The 10-item Perceived Efficacy in Patient-Physician Interactions (PEPPI-10) questionnaire was used as an indirect measure of the patients' perception of the strength of their therapeutic connection with their physician. The English version of the PEPPI-10 could serve as a valuable research tool for analyzing the relationship between patient and physician. The incidence of breast cancer is amongst the highest in Japan, and Patient Reported Outcome is often used as an outcome measure for breast cancer. It is particularly important to establish a strong patient-physician interaction for patients with breast cancer, since these patients require long-term treatment. We designed the present study to assess the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the PEPPI-10 in female Japanese breast cancer outpatients. A cross-sectional study was performed at the Saitama Cancer Center, Japan. From August 2014 to August 2015, the Japanese versions of the PEPPI-10 that measure patient-perceived self-efficacy and the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ) that measure illness perception were used for 92 breast cancer patients who received outpatient chemotherapy (mean age: 52.9 years, Cancer Stage I or Stage II : 82.6%, receiving adjuvant chemotherapy: 69.6%). We found that the Japanese version of the PEPPI-10 scale had a high coefficient of internal consistency (Cronbach's α coefficient, 0.83) for reliability, and concurrent validity analysis indicated that the utility of PEPPI-10 was moderately correlated with that of the BIPQ. In conclusion, the Japanese version of the PEPPI-10 is a useful tool that can empower breast cancer outpatients during the course of their treatment.

Objective: To assess the reliability of the Medication Adherence Report Scale (MARS-5) for assessing adherence in clinical practice and research., Methods: Prospective cohort study following electronically measured inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) adherence for 1 year in 2-13-year-old children with persistent asthma. The relationship between electronically measured adherence and MARS-5 scores (ranging from 5 to 25) was assessed by Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. A ROC (receiver operating characteristic) curve was performed testing MARS-5 against electronically measured adherence. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative likelihood ratios of the closest MARS-5 cut-off values to the top left-hand corner of the ROC curve were calculated., Results: High MARS scores were obtained (median 24, interquartile range 22-24). Despite a statistically significant correlation between MARS-5 and electronically assessed adherence (Spearman's rho = 0.47; p < 0.0001), there was considerable variation of adherence rates at every MARS-5 score. The area under the ROC curve was 0.7188. A MARS-5 score ≥23 had the best predictive ability for electronically assessed adherence, but positive and negative likelihood ratios were too small to be useful (1.65 and 0.27, respectively)., Conclusions: Self-report using MARS-5 is too inaccurate to be a useful measure of adherence in children with asthma, both in clinical practice and in research.

The intercorrelations among the 15 scales of the 30-item Core version of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire suggest that one may combine (1) the physical functioning and role functioning scales, (2) the emotional functioning and cognitive functioning scales, and (3) the nine symptom scales. Together with the global health/quality of life scale and the social functioning scale, five measures remain. Principal component analysis of those five measures, using data from Japanese and Dutch breast and lung cancer patients, yielded two dimensions: (1) generalized health related quality of life and (2) health-independent psychological well-being. The correlations of these dimensions with the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire and Karnofsky performance substantiated this interpretation.

Purpose: The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Inhibitor 18 (FACT-EGFRI-18) is a patient-reported outcomes questionnaire developed to assess the effect of EGFRI on patients. The FACT-EGFR-18 was translated into Dutch and evaluated in order to document that the translation adequately captures the concepts of the original English-language version of the questionnaire and is readily understood by subjects in the target population., Method: Translation of the FACT-EGFRI-18 from English to Dutch was accomplished by employing the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy (FACIT) multilingual translation methodology. Ten native-speaking residents of the target country who reported EGFRI associated dermatological adverse events (dAEs) were asked to review the translation of the harmonized FACT-EGFRI-18., Results: Participants generally found the Dutch FACT-EGFRI-18 easy to understand and complete. In addition, the translation retained the original meaning of the FACT-EGFRI-18 items and instructions. Based on the results of the cognitive debriefing interviews, no changes to improve clarity and comprehension of translations were identified., Conclusions: The Dutch FACT-EGFRI-18 demonstrates content validity and linguistic validity, and was found conceptually equivalent to its English source, thus confirming linguistic validation. The results suggest that the Dutch FACT-EGFRI-18 can be applied to measure dAE related health related quality of life in Dutch-speaking patients undergoing EGFRI therapy. This commentary describes the methodological shortcomings and the misleading presentation of the 'think-aloud' Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ) paper by van Oort, Schröder, & French (2011). We highlight that this paper uses a confusing Dutch translation of the scale, fabricates incorrect instructions, and employs a sample in which the majority of patients do not have established illness diagnoses. We believe these problematic methodological issues are the likely cause of the results presented in the paper. We argue that the conclusions of the paper are inaccurate, unsupported, and overstated given the limitations of the study. Furthermore, the think-aloud method cannot be a substitute for the established psychometric methods for assessing reliability and validity., (©2011 The British Psychological Society.)

Objective: Quality of life studies in Indonesia are still uncommon. This research was aimed to validate the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-C30 in Indonesian version. The standard procedure of forward-backward translation was adhered to in the translation procedures. The validity procedure included reliability, convergent and discriminant validity, known-groups validity, factor analysis and external convergent validity., Methods: Data were collected from cancer patients in the Oncology Department of Sardjito Hospital, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, who were treated with cisplatin at the dosage ≥50 mg/m(2) as monotherapy or in combinations. The Short Form-36 was used to assess the external convergent validity of our translated questionnaire., Results: One hundred and twenty-eight patients were recruited from March 2009 to November 2009. The internal consistency with values of >0.70 was observed in the Indonesian version of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-C30 scales. All items in the questionnaire met the criteria of convergent and discriminant validity, except for items 5. Both of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-C30 and the Short Form-36 showed that different diagnoses were associated with a similar impact on quality of life. Factor analysis showed that only the role function and social function loaded onto the second factor together. Correlations between the Indonesian versions of both questionnaires were moderate: between 0.18 and 0.48 for the physical, emotional, social, fatigue and pain domains., Conclusions: The Indonesian version of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-C30 can be used as a questionnaire to assess quality of life in Indonesian cancer patients with high-emetogenic treatments.

Background: Even though quality of life (QoL) has become a key component of medical care, there is no instrument available that specifically measures QoL after pulmonary embolism (PE). Recently, the Pulmonary Embolism Quality of Life (PEmb-QoL) Questionnaire has been developed to address this gap., Objective: To evaluate the validity of the PEmb-QoL questionnaire., Methods: We distributed the PEmb-QoL questionnaire and the Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaire twice among consecutive subjects with a history of objectively confirmed acute PE. Internal consistency reliability, test-retest reliability, convergent validity and criterion validity, and correlations between the PEmb-QoL and clinical patient characteristics were assessed using standard-scale construction techniques., Results: Ninety participants completed the questionnaires twice. Internal consistency was adequate (Cronbach's alpha 0.62-0.94), as well as test-retest reliability (intra-class correlation coefficients: 0.78-0.94). Furthermore, correlation between the PEmb-QoL questionnaire and the SF-36 questionnaire supported convergent validity. Age, obesity, cardiopulmonary comorbidity, centrally located PE and a family history of venous thromboembolism were shown to be independent determinants of disease-specific QoL., Conclusion: The PEmb-QoL questionnaire is a reliable instrument to specifically assess QoL following PE, which is helpful in the identification of patients with decreased QoL following acute PE.

Objective: To examine psychosocial concomitants, illness perceptions, and treatment perceptions in patients with adductor spasmodic dysphonia., Design: Prospective controlled cohort study., Setting: A tertiary care facility., Participants: Forty-nine out-patients (38 women, 11 men; average age of 52 years) with adductor spasmodic dysphonia completed a battery of reliable and validated psychometric assessment instruments. Control patients' data were derived from scores in questionnaires by samples in the formal Manuals of the questionnaires used., Main Outcome Measures: Psychosocial functioning, illness perceptions, and treatment perceptions., Results: Scores on psychosocial measures were elevated in male patients especially, indicating levels of psychological morbidity significantly above those seen in the general population. Assessments of illness perceptions and treatment perceptions indicated that patients perceive that they have a very low degree of control over the disorder, and experience a high emotional impact from it. Voice Handicap Index scores illustrated substantial degrees of perceived handicap., Conclusions: Adductor spasmodic dysphonia is associated with significant negative psychosocial concomitants, coupled with low perceived control over the condition. Future research should elucidate the implications of illness perceptions and treatment perceptions for the biopsychosocial care of persons with adductor spasmodic dysphonia in order to improve self-management and enhance quality of life.

Background: Athletes have to cope adequately with the consequences of their injury in order to return into sports as soon as possible. Besides the physical characteristics of the injury, illness perceptions and emotional responses impact the behavioural responses to the injury., Purpose: To apply Leventhal's Common Sense Model as a theoretical framework in the field of sports medicine, pertaining to injured athletes., Methods: In a sample of 95 injured athletes participating in different sports, sociodemographic, injury and sport-related characteristics, the Illness Perception Questionnaire-Revised-Sports (IPQ-R-S) and the Profile Of Mood States were assessed., Results: Injured athletes' most experienced symptoms were pain (82%) and loss of strength (50%), associated with a high controllability; they see their injury as not chronic, with minor consequences for daily life and minor emotional consequences. Athletes with an injury of longer duration have minor psychological attributions, 28% suffer from fatigue, which is strongly related to a negative mood state., Conclusions: Illness perceptions and mood states are related to injury characteristics. Clinicians ought to incorporate patients' views about their injuries into their treatment in order to increase the concordance between patient's and clinician's perceptions, thereby increasing chances of a quick and uneventful recovery.

This paper evaluates the scale structure of the EORTC QLQ-STO22 gastric cancer module using Japanese validation data. We additionally tested two single items regarding dumping syndrome. Of 246 patients who participated in phase II clinical trials of chemotherapy to treat advanced gastric cancer, we analyzed 206 who completed the pretreatment questionnaire. The factor analysis supported the scale structure hypothesized for the initial development phase conducted by the EORTC Quality of Life Group, not the alternations made in the final psychometric testing phase. The elicited scales exhibited high internal consistency and high clinical validity. Our data suggest that there is no need to examine the dumping syndrome items. This study revealed a slightly different scale structure of the QLQ-STO22 from that obtained in the European study. Extensive discussions with the EORTC Group are needed from both cross-cultural and clinical perspectives in order to establish a consensus on the various language versions of the QLQ-STO22., ((c) 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Research into the equivalence of Western and Japanese conceptualizations of health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) is scarce. We used the Western (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer, EORTC-QLQ-C30) and the Japanese (HRQoL-20) questionnaire in order to analyze the conceptual similarity of HR-QOL factors, and the associations between specific symptom items with overall HR-QOL in Japanese (n=265) and Dutch (n=174) patients with various types of cancer. Both populations completed both instruments. In both patient groups, the overall health scale of the EORTC-QLQ-C30 correlated highly (r=0.59; p<0.001) with the HRQOL-20 composite average score, indicating substantial conceptual comparability. Relationships between all EORTC-QLQ-C30 symptom items with HR-QOL were examined by ranking their correlations with the two overall measures of HR-QOL. Comparable patterns in the Japanese and Dutch samples were observed. The results suggest a considerable conceptual equivalence of HR-QOL in Japanese and Dutch cancer patients, and indicate a satisfactory structural and cross-cultural equivalence for the EORTC-QLQ-C30 with regard to items measuring functioning and specific symptoms. Longitudinal studies are needed to examine the impact of specific symptoms on general quality of life.

Chronic non-specific lung disease (CNSLD), a chronic disease with considerable prevalence and mortality rates, is not only a medical problem, it also has significant psychological and social consequences for the patients concerned. Quality of life research on CNSLD has been rather underdeveloped for quite a long period of time, but has recently become an important topic in research as well as in patient care. In order to get insight into the state of the art of empirical research on quality of life (QOL) in CNSLD, a review of the literature between 1980-1994 on this topic is presented. Special attention is paid to definitions and operationalizations of the QOL concept as well as on questionnaires used to assess QOL and the aims of QOL research. Analysis reveals that QOL is seldom defined clearly and is operationalized in a variety of ways. Most studies have a descriptive nature or pertain to clinical trials. The negative impact of CNSLD on QOL is well-documented and shows the importance of incorporating assessment of QOL in research as well as in patient care. Future research is called for, which should be theory-driven, taking into account recent developments concerning disease-specific measures of QOL.

In this short report, the construction of a disease-specific quality-of-life questionnaire for patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is described. Some psychometric aspects are also discussed. We listed 221 items relating to several domains of quality-of-life, and asked 204 patients to indicate, on a seven-point Likert-scale, how much of a problem each item had been during the last year. After item selection, a quality-of-life scale was constructed, consisting of 55 items divided into 7 subscales. The reliability estimates vary from 0.68 to 0.89, and can be considered as quite satisfactory. Results concerning construct validity are promising; there is a strong relationship between the Quality-of-life subscales and several indicators of illness severity. Further research is called for to validate the questionnaire.
