This article discusses the use of phage therapy as an alternative or adjunct to antibiotics in the treatment of bacterial infections in heart and lung transplant patients. The authors describe five cases in which phage therapy was successfully used to treat multidrug-resistant infections in transplant patients. The therapy was personalized based on the specific bacteria involved, and in all cases, the pathogen was completely eradicated after phage therapy. The authors conclude that personalized phage therapy can be recommended for critical conditions in transplantation medicine when conventional antibacterial therapy is inadequate.
