This paper focuses on the critical role of institutional entrepreneurs’ social skills in enabling transformative change as described by the Multi-Level Perspective. Understanding the role of social skills is crucial for developing a micro-foundational view of sustainability transitions. We develop an analytical framework using a multiple case study on Swiss cantonal planners who acted as institutional entrepreneurs during comparable sustainability transitions by introducing sustainable planning practices within their cantons. We find seven applied skills (i) empathic, (ii) analytical, (iii) translational, (iv) framing, (v) tactical, (vi) organizational, and (vii) timing. Four propositions discuss the role of these social skills across transition phases: from pre-development to take-off, from take-off to acceleration, and from acceleration to stabilization. We present conclusions and implications for future research on the micro-foundations of sustainability transitions.

Public spaces that appeal to large populations within urban uses are areas that should be especially evaluated in order to create a more sustainable future. Educational areas, where children spend most of their time, are public spaces that have a great importance in terms of child development. Like all public spaces, prioritizing sustainable planning & design parameters in the creation of educational spaces, the use of sustainable education spaces and the inclusion of the values, actions and principles inherent in sustainable development in all forms of education and training have important economic, educational, environmental and social contributions. Within the scope of this thesis, it is aimed to evaluate the educational areas in the city of Tokat in line with sustainable planning & design parameters. In line with this goal, field studies were conducted in 12 sample areas at pre-school, primary, secondary and high school levels [23 Nisan Milli Egemenlik Kindergarten, 15 July Milli İrade Kindergarten, State Hospital Kindergarten, İbn-i Kemal Primary School, Karşıyaka Primary School, Fevzi Çakmak Secondary School, Vakıfbank Namık Kemal Secondary School, Gazi Osman Paşa Secondary School, Milli Piyango İhya Balak Science High School, 15 July Milli İrade Anatolian High School, Fine Arts High School and Gazi Osman Paşa High School]. The sustainability levels of the case educational areas were evaluated and compared in line with the technical information and observations within the framework of nine evaluation criteria: "zoning plan data, land size, site selection criteria, transportation characteristics, landscape design, plan typology, material properties, design features and social characteristics". Finally, suggestions were made that support sustainable planning & design parameters in the evaluated schools.

The urban advances of the last decades have enabled the expansion of the electric sector globally, hence increasing the waste generated by such activities. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards have been adopted worldwide by the electricity sector and corroborate for sustainable planning of these companies. However, a gap in studies that specifically address the waste management strategies in such sustainability reports for this sector can be highlighted. Therefore, the present study aimed at identifying and analyzing quantities, typologies, and disposal options for waste generated in the electricity sector through declared information of a sample of companies worldwide in GRI reports from 2017 to 2019, besides discussing the results under the sustainability and circularity approaches. The adopted methodology considered the selection of the electricity sector's companies in the GRI database and the evaluation, according to sustainability criteria, of the collected data related to waste management. The results pointed to 26 holding companies, 15 of them reported waste management, but, in general, nonstandard. During the analyzed period, approximately 51.2 ​Mt of waste were declared, 99.2% of which refer to non-hazardous waste, and a fraction of 55% of the total generated waste sent to landfills, even though a large part of it was recyclable. Nonetheless, the sample pointed to a 17% reduction in the total waste generation and a decrease of 56% on landfilling in the two-year analysis, which might constitute a trend in internal policies for increasing the sustainability and circularity levels in the electricity sector concerning waste management. This study innovated by highlighting the current practices on waste management and its evolution towards more sustainable patterns in the electricity sector, which are, to the best of our knowledge, still incipient themes discussed by the recent literature.

Water being one of the most important elements for life on earth and the planetary ecosystem as a whole, it is widely recognized by both society and the United Nations as one of the most important research problems of the modern world. One of the difficulties faced by this system has to do with the management of water treatment plants in the context of sustainable development. This article introduces a decision-making support system conceived to develop an optimal planning aimed at the efficiency and sustainability of the drinking water treatment chain. The system is made up of a mathematical programming model and a solution procedure for the optimal planning of the water treatment in a bi-objective context. Thus, the first objective maximizes profit and the second one minimizes the emission of pollutants. The following constraints are considered: mass balances, production capacities of the different water production echelons and their specific conditions, water supply and demand, and the technically permissible levels of pollutants, which are generically suggested, regardless of the technologies and production alternatives. Due to its particular nature, the model allows solving any instance of the problem in excellent CPU times.

City Marketing has a strong tradition in Berlin, with two organisations, Berlin Partner and Visit Berlin, responsible for designing and implementing relevant strategies. Sustainability has been on and off the city marketing agenda, almost exclusively in its environmental dimension. In this article we examine the current representations of Berlin as a “sustainable city” in the official City Marketing strategies. We look at how sustainability is used and instrumentalized to create a specific city profile, and also to attract particular target groups in tourism. We propose an analysis of sustainable planning in Berlin since reunification, to show how it has moved into different directions over time and how this has (or has not) been followed by City Marketing. In this endeavour we move between the existing, and as we argue deeper and more sophisticated, environmental planning of the city on the one hand, and the reductions and simplifications of City Marketing representations on the other. Finally, we argue that there are inherent contradictions in marketing a sustainable city, where both in terms of tourism and economic development, the concept of growth seems to be reaching environmental limits.

It is well-known that the ultra-peripheral territories as Islands present several limitations such as the lack of resources, restricted land, mass tourism, and barriers to movement, and connectivity between urban centers. These obstacles make ultra-peripheral regions suitable case studies considering their territorial governance and consequently, sustainable development and growth. Thus, transportation and infrastructure sustainability in these regions are not an exception. Considering all the obstacles present in these regions, the accessibility and connectivity patterns that the local population has in these territories should be assessed and monitored. Thereby, through exploratory tools, the present research assumes to examine, using accessibility and connectivity indicators, the consequences across the social-economic dimension that the regional transportation and infrastructure should convey to the Azores Islands Archipelago populations. Therefore, this article allows us to set the present situation regarding this region&rsquo, s accessibility and connectivity patterns, creating an additional tool for supporting the main actors&rsquo, design and implementation of these territories&rsquo, future plans and strategies. Besides, this study enables us to recognize that Pico, Flores, and S&atilde, o Miguel are the ones with better accessibility patterns within the Azores Archipelago.

The importance of scale in research and planning for the MCR in the developing world is no longer debatable. This is especially true in the current era of globalization and technological advances transforming traditional scalar hierarchies and creating multiple spatialities. The aspatial, network-based, representational, and discursive roles of scale are also becoming increasingly more consequential. I see scale as the third prong in a coherent tri-pronged approach to sustainable development in the Asian MCR that should be used in conjunction with the other two prongs, as discussed in the previous chapter. I recognize that scale remains a confounding concept, although a paradigmatic shift toward conceptual inclusivity by reconciling its many facets, seems to be taking place in the literature. In this chapter I offer an overview of this shift, followed by a brief look at the framework of the MCR from a bi-scalar perspective, and, given the need to recognize the diversities among (and within) the spaces in the MCR, conclude with one example of how elements of the three prongs can converge into a coherent approach for sustainable planning.

Sweden is considered an environmental sustainability pioneer, targeting a 50% reduction in energy use in buildings by 2050. This ambitious goal requires the active engagement of municipal actors and the building sector. Dialogue processes have been identified as a way to mobilize such engagement, but in earlier research, there has been a lack of studies where dialogue practices are analyzed in real-time and on location and where the role of leadership has been scrutinized. Taking two cases in Malmö as a starting point, the aim of this paper is to analyze the interconnections between dialogue models and the local context and to examine how the role of process leadership affects exchanges between included actors. The results show that it is difficult to create guidelines useful in the local context and that learning was embedded in the doing and was transferred through the process leaders.

Hosting mega event is an opportunity for hosting city to attract investment in construction of new building and facilities and upgrading its infrastructure and transportation network required for the event. This research paper explores the conceptual elements adopted by Roads & Transport Authority of Dubai to deliver sustainable planning of new metro line route 2020. The main objectives considered in the planning phase of the new metro line are increase ridership, penetration to new to new development and existing urban areas and continuity of the service beyond event period, which will last for 6 months from Oct 2020 to April 2021. Different alignment options were examined against selection criteria that consisted of the following elements: transportation & future developments or transit oriented development TOD, route insertion, constructability and sustainability to ensure integration with urban areas. The primary contribution of this research is the theoretical development of a decision-support framework that identifies the tools and approaches that decision-makers could/should use to create policies and programs that transition society towards sustainability. The framework is then used to consider how Riga municipality might move the city’s transportation system towards sustainability and particular aspect – to planning decisions for passenger network in Riga City in the frame of Rail Baltica project – Riga central multimodal public transportation hub.

Urbanization rate in Central America is the second fastest worldwide and its major cities face challenges regarding urban sustainability. Urban Green Fabric (UGF) is an important material condition for the urban quality of life and, therefore, key to planning processes. We performed an analysis of the UGF of Guatemala City including the identification and classification of UGF, their spatial pattern analysis, construction of ensembles of districts (zones) and revealing citizen&rsquo, s interactions with UGF. We used remote sensing and land use mapping techniques, spatial metrics and a questionnaire survey. Main results are the UGF map of Guatemala City and six ensembles of zones based on a set of indicators. We further revealed citizens&rsquo, recognition of green spaces, their perceptions about green space amount and availability as well as their support for UGF future interventions. Finally, we discuss the implications for planning promoted by our results and suggest three actions for UGF sustainability: Creation of new green spaces, protecting existing green spaces and enhancing the mosaic with different green spaces types. UGF is an essential decision support tool for a diversity of actors.

The retail industry’s economic and environmental impact encompasses global supply chains and many thousands of facilities; it therefore has a significant impact on human health and the environment, and a responsibility for reducing this impact. This chapter begins with an overview of retail’s most common and significant environmental impacts and examines the origin of sustainable planning and operations, the business case for sustainability programs, and the maturation of retail sustainability programs.

Incorporating principles of sustainable development in long-term socio-economic planning at regional and municipal levels requires novel methodology and its supporting tools. In the chapter, the best practices of strategic planning of sustainable initiatives have been investigated based on the thorough analysis of the dynamics of sustainability indicators, major stakeholders, and organizations involved in the process. The approaches supporting sustainable planning and corresponding tools have been identified using planning activities in a large industrial and agricultural area – the Rostov region. As a result, the recommendations on strategic planning supporting sustainability at the local and regional levels are formulated. These recommendations can be useful for strategic planning in other regions with similar socio-economic characteristics.

Sustainable conservation aims to ensure the sustained conservation of landscape multi-functionality which in turn requires ensuring ecosystem service (ES) and habitat quality (HQ) sustainability with inclusive landscape-scale conservation planning. This study proposes a landscape conservation planning (LCP) framework for landscape-scale ES-HQ conservation and sustainability. Spatially explicit hotspots for five ESs and HQs are identified via InVEST and LISA software. Spatiotemporal changes in ES-HQ hotspots, in terms of stability and resilience, are delineated. The Zonation technique is applied to prioritize areas for conservation based on ES-HQ hotspot stability and resilience maps. High priority conservation areas are identified and are used as reserve area inputs for land use modeling with CLUE-S software to simulate future land use change under climate change scenarios. This study reports that varied rainfall and climate are major driving factors of ES-HQ sustainability disturbance in the study area. Furthermore, our proposed conservation Strategy 2 demonstrates that a larger extent of landscape multi-functionality can be sustained when the existing conservation area includes the total area of identified ES-HQ resilient hotspots. This study effectively identifies the stability and resiliency of ES-HQ hotspot areas affected by disturbances for high priority landscape conservation requirements to ensure ES-HQ sustainability and landscape multi-functionality in the study area.

Greenway planning is a key component of the open and green space system to ensure urban sustainability. Greenway planning should be included in the multi-criteria decision-making process because it involves more than one criterion and is a subject that requires the perspectives of different disciplines. The greenway based studies have become important in recent years however the sustainability-based studies on how to identify and function greenway routes in a city are quite limited. This study is to determine the sustainable and optimum greenway routes in Aksaray city in Turkey using the Analytic Hierarchy Process. The present study can play crucial role for providing sustainable planning, design and management of greenways and guiding decision makers.

Islands as peripheral and ultra-peripheral are typically highlighted as ecologically sensitive areas to human activities due to the tremendous biological diversity of beings and the future possibility of habitat loss. In this regard, the comprehension of the land occupation dynamics and trends in the ultra-peripheral territories is crucial to attempt long-lasting regional sustainability, as is the island region’s case. Therefore, the present article aims to analyze the trends and dynamics of the land-use changes on the European Archipelagos of the Macaronesia Region over the last three decades, using the CORINE (Coordination of Information on the Environment) data. Some of the obtained results show that about 3.4% of the Azores’ surface is characterized mainly by discontinuous urban fabric, representing 67% of the total urban fabric of the Azores over the last thirty years. Additionally, in Madeira Archipelago, the land is mainly occupied by forest and semi-natural areas, representing almost three-thirds of the territory. A similar scenario is verified in the Canary Islands, where forests and semi-natural areas represent approximately three-quarters of the territory. Once more, this study shows the relevance of the island areas’ unique character, which should be preserved and protected. Therefore, the priorities must be defined and established management strategies that are significant for the well-being of these highly valued areas. Moreover, the study showed that notable changes had occurred in the period 1990–2018 in this landscape. Hence there is a need for appropriate measures to mitigate these negative impacts on the environment.

Along with the increasing recognition of the significance of the neighborhood level for achieving urban sustainability, many Neighborhood Sustainability Assessment (NSA) tools have been developed over the past decade or so. The broad aims of these tools are to guide and promote sustainable planning and design, and to recognize/certify best practice cases. Since the late 2000’s, many articles related to diffident aspect of NSA tools have been published. Through reviewing these articles, this study seeks to identify major methodological limitations that may undermine NSA tools’ ability to promote sustainability. Nine major categories of methodological limitations were identified. These are, namely, limited and unbalanced coverage of sustainability dimensions, top-down and non-transparent approaches, limited consideration of context-specific issues, rigidity and prescriptiveness of design measures, lack of measures to ensure that basic sustainability requirements are met, lack of agreement between different assessment methodologies provided by different tools, limited consideration of interlinkages between indicators, limited consideration of boundary linkages, and the complexity of the assessment tool. In addition to discussing these limitations, this study provides recommendations that can inform tool developers of measures that could be taken to develop tools that are better capable of promoting sustainable development principles. An important issue, however, is that addressing all limitations simultaneously may be challenging due to trade-offs that may emerge between the recommended actions. It is, therefore, essential to develop methods for dealing with such trade-offs. Since the reported evidence is mainly related to a few tools, the study concludes by suggesting that more research on the methodological limitations of all the forty tools identified in this analysis is needed.

In this paper, the strategic planning of sugar-bioethanol supply chains (SCs) under deep uncertainty has been addressed by applying a two-stage scenario-based multiobjective optimisation methodology. In practice, the depth of uncertainty is very high, potential outcomes are not precisely enumerable, and probabilities of outcomes are not properly definable. To date, no appropriate framework has been suggested for dealing with deep uncertainty in supply chain management and energy-related problems. This study is the first try to fills this gap. Particularly, the sustainability of the whole infrastructure of the sugar-bioethanol SCs is analysed in such a way that the final solutions are sustainable, robust and adaptable for a broad range of plausible futures. Three objectives are considered in this problem under six uncertain parameters. A case study of South African sugarcane industry is utilised to study and examine the proposed model. The results prove the economic profitability and sustainability of the project.

UHI is an important measure for understanding the urban landscape, especially in terms of thermal agglomeration and disturbance. This research aims to discern the success of sustainability planning by examining and comparing the different characteristics of UHIs through the combination of machine learning and statistical methods. To achieve this, we analyze 4 new towns in Korea, which include two ‘old’ new towns and two ‘recent’ new towns. The key difference between our test towns lies on whether or not the sustainability policies were applied to their development plans. We visualize LST and conduct a k-mean clustering to find and quantify spatial patterning in the resulting UHI measures. We then compare the statistical relations between LST and 6 UHI driven variables across the towns. Using comparative analysis, this research reveals that sustainable development policies have a notable effect on the patterns and intensities of UHI. Urban structures, planned under development policies, including green and blue space ratios, road networks, and housing distributions, were found to affect UHI significantly. We quantifiably confirm that the sustainability policies implemented in planning the ‘recent’ new towns allow the towns to experience less aggravated UHIs than the ‘old’ new towns. However, we also claim a need to develop appropriate, long-term UHI management regulations for the ‘recent’ new towns. This paper provides a solid basis for improving Korean new town planning and managing the environmental issues in urban systems for planners, designers, and decision-makers to establish the sustainable built environment.

The adoption of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the UN General Assembly in September 2015, particularly SDG 11, reiterated the importance of sustainable planning in cities. This study evaluates the contribution of four pre-existing major local planning initiatives towards increasing the capacity of Brazilian cities to deliver sustainable development. A conceptual framework was designed to evaluate four dimensions of sustainable development: social, environmental, economic and political. This evaluation draws lessons to develop an action framework to facilitate the implementation of SDG 11 at the local city level. The evaluation of planning initiatives in 15 Brazilian municipalities was based on a mixed methods and triangulation approach and seems to be helpful for enhancing and facilitating implementation of SDG 11 in Brazilian municipalities. In contrast, due to lack of systematic data from Brazilian municipalities it will be necessary to foster the development of adequate indicators to evaluate the effectiveness of SDG 11. Despite this, SDG 11 can become a referential goal to enhance sustainability in some cities and create opportunity to influence the Brazilian municipalities about the importance of sustainable planning. Implementation and integration of sustainable development within a management framework is the main problem of urban regeneration projects. Therefore, this paper aims to develop a sustainable heritage-led urban regeneration planning framework, which will act as an urban regeneration project life cycle model and aid sustainable planning and decision-making processes for project managers. First, a literature review is used to conceptualise the first version of the sustainable planning framework. Then, it is validated by conducting interviews with professionals in Northern Cyprus. Sustainable heritage-led urban regeneration planning problems exist in the case study region. Therefore, the data collected for this research is significant to the research problem. Results showed that there is a lack of knowledge towards heritage-led urban regeneration among the local community and it is the main source of sustainable planning problems. Therefore, a questionnaire survey is conducted to validate this problem. The results validated that there is a sustainability perception difference between the local community and professionals, and the knowledge level of the local community was not satisfactory. Finally, a knowledge management system is introduced in the final version of the framework in order to empower stakeholders, and the “eye of sustainable planning” is introduced. Perception differences between the local community and professionals and the lack of knowledge of the local community towards heritage-led urban regeneration is introduced by this research. This study is limited to heritage-led regeneration projects and future studies may extend the scope of this study to different countries.

[Abstract]: The aim of this article is to analyse the social and political capacity of cities affected by cultural tourism. An investigation is carried out into the state of the situation in saturated destinations, the problems this poses to tourist sustainability and the positions of the various different interest groups. In Europe, many cultural cities-cum-tourist hotspots have reached such high levels of socio-political saturation that the resident population’s capacity for carrying tourism has become overstretched. This has led to a state of irritation among the local population. Social movements now include this on their agenda but the various different interest groups (residents, political groups, entrepreneurs, management bodies) all react differently. We present data relating to the case of Barcelona, with analyses of residents’ and tourists’ opinions, the actions of social mobilization carried out by pressure groups, media repercussion and the reactions of the business sector and political groups. We examine data collected from surveys and opinions carried in the media. The sustainability and management of interests indicate changes in both the number and the type of tourists, the occupation of public spaces, the distribution of profit among entrepreneurs, residents and the political and economic model of society in the future.

In Turkey, urban regeneration projects are being used as an important land policy instrument to achievesustainable development. However, the failure to meet residents’ expectations and to establish a soundlegal framework, together with a and failure to establish an effective dialogue with the stakeholders, allhave implications for the sustainability and eventual success of these policies. Firstly, this study is anexamination of urban land development policies in Turkey, focusing on problems of urbanization andland management. Subsequently, urban regeneration projects in Konya, Turkey, were studied from anurban land development perspective and a proposal made for spatial objectives in an area planned forurban regeneration. The purpose of this study is to present spatial solutions the physical and socialstructural problems experienced in the old city center of the province of Konya in Turkey with urbanregeneration applications, which are implementation methods for sustainable estate policies. For thispurpose, firstly the methods that are used in Turkey for implementation of urban estate policies wereexamined in the light of the literature. Then, the urbanization-related problems in the selected site ofurban regeneration were presented, and spatial solution recommendations were made in relation torenewal of the physical structure and increasing the quality of life. This study is important in terms ofpresenting and discussing the process of creating spatial-functional goals for producing sustainableestate policies and urban regeneration applications related to the urban sprawl, property issues andsocial structure problems that occur in city centers that are getting old., Türkiye'de kentsel dönüşüm uygulamaları, sürdürülebilir gelişmenin elde edilmesinde önemli bir arazikullanım politikaları aracı olarak kullanılmaktadır. Ancak uygulamalarda yaşayanların beklentilerinecevap verilememesi, yasal dayanağın oluşturulamaması, katılımcı diğer gruplarla diyaloglarkurulamaması gibi sorunlar uygulamaların sürdürülebilirliğini ve başarısını etkilemektedir. Bu çalışmada,öncelikle Türkiye'de kentsel arsa üretimi politikaları kentleşme sorunları ve arazi yönetimi kapsamındadeğerlendirilmiştir. Ardından kentsel arsa üretiminde uygulama yöntemlerinden olan kentsel dönüşümuygulamaları Türkiye/Konya örneğinde ele alınmış ve planlanan bir kentsel dönüşüm alanına yönelikmekânsal hedefler oluşturulmuştur. Bu çalışmada amaç, Türkiye’nin Konya ili eski kent merkezindeyaşanan fiziki ve sosyal yapı sorunlarına sürdürülebilir kentsel arsa politikaları uygulama yöntemlerindenolan kentsel dönüşüm uygulamaları ile mekânsal çözümler sunmaktır. Bu amaç kapsamında öncelikleTürkiye’deki kentsel arsa politikalarının uygulanmasında kullanılan yöntemler literatür kapsamındaincelenmiştir. Ardından seçilen kentsel dönüşüm sahasında kentleşme sorunları ortaya konularak fiziksel yapının yenilenmesi ve yaşam kalitesinin artırılmasına ilişkin mekânsal çözüm önerilerigeliştirilmiştir. Bu çalışma, eskiyen kent merkezlerinde oluşan çarpık kentleşme, mülkiyet sorunları vesosyal yapı sorunlarına ilişkin kentsel dönüşüm uygulamaları ile sürdürülebilir arsa politikaları üretilmesiiçin mekânsal-işlevsel hedeflerin oluşturulması süreci ve sürecin sorunlarının tartışılması açısındanönem taşımaktadır.

Purpose – Rankings of the world's cities by a liveability factor have become increasingly significant in the media, among governments and city councils in the promotion of cities, as well as academics interested in understanding the impact of quantifying liveability on urban planning and the relationship of liveability indices and tourism. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach – While examining characteristics of liveable cities according to some of the widely reported liveability indices, such as those produced by Mercer, Monocle magazine and the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU), the authors provide a snapshot of Perth as a liveable city and consider liveability in relation to urban tourism, sustainability and environment. Perth's liveability ranking is discussed in terms of environmental sustainability, noting that for Perth to retain its position as one of the world's most liveable cities, consideration must be given to sustainable planning and environmental practices at policy, organisational and individual levels, placing the long-term liveability of the environment and Perth's flora and fauna at the forefront of urban, and tourism, planning. Findings – The accessibility of nature in Perth and its surrounds, its outdoor recreational opportunities and warm climate are factors that make it unique. Developing and promoting nature-based tourism would further enhance the accessibility of nature for visitors and residents. While Perth's EIU top ten ranking is justified, its major attributes remain unrecognised by the widely used EIU liveable city assessment framework. Research limitations/implications – Moreover, the notion of a liveable city is open to contention due to the subjective nature of various assessment criteria. Liveability indices should include quantifiable environmental factors such as green space, remnant vegetation, biodiversity, air quality and unpolluted water. Originality/value – This paper thus contributes to the discourse on what constitutes a liveable city, the authors emphasise that liveability is significantly related to the presence of green space and natural areas as well as the opportunity to see and interact with wildlife. Perth has such opportunities for it residents and visitors but as yet the aforementioned natural characteristics are not implicit in international measures of liveability.

As urban systems continue to grow worldwide, urban peripheries increase in number and typologies, which makes their planning a challenge for sustainable development. The aim of this article is to explore approaches and challenges related to the application of sustainable planning to urban peripheries. We reviewed the content of 102 papers related to sustainable planning in urban peripheries by applying a framework built on two main research questions that address: i) the type of peripheries and sustainable planning approaches considered; ii) the challenges and recommendations reported. The results show that urban peripheries are difficult to synthesize in operative classifications, and are not central in the discourse on sustainable planning approaches. The studies described are mainly context-specific and solution-oriented, aimed at responding to local socio-economic and ecological issues, and the analysis reveals uncertainties about their transferability to other geographical contexts. Few common trends can be highlighted, but many authors acknowledge the cross-cutting risks and trade-offs related to the complexity and dynamism of urban peripheries, which may eventually lead planning to unsustainable or unlivable outcomes. Integration among different scales and sectors emerges as a requirement for effective sustainable planning. We conclude with a remark on the underexploited opportunities offered by urban peripheries, especially with regard to ecological planning approaches.

To encourage sustainable planning processes and behaviours in the engineering profession and the wider public there is an urgent need for policy-makers, urban planners and engineers to consider psychological factors. When urban plans, policies and projects neglect public values and beliefs, projects may be less likely to fulfil the intended aims. This paper investigates the role of psychological factors of belief, risk perception, trust and attitude in the adoption of urban plans and sustainability policies by explaining why these result in inconsistencies in behaviour. Examples are provided from the literature and recent case studies to support this and demonstrate how these factors explain the reluctance of the public to engage in sustainable behaviours. Recommendations are provided for urban planners, central and local government and engineers to achieve and maintain sustainable behaviours by the public and professionals by considering behavioural theories.

Empirical evidence regarding Local Agenda 21 (LA21) seems to indicate that higher LA21 dissemination is linked to networking. However, it is not entirely clear which features explain the favourable attitude of local authorities towards networks. This research takes a step forward towards filling this gap by studying the variables that are able to create favourable attitude towards participative sustainable planning tools by tourism-destination local authorities in a networking context. We focus on tourism destinations as singularly interesting areas for studying sustainability issues. Our research context is a region in Spain, the Balearic Islands, which was chosen due to its great dependence on tourism and its apparent involvement with LA21 processes. Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is one of the pioneering cities in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region that have recently prepared urban sustainability agendas for their cities. Nonetheless, the recently developed urban neighborhoods in Abu Dhabi mostly rely on Land Use planning and their urban forms are still missing essential sustainability qualities. The Form-Based Code (FBC), a sustainable planning tool that helps realize sustainable urban forms, is suggested in this research as an alternative for the conventional Land Use planning currently applied for new urban neighborhoods in Abu Dhabi. The research adopted a method for &lsquo, localizing&rsquo, the global tenets and initiation processes of FBCs that outfit the local urban conditions. The investigation of the locally applied form-related regulations and guidelines revealed that they could be transformed into a localized FBC, but still lack some essential components of the FBC&rsquo, s principles while the community involvement in initiating them was fairly limited. The research examined the applicability of this localized FBC model through interviewing the concerned stakeholders to identify the challenges that might face the adoption of it. The research concluded with recommending a set of actions for implementing the model in Abu Dhabi and other cities sharing similar urban circumstances.
