All‐solid‐state batteries (ASSBs) are expected to be next‐generation energy storage systems due to their high energy density and safety. However, their practical use has been limited by a poor rate capability caused by the Li dendrite growth. Under the operation with high current density, the Li migration rate at the interface between anode and solid electrolyte (SE) is faster than the Li replenishing rate by atom diffusion inside of Li, resulting in void formation at the interface between the anode and SE. These voids induce the increase in the localized current density, leading to the growth of Li dendrites. In this study, an ASSBs system is demonstrated with high rate capability by employing lithiated ZnO nanorods into Li. Lithiated ZnO nanorods, which are capable of Li‐ion conduction, providing the passage for Li transportation from the Li bulk to the interface between the Li and SE, resulting in an improvement in the replenishing rate. The lithiated ZnO nanorods in Li enable interfacial integrity by suppressing the void formation at the Li/SE interface even under the high current density. ASSBs employing Li with lithiated ZnO nanorods exhibit stable cyclability without short circuit at 0.3 C during 300 cycles and excellent rate capability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Li dendrite growth and corresponding parasitic reactions are inherent vulnerability of lithium metal anodes, limiting practical adoption. Here, we report a stable artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer consisting of Li 2 Se and LiCl with high Li ion conducting and insulating properties fabricated through a facile and low-cost approach. The designed artificial SEI layer on Li blocks direct contact with the electrolyte and enables dendrite-free Li plating through the artificial SEI layer. With these benefits, Li anodes modified with an artificial SEI show dendrite-free Li plating behaviors with a lower porosity of 30% compared to that of bare Li (43%) at a high current density of 5.0 mA cm−2 and a high capacity of 40 mAh cm−2. In addition, modified anodes exhibit stable cyclability with lower overpotentials in Li symmetric cells operated at 1.0 mA cm−2 with 1.0 mAh cm−2 for 400 cycles. The significant improvement in cycling performance over hundreds of cycles is achieved using LiCoO 2 and LiFePO 4 cathodes. Furthermore, higher average Coulombic efficiency of 96.4% is realized in a full cell consisting of a high-capacity Ni 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (3.5 mAh cm−2) and thin (50 μm) modified Li anodes compared to that of bare Li anodes (94.3%). • Kneading process increases adsorption amounts of Na-CMC on graphite surface. • High adsorption amounts of Na-CMC improve dispersibility of the slurry. • Enhanced dispersibility improves Li-ion kinetics with uniform pore distribution. • Li-CMC kneading process enhances Li-ion kinetics with superior SEI layer. • Li-CMC kneading process presents outstanding electrochemical performances. The low Li-ion kinetics caused by the high ionic and charge transfer resistance in the dense and thick electrode deteriorates electrochemical properties in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high energy density. Here, we report a kneading process of the carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) binder to improve Li-ion kinetics in the anode. The kneading process of Na-CMC increases the adsorption amount of Na-CMC on the graphite surface, which improves the dispersibility of the anode slurry. Enhanced dispersibility enables uniform pore distribution in the anode, which improves Li-ion kinetics. Moreover, replacing the Na-CMC with Li-CMC in the kneading process further improves Li-ion kinetics in the anode by reducing the charge transfer activation energy due to the formation of high Li-ion conducting LiF-rich solid-electrolyte interphase layer.
