Purpose: This study aims to the perceptions of the administration of Greek universities on sustainable development and the role of the administration in the implementation of corresponding practices. Specifically, it examines management's perception and contribution to sustainable development and assesses the sustainability initiatives taking place in universities and the factors that influence their implementation. The obstacles and motivations in the implementation of these actions are also investigated. Design/methodology/approach: For the empirical analysis, a survey was conducted during the period March–June 2022, addressing questionnaires to 12 rectors or vice rectors dealing with the sustainability of the respective 12 Greek universities. Secondary data about their sustainability practices were also collected from the institutions' official Web pages. Findings: The results show that management's perception of sustainable development mainly concerns the conservation of resources for future generations and the balancing of the economy. Moreover, the findings indicate that universities play a significant role in achieving sustainability by contributing to the educational process, conducting research and serving as a model of sustainability for both the educational community and society as a whole. Financial and institutional barriers are characterized as the most important obstacles for adopting sustainability practices. The most popular motives to promote sustainability issues are financial support of universities, in addition to the governmental support of the leadership and, in particular, of the rectorate authorities. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is the first conducted among the Greek universities that focuses on administration's viewpoint and contributes to the international dialogue on the implementation of sustainability by higher education institutions. The results provide preliminary evidence of top management responses to endorse sustainability activities at the higher education institutes in the broader area of Eastern Europe. - Abstract
Contract farming (CF) as a sustainable practice has expanded rapidly, bringing numerous benefits to both the agribusiness industry and farmers, as well as the broader economy; CF is also considered a vehicle to tackle the challenges in sustainable development due to the serious effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, little attention has been paid to CF schemes in Greece. To address this evidence gap, the current study aimed to outline the socioeconomic profile of Greek farmers and how it is related to their perspective on CF in the post-COVID era. Primary data were collected in the agricultural area of central Greece, Thessaly, with a structured questionnaire containing three sections: demographics, awareness of the CF concept, and farmers' perceptions toward CF. The results indicate that 60.7% of the respondents are unaware of CF. Demographic and economic variables such as gender, years of experience, and income impact Greek farmers' attitude toward CF. In addition, factor analysis results reveal that economic benefits and social, technological, and environmental challenges and risks are associated with CF. We suggest that researchers and policymakers interested in the development of CF in Greece should consider the heterogeneity of the agricultural workforce for the development and successful implementation of policies related to CF. Educational programs towards increasing farmers' awareness and sufficient understanding of the practical issues of CF are also required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the reasons for visiting the urban park Antonis Tritsis in Athens, Greece, focusing on visitors' motives and perceived characteristics of the park. When urban parks are located in areas that are particularly densely populated are characterized as green lungs and are easily accessible to the residents of the municipality. Therefore, the aim of the study is to analyze both the motives and perceived characteristics that visitors attribute in the case of the biggest urban park in Athens, Greece. Design/methodology/approach: The survey was conducted from August 2018 to March 2019 and the responses of 377 visitors were collected. Antonis Tritsis Park is the largest metropolitan park in the Attica, Greece. A principal component factor analysis was used and two-factor models were developed to determine the reasons for visiting the Tritsis Park. Findings: The application of factor analysis revealed the presence of three components in case of the motives for the visit and six components concerning the perceived characteristics of the park. Results suggest that visitors' motives are related to environmental and social benefits. The park contributes to increased real estate value. Educational and cultural activities are also found as important benefits, whereas lack of safety and limited infrastructure are considered important barriers to revisit the park. Research limitations/implications: Recognizing the motivations of visitors, policymakers will be able to configure the park infrastructure according to the stated preferences. Practical implications: Recognizing the motivations of visitors and the perceived characteristics of the park, policymakers will be able to configure the park infrastructure according to the stated preferences. If the services provided by the Tritsis Park are based on the preferences of its visitors, their satisfaction can be maximized and consequently improve the quality of life and contribute to sustainable development. Originality/value: The innovation of the study is to analyze not only the perceived positive characteristics of the park but also barriers that affect visitors' revisit intention toward the urban park of Antonis Tritsis. This is important in the case of metropolitan areas because the researchers understand what benefits are provided to them and how public administration should manage barriers to visiting urban parks so as to promote effective sustainability. The recycling rates for the EU Member States deviate significantly from the targets set by Directive (2018)/851 for attaining the target of 55% by 2025 (European union, 2018). The aim of the study is to investigate the short- and long-term relationship between macroeconomic variables and the recycling rates performance at both national and regional level. Within this context, four sets of variables are examined, namely sociodemographic, economic and institutional factors. For the purpose of the analysis, the available data acquired from 28 EU countries during the period between 2000 and 2020, as well as from 38 EU regions during 2000–2018 and a panel data approach using OLS, Fixed Effects, Random Effects, FMOLS, and ECM techniques is implemented. Findings robustly indicate that factors such as economic performance, institutional quality, and higher educational attainment significantly contribute to the EU circular economy. Results imply that changes in agricultural intensification and population density significantly affect recycling levels. A particularly significant finding that contributes to the existing literature is the higher speed of adjustment, as indicated by the lagged ECT, at the NUTS-1 level compared to the NUTS-2 level. Thus, recycling policy outcomes, implemented policies, and interventions adjust more rapidly towards their equilibrium state, resulting in immediate impacts and faster changes at NUTS-1 level. On the contrary, it takes more time for these policy outcomes to materialize at the regional scale. Policymakers should prioritize reducing income disparities, improving transparency, investing in education, and promoting sustainable agriculture and waste management infrastructure to support the circular economy. The aim of this paper is to analyse the factors affecting consumers' preferences towards the ownership of household appliances. The study is based on 186 survey responses from Cypriot households, and they are analysed econometrically using regression techniques. The analysis is based on a theoretical framework, which takes into account both demographic and economic factors behind households' preference to energy-efficient appliances. The results show that consumers that buy energy-efficient appliances are highly educated and women. Household income is not a statistically significant variable of the probability to choose an appliance based on its energy efficiency characteristics. On the contrary, income and number of persons per household affect the number of appliances that consumers own. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
