The paper highlights environmental injustices in South Africa as well as the accompanying continuation of mega-extraction-based violence. In doing so, the paper examines how the history of environmental injustices has left its mark in various parts of this country, where industrialization practices and policies from the apartheid era lead to environmental degradation that disproportionately impacts black people. This exemplifies how epistemic injustice occurs when dominant structures in knowledge production eliminate and silence the epistemic integrity of the sufferers, as well as how their contributions to the environmental knowledge system have been undermined, misinterpreted, and curtailed in discursive practices. In this context, the paper explores how a decolonial ecological turn and practices in South Africa can integrate environmental and development policies for sustainability and pluriversal peacebuilding. Abstract How to protect the Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (IAHS) has become a practical problem to be solved due to its number increasing rapidly. To promote the industrial integration development (IID) in IAHS sites was an essential measure regarded widely. This paper first reviewed IID theories, and then analyzed resources characteristics in IAHS sites and IAHS conservation requirements. Then based on these aspects, an IID theoretical framework was built for IAHS sites. In the theoretical framework, the definition and connotation and the principles that IID should abide by were proposed first, and then an implemented procedure of IID was built. The implemented procedure drew an IID route for IAHS sites, which describes the key indexes of assessment on the IID level, how to analyze resources characteristics, which resource types can be used, how to achieve industrial integration, how to organize operating entities of industries and how to balance benefits of stakeholders. The theory indicated the distinctiveness and key aspects of IID in IAHS sites and suggested how to promote the IID in IAHS sites and which themes are research priorities. The current debate on critical raw materials lacks a historical dimension. While the idea of identifying certain raw materials as particularly problematic - and therefore critical - to future development is not a new one, a historical perspective has not yet been systematically integrated into the debate. This article explores concepts from history of technology to make suggestions about how we can better understand the ways in which reflection triggers and shapes material change. It discusses the concepts of social construction of technology (SCOT) and the development of technological systems, applying them to the debates on the criticality of wood and limestone during the age of industrialization. China is at the stage of industrialization and urbanization and because the energy demand and consumption for this process is rigid, coupled with emissions and global warming awareness, China is on a path to cut back emissions as she focuses on alternative and sustainable way to green the economy. This research investigates determining factors in measuring the dynamic changes in green development growth index (GDGI) over a given time frame. By adopting a non-radial directional distance function (NDDF), where more pollutants are added like sulphur dioxide emissions, solid wastes, waste water, and carbon dioxide emissions instead of using only one pollutant in measurement and using a global distance envelop analysis (DEA) to model green performance by considering both desirable and undesirable outputs, the model was decomposed into efficiency change (EC) index, best practice gap change (BPC) index, and technology gap change (TCG) index and these three indexes were employed to measure the green development performance in thirty provinces across china from 2000 to 2012. Results showed that provinces in the eastern region of China are greener than the central and western regions. Analyzing all three calculated dependent variables from a quantile perspective revealed that effects of EC, BPC, and TGC varied across different quantiles of GDGI. The coefficients of BPC were more significant than EC across quantiles, and TGC coefficients only became significant from Q(0.35), and continued on this path until the last observed quantile Q(0.95) however it was less than EC in terms of significance. The values of pseudo R 2 also continued to increase from Q(0.20) until the last observed quantile with 86% accuracy in prediction recorded at Q(0.95). Analyzing the 80th percentile revealed that the coefficient of BPC was highest in this percentile which implies that a unit increase in best practice gap change, will influence green development growth by 102.3 percent, and a unit increase in efficiency change, will accelerate green development growth by 99.41 percent while a unit increase in technical gap ratio change will produce 99.38 percent increase in green development growth of China. Energy and Resources use efficiency in industrial sector holds the key in achieving sustainable development. Networking among industries to use by-product and waste product streams as input sources to the other industrial units, which is termed as Eco-industrial Networking holds the key for Eco-industrial development which is a building block of sustainable development of cities. Based on the Korean eco-industrial park (EIP) experience, the present paper reviews the key drivers to such a networking, identifies what are the conditions and strategies required at different levels, and barriers for their implementation. The paper further contextualizes the same to Asian region by linking EIPs to urban systems and that evolves into Eco-city concepts. Recent economic turmoil has revived interest in the quest for sustainable growth. Current economic thinking attaches growing importance to industrial development. The roots of such thinking can be traced back to traditional arguments about the beneficial role of manufacturing for economic growth through horizontal and vertical spillovers to other sectors. These spillovers are of particular importance at the regional level, as such externalities tend to be localized in nature. The objective of this paper is to explore the relationship between economic structure and regional growth in ten Western European EU member states in the post-crisis period. The analysis wishes to answer the question of whether regions with a higher concentration of manufacturing outperform their counterparts with more diverse economic structures. A spatial panel econometric technique is applied in order to distinguish between the intra-regional and inter-regional effects of economic structure, yielding recommendations for policy makers in the field of industrial policy. To contribute to the fight against the prevalent, deteriorating, smog pollution in China, India, and other rapidly industrializing regions, the team who planned this Special Volume (SV) of the Journal of Cleaner Production (JCLP) worked to document and consolidate what is known about what has worked and what hasn't worked well in preventing smog or in reducing their severity or duration. Based upon fifty-four articles, the team developed an interdisciplinary, holistic approach for mitigating and preventing smog, which is comprised of the following eight interconnected categories of articles pertaining to: 1) Monitoring, inventory and assessment; 2) Scientific research; 3) Policy formulation, implementation and evaluation; 4) Regulatory instruments; 5) Economic incentives; 6) Information, education and societal empowerment; 7) Technology development and deployment; and 8) Social norms, culture and lifestyle. The team summarized the new knowledge and findings from the fifty-four articles included in those eight categories of this SV. Special attention was given to important issues in the current policy debates surrounding smog pollution, including: preventive methods, which are preferable to end-of-pipe pollution control approaches; balancing environmental, economic and social objectives; co-benefits among local air quality improvement approaches, relations between climate change and societal wellbeing; monitoring, reporting and inventory; and more effective information disclosure and public participation for preventing or reducing smog now and in the future. The introductory article concludes with a cautiously optimistic message, to turn the on-going, uphill fight against smog into an accelerator of the profound and urgently needed transitions towards equitable, sustainable, post-fossil-carbon societies. The world's habitat is being deteriorated especially due to the unsustainable production. The need for sustainable development and reducing humanities' environmental footprint have been addressed in various international frameworks, meetings and reports (e.g. Kyoto protocol, the Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production Program, the Ten Year Framework of Programs on Sustainable Consumption and Production, the UN Resource Panel, and the Green Economy Initiative, Rio+20, green building certificates, "UNEP Green Economy" in 2011, "Green New Deal" in 2012, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's report etc.). EIDs (the eco industrial development) can act as catalysts in sustainable development and in reducing environmental footprint of the production processes. Based on an in-depth literature review, this paper aims to analyze how EID can be supported so that environmental footprint of the production processes can be reduced contributing sustainable development. With this aim, the objectives include: analysis of the need for the EID; need for the sustainable development enhanced by sustainable production and sustainable products; key success factors for, barriers against and drivers for the EID. Why, after fifty years of fossil fuelled “brown growth” and steadfast refusal to join international agreements on carbon reduction did South Korea prioritize “green growth” (GG) as an overarching national initiative in 2008? Our principal aim is to explain Korea’s ambitious pursuit of GG since that time. We argue that Korean-style environmentalism is best understood as an extension of the long-held philosophy of developmentalism amongst the policy-making elite. We first examine the origins and specify the central tenets of this new philosophy that we term developmental environmentalism. We then discuss the motivations that led the policymakers to embrace developmental environmentalism, and the means by which GG was translated into swift and sustained policy action. While the empirical focus of this article is Korea, we conclude by tentatively proposing an analytical framework that might explain why some countries are more likely than others to initiate a sustained shift towards GG. Green total factor productivity (GTFP) is an index that demonstrates the concept of sustainable development. It can be used to measure the degree of coordination between industrial development and environmental protection. Considering shortage of studies on agricultural GTFP and the urgency of hog breeding's long-term development, our paper puts forward the study of GTFP of pig-breeding in China for the first time. Firstly, five main pollutants discharged by hog breeding of 18 provinces from 2007 to 2011 are estimated respectively. They are added into a variables list that is commonly used to estimate total factor productivity. Then, based on those data, the Super-SBM model is employed to estimate GTFP of hog breeding for three kinds of scales in these provinces. The empirical result shows: 1) GTFP of 18 provinces are higher than that at the national level, but the majority of them do not achieve efficient production; 2) hog breeding industry transferred from traditional producing areas to middle areas is not followed up with efficiency improvement. other areas, like northeast, coast, and southwest see GTFP transference that is more efficient due to their resource endowments.Via gray correlation analysis, this paper finds that, in most cases, GTFP is discouraged by increasing pollution control degree. This article investigates the impact of two important socio-economic variables-urbanization and industrialization-on energy consumption in a panel of emerging economies. The results indicate that income increases energy consumption in both the long run and the short run. In the long run, urbanization decreases energy consumption, while industrialization increases it. Long-run dynamics are important as evidenced by the estimated coefficient on the error correction term. These results have implications for sustainable development. Economic growth policies designed to increase income and industrialization will increase energy consumption. Since most energy needs in emerging economies are currently met by the burning of fossil fuels, economic growth and industrialization policies will be at odds with sustainable development. Abstract: The change of regional industrial structure best reflects the transformation of resource utilization in human society, and also results in a visible alteration of its eco-environmental effect. It is a significant content for regional sustainability development and man-land relationship research to explore the eco-environmental effect of regional industrial structure change. The ecoenvironmental influence produced by nine-industry subclasses’ development was analyzed, and at the same time, the historical trace of industrial structure development in Chongqing after municipality establishing was reviewed briefly. Making use of ecoenvironmental influence modulus of industrial departments (EIMID), we quantitatively evaluated the entire eco-environmental impact of industrial structure change in Chongqing from 1997 to 2008 by integrated eco-environmental influence modulus of industrial structure (IEIMIS). Our research showed that the industrial structure had experienced two significant transformations since the establishment of municipality in 1997 and that IEIMIS presented an approximate U-shaped curve with an ascent trend after an initial decline and fluctuated in a certain range. From 1997 to 2001 the economic development was rather sustainable in Chongqing, but from 2002 to 2008, the social development was at the expensive of eco-environment deterioration and the industrial structure change intensified human activity''s pressure on local environment. It was concluded that as the youngest municipality and the city still in industrialization increasing stage in China, Chongqing faced an arduous task of industry upgrading and optimizing. Developing circular economy and eco-industry and implementing cleaner production methods would be the optimum choice for its future development. Having been trained in biophysical dimensions of ecology with an ecosystem approach, the move towards a larger interdisciplinary approach with emphasis on socio-ecological systems analysis with implications to related ecological studies to societal concerns was indeed a challenging task. Having had to face with differential paradigms determining natural vs. social sciences, it was soon realized that arriving at compromises between these two knowledge streams holds the key for addressing sustainability concerns in the area of natural resource management linked with livelihood/developmental concerns of human societies ranging from the very 'traditional' to the most 'modern'. In such an effort, 'knowledge systems', particularly 'traditional ecological knowledge' (TEK) available with local communities through an experiential process was considered the key towards linking the biophysical with the socio-economic-cultural dimensions of the issues under consideration, bringing in text-book based 'formal ecological knowledge" to the extent required and appropriate depending upon what the socio-ecological situation demands. Very traditional societies living close to nature and natural resources around them may have to have TEK being brought in to a much larger degree so as to avoid social disruptions setting in, compared to the more modern societies who may need TEK only to be brought in so as to create buffering mechanisms within the socio-ecological system and thus cope up with the ill-effects arising from excessive use of energy-intensive technologies. In other words, community participatory approaches based on a value system that they understand and appreciate and therefore can participate in the process of conservation linked sustainable development is the key to combat environmental uncertainties, arising on one hand from ecological 'global change' and on the other economic 'globalization'. This is an emerging area of study in which I have had the privilege of getting involved towards understanding socio-ecological system structure and functions, the inspiration for which came from my teacher, late Professor R. Misra who always encouraged me to move away from the trodden path; and to a great measure from very traditional societies who have always valued their closeness to "nature", and which formed the basis of their cultural identity. Human activities have become so extensive that all ecosystems on the planet have been altered to some extent. The fate of humankind will be determined by how sustainable ecosystems and the renewable resources in them are managed. The implication of this is obvious: humanity must live within nature's carrying capacity. In recent years, humans have recognised that growth of the economy depends on natural capital, and it is important that we now recognise that we are part of an international ecological economics community, so as to better integrate the economy and ecology. However, there are few successful examples of this. The aim of this paper is to show a method for integrated analysis between economic growth and natural carrying capacity by linking the concepts of ecological footprint and valuation of ecosystem services. When applied to China for the period 1987-2003, the empirical evidence suggests that the size of the Chinese economy surpassed the carrying capacity in 1992. As the embodiment of human activities, the change of regional industrial structure is an essential driving factor of global environmental change. Consequently, the research on the change of regional industrial structure and associated effects on the environment is one of the key issues of researches on sustainable development, human–environment relationship, and regional response to global environment change. However, compared to the flourish of researches on environmental impact assessment of industrial departments, few studies have been conducted to assess the environmental impact of regional industrial structure. In this study, based on a synthetic analysis of environmental disturbances of different industrial departments, the environmental impact coefficient of industrial department associated with the index of environmental impact of industrial structure was constructed, so as to make a quantitative assessment of environmental impact of the change of regional industrial structure. And the results of the case study in Lijiang City, a rural region of China, have showed that there are two obvious changes of industrial structure in the study area from 1992 to 2003, associated with a continuous decreasing of the index of environmental impact of industrial structure, which indicated a positive environmental effects of the change of regional industrial structure. The debate on sustainable globalized development rests on two clearly stated economic assumptions: that "development" proceeds, solely and inevitably, through industrialization and the proliferation of capital intensive high-technology, towards the creation of service sector economies; and that globalization, based on a neoliberal, capitalist, free market ideology, provides the only vehicle for such development. Sustainability, according to the proponents of globalized development, is merely a function of market forces, which will generate the solutions for all problems including the environmental dilemmas that loom over the globe today. The social focus of globalized development is clearly the "individual" and the much-touted goal of development in the context of these debates, is the emancipation of the individual from want. This glorification of the individual, so characteristic of the Enlightenment, has defined all aspects of modernity, leading to approaches that are self-focused and that give little thought to the needs of society or even the social context. The increasing impoverishment of human life and the growing environmental degradation, however, provide a poignant counterpoint to this onrush of capital interests, demanding a reassessment of sustainability separate from the logic of industrialization and globalized development. This paper examines the unfolding of the logic of capitalism, which underlies the structure of the Rostowian model of development and the problems in the assumptions underlying today's globalized development process. The evident impossibility of sustainability in the current growth-based market system leads to the examination of alternatives including a reflexive understanding of the choices and the inclusion of opportunity costs, related to the social, environmental and economic aspects of decision making. This paper deals with the project of construction of an industrial complex in the Rio Itata Valley, located in Bío-Bío Región, Ñuble Province, Ranquil Commune, Velenunque area, 54 kilometers North east from Concepción and 34 kilometers south west from Chillán. Ranquil commune or district, according to PNUD., is the least developed in the region and in the country. The proyect of "Empresa Celco Arauco y Constitución S.A." represents an initial investment of US $1.400.000. There is a strong opposition to the project because of the possible pollution that the complex might cause which would affect the sustainable development.
