Energy efficiency is crucial in contemporary industry and controlling the resource power state by switching off/on commands is a promising measure. The control problem of deciding when to switch off/on the machines depending on the state of the system at a given time is not trivial due to the effect the control might have on the system production rate. Threshold-based policies using buffer occupancy information to control the machines can be effectively used to reduce energy consumption. Nevertheless, highly complex control policies are difficult to be applied and costly to be managed in practice. Buffer-based threshold policies to control multiple machines simultaneously in a serial production line for energy efficiency purposes are analysed in this work. The optimal control minimises the energy consumption while assuring a certain target production rate for the system. The effects of controlling different combinations of machines simultaneously with different number of thresholds have been investigated through numerical experiments with discrete event simulation. Insights regarding the trade-off between the complexity of the control and the performance gains are provided. Energy efficiency is widely recognized as the foundational and most critical strategy for decarbonizing the manufacturing sector. Misconceptions surrounding energy efficiency measures often hinder their widespread adoption. This article aims to debunk five common myths and provides data and resources to help implement efficiency projects faster and more effectively to achieve greater decarbonization. First, the article challenges the myth that organizations have exhausted all possible energy efficiency opportunities by achieving voluntary energy intensity goals or energy performance certification. Second, it also addresses the misconceptions that efficiency projects are capital-intensive, require many qualified specialists, and have long investment return periods. By presenting real-world case studies and referencing commonly found efficiency opportunities, the article illustrates that energy-savings opportunities are ubiquitous. Organizations can use various contracting mechanisms as well as financial and technical resources from utility companies and government programs to lessen their burden. The notion that efficiency measures can be implemented solely in proprietorship facilities is dispelled. Bifacial solar modules, capable of harvesting sunlight from both sides, present a promising pathway for sustainable energy generation. This study examines the performance of bifacial modules on a cloudy day through comparative exergy and energy analyses. The analysis considers both the quality and quantity of energy produced by bifacial and monofacial modules. Conducted at Qassim University in Buraydah City, Saudi Arabia, the study recorded measurements during two intervals on a cloudy day using a real-time photovoltaic measurement system. Module performance was evaluated concerning energy yield, exergy yield, and solar irradiance, factoring in ambient and module temperatures. The results demonstrate that bifacial modules outperformed monofacial modules in electrical energy and output exergy. In the first period, the bifacial modules showed a 9.5% higher exergy efficiency and a 7% greater energy efficiency compared to the monofacial modules. During the second period, the bifacial modules achieved a 4.5% higher exergy efficiency and a 3.5% increased energy efficiency over the monofacial modules. These findings contribute to global sustainability efforts by reducing fossil fuel dependence and optimizing bifacial PV module design and operation for enhanced energy and exergy efficiency, even in cloudy conditions. This review focuses on sports buildings, selecting 62 high-quality papers published in building science over the past 30 years that investigate low-carbon and energy-efficient research. For sustainable development, the roles of energy efficiency and renewable energy is undeniable. We are passing through the era of globalization and economies are expanding their economic activities across borders. In this scenario, nations are striving for sustainable economic development without hurting the climatic conditions. Therefore, this study employs Bai and Carrion-i-Silvestre unit root test and Westerlund cointegration tests. The variables were found to have mix order of integration and Westerlund test shows cointegration in the panel data. The Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR) is used to ascertain the effects of energy efficiency and economic, environmental, and globalization factors on the load capacity factor (LCF), a measure of environmental quality in G-20 countries. Key findings supporting the Load Capability Curve (LCC) theory show that while initial economic growth (GDP) has a negative impact (coefficient of -0.035 at the median quantile), advanced economic growth (GDP2) improves LCF (coefficient of 0.513 at the 90th quantile and 0.388 at the median). The median quantile coefficient of 0.055 indicates a positive association between the consumption of renewable energy and LCF. Natural resources exhibit a coefficient of 0.061 at the 90th quantile and 0.037 at the median. However, there are drawbacks to both financial globalization and contemporary environmental technology; their coefficients at the median quantile are -0.021 and -0.058, respectively. Oil refineries play a crucial role in meeting global energy demands, and optimizing the efficiency of critical processes is vital for economic feasibility and environmental sustainability. Simulation is an essential tool for the optimization of valuable products. This work presents the rigorous simulation of a vacuum distillation unit (VDU) based on actual data from the vacuum distillation processes using Aspen HYSYS V10. The Peng–Robinson fluid package is used in this simulation, and an input assay with a standard density of 29 API_60 (879.8 kg/m3) is employed. True boiling point (TBP) assay data are the type that is being used. Methane, ethane, propane, i-Butane, n-Butane, i-Pentane, and n-Pentane are the components listed in the simulation. The research determines that achieving a yield capacity of 685 tons/h requires thirty stages in the atmospheric distillation unit and twelve stages in the vacuum distillation unit while operating at 420 °C temperature and 9 kPa pressure. Adjustments in the flash section temperature (FST) and steam flow rate (SFR) are proposed to enhance operational efficiency. Increasing the FST from 370 °C to 400 °C and adjusting SFR from 10 tons/h to 26 tons/h increases the Light Vacuum Gas Oil (LVGO) yield by 7.2% while elevating the FST from 400 °C to 430 °C and adjusting SFR from 10 tons/h to 26 tons/h enhances the High Vacuum Gas Oil (HVGO) yield by 7.4%. These optimization strategies offer a practical and effective approach for refineries to improve the economic benefits of vacuum distillation units. The implications of this research can act as a computational thinking exercise for higher education students considering the case study where only through changing the operational strategies can the yield be enhanced by 10.81% in the vacuum distillation unit of the oil refinery. A significant portion of global energy consumption is by the industrial sector; thus, improving the energy efficiency of machining processes can lead to substantial environmental and economic benefits. The present study reviews the recent advancement made for improving the energy efficiency of machining processes. First the energy consumption of the machining processes was explored and then the key areas and developments in their energy consumption modeling were identified. Following this, the review explores various strategies for achieving energy savings in machining. These strategies include energy-efficient machine tools, the accurate modeling of the energy consumption of machining processes, the implementation of optimization techniques and the application of artificial intelligence (AI). Additionally, the review highlights the potential of AI in further reducing energy consumption within machining operations and achieving energy efficiency. A review of these energy-saving strategies in machining processes reveals impressive potential for significant reductions in energy consumption: energy-efficient design can achieve up to a 45% reduction, optimizing cutting parameters may minimize consumption by around 40%, optimizing tool paths can reduce consumption by approximately 50%, optimizing non-cutting energy consumption and sequencing can lead to savings of about 30% and employing AI shows promising energy efficiency improvements of around 20%. Vertical sun control and shading devices such as louvers are essential features of modern building design. These devices are being used increasingly in the Middle Eastern region due to the extreme temperatures. These devices reduce building peak heat and cooling requirements and enhance indoor natural light. However, it is important to assess these devices so that they meet specific structural strength and serviceability criteria, because if they start to deform, discomfort for the tenants could result. Such deformation might even cause damage to parts of the building, such as the glass windows, especially if this deformation occurs repeatedly over time. An actual case study with aluminum and glass sun control devices was analyzed structurally. Aluminum devices with a twofold height curvature were made from 6-mm-thick curved tubes. They were supported by brackets at various heights with thermal expansion joints for temperature fluctuations. Aluminum devices can withstand 2.0-kPa wind loads, whereas glass fins can withstand loads of 1.8-kPa. The research assessed the induced stresses and deflections through numerical simulations using shell elements. The Internet of Things (IoT) has expanded rapidly, allowing for a network of sensors and gadgets to collect and share information to make people's lives easier and more convenient. As the Internet of Things (IoT) grows, however, energy efficiency becomes a major issue, especially for portable and wireless gadgets. Low-power, long-range communication capabilities are needed, and Long-Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) has emerged as a viable solution to meet this need. This study provides an in-depth analysis of the LoRaWAN-based, low-power Internet of Things. The suggested network architecture is optimized for low power consumption and high connectivity for numerous Internet of Things (IoT) use cases. This low-power Internet of Things network relies on LoRaWAN gateways, end devices, and a server to function. LoRaWAN is a technology that enables the low-power, long-range transmission of data packets. The results show that the optimized case and nonoptimized case have a delivery ratio of 0.85 to 0.73 from node 100 to 500. LoRaWAN significantly reduces energy usage compared to conventional IoT connectivity alternatives, making it a fantastic option for battery-powered devices in far-flung or limited-resource locations. Finally, the adoption of LoRaWAN provides a viable solution to address the energy efficiency concerns in IoT networks, hence allowing for sustainable, long-lasting IoT installations and enabling a wide variety of new applications within the IoT ecosystem. The energy design of museums in developing countries is a subject that has been poorly studied, despite its significant implications for heritage preservation, human comfort, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability. This study introduces a comprehensive framework of Energy Performance Indicators tailored to air-conditioned museums in tropical regions, which represent the most prevalent museum type. These indicators are particularly important as international standards may not be applicable in these contexts. A comprehensive review of the factors and their design implications is provided at the building, system, and component levels. Efficient integration of lighting and air conditioning systems can optimize energy use while maintaining appropriate conditions for both artefact preservation and visitor comfort. Parameters such as average illuminance, uniformity of lighting, lighting power density and lighting energy use intensity are critical in balancing visual quality and energy efficiency. Recommended values and strategies, such as the use of LED lighting and daylight harvesting, help to minimize energy consumption. In addition, parameters such as power density and energy use intensity of air conditioning systems are essential for assessing their efficiency. Techniques such as the integration of solar-assisted, optimized performance indices can effectively reduce energy consumption. Synthetic indicators for assessing lighting quality and overall energy performance are (i) Average Illuminance Ratio, which assesses the adequacy of lighting in a space by comparing the average measured illuminance with the recommended illuminance levels for that space, and (ii) Energy Use Intensity, which represents the total annual energy consumption per unit area of conditioned space. Automated machine learning (AutoML) is recognized for its efficiency in facilitating model development due to its ability to perform tasks autonomously, without constant human intervention. This work introduces and investigates energy efficiency metrics for advanced hyperparameter optimization algorithms within AutoML. The experimentation demonstrates the application of Green AI principles to AutoML hyperparameter optimization algorithms. The focus of this paper is the relationship between sustainable energy sources and financial development. The main research hypothesis assumes a positive link between these areas, with inevitable differences across countries and business sectors. The following research questions were asked: Is the impact of financial development on sustainable energy resources the same in different EU countries advanced in green transition processes? How is transition towards renewable energy sources progressing in different economic sectors? Does financial development influence sectoral transition in particular countries? This study uses the TOPSIS method and 25 variables for EU countries from 2013 to 2021. Key findings reveal that the link between sustainable energy sources and financial development varies across EU countries, country size affects energy autonomy, and the transition also differs by business sector. Surprisingly, higher financial development correlates with less progress in sustainable energy initiatives. The results of our research may be useful for government decision-makers in the process of designing and controlling the country's transition to sustainable energy. This research paper presents a comprehensive analysis to develop an energy-efficient and net-zero-energy (NZE) model for a proposed hypothetical mosque model located in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The study employs a sequential optimization analysis using BEopt software (Building Energy Optimization Tool) to explore various energy conservation measures (ECMs) from three main categories: HVAC, lighting, and building envelope. The ECMs are evaluated based on energy savings and life-cycle cost, with the most cost-effective options selected for the proposed energy-efficient design package. Furthermore, a passive downdraught evaporative cooling (PDEC) system is introduced as a passive cooling strategy to further reduce the cooling energy consumption. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis is utilized to optimize the airflow around the building and PDEC tower, determining the optimal PDEC dimensions for enhanced ventilation performance. The PDEC system is found to contribute 12% to cooling energy savings, which further enhances the energy efficiency of the proposed mosque. A rooftop solar PV system is incorporated into the optimal energy-efficient design to achieve a NZE mosque. The results demonstrate that the NZE model achieves 80% energy savings, with the remaining 20% offset by the solar PV system. Moreover, life-cycle cost analysis reveals that the NZE model offers the lowest cost, making it the most cost-effective design option. This research provides valuable insights into designing sustainable mosques in hot and dry climates, such as Riyadh, offering a comprehensive solution to significantly reduce energy end-use and promote sustainable building practices. The urbanization development in India over the last few decades has been fast, very unequal, and not sustainable. The UN projects that by 2050, it will be one of the top three nations in terms of urbanization. India's urban population is expected to grow from 481 million to 814 million by 2050 an added 333 million. There will be significant effects on energy consumption patterns and GHG emissions when India's urban population increases from 34.93% now to 57.7% in 2050. Conventional construction materials have a high embodied energy, and buildings account for most of the world's energy usage. The production of today's standard materials accounts for 20% of global CO2 emissions and 25% of global energy usage. Rapid building is required to satisfy the need for housing, but if it is done wrongly, it will only meet the demand for housing temporarily and at the expense of livability, sustainability, pollution, resilience, and ultimately economic competitiveness. The Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB) have the potential to revolutionize environmentally friendly construction in India. CSEBs provides the perspective of energy-efficient, cost-reduction, and environmentally-friendly building materials, overall contributing to sustainable development, at a time when there is a growing concern of awareness regarding environmental issue. Since CSEBs are unburned materials, no coal or other burning fuel is required in their manufacturing. The paper delves into the history of CSEB, passive architecture, and circular economy in Indian residences, incorporating many strategies into one plan, the potential to reduce a building's overall energy consumption while simultaneously improving its cost-effectiveness, usability, and social cohesion. The goal of this study is to demonstrate that stabilized earth walls may be utilized in low and medium-rise structures when paired with a frame constructed of today's standard materials, lowering total use while achieving density requirements.

Abstract Efficient highway lighting is crucial for ensuring road safety and reducing energy consumption and costs. Traditional highway lighting systems rely on timers or simple photosensors, leading to inefficient operation by illuminating lights when not needed or failing to adjust to changing conditions. The emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) and related technologies has enabled the development of smart automated highway lighting systems that can dynamically control illumination levels based on real-time data. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the current state-of-the-art in smart automated highway lighting systems employing IoT technologies. Key components, communication protocols, data processing techniques, and lighting control strategies are discussed. The integration of renewable energy sources and energy storage systems is explored for environmentally sustainable operations. Practical implementation case studies are analyzed to highlight benefits and challenges. Open research issues and future directions for further enhancements are identified.

Abstract Our study pores on evaluating the impact of firm specific and macro level determinants of energy intensity of Indian firms belonging to manufacturing and power sector. We collect a panel dataset of 3316 firms for 10 years ranging from 2010 to 2020. We employ the advanced biased corrected method of moments estimator and the quantile regression estimator for panel data models for our empirical analysis. We find that poor labor efficiency is largely responsible for increasing energy intensity of the sample firms. Energy intensity can be optimized by investing in better plant and machinery. Moreover, machineries that require frequent repairs and maintenance need to be replaced with latest tools. While larger firms are found to be energy intensive, profitable firms are found to be in a better position to enhance their energy efficiency. Under macroeconomic scenario, GDP growth and trade openness lead to boosting up the energy consumption at the firm level whereas, the global energy prices act as a constraint and necessitate careful use of energy. Based on our findings we provide certain policy recommendations and suggestions in order to limit energy intensity and enhance energy efficiency of the Indian manufacturing firms.
