectral features. The use of spectrograms to achieve classification of different speech sounds, while working well, may not be the best approach for solving such tasks with single-dimensional feature input. Based on the above assumptions, in order to more accurately grasp the situation of pigs and take timely measures to ensure the health status of pigs, this paper proposes a pig sound classification method based on the dual role of signal spectrum and speech. Spectrograms can visualize information about the characteristics of the sound under different time periods. The audio data are introduced, and the spectrogram features of the model input as well as the audio time-domain features are complemented with each other and passed into a pre-designed parallel network structure. The network model with the best results and the classifier were selected for combination. An accuracy of 93.39% was achieved on the pig speech classification task, while the AUC also reached 0.99163, demonstrating the superiority of the method. This study contributes to the direction of computer vision and acoustics by recognizing the sound of pigs. Purpose: African Swine Fever (ASF), one of the world's most contagious and deadly livestock infectious diseases, was introduced to Vietnam in 2019 and has since become one of the biggest threats to the country's porcine industry. To this day, very little is known about the major drivers of ASF outbreaks - in particular, the generally low levels of biosecurity found on smallholder farms in Vietnam. The main objective of this paper is to assess the knowledge disparities, diverging attitudes, and different practices among smallholder pig farming households that influence the adoption, implementation, and continuation of ASF biosecurity measures in Vietnam. Research Method: Structured questionnaire surveys were conducted to 183 smallholder pig farming households in December 2020 in four districts of Dong Nai, the largest pig production province in Vietnam. The determinants of farmers' knowledge and attitude toward ASF were estimated using an ordinal probit regression; a panel-data probit regression approximated the probability of farmers adopting biosecurity measures. Findings: It was found that, prior to the first outbreaks of ASF in Vietnam in 2019, surveyed pig farmers generally had an inadequate level of knowledge about ASF to be able to successfully prevent and control the disease's spread. Rather, farmers only managed to significantly improve their understanding of ASF after outbreaks had begun. Model estimates indicate that a better understanding of ASF ultimately helped improve farmers' attitudes toward ASF biosecurity measures. Additionally, farmers with previous experience in dealing with other livestock infectious disease outbreaks were, in most cases, found to be more willing to implement ASF biosecurity measures. Together, deeper understanding of ASF and more positive attitudes towards ASF prevention and control measures contributed to an overall increase in the likelihood of farmers adopting and implementing appropriate ASF biosecurity practices. This paper pioneers a novel exploration of environmental impacts in livestock farming, focusing on pig farming's intersection with climate change and sustainability. It emphasizes the transformative potential of data-driven Artificial Intelligence (AI) methodologies, specifically the Internet of Things (IoT) and multimodal data analysis, in promoting equitable and sustainable food systems. The study observes five pigs aged 86 to 108 days using a tripartite sensor that records heart rate, respiration rate, and accelerometer data. The unique experimental design alternates between periods of isolation during feeding and subsequent pairing, enabling the investigation of stress-induced changes. Key inquiries include discerning patterns in heart rate data during isolation versus paired settings, fluctuations in respiration rates, and behavioral shifts induced by isolation or pairing. The study also explores the potential detection of gait abnormalities, correlations between pigs' age and their gait or activity patterns, and the evolution of pigs' walking abilities with age. The paper scrutinizes accelerometer data to detect activity changes when pigs are paired, potentially indicating increased stress or aggression. It also examines the adaptation of pigs to alternating isolation and pairing over time and how their heart rate, respiration rate, and activity data reflect this process. The study considers other significant variables, such as time of day and isolation duration, affecting the pigs' physiological parameters. Sensor data are further utilized to identify behavioral patterns during periods of feeding, isolation, or pairing. In the process of pig growth, key biological indicators, especially body condition scoring can accurately reflect the body condition of pigs, which has great essentiality. However, the existing manual scoring is time-consuming and labor-intensive and is readily influenced by the operator's subjective, resulting in large deviations. At present, the automatic measurement network for pig body condition scoring has not been popularized, so it is necessary to research and develop an automatic, efficient and accurate pig body condition scoring (BCS) algorithm. We extracted a total of 21,943 rear and upper images of 1674 pigs from videos in the piggery and then devised an automatic labeling method for the dataset. After being scored and processed by professionals, the dataset is fed into a YOLOX-based improved object detection and measurement network. In order to further improve the BCS estimation accuracy, we introduce an attention mechanism in the measurement network and design a dynamic loss weight optimizer. Compared with the basic YOLOX network, the improved network has got promising test results. We conduct experiments on 380 pictures completely independent of the training set. The model experiment result demonstrates that the accuracy rate of the pig body condition scoring algorithm proposed in this paper can achieve a AP of 80.06%. After deployed on the jetson NX, the accuracy of model drops by only 1.53%, and the inference speed is able to reach 29FPS. This means that it have access to be applied to actual pig breeding. Traits such as meat quality and composition are becoming valuable in modern pork production; however, they are difficult to include in genetic evaluations because of the high phenotyping costs. Combining genomic information with multiple‐trait indirect selection with cheaper indicator traits is an alternative for continued cost‐effective genetic improvement. Additionally, gut microbiome information is becoming more affordable to measure using targeted rRNA sequencing, and its applications in animal breeding are becoming relevant. In this paper, we investigated the usefulness of microbial information as a correlated trait in selecting meat quality in swine. This study incorporated phenotypic data encompassing marbling, colour, tenderness, loin muscle and backfat depth, along with the characterization of gut (rectal) microbiota through 16S rRNA sequencing at three distinct time points of the animal's growth curve. Genetic progress estimation and cross‐validation were employed to evaluate the utility of utilizing host genomic and gut microbiota information for selecting expensive‐to‐record traits in crossbred individuals. Initial steps involved variance components estimation using multiple‐trait models on a training dataset, where the top 25 associated operational taxonomic units (OTU) for each meat quality trait and time point were included. The second step compared the predictive ability of multiple‐trait models incorporating different numbers of OTU with single‐trait models in a validation set. Results demonstrated the advantage of including genomic information for some traits, while in some instances, gut microbial information proved advantageous, namely, for marbling and pH. The study suggests further investigation into the shared genetic architecture between microbial features and traits, considering microbial data's compositional and high‐dimensional nature. Simple Summary: Pig diarrhoea is one of the most frequent health problem in modern production, which can be associated with high mortality, decreased growth rates and an increase in treatment costs. The solution for an enteric disease requires a diagnosis which is based on diagnostic criteria, that must be respected to be reliable. The veterinary practitioner has the responsibility of making a final diagnosis, and based on this to make decisions concerning the management of swine health problems. The veterinary diagnostic laboratory can be an important support providing technical assistance in performing laboratory testing and consultancy activity. The aim of this paper is to focus on the diagnostic approach of enteric disorders in pigs, from sampling to the aetiological diagnosis, taking into consideration the diagnostic criteria for the various diseases and the methods considered to be the best choice for diagnosis. The diagnosis of enteric disorders in pigs is extremely challenging, at any age. Outbreaks of enteric disease in pigs are frequently multifactorial and multiple microorganisms can co-exist and interact. Furthermore, several pathogens, such as Clostridium perfrigens type A, Rotavirus and Lawsonia intracellularis, may be present in the gut in the absence of clinical signs. Thus, diagnosis must be based on a differential approach in order to develop a tailored control strategy, considering that treatment and control programs for enteric diseases are pathogen-specific. Correct sampling for laboratory analyses is fundamental for the diagnostic work-up of enteric disease in pigs. For example, histology is the diagnostic gold standard for several enteric disorders, and sampling must ensure the collection of representative and optimal intestinal samples. Pork production is hugely impacted by the health and breeding of pigs. Analyzing the eating pattern of pigs helps in optimizing the supply chain management with a healthy breeding environment. Monitoring the feed intake of pigs in a barn provides information about their eating habits, behavioral patterns, and surrounding environment, which can be used for further analysis to monitor growth in pigs and eventually contribute to the quality and quantity of meat production. In this paper, we present a novel method to estimate the number of pigs taking in feed by considering the pig's posture. In order to solve problems arising from using the pig's posture, we propose an algorithm to match the pig's head and the corresponding pig's body using the major-and-minor axis of the pig detection box. In our experiment, we present the detection performance of the YOLOv5 model according to the anchor box, and then we demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms previous methods. We therefore measure the number of pigs taking in feed over a period of 24 h and the number of times pigs consume feed in a day over a period of 30 days, and observe the pig's feed intake pattern. Simple Summary: Yeast protein feeds have the potential to replace other protein source feeds. Accordingly, in this paper, we used the industrial and agricultural byproducts of glucose master liquor and corn steep liquor as substrates, and utilized Candida utilis for fermentation. Firstly, the medium components of yeast protein feed were optimized, and then the optimized yeast protein feed was fed to weaned Dongliao black piglets; the feeding effect was analyzed using 16S rDNA and metabolomics. We found that Candida utilis feed has no adverse effects on the growth performance of the pigs and that it improves blood lipids and other indicators. A total of 10 plasma metabolites were correlated with 27 genera of bacteria, as revealed by the results of the combined multi-omics analysis, which were mainly enriched in the pathways of primary bile acid metabolism, histidine metabolism, and tryptophan metabolism. The results show that Candida utilis feed can maintain the growth performance of the pigs and enhance their immunity and maintenance of gut flora homeostasis; this likely occurs through amino acid metabolism. In this experiment, glucose master liquor and corn steep liquor were used as carbon and nitrogen sources, and Candida utilis was used as a strain to ferment yeast feed. The OD value and number of yeast cells were used as response values to optimize the medium components of the yeast feed through a response surface methodology. The optimal medium components were a glucose master liquor concentration of 8.3%, a corn steep liquor concentration of 1.2%, and a KH2PO4 concentration of 0.14%. Under this condition of fermentation, the OD value was 0.670 and the number of yeast cells was 2.72 × 108/mL. Then, we fed Candida utilis feed to Dongliao black piglets, and the effects of the yeast feed on the piglets' growth performance, fecal microbiota, and plasma metabolic levels were investigated through 16S rDNA sequencing and metabolomics. In total, 120 black piglets with an average initial weight of 6.90 ± 1.28 kg were randomly divided into two groups. One group was fed the basic diet (the CON group), and the other was supplemented with 2.5% Candida utilis add to the basic diet (the 2.5% CU group). After a pre-feeding period, the formal experiments were performed for 21 days. The results showed that the addition of Candida utilis to the diet did not affect growth performance compared with the control group. Meanwhile, no significant differences were observed in the serum biochemical indices. However, piglets in the 2.5% CU group had a significantly altered fecal microbiota, with an increased abundance of Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Lactobacillus, and Muribaculaceae_unclassified. Regarding the plasma metabolome, the 12 differential metabolites detected were mainly enriched in the histidine, tryptophan, primary bile acid, and caffeine metabolic pathways. Regarding the integrated microbiome–metabolome analysis, differential metabolites correlated with fecal flora to variable degrees, but most of them were beneficial bacteria of Firmicutes. Collectively, dietary Candida utilis feed had no adverse effect on growth performance; however, it played an important role in regulating fecal flora and maintaining metabolic levels. Mangalitsa represents a breed of pigs specialized in fat production, which was exploited in our country until the 1950sHowever, the swine population of this breed decreased significantly thereafter due to the emergence of breeds and crossbreeds with much better productive performances, the advent of modern pig farms, and changes in the population's consumption habits. This paper presents data obtained from the analysis of the physicochemical properties of Mangalitsa pork, derived from pigs raised on a pig farm located in the northeastern region of the country, in Neamț County. The biological material required for this study consisted of Mangalitsa pigs: the red variety and the swallow-belly variety. To achieve the purpose of the study, samples were taken from 3 distinct body regions - neck, thigh, and loin - which were processed in a specialized laboratory. The pH of Mangalitsa pork measured 24 hours postslaughter ranged between 5.74 and 5.84, with the lowest dry matter values recorded for the batch of pigs from the red Mangalitsa variety. The protein content in the meat varied between 15.47% and 20.90%, depending on the anatomical region, while the lipid content showed wide variations, with the highest values in the Mangalitsa neck. The average values obtained for pH, dry matter, protein, and fat in Mangalitsa pork meat were within the optimal range for this breed, according to specialized literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The outbreak and continuous spread of African swine fever (ASF) since 2019 has caused serious losses to the Asian pig industry, the effective prevention and control of ASF is directly related to the stability of the pig industry. This paper evaluated the effects of ASF prevention and control measures, industrial support policies, and market regulations and proposes the recommendations for the optimizing the policies and measure of ASF control and pig industry stabilization in China by analyzing the situation of ASF in Southeast Asia, the causes of the outbreak, and the impact on the pig industry and market in Vietnam and the Philippines, the 2 biggest pig producers in the region. The results showed that the key factors contributing to the outbreak and ongoing spread of ASF in Vietnam and the Philippines were the challenge on the industry management for low scale, low biosecurity awareness, and transportation of large amounts of live pigs. Following the outbreak of ASF, the significant decreased in pork output, the sharp falled and rised of live pig prices, and the significant increased in pork imports as well as the significant transformation of pig industry chain were observed in both countries. By the reference of the prevention and control experiences of the two countries, China should increase the support on the small and medium-sized pig farms for the prevention and control of ASF to encourage their upgrading towards for modernization, accelerate the development of production scale level and organization level, improve the effect of epidemic prevention and control, strengthen the rural veterinary service system for the ability to prevent and control the major animal diseases, optimize the starting mechanism of governmental frozen pork storage to improve the effect of market intervention. Simple Summary: The authors' aim was to summarise the general concept and approach of the Hungarian National PRRS Eradication Program. However, limits on the length of the paper meant that many important points of the process could not be described in full detail. In some cases, previous publications were cited to guide the readers to a more detailed description of particular eradication parts. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is a widespread infectious disease that is currently a major cause of economic losses in pig production. In Hungary, a National PRRS Eradication Program has been introduced to attain a more efficient, economic, and competitive international market position. The program has been also approved by the EU, but the resulting legal obligations have imposed a burden on Hungarian producers to comply with EU competition rules. The implementation of the program has been carried out by the veterinary authorities with the consent of, continuous support from and monitoring conducted by organisations within the pig sector as well as a scientific committee. The PRRS eradication program in Hungary was based on a regional territorial principle and was compulsory for all pig holdings within the regions. In Hungary, large fattening farms operate as all-in/all-out or continuous flow systems. Large-scale breeding herds are predominantly farrow-to-finish types. Although its significance has decreased in recent decades, 20% of the Hungarian pig population is still kept on small (backyard) farms (<100 animals). All PRRSV-infected large-scale farms had to develop a unit-adapted eradication plan, including external and internal biosecurity measures, vaccinations, etc. It was crucial to render each fattening unit free of the disease, as fattening units play a significant role in spreading the virus within the country. The eradication efforts mainly implemented were depopulation–repopulation methods, but on some farms a testing and removal method has been used. As the eradication progressed over the years, the introduction of infected fattening pigs was restricted. Thanks to these measures, Hungarian large-scale fattening farms became PRRSV-free by the end of 2018. The PRRSV-free status of small-scale herds was achieved by the end of 2015 and was maintained between 2016 and 2021. By 31 December 2021, all breeding pigs in large-scale farms in Hungary were free of wild-type PRRS virus. By 31 March 2022, the total pig population of the country, including all backyard farms and fattening units, achieved PRRSV-free status. The future goal is to ensure and maintain the PRRSV-free status of Hungary via strict import regulations of live animals combined with the continuous and thorough screening of incoming and resident herds for the presence of the virus. Simple Summary: This paper uses the data of fixed observation points in the country's rural areas, the Data Envelopment Analysis model is used to calculate the production efficiency of pig farmers, which shows the efficiency level of pig breeding in the country. Then, the Tobit model is used to analyze that epidemic prevention and control has a positive effect on production efficiency. Finally, the threshold regression model was used to analyze the results: the effect of disease control on production efficiency was different under different breeding scales. Epidemic disease prevention plays a critical role in ensuring the healthy development of livestock farming, and the subjective willingness of breeders can be affected by the cost of epidemic disease prevention. To correct the misconception that farmers regard the cost of disease control as an ineffective cost, and to promote the healthy development of the pig breeding industry, our study employed the data envelopment analysis super-efficiency model and panel threshold regression model to evaluate the combination of the cost of epidemic disease prevention and swine productivity using data collected from 1998–2018 across 30 provinces in China. The following results were obtained. (1) The cost of epidemic disease prevention generated a non-linear on swine productivity when the swine farming scale was limited; (2) When the number of animals at the beginning of the year was less than 6.0002, swine productivity was impacted negatively; (3) When the number of animals at the beginning of the year ranged between 6.0002 and 12.9994, the impact was insignificant; (4) A strong correlation was observed between the expenses of epidemic disease prevention and animal productivity when the number of animals at the beginning of the year exceeded 12.9994. These results indicate that publicity should be enhanced to elucidate the combination of epidemic disease prevention and swine productivity among breeders. In addition, the government should introduce relevant policies to encourage the development of large-scale pig farming, such as subsidies for the construction of large-scale farms and insurance. Accurate identification of pig cough is essential for comprehensive monitoring and diagnosis of the respiratory health status of pigs. It contributes to stress-free animal health management, reduces pig mortality and improves the economics of farming. Creating a representative multisource signal signature of pig cough is a critical step in achieving automatic recognition of pig cough. For this reason, in this paper, we propose a feature fusion classification method that combines the spectrogram deep features and thermal image deep features to be fed into a support vector machine (SVM) classifier to accomplish cough classification. First, we use a time–frequency transformation algorithm to convert a one-dimensional cough sound signal into a two-dimensional acoustic spectrogram. Then, the corresponding heterogeneous deep features are extracted from the cough spectrogram and thermal image by fine-tuning Lenet-5 and a customized CoughRNet shallow convolutional neural network. Finally, we employ an early fusion technique to align and splice the extracted heterogeneous deep features and feed them into an SVM for the automatic classification task of pig cough. Our study evaluates the classification performance, recognition speed and model size of the proposed deep feature fusion classification network with satisfactory results. Experimental results show that the method achieves 99.77% accuracy in pig cough recognition. This further demonstrates the effectiveness of combining abstract heterogeneous sound and thermal image deep features as a method for automated detection of pig respiratory health. Black pork is a very popular pork product in the market. Differing from ordinary large white pigs, black pork has high nutritional value, abundant unsaturated fatty acids, and high contents of inosinic acid and proteins, etc., exhibiting advantages such as rich mouthfeel and unique flavor thereby gaining high consumer popularity. There are many black pig breeds in China, and the flavors of pig breeds vary with different regions. On the basis of summarizing the general procedure for analyzing the flavor substances of meat products, the volatile flavor substances and tasting substances of the black pigs from seven regions, Dingyuan, Hebei (Baoxu), Laiwu, Yunnan, Beijing, Shanxi and Qinghai (Bamei), were analyzed and summarized in this paper, with the white pig as a reference. The key flavor substances of the black pork samples from different regions were determined. Based on the formation pathways of aroma-active and taste-active substances of the black pork, the main reasons responsible for the flavor differences among the black pigs from different regions were analyzed. Future research directions were put forward, so as to provide a theoretical reference for selective development of specific black pork processed products and value exploration of specific black pork varieties in certain regions. The EU's ambition to establish economy-wide climate neutrality by 2050 requires challenging transformations in many economic activities. This paper aims to investigate the nexus of structural changes and greenhouse gas emissions (GHGEs) in an important sector of the livestock system, namely pig farming, during the period of 2010–2020 and to discuss the main directions of GHGE reduction. The academic novelty of this contribution is characterised by a combination of the shift-share and cluster analysis that allows for the investigation of the evolution phenomenon, applying the sustainability prism in order to understand the nexus between pig farming and the livestock system, as well as combining the national and EU levels. Results suggest that the steep decline in the number of holdings and a moderate reduction in livestock units (LSUs) on farms do not bring tangible GHGE reduction results. The cluster analysis confirms that pig farming systems in pre-2004 member states, except for Finland and Greece, demonstrated positive developments or a lower decline in holdings with pigs and live swine LSUs compared to other countries, while in the dominant share of post-2003 member states, the GHGE reduction rate was higher. This research identifies a reduction in the pig population, improvement in feed production and the development of related supply chains, and changes in manure management and utilisation as the main directions of GHGE reduction; however, the identified clusters are related with different potentials of GHGE reduction when applying the aforementioned measures. Recommendations include the development and support of actions that focus on GHGE reduction from swine manure and contribute to the establishment of a circular economy in the EU. The performance of live weight prediction was assessed based on the evaluation criteria: the coefficient of determination, the root-mean-squared error, the mean absolute error, and the mean absolute percentage error. The performance measures in our experiments were also validated through 10-fold cross-validation to provide a robust model for predicting the pig live weight. Simple Summary: African swine fever, as an acute, contact-transmitted infection, has a very high mortality and infectivity, and there are no effective drugs that can treat the disease. Therefore, it is necessary to take biosecurity measures in time at the beginning of the disease outbreak. In this article, media coverage is introduced into the African swine fever model, and the results indicate that real-time media coverage of the African swine fever epidemic is beneficial for breeders to scientifically prevent the spread of the epidemic in a timely manner. Through the evaluation of specific prevention and control measures, we suggest that timely disinfection and sterilization measures taken by breeding personnel after receiving relevant reports of the swine fever epidemic can effectively control the spread of the disease. African swine fever is a highly contagious virus that causes pig disease. Its onset process is short, but the mortality rate is as high as 100%. There are still no effective drugs that have been developed to treat African swine fever, and prevention and control measures are currently the best means to avoid infection in pig herds. In this paper, two fractional order mathematical models with media coverage are constructed to describe the transmission of African swine fever. The first model is a basic model with media coverage, and no control measures are considered. For this model, the reproduction number is obtained by using the next generation matrix method. Then, the sufficient conditions for the existence and stability of two equilibriums are obtained. Based on the first model, the second model is established incorporating two control measures. By using Pontryagin's maximal principle, the optimal control solution is derived. After that, some numerical simulations are performed for the two models to verify the theoretical results. Both the qualitative analysis and numerical results indicate that timely media coverage combined with disinfection control measures is crucial to preventing the spread of disease. Simple Summary: During pig production, organic chromium is usually added to the feed to supplement the chromium needed for pig growth and metabolism. However, different types of organic chromium have different effects on the addition period and dosage. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of adding organic chromium in pig feed by means of meta-analysis. The results show that organic chromium can improve the average daily gain and average daily intake of pigs. At the same time, the effect of adding in the weaning stage is better than that in the growing and finishing stage. Many factors influence the effects of exogenous organic chromium (EO-Cr) on the growth performance and carcass qualities of weaned and growing-finishing pigs, such as pig growth stages, types of EO-Cr, period of supplementation, and farm management. However, it is challenging to comprehensively consider all factors in one study. To solve this problem, we searched all relative literature published from 1 January 2000 to 1 January 2023, to systematically analyze and review the effects of EO-Cr on pig growth performance and carcass qualities via meta-analysis. Thirty-five papers were filtered and analyzed, which involved 4366 pigs. The results showed that, for weaned piglets, EO-Cr diets significantly increased the average daily gain (ADG, p < 0.001) and average daily feed intake (ADFI, p = 0.022) but reduced the feed–gain ratio (p = 0.004). In addition, for growing-finishing pigs, EO-Cr supplementation significantly increased the ADG (p < 0.001), carcass lean ratio (p = 0.020), and loin muscle area (p < 0.001), but had no significant effect on the ADFI (p = 0.071), feed–gain ratio (p = 0.692), dressing percent (p = 0.989), or back fat thickness (p = 0.142). Moreover, the effect of EO-Cr was greater in weaned piglets than in growing-finishing pigs. In terms of the dose effect of the supplement, chromium nicotinate is the most suitable EO-Cr type for weaned piglets with an optimal dosage range of 0.125–0.150 mg/kg. On the other hand, chromium picolinate is the most suitable EO-Cr type for growing-finishing pigs with an optimal dosage range of 0.250–0.300 mg/kg. The paper aimed to present the situation of the mountain area in Romania between 2017 and 2019. This paper is based on statistical data provided by the National Sanitary-Veterinary Authority and for Food Safety and also by the National Institute of Statistics. These were processed within the National Agency of the Mountain Area in the following indicators: number of counties with mountain area, number of Administrative-Territorial Units in the mountain area, number of inhabitants in the mountain area, total area of the mountain area (km2), area of pastures and meadows in the mountain area (ha), the number of animals in the mountain area (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs). Compared with 2017, the number of animals, in 2019, registered significant decreases, which leads to negative effects on maintenance of permanent grassland areas in the mountain area, milk and meat production from animals, milk processing activities, respectively meat and, implicitly, reduced possibilities of developing farms in the mountain area. Background: Gut microbial composition plays an important role in numerous traits, including immune response. Integration of host genomic information with microbiome data is a natural step in the prediction of complex traits, although methods to optimize this are still largely unexplored. In this paper, we assess the impact of different modelling strategies on the predictive capacity for six porcine immunocompetence traits when both genotype and microbiota data are available. Methods: We used phenotypic data on six immunity traits and the relative abundance of gut bacterial communities on 400 Duroc pigs that were genotyped for 70 k SNPs. We compared the predictive accuracy, defined as the correlation between predicted and observed phenotypes, of a wide catalogue of models: reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS), Bayes C, and an ensemble method, using a range of priors and microbial clustering strategies. Combined (holobiont) models that include both genotype and microbiome data were compared with partial models that use one source of variation only. Results: Overall, holobiont models performed better than partial models. Host genotype was especially relevant for predicting adaptive immunity traits (i.e., concentration of immunoglobulins M and G), whereas microbial composition was important for predicting innate immunity traits (i.e., concentration of haptoglobin and C-reactive protein and lymphocyte phagocytic capacity). None of the models was uniformly best across all traits. We observed a greater variability in predictive accuracies across models when microbiability (the variance explained by the microbiome) was high. Clustering microbial abundances did not necessarily increase predictive accuracy. Conclusions: Gut microbiota information is useful for predicting immunocompetence traits, especially those related to innate immunity. Modelling microbiome abundances deserves special attention when microbiability is high. Clustering microbial data for prediction is not recommended by default. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: In 2008, researchers described a new virus, porcine kobuvirus (PKV). Some viruses are very harmful, while others infect animals without having any significance for their health. Some researchers have suspected that porcine kobuvirus causes gastrointestinal disease (e.g., diarrhea) in pigs. Therefore, this paper tried to answer the question: Is porcine kobuvirus a cause of gastrointestinal disease in young pigs? A systematic literature review was conducted, meaning that a database was searched for all reports of research studies investigating kobuvirus in pigs. In general, there was not much research of good quality that could possibly answer the question. Therefore, the study concluded that there is a lack of good evidence supporting the idea that PKV causes gastrointestinal disease. The absence of such documentation does not mean that we can conclude the opposite: that PKV is not causing gastrointestinal disease. That said, the sparse research available did indicate that PKV has a limited ability to cause diarrhea. Since porcine kobuvirus (PKV) was first described in 2008, researchers have speculated whether the virus is of clinical importance. This systematic literature review answers the question: Is porcine kobuvirus a cause of gastrointestinal disease in young pigs? A case-control study showed that PKV was not associated with neonatal diarrhea. A cohort study suffered from a very small sample size (n = 5), and in an experimental trial, the effect of PKV inoculation could not be separated from the effect of being inoculated with porcine epidemic diarrhea virus. In 13 poorly defined observational studies, more than 4000 young pigs had been assigned a diarrhea status and their feces analyzed for PKV. Unfortunately, the studies lacked well-characterized unbiased samples, and thus the strongest possible inference from these studies was that a very strong association between PKV and diarrhea is unlikely. PKV was commonly detected in non-diarrheic pigs, and this could indicate that PKV is not a sufficient cause in itself or that reinfection of individuals with some immunological protection due to previous infections is common. Conclusively, there is a lack of good evidence of PKV being a cause of gastrointestinal disease, but the sparse available evidence suggests that PKV is of limited clinical importance. The animal trades between farms and other livestock holdings form a complex livestock trade network. The movement of animals between trade actors plays an important role in the spread of infectious diseases among premises. Particularly, the outbreak of silent diseases that have no clinically obvious symptoms in the animal trade system should be diagnosed by taking special tests. In practice, the authorities regularly conduct examinations on a random number of farms to make sure that there was no outbreak in the system. However, these actions, which aim to discover and block a disease cascade, are yet far from the effective and optimum solution and often fail to prevent epidemics. A testing strategy is defined as making decisions about distributing the fixed testing budget N between farms/nodes in the network. In this paper, first, we apply different heuristics for selecting sentinel farms on real and synthetic pig-trade networks and evaluate them by simulating disease spreading via the SI epidemic model. Later, we propose a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) based testing strategy with the aim of early detection of outbreaks. The experimental results show that the proposed method can reasonably well decrease the size of the outbreak on both the realistic synthetic and real trade data. A targeted selection of an N / 52 fraction of nodes in the real pig-trade network based on the MCMC or simulated annealing can improve the performance of a baseline strategy by 89%. The best heuristic-based testing strategy results in a 75% reduction in the average size of the outbreak compared to that of the baseline testing strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble nutrient that maintains the health of animals. It can improve pig health via modulating calcium and phosphorus homeostasis, skeletal muscle development and the immune system. In recent years, the application of vitamin D3 and 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 in pigs has attracted the attention of scientists. VD can regulate the immune response of piglets, inhibit the infection of pathogenic microorganisms and relieve growth retardation, improve muscle quality through its strong antioxidant capacity, supplementation of VD in pregnancy and lactation diets can improve reproductive performance and lactation performance of sows and increase blood levels of 25(OH)D3 in offspring piglets. In the paper, the application effect of VD in the production of piglets, growing-finishing pigs and breeding pigs was reviewed, which provided reference for the application of VD in the actual production of pigs. Simple Summary: This study attempts to analyse the technical and economic data of Iberian-breed pig farms that operate using two differentiated production models, i.e., the cebo or indoor fodder-fed pig production system where the animals are reared indoors, and the cebo campo or outdoor fodder-fed pig production system where the animals are reared outdoors with access to outdoor areas also during the fattening stage. The paper shows the study of three farms from each system with three batches per farm, where the data are obtained by way of a survey directly carried out with the farmers. Despite the conversion ratios being higher in the outdoor system, they do not translate into a significant increase in feed costs. However, labour costs are higher in the outdoor than in the indoor system. Gross margins are higher in the outdoor than in the indoor system, mainly due to the difference in incomes. Such incomes can vary temporarily subject to market prices. The outbreak of COVID-19 meant a sudden decrease in the gross profit, as the incomes went down and the costs remained at the same level. Crisis situations usually cause a reduction of the retail prices and a decrease in the profits. The current Quality Standard regulating the Iberian pig provides for various differentiated farming systems subject to the type of management implemented and the breed of the pigs. This study attempts to analyse the differences between two of these production systems, i.e., the outdoor and the indoor rearing systems by comparing the main technical and economic factors of six farms, three operating under each system, in order to ascertain the most profitable production system. This analysis is based on the information provided by the farm owners. It also evaluates the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak had on profitability. The results show that both systems spend the same resources on animal feed, which represents nearly 60% of the expense, with the price of purchase of piglets representing 30–32% of the total; however, there are differences in the cost of labour, which is higher in the outdoor variant. In economic terms, outdoor farms obtained a higher gross margin than indoor farms did. Although their production costs are higher, these are offset with larger incomes due to the higher market price of the pigs at the time of slaughter. Lastly, all the farms under study reveal large financial losses on account of COVID-19, given that there was a general decrease in the revenues due to the decrease in the selling price of the pigs, which seems to be the most determinant factor for the economic profits made by these kinds of farms. This paper attempts to study the age structure of the stock breeders of the Nâama region located in the west of Algeria, and to interpret the dynamics of the classes of these ages according to breeding techniques, to know the trend of this activity that characterizes the region of Nâama recognized for its pastoral vocation. Like the other Algerian steppes, the herders of the western regions suffer from a real upheaval that has strongly impacted their lifestyle and consequently their livestock systems, under the combined effect of a number of natural and anthropogenic factors in a political, economic and social context. In order to gather the information necessary for this work, we selected a representative sample of 364 livestock holders randomly distributed across the study area, from a total number of the targeted population estimated at 6.700 breeders, setting a margin of error of 5% and a confidence rate of 95%. It emerges that the mobility of herds is in clear decline, especially transhumance, giving way to practices which present interdependence between livestock breeding and land appropriation, where sedentarization, the intensification of livestock farming and its association with some agricultural practices follow a growing trend. Poultry and pig farming provide two important sources of domestic meat consumption. Pig breeding has not been an economically predictable sector of agriculture, and breeders often suffer financial losses. This has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the current war situation. For this reason, economical production has become even more important, a basic condition that can only appear in the most stress-free environment possible. An essential condition for the production of high-quality food raw materials is the supply of excellent fattening raw materials. However, heat stress during certain stages of pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, can significantly deteriorate the quality of these raw materials. Prediction models for estimating feed intake (FI) or metabolizable energy intake (MEI) of pigs are available in the literature. During the recent two decades, several reports have addressed the influence of heat stress on FI. The objectives of the present work were to validate the accuracy of prediction equations for estimating FI or MEI of pigs in the literature using data from heat stress experiments and to develop novel equations for estimating FI and MEI of pigs under thermoneutral or heat stress environment. A total of 123 data from 25 research papers measuring the effects of heat stress on FI of pigs published between 2001 and 2021 were used for the validation of previous equations and the development of novel equations. In the 25 papers, the thermoneutral temperature (T) ranged from 17 to 24℃ and the heat stress T ranged from 21 to 35℃. The body weight (BW) of pigs ranged from 19 to 119 kg. In the first validation study, the equation for estimating FI was evaluated: FI, g/day = -1,264 + 73.6×BW - 0.26×BW² + 117×T - 2.40×T² - 0.95×T×BW. The slope representing a linear bias did not differ from 0 but the intercept representing a mean bias was greater than 0 (109 ± 36; P < 0.01), meaning that the predicted mean underestimated the FI. In the second validation study, the equation for estimating MEI using equations for lower critical temperature (LCT) and fraction of MEI: LCT, ℃ = 17.9 - 0.0375×BW and fraction of MEI = 1 - 0.012914 × [T - (LCT + 3)] - 0.001179 × [T - (LCT + 3)]2. The slope representing a linear bias did not differ from 0 but the intercept representing a mean bias was greater than 0 (731 ± 68; P < 0.001), meaning that the predicted mean underestimated the MEI. A novel equation for estimating MEI under thermoneutral or heat stress environment was developed: MEI, kcal/day = 2,603 + 137×BW - 0.189×BW² - 38.4×T - 0.556×T² - 1.165×T×BW (P < 0.001; R² = 0.83). An equation for estimating fraction of MEI under thermoneutral or heat stress environment was also developed: fraction of MEI = 1 - 0.00677 × [T - (LCT + 3)] - 0.000668 × [T - (LCT + 3)]² (P < 0.001; R² = 0.98). In conclusion, previously published equations underestimate FI and MEI and novel equations for estimating MEI under thermoneutral or heat stress environment have been developed in the present work. Simple Summary: In this study, consumer preferences for pork produced using animal-welfare-enhancing farming strategies were assessed. In China, the demand for animal-friendly products is increasing, but so far, studies on consumer preferences for animal welfare farming attributes are limited. The objective of this study was to analyze consumer preferences for pork based on four animal welfare farming attributes, namely feed nutrition, living environment, health care, and activity space. The study employed a choice experiment approach. The survey covered 1274 pork consumers in Guangdong province, China. Our empirical results suggest that Chinese consumers were willing to pay an additional 2.359–10.477 CNY/500 g (5.27–23.39%) for animal welfare pork. Furthermore, there was significant heterogeneity in consumer preferences. China is the world's largest producer and consumer of pork. Since the outbreaks of African swine fever in 2018, China's pork imports have been constantly on the rise. The results can contribute to the optimization of pork production structures and marketing plans for stakeholders and can assist with the timely development of international competition strategies for animal-derived trade products. Consumption demands for pork produced by farms that employ strategies to improve animal welfare ("animal welfare pork") will be an important indicator for predicting domestic pig feeding standards and pork industry development. Simple Summary: Porcine parvovirus disease is an animal disease with a high infection rate that is wide spread in the world. Its spread and variants have a very serious impact on large-scale livestock economy. So far, there have been no reports on the infection and genetics of pig parvovirus in Tibetan pigs. This study was conducted to investigate and analyze the seroprevalence, regional distribution and risk factors responsible for porcine parvovirus in Tibetan pigs in Tibet. This study also contains an effective response and analysis of strategies made in the areas under investigation through the epidemic, distribution and risk factors inquiry of the virus. A total of 356 serum samples were collected from four counties in Tibet, and the anti-porcine parvovirus antibodies were detected by using the competitive ELISA kit. In this investigation, 324 (91.01%) of 356 serum samples were found to be positive for porcine parvovirus. Porcine parvovirus is also extremely widespread in Tibet, reaching a worrying seroprevalence that requires greater awareness of this disease by the operators in the swine sector. Possible measures to improve surveillance and monitoring of the disease should be considered. Porcine parvovirus (PPV) disease is a worldwide spread animal disease with high infection rate and serious impact on meat economy causing significant losses in livestock production. The purpose of this paper is to investigate and analyze the regional seroprevalence of PPV in Tibetan pigs in Tibet and evaluate risk factors related to the disease. A total of 356 serum samples of Tibetan pigs were collected from four counties and districts in Tibet, and anti-PPV antibodies were detected by using a commercial competitive ELISA. Our results show a seroprevalence of 91.01% (324 serum samples were found to be positive for anti-PPV antibodies). The positive rate among different district was 100%, 96.55%, 93.68% and 72.83%, respectively in the Mainling County, in Bayi district, Nang County and Bomê County. We found significant differences between different age and gender groups; particularly female animals show a seroprevalence of 96.03% while the males only 83.46%. From the perspective of the growth stage, our results indicate that subadults show a seroprevalence significative higher than other age groups (100%). This study describes for the first time the PPV seroprevalence among Tibetan pigs characterizing risk factors involved in its transmission and providing information to be taken into account for eventual surveillance or eradication plans. The paper presents the results of a study of long-term adaptation, management value and productivity of Large White sows of Hungarian origin in the conditions of steppe zone of Ukraine. It was found that Large White sows of Hungarian origin are characterized by high rates of long-term adaptation, management value and reproductive qualities. Thus, their age of life is 44.1 ± 1.97 months (Cv = 35.27%); the duration of breeding use is 32.8 ± 1.95 months (Cv = 46.91%); the index "level of adaptation" varies in the range from 5.48 to 27.20 points. Taking into account the intrabreed differentiation according to the index "level of adaptation", a significant difference between the groups of sows of class M + and M-was found according to the following indicators: "farrowing received", "live piglets in total, heads", "multifetation, heads", "nest weight during the weaning at the age of 28 days, kg". The indicator "livability of piglets before weaning at the age of 28-32 days, %" in the experimental groups of sows ranges from 90.1 to 94.4%. Sows from the category "high management value" exceeded peers from the category "low management value" in terms of "farrowing received", "live piglets in total, heads", "multifetation, heads", "nest weight during the weaning at the age of 28-32 days, kg" by 46.67% on average. The indicator "livability of piglets before weaning at the age of 28-32 days, %" in different management value groups of sows ranges from 91.3 to 100.0%. The maximum increase in additional products was obtained from sows which index "level of adaptation" ranges from 5.48 to 8.20 points (+4.99%), as well as from animals of the category "high management value" (+3.41 %), respectively. The pig industry occupies an extremely significant position in agriculture. The input cost, output income and the amount of pollution emitted by pig farming of different scales are unequal. It is of great practical importance to reduce pollutant emission by improving efficiency for the development of hog breeding industry in China. With the addition of undesirable output, this paper uses the Slack Based Measure- Metafrontier Malmquist Luenberger index model considering scale heterogeneity to explore the evolution characteristics of China's green total factor productivity of pig breeding (GTPB) based on the data of China's 17 major pig producing provinces from 2004 to 2018. The results indicate that: (1) From 2004 to 2018, China's large-scale GTPB is the highest, the medium-sized is the second, and the small-scale is the lowest. (2) In terms of regional distribution, China's GTPB in western region is the highest, in eastern region is the second, and in central region is the lowest. (3) China's GTPB shows efficiency growth and technological decline from 2004 to 2018. The pig breeding industry is generally fragile, which is greatly affected by emergencies. (4)The TGR of large-scale pig breeding is closest to 1, followed by middle-scale, and finally small-scale. In this paper, the issues of intensive cultivation of two-breed replacement gilts of Yorkshire x Landrace breeds and purebred pigs of the Yorkshire breed are considered. 4 groups of replacement gilts were selected for the study: two groups of two-breed replacement gilts and two groups of purebred pigs of the Yorkshire breed. The study was conducted at a large industrial pig breeding complex of Verdazernoprodukt LLC at the Ryazan region, the Russian Federation in the period between 2017 and 2020. The average daily gain was calculated from the moment the pigs entered the growth room from 2.5 to 7.5 months of age. The authors justify the importance of preparing replacement livestock for reproduction by the cycling method using trailer boars. The reproductive capacity of replacement gilts was evaluated by the first farrowing. As a result of the conducted study, it was determined that during the growing period it was necessary to strictly control the live weight gain of replacement gilts, to prevent sharp fluctuations in average daily gain. After 4 months of age, it is recommended to control the average daily gain in replacement gilts at the level of 500-600 g. It is also necessary to stimulate sexual heat in replacement gilts, starting from the age of 160 days, which contributes to the formation and readiness of replacement gilts for reproduction, with 3 to 4 full-fledged heat periods. Eliminating ultra-poverty has received particular attention of policymakers and scholars. The ultra-poor in mountainous regions often live on subsistence farming and natural resource extraction. One of the sustainable ways to support them is to find alternative livelihood options that reduce natural resource extraction and increase household income. During the last decades, Vietnam has reduced its poverty significantly. However, the ultra-poor still exist especially among ethnic minority groups in the northern mountains, increasing pressures on already degraded forest resources. This paper assessed the contribution of indigenous pig production to the welfare of ultra-poor ethnic minority households using the propensity score matching method and identified the factors affecting indigenous pig production using generalized Poisson, negative binomial and binary logistic regression models. The analysis was based on the data of 495 rural households surveyed in 2019. Results showed that (1) indigenous pig production had significant and positive effects on household income of and multidimensional poverty reduction among ultra-poor ethnic minority households and (2) the factors positively affecting indigenous pig production are access to credits, number of motorbikes, government support under the poverty reduction programs, road type at the villages, and irrigation systems, while the effects of distance from home to the nearest agricultural input shops and access to the national electricity are negative. Asian sea bass, Lates calcarifer (Bloch, 1790), is one of the most farmed marine fish in Malaysia since the 1970s and is predominantly cultured at present. Although it has been farmed for some time, there is no systematic breeding programme in place. Local hatcheries rely heavily on wild and imported broodstock. However, imported stocks do not guarantee improved quality and even increase the chances of introducing pathogens into the country. Availability of superior breeding stocks, efficient dissemination and control of seed production could greatly assist in increasing Asian sea bass production. This paper presents the status of Asian sea bass production, its culture history in Malaysia and the current broodstock development programme implemented by the Fisheries Research Institute, particularly in the 11th Malaysia Plan from 2015 to 2020. In brief, broodstock from Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia were used as base population and were mated using full diallel method to produce cohorts. Three pairs of the selected broodstock were used for each cross and spawning performance was evaluated. The growth performances of the first generation (F1) offsprings were assessed in different culture systems. Physico-chemical water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH and salinity were maintained at optimal levels during all stages of the experiment. Results indicate that the growth performance of F1 improved by more than 60 % in terms of weight gain compared with the base population. Background: Understanding whether genomic selection has been effective in livestock and when the results of genomic selection became visible are essential questions which we have addressed in this paper. Three criteria were used to identify practices of breeding programs over time: (1) the point of divergence of estimated genetic trends based on pedigree-based best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) versus single-step genomic BLUP (ssGBLUP), (2) the point of divergence of realized Mendelian sampling (RMS) trends based on BLUP and ssGBLUP, and (3) the partition of genetic trends into that contributed by genotyped and non-genotyped individuals and by males and females. Methods: We used data on 282,035 animals from a commercial maternal line of pigs, of which 32,856 were genotyped for 36,612 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) after quality control. Phenotypic data included 228,427, 101,225, and 11,444 records for birth weight, average daily gain in the nursery, and feed intake, respectively. Breeding values were predicted in a multiple-trait framework using BLUP and ssGBLUP. Results: The points of divergence of the genetic and RMS trends estimated by BLUP and ssGBLUP indicated that genomic selection effectively started in 2019. Partitioning the overall genetic trends into that for genotyped and non-genotyped individuals revealed that the contribution of genotyped animals to the overall genetic trend increased rapidly from ~ 74% in 2016 to 90% in 2019. The contribution of the female pathway to the genetic trend also increased since genomic selection was implemented in this pig population, which reflects the changes in the genotyping strategy in recent years. Conclusions: Our results show that an assessment of breeding program practices can be done based on the point of divergence of genetic and RMS trends between BLUP and ssGBLUP and based on the partitioning of the genetic trend into contributions from different selection pathways. However, it should be noted that genetic trends can diverge before the onset of genomic selection if superior animals are genotyped retroactively. Triticale is a new type of real grain, which was created by the breeding and selection of a man. This species deserves more and more attention from both domestic producers and producers on a global scale because it encompassed all the positive properties of wheat and rye. The paper clearly presents the knowledge about the importance, nutritional value and application of triticale and the effect of its usage in a diet of monogastric animals. The variety of uses, appropriate chemical composition, acceptable and studied breeding technology, classifies triticale as an irreplaceable source of energy and protein needs of animals. Due to its multiple usages: for grain, fodder and as a raw material for biofuel, contributes to the economic sustainability of crop production. The needs of this plant at the level of agrotechnical investments are less than in other cereals, so triticale is increasingly presented in organic and sustainable agricultural production. Although pig systems start from a favourable baseline of environmental impact compared to other livestock systems, there is still scope to reduce their emissions and further mitigate associated impacts, especially in relation to nitrogen and phosphorous emissions. Key environmental impact hotspots of pig production systems are activities associated with feed production and manure management, as well as direct emissions (such as methane) from the animals and energy use. A major contributor to the environmental impacts associated with pig feed is the inclusion of soya in pig diets, especially since European pig systems rely heavily on soya imported from areas of the globe where crop production is associated with significant impacts of land use change, deforestation, carbon emissions, and loss of biodiversity. The "finishing" pig production stage contributes most to these environmental impacts, due to the amount of feed consumed, the efficiency with which feed is utilised, and the amount of manure produced during this stage. By definition therefore, any substantial improvements pig system environmental impact would arise from changes in feed production and manure management. In this paper, we consider potential solutions towards system environmental sustainability at these pig system components, as well as the bottlenecks that inhibit their effective implementation at the desired pace and magnitude. Examples include the quest for alternative protein sources to soya, the limits (perceived or real) to the genetic improvement of pigs, and the implementation of alternative manure management strategies, such as production of biogas through anaerobic digestion. The review identifies and discusses areas that future efforts can focus on, to further advance understanding around the potential sustainability benefits of modifications at various pig system components, and key sustainability trade-offs across the environment—economy—society pillars associated with synergistic and antagonistic effects when joint implementation of multiple solutions is considered. In this way, the review opens a discussion to facilitate the development of holistic decision support tools for pig farm management that account for interactions between the "feed * animal * manure" system components and trade-offs between sustainability priorities (e.g., environmental vs economic performance of pig system; welfare improvements vs environmental impacts). The transmission of viral aerosols poses a vulnerable aspect in the biosecurity measures aimed at preventing and controlling swine virus in pig production. Consequently, comprehending and mitigating the spread of aerosols holds paramount significance for the overall well-being of pig populations. This paper offers a comprehensive review of transmission characteristics, influential factors and preventive strategies of common swine viral aerosols. Firstly, certain viruses such as foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV), porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), influenza A viruses (IAV), porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) and pseudorabies virus (PRV) have the potential to be transmitted over long distances (exceeding 150 m) through aerosols, thereby posing a substantial risk primarily to inter-farm transmission. Additionally, other viruses like classical swine fever virus (CSFV) and African swine fever virus (ASFV) can be transmitted over short distances (ranging from 0 to 150 m) through aerosols, posing a threat primarily to intra-farm transmission. Secondly, various significant factors, including aerosol particle sizes, viral strains, the host sensitivity to viruses, weather conditions, geographical conditions, as well as environmental conditions, exert a considerable influence on the transmission of viral aerosols. Researches on these factors serve as a foundation for the development of strategies to combat viral aerosol transmission in pig farms. Finally, we propose several preventive and control strategies that can be implemented in pig farms, primarily encompassing the implementation of early warning models, viral aerosol detection, and air pretreatment. This comprehensive review aims to provide a valuable reference for the formulation of efficient measures targeted at mitigating the transmission of viral aerosols among swine populations.
