Purpose: This paper aims to deal with the skills for sustainable development in engineering courses. The main objective is to identify which competences should be developed in these courses to contribute to the resolution of conflicts related to sustainability, as well as the means used by universities for their development. Design/methodology/approach: The research is divided into two strands--a theoretical and an empirical one. Concerning the theoretical part, the webibliomining method was adopted, to select the articles that were relevant to the theme, and 22 works were selected. Regarding the empirical study, structured questionnaires were applied to 30 specialists in the field, aiming at validating the competencies found in the literature. Findings: In the literature, eight main competencies required to the engineering professional, related to sustainability, were found. The empirical study showed that some competences are considered more relevant than others by the interviewees. Practical implications: The competencies verified in the present study and the relative relevance between them found in the empirical study can contribute to the engineering courses that wish to develop the sustainable behavior of the engineers in their professional or daily life. Originality/value: The originality of the work consists in presenting to engineering students and teachers as well as professionals of the market and the government the competencies that can contribute to the formation of an engineer capable of bringing adequate solutions to the conflicts of sustainability in the twenty-first century. This paper also presents learning teaching methodologies indicated for this purpose. No other works were found with these results.

The management of transport logistics in industries is a good opportunity to implement sustainable organizational management practices. All over the world, the great concentration of cargo transport by land modal raises the cost of sustainable management of transport logistics, favoring the development of models about the impact of Information Technology (IT) use. This article aims to analyze the perception of transport specialists regarding the degree of contribution of information technologies in the more sustainable management of transport logistics in industries from a sampling of transport logistics in a beverage industry operating in the American continent. The research methodology involved a case study with a focus group, addressing the relationship between information technology and sustainability. Within the same transport operation, benchmarking the effects of sustainable performance with the use of IT capability are also analysed. The results of the study indicate that, for the Southern region of the American Continent, existing technologies when used in the transport operation have a greater degree of contribution to sustainable management. Rising energy costs and the current concern about sustainability issues directly impact the competitiveness and survival of organizations, promoting the search for continuous improvement in industrial production processes. The present study, by identifying the absence in the literature of models based on Value Stream Mapping and integrated with Industry 4.0 technologies that promote better energy efficiency practices in industrial processes, proposes a new Lean Management model called Real-time Energy Flow Mapping. This innovative model, provide capabilities to a visual, digital and sustainable management system of all energy behavior in machines and equipment using fully parameterizable metrics and rules. Also, estimulating stakeholders with the ability to predict and monitor energy costs, as well as identify possible problems due to changes in the behavior of energy consumption in machines, thus helping managers to make decisions faster and more dynamically. As a result, the literature search turned up 17 Value Stream Mapping based models with a focus on energy efficiency, along with 31 metrics grouped on energy, environmental and production processes. After discussions by the Focus Groups, 16 resulting metrics were submitted to expert panel, in which the least relevant were discarded and the 13 most relevant classified using Fuzzy Delphi. An analysis to verify the interrelationships between the metrics is performed using the Fuzzy DEMATEL, being finally applied in the proposed model. A case study of the model was carried out, submitting it operationally at the LabFaber 4.0, empirically validating the study. The Real Time Energy Flow Map fills the gap in the literature on Value Stream Mapping models to improve energy efficiency, monitoring energy consumption through dynamic mapping of the energy flow of production processes, identifying the area with increased potential for energy savings through changes in operating behavior that reduce overall energy consumption and environmental impacts. • Lean model integrated with energy, environmental and production process metrics. • Value Stream Mapping model for best practices in energy efficiency. • Real-time energy consumption modeling of industrial production processes. • Lean model in a real-world case study to analyse the benefits of energy efficiency. • Analysis of the most relevant energy, environmental and production process metrics.
